[Purpose]We determined the effect of partial sleep deprivation (PSD) after an exercise session on exercise performance on the following morning.[Methods]Eleven male athletes performed either a normal sleep trial (CON) or a PSD trial. On the first day (day 1), all subjects performed an exercise session consisting of 90 min of running (at 75% V˙O2max) followed by 100 drop jumps. Maximal strength (MVC) was evaluated before and after exercise. In the CON trial, the sleep duration was 23:00–7:00, while in the PSD trial, the sleep duration was shortened to 40% of the regular sleep duration. On the following morning (day 2), MVC, the metabolic responses during 20 min of running (at 75% V˙O2max), and time to exhaustion (TTE) at 85% V˙O2max were evaluated.[Results]On day 2, neither the MVC nor  V˙O2 during 20 min of running differed significantly between the two trials. However, the respiratory exchange ratio was significantly lower in the PSD trial than in the CON trial (p = 0.01). Moreover, the TTE was significantly shorter in the PSD trial than in the CON trial (p = 0.01).[Conclusion]A single night of PSD after an exercise session significantly decreased endurance performance without significantly changing muscle strength or cardiopulmonary response.  相似文献

The extent to which the diurnal fluctuations of different cognitive processes could be affected by sleep loss may be explored to predict performance decrements observed in the real world. Twenty healthy male subjects voluntarily took part in 8 test sessions at 06:00, 10:00, 14:00, and 18:00 h, following either a night with or without sleep in random order. Measurements included oral temperature, simple reaction time, sign cancelation, Go/NoGo, and the Purdue pegboard test. The results indicate that simple reaction time and motor coordination had morning–afternoon variations closely following the rhythms of temperature and vigilance. Inhibitory attention (Go/NoGo) presented no morning–afternoon variations. Sleep deprivation may affect the profiles of cognitive performance depending on the processes solicited. Sustained and inhibitory attention are particularly affected in the morning (after 24 and 28 waking hours), while a complex task (visuo-motor coordination) would be affected after 32 waking hours only.  相似文献

The present purpose was to examine how sleep deprivation affects the estrous cycle of the female rat. Paradoxical sleep-deprived (PSD) adult female Wistar rats were compared to home-cage control (CTRL) on their estrous cyclicity. Forty-four PSD and forty-four CTRL female rats were distributed into 4 subgroups of 11 animals each according to the phase of estrous cycle and were subjected to sleep deprivation for 96 h by the multiple platform technique. After PSD period, vaginal estrous cycles were taken for an additional 9 days. Animals that were submitted to PSD in diestrus phase (PSD-diestrus) had their estrous cycles disrupted during the recovery period by showing a constant diestrus during the first week. As for hormone alterations, progesterone concentrations were statistically higher in PSD-diestrus compared to respective phase control and to PSD-proestrus and PSD-estrus rats while CTRL-metestrus had higher levels than CTRL-proestrus and estrus groups. Testosterone was significantly decreased in PSD-estrus in relation to PSD-proestrus and PSD-diestrus groups and was lower in CTRL-diestrus rats than in home-cage rats in proestrus. In addition, PSD-diestrus phase exhibited higher concentrations of corticosterone and lower estrogen than the respective control rats. These data indicate that PSD may modulate the ovarian hormone release through alterations in hormonal-neurochemical mechanisms.  相似文献

