The structure of floral nectaries of Crataegus coccinea and C. crus-galli was examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. The radial length of the floral nectary, measured from longitudinal sections of flowers, was 30% larger in C. crus-galli than in C. coccinea. For both Crataegus species the glandular tissue thickness was similar – approx. 400 μm. Also, the number of stomata per mm2 of nectary surface in C. crus-galli was much higher (by 43%) than for C. coccinea. Stomata were situated in deep hollows. For both taxa the period of nectar secretion was 4 days. The mean quantity of total sugar in nectar per 10 flowers of C. crus-galli and C. coccinea was 3.87 mg and 0.33 mg, respectively. Polyploidy plays a prominent role in the speciation process in plants. Many species are known to be part of agamic complexes comprising sexual diploids and more or less exclusively asexual polyploids. However, polyploid formation has been studied in very few cases, primarily because of the challenges in examining these cases phylogenetically. In this study, we demonstrate the use of a variety of phylogenetic approaches to unravel origins and infer reticulation history in a diploid–polyploid complex of black‐fruited Crataegus. The tree approaches are shown to be useful in testing alternative hypotheses and in revealing genealogies of nuclear genes, particularly in polyploid organisms that may contain multiple copies. Compared to trees, network approaches provide a better indication of reticulate relationships among recently diverged taxa. Taken together, our data point to both the autopolyploid and allopolyploid origins of triploids in natural populations of Crataegus suksdorfii, whereas tetraploids are formed via a triploid bridge, involving the backcross of allotriploid offspring with their diploid C. suksdorfii parent, followed by gene introgression from sympatric C. douglasii. Our findings provide empirical evidence for different pathways of polyploid formation that are all likely to occur within natural populations and the allopatric establishment of neopolyploids subsequent to their formation.  相似文献

Abstract Although rice has long been recognized to be uniquely adapted for growth in low oxygen environments of flooded rice fields, rice weeds of the Echinochloa crus-galli complex appear to be at least as well specialized for germination and growth under such unusual biological conditions. Seeds of two varieties of E. crus-galli germinate and grow for prolonged periods in a totally oxygen-free environment. E. crus-galli germinates as well as rice (Oryza sativa) under a total nitrogen atmosphere and produces as large a seedling in spite of its much smaller seed size. Like rice, the seedlings of E. crus-galli are unpigmented, the primary leaves do not emerge from the coleoptile and no root growth occurs without oxygen. Of particular interest is the ultrastructure of mitochondria from anaerobically-grown seedlings. Mitochondrial profiles from the primary leaf of seedlings grown continuously in nitrogen are very similar to those grown aerobically. The size and shape of the mitochondria are similar and the cristae are numerous and normal in appearance. This is in sharp contrast to previous studies of other species which have reported that mitochondria were vesiculate and tended to lose their normal fine-structure after similar periods without oxygen. Finally, based on ultrastructure and 14C labeling studies, anaerobically-grown seedlings are highly active metabolically, which may explain, at least for E. crus-galli var. oryzicola, its ability to germinate and emerge from flooded rice fields.  相似文献

Allelochemicals released by rice roots and residues in soil   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
A few rice (Oryza sativa L.) varieties or rice straw produce and release allelochemicals into soil in which interfere with the growth of neighboring or successive plants. Allelopathic rice PI312777 and Huagan-1 at their early growth stages released momilactone B, 3-isopropyl-5-acetoxycyclohexene-2-one-1, and 5,7,4′-trihydroxy-3′,5′-dimethoxyflavone into soil at phytotoxic levels, but non-allelopathic rice Huajingxian did not. Both allelopathic and non-allelopathic rice residues released momilactone B and lignin-related phenolic acids (p-hydroxybenzoic, p-coumaric, ferulic, syringic and vanillic acids) into the soil during residue decomposition to inhibit successive plants. The results indicated that allelochemicals involved in rice allelopathy from living and dead plants are substantially different. Interestingly, the concentrations of the allelochemicals released from the allelopathic rice seedlings in soil increased dramatically when they were surrounded with Echinochloa crus-galli. The concentrations of the allelochemicals were over 3-fold higher in the presence of E. crus-galli than in the absence of E. crus-galli. However, the same case did not occur in non-allelopathic Huajingxian seedlings surrounded with E. crus-galli. In addition to allelochemical exudation being promoted by the presence of E. crus-galli, allelopathic rice seedlings also increased allelochemical exudation in response to exudates of germinated E. crus-galli seeds or lepidimoide, an uronic acid derivative exuded from E. crus-galli seeds. These results imply that allelopathic rice seedlings can sense certain allelochemicals released by E. crus-galli into the soil, and respond by increased production of allelochemicals inhibitory to E. crus-galli. This study suggests that rice residues of both allelopathic and non-allelopathic varieties release similar concentrations and types of allelochemicals to inhibit successive plants. In contrast, living rice plants of certain allelopathic varieties appear to be able to detect the presence of interspecific neighbors and respond by increased allelochemicals.  相似文献

