Data are presented on counts of migratory terns on the Ghana coast over a ten-year period, 1986–1996. Fourteen species of terns were recorded during the period. Influx of terns begins in late August, peaking in September/October, with the highest likelihood of tern occurrence on the Ghana coast recorded in August-November and April-May. Terns fed mostly offshore and used the coastal lagoons as roosting sites, although a few species e.g. Black Tern Chlidonias niger and Little Tern Sterna albifrons, foraged also on the lagoons. Two sites, Songor Lagoon and Densu Delta, regularly held over 50 % of the total count recorded for all sites. A comparison of the day-time counts with dusk roost counts indicate that the day time counts under-represent the total numbers of terns using the Ghana coast. Trends in the populations of the four most abundant tern species: Black Tern, Common Tern Sterna hirundo, Sandwich Tern S. sandvicensis and Royal Tern S. maxima, are analysed; and the implications for conservation of the species are discussed.  相似文献

Background: Coastal ecosystems in Mexico remain understudied in spite of their ecological, economic and conservation value and are being impacted by human activities along the coast. Knowledge on spatial patterns of plant species distribution that helps preserve these fragile ecosystems is crucial.

Aims: We evaluated differences in species richness, species diversity and species dominance patterns in 16 plant communities as well as the degree to which differences were driven by climatic conditions in sandy dunes in Yucatán. We evaluated the importance of invasive species in mediating patterns of species diversity and species dominance patterns.

Results: We found wide variation in plant species richness, species diversity and species dominance patterns among communities that stems from broad climatic differences along dune systems. Invasive plants represent almost one-third of total species richness and seem to be drastically changing the species dominance patterns in these communities.

Conclusions: Regional climatic differences along the Yucatán north coast seems to be a major driver of plant diversity and species composition. Our findings suggest that invasive plants have successfully colonised and spread along the coast over the past 30 years. Even though invasive species do not alter spatial patterns of species diversity, they are becoming more dominant with potential detrimental consequences for native plants.  相似文献

The catshark genus Holohalaelurus Fowler is currently represented by five species distributed off the southern and eastern parts of the African coast. Very few parasitological records exist for any of these five species, representing a significant knowledge gap. We report the first monogenean species from the bathydemersal species Holohalaelurus regani (Gilchrist): a new species of Microbothriidae Price, 1936, Leptomicrobothrium holohalaelure n. sp. from the dorsal skin surface, and a new species of Hexabothriidae Price, 1942 representing a new genus, Scyliorhinocotyle narvaezae n. gen., n. sp., from the gill lamellae. Both monogenean records represent the first for any member of the catshark genus Holohalaelurus. Previously we focused on the identification of monogenean taxa of emerging veterinary importance for public aquaria. We now begin a focused effort to document a generally unexplored monogenean biodiversity from diverse marine habitats off South Africa.

ABSTRACT

The role of carnivorous mammals as seed dispersers of Myrtus communis L. in the Mediterranean environment was studied. Seeds of M. communis were found in faeces of red fox (Vulpes vulpes L.) and carnivores from the genus Martes, at four sites on the Tyrrhenic coast of Southern Italy in the period autumn-winter 1993–1995. All the study sites are covered by Mediterranean shrublands with M. communis as one of the dominant species. Content analysis of fox scats showed that fruits of M. communis constitute a relevant component of the diet of these carnivores, although other food categories were also well represented. Further investigations on the effect of mammal digestion on seed germinability showed that carnivores not only moved the seeds away from the mother plant but also enhanced their germinability. This species was known to be bird- and ant-dispersed and the adaptive implications of a multi-vectorial seed dispersal process is discussed.  相似文献

