The fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, appears to deviate from the usual age-related pattern of defensive behavior seen in other social insects; instead of older workers being more defensive than younger ones, they are less so. Here I test this pattern by quantifying changes in the defensive stinging behavior of S. invicta workers of known age. I found defensiveness, measured as both the number of stings delivered and the amount of venom delivered per sting (venom dose), to increase with age initially but then decline after a mid-age peak. This hump-shaped ontogeny may be the result of S. invicta's foraging strategy, which effectively shifts the responsibility of nest defense to workers younger than foraging age. It is S. invicta's mid-aged workers that are the most defensive, probably because they are both physiologically and spatially the most suitable nest defenders.  相似文献

Chemicals from the venom gland elicited alarm behaviour and attack in the Asian polistine wasp Polybioides raphigastra. When presented with crushed venom glands workers of this wasp respond with a mass stinging attack. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analyses show that the major volatiles in the venom gland are alkanes, monounsaturated alkenes and 2-alcohols. Several pyrazines, a spiroacetal and aromatics were also identified as trace compounds. The anatomy and morphology of the sting apparatus are reported, and we describe sting autotomy in this wasp. This is the first such report for the Ropalidiinae. The structures responsible for autotomy are likely to be large barbs present on the sting lancets, and a conspicuous tooth present on the medial side of the left lancet. Sting autotomy in P. raphigastra probably plays an important role in the localization of sites of attack by wasps defending the nest.  相似文献

We studied the hunting behaviour of Myrmicaria opaciventris (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in order to evaluate if it can be used as a biological control agent against the termites that damage sugarcane plantations. Hunting workers foraged in groups and recruited nestmates at short-range when they encountered large termite soldiers or groups of small termite workers. Differences in prey capture concerned the: (1) means of detection (from a distance or by contact); (2) termite body part seized (small termites seized by the body; large termites by an appendage); (3) percentages of prey abandoned; and (4) use of venom. The sting of the workers is spatulated implying a topical application of the venom on the prey. Large termites were stretched by several workers whose adherence to the substrate is facilitated by well-developed arolia and claws on the legs while others spread venom on the body and carved it up. An adaptation to termite capture was noted with a distribution of tasks between the workers which subdued prey, and those which transported it. In the former case, the workers easily eliminated termite soldiers, successively attacked several termite workers and even captured new individuals while holding the first ones captured between their mandibles before retrieving them all at once. The remaining individuals were retrieved by the transporting workers. Given this particularly effective predatory strategy, we concluded that, under certain conditions, M. opaciventris can be used as a biological control agent against termites.  相似文献

The tropical social waspMischocyttarus immarginatus is a nesting associate ofPolybia occidentalis in northwestern Costa Rica. We show that an activeP. occidentalis colony is a necessary component of aM. immarginatus nesting site in this part of the latter’s range.M. immarginatus foundresses actively seekP. occidentalis colonies to initiate nests at a modal distance of 8 cm from them. There is an 18-mm lower limit to how closeM. immarginatus can nest in relation toP. occidentalis. At distances of less than this,P. occidentalis workers can reach theM. immarginatus nest while standing on their own nest and robM. immarginatus of its brood when the adults are absent.  相似文献

Colonies of the fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, can survive flood conditions by forming a raft of ants that floats on the water’s surface until the flood recedes or higher ground is found. Having been forced from the protection of their subterranean nests, rafting colonies are totally exposed and are without retreat. I tested the hypothesis that rafting S. invicta colonies would compensate for their elevated vulnerability by increasing their defensiveness. I measured defensiveness using the amount of venom workers delivered per sting (venom dose), since the repellent effects (i.e., pain and tissue damage) of fire-ant venom are dose-dependent. In the laboratory I assayed colony defensiveness before and after flooding colonies from their nests with water. Colonies were consistently and significantly more defensive while rafting (i.e., each colony’s workers delivered higher venom doses when their colony was rafting than they did when it was assayed pre-flood). The larger venom doses of rafting colonies may reduce their chances of being damaged by encounters with other animals by reducing the duration of such encounters through increased repellency. Encounters with S. invicta during flood conditions have the potential to be unusually dangerous; large concentrations of workers are exposed and available for defense, and they deliver significantly larger venom doses when they sting. Summary Despite its apparent costs, nest relocation is a common phenomenon among ants. Polyrhachis ammon, a common ant in open habitats of eastern Australia, exhibits a high rate of colony emigration to new nest sites. We conducted a field survey and shading experiments in different seasons and years to determine which factors affect colony emigration in this species. We also compared morphological features characterising workers involved in adult transport to determine if workers performing different tasks belong-ed to discernible temporal castes. Nests that were abandon-ed after four weeks were smaller, although distance from a food source and low-level disturbance did not alter re-location rates. The effects of shading and nest temperature on nest survival varied between seasons, as did rates of nest relocation. Transporter workers could not be distinguished from foragers, but had greater mandibular wear and smaller dry mass than transportees. Our results suggest that cues promoting nest relocation in P. ammon may be the result of a combination of factors with varying temporal importance.  相似文献

