Wood anatomy of 16 collections representing three species containing eight subspecies of the single genusDaphniphyllum is analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively.Daphniphyllum has vessels angular to roundish in transection, scalariform perforation plates, scalariform to opposite lateral wall vessel pitting, tracheids with fully bordered pits, heterocellular multiseriate and uniseriate rays, diffuse axial parenchyma and, in one taxon, chambered crystals in axial parenchyma cells. Growth rings, narrower vessels, and more numerous, vessels per square mm characterize taxa from cooler habitats. All of the taxa have highly mesomorphic woods. Comparisons are made between Daphniphyllaceae and the other families of Thorne's Pittosporales (Balanopaceae, Bruniaceae, Buxaceae, Byblidaceae, Geissolomataceae. Grubbiaceae, Myrothamnaceae, Pittosporaceae, Roridulaceae, and Tremandraceae). These families are most comparable to hamamelidoid or rosoid families; other similarities or relationships for these families may exist, but are less conspicuous or less close. The families cited may form a plexus, characterized by primitive xylary and other features, comparable to Annonales (Magnoliales) as products of an early radiation of dicotyledons.  相似文献

CARLQUIST, S., 1984. Wood and stem anatomy of Lardizabalaceae, with comments on the vining habit, ecology and systematics. Qualitative and quantitative data, based mostly upon liquid-preserved specimens, are presented for Akebia, Roquila, Decaisnea, Holbodia, Lardizabala, Sinofranchetia and Stauntonia . Because Decaisnea is a shrub whereas the other genera are vines, anatomical differences attributable to the scandent habit can be considered. These include exceptionally wide vessels, a high proportion of vessels to tracheids (or other imperforate trdcheary elements) as seen in transection, simple perforation plates, multiseriate rays which are wide and tall, and pith which is partly or wholly sclerenchymatous. With respect to ecology, two features are discussed: spirals in narrower vessels may relate to adaptation to freezing in the species of colder areas, and crystalliferous sclereids seem adapted in morphology and position to deterrence of phytophagous insects or herbivores. The wood may provide mechanisms for maintaining conduction even if wider vessels are deactivated temporarily by formation of air embolisms. Wood and stem anatomy of Lardizabalaceae compare closely to those of Berberidaceae and of Clematis (Ranunculaceae), as well as to other families of Berberidales. Decaisnea is more primitive than these in having consistently sralariform perforation plates and in having scalariform pitting on lateral walls of vessels. A tentative listing of anatomical features which may correspond to generic limits is given.  相似文献

Sarcandra is the only genus of Chloranthaceae hitherto thought to be vesselless. Study of liquid-preserved material of S. glabra revealed that in root secondary xylem some tracheary elements are wider in diameter and have markedly scalariform end walls combined with circular pits on lateral walls. Examination of these wider tracheary elements with scanning electron microscope (SEM) demonstrated various degrees of pit membrane absence in the end walls. Commonly a few threadlike fibrils traverse the pits (perforations); these as well as intact nature of pit membranes in pits at ends of some perforation plates are evidence that lack of pit membranes does not result from damage during processing. Some perforations lack any remnants of pit membranes. Although perforation plates and therefore vessels are present in Sarcandra roots, no perforations were observed in tracheary elements of stems or lignotubers. Further, stem tracheids do not have the prominently scalariform end walls that the vessel elements in roots do. Presence of vessels in Sarcandra removes at least one (probably several) hypothetical events of vessel origin that must be postulated to account for known patterns of vessel distribution in angiosperms, assuming that they are primitively vesselless. Seven (perhaps fewer) vessel origin events in angiosperms could account for these patterns; two of those events (Nelumbo and monocotyledons) are different from the others in nature. Widely accepted data on trends of vessel specialization in woody dicotyledons yield an unappreciated implication: vessel specialization has happened in a highly polyphyletic manner in dicotyledons, and therefore multiple vessel origins represent a logical extension backward in time. If a group of vesselless dictyoledons ancestral to other angiosperms existed, they can be hypothesized to have had a relatively homogeneous floral plan now that Sarcandra-like plants no longer need be imagined within that group. Sarcandra and other Chloranthaceae show that the borderline between vessel absence and presence is less sharp than generally appreciated.  相似文献