Chromosome counts were determined for 46 populations ofBiscutella representing 28 taxa. The genus was found to contain diploid taxa with 2n = 12, 16 and 18, tetraploid taxa with 2n = 36 and hexaploid taxa having 2n = 54.B. laevigata L. s. l. consists of diploid and tetraploid populations which are poorly differentiated morphologically. TetraploidB. laevigata s. l. and hexaploidB. variegata Boiss. & Reuter (s. l.) are characterized by chromosomal instability. The variation in chromosome numbers and the occurrence of polyploidy is discussed in relation to the taxonomy of the genus. An investigation of the breeding system showed that most of the annual species were self-compatible and partly inbreeding and most of the perennial species self-incompatible and, therefore, outbreeding, while one annual species,B. cichoriifolia Loisel., showed both systems.  相似文献

The genus Conyza (Asteraceae) represents one of the foremost examples of intercontinental plant invasions from the New World to the Old World that has resulted in a number of taxonomic problems owing to the dearth of knowledge concerning the biosystematics of the genus. In this study, quantitative trait and enzyme electrophoresis analysis was used to assess the pattern of variation within and among five short-lived taxa of Conyza (C. blakei, C. bonariensis, C. canadenis, C. floribunda, C. sumatrensis), introduced into Europe, and to test the hypothesis of a recent hybrid origin of C. floribunda. The five taxa exhibit marked differences in morphological and life-history characteristics that are concordant with divergence in genes encoding isozymes. In addition, a recent hybrid origin of C. floribunda is clearly not supported by either quantitative or electrophoretic data. These findings suggest that the five taxa differentiated genetically in their native range prior to their introduction in Europe. As formerly suggested by Arthur Cronquist (Bulletin of the Torrey Botanical Club 70: 629–632, 1943), C. canadensis appears to be more closely related to the genus Erigeron than the other taxa. The electrophoretic results also confirm that this particular species is diploid, while the presence of multiple bands and fixed heterozygosity demonstrates that the other Conyza taxa are all genetic allopolyploids. Both quantitative and electrophoretic data suggest the presence of two groups among the polyploid taxa: one comprising C. bonariensis and C. sumatrensis, the other C. blakei and C. floribunda. The latter grouping is supported by the observation that C. blakei and C. floribunda, both native to Argentina, exhibit a striking ability to shift from semelparous to iteroparous reproduction, while the other taxa are strictly semelparous.  相似文献

Abstract. The phylogeny of Boloria s.l. is reconstructed on the basis of sixty-three characters from the genital morphology of both sexes of twenty-nine taxa. Three unique and several homoplasious autapomorphies support the monophyly of Boloria. The genus is divided into two well-supported clades, one comprising the subgenera Boloria s.str. and Proclossiana and one comprising the subgenus Clossiana. Although the phylogeny of Clossiana remains largely uncertain, perhaps due to a rapid and recent speciation in some groups, it can be divided into two groups. A more subordinate group (the polaris group) appears well supported by a highly specialized phallus. Morphological evidence supports a clade comprising B.(C.) chariclea and both Palaearctic and North American B.(C.) titania populations. Possibly these taxa form a superspecies complex where B.(C.) chariclea is paraphyletic with regard to the different B.(C.) titania populations: molecular studies will be needed to test this hypothesis.  相似文献

