Xylem networks are vulnerable to the formation and spread of gas embolisms that reduce water transport. Embolisms spread through interconduit pits, but the three-dimensional (3D) complexity and scale of xylem networks means that the functional implications of intervessel connections are not well understood. Here, xylem networks of grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) were reconstructed from 3D high-resolution X-ray micro-computed tomography (microCT) images. Xylem network performance was then modeled to simulate loss of hydraulic conductivity under increasingly negative xylem sap pressure simulating drought stress conditions. We also considered the sensitivity of xylem network performance to changes in key network parameters. We found that the mean pit area per intervessel connection was constant across 10 networks from three, 1.5-m stem segments, but short (0.5 cm) segments fail to capture complete network connectivity. Simulations showed that network organization imparted additional resistance to embolism spread beyond the air-seeding threshold of pit membranes. Xylem network vulnerability to embolism spread was most sensitive to variation in the number and location of vessels that were initially embolized and pit membrane vulnerability. Our results show that xylem network organization can increase stem resistance to embolism spread by 40% (0.66 MPa) and challenge the notion that a single embolism can spread rapidly throughout an entire xylem network.

A complete digital reconstruction of a grapevine xylem network reveals that network connectivity imparts greater resistance to drought-induced embolism spread than pit membrane properties suggest.

Detection of Xylem Cavitation in Corn under Field Conditions
We report the detection of cavitation events in corn (Zea mays) plants growing under field conditions in Greeley, CO. To our knowledge this study reports the first successful attempt to monitor continuously for long periods the cavitation events of a crop plant using acoustic detection techniques. Cavitation events occur in corn plants using acoustic detection techniques. Cavitation events occur in corn plants irrigated daily when the xylem pressure potentials fall below about −1.0 megapascals. In unirrigated corn we estimate that approximately half of all vessels cavitate on any one day when xylem pressure potentials fall below about −1.8 megapascals. We postulate that root pressure developed every night in irrigated and unirrigated corn is adequate to rejoin cavitated water columns.

Spring filling of xylem vessels in wild grapevine
Xylem vessels in grapevines Vitis labrusca L. and Vitis riparia Michx. growing in New England contained air over winter and yet filled with xylem sap and recovered their maximum hydraulic conductance during the month before leaf expansion in late May. During this period root pressures between 10 and 100 kilopascals were measured. Although some air in vessels apparently dissolved in ascending xylem sap, results indicated that some is pushed out of vessels and then out of the vine. Air in the vessel network distal to advancing xylem sap was compressed at about 3 kilopascals; independent measurements indicated this was sufficient to push air across vessel ends, and from vessels to the exterior through dead vine tips, inflorescence scars, and points on the bark. Once wetted, vessel ends previously air-permeable at 3 kilopascals remained sealed against air at pressures up to 2 and 3 megapascals. Permeability at 3 kilopascals was restored by dehydrating vines below −2.4 megapascals. We suggest that the decrease in permeability with hydration is due to formation of water films across pores in intervascular pit membranes; this water seal can maintain a pressure difference of roughly 2 megapascals, and prevents cavitation by aspirated air at xylem pressures less negative than −2.4 megapascals.

Xylem embolism and drought-induced stomatal closure in maize
Cochard H 《Planta》2002,215(3):466-471
Water relations during drought and xylem vulnerability to embolism were studied on four maize ( Zea mays L.) genotypes having contrasting grain yields under drought conditions. Drought provoked a drop in xylem pressure, leaf water potential and whole-plant transpiration. Transpiration was reduced to a minimum value when xylem pressures reached ca. -1.6 MPa. This value corresponded to the threshold xylem pressure below which xylem embolism developed to a substantial degree in leaf midribs. Therefore, xylem embolism always remained low in leaf veins, even when plants exhibited clear water-stress symptoms. This suggests that stomatal closure during drought contains xylem embolism to a minimum value. Cavitation resistance was not related to grain yield under drought conditions for the four genotypes evaluated. However, it can be speculated that an increase in cavitation resistance by cultural practices or genetic selection may increase drought survival in maize.

