Guazuma ulmifolia (Sterculiaceae) is a shrubby tree common in the Central American lowlands in deciduous forest, and in the pastures cut out of it. The tree flowers in April-May (end of dry season) and bears dormant, incompletely expanded fruit until the end of the rainy season (November-December), at which time the fruits rapidly expand and ripen to fall during the first half of the dry season. The fruits are avidly eaten by livestock. A horse may consume 300-2, 100 fruits in a meal, does not distinguish between fresh fruits that have been attacked by bruchid beetles and intact fruits, and defecates large numbers of viable seeds 2-5 days later. Moistened seeds germinate readily in horse dung or in soil. There are hard letter-shaped structures in the mesocarp of the fruit wall and a very hard core, both of which are large enough to function in preventing complete occlusion of the molar mill, an act which would crush the soft small seeds. Guazuma ulmifolia (guacimo) is probably one of the trees whose fruits would have been eaten and the seeds dispersed by the Pleistocene herbivorous megafauna that once roamed Central America.

The tropical tree, Lonchocarpus pentaphyllus (Poir.) DC. (Leguminosae-Papilionoideae), matures indehiscent wind-dispersed fruits containing 0–4 seeds. Most fruits are one-seeded (82%) while less than 2% are three-seeded. An increase in seed number per fruit correlates with increases in four characteristics expected to affect dispersal distance under field conditions: fruit weight, fruit area, square root of wing-loading, and rate of descent in still air. The dry weight of a seed decreases with an increase in seed number per fruit. Under field conditions nearly 40% of the mature fruits fall within the radius of the tree crown. Fruits with more intact seeds are dispersed shorter distances; fruits with no developed seeds travel the farthest. Among one-seeded fruits dispersed beyond the crown radius, dispersal distance is inversely proportional to the square root of wing-loading. The weight of seed in these one-seeded fruits, however, is independent of dispersal distance. Fruits with more seeds have a higher proportion of underdeveloped seeds. However, a greater proportion of two- and three-seeded fruits have at least one intact mature seed than do one-seeded fruits. This comparative study illustrates that changes in fruit morphology and weight associated with different numbers of seeds per fruit affect dispersal properties as well. A decrease in seed number per fruit increases both seed weight and dispersal distance, but it decreases the probability that a given dispersal event results in movement of an intact seed.

Phenology of Tree Species in Bolivian Dry Forests
Phenological characteristics of 453 individuals representing 39 tree species were investigated in two dry forests of the Lomerío region, Department of Santa Cruz, Bolivia. The leaf, flower, and fruit production of canopy and sub–canopy forest tree species were recorded monthly over a two–year period. Most canopy species lost their leaves during the dry season, whereas nearly all sub–canopy species retained their leaves. Peak leaf fall for canopy trees coincided with the peak of the dry season in July and August. Flushing of new leaves was complete by November in the early rainy season. Flowering and fruiting were bimodal, with a major peak occurring at the end of the dry season (August–October) and a minor peak during the rainy season (January). Fruit development was sufficiently long in this forest that fruiting peaks actually tended to precede flowering peaks by one month. A scarcity of fruit was observed in May, corresponding to the end of the rainy season. With the exception of figs (Ficus), most species had fairly synchronous fruit production. Most canopy trees had small, wind dispersed seeds or fruits that matured during the latter part of the dry season, whereas many sub–canopy tree species produced larger animal– or gravity–dispersed fruits that matured during the peak of the rainy season. Most species produced fruit annually. Lomerio received less rainfall than other tropical dry forests in which phenological studies have been conducted, but rainfall can be plentiful during the dry season in association with the passage of Antarctic cold fronts. Still, phenological patterns in Bolivian dry forests appear to be similar to those of other Neotropical dry forests.

Background and Aims

Diptychocarpus strictus is an annual ephemeral in the cold desert of northwest China that produces heteromorphic fruits and seeds. The primary aims of this study were to characterize the morphology and anatomy of fruits and seeds of this species and compare the role of fruit and seed hetermorphism in dispersal and germination.