Numerous attempts to capture the morphological variability of the genus Caulerpa have resulted in an unstable classification of numerous varieties and formae. In the present study we attempted to test taxon boundaries by investigating morphological and genetic variation within and between seven taxa of Caulerpa, supposedly belonging to four species, sampled at different sites in a Philippine reef system. Using both field and culture observations, we described the relation between the variability of a set of morphological characters and ecological parameters, such as wave exposure, light intensity, and substrate type. Statistical analyses showed that the limits between two (out of three) ecads of the C. racemosa (Forsskål) J. Agardh complex were obscured by the presence of morphological plasticity. Other studied taxa of Caulerpa (i.e. C. cupressoides [Vahl] C. Agardh, C. serrulata [Forsskål] J. Agardh, and two formae of C. sertularioides [S. Gmelin] Howe) could be grouped based on morphology despite the presence of morphological plasticity. Our results indicated a strong association between light intensity and several quantitative morphological variables. Genetic diversity of these taxa was assessed by partial sequencing chloroplast rbcL and tufA genes and the ycf10‐chlB chloroplast spacer. In all phylogenetic analyses, C. serrulata, C. cupressoides, C. sertularioides, and the three ecads of C. racemosa emerged as distinct genetic units. Despite the presence of morphological plasticity and morphological convergence, a subset of morphological characters traditionally used in taxonomic delimitation still had sufficient discriminative power to recognize the terminal phylogenetic clades.  相似文献

We evaluated the relationship between Celeus undatus and Celeus grammicus, with the objective of clarifying their evolutionary history. We analysed fragments of the mitochondrial and nuclear genes of 57 specimens. For comparative purposes, we inspected the plumage patterns of 77 skins. Our findings highlight the absence of reciprocal monophyly between the two taxa, given their reduced genetic divergence, and the lack of any clear separation of the two forms in the haplotype networks. A similar situation was found in the STRUCTURE analysis, with reciprocal contributions from the two taxa to the respective clusters, indicating that C. grammicus and C. undatus cannot be differentiated using the molecular markers. Corroborating the genetic data, our plumage analyses also failed to find any clear diagnostic characters between the polytypic C. undatus and C. grammicus, as they are defined at present. The genetic profile is consistent with either extensive historical gene flow between the species or, alternatively, incomplete lineage sorting, rather than recent secondary contact. The lack of monophyly between the two taxa impeded subspecies‐level phylogeographic inferences, with the subspecific variation being interpreted as a probable artefact of the phenotypic plasticity of the two forms. These findings indicate clearly that the two taxa form a single evolutionary unit, in which the morphological differentiation used to diagnose the species, combined with their geographic distribution, is at odds with the incomplete separation of the taxa. This may reflect disparities in the rates of differentiation between molecular and phenotypic markers, which is possibly due to the variation in selection pressures along a humidity gradient in Amazonia.  相似文献

The morphological and cellular basis of anoxic germination in Echinochloa crus-galli var. oryzicola is reported. The embryo of E. crus-galli var. oryzicola is typically panicoid in its overall morphology, and is relatively large with a prominent coleoptile and mesocotyl. The response to anoxia is essentially the same in light and dark. Shoot growth occurs in both mesocotyl and coleoptile by cell elongation with no cell division. There is no emergence of the radicle without oxygen. Under anoxia the growth response is not the same as etiolation; there is no plumule elongation within the coleoptile, no protochlorophyll(ide) is found, and limited mesocotyl elongation occurs without oxygen. Air-dark treatment after anoxic germination results in a typical etiolated morphological response, including a resumption of mesocotyl growth, elongation of the plumule within the coleoptile, and initiation of pigment synthesis. These results indicate the effects of anoxia are not permanent but rather limiting and reversible.  相似文献

1. Temperature and oxygen are recognised as the main drivers of altitudinal limits of species distributions. However, the two factors are linked, and both decrease with altitude, why their effects are difficult to disentangle. 2. This was experimentally addressed using aquatic macroinvertebrates; larvae of Andesiops (Ephemeroptera), Claudioperla, (Plecoptera), Scirtes (Coleoptera) and Anomalocosmoecus (Trichoptera), and the amphipod Hyalella in an Ecuadorian glacier‐fed stream (4100–4500 m a.s.l.). The following were performed: (i) quantitative benthic sampling at three sites to determine altitudinal patterns in population densities, (ii) transplants of the five taxa upstream of their natural altitudinal limit to test the short‐term (14 days) effect on survival, and (iii) in situ experiments of locomotory activity as a proxy for animal response to relatively small differences in temperature (5 °C vs. 10 °C) and oxygen saturation (55% vs. 62%). 3. The transplant experiment reduced survival to a varying degree among taxa, but Claudioperla survived well at a site where it did not naturally occur. In the in situ experiment, Scirtes and Hyalella decreased their activity at lower oxygen saturation, whereas Andesiops and Anomalocosmoecus did so at a low temperature. The decrease in activity from a high to a low temperature and oxygen for the five taxa was significantly correlated with their mortality in the transplant experiment. 4. Together the present experiments indicate that even relatively small differences in temperature and oxygen may produce effects explaining ecological patterns, and depending on the taxon, either water temperature or oxygen saturation, without clear interacting effects, are important drivers of altitudinal limits.  相似文献

