Bucks show seasonal variation in their body weight and sexual activity. Three groups of six Alpine and Saanen bucks were used over two consecutive years to investigate if rapid alternations between long and short days could abolish this seasonal variation. The control group was kept under natural annual daylength, while the experimental groups were exposed to alternations of either 1 month of 16L:8D and 1 month of 8L:16D (2-month treatment) or to 2 months of 16L:8D and 2 months of 8L:16D (4-month treatment). In the control group, body weight, sexual behavior, testicular weight and sperm production showed important seasonal variations: body weight decreased between September and January by about 7 kg; refusal to ejaculate went up to 25% in August; testicular weight varied from 103 +/- 2 g (March) to 149 +/- 7 g (October). In contrast, seasonal variations of these parameters decreased in the two experimental groups. In the 2-month treatment group, testicular weight increased from 134 +/- 7 (March) to 148 +/- 8 g (October); while in the 4-month treatment group it increased from 123 +/- 10 to 138 +/- 12 g, respectively; in the same period, the two experimental groups of bucks produced a larger total number of spermatozoa per ejaculate (6.3 +/- 0.3 x 10(9); 2-month treatment and 7.2 +/- 0.3; 4-month treatment) than in the control group (4.2 +/- 0.4). We conclude that rapid alternations between long and short days decreased seasonality in the sexual activity of bucks.  相似文献

F. pennanti presented a clear biphasic pineal mediated seasonal sexual cycle. This sexual cycle was essentially characterised by a very short period of sexual quiescence with an arrest of spermatogenesis during October-November. A small but clear decrease in sexual activity was also observed during March-April. This decrease in sexual activity, however, had no quantifiable effect on spermatogenesis. Sexual recrudescence was observed from December-January. The testes remained sexually active from January till September. Almost an inverse relationship was observed between pineal and testicular weight. Pinealectomy, however, prevented naturally induced gonadal regression during both the periods, i.e. September-November and February-April. Exposure of animals to high RH (80 +/- 4%) during sexually active phase induced a steep regression in testicular weight of sham-operated animals even in the presence of gonad stimulatory long photoperiod (16L:8D) and high temperature (40 degrees +/- 5 degrees C) while exposure of animals to moderate RH (65 +/- 5%) during sexual regression phase partially prevented testicular regression even in presence of inhibitory short photoperiod (11L:13D) and normal environmental temperature (30 degrees +/- 5 degrees C). Pinealectomized animals, neither exhibited testicular regression in February-March nor had involuted testes in September-October, thus, suggesting that the effect of humidity is mediated via the pineal gland.  相似文献

Body weight, testicle size and peripheral testosterone concentrations were measured in 35 water buffalo bulls at 5, 15, 17, 21, 25 and 38 months of age. These parameters were studied in all animals during the same month (October), so the changes due to age were independent of changes in photoperiod and temperature. Body weight increased linearly with age. The testicular size measured in terms of scrotal circumference as related to age, showed a curvilinear increase; the average rate of testicular growth was maximum between 15 and 25 months. Plasma testosterone levels were low between 5 and 21 months. A significant rise in plasma concentration of testosterone was observed at 25 months reaching peak levels at 38 months. The mean age of sexually mature bulls at the time of first ejaculation of semen with motile sperm, was 24.9±0.9 months (n=9). It has been concluded that in the Nili-Ravi buffalo bulls the sexually quiescent period (prepubertal) extends up to 15 months of age and sexual maturation as indicated by the presence of motile sperm in the ejaculate is attained at about 25 months.  相似文献

The pattern of testicular and epididymal development of 93 Bos indicus cross bulls aged between 4 and 27 months was measured by means of semi-quantitative histology. In the testis, weight and seminiferous tubule diameter developed in a curvilinear fashion and the lumen formed during the period of rapid testicular growth. Epididymal development followed an ascending pattern, progressing from the cauda to the caput, and varied from curvilinear growth in the proximal regions to a more linear growth distally. After differentiation, mean tubular diameters, corrected for tissue shrinkage, were 207, 373, 353 and 405 μm for testis, caput, corpus and cauda, respectively, and epithelial heights were 66.9, 92.5 and 76.7 μm in caput, corpus and cauda, respectively.Contemporary Friesian bull calves had greater testicular and epididymal weights and tubular dimensions than Bos indicus cross bulls of similar age when compared on a liveweight basis. Despite a similar pattern of reproductive development in both strains, these results suggest a delayed and slower rate of sexual maturation in Bos indicus cross bulls.  相似文献

