Species interactions, such as interspecific competition, determine population dynamics and community structure. In a park of Amami Oshima Island, Japan, two field cricket species Teleogryllus occipitalis (Audinet‐Serville) (Gryllidae) and Loxoblemmus equestris Saussure (Gryllidae) are dominant species. We examined the interference competition at the nymph and adult stages in the two crickets under controlled laboratory conditions. Survival and emergence rates of T. occipitalis were not affected by the density of L. equestris, whereas survival and emergence rates of L. equestris decreased as the density of T. occipitalis increased. These results showed that T. occipitalis was competitively superior over L. equestris in species interactions. We discuss inconsistency between the results and coexistence of these two species under field conditions.  相似文献

The experiment was carried out in order to analyze the results of interspecific competition which were mentioned in the previous reports (Sasaba 1964, 1965). The following definite tendencies were obtained and an account was given with regard to the process of competition. (1)T. minutum had a higher reproductive rate than T. japonicum at a lower density of the parent wasps. (2) The parasitic efficiency of T. minutum was high as compared with T. japonicum. (3)T. japonicum was consistently superior to T. minutum in the interspecific competition at larval stage.  相似文献

Summary House Finches (Carpodacus mexicanus), natives of western North America, have expanded their range in the eastern United States since their 1940 release in New York City. Range and the relation of House Finch population growth to the population dynamics of House Sparrows (Passer domesticus) and Purple Finches (Carpodacus purpureus) were examined, using data from the Breeding Bird Survey and the Christmas Bird Count. The House Finch population grew exponentially throughout its eastern range. Significant negative relationships in population density, relative to spatial and temporal control populations, were found between House Finches and House Sparrows in summer and winter, and between House Finches and Purple Finches in summer. Purple Finch and House Sparrow populations outside of the House Finch range appeared to have no effect on each other throughout the study. Neither changes in 74 weather variables, nor changes in forest, field or developed habitat explained the observed trends in population density. The results indicate that House Finches compete with these two species, but winter migration complicates the picture.  相似文献

Previous studies have demonstrated a species replacement sequence in disturbed forest and heathland, with the native New Holland mouse (Pseudomys novaehollandiae) replacing the introduced house mouse (Mus musculus) in the earliest part of the succession. The replacement appeared to be competitive displacement and this has been confirmed by controlled experimental removal of P. novaehollandiae from field sites, which produced significant increases in the abundance and habitat use of Mus musculus. This paper reports the results of the controlled reciprocal manipulation experiment in the field. A pulsed addition of M. musculus to three treatment plots produced significant reductions in the abundance and habitat use of P. novaehollandiae, when compared with control plots with no addition of M. musculus. This effect was observed only at high M. musculus densities, and the return to the control conditions within 3 months of the pulsed addition is consistent with asymmetric interspecific competition from competitively superior P. novaehollandiae. The importance of considering the regional abundance of M. musculus in relation to its competitive ability is stressed, as at high densities M. musculus is able to create its own ecological space contrary to its more usual competitively submissive status.  相似文献

Summary Glasshouse competition experiments with Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle indicate that plants grown from turions are weaker competitors than those grown from tubers, when compared to the widely distributed macrophyte, Potamogeton pectinatus L. These results support an earlier hypothesis about the importance of propagule size for predicting the outcome of plant competition (Grace 1985; Schaffer and Gadgil 1980). Results of outdoor growth experiments indicate that even though Hydrilla plants from turions are relatively weaker competitors, they are able to grow succesfully in an existing macrophyte bed composed of either, P. pectinatus or P. gramineus. During the early stages of Hydrilla invasion into an area of existing macrophytes, native plants may coexist with Hydrilla. However, once the abundance of Hydrilla tubers in the sediment increases, Hydrilla may displace existing plants.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.
  • 1 Removal field experiments and observational studies have been undertaken to determine whether feeding by cinnabar moth Tyria jacobaeae L. on the flower heads of ragwort Senecio jacobaea L. affects the abundance of the fly Pegohylemyia seneciella (Meade) that feeds in the flower heads as a larva.
  • 2 Correlations between the population density of cinnabar moth and the population density of the fly were suggestive of habitat separation, but provided little evidence of exploitation competition.
  • 3 Removal of cinnabar moth by hand from replicated plots over two years shows that, in years when ragwort flower production is consumed by cinnabar moth caterpillars, the fly may show no recruitment at all.
  • 4 Fly populations persist in refugia, exploiting ragwort plants that grow in areas where there are no cinnabar moth.
  • 5 Recruitment of ragwort is not seed limited, so the reduction in seed production caused by P. seneciella (maximum about 30%) has no impact on ragwort abundance, or on the abundance of cinnabar moth.
  • 6 We conclude that there is strong interspecific competition between these two species, and that the competition is highly asymmetric. The cinnabar moth had a substantial effect on the recruitment of the fly in 1986, but the fly has no measurable impact on the recruitment of the moth. In six years out of seven in our long-term study, cinnabar moth reduced flower production to levels comparable to those measured in 1986, and we infer that strong competition with the fly was likely in six years out of seven.
  • 7 One reason why there are so few published examples of asymmetric interspecific competition may be simply that the experiments are thought too obvious to be worth doing. We argue that this is not a good reason for eschewing manipulative field experiments, and that few processes in ecology are at all obvious when investigated in detail.