Methods

Shape, size, mass and dispersal of siliques and seeds and the thickness of the mucilage layer on seeds were measured, and the anatomy of siliques and seeds, the role of seed mucilage in water absorption/dehydration, germination and adherence of seeds to soil particles, the role of pericarp of lower siliques in seed dormancy and seed after-ripening and germination phenology were studied using standard procedures.

Key Results

Plants produce dehiscent upper siliques with a thin pericarp containing seeds with large wings and a thick mucilage layer and indehiscent lower siliques with a thick pericarp containing nearly wingless seeds with a thin mucilage layer. The dispersal ability of seeds from the upper siliques was much greater than that of intact lower siliques. Mucilage increased the amount of water absorbed by seeds and decreased the rate of dehydration. Seeds with a thick mucilage layer adhered to soil particles much better than those with a thin mucilage layer or those from which mucilage had been removed. Fresh seeds were physiologically dormant and after-ripened during summer. Non-dormant seeds germinated to high percentages in light and in darkness. Germination of seeds from upper siliques is delayed until spring primarily by drought in summer and autumn, whereas the thick, indehiscent pericarp prevents germination for >1 year of seeds retained in lower siliques.

Conclusions

The life cycle of D. strictus is morphologically and physiologically adapted to the cold desert environment in time and space via a combination of characters associated with fruit and seed heteromorphism.

Reproductive phenology of 171 plant species belonging to 57 families of angiosperms was studied according to life-forms in four habitat types in a savanna-forest mosaic on the Venezuelan Central Plain. Flowering, unripe fruit, and mature fruit patterns were affected significantly according to life-forms and habitats respectively. Production of flowers, unripe fruits, and mature fruits showed marked seasonality for all habitats except for the forest. Flowering peaked during the rainy season, and fruiting peaked toward the end of the rainy season. The savanna and the disturbed area had similar proportions of species that flowered over the year. The percentage of species with unripe fruits produced throughout the year was more seasonal for the disturbed area than for the other habitats. Mature fruit patterns showed an increase during the late rainy season for the ecotone and savanna. A large number of herbaceous (annual and perennial) and liana species flowered during the wet season, and a smaller fraction flowered during the dry season; and trees, shrubs, and epiphytes increased flowering activity during the dry season. Unripe fruit patterns were similar to those of flowering for all life-forms, however, tree species were less seasonal. Mature fruit production by shrubs peaked in the period of maximum rainfall, while the peak for perennial herbs was in the late rainy season and the peak for annual herbs was during the transition between the rainy season and the dry season. The largest proportion of tree and liana species with ripe fruits occurred during the dry season. Differences among phenological patterns in habitats were caused mainly by life-forms and promote a wider distribution of reproductive events in habitats and overall community in the Venezuelan Central Plain.

Because resource variability is likely to be high in disturbed environments, colonizing species should be opportunistic in their abilities to use resources at any time during the growing season. We examined the effects of timing of nutrient availability on seed quantity and quality in the colonizing annual Abutilon theophrasti. Plants were grown under six different nutrient treatments involving additions of different size, frequency and timing but having the same total amount of nutrients in all treatments. The plants showed an opportunistic response, being able to use nutrients supplied at different times for reproduction. However, when nutrient availability was delayed until fruit maturation had begun, seed number and total seed weight were reduced, production of mature fruits was delayed, and seed P concentrations were reduced. Seeds from the first two fruits of the plants had higher N concentration (mg/g), higher N content (mg/seed), lower P concentration, higher K content, and higher mean seed weight.

