In early spring, food and water consumption and the excretion and clearances of urine and solutes reached maximal rates. Water consumption exceeded food intake and urine production and plasma osmolality was lowest. Toward early and late summer, water intake decreased faster than food consumption and urine production. Urea excretion and clearances diminished with food consumption, while creatinine clearance decreased only slightly. Plasma osmolality increased. The data are consistent with rehydration soon after hibernation is completed, followed by a period of weight gain and dehydration in preparation for the next prolonged period of hibernation.  相似文献

Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) are marine mammals with body water needs challenged by little access to fresh water and constant exposure to salt water. Osmoregulation has been studied in marine mammals for a century. Research assessing the effects of ingested fresh water or seawater in dolphins, however, has been limited to few animals and sampling times. Nine 16- to 25-h studies were conducted on eight adult dolphins to assess the hourly impact of fresh water, seawater, and seawater with protein ingestion on plasma and urine osmolality, urine flow rate (ufr), urinary and plasma solute concentrations, and solute clearance rates. Fresh water ingestion increased ufr. Fresh water ingestion also decreased plasma and urine osmolality, sodium and chloride urine concentrations, and solute excretion rates. Seawater ingestion resulted in increased ufr, sodium, chloride, and potassium urine concentrations, sodium excretion rates, and urine osmolality. Seawater with protein ingestion was associated with increased ufr, plasma osmolality, sodium excretion, and sodium, chloride, potassium, and urea urine concentrations. In conclusion, bottlenose dolphins appear to maintain water and plasma solute balance after ingesting fresh water or seawater by altering urine osmolality and solute clearance. Ingestion of protein with seawater appears to further push osmoregulation limits and urine solute concentrations in dolphins.  相似文献

The exact mechanism underlying thiazides-induced paradoxical antidiuresis in diabetes insipidus is still elusive, but it has been hypothesized that it is exerted either via Na+-depletion activating volume-homeostatic reflexes to decrease distal delivery, or direct stimulation of distal water reabsorption. This study examined how these two proposed mechanisms actually cooperate to induce an acute bendroflumethiazide (BFTZ)-antidiuretic effect in nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI). Anaesthetized rats with lithium (Li)-induced NDI were prepared in order to measure their renal functional parameters, and in some of them, bilateral renal denervation (DNX) was induced. After a 30 min control clearance period, we infused either BFTZ into 2 groups, NDI+BFTZ and NDI/DNX+BFTZ, or its vehicle into a NDI+V group, and six 30 min experimental clearance periods were taken. During BFTZ infusion in the NDI+BFTZ group, transiently elevated Na+ excretion was associated with rapidly increased urinary osmolality and decreased free water clearance, but Li clearance and urine flow declined in the later periods. However, in the NDI/DNX+BFTZ group, there was persistently elevated Na+ excretion with unchanged Li clearance and urine flow during the experimental period, while alterations in free water clearance and urinary osmolality resembled those in the NDI+BFTZ group. In conclusion, BFTZ initially exerted two direct effects of natriuresis-diuresis and stimulating free water reabsorption at the distal nephron in NDI, which together elevated Na+ excretion and urinary osmolality but kept the urine volume unchanged in the first hour. Thereafter, the resultant sodium depletion led to the activation of neural reflexes that reduced distal fluid delivery to compensate for BFTZ-induced natriuresis-diuresis which, in cooperation with the direct distal BFTZ-antidiuretic effect, resulted in excretion of urine with a low volume, high osmolality, and normal sodium.  相似文献

The zooplancton dynamics and the populations of Boeckella gracilipes Daday of Lake Escondido (Rio Negro, Argentina) were studied from March 1987 to March 1988. Rotifers and Cladocerans showed high densities during spring and summer, while copepods were densest in autumn. The vertical distribution study showed that rotifers prefer upper levels of the water column, while cladocerans and copepods prefer lower levels, especially during thermal stratification. Boeckella gracilipes had a sex ratio biassed toward female, though changes in the sex ratio were observed. The clutch size was high in winter when the proportion of ovigerous females was low. The instantaneous birth rates were low during winter and high in summer. This result is related to the thermal cycle of the lake, by the influence of temperature on egg development time. The mortality rates showed a similar pattern, and maximum values were registered in spring and summer.  相似文献