Vulnerability to xylem embolism by freeze-thaw cycles and water stress was quantified in ring-porous (Quercus gambelii Nutt.), diffuse-porous (Populus tremuloides Michx., Betula occidentalis Hook.), and conifer species (Abies lasiocarpa Nutt., Juniperus scopulorum Sarg.). Embolism was measured by its reduction of xylem hydraulic conductivity; it was induced by xylem tension (water-stress response) and by a tension plus a freeze-thaw cycle (freeze response). Conifers showed little (Juniperus) or no (Abies) freeze response even to repeated cycles. In contrast, Quercus embolized more than 90% by freezing at tensions below 0.2 MPa, whereas similar embolism without freezing required tensions above 4.5 MPa. Diffuse-porous trees (Betula, Populus) showed an intermediate freeze response. The magnitude of the freeze response was correlated with conduit volume but occurred at higher tensions than predicted from theory. Large early-wood vessels (2.8 × 10−9 m3) in oak were most vulnerable to embolism by freezing, small vessels in Populus and Betula were intermediate (approximately 7 × 10−11 m3), and tracheids in conifers (about 3 × 10−13 m3) were most resistant. The same trend was found within a stem: embolism by freeze-thawing occurred preferentially in wider conduits. The water-stress response was not correlated with conduit volume; previous work indicates it is a function of interconduit pit membrane structure. Native embolism levels during winter corroborated laboratory results on freezing: Quercus embolized 95% with the first fall freeze, Populus and Betula showed gradual increases to more than 90% embolism by winter's end, and Abies remained below 30%.

Recovery of hydraulic conductivity after the induction of embolisms was studied in woody stems of laurel (Laurus nobilis). Previous experiments confirming the recovery of hydraulic conductivity when xylem pressure potential was less than −1 MPa were repeated, and new experiments were done to investigate the changes in solute composition in xylem vessels during refilling. Xylem sap collected by perfusion of excised stem segments showed elevated levels of several ions during refilling. Stem segments were frozen in liquid N2 to view refilling vessels using cryoscanning electron microscopy. Vessels could be found in all three states of presumed refilling: (a) mostly water with a little air, (b) mostly air with a little water, or (c) water droplets extruding from vessel pits adjacent to living cells. Radiographic probe microanalysis of refilling vessels revealed nondetectable levels of dissolved solutes. Results are discussed in terms of proposed mechanisms of refilling in vessels while surrounding vessels were at a xylem pressure potential of less than −1 MPa. We have concluded that none of the existing paradigms explains the results.

Mechanism of water stress-induced xylem embolism
We investigated the hypothesis that water stress-induced xylem embolism is caused by air aspirated into functional vessels from neighboring embolized ones (e.g. embolized by physical damage) via pores in intervessel pit membranes. The following experiments with sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) support the hypothesis. (a) Most vessels in dehydrating stem segments embolized at xylem pressures < −3 megapascals; at this point the pressure difference across intervessel pits between air-filled vessels at the segment's ends and internal water-filled vessels was >3 megapascals. This same pressure difference was found to be sufficient to force air across intervessel pits from air injection experiments of hydrated stem segments. This suggests air entry at pits is causing embolism in dehydrating stems. (b) Treatments that increased the permeability of intervessel pits to air injection also caused xylem to embolize at less negative xylem pressures. Permeability was increased either by perfusing stems with solutions of surface tension below that of water or by perfusion with a solution of oxalic acid and calcium. The mechanism of oxalic-calcium action on permeability is unknown, but may relate to the ability of oxalate to chelate calcium from the pectate fraction of the pit membrane. (c) Diameter of pores in pit membranes measured with the scanning electron microscope were within the range predicted by hypothesis (≤0.4 micrometer).

Increases in drought‐induced tree mortality are being observed in tropical rain forests worldwide and are also likely to affect the geographical distribution of tropical vegetation. However, the mechanisms underlying the drought vulnerability and environmental distribution of tropical species have been little studied. We measured vulnerability to xylem embolism (P50) of 13 woody species endemic to New Caledonia and with different xylem conduit morphologies. We examined the relation between P50, along with other leaf and xylem functional traits, and a range of habitat variables. Selected species had P50 values ranging between ?4.03 and ?2.00 MPa with most species falling in a narrow range of resistance to embolism above ?2.7 MPa. Embolism vulnerability was significantly correlated with elevation, mean annual temperature and percentage of species occurrences located in rain forest habitats. Xylem conduit type did not explain variation in P50. Commonly used functional traits such as wood density and leaf traits were not related to embolism vulnerability. Xylem embolism vulnerability stands out among other commonly used functional traits as a major driver of species environmental distribution. Drought‐induced xylem embolism vulnerability behaves as a physiological trait closely associated with the habitat occupation of rain forest woody species.