Neotropical parrots usually forage in forest canopies for nectar, flowers, leaves, fruit pulp, and seeds. As they have no all-purpose territories, these birds usually exploit vegetation mosaics in order to use plentiful resources as they become available. In this study we examine the use of a gallery forest in the southern Pantanal (Brazil) by a diverse parrot community that ranged from Brotogeris chiriri (a small species) to Ara chloroptera (a large one). Plant food resources principally used by parrots were abundantly available during the rainy season (fleshy fruits), the annual floods (fleshy fruits), and the dry season (flowers). While both smaller and larger species foraged on fruits, parakeets largely consumed the pulp, while larger parrot species used pulp and seeds. In the dry season parakeets foraged extensively on nectar, especially Inga vera nectar that was abundantly available during the last two months of the dry season, the harshest period of the year. Among larger parrots, only Propyrrhura auricollis frequently harvested nectar. Fruits maturing during floods, despite being fish- or water- dispersed were extensively used by the parrots. Hence, unlike what happens in most other Neotropical dry forests, occurrence of a fruiting peak during the annual flooding, which occurs in the transition from the wet to the dry season, constitutes an extra and significant episode of food availability, since in this period, fruit production normally declines. Therefore, the unique and abundant availability of flowers and fruits in this gallery forest may account for the presence of large parrot populations in the southern Pantanal.

Eighty male Yankasa sheep were used in two different experiments. A set of forty sheep, divided into four groups of ten rams each, were used in each experiment. The animals weighed, on average, 20 kg and were 15 months old. The animals were selected from the sheep flock of the Ahmadu Bello University Farm. They were grazed for 6 h daily for a period of 50 days during which they were subjected to intermittent watering. Watering intervals were 24 h, 48 h, 72 h and 96 h for Treatments 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively. The experiment was carried out during the wet season of June to August and repeated in the hot, dry season of March to April, using another set of 40 Yankasa male sheep to find seasonal variations. The animals were not allowed to drink on the field when grazing during the rainy season.Seasonal variations had significant (P < 0.05) effects on the water intake and weight gains of Yankasa sheep. The animals lost 18.8 g, 115.2 g and 172 g daily on 48 h, 72 h and 96 h watering intervals in the dry season, but, on daily watering, they gained 66 g. During the rainy season the animals gained 135.6 g, 124.4 g, 108 g and 92.2 g body weight daily under 24 h, 48 h, 72 h and 96 h watering intervals, respectively.Slight variations were noted in rectal temperatures between treatments with a range of 39.07°C–39.59°C for the dry season and 38.73°C–38.95°C for the wet season. Respiratory rate was significantly (P < 0.05) affected by watering intervals, especially during the dry season, with average values of 32.4, 25.8, 20.5 and 19.9 for 24 h, 48 h, 72 h and 96 h watering intervals. Jaw movements were reduced with long watering intervals, and also pulse rate, especially in the dry season. The results suggest that grazing Yankasa sheep do not have to be watered daily during the wet season but free drinking water is very essential, at least every 24 h (daily) during the dry season.

Seed weight, days to germination and seed viability were observed for 99 species growing in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, India. Seed size was strongly correlated with days to germination; smaller seeds germinated faster than larger seeds. Species which flowered during the rainy season had lighter seeds than species which flowered during the dry season. It was also found that seed size and viability of seeds were related to the season of fruiting. Species which fruit during the rainy season had heavier seeds and shorter viability than species which fruit during the dry season. These flowering and fruiting patterns and varying seed sizes are argued to be adaptations to the time of dispersal, time of moisture availability in the habitat and seedling survival.

Characteristics of fruits, seeds, and ripening of Phytolacca americana were studied in New Jersey, USA to assess their importance in the dispersal strategy of this species. Removal by birds was directly related to the percent of ripe fruits available on a raceme. Fruit removal from a raceme resulted in lower fruit pulp and seed weights for fruits developing on the same raceme, but these differences probably do not influence probability for dispersal by birds. We demonstrate that characteristics of the fruit pulp may decrease seed availability for the primary seed predator, Peromyscus leucopus, and increase the time fruits are available for dispersal. We speculate on the significance of the sequential fruiting in Phytolacca and the relationship to availability of dispersal agents and high-lipid fruits. Sequential ripening and protection from predation result in seed dispersal from late August to early December.