Summary The adult sizes and reproductive capabilities of populations of the cladoceran Daphniopsis studeri Rühe from freshwater and slightly saline lakes in the Vestfold Hills, Princess Elizabeth Land were monitored during December, 1990. The population of Crooked Lake was studied in detail from July 1990–March 1991. Limited samples were also obtained from Heard Island (sub Antarctic). Obligate parthenogenesis involving the production of subitaneous eggs appears to be the case. No males occurred. The overwintering populations of continental Antarctica consist mainly of adult females containing extensive fat reserves. The main reproductive effort occurs in spring. some females produce a smaller second brood during the summer. Reproductive output increases with adult size which is related to the nutrient status of the lake and its productivity. The Heard Island populations have a higher weight to length ratio than the Vestfold populations and have a much greater reproductive output.  相似文献

Abstract: The fecal pellet-plot method has been used extensively for snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus) population studies across the species' range, but potential biases associated with the technique have not been addressed adequately. We studied hare pellet-plots in northern Idaho to quantify pellet decomposition rates across environmental gradients, and conducted feeding trials on captive hares to assess the role of diet on pellet production rates. We found that across our study area pellet numbers tended to be higher on plots with high vegetative cover, which likely was a reflection of hare habitat choice rather than lesser pellet decomposition in such habitat. A pellet decomposition experiment indicated that pellet persistence was negatively related to moisture level, and that pellets produced by hares during summer decomposed more quickly than those from winter. We found that only 19% of fecal pellets collected from plots located across northern Idaho were produced by hares during winter. There was a correlation between pellet numbers from plots that were pre-cleared 1 year earlier and estimated numbers of hares on 6 study areas. A similar correlation was lacking for pellet counts from uncleared plots, implying that hare population estimation via pellet-plot counts should involve plot pre-clearing. In captive studies, juvenile hares produced slightly fewer pellets per day per gram of food ingested than adults, but pellet production was similar across diets comprised of 10 different browse species. We conclude that for our study area the fecal pellet-plot method may be subject to notable pellet decomposition bias, and therefore recommend that use of the method elsewhere across the species' range be preceded by assessment of both the pellet-hare density relationship and pellet decomposition rates across habitats.  相似文献

Daily urine volumes, plasma creatinine concentrations, and creatinine clearance were measured in 106 patients with unipolar and bipolar affective disorders attending a "lithium" clinic. Urine volumes exceeded 3.51 in only six patients, plasma creatinine concentrations exceeded 150 mumol/1 (1.7 mg/100 ml) in only five, and creatinine clearance was below 50 ml/min in 16. Renal function was assessed by measuring creatinine clearance and renal tubular function, including response to 20 hours of water deprivation, in a representative sample of 30 patients from the lithium clinic and 30 psychiatric patients matched for age and sex who were taking other psychotropic drugs. Creatinine clearance and tubular function, including urine osmolality after water deprivation, were not significantly different between the two groups. Urinary excretion of arginine vasopressin (AVP), however, was much greater in the lithium-treated patients, who therefore had a diminished tubular responsiveness to AVP. The findings do not support suggestions that long-term lithium treatment results in seriously impaired renal function, renal damage, and polyuria. Compared with other series, however, the patients were being maintained with low serum lithium concentrations, which apparently area as effective prophylactically as higher concentrations.  相似文献

