The New World species of Bothriochloa O. Kuntze are polyploids with 2n = 60, 120, 180 and 220 chromosomes and they reproduce sexually. Plants with 2n = 180 chromosomes constitute the extremely variable B. barbinodis (Lag.) Herter, which is subdivided into var. barbinodis, var. palmeri (Hack.) de Wet comb. nov., and var. schlumbergeri (Fourn.) de Wet comb. nov. The single collection with 2n = 220 chromosomes belongs with var. schlumbergeri. Plants resembling B. barbinodis in inflorescence structure but having well-developed pedicellate spikelets and 2n = 120 chromosomes are included in B. campii (Swallen) de Wet comb. nov. South American collections of B. springfieldii (Gould) Parodi differ from North American collections in having 2n = 60 rather than 120 chromosomes and in having larger inflorescences as does B. barbinodis. Variety australis de Wet. var. nov. is described to include them.  相似文献

Background: Habitat management for reproductively challenged rare species is a problem when there is insufficient knowledge of their autecology. This study investigated reproductive failure in the rare grass Calamagrostis porteri ssp. insperata (Swallen) C. Greene (Reed bentgrass). Does the management recommendation of high light stimulate clonal growth, flowering, and seed production? Location: Shawnee National Forest, IL, USA, and in a greenhouse and an experimental garden at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL, USA. Methods: Clones obtained from the three known Illinois populations were grown in a glasshouse under experimental light and soil moisture treatments. After 3 years, plants from the high light treatment were planted outside in an experimental garden where the light treatments were maintained for two more years. In the field, vegetative and flowering tiller density, canopy cover, and associated biotic and abiotic variables including abundance of co‐occurring plant species were monitored for 5 years. The overhead tree canopy was cleared over a portion of one population. Results: In the glasshouse, plants increased in size under high light and moist soil, and there were size differences among populations. Sixty‐six per cent (20 of 30) of the genets flowered when planted outdoors under full sunlight but did not produce seed. In the field, flowering only occurred in Calamagrostis growing in the cleared area, but no seed were produced. The plants in the flowering population were smaller than plants in the other two populations. The herbaceous community associated with Calamagrostis in the open diverged from the communities remaining under the shade. Conclusions: This study highlights the difficulty of managing reproductively challenged rare species. Calamagrostis populations can be managed to enhance clonal growth, but establishment of new populations would require translocation of vegetative material as it is highly unlikely that seed can be obtained.  相似文献

Megasporogenesis and embryo sac development in the sexually reproducing taxa Bouteloua warnockii (2n = 22), B. media (2n = 20), B. uniflora Vasey var. uniflora (2n = 20), B. uniflora var. coahuilensis Gould and Kapadia (2n = 20), and B. curtipendula var. curlipendula (2n = 40) all were found to be of the Adoxa type, in which all 4 megaspores persist and divide once to form an 8-nucleate embryo sac. On the other hand, evidence indicated that plants of B. curtipendula var. caespitosa with high ancuploid chromosome numbers reproduce by pseudogamous fertilization of an aposporous embryo sac. In this taxon the megaspore mother cell did not go beyond the first anaphase of meiosis and the functional embryo sac developed from a nucellar cell. Although the 8-nucleate embryo sac was typical, a 3-nucleate embryo sac was observed to develop in some cases.  相似文献

Due to their ploidy levels, their morphological and anatomical characters and their distribution the central alpine Festuca stricta subsp. bauzanina (2n = 8x = 56) and Festuca ovina var. guinochetii (2n = 10x = 70), both belonging to the Festuca valesiaca group, are raised to the specific level. As a new subspecies Festuca bauzanina subsp. rhaetica is described here. The taxa of the polyploid Festuca valesiaca group are morphologically, anatomically and chorologically characterised and an identification key for these taxa in the central Alps is presented.  相似文献