The cut ends of excised Zea mays roots were sealed to a pressure transducer and their root pressures recorded. These rose approximately hyperbolically to a maximum value of 4.21 ± 0.34 bar after 30 to 40 minutes. Xylem exudate could not be collected at this pressure since the flow rate was zero. Samples of exudate were collected at lower applied pressures (ΔP), however, and Δπ, the osmotic pressure difference between them and the solution bathing the root, was measured by freezing point depression. A plot of ΔP/Δπ against Jv/Δπ, where Jv is the volume flux, proved to be a straight line whose intercept, equal to σ, the reflection coefficient, was 0.853 ± 0.016. The maximum xylem concentrations of various chemical species were found by a similar extrapolative method and compared with those in the cell sap. This indicated that (a) Ca2+, Mg2+, NO32−, SO42−, and most amino acids move from the cells to the xylem down an electrochemical potential gradient; (b) relative to these ions H+, NH4+, glutamine and asparagine are actively transported into the xylem; and (c) H2PO4, and K+ are actively retained in the symplasm.

Experiments were conducted with containerized `Tahiti' lime (Citrus latifolia Tan.) trees in order to define conditions needed to induce flowering. Cyclical or continuous water stress for 4 to 5 weeks induced flowering. Moderate (−2.25 megapascals, midday) or severe (−3.5 megapascals, midday) water stress as measured by leaf xylem pressure potential, for as little as 2 weeks induced flowering, but the response was more significant in severely stressed trees. Low temperature (18°C day/10°C night) induced a time dependent flowering response much like that of moderate water stress. Significantly negative leaf xylem pressure potentials as compared to controls were found only under water stress treatment, suggesting that a common stress-linked event, separate from low plant water potential is involved in floral induction. Leafless, immature cuttings from mature, field-grown trees were induced to flower by water stress treatment, suggesting that leaves are not essential for a flower inductive response.

