Over the last decade there has been a significant improvement in understanding how to design, operate and scale-up solid-state fermentation bioreactors. The key to these advances has been the application of mathematical modeling techniques to describe the biological and transport phenomena within the system. This review focuses on the advances in understanding that have come from this modeling work, and the insights it has given us into bioreactor design, operation and scale-up. It also highlights two promising bioreactor designs that have emerged over the last decade or so. For processes in which the substrate bed must remain static throughout the fermentation, the most promising design is the Zymotis design of ORSTOM at Montpellier, France, which involves closely spaced internal heat transfer plates within a packed-bed bioreactor. For those processes in which mixing can be tolerated, the stirred bioreactor developed at INRA, in Dijon, France, has been successfully demonstrated at scales of 1–25 t of substrate. Theoretical work suggests that mathematical models will be useful tools in the scale-up process, however, there are no reports that they have been used in the development of any current large-scale process. Rather, the models have been validated against data obtained from laboratory-scale bioreactors. There is an urgent need to test the accuracy and robustness of the models by applying them within real process development.  相似文献

The evolutionary and biological significance of a female-biased sex ratio within apicomplexan parasites has been the subject of much discussion. It is proposed that the sex allocation theory, as applied to inbreeding populations, can explain the sex ratios observed for this diverse group of parasites. This is based on a mathematical model, which assumes that the majority of microgametes will succeed in fertilizing macrogametes. Is this a realistic assumption? It is possible, for different reasons, that the theory may not to be applicable to either malaria parasites or Toxoplasma gondii.  相似文献

In any control system for which the number of independent controls is smaller than the number of degrees of freedom to be controlled, our choice of control in any state is restricted to a submanifold of smaller dimension than the tangent space. This simple fact has a number of important consequences for questions of biological import; we consider its implications for adaptation, for senescent phenomena and for the determination of tertiary structures of polypeptides through control of certain average properties. We also formulate the Pontryagin Maximum Principle of Optimal control theory in such a way as to inquire whether specific biodynamic systems can be regarded as optimal with respect to rate of accumulation of particular quantities of the system. We find that if this is possible, the quantity in question must play the role of a clock.  相似文献

This fact is based upon "Gate-control" theory of Melzack and Wall.

Presentation of the hypothesis

Syringe Micro Vibrator is a new design being introduced for the first time in the field of Dentistry. This device is a promising breakthrough in pain and anxiety management and may deliver solution for clinicians plagued with patient pain phobia. It has an off-set rotating micro vibration creator with ultra high frequency and ultra low altitude that can be easily placed on any standard dental syringe and some disposable syringes. This device was registered as an invention in dentistry and received Iran National Patent number of 63765.

Testing the hypothesis

By creating micro vibration, this device would be effective in reducing the pain and anxiety confronted with most types of intraoral injections as palatal, mandibular block, intraligamental and local infiltration. From the aspect of the patient pain management, this device contributes both physiologically (based on Gate Control Theory of pain) and psychologically (based on the device function as will be explained by dentist to the patient as a modern pain reducing technology). From the aspect of clinician, SMV motor provides vibrations with ultra high frequency to alleviate pain, but since it has ultra low vibration altitude, it has no adverse effect on the clinician dexterity and accuracy during injection and it does not interfere with pin point localization of injection site.

Implications of the hypothesis

Upon mounting on a conventional dental anesthesia injection syringe, SMV is switched on and the clinician then uses normal injection technique to administer the anesthetic. This device is not only a useful accessory device for ordinary patients, but also more useful for pediatric patients and those who have a phobia of intraoral injection or pain.  相似文献

