1. In two experiments samples of blood and organs were taken from newborn and young lambs born to five groups of ewes that received different dietary iodine (I) levels. Dietary I contents (mg/kg dry matter [DM]) in pregnancy and lactation, respectively, were: Experiment 1--0.36 and 0.26 for group C, 2.01 and 1.94 for group D; Experiment 2--0.13 and 0.12 for group A, 0.22 and 0.20 for group B, 10.77 and 8.88 for group E. 2. I intake of ewes had no effect on birthweight, body weight gain, or mortality between birth and wk 2 of life. No difference between the groups was recorded in the weights of brain, heart, lungs, and liver of lambs killed at birth. However, the weight of both the thyroid lobes in lambs from group E was lower than that of the other groups. The I content of the thyroid lobes of lambs from group A was 30-40% lower than that of the other groups. 3. The plasma inorganic iodine (PII) of lambs from birth to d42 of life was affected by ewe I intake, except for groups A and B, during the first 16 h of life. The PII of lambs increased with the I intake via milk in each group. The ratio of PII of lambs at birth/PII of ewes at d7 prepartum was 3.77, 2.96, 1.68, 1.39 and 8.62, respectively, for groups A, B, C, D and E. 4. The high I intake by group E ewes induced a higher plasma T4 concentration in lambs at birth. The decrease in plasma immunoglobulins G (IgG) recorded for the lambs in this group might be explained by this increase in plasma concentration.  相似文献

Finn x Dorset ewe lambs (n = 70) born in the spring (March 28 to April 6) from two successive lambing seasons were evaluated for age at first ovulation in the absence of mature rams. Ewe lambs were born in a controlled, short light (8L:16D) photoperiod or in ambient light (13L:11D). At about 10 to 11 wk of age, ewe lambs were allocated to a short (8L:16D) or long (16L:8D) light environment. Plasma progesterone (P(4)) concentrations were measured as an index of first ovulation. First exposure of ewes to sexually mature rams was in November. Most ewe lambs (77%) ovulated before ram exposure. More lambs (P < 0.025) born in ambient light and raised in short light reached puberty with typical cycles of plasma progesterone compared to other treatments. Long days tended to retard the onset of puberty. Although pregnancy rate did not differ across light treatments, more ewes became pregnant from the ambient-light born and short-light raised treatment. Photoperiod is an important factor affecting the onset of sexual maturation and genesis of normal luteal progesterone secretion in the ewe lamb.  相似文献

Individual groups of 6 ram lambs were housed within a controlled environment and exposed to one of 6 photoperiod schedules. Groups I and II received 8 (short day) or 16 (long day) h of continuous light, respectively; Groups III, IV and V were exposed to asymmetrical skeleton photoperiods consisting of a main light period of 7 h followed 9 h later by a light pulse of 1 h, 15 min or 1 min duration, respectively, and Group VI was exposed to a symmetrical skeleton photoperiod consisting of two 1-h light pulses positioned 16 h apart. After 4 weeks of treatment serum concentrations of prolactin and testosterone were measured over 24 h. Long-day responses characteristic of the 16L:8D photoperiod (i.e. elevated prolactin and reduced testosterone) were obtained in each of the asymmetric light-pulse treatment groups, but whereas prolactin was elevated over the full 24 h in lambs exposed to 16L:8D, two prominent nocturnal prolactin releases were largely responsible for the high 24-h mean prolactin values in Groups III, IV and V. Reduced serum testosterone in these same groups could not be attributed to a diurnal pattern of secretion but was associated with an overall decrease in testosterone pulse frequency. Prolactin and testosterone levels in Group IV were intermediate between those observed in lambs exposed to 8 or 16 h of light. In summary, light pulses of short duration (1 min) positioned at 17 h after dawn can produce endocrine changes in lambs similar to those observed in lambs exposed to 16 h of continuous light.  相似文献

