The floral anatomy ofCamellia japonica is described and the origin of its multistaminate androecium is considered. Of significance is the observation that the complex polyandry of the genus overlies a basic vascular obdiplostemonous pattern. This is evidenced by two systems of staminal bundles. The first diverges from a set of five common petal-stamen bundles and subsequently divides further. The second set of five staminal trunk bundles emerges from the central cylinder slightly above the petal-stamen bundles which are antepetalous. The observations will aid phylogenetic reconstruction for members of the polyphyletic order Dilleniidae to whichCamellia belongs, and in which the polyandry has been too simply and sometimes incorrectly interpreted as a primitive condition.  相似文献

Floral ontogeny was examined in Cyclamen persicum ‘F-1 Rosemunde Rose’ using a combination of light and scanning electron microscopy. The leaf plastochron index (LPI), earlier calculated for leaf elongation, was used to determine the length of each stage of floral development. LPI will provide a useful tool for selecting flowers of a given stage from large plant populations or from plants where flowers are small or inaccessible during early ontogenetic stages. Most features of floral development are similar to those previously described for other primulaceous genera. The petal-stamen relationship, however, is unusual; stamens arise through periclinal cell divisions in the adaxial surface layers of common petal-stamen primordia. Anatomical evidence suggests that the placenta is formed both by appendicular initials which give rise to the ovules and ventral carpellary bundles, and receptacular cells which form some, if not all, of the central axis.  相似文献

The comparative floral ontogeny of five species belonging to the primuloid clade of the Ericales are investigated, viz. Maesa japonica, M. perlarius, Aegiceras corniculatum, Embelia laeta and E. ribes. All five species basically show 2/5-spiral phyllotaxis of the sepal primordia, although with some minor modification (particularly in Embelia, where the flowers are predominantly tetramerous). The phyllotaxis of the common petal-stamen primordia is also 2/5-spiral in the Maesa and Aegiceras species investigated, but appears to be unidirectional in Embelia. All five species develop common petal-stamen primordia in which the resultant petal primordia are larger than the stamen primordia, and in which the stamens develop proximally on the adaxial flank of the common primordia. Growth of the placenta in Maesa and Aegiceras partially embeds the ovules, but in Embelia the ovules are almost fully immersed in placental tissue at maturity. A comprehensive review of all previously published studies of floral ontogeny of primuloid genera is presented, and the phylogenetic significance of the variation between genera is evaluated with reference to recently published cladograms.  相似文献

European oaks have been reported to emit isoprene or monoterpenes derived from recently fixed photosynthetic carbon. The emission type is plant species specific and can be used as chemo‐taxonomic marker. In the present article the isoprenoid biochemical properties of mature Quercus × turneri‘Pseudoturneri’ hybrids resulting from a crossing of a Mediterranean evergreen monoterpene‐emitting species (subgenus Sclerophyllodrys; Quercus ilex L.) and an isoprene‐emitting deciduous oak species (subgenus Lepidobalanus; Quercus robur L.) are described. Both species are compared with respect to the capacity for isoprenoid synthesis and the actual isoprenoid emission pattern of different tree‐types. The analysis showed that the oak hybrid combines properties of both parental species. Furthermore, it could be shown that the enzyme activities of isoprene synthase and monoterpene synthases are reflected in the isoprenoid emission pattern of the hybrids as well as in the observed emission rates.  相似文献

A new heterotrophic armoured dinoflagellate is described from sand habitats in eastern Australia. Cabra matta gen. nov., sp. nov., lacks plastids and an eyespot. The thecal plate formula is Po 4′ 4” ‘x’ 3c ?s 5′′’ 1′′”. Its plate pattern differs from all currently described dinoflagellate genera, but is most similar to the genus Roscoffia. Cabra matta shows some similarity to species currently placed in the family Podolampaceae, however its evolutionary affinities and hence its position within the dinoflagellate systematic hierarchy remain unresolved.  相似文献