The vascular system of grapevine (Vitis spp.) has been reported as being highly vulnerable, even though grapevine regularly experiences seasonal drought. Consequently, stomata would remain open below water potentials that would generate a high loss of stem hydraulic conductivity via xylem embolism. This situation would necessitate daily cycles of embolism repair to restore hydraulic function. However, a more parsimonious explanation is that some hydraulic techniques are prone to artifacts in species with long vessels, leading to the overestimation of vulnerability. The aim of this study was to provide an unbiased assessment of (1) the vulnerability to drought-induced embolism in perennial and annual organs and (2) the ability to refill embolized vessels in two Vitis species X-ray micro-computed tomography observations of intact plants indicated that both Vitis vinifera and Vitis riparia were relatively vulnerable, with the pressure inducing 50% loss of stem hydraulic conductivity = −1.7 and −1.3 MPa, respectively. In V. vinifera, both the stem and petiole had similar sigmoidal vulnerability curves but differed in pressure inducing 50% loss of hydraulic conductivity (−1.7 and −1 MPa for stem and petiole, respectively). Refilling was not observed as long as bulk xylem pressure remained negative (e.g. at the apical part of the plants; −0.11 ± 0.02 MPa) and change in percentage loss of conductivity was 0.02% ± 0.01%. However, positive xylem pressure was observed at the basal part of the plant (0.04 ± 0.01 MPa), leading to a recovery of conductance (change in percentage loss of conductivity = −0.24% ± 0.12%). Our findings provide evidence that grapevine is unable to repair embolized xylem vessels under negative pressure, but its hydraulic vulnerability segmentation provides significant protection of the perennial stem. The plant hydraulic system is located at the interface between soil water and the atmosphere. Evaporative demand from the atmosphere generates a tension within a continuous xylem water column, pulling water from the soil, through roots, stems, petioles, and leaves (Dixon, 1896). Under drought conditions, the overall resistance to water flow through the soil-plant continuum increases. Increased resistance to water flow results from changes in the resistance at multiple specific locations along the flow pathway: in the soil, at the soil-root interface, and in the roots, the main plant axis (i.e. stems and branches), the petioles, and the leaves. Two primary mechanisms controlling the resistance are stomatal closure (leaf-to-air water flow) and the loss of xylem hydraulic conductivity (soil-to-leaf water flow; Cochard et al., 2002). Stomatal closure is closely related to decreasing plant water status (Brodribb and Holbrook, 2003) and is often considered to be a protective mechanism against the loss of xylem hydraulic conductivity (Tyree and Sperry, 1988; Jones and Sutherland, 1991). Loss of xylem hydraulic conductivity occurs when the water potential of xylem sap reaches levels negative enough to disrupt the metastability of the water column, potentially resulting in embolism.Generally, high resistance to embolism is observed in species distributed in dry environments, whereas highly vulnerable species are distributed in wet environments (Maherali et al., 2004; Choat et al., 2012). Although grapevine (Vitis spp.) is widely cultivated, including in regions where it is frequently exposed to water deficit during the growing season (Lovisolo et al., 2010), recent studies have produced contrasting estimates of its resistance to embolism. Grapevine has been described as either vulnerable (Zufferey et al., 2011; Jacobsen and Pratt, 2012) or relatively resistant (Choat et al., 2010; Brodersen et al., 2013). In Vitis spp., and Vitis vinifera especially, stomatal closure is typically observed for midday leaf water potentials less than −1.5 MPa (Schultz, 2003). Thus, according to some studies, significant losses in xylem hydraulic conductivity should be observed before stomatal closure (Ψ50 > −1 MPa; Jacobsen and Pratt, 2012; Jacobsen et al., 2015), implying that embolism would be commonplace. The risk of hydraulic dysfunction is mitigated along the hydraulic pathway by hydraulic segmentation (i.e. more distal organs such as leaves and petioles will be at greater risk to embolism than more basal organs such as the trunk; Tyree and Zimmermann 2002; Choat et al., 2005). This could promote hydraulic safety in larger, perennial organs, which represent a greater investment of resources for the plant. Hydraulic segmentation may occur in two ways. During transpiration, the xylem pressure will always be more negative in more distal parts of the pathway (leaves and petioles). All else being equal, this translates to a greater probability of embolism in distal organs. However, organs also may differ in their vulnerability to embolism, compensating or exacerbating the effects of differences in xylem pressure along the pathway. If leaves or petioles were more vulnerable to embolism than branches and the trunk, then they would be far more likely to suffer embolism during periods of water stress. This would allow petioles, leaves (Nolf et al., 2015), or even young branches (Rood et al., 2000) to become embolized without significant impacts on the trunk and larger branches. In grapevine, petioles have been described as extremely sensitive to cavitation (Ψ50 of approximately −1 MPa; Zufferey et al., 2011). However, the hydraulic methods employed in those previous studies have been shown to be prone to artifacts (Wheeler et al., 2013; Torres-Ruiz et al., 2015), necessitating the use of a noninvasive assessment of drought-induced embolism.High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) produces three-dimensional images of xylem tissue in situ, allowing for a noninvasive assessment of embolism resistance. This technique has provided robust results in various plant species with contrasting xylem anatomy (Charra-Vaskou et al., 2012, 2016; Dalla-Salda et al., 2014; Torres-Ruiz et al., 2014; Cochard et al., 2015; Knipfer et al., 2015; Bouche et al., 2016). Synchrotron-based tomography facilities allow the visualization of intact plants, offering a noninvasive, in vivo estimation of the loss of hydraulic conductivity within the xylem (Choat et al., 2016). Moreover, the quality of the x-ray beam in the synchrotron facilities provides high resolution and signal-to-noise ratio, making image analysis simple and accurate. If grapevine were as vulnerable to xylem embolism as suggested in some studies, refilling of embolized vessels would be expected to occur on a frequent (daily) basis in order to maintain hydraulic continuity (Sperry et al., 1994; Cochard et al., 2001; Hacke and Sperry, 2003; Charrier et al., 2013). Various refilling mechanisms have been proposed to date, including positive root/stem pressure and refilling while the xylem is under negative pressure via water droplet growth (Salleo et al., 1996; Brodersen et al., 2010; Knipfer et al., 2016). Positive pressure in the xylem sap can be related to mineral nutrition and soil temperature in autumn or spring (Ewers et al., 2001) and to soluble carbohydrate transport into the vessel lumen during winter (Améglio et al., 2001; Charrier et al., 2013). Refilling under negative pressure is based on the hypothesis that embolized vessels are isolated from surrounding functional vessels, permitting positive pressures to develop and the embolism to dissolve (Salleo et al., 1996; Tyree et al., 1999). This process has been related to the chemistry of conduit walls (Holbrook and Zwieniecki, 1999), the geometry of interconduit bordered pits (Zwieniecki and Holbrook, 2000), and phloem unloading (Nardini et al., 2011). While refilling via positive pressure has been described frequently (Sperry et al., 1987, 1994; Hacke and Sauter 1996; Cochard et al., 2001; Améglio et al., 2004; Cobb et al., 2007), refilling under negative pressure remains controversial (Cochard et al., 2013, 2015). In grapevine particularly, imaging techniques have provided evidence of refilling in embolized vessels (Brodersen et al., 2010), but uncertainties remain regarding the xylem water potential measurement at the position of the scan. The goal of this study was to provide a noninvasive assessment of (1) the vulnerability to drought-induced embolism in two widespread grapevine species in perennial (V. vinifera and Vitis riparia) and annual (V. vinifera) organs and (2) the ability to refill embolized vessels under positive or negative pressure (V. vinifera). This approach would indicate whether embolism formation and repair are likely to occur on a daily basis and/or if hydraulic segmentation could protect perennial organs from drought stress. Stems and petioles from intact V. vinifera ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’ and V. riparia plants were scanned using Synchrotron-based HRCT, characterizing their vulnerability to embolism and quantifying their ability to refill at different positions along the plant axis (base and apex) in relation to bulk xylem pressure. These data were integrated with other noninvasive techniques assessing leaf hydraulics and transpiration.