Many ecological systems experience periodic variability. Theoretical investigation of population and community dynamics in periodic environments has been hampered by the lack of mathematical tools relative to equilibrium systems. Here, I describe one such mathematical tool that has been rarely used in the ecological literature but has widespread use: Floquet theory. Floquet theory is the study of the stability of linear periodic systems in continuous time. Floquet exponents/multipliers are analogous to the eigenvalues of Jacobian matrices of equilibrium points. In this paper, I describe the general theory, then give examples to illustrate some of its uses: it defines fitness of structured populations, it can be used for invasion criteria in models of competition, and it can test the stability of limit cycle solutions. I also provide computer code to calculate Floquet exponents and multipliers. To invest effort into any cognitive task, people must be sufficiently motivated. Whereas prior research has focused primarily on how the cognitive control required to complete these tasks is motivated by the potential rewards for success, it is also known that control investment can be equally motivated by the potential negative consequence for failure. Previous theoretical and experimental work has yet to examine how positive and negative incentives differentially influence the manner and intensity with which people allocate control. Here, we develop and test a normative model of control allocation under conditions of varying positive and negative performance incentives. Our model predicts, and our empirical findings confirm, that rewards for success and punishment for failure should differentially influence adjustments to the evidence accumulation rate versus response threshold, respectively. This dissociation further enabled us to infer how motivated a given person was by the consequences of success versus failure.  相似文献

Aim The majority of studies concerning positive interspecific abundance–occupancy relationships have used broad‐scale and microcosm data to test the occurrence and correlates of the relationship to determine which of the proposed mechanisms give rise to it. It has been argued recently that studying the residual variation about abundance–occupancy relationships is a more logical analysis and may yield faster progress in identifying the relative roles of the mechanisms. However, to date this approach has been largely unsuccessful. Here we test if fundamental species traits such as the status (native and introduced), habitat and trophic group of mammal and bird species may explain any of the residual variation about their respective abundance–occupancy relationships. Location The study used British mammal and bird species. Methods We tested if species traits explained any of the variation about abundance–occupancy relationships using linear regression techniques both treating species as independent data points for analysis and controlling for phylogenetic association. Results None of the species traits could explain any residual variation about the positive interspecific abundance–occupancy relationships of British mammals and birds. This applied both when treating species as independent data points and after controlling for phylogenetic association. Conclusions Given the lack of explanatory power of the species traits here and in other studies using this approach it seems that the variation about positive interspecific abundance–occupancy relationships is not explicable in a simple fashion. Predicting the likely influence of traits that are independent of phylogeny is also problematic. Therefore, the general utility of this approach and its future role in understanding the mechanisms causing positive interspecific abundance–occupancy relationships is doubtful.  相似文献

At any given moment in time a plant is partitioning total growth mass into its various component parts such as leaves, roots, reproductive material, etc. The view is taken that the plant has evolved a life history strategy to control this partitioning process. This paper illustrates the utility of optimal control theory for use in determining life history strategies which maximize fitness for a given asexual plant model. The optimal control methods are first used on a model previously analyzed by Professor Dan Cohen, who used a different method. His results of a change from 100% vegetable growth to 100% reproductive growth at a fixed switching time is again obtained. This 100% switching result is shown to be more generally applicable by using a qualitatively described model. However the switching time in general is shown to be a function of both leaf mass and time remaining to the end of the growing season. The allocation to toxin production is also considered. It is shown that under this model an inequality between system parameters must be satisfied before the plant should allocate growth to toxin production. Although the particular model explored here may rarely be realistic in nature, these same methods of optimal control theory can be applied in a similar fashion to many other proposed models of plant resource allocation.  相似文献

Archaeology's main contribution to the debate over the origins of modern humans has been investigating where and when modern human behavior is first recognized in the archaeological record. Most of this debate has been over the empirical record for the appearance and distribution of a set of traits that have come to be accepted as indicators of behavioral modernity. This debate has resulted in a series of competing models that we explicate here, and the traits are typically used as the test implications for these models. However, adequate tests of hypotheses and models rest on robust test implications, and we argue here that the current set of test implications suffers from three main problems: (1) Many are empirically derived from and context-specific to the richer European record, rendering them problematic for use in the primarily tropical and subtropical African continent. (2) They are ambiguous because other processes can be invoked, often with greater parsimony, to explain their character. (3) Many lack theoretical justification. In addition, there are severe taphonomic problems in the application of these test implications across differing spans of time. To provide adequate tests of these models, archaeologists must first subject these test implications to rigorous discussion, which is initiated here.  相似文献