The distribution of scalariform and simple perforation plates along vessels in Arthrophyllum otopyrenum, Meryta tenuifolia, and Polyscias multijuga (Araliaceae) is examined. In all three species, most vessels bear simple perforation plates only, but the combination of simple and scalariform perforation plates in variable ratios also occurs. Aggregated arrangement of scalariform perforation plates along the vessels was statistically confirmed in some vessel portions. The scalariform perforation plates occur mostly in narrow vessels that are grouped in multiples. Within the clade represented by Polyscias and Arthrophyllum, the evolutionary transition from scalariform to simple perforation plates is realized as the gradual elimination of vessels or vessel portions with scalariform perforation plates, but is not accompanied by a gradual decrease of the number of bars per perforation plate. The narrow vessels that are grouped in vessel multiples are likely to retain the ability to develop scalariform plates, which could promote the evolution from simple to scalariform perforation plates as is the case within Meryta.  相似文献

Quantitative and qualitative features of wood anatomy are reported for ten collections of seven species of Bubbia. Variations on the basic plan for Winteraceae can be interpreted in terms of taxonomic and ecological distinctions. Tracheid length is correlated with plant size and habit: tracheids are shortest in shrubs. Tracheid wall thickness and ray cell wall thickness distinguish species. Ray cell procumbency and multiseriate ray width increase with age. Growth rings occur only in a species from stream margins. SEM studies reveal absence of a warty layer within tracheids. Helical thickenings are absent. Presence of these two features in Pseudowintera may be correlated with the cool temperate habitats of that genus. Overlap areas of tracheids in Bubbia show various degrees of scalariform pitting, ranging from none (B. semecarpoides) to abundant presence (B. balansae). Perforation-like pits in tracheids of the latter prove, with SEM studies, to have pit membranes containing porosities less than 1 μm in diameter. Scalariform pitting on overlap areas is absent in earlier secondary xylem and increases during later secondary xylem. Scalariform lateral wall pitting can occur in abnormally wide tracheids formed after pauses in cambial activity. These facts show that primitive dicotyledon woods like those of Bubbia can activate genetic information for scalariform end wall patterns and lateral wall pitting such as primitive vessels show without the intervention of paedomorphosis. Paedomorphosis in dicotyledon woods is held still to apply only to special herbaceous and herblike growth forms, not to primarily woody plants. Progenesis (in xylem, loss of secondary xylem) is not held to be necessary to account for the scalariform patterns seen in tracheary elements of primitive dicotyledons. Reasons are given for rejection of the hypothesis that Winteraceae and other woody dicotyledons (Amborella, Sarcandra, Tetracentron, Trochodendron) are secondarily vesselless.  相似文献

The wood of theSarraceniaceae has a considerable number of primitive features including scalariform perforation plates, long and oblique end walls, scalariform lateral wall pitting, solitary vessels, tracheids with scalariform pitting, and diffuse axial parenchyma. Vessel elements in the genusHeliamphora have the greatest number of primitive features, while vessel elements inDarlingtonia andSarracenia appear to have modifications relating to temperate climates. The wood anatomy suggests thatHeliamphora is growing in a habitat more similar to the original habitat for the family thanDarlingtonia andSarracenia. The wood of theSarraceniaceae is similar to the wood of theTheales.  相似文献