On a global scale, cereal grains and animal feed may be contaminated with trichothecenes, such as deoxynivalenol and T-2 toxin, zearalenone (ZEA), and fumonisins, the major mycotoxins of Fusarium fungi. Of these mycotoxins, ZEA is unequivocally implicated in reproductive disorders of swine and other domestic animals. Experiments in vivo and in vitro indicate that ZEA and its metabolites exert estrogenic effects resulting in functional and morphological alterations in reproductive organs. Recently, the potential of trichothecenes and fumonisins to cause reproductive disorders in domestic animals has been investigated. The present review summarizes the toxicological data on the effects of Fusarium mycotoxins on ovarian function, testicular function, placenta and fetus, and puberty/sexual maturity of domestic animals. The results of in vivo animal studies and in vitro tests are reported and discussed.  相似文献

Mean circulating concentrations and seasonal changes in plasma testosterone over 3 years were similar in free-ranging and captive male armadillos. The highest concentrations were seen in the summer months, i.e. at the time of maximum breeding, but the relatiely high values at other times and the inability of ACTH to restore dexamethasone-suppressed testosterone concentrations confirms that testicular function continues throughout the year. There was a gradual rise in plasma testosterone to adult levels from the 5th to the 9th month of life in captive-born males, indicating that sexual maturity is reached within the first year of life and that captivity is not deleterious to Leydig cell function.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine if there is a seasonal pattern of reproductive activity in male Payoya goats and if this seasonality can be modulated by a higher level of nutrition. For a period of 16 months, 10 adult bucks were divided into two experimental groups that differed in their feeding level. The high nutrition group (H, n = 5) received 1.6 times their maintenance food requirements. The control nutrition group (C, n = 5) received a diet that supported 1.1 times their maintenance requirements. Body weight and testosterone concentrations were determined weekly, and testicular weight was determined every 2 weeks. Sexual behaviour and semen characteristics were determined monthly. Feeding level did not affect the onset or the end of the reproductive activity as measured by testosterone concentrations, with high testosterone concentrations between July and November. Ejaculation latency was positively influenced by feeding level: 43.2 ± 2.2 s vs. 61.6 ± 3.2 s for H and C group, respectively (P < 0.001). The percentage of males that ejaculated or that were sexually active was higher in the H group (P < 0.01). No differences between feeding levels were observed in the different semen characteristics studied. However, major differences between months were observed for all studied variables. These results lead us to conclude that Payoya bucks exhibit large seasonal variation in their reproductive activity. Higher feeding level allowed a better sexual behaviour in bucks in late spring, when male effect is used on the local livestock to breed females.  相似文献

The present study was undertaken to clarify the annual changes in testicular function of Japanese monkeys under laboratory conditions. Five adult males were kept in an air-conditioned room with artificial 12/12 hr lighting. Measurements of body weight and blood sampling were conducted monthly for 13 months. The concentrations of plasma testosterone were determined by radio-immunoassay. The testicular size was measured and testicular tissues taken by biopsy were examined histologically at the four seasons. The body weight and plasma testosterone levels showed coincidental annual changes with a peak in September and a nadir in March or May. The percentage of seminiferous tubules including pachytene spermatocytes and the number of pachytene spermatocytes in tubular cross-sections were significantly increased in both the autumn and winter and decreased in the spring. Electron microscopically, the seasonal change was reflected in an increased size of fat granules in Sertoli cells in the breeding season.  相似文献

Effective contraception would enhance genetic management of captive Pteropus species, which typically breed well in captivity. Male reproductive seasonality was monitored (15-mo interval) in captive P. alecto (6 controls and 5 treated with 4.7 mg deslorelin). In untreated males, there were seasonal changes in testicular volume, body weight and testosterone secretion; testicular volume and body weight peaked in February and March, respectively, whereas testosterone concentration remained >5 ng/ml before rising (P < 0.001) to 24.9 ± 3.6 ng/ml (mean ± SEM) in April. However, there was no corresponding change in sperm quality, and seminal vesicle gland (SVG) secretions remained present in ejaculates. In treated males, testosterone concentration had an initial ‘flare’ response (mean ± SEM peak: 19.95 ± 3.27 ng/ml) before declining (P < 0.001) by 32 d to basal levels, where it remained. In these males, there was reduced sperm motility after 1 mo (P < 0.001) and the absence of SVG secretions after 4 mo. However, aspermic ejaculates were first recorded 5 mo post-treatment. At 10 mo after treatment, spermatogenesis was still disrupted, when membrane-intact, but non-motile sperm were present in two individuals. Motile sperm were first recovered from one of these males 13 mo after deslorelin treatment. We concluded that captive P. alecto males: (a) had seasonal reproductive changes in testicular volume, body weight and testosterone secretion; (b) produced motile, membrane-intact sperm and SVG secretions throughout the year; and (c) had a rapid decline in testosterone concentration and consequent suppression of testicular function for at least 5 mo following deslorelin administration.  相似文献