Post‐logging seedling regeneration density by big‐leaf mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla), a nonpioneer light‐demanding timber species, is generally reported to be low to nonexistent. To investigate factors limiting seedling density following logging within the study region, we quantified seed production rates, germinability, dispersal patterns, and seed fates on the forest floor through germination and the first seedling growing season in southeastern Amazonia, Brazil. Fruit production rates were low by three logged and one unlogged populations compared to reports from other regions. Commercial‐sized trees (>60 cm diameter) were more fecund than noncommercial trees (30–60 cm diameter) at two sites, averaging 14.5 vs. 3.9 fruits/tree/year, respectively, at Marajoara, a logged site, over 8 yr. Fruit capsules contained an average of 60.3 seeds/fruit, 70 percent of which appeared viable by visual inspection. Sixty‐seven to 72 percent of apparently viable seeds germinated in nursery beds 2.5 mo after the dispersal period, when wet season rains began. Dry season winds blew most seeds west‐northwest of parent trees, with median dispersal distances of 28 and 9 m on west and east sides of parent trees, respectively. Nearly 100 percent of seeds fell within an area of 0.91 ha. On the forest floor beneath closed canopies, mammals, invertebrates, and fungal pathogens killed 40 percent of apparently viable seeds, while 36 percent germinated. Nine months after seedling establishment—midway through the first logging season following seed dispersal—14 percent of outplanted seeds survived as seedlings, representing 5.8 seeds/fruit. We conclude that seedlings are likely to survive in logging gaps at appreciable densities only in rare cases where previous year fruit production rates by logged trees were high (4–12.5% of commercial‐sized trees/year at Marajoara) and where tree crowns were felled in west or northwest directions.

We present evidence that extreme seed size variation in fruits of Crinum erubescens (range: 0.1 to 66.5 g per seed) occurs when mating pairs are inbred, either from selfing or biparental inbreeding. Several relatively uniform seeds of intermediate size are produced when pollen from several pollen donors is applied simultaneously to a flower. Selfed fruits and some fruits pollinated with a single pollen donor produce both large and small seeds, although selfed fruits produce fewer seeds than outcrossed fruit. These results are contrary to the hypothesis that variation in seed size is attributable to either pollen competition or differential allocation of maternal resource to seeds of different genotypes.

Summary This study examines the pattern of reproduction and factors that limit the maternal reproductive output in the self-incompatible annual, Lesquerella gordonii. Greenhouse experiments showed that fruits do not abscise and they mature if they contain at least one fertilized (outcrossed) ovule. Field studies showed that flowering increased to a peak and then fell off rapidly, while seed production/fruit decreased through the season. Pollen addition did not increase the number of fruit or seeds per fruit, suggesting that fruit and seed production are not pollinator limited. Addition of water increased fruit and seed production by extending the life of the plant, by increasing the number of stalks which flowered, and by increasing the number of seeds per fruit. This indicates that fruit and seed production are resource limited. Fruits are relatively inexpensive as compared to seeds as over 93% of the water in fruits is contained in the seeds. Fifty-three percent of the plants were lost to herbivory as were 64.6% of the fruits on the remaining plants, indicating that herbivory also limited fruit and seed production. It is hypothesized that high fruit set coupled with variable seed set in L. gordonii is an adaptive response to unpredictable, variable resource levels, and high herbivory risk.

