Buchloe dactyloides is a perennial dioecious grass in which male and female inflorescences are so strikingly dimorphic that they were originally assigned to different genera. The objective of this paper is to present the results of tests for sex-specific vegetative characters, ecological differences, and sexual niche-partitioning, combining them with prior information on the reproductive biology of Buchloe for an evaluation of the key factors leading to the evolution of dioecy and sexual dimorphism. Field and greenhouse data were collected from Oklahoma and Kansas populations on vegetative characters, allocation to reproduction, and relative growth and competitive success along resource gradients. Except for greater susceptibility to leaf rust by males, there were no significant differences between males and females in vegetative characters, total biomass, or reproductive effort. Field studies of spatial distributions of males and females failed to show any relation to soil, topography, or soil moisture. In a 45-month greenhouse experiment starting at the seedling stage, the relative growth and competitive success of randomly paired individuals showed no evidence for differential competitive success or for niche-partitioning of males and females. The “outcrossing advantage” and subsequent sexual specialization of the female inflorescence appear to be the major factors underlying this dimorphic system. 相似文献

Buchloe dactyloides (Nutt.) Engelm. is a perennial, sod-forming shortgrass of the grasslands of central North America from Montana to northern Mexico. The objectives of this research were to compare a cultivar (Sharps Improved) and a wild population from the Oklahoma panhandle, both in the field and in the greenhouse over several growing seasons, in regard to life-history strategies, sex ratios, and constancy of sex expression. Sex ratios of offspring from individual burs (usually 1–5 seeds per bur) and for all surviving plants germinated from seeds in the greenhouse were markedly different for the two populations. The wild population exhibited a 1: 1 male/female ratio with no monoecious plants and complete stability in sex expression over 3 yr of study in the greenhouse. In contrast, 13% of the cultivar plants were monoecious, and its unisexual plants showed a female bias. Burs of the two populations, in flats exposed to three separated month-long periods of favorable moisture with intervening “drought” periods, showed differential germinability of seeds within burs. The cultivar had less dormancy and produced a greater number of seedlings in the first and second periods; wild burs significantly exceeded cultivar burs in the number of seedlings during the third period and in the number of burs giving rise to seedlings in all three periods. Field and greenhouse measurements of vegetative (VRE) and sexual reproductive effort (SRE) per plant indicated that SRE was minimal (ca. 2% of aboveground biomass) in relation to asexual ramet propagation by rapidly growing stolons (VRE = ca. 80%). Mean SRE and VRE were not only similar for the populations, but also for the males and females within a population, although the values for individual plants were highly variable. It is concluded that Buchloe dactyloides is largely dioecious, with at least some wild populations showing a 1: 1 male/female ratio and constancy of sex expression, and that the bur as a dispersal unit containing 1–5 seeds is particularly appropriate for the breeding system and habitat ecology of Buchloe dactyloides. 相似文献

A total of 235 accessions of Tripsacum dactyloides (L.) L. representing natural populations from 88 locations distributed throughout ten states of the United States were collected in the wild and studied morphologically and cytologically. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was applied to 17 morphological characters recorded for 868 specimens from the 88 locations, which were further combined into 25 groups to facilitate analysis. Multivariate F ratios for six comparisons involving different groups were highly significant, indicating that the populations were significantly different on the basis of all 17 characters. Non-significant MANOVA F ratios for two comparisons between sympatric diploid and polyploid accessions showed them to be morphologically similar. Discriminant function (DF) analysis was employed to determine which characters contributed towards group discrimination. No one variable was found to distinguish between groups; rather, a combination of characters was necessary, and the combination changed with each comparison. Accessions were mainly either diploid (2n = 36) or tetraploid (2n = 72), with two triploids (2n = 54) reported from separate locations in Texas. Cytological data revealed that diploids and tetraploids occupy a more sympatric distribution than previously supposed. Morphological analysis suggested that diploids could not always be distinguished from polyploids on the basis of morphology alone, unless the appropriate characters were used. Information from cytological and morphological data showed Tripsacum dactyloides to be composed of many populations covering a wide range of variability, with each population possessing a characteristic combination of morphological attributes. It was concluded that T. dactyloides can be most meaningfully analyzed in terms of particular geographic regions, rather than attempting to elucidate natural relationships by correlating data from the entire United States. 相似文献

Variations of sex inconstancy were examined for vegetative and seed samples from eight natural populations of buffalograss located along two east-west transects crossing the shortgrass prairies of Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Texas. Each of the eight populations was found to contain inconstant (monoecious) sex forms. Sex form distributions ranged from the Guymon vegetative sample, having no inconstant sex forms, to the Chillicothe seed sample in which the frequency of inconstant sex forms was nearly 70%. Frequencies of inconstant sex forms were generally higher for seed samples than for vegetative samples. Male to female sex ratio of constant (dioecious) sex forms generally did not differ from 1:1 expectations. Inconstant sex forms were more common among peripheral populations where buffalograss vegetation coverage was sparse than for more central populations having a higher concentration of buffalograss vegetation. Quantitative measures of sex inconstancy from artificial crosses were significantly (P < 0.001) correlated with the additive linear model of general combining ability, suggesting that sex determination in buffalograss has high heritability. The possible selection forces affecting the frequency of monoecious sex forms among natural populations are discussed. 相似文献