Over a period of 8 weeks ram lambs (16 weeks old) were made hyperthyroidal (serum thyroxine approximately equal to 150 ng/ml, compared with control approximately equal to 48 ng/ml) by daily subcutaneous injections of thyroxine or maintained at a constant body weight by restriction of the feed intake. Hyperthyroidal and restricted-intake lambs remained at a constant body weight during the period of treatment whilst control rams gained body weight. Testicular growth was normal in restricted-intake lambs but was suppressed in hyperthyroidal animals. Hyperthyroidism, but not feed restriction, was also associated with decrease in LH pulse frequency (1.3 +/- 0.3/12 h compared with controls 4.8 +/- 0.9/12 h. Hyperthyroidal lambs showed normal LH responses to exogenous LHRH. After cessation of treatment testicular growth continued to be suppressed for up to 16 weeks in previously hyperthyroidic rams; thereafter testes began to increase in size but at 30 weeks after treatment were still smaller than those of control rams. It is concluded that elevated thyroxine concentrations directly influence sexual maturation in ram lambs through actions at hypothalamic and/or higher brain centres which control LH secretion. Transient hyperthyroidism during sexual maturation may cause permanent impairment of sexual development.  相似文献

Thirty healthy Sohagi ram lambs with an average age of 188.6±7.3 days were used to study the effect of pre-pubertal growth rate on some physiological parameters and sexual behavioral patterns at puberty. Ram lambs were divided into three groups (10 animals per each group) according to the previous growth rate until 6 months of age. Groups were marked as fast, medium and slow growing. Animal groups were housed in closed barns with access to an open area. Results showed that age and weight of ram lambs at puberty were significantly affected (P<0.05) by the pre-pubertal growth rate. Ram lambs in the fast growing group were reached to onset puberty firstly at 272.6 days with body weight (BW) 37.1 kg on average then ram lambs in medium group (284.8 days with BW 32.7 kg), while ram lambs in slow growing group were the last (314.1 days with BW 32.5 kg). Blood‎ testosterone‎ concentration at puberty was not significantly different among growing groups (1.494± 0.03 ng/ml on average, ranged from 1.287 to 1.902 ng/ml). Testes measurements from 6 months of age until puberty show that ram lambs in fast growing group had the highest values of testes length, circumference and volume followed by those in medium and slow growing group. Sexual behavioral observation showed that flehmen and mounting behavior were significantly higher for ram lambs in fast growing group (5.63 and 6.75 number/12h) than slow growing group (4.25 and 5.38 number/12h) while in medium growing group were intermediate (4.88 and 5.88 number/12h). From these findings, could be concluded that age, weight and sexual behavioral patterns of Sohagi ram lambs at puberty were affected by pre-pubertal growth rate, and the breeders should strive to achieve good growth rates for their lambs before puberty which led to improving reproductive performance.  相似文献

Sixteen pinealectomized and 19 unoperated ewes were exposed to constant light for about 4 weeks before and 4 weeks after lambing. Six ram lambs born to unoperated ewes were implanted s.c. with melatonin sachets while 8 ram lambs were implanted with empty sachets. The 8 ram lambs born to pinealectomized dams also received empty implants. Ewes and lambs were then returned to the field. Analysis of weekly blood samples indicated that prolactin secretion was significantly decreased in the ram lambs with empty implants between 44-51 weeks of age whereas lambs treated with melatonin failed to show a significant change during development. All 3 groups of rams had elevated LH levels between 7 and 17 weeks of age, and a second period of high LH between 27 and 40 weeks. There were no significant differences between groups in the patterns of FSH secretion; FSH was highest between 7 and 17 weeks of age, and again between 27 and 40 weeks of age. Plasma testosterone levels in all groups increased gradually between 4 and 35 weeks. Between 38 and 48 weeks of age testosterone concentrations were markedly elevated in all groups. Growth was not affected by melatonin treatment. These results indicate that neonatal melatonin treatment has subtle endocrine effects; whether these effects are sufficient to compromise fertility in the ram, however, remains to be established.  相似文献