Alarm pheromones are used in many social insects to elicit an alarm response of nestmates towards disturbances. This chemical alarm channel is especially used by species nesting in closed environments. Polistes gallicus paper wasps typically found their nests on open substrates where visual and vibrational stimuli could be more important than the chemical one to alarm the colony. We investigated, through field bioassays, if, also in this species, workers venom is still the source of alarm pheromones. Our results show that venom volatiles are able to increase the colony defence reaction stimulating more individuals to attack and sting the object of disturbance. Therefore our results suggest the hypothesis that chemical alarm is independent of nesting habit (concealed vs exposed) within the Polistes genus.  相似文献

Here we explored the potential for host shift from honeybee, Apis mellifera, colonies to bumblebee, Bombus impatiens, colonies by the small hive beetle, a nest parasite/scavenger native to sub-Saharan Africa. We investigated small hive beetle host choice, bumblebee colony defence as well as individual defensive behaviour of honeybee and bumblebee workers. Our findings show that in its new range in North America, bumblebees are potential alternate hosts for the small hive beetle. We found that small hive beetles do invade bumblebee colonies and readily oviposit there. Honeybee colonies are not preferred over bumblebee colonies. But even though bumblebees lack a co-evolutionary history with the small hive beetle, they are able to defend their colonies against this nest intruder by removal of beetle eggs and larvae and stinging of the latter. Hence, the observed behavioural mechanisms must be part of a generalistic defence system suitable for defence against multiple attackers. Nevertheless, there are quantitative (worker force) and qualitative differences (hygienic behaviour) between A. mellifera and B. impatiens. Nestmate recognition was observed inPolistes metricus Say workers only if the workers were exposed to their nest surface hydrocarbons after eclosion. If the newly emerged workers were never exposed to the nest hydrocarbons as adults, they showed no discrimination between nestmates and nonnestmates. Furthermore, the newly emerged workers were accepted more readily by their experienced nestmates than by experienced nonnestmates only if the newly emerged wasps had been exposed to the nest surface hydrocarbons. This reciprocal recognition implies that the nest recognition cues are nest surface hydrocarbons that are learned and that may be acquired byP. metricus workers as adults on the natal nest.  相似文献

Summary Interspecific facultative social parasitism is well known in ants and in bumble-bees, but it is rarer in wasps. This form of parasitism is traditionally considered to be an intermediate stage in the evolution of obligate interspecific parasitism, where the parasites are no longer able to nest alone. We report field and experimental observations of a newly discovered facultative parasitic relationship between two closely related free-living Polistes species: P. nimphus and P. dominulus. P. nimphus foundresses sometimes usurp the nests of the larger P. dominulus before worker emergence. The invading queen takes over the nest with abundant abdomen stroking on the nest surface and is accepted by workers if they emerge 6 or more days after usurpation. Morphometric comparisons show that the usurper species, though smaller than its victims, has morphological adaptations consisting of larger heads, mandibles and front femora relative to their body size that may give it an advantage during nest invasion. This strategy is likely to be taken only after the foundress loses her original nest because invading P. nimphus queens have lower reproductive success than they would have had on their own nest. Overall, we found that P. nimphus usurpers use strategies of invasion similar to those of two obligate parasites, suggesting that this may be an example of one of the pathways by which social parasitism evolved.Received 4 April 2003; revised 8 August 2003; accepted 14 September 2003.  相似文献

Abstract.  The active and coordinating capacity of defending the nest is a key feature of social insects. The present study investigates the presence of alarm pheromones in the venom of workers of the social wasp, Polistes dominulus . Laboratory experiments were performed with caged colonies of P. dominulus using a wind tunnel apparatus to test the behavioural response of workers to venom released by other workers and to venom extracts. Contrary to that previously reported for European paper wasps, the present results show that the venom is the source of alarm pheromones. Field experiments combining a visual (black target) and a chemical stimulus (venom extract) were performed to test the effect of the venom on the reaction of colonies. Wasps leave the nest, land on the visual target and attack the target significantly more once exposed to venom extract plus target than to solvent plus target. This work shows that the venom of P. dominulus workers elicits an alarm response, reduces the threshold for attack and acts as an attractant on targets. These results using P. dominulus indicate that, in both American and European species, colony defence is based on the same features, suggesting that chemical alarm is a widespread trait in the genus Polistes .  相似文献