To asses the influence of photoperiod on sleep regulation EEG, EMG, and cortical temperature were continuously recorded for two baseline days and after 4 h sleep deprivation in Djungarian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus) adapted to a short photoperiod (light dark 816). Comparison to previous data collected in a long photoperiod (lightdark 168) showed several major effects of photoperiod: 1. A prominent change in the 24-h distribution, duration and number of vigilance state episodes, whereas the total amount of sleep and waking was unchanged; 2. Cortical temperature was 0.7°C lower in the short photoperiod; 3. There was a significant negative correlation between cortical temperature and the frequency of REM sleep episodes; and 4. Absolute EEG power density showed a marked reduction in the short photoperiod. After sleep deprivation EEG slow-wave activity (mean power density 0.75–4.0 Hz) in NREM sleep showed a remarkably similar increase in both photoperiods demonstrating the robustness of the homeostatic regulation of sleep. Cortical temperature remained above baseline values after sleep deprivation in the short photoperiod whereas a negative rebound was present in the long photoperiod. Our results support the hypothesis that cortical temperature has a strong influence on REM sleep propensity and indicate the possibility of an optimum cortical temperature for recovery sleep after sleep deprivation. The lower EEG power density in the short photoperiod may contribute to energy conservation.Abbreviations LP long photoperiod - NREM non-rapid-eye-movement - REM rapid-eye-movement - SCN suprachiasmatic nucleus - SD sleep deprivation - SP short photoperiod - SWA slow-wave activity - T CRT cortical temperature  相似文献

BackgroundSocial networking sites are widely used by university students. This study investigated the purposes for which social networking sites are used and their effects on learning, social interaction, and sleep duration.Material and methodsA cross-sectional study was conducted among 300, 17–29-year-old female students at Prince Sattam bin Abdul Aziz University. A questionnaire was used to collect data. Chi-squared (Fisher’s exact test) test was used to analyze the data.ResultsThe results showed that 97% of the students used social media applications. Only 1% of them used social media for academic purposes. Whereas 35% of them used these platforms to chat with others, 43% of them browsed these sites to pass time. Moreover, 57% of them were addicted to social media. Additionally, 52% of them reported that social media use had affected their learning activities, 66% of them felt more drawn toward social media than toward academic activities, and 74% of them spent their free time on social media platforms. The most popular applications (i.e., based on usage) were Snapchat (45%), Instagram (22%), Twitter (18%), and WhatsApp (7%). Further, 46% and 39% of them reported going to bed between 11 pm and 12 am and between 1 am and 2 am, respectively. Finally, 68% of them attributed their delayed bedtime to social media use, and 59% of them reported that social media had affected their social interactions.ConclusionsA majority of the participants reported prolonged use of social networking sites for nonacademic purposes. These habitual behaviors can distract students from their academic work, adversely affect their academic performance, social interactions, and sleep duration, and lead to a sedentary lifestyle and physical inactivity, which in turn can render them vulnerable to non-communicable diseases and mental health problems.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Research indicates that sleep duration and quality are inter-related factors that contribute to obesity, but few studies have focused on sleep chronotype, representing an individual’s circadian proclivity, nor assessed these factors in racially diverse middle-aged samples. We examined the associations between chronotype and obesity among black and white men and women participating in the Bogalusa Heart Study (BHS).

Body mass index (BMI) and sleep data were available for 1,197 middle-aged men and women (mean age 48.2 ± 5.3 years) who participated in the BHS 2013–2016. Based on the reduced Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire’s cutoff values for chronotypes, we combined ‘definitely morning’ and ‘moderately morning’ types into ‘morning’ type, ‘definitely evening’ and ‘moderately evening’ types into ‘evening’ type and kept those who were “neither” type in a separate group. We used ‘morning’ type as the referent group. Obesity was defined as a BMI ≥ 30. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to examine associations adjusting for sex, age, education, smoking, alcohol use and drug use, depression, shift work, physical activity and sleep duration.

Evening chronotype, reported by 11.1% of participants, was associated with obesity after multi-variable adjustment, including shift work, physical activity and sleep duration (OR 1.67, 95% CI: 1.08–2.56). However, once stratified by race (black/white), this association was found only among white participants (OR = 1.91, 95% CI = 1.12–3.25) after full adjustment.