The gonyaulacoid dinoflagellate Alexandrium taylori Balech is reported for the first time from Italian waters. In July 1997, nonmotile stages of this species, both temporary and sexual resting cysts, were found in surface Ionian coastal waters (Mediterranean Sea) producing localized brownish-yellow patches. Clonal cultures were established, and the life history of A. taylori was studied in the laboratory. Asexual reproduction took place during a motile phase and produced two daughter cells remaining temporarily attached in pairs. This species exhibited isogamy. Small gametes were produced from vegetative cells through the release of a division cyst and multiple fission of the protoplast. Isogametes from the same clonal strain fused and underwent sexual reproduction, forming planozygotes that subsequently developed storage bodies and dark pigmentation. The maturation of the planozygote into hypnozygote also involved an increase in size and final shedding of flagella and theca. Hypnozygotes germinated within 15 days of their formation, and a naked planomeiocyte emerged from the archeopyle to undergo successive divisions and reestablish a haploid motile population. 相似文献

Species responses to disturbance are governed primarily by their life history and physiological traits and by the characteristics of the disturbance. Species reproductive traits are especially important in determining the potential of species to establish and to persist following disturbance. Herein, I review available literature on relationships among disturbance, species life histories, and seed fates in tundra environments. Research conducted on these relationships in alpine herbfield vegetation on the Beartooth Plateau, Montana, over the past 9 yr by my colleagues and myself is synthesized. In tundra environments, species reproductive capacities are often similar to those in more temperate environments, but short, cool growing seasons constrain seed production and reduce seedling growth and survival. Highly variable growing season conditions result in large differences in seed production and seedling establishment among years. On disturbed sites, disturbance characteristics determine the seed and seedling environment and influence rates of establishment. In these windy environments, relationships among soil surface characteristics and seed morphological attributes determine both the horizontal and vertical movement of seeds on exposed soils. Once seeds are incorporated into the soil, soil physical and chemical properties determine temperature and nutrient regimes and have the greatest effects on seed germination and seedling growth and survival. Examining the seed fates of herbfield species with varying life histories illustrates that the identities of species that establish following disturbance are largely predictable from their reproductive traits. Disturbance characteristics determine the success of different reproductive strategies and significantly influence community structure. 相似文献

Variation in the geographic distribution of the life histories of Mastocarpus papillatus was investigated. Carpospores were isolated from 377 female gametophytes collected from eight localities on the Pacific coast of Baja California, Mexico, and California, U.S.A., and grown in laboratory culture. All carpospores from a single female gave rise either to basal discs with gametophyte-like uprights or crustose plants formerly referred to the genus Petrocelis. Early stages in the development of each type of germling were observed, and environmental factors affecting development were suggested. Based on carpospore germlings, females from each location were scored as having either the 1) sexual life history (crustose germlings) or 2) direct-development life history (discoid germlings with uprights). All females from the two southernmost locations in Baja California exhibited the sexual life history. In the three locations from the central-southern California coast, 70-95% of the females exhibited the sexual life history and the remainder exhibited the direct-development life history. In two of the three populations from the central-northern California coast, 70-90% of the females exhibited the direct-development life history and the remainder the sexual life history. In the third location from the central-northern California coast, the northernmost location sampled in the current study, 60% of the females exhibited the sexual life history and 40% the direct-development life history. The relative ecological advantages and disadvantages of the life histories are unknown as are the environmental factors that produced the ratios of sexual to direct-development females observed at each location. 相似文献

The life history of Callithamnion byssoides Arnott ex Harv. in Hook. has been shown to comprise a regular sequence of gametophytic, carposporophytic, and tetrasporophytic phases in unialgal culture using supplemented seawater media. Tetraspore germlings gave rise to gametophytes bearing either antheridia or carpogonia in 13 days. Fertilization, carposporophyte development, and carpospore release took place within 5 days. Carpospore germlings produced mature tetrasporophytes in 13 days. The life history thus required approximately 1 month for completion. No deviations from this pattern were observed.

Diploid (2n = 36) Tripsacum australe Cutler and Anderson var. hirsutum de Wet and Timothy, T. cundinamarce de Wet and Timothy, T. dactyloides (L.) L. var. dactyloides and var. meridonale de Wet and Timothy, and T. laxum Nash were crossed with Zea mays L. (2n = 20) as the pollen parent. True hybrids combine the cytologically nonreduced genome of Tripsacum (36 chromosomes) with the haploid (10 chromosomes) or more rarely diploid (20 chromosome) genome of Zea. Maternal offspring with 2n = 36 Tripsacum chromosomes commonly result from parthenogenetic development of cytologically nonreduced eggs. Some individuals with 2n = 36 Tripsacum chromosomes, however, resemble true hybrids in phenotype. These counterfeit hybrids incorporated Zea genetic material into their Tripsacum genomes without true fertilization having taken place. Offspring of counterfeit hybrids that were grown to maturity resembled their mothers in phenotype, and must have originated parthenogenetically. It is proposed that counterfeit hybrids are also produced in nature, and that this process contributes to origins of variation in gametophytic apomicts, and perhaps also in sexually reproducing species. 相似文献