A new species of Crocus sect. Crocus is described as an endemic of Elba Island (Tuscan Archipelago, Italy): C. ilvensis Peruzzi & Carta sp. nov. (2n=8). The new species was wrongly referred to C. corsicus Vanucchi (2n=18), C. etruscus Parl. (2n=8) or C. vernus Hill. subsp. vernus (2n=8, 16) by previous authors. Its karyotype structure, asymmetry and chromosome dimensions show affinity with C. etruscus, and no clear relations with other related taxa. From a morphological point of view, C. ilvensis appears intermediate between C. etruscus and C. vernus subsp. vernus, showing however a peculiar combination of character‐states. The new species is completely allopatric with other Crocus sect. Crocus taxa and its possible role in the origin of tetraploid races of C. vernus is discussed.  相似文献

Summary Microsporogenesis, reproductive behavior, pollen fertility and seed set were studied in Pennisetum basedowii Summerhayes and C. E. Hubbard, 2n = 54; P. macrostachyum (Brough.) Trin., 2n = 54; P. macrourum Trin., 2n = 36; P. polystachion (L.) Schult, 2n = 54; and P. squamulatum Fresen 2n = 54. Meiosis was regular in P. basedowii with primarily bivalent pairing. As many as 54 univalents were observed at metaphase I in P. macrostachyum. A high frequency of univalents at metaphase I in P. macrourum resulted in lagging chromosomes and micronuclei at anaphase I and telophase I, respectively. Pennisetum polystachion and P. squamulatum showed frequent multivalent chromosome associations. Studies of megasporogenesis and embryo sac development in P. basedowii showed sexual reproduction. Pennisetum macrostachyum was highly male sterile with predominantly aposporous apomictic embryo sac development. Pennisetum macrourum, P. polystachion, and P. squamulatum had only aposporous embryo sac development. Seed propagated progenies of these latter three species were uniform and matromorphic, confirming the obligate apomixis nature.  相似文献

Cluster analysis and principal components analysis were used to investigate patterns of morphological variation among specimens of European species of sect.Somera of the genusHyacinthoides (Hyacinthaceae). The results are clearly consistent with the existence of four species (H. italica, H. paivae, H. reverchonii andH. mauritanica). It is proposed that the latter be considered to comprise two subspecies,H. mauritanica subsp.mauritanica andH. mauritanica subsp.vincentina (comb. nov.). A key is presented, together with distribution maps for the five taxa.  相似文献

The species of the Angelica archangelica L.-group and Angelica lucida L.-group are included in Angelica L. based on morphological coincidences and simularities. Both related groups represent different section, the sect. Coelopleurum (Ledeb.) Pimen. and sect. Archangelica Regel of the genus Angelica L. The area of Angelica L. shows an holarctic distribution (fig. 1). A map and diagnoses give an idea of the distribution patterns of the species. They generally occur in mesic sites along rivers often also along the edge of forests. A. archangelica L. is divided into subsp. archangelica with var. decurrens (Ledeb.) comb. nov., f. decurrens, f. tschimganica (Korov.) comb. nov., f. komarowii (Schischk.) comb, nov., f. himalaica (Clarke) comb. nov., var. sativa (Mill.) To reveal the general cytogeographical pattern of Cyanus section Protocyanus in Europe, DNA ploidy and/or chromosome numbers were newly examined for 160 populations by flow cytometry (450 plants) and/or chromosome counting (30 plants). Furthermore, previously published karyological data were revised (236 records). Our analyses confirmed chromosome counts of 2n = 22 for all newly investigated samples of the C. triumfetti group (the records for C. semidecurrens and C. ternopoliensis are new), C. diospolitanus and C. achtarovii; 2n = 44 for C. montanus and C. mollis; and 2n = 20 for C. lingulatus, C. napulifer, C. nissanus, C. orbelicus, C. thirkei, C. tuberosus and C. velenovskyi. The chromosome count of 2n = 20 is the first report for C. epirotus. The cytotype 2n = 40 was newly recorded for the Crimean endemic C. fuscomarginatus and Calabrian and Greek populations of C. graminifolius. The cytotypes 2n = 20 and 2n = 40 were confirmed for C. pindicola. For the first time triploidy (2n~3x~30) was found in C. nissanus, C. thirkei and in a newly discovered hybrid, C. epirotus × C. graminifolius. Two contrasting ecogeographical patterns emerged: cytotypes derived from the base chromosome number x = 11 (2n = 22, 44) are widespread in northern latitudes and ecologically diverse, whereas cytotypes with x = 10 (2n = 20, 30, 40) are confined to mountains in southern Europe. In general, tetraploids have smaller ranges than diploids. The new combinations Cyanus section Protocyanus (Dobrocz.) Ol?avská comb. nov. and Cyanus ternopoliensis (Dobrocz.) Ol?avská comb. nov. are provided. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2013, 173 , 230–257.  相似文献