In our biracial, community-based population, evening chronotype was independently associated with obesity, specifically among white participants. Further research is needed to identify behavioral, endocrine, nutritional and genetic pathways which underlie these associations.  相似文献

Sleep deprivation (SD) has become a worldwide public health concern due to the many negative health consequences associated with suboptimal sleep. SD has been linked to a catabolic hormone signature, heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and an increase in morbidity and mortality. Herein, we investigated the effects and mechanism of SD on cardiac and metabolic health and evaluated the impact of exogenously supplied IGF-1 on these symptoms. In the present study, we show that 5 days of acute SD negatively impacted all of the various indicators of cardiac and metabolic health. All symptoms of SD were ameliorated by daily administration of IGF-1, however. IGF-1 administration also reduced the phosphorylation of Akt and expression of Bax, a promoter of apoptosis. Conversely, the expression of Bcl-2, an inhibitor of apoptosis, was elevated by IGF-1, and all IGF-1 effects were suppressed by the PI3K/Akt inhibitor LY294002, reaffirming the importance of the PI3K/Akt pathway in the maintenance of cardiac and metabolic health.  相似文献

According to the two-process model of sleep–wake regulation, a homeostatic sleep pressure, i.e. a pressure to enter into deep non-rapid eyes movement (NREM) sleep, must exhibit a purely exponential buildup during prolonged wakefulness. However, this pressure is usually measured indirectly, i.e. during the following episode of actual deep NREM sleep. The purpose of this paper was to show that, despite a prominent circadian modulation of time course of any waking EEG index, the model-postulated purely exponential buildup of the homeostatic sleep pressure can be directly confirmed. During two days of sleep deprivation experiments, the EEG of healthy adults (N = 30) was recorded every other hour throughout 5-min eyes closed relaxation. Sixteen ln-transformed single-Hz power densities (from 1 to 16 Hz) were computed for each of 5 one-min intervals. Differences between these densities obtained for the first and the following intervals were calculated and averaged. The obtained 16 values were used as the frequency weighting curve for weighting densities of each set of 16 single-Hz power densities. Summing-up of these weighted densities provided a single measure that was found to co-vary with self-rated sleepiness throughout two-day interval of sleep deprivation, thus reflecting the joint influence of the circadian and homeostatic processes. However, two-day time course of responsiveness of this measure to closing the eyes for just a few minutes exhibited a purely exponential buildup. It was concluded that this result provided a direct experimental confirmation of the model-predicted exponential buildup of the homeostatic sleep pressure across prolonged episode of wakefulness.  相似文献

The combination of total sleep deprivation (TSD) and light therapy (LT) in bipolar depression causes rapid antidepressant effects, and its mechanism of action has been hypothesized to involve the enhancement of all of the monoaminergic systems targeted by antidepressant drugs (serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine). It is still unknown if the clinical effects are paralleled by changes in biological rhythms. In a before/after design of a study of biological correlates of response, 39 inpatients affected by Type I Bipolar Disorder whose current depressive episode was without psychotic features were treated for one week with repeated TSD combined with morning LT. Wrist actigraphy was recorded throughout the study. Two-thirds of the patients responded to treatment (50% reduction in Hamilton Depression score). Responders showed an increase in daytime activity, phase-advance of the activity-rest rhythm of 57 min compared to the pre-treatment baseline, and reduced nighttime sleep. Non-responders did not show significant changes in the parameters of their activity-rest rhythm. Phase advance of the activity-rest rhythm is an actimetric correlate of the antidepressant response to TSD and LT in bipolar depression. Results are consistent with the known effects of sleep-wake manipulations and neurotransmitter function on the suprachiasmatic nucleus.  相似文献

[Purpose]

This study suggests that the negative effects of inflammation caused by obesity could be prevented through diet restriction and exercise.

[Methods]

In this study, 44 C57/BL6 male mice at about 4 weeks old (Orient bio, South Korea) were given a high fat diet for 5 weeks to make them obese. To help the mice lose weight, their dietary intake was limited and they were exercised on the treadmill for 8 weeks, and during that period, we analyzed the changes of MCP-1, ERK, Mn-SOD, HIF-1, and NOX in epididymal adipose tissue. There ND control group and obese group with high fat diet (HFD), and it is divided into four groups; HFD-ND-EX group, HFD-ND-nonEX group, HFD-DR-EX group and HFD-DR-nonEX group.