The wood anatomy of 16 of the 37 genera within the epacrids (Styphelioideae, Ericaceae s.l.) is investigated by light and scanning electron microscopy. Several features in the secondary xylem occur consistently at the tribal level: arrangement of vessel-ray pits, distribution of axial parenchyma, ray width, and the presence and location of crystals. The primitive nature of Prionoteae and Archerieae is supported by the presence of scalariform perforation plates with many bars and scalariform to opposite vessel pitting. The wood structure of Oligarrheneae is similar to that of Styphelieae, but the very narrow vessel elements, exclusively uniseriate rays and the lack of prismatic crystals in Oligarrheneae distinguish these two tribes. The secondary xylem of Monotoca tamariscina indicates that it does not fit in Styphelieae; a position within Oligarrheneae is possible. Like most Cosmelieae, all Richeeae are characterized by exclusively scalariform perforation plates with many bars, a very high vessel density and paratracheal parenchyma, although they clearly differ in ray width (exclusively uniseriate rays in Cosmelieae vs. uniseriate and wide multiseriate rays in Richeeae). Several wood anatomical features confirm the inclusion of epacrids in Ericaceae s.l. Furthermore, there are significant ecological implications. The small vessel diameter and high vessel frequency in many epacrids are indicative of a high conductive safety to avoid embolism caused by freeze-thaw cycles, while the replacement of scalariform by simple vessel perforation plates and an increase in vessel diameter would suggest an increased conductive efficiency, which is especially found in mesic temperate or tropical Styphelieae.  相似文献

This paper deals mainly with comparative studies on elements of secondary xylem in 39 species of Chinese Magnolia and Michelia. The former plants present longer and slender vessels. Most of them have simple perforation and only a few scalariform perforation plates. In contrast, most of the Michelia species possess scalariform perforation plates and only one with simple perforation. The scalariform perforation plates of Magnolia species, if present, exhibit more bars than that of Michelia With few exceptions, there is no spiral thickening on the vessel wall in Magnolia, whereas in Michelia it is lust the opposite. In addition, some other differences in vessel elements between these two genera are also discussed.  相似文献

Through SEM observation, we found that there are vessels as well as tracheids in the secondary wood of Tetracentron sinense Oliv. The vessel elements are as narrow and as long as or slightly shorter than the tracheids and generally have 1 to 3 very long, or sometimes relatively short and oblique end-wall perforation plates; such perforation plates are also present on the lateralwalls. The perforation plates of the vessels include scalariform and reticulate-scalariform types, with various degrees of membrane remnants present in the end walls.  相似文献

Original scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations are presented for stems of Brasenia schreberi and Cabomba caroliniana of Cabombaceae and three species of Trithuria of Hydatellaceae. End walls of stem tracheids of Brasenia have the same peculiar microstructure that we have reported in Barclaya, Euryale, Nuphar, Nymphaea (including Ondinea) and Victoria of Nymphaeaceae. This feature unites Cabombaceae with Nymphaeaceae. The minute rhomboidal crystals on the surfaces of stellate parenchyma cells of Brasenia reported by Solereder (1906. Oxford: University Press), but not noticed since, are figured. They are like the minute crystals of the often‐mentioned astrosclereids of Nymphaeaceae. Neither of these two features has been observed in Hydatellaceae. If the absence of these two features can be confirmed, the reason may be more related to ecology, development, habit and anatomical organization than to degree of phylogenetic relationship as shown by molecular studies. Anatomical observations on the stem anatomy of Trithuria are offered on the basis of paraffin sections prepared for a paper by Cheadle & Kosakai (1975. American Journal of Botany 62: 1017–1026); that study is notable for a discrepancy between an illustration of a specialized vessel element on the one hand and tabular data indicating long scalariform perforation plates on the other. Long scalariform perforation plates are mostly found in scalariformly pitted vessels of monocots, whereas the tracheary elements of Trithuria mostly have helical or annular thickenings. We were unable to demonstrate the presence of vessels in Hydatellaceae. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 159 , 572–582.  相似文献