The role of interspecific competition in shaping animal and plant communities has formed one of the major issues in ecology for decades. Small mammals, mainly rodents, have been among the model systems used for research on interspecific competition. Most studies within small mammal systems in the past have examined effects of competition on population attributes such as on population size, habitat use, or population dynamics. Population-level responses are the cumulative effects of individual responses, however, the influence of competition on individual life-history traits has rarely been studied. Research on life-histories may bridge gaps between population biology and effects of competition on individual behaviour. In this paper, we review recent research approaches to interspecific competition in rodents based on census data and species assemblages, that use regression analysis, time series analysis, removal and exclusion experiments, and showcase our own experimental research on the effects of interspecific competition on individual life-history traits in boreal voles.  相似文献

Mosquito larvae of the sibling species Anopheles arabiensis Patton and An. gambiae Giles sensu stricto (Diptera: Culicidae) were investigated for interspecific competition. Single-species and mixed-species populations were reared at 27 degrees C from the first instar to pupation at different densities (100, 200 or 400 larvae/200 cm2 tray) with a constant amount of food, 0.2 mg/larva/day. Pupae obtained from mixed populations were identified to species using PCR. Both species had a 1:1 sex ratio at pupation. Development time to pupation averaged about one day less for An. arabiensis compared to An. gambiae, ranging from 0.93-1.49d for males and from 0.44-0.84 d for females in single populations. In mixed species populations the difference for males ranged from 0.99-1.58d and for females from 0.93-1.62d. Survival rates of An. gambiae s.s. were significantly higher than those of An. arabiensis in both the single-species and mixed-species populations. Mixed-species rearing did not have an effect on the survival of An. gambiae, whereas the mortality rate of An. arabiensis was significantly higher in mixed populations than when only this species was reared at the same densities, suggesting a competitive disadvantage for An. arabiensis in mixed populations. High proportions of larvae (4-35%) were lost during development; these losses could not be accounted for by corpses found in the rearing pans. The possibility of cannibalism was investigated by rearing each species separately in small containers (five per 50 ml), inspected every 6h, but no cannibalism was detected at any stage of development in either species. It was concluded that, under these experimental circumstances, interspecific competition between both species did occur but with a detrimental effect on An. arabiensis only. Relevance of these findings to the ecology of both species in the field is discussed briefly.  相似文献

We studied the interpecific competition between 2 species of predatory aquatic bugs, Diplonychus japonicus and D. major by conducting a field experiment. We set up 3 types of experimental plots in the paddy fields where D. major predominated. The two plots contained single species of either D. japonicus or D. major, respectively, and one plot had both species in equal number. We compared the development and the reproductive performance between plots in each species. In D. japonicus, the number of eggs and early instar nymphs were significantly smaller in the plots containing both species than in the monospecific plots. However, the numbers of late instar nymphs and newly emerged adults were not significantly different between plots. The proportions of starved nymphs in both plots were larger than those in the D. japonicus's natural habitats. The final densities of adults in both plots were lower than those in the natural habitats. These results suggest that lower density of D. japonicus in these paddy fields is due to the lack of available food for nymphs rather than the effects of interspecific competition with D. major. In D. major, significant differences were not found in the number of eggs, each instar nymphs and adults. These results suggest that the effects of interspecific competition did not affect the reproductive performance of D. major.  相似文献

