Fossil record of Early Cretaceous birds may be geographically biased, and eggs and eggshells predating the Late Cretaceous were unknown. Here, we report the oldest known bird eggshell (FPDM-V-0009175) collected from the upper Barremian Kitadani Formation in Katsuyama City, Fukui, Japan. The Kitadani Formation likely represents fluvial environments. Thin-section and scanning electron microscope analyses revealed diagnostic characters of FPDM-V-0009175, including thin (0.44 mm) shell, smooth external surface, non-branching and narrow pore canals with relatively constant width, three structural layers, oblique crystal orientation from vertical in the external layer, and mammillary to continuous to external layer thickness ratio of 1:1:0.44. These characters allow assignment of FPDM-V-0009175 to a new oogenus and oospecies, Plagioolithus fukuiensis, and suggest it belonging to a bird. The three-layered eggshell structure is seen in extant and extinct birds, Plagioolithus fukuiensis, and non-avian theropods. Therefore, such structure may be plesiomorphic among theropods, appearing in the late Barremian or earlier. As the first bird body fossil from the Mesozoic of Japan, Plagioohlithus fukuiensis suggests extensive distribution and abundance of birds in the Barremian East Asia. Plagioolithus fukuiensis indicates that the late-Barremian birds inhabited and reproduced in the fluvial environments within a basin located along the eastern margin of the Asian continent. http://www.zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:90A8CCE8-57F7-473C-855C-B2CCE2BBD1A2 相似文献

In this paper, a revision of tracks referred to as Chelichnus tazelwürmi is reported. The performed analysis, consisting of a holistic approach by means of a mainly morphological analysis, and a secondarily functional one, led to the proposal of a new ichnogenus, named as Contiichnus tazelwurmi. The three dimensional morphology of the tracks allows for the inference of a complex cycle of locomotion by the trackmakers. The tracks were formed in the main phases (i.e. touch-down, weight-bearing and kick-off) by different axes of body load and transference, indicating that the whole fore autopod was involved in the cycle of locomotion and actively contacted the substrate, while for the hind autopod the functional prevalence was markedly centro-medial. Some track features suggest a therapsid-grade synapsid as potential trackmaker. However, the reconstructed autopodial structure does not correlate with known autopods from the Late Permian body fossil record. These observations stress the importance of tetrapod ichnology studies in improving knowledge in the field of vertebrate palaeontology. http://www.zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:B4EB4D42-1A3B-48EC-B83F-6942F741AF30 http://www.zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:B4EB4D42-1A3B-48EC-B83F-6942F741AF30 相似文献

In this study, a species catalogue of Sermyloides, including 42 species, is given. Two new species are described: Sermyloides wuyiensis sp. nov. from Fujian, China and Sermyloides bipunctatus sp. nov. from Chongqing, China. A key to species, photographs of aedeagus, habitus of new species and habitus of 14 species of Chinese holotypes are provided.www.zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:820BDA9F-633B-49D8-B5F0-45610E622C9A. 相似文献

AbstractWe report a new dimylid species, Plesiodimylus ilercavonicus sp. nov., from the Early Miocene locality of Mas d’Antolino B-5 (Ribesalbes-Alcora, Castelló, Spain). This new species of Plesiodimylus is an amblyodont form of the genus and exhibits some primitive characters. The phylogenetic and palaeoenvironmental implications of this southern occurrence of Plesiodimylus in Lower Miocene sediments are discussed. http://zoobank.org/lsid:zoobank.org:pub:E78DB979-6552-4BE2-BEC9-FA2EA05B7B39 相似文献

A new species of the dipteran family Sciomyzidae is described from Iran: Limnia kassebeeri sp. n., which is similar to L. unguicornis (Scopoli, 1763) and L. paludicola Elberg, 1965, but differs from them by the reticulate pattern on the anal cell, the presence of one small seta on the anepisternum, in addition to fine hairs and the features of the genitalia. http://www.zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:FCD0AD91-E21D-44CA-9D11-90DE5A92F52D 相似文献

Amber inclusions of fully aquatic animals are rare, most of them isolated specimens of water-bound insect larvae. In contrast, we here describe an ample, speciose fauna of 262 fully aquatic individuals of Ostracoda (Crustacea) from Mexican amber of Early Miocene age. This fauna was trapped whilst under water swimming around trunks of resin-producing trees in a brackish lagoon. Ostracod crustaceans are typically around a millimeter in length, and are known for their mostly well-calcified bivalved carapaces that account for their unparalleled fossil record in arthropods. However, in the Chiapas amber we found representatives of the tribe Thalassocypridini, which are characterised by lightly calcified carapaces and therefore lack a substantial fossil record. Embedded in amber, this ‘drawback’ becomes a clear benefit because the unobstructed view onto the appendages otherwise hidden in the carapace allowed us to identify nine ostracod species, six of them new to science. The exceptional number of individuals permitted insights into population composition, reproduction, taphonomy and into micro-environmental parameters of the amber’s place of formation. Based on ecological data available for Recent Thalassocypridini species, we posit that this tribe reached a peak radiation in open lagoonal settings during the Miocene, and shifted towards anchialine environments by the Recent. http://zoobank.org/lsid:zoobank.org:pub:3C93A06B-F86B-404F-985D-139897F97EF3 相似文献

As the first taxonomic and faunistic report of Nanomis Lugo-Ortiz and McCafferty, 1999 for Venezuela, we describe a new species, N. rasmusseni sp. n., based on material from Andean streams. Comparisons of the nymphal and imaginal stages of N. rasmusseni with those of N. galera Lugo-Ortiz and McCafferty, 1999 – the only species currently known for this genus – are done in detail. Further, additional morphological characters are discussed to delineate the genus from the other baetid genera. Likewise, ecological data and distribution of N. rasmusseni in the Andean highlands of Venezuela are provided, which improves knowledge of the richness and distribution of the genus in South America. http://www.zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:C9DF3936-101F-4240-B067-AC5DF394C805 相似文献