The wood structure of 71 species representing 24 genera of the pantropical Lecythidaceae s.l., including the edible Brazil nuts (Bertholletia excelsa) and the spectacular cannon-ball tree (Couroupita guianensis), was investigated using light and scanning electron microscopy. This study focused on finding phylogenetically informative characters to help elucidate any obscure evolutionary patterns within the family. The earliest diverging subfamily Napoleonaeoideae has mixed simple/scalariform vessel perforations, scalariform vessel-ray pitting, and high multiseriate rays, all features that are also present in Scytopetaloideae. The wood structure of Napoleonaea is distinct, but its supposed close relative Crateranthus strongly resembles Scytopetaloideae. The isolated position of Foetidia (Foetidioideae) can be supported by a unique type of vessel-ray pitting that is similar in shape and size to intervessel pitting (distinctly bordered, <5 μm). The more derived Planchonioideae and Lecythidoideae share exclusively simple perforations and two types of vessel-ray pitting, but they can easily be distinguished from each other by the size of intervessel pitting, shape of body ray cells in multiseriate rays, and the type of crystalliferous axial parenchyma cells. The anatomical diversity observed is clearly correlated with differences in plant size (shrubs vs. tall trees): the percentage of scalariform perforations, as well as vessel density, and the length of vessel elements, fibers, and multiseriate rays are negatively correlated with increasing plant size, while the reverse is true for vessel diameter.  相似文献

Four collections of three species ofTrimenia and one collection ofPiptocalyx were studied; early-formed and later-formed wood was analyzed for oneTrimenia. Liquid-preserved material permitted analysis of mucilage and starch storage in wood ofT. neocaledonica andP. moorei. BecausePiptocalyx is scandent whereasTrimenia is arborescent, wood differences relative to evolution of a climbing habit could be examined.Piptocalyx contrasts withTrimenia in having wider vessels, more numerous per mm2, resulting in a conductive area five times greater per unit area than that of theTrimenia woods averaged.Piptocalyx has appreciably fewer bars per perforation plate and thus much greater conductive area per perforation plate than have the species ofTrimenia. Rays inPiptocalyx are much taller and wider than those ofTrimenia. Wood ofTrimeniaceae is highly primitive in its scalariform perforation plates, scalariform lateral wall pitting on vessels, relatively long vessels elements, and heterocellular rays. Imperforate tracheary elements are septate nucleate fibertracheids (or even libriform fibers) rather than tracheids, but loss of borders on pits (and thus lowered conductive function of the imperforate tracheary elements) can be explained by the development of these elements into starchstoring cells. Some fiber-tracheids inT. neocaledonica are enlarged mucilagecontaining cells. Details of vessel structure inTrimeniaceae are similar to those ofMonimiaceae (s. s.), but similarity to some other lauralean (annonalean) families may be found: in mucilage presence,Trimeniaceae resembleLauraceae rather thanMonimiaceae. Wood ofTrimeniaceae may be regarded as highly mesomorphic, corresponding to the moist habitats in which all of the species occur.  相似文献

During vessel evolution in angiosperms, scalariform perforation plates with many slit‐like openings transformed into simple plates with a single circular opening. The transition is hypothesized to have resulted from selection for decreased hydraulic resistance. Previously, additional resistivity of scalariform plates was estimated to be small – generally 10% or less above lumen resistivity – based on numerical and physical models. Here, using the single‐vessel technique, we directly measured the hydraulic resistance of individual xylem vessels. The resistivity of simple‐plated lumens was not significantly different from the Hagen–Poiseuille (HP) prediction (+6 ± 3.3% mean deviation). In the 13 scalariform‐plated species measured, plate resistivity averaged 99 ± 13.7% higher than HP lumen resistivity. Scalariform species also showed higher resistivity than simple species at the whole vessel (+340%) and sapwood (+580%) levels. The strongest predictor of scalariform plate resistance was vessel diameter (r2 = 0.84), followed by plate angle (r2 = 0.60). An equation based on laminar flow through periodic slits predicted single‐vessel measurements reasonably well (r2 = 0.79) and indicated that Baileyan trends in scalariform plate evolution maintain an approximate balance between lumen and plate resistances. In summary, we found scalariform plates of diverse morphology essentially double lumen flow resistance, impeding xylem flow much more than previously estimated.
