Almost all of the themes contained in E.O.Wilson's sociobiological writing on war and human aggression were prefigured in Anglo-American bio-social discourse, c. 1880–1919. Instinct theory – stemming from animal psychology and the genetics revolution – encouraged the belief that pugnacity had been programmed into the ancient part of the human brain as a result of evolutionary pressures dating from prehistory. War was seen to be instinct-driven, and genocidal fighting postulated as a eugenic force in early human evolution. War was explained in distinctly modern sociobiological terms as adaptive behaviour springing from territorial urges, crowding, competition for resources and reproductive advantage, ethnocentrism and pseudo-speciation.  相似文献

Questionnaires of birth dates of family members (13 404 families in total) were analyzed in order to examine the effects of delivery season of a baby on the subsequent birth interval. Deliveries at maternal age of 20–34 years were used. In 1921–1935, the mothers who had been delivered of a baby in August–October showed the shortest (30.62 months geometric mean) and those in February–April the longest (34.05 months) non-last intervals, with a highly significant difference among the four delivery seasons (P<0.001, Kruskal-Wallis test,n=5678). Although the intervals were abruptly prolonged just before the last birth, the above difference was also consistent in the last intervals. When seasonal distributions of last and non-last births were compared, last births tended to be concentrated in the summer half of a year (P<0.05) in 1921–1935. In 1951–1965, overall geometric mean of the interval shortened to 28.44 months, and the length of intervals did not differ appreciably according to the season of preceding delivery. Deliveries in late summer (August–October) in 1921–1935, therefore, were associated with increased risk of termination of reproduction, on one hand, but a lowered chance of prolongation of the subsequent interval, on the other hand. Possible environmental factors are discussed to explain this apparently paradoxical phenomenon.  相似文献

This paper assesses ideas about moral andreproductive duty in American eugenics duringthe early twentieth century. While extremeeugenicists, including Charles Davenport andPaul Popenoe, argued that social leaders andbiologists must work to prevent individuals whowere ``unfit' from reproducing, moderates, especially Edwin G. Conklin, presented adifferent view. Although he was sympathetic toeugenic goals and participated in eugenicorganizations throughout his life, Conklinrealized that eugenic ideas rarely could meetstrict scientific standards of proof. Withthis in mind, he did not restrict his eugenicvision to hereditary measures. Relying onhis experience as an embryologist, Conklininstead attempted to balance more extremeeugenic claims – that emphasized the absolutelimits posed by heredity – with his own view of``the possibilities of development.' Throughhis critique he argued that most human beingsnever even begin to approach their hereditarypotential; he moderated his own eugenicrhetoric so that it preserved individualopportunity and responsibility, or what hasoften been labeled the American Dream.  相似文献

Dr. Leon E. Rosenberg delivered the following presentation as the Grover Powers Lecturer on May 14, 2014, which served as the focal point of his return to his “adult home” as a Visiting Professor in the Department of Pediatrics. Grover F. Powers, MD, was one of the most influential figures in American Pediatrics and certainly the leader who created the modern Department of Pediatrics at Yale when he was recruited in 1921 from Johns Hopkins and then served as its second chairman from 1927 to 1951. Dr. Powers was an astute clinician and compassionate physician and fostered and shaped the careers of countless professors, chairs, and outstanding pediatricians throughout the country. This lectureship has continued yearly since it first honored Dr. Powers in 1956. The selection of Dr. Rosenberg for this honor recognizes his seminal role at Yale and throughout the world in the fostering and cultivating of the field of human genetics. Dr. Rosenberg served as the inaugural Chief of a joint Division of Medical Genetics in the Departments of Pediatrics and Internal Medicine; he became Chair when this attained Departmental status. Then he served as Dean of the Medical School from 1984 to 1991, before he became President of the Pharmaceutical Research Institute at Bristol-Myers Squibb and later Senior Molecular Biologist and Professor at Princeton University, until his recent retirement. Dr. Rosenberg has received numerous honors that include the Borden Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the McKusick Leadership Award from the American Society for Human Genetics, and election to the Institute of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences.  相似文献