The histological changes in the testis and epididymis of the American Grey squirrel, Sciurus carolinensis (Gmelin) during development and the testicular cycle are described. It was observed that male Grey squirrels, as a population, did not undergo a pronounced seasonal reproductive cycle, however, individual males did experience periods of reproductive inactivity which were asynchronous and not related to seasonal changes in the environment. It is suggested that the individual sexual cycles are due to an endogenous rhythm of gonadotrophin secretion by the pituitaries of these animals.  相似文献

The KiSS-1 gene encodes kisspeptin, the endogenous ligand of the G-protein-coupled receptor GPR54. Recent data indicate that the KiSS-1/GPR54 system is critical for the regulation of reproduction and is required for puberty onset. In seasonal breeders, reproduction is tightly controlled by photoperiod (i.e., day length). The Syrian hamster is a seasonal model in which reproductive activity is promoted by long summer days (LD) and inhibited by short winter days (SD). Using in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry, we show that KiSS-1 is expressed in the arcuate nucleus of LD hamsters. Importantly, the KiSS-1 mRNA level was lower in SD animals but not in SD-refractory animals, which spontaneously reactivated their sexual activity after several months in SD. These changes of expression are not secondary to the photoperiodic variations of gonadal steroids. In contrast, melatonin appears to be necessary for these seasonal changes because pineal-gland ablation prevented the SD-induced downregulation of KiSS-1 expression. Remarkably, a chronic administration of kisspeptin-10 restored the testicular activity of SD hamsters despite persisting photoinhibitory conditions. Overall, these findings are consistent with a role of KiSS-1/GPR54 in the seasonal control of reproduction. We propose that photoperiod, via melatonin, modulates KiSS-1 signaling to drive the reproductive axis.  相似文献

Most male mammals in temperate regions demonstrate seasonal sexual behaviors that coincide with seasonal variations in gonadal activities and androgen hormones. The Yangtze finless porpoise is a temperate freshwater cetacean species and an obvious seasonal breeder. To investigate the relationship between sexual behavior and gonadal activity in this animal, testicular size (volume) and structure (ultrasonogram pixel intensity) of two adult male porpoises (AF, AB) and one sub-adult male (TT) were longitudinally monitored from November 2008 to November 2009. Serum testosterone concentration was also monitored during the same period. Variations in the frequency of sexual behavior in AF and AB had similar, but seasonal trends. Their testicular size and pixel intensity also varied seasonally. Testicular size increased in March, peaked from April through June, and decreased gradually from August through September, whereas testicular pixel intensity started to increase in early February. The frequency of sexual behavior was positively correlated with testicular volume and pixel intensity (P = 0.000018 and P = 0.00012, respectively) in AF. Serum testosterone concentrations also varied. The sub-adult male porpoise, TT, was undergoing puberty, as evidenced by its marked increase in testicular volume, testicular pixel intensity, and serum testosterone concentrations from the beginning of 2009. Interestingly, TT exhibited the highest frequency of sexual behavior, most of which was same-sex pairing. However, its oversexed behavior neither quantitatively correlated with its smaller testicular volume (P = 0.61) nor with its testicular pixel intensity (P = 0.69).  相似文献