Colony usurpations by newly mated queens of Polyergus samurai were observed under artificial conditions. Newly mated queens of P. samurai were introduced into three kinds of Formica japonica host colonies: queenright, queenless (artificially orphaned), and workerless (only a queen remaining) colonies. In the queenright condition, the P. samurai queen intruded into the host nest and killed the host queen, and was subsequently adopted by the host workers. In all queenright and queenless host colonies, seven of 13 queens of P. samurai succeeded in colony usurpation, although the starting time of grooming, a nestmate behavior, by host workers in the queenright condition occurred earlier than in the queenless condition. In workerless conditions, four of five P. samurai queens ignored the F. japonica queen. The results suggest that while host-queen killing is not necessary, it is important to win acceptance by host workers.  相似文献

The sting of the parasitoid wasp Ampulex compressa is unusual, as it induces a transient paralysis of the front legs followed by grooming behavior and then by a long-term hypokinesia of its cockroach prey. Because the wasp's goal is to provide a living meal for its newborn larva, the behavioral changes in the prey are brought about by manipulating the host behavior in a way beneficial to the wasp and its offspring. To this end, the wasp injects its venom cocktail with two consecutive stings directly into the host's central nervous system. The first sting in the thorax causes a transient front leg paralysis lasting a few minutes. This paralysis is due to the presence of a venom component that induces a postsynaptic block of central cholinergic synaptic transmission. Following the head sting, dopamine identified in the venom appears to induce 30 min of intense grooming. During the long-term hypokinesia that follows the grooming, specific behaviors of the prey are inhibited while others are unaffected. Simulation studies of the task threshold model for task allocation in social insect colonies suggest that nest temperature homeostasis is enhanced if workers have slightly different thresholds for engaging in tasks related to nest thermoregulation. Genetic variance in task thresholds is one way a distribution of task thresholds can be generated. Apis mellifera colonies with large genetic diversity are able to maintain more stable brood nest temperatures than colonies that are genetically uniform. If this phenomenon is generalizable to other species, we would predict that patrilines should vary in the threshold in which they engage in thermoregulatory tasks. We exposed A. florea colonies to different temperatures experimentally, and retrieved fanning workers at these different temperatures. In many cases we found statistically significant differences in the proportion of fanning workers of different patrilines at different experimental temperatures. This suggests that genetically different workers have different thresholds for performing the thermoregulatory task of fanning. We suggest, therefore, that genetically based variance in task threshold is a widespread phenomenon in the genus Apis.  相似文献

Summary Pogonomyrmex colei is a workerless inquiline ant known only from nests ofP. rugosus, its closest relative. Ten of 776 (1.3%) host nests were parasitized at a site in central Arizona, while none of 1499 potential host colonies were parasitized at two other locales. Colonies ofP. colei are perennial, and host alate females in 9 of 10 colonies demonstrates that host queens survive parasitism. Three of 10 colonies died over 19 colony years of observation, while only 1 of 601 colonies became newly parasitized. Mating occurs in morning for up to 2–3 days following summer and fall rains and in afternoon during cool fall days. Mating is intranidal just outside the nest entrance, with males returning to the natal nest. MaleP. colei may be flightless because their wing area is reduced compared to host males. Females fly from the nest and locate potential host colonies by following trunk trails. Workers are the largest barrier to nest establishment, as they removed over 90% ofP. colei females placed in trunk trails or that entered host nests. Males and females ofP. colei andP. anergismus, the only other congeneric inquiline species, are diminutive compared to their hosts, with females 30% lighter than host workers. Fat content is lower and water content is higher inP. colei andP. anergismus females than in their hosts.  相似文献

We examined whether heavy browsing by sika deer, Cervus nippon Temminck, changed morphological characteristics of a Japanese nettle, Urtica thunbergiana Sieb. et Zucc., in Nara Park, where a large population of sika deer has been maintained for more than 1,200 years. Wild nettles of Nara Park exhibited smaller leaf area, 11–223 times more stinging hairs per leaf, and 58–630-times higher stinging hair densities than those of other areas where there was no evidence of sika deer browsing. There were no significant differences in stinging hair length between the areas. Nettles from Nara Park that were cultivated from seeds in a greenhouse retained a larger number and higher density of stinging hairs. In the field, nettles of Nara Park were less frequently browsed by sika deer and showed higher survivorship than nettles that were transplanted from an unbrowsed area into Nara Park. These results indicate that: (1) the U. thunbergiana population of Nara Park has an extremely high stinging hair density compared with those of unbrowsed areas; (2) this characteristic has a genetic basis, and (3) stinging hairs serve as a defensive structure against sika deer, contributing to an increase in survivorship. Thus, we conclude that a U. thunbergiana population in Nara Park, with extremely high stinging hair densities, has evolved through natural selection due to heavy browsing by sika deer.  相似文献