Often a screening or selection experiment targets a cell or tissue, which presents many possible molecular targets and identifies a correspondingly large number of ligands. We describe a statistical method to extract an estimate of the complexity or richness of the set of molecular targets from competition experiments between distinguishable ligands, including aptamers derived from combinatorial experiments (SELEX or phage display). In simulations, the non-parametric statistic provides a robust estimate of complexity from a 100 ×100 matrix of competition experiments, which is clearly feasible in high-throughput format. The statistic and method are potentially applicable to other ligand binding situations.  相似文献

Two naturalized dandelions,Taraxacum officinale andTaraxacum laevigatum, were grown in mixed stands at various plant densities and mixing ratios with various levels of fertilizer supply until seeds were produced. The effect of fertilizer supply on the competitive relationship for seed production between the species was analyzed. In pure stands, the simultaneous effects of plant density and fertilizer supply on mean plant weight were formulated for each species. By introducing the density conversion factor, the results of plant weight growth in mixed stands were formulated successfully.T. laevigatum produced more seeds thanT. officinale at the same plant weight. The relationship between mean plant weight and mean number of mature seeds produced per plant was also formulated for each species. Ratio diagrams were predicted with these formulas. The density conversion factors showed thatT. officinale was always dominant overT. laevigatum for plant weight growth within a generation. The ratio diagrams showed thatT. officinale became dominant overT. laevigatum for seed production with repeating generations at higher levels of fertilizer supply, but that the species with a larger ratio of plant density became dominant over the other species at lower levels of fertilizer supply.  相似文献

Multiple parasitism of Helicoverpa zea (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) had differential effects on the gregarious endoparasitoids Eucelatoria bryani and E. rubentis (Diptera: Tachinidae). Both species were able to survive in multiparasitized hosts. However while the survival of E. bryani was not affected by the presence of E. rubentis, E. rubentis survival was reduced when competing with 24-h older E. bryani. The presence of E. rubentis did not result in a decrease in the size of E. bryani except when E. rubentis was 24-h older than E. bryani. The presence of E. bryani tended to result in smaller E. rubentis. The presence of similarly aged heterospecific competitors often resulted in prolonged development time for both species. Naïve females did not alter oviposition between unparasitized and heterospecifically parasitized fifth-instar larvae of H. zea, either by ovipositing less frequently in parasitized hosts than unparasitized ones, or by reducing clutch size in parasitized hosts. These results indicate that in H. zea, E. bryani is a superior competitor compared with E. rubentis. These factors should be considered in evaluating the potential of E. bryani and E. rubentis as biological control agents of H. zea.  相似文献

Competitive interactions often play an important role in local community structure, and particularly so in ant communities. We test predictions derived from a competition model proposed for Scandinavian ant communities by comparing ant nest densities inside and outside fifty randomly-selected territories of competitively dominant wood ants within 30 km of Ume?, northern Sweden. As predicted by the model, competitively-intermediate encounter species, as well as other territorial species, showed complementary occurrences with both studied wood ants, Formica aquilonia Yarrow and F. lugubris Zett.. In contrast, complementary abundances, i.e. lower density of competitively-inferior submissive species in the presence of wood ants, as predicted by the model, was not supported for all submissive species. Of the two studied wood ant species, the nest density of submissive species was negatively correlated only with F. aquilonia. Submissives as a group, as well as Myrmica-species, showed complementary abundances with F. aquilonia, but one Leptothorax and two Serviformica species had higher nest densities in the presence of this competitively-dominant species. We propose that, for Leptothorax, these deviations from the model predictions may be because of limited niche overlap with dominant wood ants, a small worker force and a timid behaviour which does not elicit aggression in wood ants. For the two Serviformica species, we propose a combination of protection against social parasites, inter-specific social control performed by F. aquilonia, and dominance relationships between competitively-inferior submissive species as reasons for the higher nest density inside F. aquilonia territories. Monogyny, and thereby smaller nests, lower worker force, smaller territory (as shown by this study) in F. lugubris, as compared to the polygyny in F. aquilonia, may also help explain the differences in their effects on subordinate species. Our analyses indicate that the linear competition hierarchy model proposed for Scandinavian ants accurately predicts the outcome of interaction between and community composition for dominant territorial and encounter species, but that it needs refinement with respect to the relationship between territorial and submissive species and the resulting community composition. Further studies are needed, especially addressing the complex relationships between these latter groups, and the effects of different competitively-dominant wood ants, to determine the mechanisms determining the outcome of these relationships and to more accurately predict community composition. Summary The classification of interspecific interactions can have an important impact on ecologists' world views. Previous classifications have often been incomplete, have suffered from ambiguously defined categories, and/or have wrongly equated categories of population level effects with particular mechanisms of interaction. I use several simple mathematical models to argue that effects on short-term population growth rate, long term population size, and short term relative fitness of interactants may differ qualitatively. Equating all (--) effects with competition and all (+-) effects with predation may have caused ecologists to ignore a variety of potentially important interaction mechanisms. Failure to define the type of effect used in classifying interactions has led to confusion about the nature of interactions; several controversies regarding competition have apparently been caused or exaccerbated by problems with definition or clasification. In applying classification schemes, ecologists should realize that the classification of an interaction between two populations may change with the sizes of those populations or of other populations with which they interact.  相似文献