Callose accumulates in the walls of cells undergoing megasporogenesis during embryo sac formation in angiosperm ovules. Deficiencies in callose deposition have been observed in apomictic plants and causal linkages between altered callose deposition and apomictic initiation proposed. In apomictic Hieracium, embryo sacs initiate by sexual and apomictic processes within an ovule, but sexual development terminates in successful apomicts. Callose deposition and the events that lead to sexual termination were examined in different Hieracium apomicts that form initials pre- and post-meiosis. In apomictic plants, callose was not detected in initial cell walls and deficiencies in callose deposition were not observed in cells undergoing megasporogenesis. Multiple initial formation pre-meiosis resulted in physical distortion of cells undergoing megasporogenesis, persistence of callose and termination of the sexual pathway. In apomictic plants, callose persistence did not correlate with altered spatial or temporal expression of a β-1,3-glucanase gene (HpGluc) encoding a putative callose-degrading enzyme. Expression analysis indicated HpGluc might function during ovule growth and embryo sac expansion in addition to callose dissolution in sexual and apomictic plants. Initial formation pre-meiosis might therefore limit the access of HpGluc protein to callose substrate while the expansion of aposporous embryo sacs is promoted. Callose deposition and dissolution during megasporogenesis were unaffected when initials formed post-meiosis, indicating other events cause sexual termination. Apomixis in Hieracium is not caused by changes in callose distribution but by events that lead to initial cell formation. The timing of initial formation can in turn influence callose dissolution. Apomixis is facultative in characterized members of the genus Hieracium. The three components that comprise the apomictic mechanism include apospory followed by autonomous embryo and endosperm formation. The time of aposporous embryo sac initiation and mode of embryo sac formation are different in Hieracium piloselloides (D3) and Hieracium aurantiacum (A3.4). Genetic studies have shown that a single dominant locus encodes all three components of apomixis in both species (Bicknell et al. 2000). We histologically examined a range of related, genetically characterized apomictic Hieracium plants derived from D3 and A3.4 to assess conservation of the apomictic mechanism in different genetic backgrounds. The plants varied in ploidy, and also in the amount of DNA introduced from sexual Hieracium pilosella (P4). An apomictic hybrid from a cross between the two apomicts was also examined. The developmental processes observed in the parental apomicts were not conserved in the examined plants and alterations occurred in the components of apomixis. One plant also exhibited adventitious embryony. The results show that other genetic factors can modify apomixis with respect to time of initiation, spatial location, and mode of developmental progression. Both the apomictic locus and the modifiers are essential for efficient penetrance of the trait in Hieracium. Some of the findings in Hieracium correspond with observations in Ranunculus and this is discussed in terms of models for apomictic development and the control of apomixis in crops. Sequence data generated during a Canadian barcode survey (COI-5P) of the tribes Polysiphonieae and Streblocladieae, a large and taxonomically challenging group of red algae, revealed significant taxonomic confusion and hidden species diversity. Polysiphonia pacifica Hollenberg, P. paniculata Montagne, P. stricta (Dillwyn) Greville and Vertebrata fucoides (Hudson) Kuntze were all complexes of two or more genetically distinct yet overlooked species. One variety of P. pacifica was elevated to the rank of species as P. determinata (Hollenberg) Savoie & Saunders, stat. nov. Several new additions to the Canadian flora were recorded including P. kapraunii Stuercke & Freshwater and P. morrowii Harvey. Subsequent multi-gene (COI-5P, LSU and rbcL) phylogenetic analyses confirmed that the genus Polysiphonia Greville was polyphyletic, and currently assigned species resolved with many other genera. Polysiphonia sensu stricto was restricted to a group of species that formed a monophyletic lineage with the type, Polysiphonia stricta. Carradoriella P.C.Silva was resurrected based on the South African species Carradoriella virgata (C.Agardh) P.C.Silva. Species previously attributed to Polysiphonia were transferred to Carradoriella, Leptosiphonia and Vertebrata as well as to three new genera described here: Acanthosiphonia gen. nov., based on A. echinata (Harvey) comb. nov.; Eutrichosiphonia gen. nov. for E. confusa (Hollenberg) comb. nov. and E. sabulosia (B.Kim & M.S.Kim) comb. nov.; and Kapraunia gen. nov., which includes K. schneideri (Stuercke & Freshwater) comb. nov. and three additional species.  相似文献