Methods to provide accurate accumulation rates for lake models are discussed. Cores were taken in 1979 in two basins of Lake Lucerne, Switzerland, and accumulation rates were calculated by using Pb-210 dating and by a natural landslide marker of 1795 in one basin (Weggis). In the other basin (Horw Bay) the sediment accumulation rates based on the lead method were compared with yearly sedimentation rates measured by sediment traps in 1969/70. At the Weggis station, the core dating yielded sediment accumulation rates of about 400 g dry wt. m–2 y–1 with the lead method, averaged over a sediment depth of 4–20 cm; accumulation was about 700 g dry wt. m–2 y–1 with the marker method, averaged over 0–33 cm. In Horw Bay, the trap method yielded about 1300 g dry wt. M–2 y–1 compared with 400–1000 g dry wt. m–2 y–1 obtained with the lead method and related to various depth intervals. The characteristic sources of error of the three methods as well as several hypotheses for these discrepancies are discussed.  相似文献

Methylprednisolone sodium succinate (MPSS) for treatment of acute spinal cord injury (SCI) has been associated with both benefits and adverse events. MPSS administration was the standard of care for acute SCI until recently when its use has become controversial. Patients with SCI have had little input in the debate, thus we sought to learn their opinions regarding administration of MPSS. A summary of the published literature to date on MPSS use for acute SCI was created and adjudicated by 28 SCI experts. This summary was then emailed to 384 chronic SCI patients along with a survey that interrogated the patients’ neurological deficits, communication with physicians and their views on MPSS administration. 77 out of 384 patients completed the survey. 28 respondents indicated being able to speak early after injury and of these 24 reported arriving at the hospital within 8 hours of injury. One recalled a physician speaking to them about MPSS and one patient reported choosing whether or not to receive MPSS. 59.4% felt that the small neurological benefits associated with MPSS were ‘very important’ to them (p<0.0001). Patients had ‘little concern’ for potential side-effects of MPSS (p = 0.001). Only 1.4% felt that MPSS should not be given to SCI patients regardless of degree of injury (p<0.0001). This is the first study to report SCI patients’ preferences regarding MPSS treatment for acute SCI. Patients favor the administration of MPSS for acute SCI, however few had input into whether or not it was administered. Conscious patients should be given greater opportunity to decide their treatment. These results also provide some guidance regarding MPSS administration in patients unable to communicate.  相似文献

At the crossroads between Africa and Eurasia, Arabia is necessarily a melting pot, its peoples enriched by successive gene flow over the generations. Estimating the timing and impact of these multiple migrations are important steps in reconstructing the key demographic events in the human history. However, current methods based on genome-wide information identify admixture events inefficiently, tending to estimate only the more recent ages, as here in the case of admixture events across the Red Sea (∼8–37 generations for African input into Arabia, and 30–90 generations for “back-to-Africa” migrations). An mtDNA-based founder analysis, corroborated by detailed analysis of the whole-mtDNA genome, affords an alternative means by which to identify, date and quantify multiple migration events at greater time depths, across the full range of modern human history, albeit for the maternal line of descent only. In Arabia, this approach enables us to infer several major pulses of dispersal between the Near East and Arabia, most likely via the Gulf corridor. Although some relict lineages survive in Arabia from the time of the out-of-Africa dispersal, 60 ka, the major episodes in the peopling of the Peninsula took place from north to south in the Late Glacial and, to a lesser extent, the immediate post-glacial/Neolithic. Exchanges across the Red Sea were mainly due to the Arab slave trade and maritime dominance (from ∼2.5 ka to very recent times), but had already begun by the early Holocene, fuelled by the establishment of maritime networks since ∼8 ka. The main “back-to-Africa” migrations, again undetected by genome-wide dating analyses, occurred in the Late Glacial period for introductions into eastern Africa, whilst the Neolithic was more significant for migrations towards North Africa.  相似文献

Rates of DNA Duplication and Mitochondrial DNA Insertion in the Human Genome   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
The hundreds of mitochondrial pseudogenes in the human nuclear genome sequence (numts) constitute an excellent system for studying and dating DNA duplications and insertions. These pseudogenes are associated with many complete mitochondrial genome sequences and through those with a good fossil record. By comparing individual numts with primate and other mammalian mitochondrial genome sequences, we estimate that these numts arose continuously over the last 58 million years. Our pairwise comparisons between numts suggest that most human numts arose from different mitochondrial insertion events and not by DNA duplication within the nuclear genome. The nuclear genome appears to accumulate mtDNA insertions at a rate high enough to predict within-population polymorphism for the presence/absence of many recent mtDNA insertions. Pairwise analysis of numts and their flanking DNA produces an estimate for the DNA duplication rate in humans of 2.2 × 10–9 per numt per year. Thus, a nucleotide site is about as likely to be involved in a duplication event as it is to change by point substitution. This estimate of the rate of DNA duplication of noncoding DNA is based on sequences that are not in duplication hotspots, and is close to the rate reported for functional genes in other species.  相似文献