In molecular phylogenetic studies, Lophopyxidaceae and Putranjivaceae are well supported as sisters in the large rosid order Malpighiales. As the floral structure of both families is poorly known and the two families have never been compared, the present comparative study was carried out, as part of a larger project on the comparative floral structure of Malpighiales, using microtome section series and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies. Similar to other angiosperm clades, it appears that the structure of the ovules is a strong marker for suprafamilial relationships in Malpighiales. Both families have two collateral pendant antitropous ovules per carpel associated with obturators (as in some Euphorbiaceae s.l., to which Putranjivaceae belonged in earlier classifications). However, in contrast with Euphorbiaceae s.l., the ovules are not crassinucellar, but either incompletely tenuinucellar or only weakly crassinucellar with a long and conspicuously slender nucellus and an endothelium, and do not have a nucellar beak, but a normal micropyle, features they share with families other than Euphorbiaceae s.l. among Malpighiales. Other shared features of the two families include the following. The outer sepals tend to be smaller than the inner ones and the sepals do not protect the gynoecium in older buds. Sepals of some taxa have a single vascular trace. A short zone of synsepaly tends to be present. Stamens tend to be antesepalous in haplostemonous flowers. A short gynophore is present. The synascidiate zone extends up to above the placenta, but is restricted to the ovary in taxa with more than one carpel. The micropyle is formed by the inner integument. The ventral carpel slits extend down into the synascidiate zone as postgenitally fused furrows. The carpels have a broad dorsal band of vascular bundles in the style. The overall floral structure of the two families corroborates their sister position well and does not support the earlier association of Putranjivaceae with Euphorbiaceae s.l. or of Lophopyxidaceae with Geraniales–Sapindales–Celastrales, which rely on shared superficial floral similarities. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2013, 172 , 404–448.  相似文献

The role of salinity as a factor determining the distribution of two red algal taxa, Caloglossa leprieurii (Mont.) J. Ag. var. leprieurii and Caloglossa leprieurii var. angusta Jao, along the course of the Brisbane River, Queensland, Australia, was investigated. In the field, C. leprieurii var. angusta tolerated a narrower salinity range (mean salinity = 0.0–18.9) than C. leprieurii var. leprieurii (mean salinity = 2.0–33.8) and occupied areas of lower salinity (salinity expressed according to the Practical Salinity Scale of 1978). Both taxa coexisted for a distance of 23 km along the middle reaches of the river. Cell measurements of specimens of both taxa collected along the river showed an increase in cell sizes upstream from the mouth. Results of a reciprocal transplant experiment and growth responses in a series of laboratory culture studies of the two taxa in a range of salinities are presented. These could be correlated with the field distribution of the algae, demonstrating their euryhalinity and the presence of distinct salinity ecotypes.  相似文献

Selection on spore dispersal mechanisms in mosses is thought to shape the transformation of the sporophyte. The majority of extant mosses develop a sporangium that dehisces through the loss of an operculum, and regulates spore release through the movement of articulate teeth, the peristome, lining the capsule mouth. Such complexity was acquired by the Mesozoic Era, but was lost in some groups during subsequent diversification events, challenging the resolution of the affinities for taxa with reduced architectures. The Funariaceae are a cosmopolitan and diverse lineage of mostly annual mosses, and exhibit variable sporophyte complexities, spanning from long, exerted, operculate capsules with two rings of well‐developed teeth, to capsules immersed among maternal leaves, lacking a differentiated line of dehiscence (i.e., inoperculate) and without peristomes. The family underwent a rapid diversification, and the relationships of taxa with reduced sporophytes remain ambiguous. Here, we infer the relationships of five taxa with highly reduced sporophytes based on 648 nuclear loci (exons complemented by their flanking regions), based on inferences from concatenated data and concordance analysis of single gene trees. Physcomitrellopsis is resolved as nested within one clade of Entosthodon. Physcomitrella s. l., is resolved as a polyphyletic assemblage and, along with its putative relative Aphanorrhegma, nested within Physcomitrium. We propose a new monophyletic delineation of Physcomitrium, which accommodates species of Physcomitrella and Aphanorrhegma. The monophyly of Physcomitrium s. l. is supported by a small plurality of exons, but a majority of trees inferred from exons and their adjacent non‐coding regions.  相似文献