The ability of ram introduction (RI) and progesterone pre-treatment to induce increases in LH secretion and ovulation, and the ability of progesterone pre-treatment with or without estrogen to induce estrus and ovulation in fall-born ewe lambs during seasonal anestrus was investigated. In early July, lambs of mixed breeds (41.8+/-0.6 kg and 250.7+/-1.3 days of age) were assigned to receive no treatment (C, n=7), to be introduced to rams (7:1 ewe:ram ratio; R, n=7), to be treated with progesterone (a used CIDR device) for 5 days (P, n=5), to be treated with progesterone and introduced to rams at CIDR removal (PR, n=11), or to receive the latter treatment plus an injection of estradiol benzoate (25 microg, E2beta i.m.) 24 h after CIDR withdrawal/RI (PER, n=11). Blood samples were collected from all lambs every 4h for 60 h beginning at RI/CIDR withdrawal (0 h), to characterize the LH surge profile and in groups R and C every 15 min for 8 h between 12 and 20 h for determination of LH pulse frequencies. Ultrasonographic examinations of the ovaries were conducted at 0, 36 and 60 h. In ram-exposed groups lambs were also observed for raddle marks every 4h from 0 to 60 h. The LH pulse frequency (pulses/8 h) was higher in group R (P<0.01; 7.7+/- 0.5) than group C lambs (2.7+/- 0.8). More lambs in groups exposed to rams than in the C or P groups showed an LH surge (P<0.05; 0, 100, 0, 72.7 and 100%, for C, R, P, PR and PER groups, respectively). Time from RI/CIDR removal to initiation of the LH surge was greater in lambs in the PR (43.5+/- 3.8h) than in the R (32.6+/- 4.6h; P=0.08) or PER (33+/- 1.2h; P<0.01). Diameter of the largest follicle at 0 h (3.2+/- 0.2mm) was not different among groups. Growth rate of the largest follicle between 0 and 36 h was greater (P<0.05) in RI than in C or P groups. Diameter of the largest follicle at 36 h was larger (P<0.05) in lambs in R (5.6+/- 0.2mm) and PR (5.1+/- 0.5mm) than C (4.0+/- 0.6mm) or P (3.8+/- 0.4mm) groups, and in R than PER (4.3+/- 0.4mm) treatment groups. Only lambs in the RI groups ovulated. Among RI groups the percentage of lambs ovulating was greater in the R (P<0.05; 85.7%) than PR (33.3%) groups with an intermediate response observed in lambs in treatment group PER (71.4%). The estrous response in progesterone pre-treated groups was greater (P<0.05) in lambs also treated with estrogen (PER; 81.8%), than in lambs introduced to rams alone (PR; 45.5%). In conclusion, ram introduction by itself, but not progesterone treatment alone, induces increases in LH pulse frequency, follicular development, and ovulation in fall-born ewe lambs during seasonal anestrus, further, P4 pre-treatment and RI when combined with E2 results in a high estrous response.  相似文献

Active immunization against inhibin has been shown to advance puberty and increase ovulation rate in ewe lambs; but in ram lambs, effects on puberty and sperm production are equivocal. The objective of the present study was to determine whether active immunization against an inhibin alpha-subunit peptide advances the onset of puberty in ram lambs. St. Croix hair sheep ram lambs were assigned to inhibin-immunized (n = 7) and control (n = 8) treatment groups. Lambs in the inhibin-immunized group were immunized against a synthetic peptide-carrier protein conjugate, alpha-(1-25)-human alpha-globulin (halpha-G), and control lambs were immunized against halpha-G. Lambs were immunized at 3, 7, 13, 19, 25, 31, and 37 weeks of age. On the day of immunization a blood sample was collected and lambs were weighed. Another blood sample was collected 1 week following each immunization. At 20 weeks of age additional blood samples were collected at 20 min intervals for 8h. Beginning at 20 weeks of age and at weekly intervals thereafter, scrotal circumference (SC) was measured and semen was collected using electroejaculation. A subsequent ejaculate was collected 1 week following onset of puberty, which was defined as the week of age when an ejaculate first contained > or =50 x 10(6) sperm cells. In control lambs, plasma alpha-(1-25)-antibody (Ab) was nondetectable. In inhibin-immunized lambs, alpha-(1-25)-Ab titer increased from 7 to 25 weeks of age and then plateaued at a level that varied (P<0.001) among animals. Body weight and SC of control and inhibin-immunized lambs were similar at the onset of puberty. At pubertal onset inhibin-immunized lambs were older than control lambs (31.9+/-0.5 vs. 29.5+/-0.7 weeks of age, P<0.05). Plasma FSH concentrations were similar in control and inhibin-immunized lambs from 3 to 38 weeks of age. Plasma LH levels were lower (P<0.01) in inhibin-immunized than control lambs. During the 8-h blood sampling period at 20 weeks of age, LH and testosterone concentrations were lower (P<0.05) in inhibin-immunized than control ram lambs, and the LH pulse frequency was similar in the two groups of animals. The decreased LH secretion is consistent with the immunoneutralization of a putative inhibin alpha-subunit-related peptide that stimulates LH secretion in ram lambs. Present findings show that active immunization against an inhibin alpha-peptide delays rather than advances puberty in ram lambs.  相似文献