Spermatogenesis is a costly process that is expected to be under selection to maximise sperm quantity and quality. Testis size is often regarded as a proxy measure of sperm investment, implicitly overlooking the quantitative assessment of spermatogenesis. An enhanced understanding of testicular function, beyond testis size, may reveal further sexual traits involved in sperm quantity and quality. Here, we first estimated the inter-male variation in testicular function and sperm traits in red deer across the breeding and non-breeding seasons. Then, we analysed the relationships between the testis mass, eight parameters of spermatogenic function, and seven parameters of sperm quality. Our findings revealed that the Sertoli cell number and function parameters vary greatly between red deer males, and that spermatogenic activity co-varies with testis mass and sperm quality across the breeding and non-breeding seasons. For the first time in a seasonal breeder, we found that not only is the Sertoli cell number important in determining testis mass (r = 0.619, p = 0.007 and r = 0.248, p = 0.047 for the Sertoli cell number assessed by histology and cytology, respectively), but also sperm function (r = 0.703, p = 0.002 and r = 0.328, p = 0.012 for the Sertoli cell number assessed by histology and cytology, respectively). Testicular histology also revealed that a high Sertoli cell number per tubular cross-section is associated with high sperm production (r = 0.600, p = 0.009). Sperm production and function were also positively correlated (r = 0.384, p = 0.004), suggesting that these traits co-vary to maximise sperm fertilisation ability in red deer. In conclusion, our findings contribute to the understanding of the dynamics of spermatogenesis, and reveal new insights into the role of testicular function and the Sertoli cell number on testis size and sperm quality in red deer.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to determine whether pre- and post-pubertal young rams on different grazing regimes, resulting in differences in live weight (LW), would show corresponding differences in testicular growth or testicular morphometry that could influence the reproductive traits of these rams upon reaching adulthood. Forty-one spring-born Corriedale rams were reared on either native pasture (low feeding level, Group L, n=22) or improved pasture (higher feeding level, Group H, n=19) from 1 to 7 months of age. Thereafter, half the animals in the native-pasture group were placed on improved pasture and vice versa, thus creating an additional four differential-grazing treatment groups (Groups LL, n=11; LH, n=11; HL, n=10; and HH, n=9). Animals were managed in this way until 18 months of age. Half the animals from each group were then castrated and their testes were subjected to morphometric analysis. The remaining animals (Groups LL, n=6; LH, n=6; HL, n=5; and HH, n=4) were managed together until 30 months of age (from 18 to 27 months on native pastures and from 27 to 30 months of age on improved pastures, at a stocking rate of two to three rams per hectare), whereupon they were also castrated for testicular morphometry. LW and scrotal circumference (SC) were recorded every 60 days. The stereological analysis of testicular parenchyma included counts of elongated spermatids and Sertoli cells. Differences (P<0.001) in LW were observed between feeding levels, even at 30 months of age. Differences (P<0.001) in SC existing at the end of the differential treatment (18 months of age) disappeared (n.s.) soon after. Most differences (P<0.05) in testicular morphometry existing at the end of the differential treatments were no longer significant 1 year later. It is concluded that changes in grazing management during pre- and post-pubertal periods can induce short-lived differences in testicular post-natal growth in Corriedale rams but do not influence testicular morphology or function later in life.  相似文献

Bull calves for fattening are often castrated during the first weeks of life. Because androgens stimulate growth, there is an interest in males that are infertile but exposed to endogenous testicular steroids. Such a situation occurs in cryptorchids and has been imitated by shortening the scrotum to an extent that the testes are located in a near-inguinal position. In this study, effects of partial scrotal resection (SR) and Burdizzo castration (BZ) on endocrine testicular function, testes histology and on weight at slaughter were studied and compared to orchidectomized (OR) and gonad-intact calves (CO; n = 10 per group; age at castration, 54 ± 3 days; fattening period, 474 ± 11 days). Plasma testosterone concentrations were determined repeatedly, and testes were collected for histopathology at slaughter. We hypothesized that SR inhibits spermatogenesis without loss of testicular steroidogenesis. Group SR animals gained more weight than groups OR and BZ (P < 0.01). Plasma testosterone concentration increased in groups SR and CO (P < 0.01 vs. BZ and OR). Histologically, in all SR animals, testicular and epididymal tissue was identified with a seminiferous epithelium of up to three-cell layers in two animals. Germ cells including elongated spermatids were present in three animals. Shortening of the scrotum thus induced varying degrees of testicular degeneration but 3/10 animals had to be suspected as fertile. In one BZ animal, spermatids were identified whereas in the remaining BZ animals, testes and epididymides consisted of sclerotic fibrous tissue. Partial SR thus induced a cryptorchid-like status but fertility in individual animals must be assumed.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine if there is a seasonal pattern of sexual activity dependent on food availability in male Creole goats in subtropical Mexico. The study was conducted in the Laguna Region in the State of Coahuila, Mexico (26 degrees N). Male Creole goats (n = 8) were kept in a shed, fed alfalfa ad libitum and given 200 g of concentrate daily throughout the study. Live weight and testicular weight were determined every 2 wk. Sexual behavior and sperm production were determined monthly. Blood samples were obtained weekly to determine testosterone plasma concentrations. All variables were subjected to sinusoidal modeling procedures and showed important seasonal variations (P < 0.0001) with different phase angles for body weight, testicular weight and testosterone plasma concentrations. The nadir of live weight occurred in November and the peak in May. The lowest testicular weight (90 g) and testosterone plasma concentrations (0.1 ng/mL) were observed in January and February, respectively, while the peaks were observed in July and August (145 g and 10 ng/mL, respectively). Ejaculation latency also varied during the study, being low between May and November (96 sec) and reaching a peak in April (183 sec). Minimum number of spermatozoa per ejaculate occurred between February and April (1.4 x 10(9) cells/ejaculate) while the maximum number was observed between May and September (2.8 x 10(9) spermatozoa/ejaculate). Progressive sperm motility was low between January and April (3.04 on average) and high between May and November (about 3.55 on average). The percentage of live spermatozoa diminished between January and April (68% in April) and then increased to values around 80% between May and November. These results lead us to conclude that male Creole goats in Northern Mexico, fed constantly throughout the year, exhibit seasonality in their reproductive activity. Intense sexual activity occurred between May and December.  相似文献