It is fairly well known that Darwin was inspired to formulate his theory of natural selection by reading Thomas Malthus’s Essay on the Principle of Population. In fact, by reading Darwin’s notebooks, we can even locate one particular sentence which started Darwin thinking about population and selection. What has not been done before is to explain exactly where this sentence – essentially Malthus’s ideas about geometric population growth – came from. In this essay we show that eighteenth century mathematician Leonhard Euler is responsible for this sentence, and in fact forms the beginning of the logical chain which leads to the creation of the theory of natural selection. We shall examine the fascinating path taken by a mathematical calculation, the many different lenses through which it was viewed, and the path through which it eventually influenced Darwin.  相似文献

In spite of the considerable effort which has been invested in attempts to understand the mechanism of human spines, substantial controversy remains, particularly in connection with assumptions which have to be made by those engaged in biological modelling.The hypothesis presented here is that the living joint has stress sensors driving a feedback mechanism, an arrangement which could react to imposed loads by modifying muscular action in such a way as to minimize stress at the joints and therefore the risk of injury. A theory of this kind gives an image of the spine not in terms of a spatial picture, as would a CAT scan, but in terms of stresses, forces and moments acting at the intervertebral joints. Calculations show that the erectores spinae alone cannot support more than about 50 kg; there must be some other mechanism to explain man's ability substantially to exceed that load.It is suggested that the interaction between the erectores spinae and the abdominals are of fundamental importance in the function of the spine; how they are co-ordinated during the lifting of weights is examined in detail. The theory resulting from this hypothesis is used to relate spinal injury and an injured subject's posture and behaviour.A mathematical formulation permits an objective evaluation of the spine, and a procedure for determining an automatic diagnosis of lumbar spine disabilities is proposed.  相似文献

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology evaluates holistically the environmental consequences of a product system or activity, by quantifying the energy and materials used, the wastes released to the environment, and assessing the environmental impacts of those energy, materials and wastes. Despite the international focus on environmental impact and LCA, the quality of the underlying life cycle inventory data is at least as, if not more, important than the more qualitative LCA process. This work presents an option to generate gate-to-gate life cycle information of chemical substances, based on a transparent methodology of chemical engineering process design (an ab initio approach). In the broader concept of a Life Cycle Inventory (LCI), the information of each gate-to-gate module can be linked accordingly in a production chain, including the extraction of raw materials, transportation, disposal, reuse, etc. to provide a full cradle to gate evaluation. The goal of this article is to explain the methodology rather than to provide a tutorial on the techniques used. This methodology aims to help the LCA practitioner to obtain a fair and transparent estimate of LCI data when the information is not readily available from industry or literature. Results of gate-to-gate life cycle information generated using the cited methodology are presented as a case study. It has been our experience that both LCI and LCA information provide valuable means of understanding the net environmental consequence of any technology. The LCI information from this methodology can be used more directly in exploring engineering and chemistry changes to improve manufacturing processes. The LCA information can be used to set broader policy and to look at more macro improvements for the environment.  相似文献

This paper concerns the use of tracking studies to test a theoretical account of the information processing performed by the human CNS during control of movement. The theory provides a bridge between studies of reaction time and continuous tracking. It is proposed that the human CNS includes neuronal circuitry to compute inverse internal models of the multiple input, multiple output, dynamic, nonlinear relationships between outgoing motor commands and their resulting perceptual consequences. The inverse internal models are employed during movement execution to transform preplanned trajectories of desired perceptual consequences into appropriate outgoing motor commands to achieve them. A finite interval of time is required by the CNS to preplan the desired perceptual consequences of a movement and it does not commence planning a new movement until planning of the old one has been completed. This behavior introduces intermittency into the planning of movements. In this paper we show that the gain and phase frequency response characteristics of the human operator in a visual pursuit tracking task can be derived theoretically from these assumptions. By incorporating the effects of internal model inaccuracy and of speed-accuracy trade-off in performance, it is shown that various aspects of experimentally measured tracking behavior can be accounted for.  相似文献