Frugivory and seed dispersal have been poorly studied in Neotropical freshwater fishes. We studied frugivory and seed dispersal by the piraputanga fish (Brycon hilarii, Characidae) in the Formoso River, Bonito, western Brazil. We examined the stomach contents of 87 fish and found the diet of piraputanga consisted of 24% animal prey (arthropods, snails, and vertebrates), 31% seeds/fruits and 45% other plant material (algae/macrophytes/leaves/flowers). The piraputangas fed on 12 fruit species, and were considered as seed dispersers of eight species. Fruits with soft seeds larger than 10 mm were triturated, but all species with small seeds (e.g. Ficus, Psidium) and one species with large hard seed (Chrysophyllum gonocarpum) were dispersed. Piraputangas eat more fruits in the dry season just before the migration, but not during the spawning season. Fish length had a positive relation with the presence of fruits in their guts. The gallery forest of the Formoso River apparently does not have any plant species that depend exclusively on B. hilarii for seed dispersal because all fruit species are also dispersed by birds and mammals. Based on seed size and husk hardness of the riparian plant community of Formoso River, however, the piraputangas may potentially disperse at least 50% of the riparian fleshy fruit species and may be particularly important for long-distance dispersal. Therefore, overfishing or other anthropogenic disturbances to the populations of piraputanga may have negative consequences for the riparian forests in this region.

Laguna Grande, Monagas State, Venezuela, is a shallow, V-shaped lake created by the confluence of two rivers. Montrichardia arborescens (L.) Schott. dominated wetlands cover most of the north and south arms and the littoral zone of the main body of the lake. The vegetation and seed banks of Montrichardia wetland sites were sampled in the north arm, south arm and main body five times from the end of the dry season in 1991 to beginning of the rainy season in 1992. The composition of the vegetation was similar and changed very little at all three sites during the course of the study. These wetlands had 53 species. Besides M. arborescens, other common species were Hamelia patens Jacq., Mikania cordifolia (L.) Wild., Sarcostemma clausum (Jacq.) Roem. & Schult., and Vitis caribaea L. In both the vegetation and seed banks, species richness was highest during the dry season. Altogether, the seed banks contained the seeds of 61 species of which 35 were also found in the vegetation. Seeds of three tree species were found in the seed banks that did not grow anywhere in the lake. In the seed bank, seeds of Cyperus odoratus L., Eleocharis interstincta (Vahl.) R&S, Ludwigia hyssopifolia (G. Don.) Excell, L. lithospermifolia (Mich.) Hara, Polygonum acuminatum H.B.K., and Sacciolepis striata (L.) Nash were the most abundant. Mean total seed density over the entire study was 6,500, 3,800, and 6,000 seeds/m2 in the north arm, south arm, and main basin, respectively. Seed production and dispersal occur primarily during the dry season, and the highest seed densities at all sites were found in the dry season when there was no or little standing water. The lowest seed densities at all sites were found during the rainy season during which seed densities declined over 80% at the north and south arm sites. In the main body of the lake, however, seed densities during the rainy season, although lower than during the dry season, actually increased significantly from 3,600 seeds/m2 in August 1991 to 6,000 seeds/m2 in October 1991. A significant decrease in seed density in either the north or south arms or both and a significant increase in the main body site during the rainy season occurred for 5 of the 8 species whose seeds were the most abundant, for all life-form guilds, except hydrophytes and for the entire seed bank. Secondary dispersal by water currents during the rainy season appears to be transporting seeds from the north and south arms into the seed bank of the main body of the lake.

An analysis of the flowering plant flora of a lowland moist forest in central French Guiana reveals 298 species with adaptations for wind dispersal. This represents 16.2% of the flowering plant flora and 9.8% of the class Magnoliopsida (dicotyledons). The most diverse wind-dispersed families are the Orchidaceae in the Liliopsida (monocotyledons) with 135 species and the Bignoniaceae in the Magnoliopsida with 37 species. The wind-dispersed species of central French Guiana have evolved either small, dust-like seeds, fruits or seeds with various kinds of wings, fruits or seeds with tufts of hairs, or expanded wing- or parachute-like persistent calyces. Most wind-dispersed species, among the liliopsids, are epiphytes and, among the magnoliopsids, trees or lianas. In central French Guiana, collections of these species with mature diaspores have been gathered most often in October and March, the months with peak wind velocities. In contrast, collections from June and July, when wind velocities are at a minimum, are rare.