The semiarid regions of northwestern Venezuela have extremely low and highly unpredictable precipitation, yet these conditions support species with contrasting phenology and leaf longevity. Episodic rains significantly increased leaf water potential (from –5 to –2.5 MPa) in several species and, in some cases, triggered flowering, leading us to hypothesize that the coexistence of species with contrasting phenology is due to differences in their ability to utilize small rainfall events. Irrigation treatments were used to simulate brief rainfall events, and the response of three species (Erythrina velutina [deciduous], Croton heliaster [semideciduous], and Capparis odoratissima [evergreen]) was monitored over a period of 14 months. To partition the effects of water reaching the canopy versus the soil, irrigation was supplied either in the form of mist to the canopy or by minisprinklers near the base of the trees. Nonirrigated trees were used as controls. Productivity (estimated as aboveground litter production) and water potential were enhanced by soil irrigation in two species. However, in the evergreen species canopy irrigation had a greater effect on water relations and productivity than soil irrigation, as indicated by higher predawn water potential, higher total annual flower (40 g m–2 year–1) and fruit (5 g m–2 year–1) production, and longer leaf longevity (410 days in control trees versus 520 days in canopy-irrigated trees). Canopy irrigation augmented flower and fruit production in all three species. Our findings suggest that reproductive phenology in these species is driven by episodic rains and that evergreen species may sustain productivity by their ability to make use of water deposited on leaf surfaces.  相似文献

Summary The effects have been analyzed of cytochalasin B and colchicine on the secretion of glycoconjugates by human bronchial expiants labeled in vitro with radioactive glucosamine. Both cytochalasin B and colchicine had no effect on baseline 14C-labeled glycoconjugate release but caused a dose-dependent (10–7–10–4 M) inhibition of 14C-glycoconjugate release and discharge of labeled macromolecules from mucous and serous cells induced by 5 · 10–5 M methacholine.Quantitative autoradiographic analyses showed that neither cytochalasin B nor colchicine inhibited 3H-threonine or 3H-glucosamine incorporation into mucous and serous cells of the submucosal glands or goblet cells of the airway epithelium. Colchicine (10–5 M) but not cytochalasin B significantly reduced the rate at which labeled macromolecules were transported through mucous, serous and goblet cells but this effect was not observed until 4 h after the addition of colchicine. Neither cytochalasin B nor colchicine affected the basal rate of labeled-macromolecule discharge from mucous, serous or goblet cells. At a concentration of 10–5 M, both agents completely inhibited the increase in labeled-macromolecule discharge induced in mucous and serous cells by methacholine. Our results suggest that in the submucosal gland of human airways microtubules and microfilaments may be important in secretagogue-induced but not in baseline cellular glycoconjugate discharge, implying that the mechanisms of the two processes differ significantly. Furthermore, a role for microtubules is suggested in the transport of secretory granules through mucous, serous and goblet cells.Supported by National Institutes of Health Research Grant 5R01HL22444. This paper reviews the achievements of Abbott Handerson Thayer (1849–1921), an American painter and naturalist whose pioneering writings on animal camouflage addressed shared concerns among artists, zoologists and military tacticians. It discusses his beliefs about camouflage (both natural and military) in the context of his training as an artist, with particular emphasis on three of his major ideas: countershading, ruptive (or disruptive) coloration and background picturing.  相似文献

A bitter controversy had existed as to the minimum number of quanta required for the evolution of one molecule of oxygen in photosynthesis: Otto Warburg had insisted since 1923 that this value was 3–4, whereas Robert Emerson and others continued to obtain a value of 8–12 since the 1940s. It is shown in this letter that the 1931 Nobel-laureate of Physiology & Medicine Otto Warburg published, in his last and final paper, just before his death in 1970, a measured minimum quantum requirement of oxygen evolution of 12 at the lowest intensities of light he used. Although using his theory on photolyte, Warburg calculated a value of 3–4 for the quantum requirement, this is the first confirmation by Warburg of the higher measured quantum requirement. However, it has remained unknown to most investigators. It is expected that this information will be of general interest not only to those interested in the history and research on photosynthesis, but to the entire sci entific community, especially the writers of text books in biology, biochemistry and biophysics.  相似文献