Summary Alarm pheromones, chemical substances produced by social insects to alert the colony to threat, are the principal means by which colony defence is co-ordinated. We present the results of a study on alarm behaviour in 5 swarming species of wasps belonging to the genus Ropalidia. These species show a remarkably efficient strategy of alarm communication, including visual display and attack synchronization. We show that pheromones released from the venom gland play an important role in alarm recruitment in species belonging to the Ropalidia flavopicta group, but not in Ropalidia sumatrae. We analysed the contents of the venom reservoirs content of four of the studied species by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Glands were found to contain a complex mixture of volatile compounds as well as spiroacetals of higher molecular weight. Interestingly, despite all species producing similar chemical compounds from the venom gland, these were found to elicit alarm behaviour in only those species that build nest envelopes, suggesting a link between chemical release of alarm behaviour and the evolution of nest architecture in Ropalidia wasps.Received 19 August 2003; revised 29 February 2004; accepted 10 March 2004  相似文献

I studied the predatory behavior of Platythyrea conradti, an arboreal ponerine ant, whereas most species in this subfamily are ground-dwelling. The workers, which hunt solitarily only around dusk, are able to capture a wide range of prey, including termites and agile, nocturnal insects as well as diurnal insects that are inactive at that moment of the Nyctemeron, resting on tree branches or under leaves. Prey are captured very rapidly, and the antennal palpation used by ground-dwelling ponerine species is reduced to a simple contact; stinging occurs immediately thereafter. The venom has an instant, violent effect as even large prey (up to 30 times the weight of a worker) never struggled after being stung. Only small prey are not stung. Workers retrieve their prey, even large items, singly. To capture termite workers and soldiers defending their nest entrances, ant workers crouch and fold their antennae backward. In their role as guards, the termites face the crouching ants and end up by rolling onto their backs, their legs batting the air. This is likely due to volatile secretions produced by the ants' mandibular gland. The same behavior is used against competing ants, including territorially-dominant arboreal species that retreat further and further away, so that the P. conradti finally drive them from large, sugary food sources.  相似文献

Summary In laboratory studies we analysed the reaction of aMacrotermes subhyalinus (Rambur) colony in contact with a small group of test termites placed at the head of a gallery system. As test termites we usedMacrotermes subhyalinus of the same nest,Macrotermes subhyalinus of a foreign nest and the related sympatric speciesMacrotermes bellicosus (Smeathman).Contact with an introduced group of foragers evokes a significant recruitment of workers and minor soldiers. The intensity of the response depends on the test groups we introduced. The highest recruitment results withM. bellicosus andM. subhyalinus from a foreign nest. During the recruitment the increase in the number of minor soldiers is greater than the increase in the number of workers, and as a result, the relative proportion of the soldiers in the population leaving the nest is significantly higher than before.Direct observations at the place of contact show thatM. bellicosus individuals are immediately attacked and killed. In the case ofM. subhyalinus from a foreign nest, not all individuals are killed; some are only intensively examined with the antennae or seized with the mandibles.M. subhyalinus from the same nest are rarely attacked. Mostly they are antennally inspected or enter the gallery system unhindered.The recruitment of termites from the nest is released by major workers which, after contact with the test termites, run back into the nest and provoke an alarm by tactile stimuli. On their way back into the nest the major workers, in all probability, lay a pheromone trail which leads the outgoing alarmed termites towards the place of contact.  相似文献

Nonmelanized cuticle development was induced in workers of Solenopsis invicta by feeding them an insect-free diet. The nonmelanized workers weighed less and had smaller mean headwidths than workers from normal colonies. Although nonmelanized ant colonies appeared to function normally in the laboratory, their attempts at stinging were felt only as “pin pricks.” Chemical analysis of venom alkaloids and cuticular hydrocarbons indicated no qualitative differences between nonmelanized and normal workers. Tyrosine, an essential amino acid tanning precursor, was found in adequate quantities in the free amino acid pool of nonmelanized ants. The specific cause of the nonmelanized condition is not known.  相似文献