Plant populations were reintroduced to the coastal dune bar of the Devesa de Albufera from 1988 to 2004; different coastline sections received different species composition and cover. With the aim to detect spatial and temporal variation of floristic diversity, we compared current species composition and cover across the length of the Devesa and across the dune bar with those imposed at the time of restoration. Non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) detected significant differences both across the dune faces and across the coast sections. Differences across the dune faces reflect the sea-inland ecological gradient and resulted from a spatial rearrangement of plant populations: Calystegia soldanella, Achillea maritima and Polygonum maritimum prefer the windward face; Malcolmia littorea and Lagurus ovatus the leeward. Differences across coast sections are related to those at restoration time, with a slow trend towards the homogenization of plant communities. At the current level of anthropic pressure, the plant cover is likely to evolve following the trends pointed out in this research.  相似文献

Jasmonates are important phytohormones involved in both plant developmental processes as well as defense reactions. Many JA-mediated plant defense responses have been studied in model plants using mutants of the jasmonate signaling pathway. However, in plant species where JA-signaling mutants are not accessible, the availability of a tool targeting JA signaling is crucial to investigate jasmonate-dependent processes. Neomycin is a poly-cationic aminoglycoside antibiotic that blocks the release of Ca2+ from internal stores. We examined the inhibitory activities of neomycin on different jasmonate-inducible responses in eight different plant species: Intracellular calcium measurements in Nicotiana tabacum cell culture, Sporamin gene induction in Ipomoea batatas, PDF2.2 gene expression in Triticum aestivum, Nepenthesin protease activity measurement in Nepenthes alata, extrafloral nectar production in Phaseolus lunatus, nectary formation in Populus trichocarpa, terpene accumulation in Picea abies, and secondary metabolite generation in Nicotiana attenuata. We are able to show that neomycin, an easily manageable and commercially available compound, inhibits JA-mediated responses across the plant kingdom.

Gurnards or triglids are medium‐size marine bottom fishes that live in tropical and temperate seas. Four genera (Aspitrigla, Chelidonichthys, Lepidotrigla, Trigla) and eight species are found in the eastern Atlantic. In this study, we report the weight–length relationships for eight species, with 75 specimens of A. cuculus, 45 of C. obscurus, 84 C. gurnardus, 21 C. lucernus, 45 C. lastoviza, 550 L. cavillone, 255 L. dieuzeidei and 40 T. lyra. These triglids were caught by three different methods: crustacean trawl, fish trawl and purse seine off the Algarve coast; all specimens sampled were part of the discards. Samples were obtained from depths ranging between 20 and 540 m, during 27 trips and 86 hauls. To the best knowledge of the authors, this study presents the first reference on weight–length relationships for four fish species from the Algarve coast (southern Portugal).  相似文献

The recent distributional history of two Macquarie Island vascular plant species, Carex trifida, Poa litorosa, and the Heard Island vascular plant, Ranunculus crassipes is examined. C. trifida is known from only one small population on the north west coast of Macquarie Island. Four populations of P. litorosa were first recorded in the 1980s; we believe however, that it was first observed, but misidentified in the 1950s. R. crassipes was first discovered on Heard Island in the late 1980s. We argue that all three species are indigenous and arrived on their respective islands within the last 200 years by natural processes, most likely from warmer neighbouring islands, where these species have more extensive distributions. There have been small-scale changes in distribution of all species, mainly expansion. Further expansion of all three species is expected as a response to warming climate. Feral rabbit grazing is having a confounding negative influence on populations of P. litorosa.  相似文献