Xylem vulnerability to embolism represents an important trait to determine species distribution patterns and drought resistance. However, estimating embolism resistance frequently requires time-consuming and ambiguous hydraulic lab measurements. Based on a recently developed pneumatic method, we present and test the “Pneumatron”, a device that generates high time-resolution and fully automated vulnerability curves. Embolism resistance is estimated by applying a partial vacuum to extract air from an excised xylem sample, while monitoring the pressure change over time. Although the amount of gas extracted is strongly correlated with the percentage loss of xylem conductivity, validation of the Pneumatron was performed by comparison with the optical method for Eucalyptus camaldulensis leaves. The Pneumatron improved the precision of the pneumatic method considerably, facilitating the detection of small differences in the (percentage of air discharged [PAD] < 0.47%). Hence, the Pneumatron can directly measure the 50% PAD without any fitting of vulnerability curves. PAD and embolism frequency based on the optical method were strongly correlated (r2 = 0.93) for E. camaldulensis. By providing an open source platform, the Pneumatron represents an easy, low-cost, and powerful tool for field measurements, which can significantly improve our understanding of plant–water relations and the mechanisms behind embolism.

Background and AimsThe ability to avoid drought-induced embolisms in the xylem is one of the essential traits for plants to survive periods of water shortage. Over the past three decades, hydraulic studies have been focusing on trees, which limits our ability to understand how herbs tolerate drought. Here we investigate the embolism resistance in inflorescence stems of four Arabidopsis thaliana accessions that differ in growth form and drought response. We assess functional traits underlying the variation in embolism resistance amongst the accessions studied using detailed anatomical observations.MethodsVulnerability to xylem embolism was evaluated via vulnerability curves using the centrifuge technique and linked with detailed anatomical observations in stems using light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy.Key ResultsThe data show significant differences in stem P50, varying 2-fold from −1.58 MPa in the Cape Verde Island accession to −3.07 MPa in the woody soc1 ful double mutant. Out of all the anatomical traits measured, intervessel pit membrane thickness (TPM) best explains the differences in P50, as well as P12 and P88. The association between embolism resistance and TPM can be functionally explained by the air-seeding hypothesis. There is no evidence that the correlation between increased woodiness and increased embolism resistance is directly related to functional aspects. However, we found that increased woodiness is strongly linked to other lignification characters, explaining why mechanical stem reinforcement is indirectly related to increased embolism resistance.ConclusionsThe woodier or more lignified accessions are more resistant to embolism than the herbaceous accessions, confirming the link between increased stem lignification and increased embolism resistance, as also observed in other lineages. Intervessel pit membrane thickness and, to a lesser extent, theoretical vessel implosion resistance and vessel wall thickness are the missing functional links between stem lignification and embolism resistance.

A method of measuring the water potential of stored potato tubers (Solanum tuberosum L.) was needed to investigate the relationship of bacterial soft rot in tubers to water potential. Pressure chamber measurements, while useful for tubers with functional stolons, cannot be made on stored tubers. Measurements could be made on excised tissue pieces in a hygrometer chamber and with hygrometers implanted into tubers. We report here our evaluation of these hygrometric methods using a comparison with the pressure chamber on tubers harvested with stolons intact.