The present study reports the age related changes in the peripheral testosterone levels, testicular and epididymal growth and development and cauda epididymal spermiogram in local pigs of Northeastern India, which attain sexual maturity around 3 months of age. Local boars (n = 20) were castrated at monthly intervals from 2 to 6 months of age (4 boars per month) to study the testicular growth and development and the epididymal spermiogram. Blood samples, collected from local boars (n = 6) at monthly intervals from 2 to 6 months of age, were analyzed for testosterone levels by radioimmunoassay. Compared to Hampshire boars, significantly (P < 0.05) high testosterone levels were observed in the local boars as early as 2 months of age. The mean (± SEM) level of testosterone in the local boars at 2, 3 and 4 months of age was 11.89 ± 1.52, 20.45 ± 1.33 and 20.38 ± 2.0 ngml−1, respectively. Though there was consistently significant (P < 0.05) difference in the body weight between Hampshire and local pigs, the same was not observed in case of testicular weight except at 3 and 6 months of age. In line with the above observation, the testis:body weight ratio (gram testis per kg body weight) was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in the local boars compared to the Hampshire boars at any time of observation, which ranged from 0.8 to 1.0 in case of Hampshire and from 2.3 to 3.0 in local boars. The sperm concentration in the cauda epididymal fluid of local boars at 2, 3 and 6 months of age was 2255 ± 186.6, 3685 ± 103.8 and 4325 ± 146.2 million/ml, respectively and the sperm motility, viability and total abnormality was 73.3, 75.2 and 6.2%, respectively at 3 months of age. Taken together, the testosterone level, testicular growth and development and epididymal spermiogram indicate the trait of early sexual maturity in the local pigs as compared to Hampshire.  相似文献

The African fruit bat, Eidolon helvum Kerr, is known to occur only south of the Sahara where its distribution is localized. At 0°20' N, this bat exhibits seasonal and synchronized breeding the rhythm of which appears to correspond with the two rainfall peaks typical of Uganda. Quite unexpectedly and unprecedently, this bat exhibits delayed implantation lasting about three months. Evidence for this phenomenon comes from the histological examination of the adult female genital tracts which indicate that mating occurs only in April-June, but implanted embryos are only in evidence in October-November. The male sexual cycle corresponds to such a rhythm and shows a maximum testicular weight at the mating time. Births take place in February-March thus giving a gestation period of about four months. Only one young is born at a time and births occur just before the onset of the higher of the two rainfall peaks, presumably creating favourable conditions for the maximum survival of the young bats when weaned.  相似文献

The relationship between antisperm antibodies as determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and the occurrence of alterations in testicular weight and histology was studied following vasectomy in Lewis rats. The effects of vasovasostomy on antisperm antibody levels were also examined. At 1, 3, and 4 months after vasectomy, the mean absorbance values in an ELISA for sera from animals with altered testes was significantly greater than that from animals lacking testicular alterations. However, animals showing positive antisperm antibody responses were represented both in the group with testicular alterations and among those that lacked testicular damage. Levels of antisperm antibody in both vasectomy and vasovasostomy groups significantly exceeded that for sham-operated animals, but the level of antisperm antibodies in vasovasostomized animals with positive responses was similar to vasectomized animals one and four months after reanastomosis. It is suggested that persistence of antisperm antibodies or testicular alterations, or both, may play roles in limiting the restoration of fertility after vasovasostomy.  相似文献

Male golden hamsters underfed for 11-16 weeks showed a 30% decrease in body weight accompanied by significant testicular regression. Pinealectomy did not prevent underfeeding-induced gonadal regression. Resumption of ad-libitum feeding restored body weights to near control levels and permitted testicular redevelopment in animals with previously regressed tests. These data indicate that chronic food restriction can affect the reproductive status of hamsters and that this effect does not depend on an intact pineal gland. Body weight changes may serve as a secondary proximate cue in addition to photoperiod for timing the hamster seasonal breeding cycle.  相似文献