Conclusion The major tenets of the recent hypothesis of punctuated equilibrium are explicit in Darwin's writing. His notes from 1837–1838 contain references to stasis and rapid change. In the first edition of the Origin (1859), Darwin described the importance of isolation of local varieties in the process of speciation. His views on the tempo of speciation were influenced by Hugh Falconer and also, perhaps, by Edward Suess (1831–1914). It is paradoxical that, although both topics were recorded in his unpublished notes of 1837–1838, the second was not explicitly and fully discussed until the fourth edition of the Origin (1866). While no wholly satisfactory explanation of this paradox suggests itself, it seems probable that Falconer's work on the persistence of fossil species of elephant helped Darwin to see the wider significance of the tempo of evolution for his general theory.  相似文献

Palynological investigation and radiocarbon dating of a 6-m core from lake Durankulak, north-eastern Bulgaria, enables vegetation development and human occupation from ca. 5500–5300 cal. B.C. onwards to be traced. Steppe vegetation that included with groves of deciduous trees asQuercus, Ulmus, Carpinus belulus andCorylus changed to a forest-steppe after 4000 cal. B.C. The archaeopalynological record indicates three distinct phases of human activity as follows: (1) 5300–4200 cal. B.C. (late Neolithic and Eneolithic) during which farming, that included a substantial arable component, was pursued, (2) 3500–3000 cal. B.C. (transition to early Bronze Age) when stock rearing appears to have dominated, and (3) after 1300 cal. B.C. (late Bronze Age) when arable farming again assumed importance. The palynological data correlate well with the rich archaeological record for human settlement that is available for the region from late Neolithic times onwards.  相似文献

Over years of friendly meetings with Professor Aharon Katzir-Katchalsky, many topics of mutual interest were discussed. He was the ideal person to come to with a problem. After being subjected to his critical, analytic mind, most research problems seemed simple, more clearly defined and understandable. His broad biologic and scientific background grew from an apparently insatiable interest in all natural phenomena. He generously shared his knowledge and imparted his wisdom with a share of his own infectious excitement. He was quick to sense the significance of understanding of biological processes to their practical application. For this reason it seems appropriate to relate the progress made in the understanding of cell volume regulation, which had been discussed on several occasions with him, to its possible significance as a factor in disease processes.Dr. Frega is a Fellow of the National Kidney Foundation, Inc., 1972–73.  相似文献

Sewall Wright first encountered the complex systems characteristic of gene combinations while a graduate student at Harvard’s Bussey Institute from 1912 to 1915. In Mendelian breeding experiments, Wright observed a hierarchical dependence of the organism’s phenotype on dynamic networks of genetic interaction and organization. An animal’s physical traits, and thus its autonomy from surrounding environmental constraints, depended greatly on how genes behaved in certain combinations. Wright recognized that while genes are the material determinants of the animal phenotype, operating with great regularity, the special nature of genetic systems contributes to the animal phenotype a degree of spontaneity and novelty, creating unpredictable trait variations by virtue of gene interactions. As a result of his experimentation, as well as his keen interest in the philosophical literature of his day, Wright was inspired to see genetic systems as conscious, living organisms in their own right. Moreover, he decided that since genetic systems maintain ordered stability and cause unpredictable novelty in their organic wholes (the animal phenotype), it would be necessary for biologists to integrate techniques for studying causally ordered phenomena (experimental method) and chance phenomena (correlation method). From 1914 to 1921 Wright developed his “method of path coefficient” (or “path analysis”), a new procedure drawing from both laboratory experimentation and statistical correlation in order to analyze the relative influence of specific genetic interactions on phenotype variation. In this paper I aim to show how Wright’s philosophy for understanding complex genetic systems (panpsychic organicism) logically motivated his 1914–1921 design of path analysis.  相似文献