In tubers of high water potential, measurements on excised tissue were as much as 0.5 megapascals lower than the pressure chamber, probably due to turgor-driven expansion of the sample when freed from constraints imposed by surrounding tissue. Good agreement (±0.05 megapascals) was found between the implanted hygrometer and the pressure chamber at potentials higher than −0.5 megapascals. At lower water potentials, both hygrometer measurements were higher than the pressure chamber. Respirational heating of the tissue contributed to the increase in the excised tissue samples, but not with the implanted hygrometers because of the hygrometer design. The osmotic pressure balanced the pressure chamber measurement of potential at −0.7 megapascals, but was too small to do so at lower potentials. At most, 25% of this discrepancy can be accounted for by dilution by apoplastic water. We believe that the pressure chamber measurement is too low at low water potentials and that the error is associated with air bubbles in the xylem. At low potentials air emerged from xylem vessels along with sap, and fewer xylem emitted sap as potentials decreased.

Air-embolism formation in xylem vessels of Populus tremuloidesMichx. was quantified by its reduction of hydraulic conductivityin branch segments. Embolism was induced by increasing xylemtension in drying stems, or by inserting one end of a hydratedstem in a pressure bomb and increasing air pressure in the bomb. Both treatments produced the same response suggesting that embolismby water stress was caused by air entering water-filled vessels, presumably through inter-vessel pits. In rapidly-growing P.tremuloides branches, the vessels of the outer growth ring werefunctional whereas vessels in older xylem were mostly embolized. This selective embolizing of older vessels was associated witha marked increase in permeability of their inter-vessel pitsto air, relative to pits of younger vessels. Air-injection pressuresless than 1·0 MPa completely embolized older vesselsthat had been re-filled in the laboratory, whereas pressuresover 4·0 MPa were required to embolize young vessels.Greater permeability of old vessels was due to degradation oftheir pit membranes as seen in the scanning electron microscope;large openings were present that were not seen in pit membranesof young vessels. These holes would allow air to penetrate vesselends at low pressure differences causing embolism. Degradationof pit membranes causing the selective dysfunction of oldersapwood may be a general phenomenon initiating heartwood formationin many species. The water relations of maize (Zea mays L. cv Helix) were documented in terms of hydraulic architecture and xylem pressure. A high-pressure flowmeter was used to characterize the hydraulic resistances of the root, stalk, and leaves. Xylem pressure measurements were made with a Scholander-Hammel pressure bomb and with a cell pressure probe. Evaporation rates were measured by gas exchange and by gravimetric measurements. Xylem pressure was altered by changing the light intensity, by controlling irrigation, or by gas pressure applied to the soil mass (using a root pressure bomb). Xylem pressure measured by the cell pressure probe and by the pressure bomb agreed over the entire measured range of 0 to −0.7 MPa. Experiments were consistent with the cohesion-tension theory. Xylem pressure changed rapidly and reversibly with changes in light intensity and root-bomb pressure. Increasing the root-bomb pressure increased the evaporation rate slightly when xylem pressure was negative and increased water flow rate through the shoots dramatically when xylem pressure was positive and guttation was observed. The hydraulic architecture model could predict all observed changes in water flow rate and xylem. We measured the cavitation threshold for oil- and water-filled pressure probes and provide some suggestions for improvement.

Hydraulic traits were studied in temperate, woody evergreens in a high-elevation heath community to test for trade-offs between the delivery of water to canopies at rates sufficient to sustain photosynthesis and protection against disruption to vascular transport caused by freeze-thaw-induced embolism. Freeze-thaw-induced loss in hydraulic conductivity was studied in relation to xylem anatomy, leaf- and sapwood-specific hydraulic conductivity and gas exchange characteristics of leaves. We found evidence that a trade-off between xylem transport capacity and safety from freeze-thaw-induced embolism affects photosynthetic activity in overwintering evergreens. The mean hydraulically weighted xylem vessel diameter and sapwood-specific conductivity correlated with susceptibility to freeze-thaw-induced embolism. There was also a strong correlation of hydraulic supply and demand across species; interspecific differences in stomatal conductance and CO(2) assimilation rates were correlated linearly with sapwood- and leaf-specific hydraulic conductivity. Xylem vessel anatomy mediated an apparent trade-off between resistance to freeze-thaw-induced embolism and hydraulic and photosynthetic capacity during the winter. These results point to a new role for xylem functional traits in determining the degree to which species can maintain photosynthetic carbon gain despite freezing events and cold winter temperatures.