Question: Pollution and eutrophication of surface water is increasingly a problem in agricultural landscapes. Do intact (relatively undisturbed) and degraded forests differ in seasonal nutrient storage and therefore potential to ameliorate nutrient pollution? Location: United States, Midwestern region. Methods: We used three sets of paired plots, where intact plots were located close to disturbed woodlands. Herbaceous perennials located in eight 0.25 m2 quadrats in the plots were harvested (in spring and mid‐summer), dried, separated into above‐ and below‐ground plant parts, and weighed to determine biomass. Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium content of the plant tissues were then determined, and these data combined with biomass to estimate nutrient storage. Results: In spring, intact sites had 62% greater above‐ground biomass than disturbed sites and 75% greater below‐ground biomass. In summer, below‐ground biomass of intact plots was still much greater than that of disturbed plots (73 percent), but above‐ground biomass was similar. Nutrient tissue concentration generally did not differ, nor did soil nutrient levels. The disturbed sites were largely missing one group of species, the spring ephemerals, and this accounted for the difference in biomass and nutrient storage between sites. Conclusions: Relatively undisturbed woodlands in our study had a much greater capacity to store nutrients, and therefore ameliorate nutrient pollution, in early spring. This is significant because spring is also the time of highest potential leaching of nutrients into surface water.  相似文献

Previous studies have demonstrated a diuretic effect of clonidine at low intrarenal infusion rates with a natriuretic effect being observed at high infusion rates (greater than or equal to 3 micrograms.kg-1.min-1). The natriuresis at high infusion rates may have been secondary to increased renal prostaglandin production. We therefore evaluated the effects of indomethacin (a cyclooxygenase inhibitor) on the response to clonidine in the anesthetized rat. Intrarenal infusions of saline (vehicle) or clonidine (0.1, 0.3, 1, and 3 micrograms.kg-1.min-1) were examined both in the presence and absence of pretreatment with indomethacin (5 mg/kg, i.p.). Clonidine produced a dose-related increase in urine volume and free water clearance at 0.3, 1, and 3 micrograms.kg-1.min-1 as compared with the vehicle group. Sodium excretion and osmolar excretion were increased only at the highest infusion rate investigated. Following indomethacin pretreatment, clonidine produced a greater increase in urine volume at each infusion rate investigated. The indomethacin pretreatment also resulted in a potentiation of the natriuretic effect of clonidine at all infusion rates. Interestingly, this was associated with an increase in osmolar clearance but not free water clearance. These effects of indomethacin were reversed by infusion of prostaglandin E2. An infusion of prostaglandin E2 attenuated the indomethacin-induced increase in both urine flow rate and sodium excretion, indicating that the effects of indomethacin were mediated by prostaglandin inhibition. These results suggest that endogenous prostaglandin production attenuates the renal effects of clonidine, and as well, that in the presence of alpha 2-adrenoceptor stimulation, prostaglandin E2 mediates an antidiuretic and antinatriuretic effect.  相似文献

Understanding the role of urine marking in the territorial systems of wild mammals can be difficult, especially for nocturnal cryptic species. Even for common species, such as the red fox Vulpes vulpes, a comprehensive analysis of seasonal and sex differences has not been carried out. Using 6 years of infra-red video monitoring, we compared marking rates between months and between sexes. Urine marking was significantly lower during summer (June–August). Males urine marked significantly more frequently than females during late summer and autumn, but not winter. Males marked more frequently than females also during March. There was no increase during the breeding season for either sex. Our results correlate with previous partial data but demonstrate how urine marking rates vary across the year. They also further support the greater role of males in fox territorial maintenance. Urine marking is lowest during summer when territorial intrusions are least, whilst the higher male urine marking rate in March reflects the period when females are denning. Overall, our results provide the first comprehensive analysis of red fox urine marking rates, contributing to a greater understanding of territoriality and olfactory communication.  相似文献