[Results]

During their progress, the mRNA expressions of HIF-1α and ERK2 decreased, as did the expression of MCP-1 contained in the nucleus by suppressing oxygen free radicals, which was observed after the exercise program. However, dietary restriction without exercise training triggered an increase in the mRNA expression of MCP-1.

[Conclusion]

To put this in perspective, combining exercise and dietary intake restriction likely prevented an influx of macrophages by reducing the number of fat cells, whereas only dietary restriction was not effective against reducing inflammation.  相似文献

This paper uses the 2005 and 2010 Canadian General Social Surveys (Time Use) to investigate the effect of wages on the sleep duration of individuals in the labour force. The endogeneity of wages is taken into account with an instrumental variables approach; we find that the wage rate affects sleeping time in general, corroborating Biddle and Hamermesh’s (1990) main conclusion. A ten percent increase in the wage rate leads to an 11–12 min decrease in sleep per week. But this number masks several effects. The responsiveness of sleep time to wage rate changes depends upon the sex of the individual, whether or not sleep problems are present and general economic conditions. By far the largest adjustment is found for insomniacs in 2010, a year of general economic downturn in Canada. We also investigate the non-randomness of insomnia in the population by using a Heckman procedure, and find that the sleep time of female non-insomniacs is even more responsive to wage rate changes once account is taken of this selection bias, but otherwise selection was not a problem in our samples.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Despite research indicating that sleep disorders influence reproductive health, the effects of sleep on reproductive hormone concentrations are poorly characterized. We prospectively followed 259 regularly menstruating women across one to two menstrual cycles (the BioCycle Study, 2005–2007), measuring fasting serum hormone concentrations up to eight times per cycle. Women provided information about daily sleep in diaries and chronotype and night/shift work on a baseline questionnaire. We evaluated percent differences in mean hormone concentrations, the magnitude of shifts in the timing and amplitude of hormone peaks, and the risk for sporadic anovulation associated with self-reported sleep patterns and night/shift work. We estimated chronotype scores – categorizing women below and above the interquartile range (IQR) as “morning” and “evening” chronotypes, respectively. For every hour increase in daily sleep duration, mean estradiol concentrations increased by 3.9% (95% confidence interval [CI] 2.0, 5.9%) and luteal phase progesterone by 9.4% (CI 4.0, 15.2%). Receiving less than 7 hours of sleep per day was associated with slightly earlier rises in peak levels for several hormones. Women reporting night/shift work (n = 77) had lower testosterone relative to women employed without night/shift work (percent difference: ?9.9%, CI ?18.4, ?0.4%). Women with morning chronotypes (n = 47) had earlier rises in estradiol during their cycles and potentially an earlier rise in luteinizing hormone. Compared to those who had intermediate chronotypes, women with evening chronotypes (n = 42) had a later luteinizing hormone peak of borderline statistical significance. A reduced risk for sporadic anovulation was suggested, but imprecise, for increasing hours of daily sleep leading up to ovulation (risk ratio 0.79, CI 0.59, 1.06), while an imprecise increased risk was observed for women with morning chronotypes (risk ratio 2.50, CI 0.93, 6.77). Sleep-related hormonal changes may not greatly alter ovarian function in healthy women, but have the potential to influence gynecologic health.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine time-of-day effects on short-term performance in obese young men. In a balanced study design, 30 boys were divided into two groups: obese (OG; n = 15) and non-obese (CG; n = 15) groups. Both groups performed anaerobic tests of strength and power (squat-Jump, SJ; counter-movement jump, CMJ; 10-m sprint; and 30-m sprint) at 08:00 and 17:00 h on separate days. The results showed morning–evening differences in all variables in CG, with significant increases at 17:00 h (around the time of peak temperature) in comparison with 08:00 h (p < 0.01) for OG. However, such morning-evening differences were not found in the OG, except for the 30-m sprint. Obesity affects the diurnal variation on performances of 30-m sprint with a significant decrease in the evening for OG of 1.23% (p < 0.01). A correlation between anaerobic performance and oral temperature was observed only in the 30-m sprint test. In conclusion, the findings of the present study indicated that obesity is a problem that can affect circadian rhythms and performance in obese young men; therefore, preventing childhood obesity should become a top priority in efforts to improve performance and health.  相似文献