It was with great sorrow that we have learned of the untimely death of our friend, mentor, collaborator, and hero, Dan Tawfik. Danny was a true legend in the field of protein function and evolution. He had an incredibly creative mind and a breadth of knowledge—his interests spanned chemistry and engineering to genetics and evolution—that allowed him to see connections that the rest of us could not. More importantly, he made solving biochemical mysteries fun: He was passionate about his work, and his face lit up with joy whenever he talked about scientific topics that excited him (of which there were a lot). Conversations with Danny made us all smarter by osmosis.Danny’s own evolution in science began with physical organic chemistry and biochemistry. His PhD at the Weizmann Institute of Science, awarded in 1995, was on catalytic antibodies under the supervision of Zelig Eshhar and Michael Sela. It was followed by a highly productive period at the University of Cambridge’s Centre for Protein Engineering, first as a postdoctoral fellow with Alan Fersht and Tony Kirby, and then as a senior researcher. Among his many achievements during his time in Cambridge was the demonstration that off‐the‐shelf proteins—the serum albumins—could rival the best catalytic antibodies in accelerating the Kemp elimination reaction due to non‐specific medium effects. This work was an early example of unexpected catalytic promiscuity, and it sowed the seed for Danny’s later fascination with “esoteric, niche enzymology” that went far beyond convenient model systems. It was also in Cambridge where Danny first realized the power of the then new field of directed evolution, both for biotechnology and for elucidating evolutionary processes. He and Andrew Griffiths pioneered emulsion‐based in vitro compartmentalization. The idea of controlling biochemical reactions in separate aqueous droplets inspired emulsion PCR and next‐generation sequencing technologies, whereas Danny used it to solve a long‐standing problem in directed evolution; in vitro selection techniques had always been good at identifying ligand‐binding proteins, but compartmentalization finally enabled the directed evolution of ultra‐fast catalysts.Danny returned to Israel in 2001 to join the faculty of the Weizmann Institute of Science where his scientific trajectory further evolved, diverged, and even “drifted”. He developed new methods for enzyme engineering and applied his evolutionary insights into de novo protein design efforts. In this context, Danny’s interest was always focused on how proteins evolve, particularly the connection between promiscuity, conformational diversity, and evolvability. His depth of understanding underpinned both applied research, such as engineering enzymes to detoxify nerve agents, and fundamental research, such as the evolution of enzymes from non‐catalytic scaffolds.Through it all, Danny retained his sense of joy and wonder at the “beautiful aspects of Nature’s chemistry”. This includes his discovery of an exquisite molecular specificity mechanism mediated by a single, short H‐bond that enables microbes to scavenge phosphate in arsenate‐rich environments. In recent years, he deciphered the biosynthetic mechanism of dimethyl sulfide, “the smell of the sea”, and homed in on the interplay between the evolution of an enzyme, its host organism, and environmental complexity. His insights into how the first proteins emerged caused tremendous excitement in the field. He established the roots of two common enzyme lineages, the Rossmann and P‐loop NTPases, as simple polypeptides, and suggested ornithine as the first cationic amino acid. Prior to his death, he published the results of another tour de force: evidence that the first organisms to utilize oxygen may have appeared much earlier than thought. His work impacted many research fields, and he won many significant awards. Most recently, Danny was awarded the EMET Prize for Art, Science and Culture (2020), informally dubbed “Israel’s Nobel Prize”. He was an active and valued member of the EMBO community, having been elected in 2009, and, until his passing, served on the Editorial Advisory Board of EMBO Reports.Danny was also a superb science communicator. Both his research articles and reviews are a joy to read. What stood out just as much as his brilliance was his personality, as he embodied the Yiddish concept of being a true “mensch”. Danny was humble, was down‐to‐earth, and treated all his colleagues—including the most junior members of our research teams—as equals. He championed the careers of others, both those who worked directly for him and those who were lucky enough to be “just” his friends and collaborators. He believed in us even when we did not believe in ourselves, and he was always there to answer questions both scientific and professional. While he loved to share his own ideas, he would be just as excited about ours. Despite his own busy schedule, he always found the time to help others. He was also excellent company, with a great, very dry, sense of humor, and endless interesting stories, including from his own colorful life. In the days after his untimely death, an often‐repeated phrase was “he was my best friend”. Danny’s former group members have gone on to be highly successful in both industry and academia, including more than 15 former doctoral and postdoctoral researchers who are now faculty. The network of researchers Danny has trained, mentored, or influenced is broad, and this legacy is testament to his qualities as both a scientist and a person.Danny was born in Jerusalem to an Iraqi Jewish family, and his Arabic Jewish identity was important to him. He believed strongly in coexistence and peace, and very much valued the Arabic part of his heritage. In his own words: “I am an Israeli, a Jew, an Arab, but first and foremost a human being”. He would often speak of the achievements of his children with immense pride. Danny also had a passion for being outdoors, especially climbing and hiking—when the best discussions were often to be had (Fig (Fig1).1). One of the easiest ways to persuade him to come for a seminar, a collaborative visit, or a conference was to have access to high‐quality climbing in the area. He passed away in a tragic rock‐climbing accident, doing what he loved most outside of science. Our thoughts are with his partner Ita and his children, and we join the much broader community of friends, collaborators, and colleagues whose hearts are broken by his sudden loss.Open in a separate windowFigure 1Dan Salah Tawfik (1955–2021)Photo courtesy of Prof. Joel Mackay, The University of Sydney.  相似文献