1. Snowshoe hare ( Lepus americanus Erxleben) populations were studied in south-west Yukon during the low phase of the 10-year population cycle. Food availability and predator abundance were manipulated in a factorial design to determine the importance of each factor in hare dynamics during this phase.
2. Food was abundant during the low phase, and snowshoe hares were not food limited.
3. Survival of hares was higher than at any other phase of the cycle, and predators were scarce, but >75% of hare deaths resulted from predation.
4. Food addition resulted in higher hare densities and better body condition than on control sites. There were no observable effects of food addition on population rate of increase, recruitment, survival or age structure.
5. Mammalian predator reduction resulted in higher hare densities, higher survival, better body condition and an older age structure. Relative to control populations, recruitment was lower and population rates of increase similar.
6. The joint manipulation of food addition + predator reduction had greater positive effects on hare density and body condition than either single factor manipulation. Survival was better than on control sites, and the age structure was older than on control sites. Population rates of increase were similar, but recruitment was higher on the control areas.
7. We conclude that snowshoe hare dynamics at the low of the cycle are dominated by the interaction of food and predation. Risk of predation also had indirect effects on snowshoe hare age structure and body condition.  相似文献

The effects on fetal renal function of restricting maternal water intake to 1 l/day for 6 days was investigated in 7 chronically-catheterized fetuses (gestation age 118-131 days). Restriction of water intake caused a significant decrease in maternal urine flow rate and significant increases in maternal plasma and urinary osmolality. Fetal renal function was investigated on the third and sixth days of the period of restricted maternal intake of water. Urine flow rate from the fetus was depressed significantly, and urinary osmolality increased significantly. The glomerular filtration rate remained unchanged, and free water clearance was decreased. These changes indicate increased water reabsorption in the distal parts of the nephron, probably consequent upon increased circulating levels of antidiuretic hormone. In 3 fetuses whose mothers subsequently had free access to water, these changes in urine flow rate and free water clearance that occurred during water restriction were reversed. There was an inverse correlation between maternal plasma osmolality and fetal free water clearance corrected for glomerular filtration rate. It is concluded that when water intake by a pregnant animal is restricted, the availability of water to the fetus is reduced and fetal sheep respond by producing a concentrated urine.  相似文献

Carp Cyprinus carpio infected with the haemoflagellate Trypanoplasma borreli undergo progressive nephritis associated with a destruction of approx. 40% of the nephric tubules. In an attempt to analyse the effect of the nephritis on the osmoregulation of affected carp, the clinical chemical properties of plasma and urine samples were analysed. Parasitised carp excreted greater amounts of electrolytes in their urine than uninfected carp which excreted highly diluted urine with an osmolality of about 10% of plasma osmolality. During the course of the infection, urine osmolality increased up to 26% of plasma osmolality by Day 21 post-infection (p.i.). The plasma:urine ratio of Na+ also increased, while concomitant losses of Mg2+, Ca2+, K+ and inorganic phosphate were less pronounced. Infected carp were able to maintain a normal solute balance in their plasma. Plasma hydration (indicated by decreased protein contents) occurred on Day 21 p.i. Our data indicate that in T. borreli-infected carp, reabsorption processes of the distal renal tubule were disturbed, while secretory and absorption processes in the proximal tubule appeared to be less affected. In addition, infected carp were able to compensate their increased ion losses, probably by (energy-consuming) active absorption processes. The energy budget of infected carp was additionally affected by a substantial direct consumption of plasma glucose by the parasite.  相似文献

Oyster and seawater samples were collected seasonally from May 1984 through April 1985 from shellfish-growing areas in Washington, California, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, South Carolina, Virginia, and Rhode Island which had been designated as approved or prohibited by the National Shellfish Sanitation Program. Fecal coliforms counts, aerobic plate counts, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus densities were determined for the samples. Mean V. parahaemolyticus density was more than 100 times greater in oysters than in water, whereas density of fecal coliforms was approximately 10 times higher in oysters. Seasonal and geographical distributions of V. parahaemolyticus were related to water temperature, with highest densities in samples collected in the spring and the summer along the Gulf coast. The synthetic DNA probe for thermostable direct hemolysin hybridized with 2 of 50 isolates, 1 of which was positive by the Kanagawa test.  相似文献