Twelve Romney lambs and 10 Angora goats were infected with 7000 infective third-stage larvae (89% Trichostrongylus, 11% Ostertagia) collected from goats suspected of harbouring ivermectin-resistant nematodes. On 28 days p.i., the lambs and goats were divided into treatment and control groups of six and five animals, respectively. The animals in the treatment groups were treated with ivermectin (0.2 mg/kg) and necropsied 35 days p.i. Faecal egg counts were estimated on days 28 and 35 p.i. and larval development assays (LDAs) were conducted on 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34 and 35 days p.i. The ivermectin treatment reduced Trichostronglus colubriformis burdens by 39% and 13% and Ostertagia circumcincta by 33% and 0% in lambs and goats, respectively. When compared with a susceptible strain, the LDAs indicated a resistance factor before treatment in lambs for T. colubriformis of 2.6 and 1.5 with ivermectin and avermectin B2, respectively, which rose to 3.4 and 2.0 after treatment. The LD50 values of the two control groups were relatively constant throughout the experiment. Prior to ivermectin treatment the LD50 values of the treated groups were similar (P > 0.05) to the control groups but following ivermectin treatment their LD50 values increased steadily until the animals were killed on 35 days p.i. The LD50 values for ivermectin and avermectin B2 of sheep were always slightly higher and significantly different (P < 0.01) than those of goats indicating a host effect on this parameter. The greater reduction in worm counts in goats suggests a difference in the efficacy of ivermectin between lambs and goats. This is the first confirmed report of ivermectin resistance in a field strain of T. colubriformis.  相似文献

Ram lambs and bull calves were immunized against LH-RH by injections given in weeks 0, 6, 12 and 28 (ram lambs, week 0 = 16 to 20 weeks of age) and weeks 0, 6, 12 and 18 (bull calves, week 0 = approximately 4 weeks of age). The testis size of LH-RH-immunized animals was significantly less than that of controls from week 13 onwards in ram lambs and from week 15 onwards in bull calves. When ram lambs were sampled in week 17 and bull calves in week 20, mean plasma gonadotrophin and testosterone concentrations were consistently lower in LH-RH-immunized animals than in controls. Single intravenous injection of synthetic LH-RH or an analogue of LH-RH in week 27 failed to induce LH or testosterone responses in LH-RH-immunized ram lambs. Motile semen samples could not be obtained from any of the LH-RH-immunized ram lambs in weeks 24, 25 and 26 or from 7 of 10 in week 72, but samples of moderate motility were obtained in week 72 from three rams in which LH-RH antibody titres had fallen. No attempt was made to obtain semen from bull calves. After castration there was no increase in plasma LH in LH-RH-immunized rams and only a small increase in LH-RH-immunized bull calves. Mean testis weight was significantly lower in LH-RH-immunized animals than in controls of both species. Thus the normal development of the reproductive system in ram lambs and bull calves was blocked by active immunization against LH-RH. Some evidence was obtained for natural reversal of the effects with time and falling antibody titres. These findings demonstrate the potential of LH-RH immunization as an alternative to castration.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of a single generation of artificial selection for sexual performance in rams on the sexual behavior and fecundity of their male and female progeny. Ninety-two ram lambs born to sires selected for either high or low sexual performance were evaluated for their sexual behaviors at approximately 8 months of age when individually exposed to four estrous ewes for 30min in four weekly serving capacity tests. Number of mounts and successful matings (ejaculations) were recorded. Fourteen of the 17 high-performing ram lambs identified were sired by high-performing sires, whereas 22 of 37 low-performing ram lambs were sired by low-performing sires (P<0.01). Sons of high-performing sires exhibited more ejaculations (P<0.04) and more mounts without ejaculation (P<0.02) than sons of low-performing sires. The two groups of ram lambs did not differ in mating efficiency (ratio of ejaculations to total mounts). Daughters of high-performing rams (N=79) exhibited their first behavioral estrus approximately 8 days earlier than daughters (N=61) of low-performing sires (P<0.005). Ovulation rates for the two groups of ewe lambs did not differ (P=0.55). It was concluded that there was sufficient genetic variation in the population of sheep studied to obtain a significant response to selection for ram sexual performance in both male and female offspring in a single generation.  相似文献