This essay explores two strategies of inquiryin ecological science. Ecologists may regardthe sites they study either as contingentcollections of plants and animals, therelations of which are place-specific andidiosyncratic, or as structured systems andcommunites that are governed by general rules,forces, or principles. Ecologists who take thefirst approach rely on observation, induction,and experiment – a case-study or historicalmethod – to determine the causes of particularevents. Ecologists who take the secondapproach, seeking to explain by inferringevents from general patterns or principles,confront four conceptual obstacles which thisessay describes. Theory in ecology must (1)define and classify the object it studies,e.g., the ecosystem, and thus determine theconditions under which it remains the ``same'system through time and change. Ecologistsmust (2) find ways to reject as well as tocreate mathematical models of the ecosystem,possibly by (3) identifying efficient causes ofecosystem organization or design. Finally,ecologists will (4) show ecological theory canhelp solve environmental problems both inpristine and in human-dominated systems. Afailure to solve – or even to address – theseobstacles suggests that theoretical ecology maybecome a formal science that studies themathematical consequences of assumptionswithout regard to the relation of theseassumptions to the world.  相似文献

Traditionally, Gouy-Chapman theory has been used to calculate the distribution of ions in the diffuse layer next to a charged surface. In recent years, the same theory has found application to adsorption (incorporation, partitioning) of charged peptides, hormones, or drugs at the membrane-water interface. Empirically it has been found that an effective charge, smaller than the physical charge, must often be used in the Gouy-Chapman formula. In addition, the large size of these molecules can be expected to influence their adsorption isotherms. To improve evaluation techniques for such experiments, comparatively simple extensions of the standard Gouy-Chapman formalism have been studied which are based on a discrete charge virial expansion. The model allows for the mobility of charged groups at the interface. It accounts for finite size of the adsorbed macromolecules and for discrete charge effects arising from pair interactions in the interface plane. In contrast to previous discrete charge treatments this model nearly coincides with the Gouy-Chapman formalism in the case where the adsorbing molecules are univalent. Large discrepancies are found for multivalent molecules. This could explain the reduced effective charges needed in the standard Gouy-Chapman treatment. The reduction factor can be predicted. The model is mainly limited to low surface coverage, typical for the adsorption studies in question.  相似文献

A fundamental concept in computer science is that of the universal Turing machine, which is an abstract definition of a general purpose computer. A general purpose (universal) computer is defined as one which can compute anything that is computable. It has been shown that any computer which is able to simulate Boolean logic circuits of any complexity is such a general purpose computer. The field of DNA computing was founded in 1994 by Adleman's solution of a 7-bit instance of the Hamiltonian path problem. This work, as well as most of the subsequent experimental and theoretical investigations in the area, focused primarily upon the solution of NP-complete problems, which are a subset of the larger universal class of problems. In the present work a surface DNA computer capable of simulating Boolean logic circuits is demonstrated. This was done by constructing NOR and OR gates and combining them into a simple logic circuit. The NOR gate is one of the universal gates in Boolean logic, meaning that any other logic gate can be built from it alone. The circuit was solved using DNA-based operations, demonstrating the universal nature of this surface DNA computing model.  相似文献

Whenever we stand upright in apparent static equilibrium, we are, in fact, continuously making minor adjustments in order to maintain our balance. For each intervertebral joint, a point must exist at which all moments applied to the joint are continually and dynamically balanced. This point, known as the centre of reaction, is a mathematical invention necessary to perform analyses of spinal motion, but which need not be associated with any real anatomical structure.As the spine flexes and extends, this centre is expected to move; where it moves and the rationale for its motion is worthy of enquiry. In this paper, we propose that the centre of reaction remains confined to the nucleus of the disc, but only if one simple but crucial assumption is made; that the motion of the spine and control of its musculature maintain a minimum and equal stress at each intervertebral joint. This is a simple hypothesis which imposes a very specific relationship between lordosis and the centre of reaction. We investigate this relationship and its consequences on the teaching of lifting.The impossibility of designing experiments adequately to verify this hypothesis prevents in vivo verification, and, therefore, the model's verification must be made through the inferred consequences. For example, the capability of correctly predicting physiological responses of the musculoskeletal system is an indication of the validity of a model; however, this is not universally accepted. In this particular case, additional experimental data are available in the form of the locus of the centre of rotation of a vertebra vis-à-vis its lower neighbour as the spine flexes and extends.It is instructive to compare the predicted locus of the centre of reaction to experimentally determined locus of the centre of rotation; more than just coincidental similarities are found.  相似文献