Summary. The mature apomictic embryo sac of Chondrilla juncea is highly vacuolated and demonstrates a polarization similar to that of the amphimictic gametophyte. The microtubule cytoskeleton of this embryo sac is uncharacteristic and relatively weak. The microtubules are positioned along cell walls and resemble cortical microtubules of somatic cells. They do not form the parallel, brushlike structures observed around the filiform apparatus of synergids in the amphimictic embryo sac. In the apomictic embryo sac, the microtubules of both the egg cell and the central cell develop a cortical-like structure, which is entirely different from the radial arrangement observed around the nuclei in the amphimictic embryo sac. Based on epilithic diatom samples collected from the rocky littoral zone of Lake Malawi (102 diatom taxa belonging to 34 genera were listed in the Supporting Information) we proposed the transfer of three taxa to new genera. Afrocymbella brunii (Fricke) comb. nov. was transferred from Gomphonema because of its dorsiventral valve and its transapically elongated dorsal stigma. Afrocymbella rossii (Kociolek & Stoermer) comb. nov. was also transferred from Gomphocymbella, which is actually a synonym of Gomphonema. Aulacoseira euareolata (O.Müller) comb. nov. et nom. nov. was transferred from Melosira because of the presence of linking spines and mantle areolae, and its specific epithet was replaced because of homonymy with Aulacoseira areolata Moisseeva.  相似文献

Sexual and apomictic development in Hieracium   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Most members of the genus Hieracium are apomictic and set seed without fertilization, but sexual forms also exist. A cytological study was conducted on an apomictic accession of H. aurantiacum (A3.4) and also H. piloselloides (D3) to precisely define the cellular basis for apomixis. The apomictic events were compared with the sexual events in a self-incompatible isolate of H. pilosella (P4). All plants were maintained as vegetatively propagated lines each derived from a single plant. Sexual P4 exhibited characteristic events of polygonum-type embryo sac formation, showed no latent apomitic tendencies, and depended upon fertilization to set seed. In contrast, D3 and A3.4 were autonomous aposporous apomicts, forming both embryo and endosperm spontaneously inside an unreduced embryo sac. The two apomicts exhibited distinct mechanisms, but variation was also observed within each apomictic line. Seeds from apomicts often contained more than one embryo. A degree of developmental instability was also observed amongst germinated seedlings and included variation in meristem and cotyledon number, altered phyllotaxis, callus formation, and seedling fusion. In most cases abnormal seedlings developed into normal plants. Such phenomena were not observed following germination of hybrid seeds derived from crosses between sexual P4 and the apomictic plants. The three plants can now be used in inheritance studies and also to investigate the molecular mechanisms controlling apomixis. Received: 11 February 1998 / Revision accepted: 23 July 1998  相似文献

A new species of Penicillium Link ex Gray nom. cons. prop. is described and illustrated. It has been recovered from sandy soil under conifers near Valladolid (Spain). This species is classified, according to Pitt's System, into Sect. Coremigenum (Biourge) Pitt, comb. nov. and Ser. Dendritica Pitt, ser. nov. of the Subgen. Biverticillium Dierckx, because of its characteristically biverticillate penicilli and its ability to produce coremia after somewhat extended incubation under diffuse natural light. It is clearly different from species described so far and is, therefore, proposed as new taxon: P. coalescens, sp. nov.  相似文献