Annual rhythms of body weight and reproduction in the European hamster (Cricetus cricetus) are the result of an interaction between seasonal changes in day length (photoperiod) and seasonal changes in the responsiveness of animals to these photoperiods. The present study demonstrates that under natural conditions European hamsters are not able to perceive long photoperiods (i.e., a 16L:8D cycle) before mid-November. This is an important difference to other hamster species, in which regrowth of the gonads can be stimulated by exposure to long photoperiods at any stage of gonadal regression. The experiments also demonstrate the existence of an annual phase of sensitivity to long photoperiods that starts around mid-November and extends until March/April. During this phase of sensitivity, exposure to a long photoperiod (16L:8D) induced gonadal regrowth within 3 wk. Additional experiments with an accelerated photoperiodic lighting regimen indicated that a photoperiod of approximately 13 h is necessary to stimulate gonadal regrowth. Under natural light conditions in Stuttgart (48.46 degrees N), a photoperiod of 13 h is reached by the beginning of April, which fits well with the finding that the majority of animals kept under a natural light:dark cycle had well-developed gonads by the end of April. Nevertheless, these animals showed a rather variable timing of gonadal regrowth, ranging from early January to late April. This is most likely the result of two processes: first, an endogenous mechanism (photorefractoriness) that induces gonadal recrudescence without any photoperiodic information while the animals are still in their hibernation burrows, and second, a direct stimulatory effect of long photoperiods.  相似文献

The efficacy of using a low cost system for delivering progesterone as part of an estrous synchronization protocol in sheep was evaluated. In experiment 1, Barbados Black Belly ewes (n=34) and ewe lambs (n=35; 37.5±0.9 kg) were assigned to be untreated, control animals (C), or to receive PGF(2α) on d0 (PG), or receive two injections of progesterone (200mg, i.m. each) on D -5 and on D -2.5, prior to PGF(2α), on D 0 (2PPG). Treatment with 2PPG increased the proportion of animals lambing to the first service (P<0.05), an effect that was greater in ewe lambs than ewes (treatment × parity; P<0.05). The interval from ram introduction to lambing and the mean lambing day was less (P=0.04) in the 2PPG-treated animals compared to control animals. In Experiment 2, lactating ewes from experiment 1 (n=61) 60-85 days postpartum were assigned within parity and number of lambs reared to remain nursing (S; n=29) or weaned (W; n=32) 3 weeks prior to treatment with the 2PPG protocol. There was no effect of treatment on the proportion of animals lambing to the first service or overall, interval from ram introduction to lambing and lambing interval. An 8-month lambing interval was observed in ewes in which estrus was synchronized regardless of physiological state. In conclusion, the two-progesterone injection synchronization protocol may be used as a practical low cost and efficient method of synchronizing estrus to reduce the lambing interval and maximize productivity in tropical breeds of sheep.  相似文献

Ewes were each mated on four separate occasions, at 3, 9, 15 and 21 h after the start of oestrus and at each time by a different ram. The progeny were assigned to sires by blood typing, supplemented by resemblance between lambs and rams. The paternity of 64 lambs, born to 41 ewes, was established: 2 were conceived at a 3-h mating, 27 at 9h, 23 at 15 h and 12 at 21 h. The optimum time for a ram to inseminate, when in competition with others, is therefore 9-15 h after onset of oestrus, and this finding accords with behavioural observations. Ewes tended to lamb during the same half of the day as that when they had come into oestrus.  相似文献