Eight healthy subjects were studied during 39-h spans (from 07:00 on one day until 22:00 the second) in which they remained awake. During one experiment, subjects were exposed to 100 lux of light between 18:00 and 8:00, and during a second experiment, they were exposed to 1000 lux during the same time span. Throughout the daytime period, they were exposed to normal daylight (1500 lux or more). The nighttime 1000-lux light treatment suppressed the melatonin metabolite aMT6s, while the 100 lux treatment did not. On the treatment day, the 1000 lux, in comparison to the 100 lux, light treatment resulted in both an elevated temperature minimum and a delay in its clock-time occurrence overnight. No real circadian phase shift in the temperature, urinary melatonin, or Cortisol rhythms was detected after light treatment. This study confirmed that nocturnal exposure to lower light intensities is capable of modifying circadian variables more than previously estimated. The immediate effects of all-night light treatment are essentially not different from those of evening light. This may be important if bright light is used to improve alertness of night workers. Whether subsequent daytime alertness and sleep recovery are affected by the protocol used in our study remains to be determined.  相似文献

Two experiments were undertaken to investigate the effects of warming the body upon the responses during a subsequent cold water immersion (CWI). In both experiments the subjects, wearing swimming costumes, undertook two 45-min CWIs in water at 15° C. In experiment 1, 12 subjects exercised on a cycle ergometer until their rectal temperatures (T re) rose by an average of 0.73°C. They were then immediately immersed in the cold water. Before their other CWI they rested seated on a cycle ergometer (control condition). In experiment 2, 16 different subjects were immersed in a hot bath (40° C) until their T re rose by an average of 0.9° C; they were then immediately immersed in the cold water. Before their other CWI they were immersed in thermoneutral water (35° C; control condition). Heart rate in both experiments and respiratory frequency in experiment 1 were significantly (P < 0.05) higher during the first 30 s of CWI following active warming. In experiment 1, the rate of fall of T re during the final 15 min of CWI was significantly (P < 0.01) faster when CWI followed active warming (2.46° C · h–1) compared with the control condition (1.68°C · h–1). However, this rate was observed when absolute T re was still above that seen in the control CWIs. It is possible, therefore, that if longer CWIs had been undertaken, the two temperature curves may have converged and thereafter fallen at similar rates; this was the case with the aural temperature (T au) seen in experiment 1 and the T au and T re in experiment 2. It is concluded that pre-warming is neither beneficial nor detrimental to survival prospects during a subsequent CWI.  相似文献

Winter barley cv. Igri was grown in pots, either outside under cover, in a glasshouse or under controlled conditions and treated post-emergence with isoproturon. There was a linear relationship between the subsequent weight of plants treated with 2.5 kg a.i./ha and either evaporation from a water surface between 2–7 days post spraying or cumulative temperature between sowing and spraying. The relationship between subsequent weight of plants treated to the foliage only with 5 kg a.i./ha and cumulative temperature between sowing and spraying varied between years 1984–86. The post spraying environment had the major influence on subsequent activity of isoproturon at 2.5 kg a.i./ha applied overall to barley under controlled conditions. There was a greater reduction in CO2 exchange in plants grown after treatment under high compared to low relative humidity. When isoproturon at 5 kg a.i./ha was applied to barley plants with wet foliage, plants were slower to recover their initial rate of photosynthesis when kept wet for 24 h as compared with 11 h or when allowed to dry after treatment. Photosynthesis was decreased to a lesser extent under the same post spray conditions by 2.5 than by 5 kg a.i./ha and reduction was greater and recovery of photosynthesis slower in plants grown inside compared to outside.  相似文献