Since the 19th century to date, the fungal pathogens have been involved in causing devastating diseases in plants. All types of fungal pathogens have been observed in important agricultural crops that lead to significant pre and postharvest losses. The application of synthetic fungicide against the fungal plant pathogens (FPP) is a traditional management practice but at the same time these fungicides kill other beneficial microbes, insects, animal, and humans and are harmful to environment. The antagonistic microorganism such as bacteria are being used as an alternate strategy to control the FPP. These antagonistic species are cost-effective and eco-friendly in nature. These biocontrol bacteria have a broad mechanism against fungal pathogens present in the phyllosphere and rhizosphere of the plant. The antagonistic bacteria have different strategies against the FPP, by producing siderophore, biofilm, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), through parasitism, antibiosis, competition for limited resources and induce systemic resistance (ISR) in the host plant by activating the immune systems. The commercial bio-products synthesized by the major bacterial species Pseudomonas syringae, Burkholderia cepacia, Streptomyces griseoviridis, Pseudomonas fluorescens and Bacillus subtilis are used to control Fusarium, Pythium, Rhizoctonia, Penicillium, Alternaria, and Geotrichum. The commercial bio-formulations of bacteria act as both antifungal and plant growth regulators. The Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) played a significant role in improving plant health by nitrogen-fixing, phosphorus solubilization, phytohormones production, minimizing soil metal contamination, and by ACC deaminase antifungal activities. Different articles are available on the specific antifungal activity of bacteria in plant diseases. Therefore, this review article has summarized the information on biocontrol activity of bacteria against the FPP and the role of PGPR in plant growth promotion. This review also provided a complete picture of scattered information regarding antifungal activities of bacteria and the role of PGPR.

Summary

One hundred and sixty-two agarics are recorded for Hirta and two from Dùn, two islands situated off the West coast of Scotland in the St. Kilda complex. The agarics are described in relation to the ecological noda proposed by McVean for the higher plant communities of the islands. Omphalina ericetorum and Nolanea staurospora were by far the commonest species: eighttaxa which are not in the New British Check List are recorded from Hirta. An appendix dealing with the taxonomy and nomenclature of the more critical species in the list is given.  相似文献

Aim We investigate the geographical genetic structure of two coastal plant species, Cakile maritima Scop. (Brassicaceae) and Eryngium maritimum L. (Apiaceae), through three sea straits and along one continuous stretch of coast using amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLPs). The two species have a similar ecology in that they grow in sandy habitats, but differ in life‐form (annual vs. perennial) and dispersability of seeds by sea water as inferred from floating experiments. The sea straits differ in their geological history and their modern current systems. The primary goal of our study was to test the hypothesis that sea straits have an influence on the geographical patterns of genetic variation at the population level. Location The areas around the Strait of Gibraltar, the Dardanelles, the Bosporus and the Atlantic coast of western France. Methods For both species we investigated AFLP variation in several populations from each area. Bayesian clustering and diversity and differentiation measures were used to analyse the genetic data. Results In most areas the spatial genetic structure was similar between the two species. They share the presence of distinct genetic gaps along the coast through the Strait of Gibraltar and the Bosporus, and these genetic gaps coincide with the straits. Both species show genetic continuity along the coast of western France. A distinct genetic gap was found through the Dardanelles for C. maritima but not for E. maritimum. Main conclusions The study shows that sea straits have an influence on the geographical patterns of genetic variation. Sea currents are inferred to cause the genetic gap through the Strait of Gibraltar. In the Bosporus and, for C. maritima, through the Dardanelles, the genetic gaps found are explained by the past closure of these two straits as well as by present‐day factors. Simulations indicate that the lower differentiation of C. maritima through the Dardanelles than through the Bosporus cannot be explained by the difference in geological history of these two straits. The difference in seed dispersability between the two species is argued to be responsible for the observation that differentiation among genetic clusters is higher in E. maritimum than in C. maritima where a direct comparison is possible.  相似文献