A rapid, specific radioimmunoassay has been used to measure Tamm-Horsfall glycoprotein (TH glycoprotein) in urine. The apparent concentration increased with increasing dilution of urine in water, reaching a plateau at 1 in 20. This increase was greater the higher the osmolality and TH glycoprotein concentration and the lower the pH of the original sample. A dilution of 1 in 100 was chosen for routine assay. Whole urine was centrifuged and the dissolved precipitate and supernatant assayed to quantify the proportion of TH glycoprotein of TH glycoprotein initially present in highly aggregated form. This correlated positively and significantly with increasing osmolality, decreasing pH and increasing TH glycoprotein concentration. When the urine was diluted 1 in 100 in water, no TH glycoprotein was precipitated by centrifugation and the measured concentrations were unaffected by alterations of urine pH or calcium concentration or by addition of sodium dodecyl sulphate. Parallelism was demonstrated between the diluted samples and the disaggregated standard preparation. Recovery of added standard to diluted urine varied between 96 and 114%. The apparent concentration of TH glycoprotein in neat or diluted urine was not affected by freezing or by storage at 4 degrees C or room temperature for at least 2 days. A physiological range for the urinary excretion rate was established as 22--56 mg/24 h, based on samples from 29 individuals with normal renal function, as defined by their creatinine clearance. There was no significant correlation between serum concentrations of TH glycoprotein and its urinary excretion rate, nor between urinary excretion rate and creatinine clearance.  相似文献

1. We investigated the role of algal composition on pumping, clearance, assimilation, pseudofaeces and faeces production, feeding time budgets, and condition of zebra mussels from spring to autumn at two sites in Saginaw Bay (Lake Huron) and one site in western Lake Erie. Size‐fractioned chlorophyll was used to distinguish between feeding on small (<53 μm) and large (>53 μm) size fractions, and mussel feeding behaviour was quantified by video observations. 2. Mussel pumping, clearance and assimilation rates varied among sites, particularly during summer, when phytoplankton composition varied considerably among sites. Lowest values were seen at the inner‐bay site of Saginaw Bay, low to moderate values at the outer‐bay site of Saginaw Bay, and high values at the Lake Erie site. Clearance, pumping and assimilation rates were all highly positively correlated (R2 = 0.76) with per cent contribution of flagellates to total algal biomass and negatively correlated with per cent of Microcystis aeruginosa (R2 = 0.63). The negative effects on pumping rate (as determined by clearance rate on the <53 μm fraction) of Microcystis, which occurred in the >53 μm fraction, could be mitigated by the presence of flagellates in the <53 μm fraction. 3. Visual observations of mussel feeding showed evidence for poor seston quality during summer negatively affecting feeding rates. High faeces production during times of low assimilation rate was suggestive of poor assimilation efficiency and/or viable gut passage of grazing resistant algae. Long periods of time not filtering by the mussels during some Microcystis blooms and lack of production of a filtering current during one experiment were suggestive of intoxication from microcystin or other secondary compounds. 4. Clearance and feeding rates of the mussels in Saginaw Bay were high during spring and autumn and very low in summer, particularly at the inner‐bay site. Condition of the mussels (mass : length ratio) was highest in spring and lowest during summer. This seasonal variation probably reflected high food assimilation rate during autumn and spring and low assimilation rate and reproduction during summer. The condition of mussels throughout the year was higher at the outer‐bay than the inner‐bay site, reflecting better feeding conditions at the former. Mussel selective feeding may have been responsible for the poor quality of food at the inner bay site; therefore, we postulate that a regime shift in phytoplankton composition promoted by the mussels fed back into lowered condition of the mussels.  相似文献