Sponges are among the most species‐rich and ecologically important taxa on coral reefs, yet documenting their diversity is difficult due to the simplicity and plasticity of their morphological characters. Genetic attempts to identify species are hampered by the slow rate of mitochondrial sequence evolution characteristic of sponges and some other basal metazoans. Here we determine species boundaries of the Caribbean coral reef sponge genus Callyspongia using a multilocus, model‐based approach. Based on sequence data from one mitochondrial (COI), one ribosomal (28S), and two single‐copy nuclear protein‐coding genes, we found evolutionarily distinct lineages were not concordant with current species designations in Callyspongia. While C. fallax, C. tenerrima, and C. plicifera were reciprocally monophyletic, four taxa with different morphologies (C. armigera, C. longissima, C. eschrichtii, and C. vaginalis) formed a monophyletic group and genetic distances among these taxa overlapped distances within them. A model‐based method of species delimitation supported collapsing these four into a single evolutionary lineage. Variation in spicule size among these four taxa was partitioned geographically, not by current species designations, indicating that in Callyspongia, these key taxonomic characters are poor indicators of genetic differentiation. Taken together, our results suggest a complex relationship between morphology and species boundaries in sponges.  相似文献

Seed protein profiles of 40 cultivated and wild taxa of Chenopodium have been compared by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The relative similarity between various taxa, estimated by Jaccard’s similarity index and clustered in UPGMA dendrogram, is generally in accordance with taxonomic position, crossability relationships and other biochemical characters. Eight accessions of C. quinoa studied are clustered together and show genetic similarity with closely related C. bushianum and C. berlandieri subsp. nuttalliae. The taxa included under C. album complex are clustered in two groups which show that these taxa are a heterogenous assemblage and their taxonomic affinities need a reassessment. Other wild species studied are placed in the dendrogram more or less according to their taxonomic position.  相似文献

Much argument has been occasioned by questions having to do with generic concepts in the tribe Heliantheae, subtribe Ambrosiinae, especially involving the genus Iva. Some workers recognize five genera (e.g., Leuciva, Chorisiva, Oxytenia, Cyclachaena, and Iva s. str.), while others recognize only a single genus Iva s. 1. Although chemical, pollen ultrastructure, and other morphological data have challenged the latter concept, relationships among the segregate taxa are still unclear. The current study used cladistic analyses of chloroplast DNA variation to investigate evolutionary relationships within Iva s. l., especially within the controversial section Cyclachaena. Nuclear rDNA was also utilized to test for hybrid origin of selected taxa. The results support the dismemberment of Iva s. l. and recognition of Iva s. str., largely because Iva s. l. is shown to be paraphyletic. Most members of the section Cyclachaena were found to have relatively close interspecific relationships. Nevertheless, cpDNA data strongly support two lineages within Cyclachaena. One lineage, including I. xanthifolia, I. acerosa, I. nevadensis, and I. dealbata, has a close relationship with the genus Euphrosyne. The second lineage includes only one species, I. ambrosiaefolia, which is closely related to Dicoria. The origin of I. ambrosiaefolia was shown to be monophyletic, not involving hybridization.  相似文献

Polymorphism in the lengths of restriction fragments of the whole cpDNA molecule were studied in 15 taxa (species or subspecies) of the genus Olea. From restriction analysis using nine endonucleases, 28 site mutations and five length polymorphisms were identified, corresponding to 12 distinct chlorotypes. From a phenetic analysis based on a Nei’s dissimilarity matrix and a Dollo parsimony cladistic analysis using, as an outgroup, a species of the genus Phillyrea close to Olea, the ten taxa of section Olea were distinguished clearly from the five taxa of section Ligustroides which appear to posses more ancestral cpDNA variants. Within the section Ligustroides, the tropical species from central-western Africa, Olea hochtetteri, showed a chlorotype which differed substantially from those of the other four Olea taxa growing in southern Africa, supporting a previous assessment according to which O. hochtetteri may have been subjected to a long period of geographical isolation from the other Olea taxa. Within the Olea section, three phyla were identified corresponding to South and East Africa taxa, Asiatic taxa, and a group including Saharan, Macaronesian and Mediteranean taxa, respectively. On the basis of cpDNA variation, the closest Olea taxa to the single Mediterranean species, Olea europaea, represented by its very predominant chlorotype, observed in both wild and cultivated olive, were found to be Olea laperrinei (from the Sahara), Olea maroccana (from Maroccan High Atlas) and Olea cerasiformis (from Macaronesia). These three taxa, which all share the same chlorotype, may have a common maternal origin. Received: 5 December 1999 / Accepted: 30 December 1999  相似文献