Some allometric relationships of the Common Jellyfish, Aurelia aurita, a common species along the Turkish Eastern Black Sea coast, were studied in the harbour of Trabzon. Plant species distribution was studied on five reclaimed lands and one intertidal flat (control) on the western coast of Korea. Nineteen soil properties were analyzed. Of these, soil moisture, electrical conductivity, and levels of Na and Cl had the greatest effect on plant distribution. The plant species were divided into four groups, according to the amount of soil moisture found at their habitats.Triglochin maritimum andTypha angustata were found on the wettest sites;Phragmites communis, Carex scabrifolia, Suaeda japonica, Zoysia sinica, andSalicornia herbacea in places with relatively high moisture;Aster tripolium andPhacelurus latifolius in areas with medium levels of moisture; andAtriplex subcordata, Chenopodium virgatum, andTrifolium repens in the driest areas. Seaweeds are a promising biomass resource that contain proteins with high potential for sustainable exploration. Palmaria palmata, one of the main red seaweeds of the Canadian coast, has a high protein content and much interest as an ingredient. Understanding the associations between environmental conditions and P. palmata color and chemical composition is of paramount importance to predict optimum harvesting conditions and thus increase its value. This study investigated the influence of environmental conditions on the composition and color of wild and cultivated P. palmata. Important changes in these parameters were found for P. palmata harvested in the subarctic Canadian transition zone, depending on the harvesting site/month. A marked increase in carbohydrates and decrease in ashes content (up to 2-fold) were observed from June to October, while photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) values have decreased. These associations suggest that wild P. palmata is shade acclimated to the Gulf of Saint Lawrence region. Maximum protein content was found for samples in June and was especially higher for samples from Grande-Rivière. Samples were intensely colored in June, possibly related to the higher protein content found in this month. Although several intricate factors seem to influence color development in this species, data from this study assist harvesting sites and period to maximise dark red color and avoid pigmentation degradation and paleness. In sum, these results may help indicate the best site/period to take commercial advantage of this species and orient future research on the multifactored relationships between environmental factors and macroalgae chemical composition and color.

Studies of geographic distribution and physiological adaptations in theBromeliaceae of coastal Chile and Peru provide insights into the ecological patterns of habit selection and speciation. The hyperarid coastal Atacama and Peruvian Deserts along the Pacific coast of South America contain a surprisingly rich flora of bromeliad species. These include representatives of all threeBromeliaceae subfamilies: two terrestrialBromelioideae and two terrestialPitcairnioideae, all with rooted growth morphologies, and 14 species ofTillandsioideae (allTillandsia) with epiphytic and unrooted, terrestraial representatives. TheBromelioideae are represented by two species ofPuya Molina, one each in Peru and Chile. ThePitcairnioideae are represented by two genera,Deuterocohnia andPitcairnia, with one species each. The 14Tillandsia species are distributed in five subgenera which have successfully invaded the coastal deserts, and include both widespread and local endemics with xeromorphic adaptations. All theTillandsia species are epiphytic in the broad sense, but in addition to growing on plants, they are found growing on rocks (i.e. saxicolous or epilithic). Six species (T. purpurea, T. latifolia, T. capillaris, T. marconae, T. werdermanii, andT. landbeckii) have evolved a highly specialized substrate ecology where they grow essentially unrooted on sand (i.e. epiarenic). Nowhere in the world are bromeliads more dominant or have more biomass than in these coastal species growing on sand. Many of these species grow at the absolute limits of vascular plant tolerance, with the entire community consisting of a singleTillandsia species. Rooted, terrestrial bromeliads in the coastal lomas formations (allPitcairnioideae) include CAM, C3, and C3-CAM flexible taxa in their metabolic systems, the CAM species growing in the most arid sites along the coast and C3 species growing in the most mesic habitats within the center of the coastal fog belt where fog moisture input is highest. All of the epiphyticTillandsia species of the coastal desert region utilize CAM metabolism entirely or in part. At least two species,T. latifolia andT. tragophoba, utilize a flexible C3-CAM mode of carbon fixation. Whereas most of the desert-inhabitingTillandsia species have relatively narrow leaves covered by water absorbing trichomes on their surface,T. multiflora in northern Peru andT. tragophoba in northern Chile are tank-forming species where the bases of the leaves form a water-containing reservoir. The occurrence of the latter as a local endemic in hyperarid northern Chile is remarkable since it occurs thousands of kilometers south of its closest potential relatives in the central Andes.  相似文献