Observations relating testes size to body weight in growing and adult Polish Merino rams were performed during 3 consecutive years in a flock of 1700 pedigree ewes. October-born ram lambs were measured for testis diameter (TD), scrotal circumference (SC), and body weight (BW) at 100 (January), 150 (March), 180 (April), 240 (June), 365 (October), and 480 d (February) of age. In adult rams (n = 63 to 73 per year) BW and SC were measured in March, May (prior to breeding), August and October. Semen quality was evaluated before each breeding season, and the results of controlled reproductive performance (2 natural services to designated rams) were analyzed. Indices were applied to relate testis size to body weight: TD BW , SC BW and TW BW . Heritability estimates of testes indices in ram lambs at 100 to 240 d and at 480 d of age ranged from 0.21 to 0.36 (SE = 0.067 to 0.090). In two experiments 48 prepuberal Merino ewe lambs were injected with oestradiol-17 beta (E2) or saline to study the effect of E2 on their plasma LH levels and on oestrus and ovulation. In the three groups which received 30 (experiment I), 50 and 30 (experiment II) microgram E2 respectively, 27 out of 28 lambs showed an LH response, the corresponding mean LH peaks being 64.3 +/0 22.5, 153.6 +/-33.4 and 91.7 +/- 16.9 ng/ml at mean intervals of 11.1, 11.2 and 10.5 h, respectively, after injection. None of the 20 lambs in the control groups had an LH level higher than 18 ng/ml 12 h after injection. In the three E2 groups, 41.7, 62.5 and 37.5% of animals showed oestrus within 26 h of injection while in the control groups only one animal showed oestrus. Of 13 animals showing oestrus in the E2 groups, 11 failed to ovulate. The mean pre-injection plasma FSH level in experiment I was 102.7 ng/ml, and in four 5--7-month-old lambs over several weeks uas 155.3 ng/ml. Despite these high pre-injection levels of FSH, it appears that the follicles were unable to respond to the LH peak which followed the E2 injection.  相似文献

The effects of defaunation on growth and digestion were measured in sheep fed fresh Digitaria decumbens grass cut at four stages of regrowth 14, 28, 42, and 56 days, and with different protein to energy (P/E) ratios. Two completely randomized designs trials (growth and digestion) were conducted using faunated animals, defaunated rams and protozoa free lambs. The digestion trial: eight faunated and eight defaunated rams fitted with ruminal and duodenal cannulas were fed 4 diets (diets D1 to D4) to measure digestion parameters. The dietary P/E ratios were 120 (D1), 130 (D2), 130 (D3), and 140 (D4) g PDIN/UFL (Protein Digested in the small Intestine supplied by microbial protein from rumen-degraded protein/Feed Unit for Lactation) and the grass stages of regrowth were 56, 42, 28, and 14 days, respectively. Increasing the dietary P/E ratios increased dry matter intake (DMI) and the total tract digestibility of organic matter (OM), NDF and CP. Defaunation decreased DMI, except for rams fed D4 diet. Defaunation also decreased total tract digestibility of OM except for rams fed D1 diet and that of NDF except for rams fed D1 and D4 diets. Increasing the dietary P/E ratios also increased nitrogen intake and ammonia (NH3) concentration in the rumen, whereas defaunation decreased them. The dietary P/E ratio increased non-NH3 nitrogen and microbial nitrogen duodenal flows and microbial efficiency. Defaunation did not affect duodenal flows of neither non-NH3 nitrogen and microbial nitrogen or microbial efficiency. The growth trial: 20 faunated and 20 protozoa free lambs were fed four diets (diets D5 to D8) to measure their average daily gain (ADG). The dietary P/E ratios were 60 (D5), 70 (D6), 80 (D7) and 100 (D8) g PDIN/UFL and the stages of regrowth were 56, 42, 28, and 14 days, respectively. DMI of lambs increased with P/E ratio. Protozoa free lambs had greater DMI than faunated ones when fed D7 diet (80.8 v. 74.9 g/kg LW0.75, respectively). The ADG of the lambs increased with P/E ratio. Fed on the same D5 diet, protozoa free lambs had greater ADG than faunated lambs (29.8 v. 11.6 g/day, respectively). In conclusion, animal response to defaunation was modulated by the P/E ratio of the D. decumbens grass diets. The fate of orally administered ampicillin was studied in axenic lambs, in gnotoxenic lambs given a complex microflora and a mixture of ampicillin resistant and/or sensitive strains of Escherichia coli, and in conventional lambs. In axenic lambs or animals with a sensitive microflora, antibiotic concentrations of 500-1600 micrograms ml-1 were detected in the intestine, and most of the ampicillin passed through the small intestine and entered the large intestine, within 12-15 h of administration. These antibiotic concentrations were sufficient to decrease the numbers of ampicillin-sensitive E. coli from 10(8)-10(9) bacteria ml-1 to about 10(5)-10(6) bacteria ml-1 by 8 h after ampicillin administration. Second and third doses of antibiotic had no further effect on the bacterial count. Administration of ampicillin to animals hosting ampicillin-resistant E. coli resulted in a significant inactivation of the antibiotic in the intestine. As might be expected there was little reduction in the numbers of these organisms. These results are similar to those observed in conventional lambs hosting resistant E. coli as the dominant colibacillary flora.  相似文献