By means of single and mixed inoculation, this paper studied the interspecific competition between T. confusum and T. pretiosum on the factitious eggs of Corcyra cephaloica under different parasitoid densities, host densities and inoculated spaces. The results showed that for both singly and mixed inoculated groups, the parasitism increased with parasitoid density but decreased with host density, whereas the percentage of female progeny dropped with parasitoid density but enhanced with host density. No significant effect was observed on adult emergence for all parasitoid and host density treatments. In mixed inoculated group, the proportion of T. pretiosum in the progeny decreased with parasitoid density but increased with host density, and was more than 50% in all treatments, indicating that T. pretiosum had a stronger competitive ability than T. confusum. In the spaces ranging from 4cm^3 to 102cm^3, the parasitism decreased gradually in both singly and mixed inoculated groups. The percentage of female progeny and adult emergence had no significant difference among different inoculated spaces. In mixed inoculated group, the proportion of T. pretiosum in the progeny was more than 50% in all treatments except space 102 cm3, but decreased with space, which suggested that T. confusum could improve their competitive ability through increasing their search areas and looking for more hosts.  相似文献

Density and composition of benthic invertebrates and the diet of brown trout Salmo trutta and Alpine bullhead Cottus poecilopus were studied at two sites in one Norwegian stream. The sites were separated by an impassable waterfall, and brown trout density was five to 10 times higher at the upper, allopatric site than downstream where it lived in sympatry with the Alpine bullhead. Benthic invertebrate communities did not differ between sites; however, the size distribution of chironomids and trichopterans were skewed towards lighter individuals at the sympatric site. Diet composition suggested that sympatric brown trout foraged more on invertebrate drift and from the surface than allopatric brown trout. Alpine bullhead diet did not differ significantly from brown trout diet, except that the Alpine bullhead fed on heavier individual prey within a few taxa and did not consume chironomid pupae or surface insects. The collected data support the hypothesis that brown trout living in sympatry with Alpine bullhead feed at locations with higher predation risk, which is a probable explanation for their lower population density.  相似文献

(E)-2,7-Octadienyl acetate and (E)-2-octenyl acetate (1:10 by volume) were identified as a pheromone attractive to both sexes of the lygaeid bug, Tropidothorax cruciger. In a parallel investigation of Neacoryphus bicrucis (Lygaeidae), (E,E)-2,4-hexadienyl acetate and phenethyl acetate (≈9:1) were identified from males, and found attractive to both sexes of adults in the field plus a tachinid fly parasitoid of the bugs. In N. bicrucis, the pheromone was clearly shown to come from the tubular accessory glands of the metathoracic scent gland; this evidence, plus earlier literature reports for other species, indicate that male lygaeids are the pheromone emitters. In another lygaeid, Oncopeltus fasciatus, 2-isobutyl-3-methoxypyrazine was identified in the cardiac glycoside-laden fluid sequestered from milkweed hosts and expelled by these bugs when they are attacked. Alkyl methoxypyrazines are warning odorants associated with poisonous insect secretions, and their presence in O. fasciatus indicates that the plant-derived chemical defense of lygaeines is more elaborate than previously appreciated.  相似文献