As evidence mounts that the feral Cat (Felis catus) is a significant threat to endemic Australian biodiversity and impedes reintroduction attempts, uncertainty remains about the impact a residual population of cats following control will have on a mammal reintroduction programme. Also, behavioural interactions between cats and their prey continue to be an area of interest. Within the framework of an ecosystem restoration project, we tested the hypotheses that successful reintroductions of some medium‐sized mammals are possible in locations where feral cats are controlled (but not eradicated) in the absence of European Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes), and that hare‐wallabies that dispersed from their release area are more vulnerable to cat predation compared with those that remain at the release site. We used radiotelemetry to monitor the survivorship and dispersal of 16 Rufous Hare‐wallabies (Lagorchestes hirsutus spp.) and 18 Banded Hare‐wallabies (Lagostrophus fasciatus fasciatus) reintroduced to four sites within Shark Bay, Western Australia. Nearly all foxes were removed and feral cats were subject to ongoing control that kept their indices low relative to prerelease levels. All monitored hare‐wallabies were killed by cats within eight and 10 months following release. Significant predation by feral cats was not immediate: most kills occurred in clusters, with periods of several months where no mortalities occurred. Once a hare‐wallaby was killed, however, predation continued until each population was eliminated. Animals remaining near their release site survived longer than those that dispersed. The aetiology of predation events observed offers new insights into patterns of feral cat behaviour and mammal releases. We propose a hypothesis that these intense per capita predation events may reflect a targeted hunting behaviour in individual feral cats. Even where feral cats are controlled, the outcome from consistent predation events will result in reintroduction failures. Managers considering the reintroduction of medium‐sized mammals in the presence of feral cats should, irrespective of concurrent cat control, consider the low probability of success. We advocate alternative approaches to cat‐baiting alone for the recovery of cat‐vulnerable mammals such as hare‐wallabies.  相似文献

Abstract The extent of grazing by two macropodids, the agile wallaby (Macropus agilis) and the swamp wallaby (Wallabia bicolor) on coastal foredunes on South Stradbroke Island in southeast Queensland was investigated to determine potential impacts on the principal sand colonizing species, sand spinifex grass (Spinifex sericeus). Grazing on spinifex grass on the foredunes of South Stradbroke island can be attributed principally to agile wallabies. Foraging activity by wallabies was higher in areas of high spinifex abundance, however, grazing intensity and impact on spinifex was only important on foredunes with low spinifex abundance. Spinifex consumption by wallabies was also related to a number of factors, especially composition and structure of vegetation in adjacent habitats. Spinifex consumption increased when the abundance of ground cover components (grasses, sedges, forbs) in adjacent habitats was low and structural complexity was high. Grazing on foredunes by wallabies significantly affects the species composition of the foredune community by excluding the establishment of a number of perennial foredune plant species. This may have implications for community succession in coastal ecosystems.  相似文献

AIM: The effects of treatment with hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) combined with amiloride were elucidated and compared to HCTZ treatment alone and combined with acemetacin or triamterene in a Japanese adult patient with congenital nephrogenic diabetes insipidus. METHODS: The study was divided into seven periods: (1) HCTZ and acemetacin; (2) control period; (3) HCTZ; (4) a second control period; (5) HCTZ and amiloride; (6) a third control period, and (7) HCTZ and triamterene. Fluid intake, urine volume, urinary Na, K, creatinine, and osmolality and serum Na, K, Cl, CO2, and osmolality were measured, and free water clearance and proximal and distal tubular Na reabsorption rates were calculated. RESULTS: Without drug administration, the urine volume was about 8,000 ml/day. The urine volume was reduced to about 6,000 ml/day with HCTZ. A further urine volume reduction to about 5,000 ml/day was obtained with the second drug administration, and the effects were similar among the three regimens. Serum and urinary osmolality and free water clearance were also similar among the three combinations, whereas the urinary potassium excretion was the least, and the serum potassium concentration was the highest with HCTZ plus amiloride. Besides, no alkalosis was observed only with this combination. CONCLUSION: HCTZ plus amiloride may be superior to HCTZ plus acemetacin and HCTZ plus triamterene in preventing hyperkaliuria, hypokalemia, and metabolic alkalosis.  相似文献