Sixteen native ram lambs weaned at 10 wk of age were divided into two groups. Eight animals were immunized against LHRH with a mixture of two fusion proteins: ovalbumin-LHRH-7 and thioredoxin-LHRH-7. The immunized lambs received a primary immunization plus two booster immunizations at 4 and 12 wks. Animals in the control group (n=8) were not treated. Scrotal measurements and blood samples were taken at 2-week intervals. Beginning at 25 wk of age, semen was collected and sexual behaviour was evaluated on a weekly basis. At 35 and 37 wk of age testes and accessory glands of all animals were subjected to ultrasound scanning. At 37 wk of age animals were slaughtered and testes were evaluated histologically. Serum LHRH antibodies (P<0.01) were detected in animals of the immunized group which had reduced serum testosterone concentrations (P<0.01). Testicular development was suppressed in the immunized animals (P<0.01). Immunized animals exhibited mounting activity 5 wks later than control animals. No mature spermatozoa containing ejaculates were collected from immunized animals. Control animals had moderately echogenic ultrasonographic appearance at 37 wk age, whereas immunized animals had hypoechogenic images. Mean seminiferous tubule diameter in immunized lambs was significantly smaller than that in control lambs. Basal membrane was thickened and hyalinized; there was an increase in peritubular connective tissue. No proliferating spermatogonia or mature spermatozoa were present in the tubules in these animals. There were no differences in the ultrasonographic appearance of prostate and vesicular gland between control and immunized animals. The LHRH recombinant fusion proteins were effective in immunological castration in ram lambs when started at 10 wk of age as noted by differences in serum testosterone, testicular histology and ultrasonographic appearance of testis and weight of accessory sex glands. Determining the effects of immunization on ultrasonographic appearance of the testis related to time after immunization requires further investigations.  相似文献

Age at puberty, fertility and litter size of ewe lambs of synthetic sire and dam strains raised under different photoregimens were determined. The lambs were bred during January, May or September at 30 to 32 weeks of age. Irrespective of birth date, the lambs were reared under continuous light from birth to 5 weeks of age. From 5 to 20 weeks of age, they were kept under 16 hours of light dairy (16L:8D; Treatment A), 8 hours of light daily (8L:16D; Treatment B), or a split photoperiod of 8 hours total light daily (7L:9D:1L:7D; Treatment C). Subsequently, all lambs were exposed to 9 hours of light daily until after breeding. Lambs were exposed to rams for two estrous periods after treatment with fluorogestone acetate-impregnated intravaginal sponges and pregnant mares' serum gonadotropin (PMSG) to induce synchronized estrus. Although the age at puberty (174 days) was similar among treatments, the incidence of puberty prior to progestagen sponge treatment was higher ( approximately 50%) for lambs reared under Treatments A and C than under Treatment B. Fertility and litter size of lambs were not influenced by the previous photoperiod history or by sexual maturity, i.e., puberal or prepuberal, at the start of the sponge treatment. However, strain, age and weight of lambs at breeding influenced significantly the reproductive outcome.  相似文献