Few insects exhibit the striking colour pattern radiation found in bumble bees (Bombus), which have diversified globally into a wide range of colours and patterns. Their potent sting is often advertised by conspicuous bands of contrasting colour commonly mimicked by scores of harmless (Batesian mimics) and noxious species (Müllerian co‐mimics). Despite extensive documentation of colour pattern diversification, next to nothing is known about the genetic regulation of pattern formation in bumble bees, hindering progress toward a more general model of the evolution of colour pattern mimicry. A critical first step in understanding the colour pattern genotype is an unambiguous understanding of the phenotype under selection, which has not been objectively defined in bumble bees. Here, we quantitatively define the principal colour pattern elements that comprise the phenotype array across all species. Matrix analysis of meticulously scored colour patterns of ~95% of described species indicates there are 12 discrete primary ‘ground plan’ elements in common among all species, many of which correspond to segmentation patterning. Additional secondary elements characterize individual species and geographical variants. The boundaries of these elements appear to correspond to expression patterns of Hox genes in Drosophila and Apis but also suggest novel post‐Hox specialization of abdominal patterning. Our findings provide the first foundation for exploring candidate genes regulating adaptive pattern variation in bumble bees and broaden the framework for understanding common genetic mechanisms of pattern evolution in insects. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 113 , 384–404.  相似文献

The mature flower ofHarungana madagascariensis (Choisy)Poir. has an androecium of five antipetalous fascicles, consisting of four stamens each. The stamen fascicles alternate with five indented nectary scales. A SEM-study of the floral development, as well as a study of the floral anatomy was carried out to understand whether the nectariferous scales represent staminodia or are receptacular in nature and consequently whether or not the androecium ofHarungana, and theClusiaceae in general, is originally diplostemonous. The five petals originate by the splitting of petal-stamen complexes. Next the upper part of each complex differentiates basipetally in four stamens. The stamens remain fascicled and are lifted on a long stalk at maturity. Five carpel primordia are initiated united in a low ringwall. The five nectary scales appear after carpel inception and develop an external morphology reminiscent of anthers. The floral anatomy reveals an independent origin of sepal median traces and common sepal lateral traces, free petal traces, stamen fascicle traces and alternating vascular tissue which supplies the nectaries. The petal-stamen complexes are the result of a retardation in petal inception, linked with the absorption of petal tissue into the stamen primordia. The development of the stamen fascicles is discussed; it is suggested that they are of a secondary nature and do not appear as a reduction from a multistaminate androecium. The external morphology and vascular anatomy of the scales speaks in favour of a staminodial nature. The comparison with some other species of theClusiaceae gives evidence of a diplostemonous ancestry of the androecium.  相似文献

Summary DNA-DNA hybridisation experiments show that chloramphenicol induces a burst of initiation from the oriC region of a dnaA46 mutant of Escherichia coli at 36.5° C but not from the isogenic dnaA + strain. Following this stimulation of initiation, DNA replication proceeds normally towards the terminus. The temporal pattern of the extra initiation is in parallel with the induced stimulation of RNA synthesis caused by chloramphenicol in the same strain. This is consistent with the hypothesis that the stimulation of initiation in the dnaA mutant is the result of the stimulation of the synthesis of an RNA species.  相似文献

Sadik , Sidki . (U. California, Davis.) Morphology of the curd of cauliflower. Amer. Jour. Bot. 49(3): 290–297. Illus. 1962.—The development of the curd and inflorescence of cauliflower, Brassica oleracea Linn., var. botrytis D.C., is described. The cultivars ‘Snowball M’ and ‘February-Early-March’ were studied. The curd has a nonfasciated and monopodial type of branching. Curd initiation of ‘Snowball M’ is not dependent on vernalization, but the curd of ‘February-Early-March’ and the floral primordia of both cultivars are initiated only after vernalization. Associated with flowering is the disruption of the curd by the elongation of some of the inflorescence branches. The initiation of leaves, branches, and floral primordia follows a 5 + 8 phyllotaxy throughout all stages of development. This system of phyllotaxy changes at the time of initiation of floral parts.  相似文献

The paired flowers of all species of the Marantaceae studied, except Monotagma plurispicatum, are produced through the division of an apical meristem with a tunica-corpus structure. The solitary flowers of M. plurispicatum develop from a similar meristem which does not bifurcate. The paired flowers of Canna indica are produced in the axil of a florescence bract through the formation of a bract and an axillary flower on the side of the primordium which gives rise to the largest flower of the pair. The sequence of organ initiation for both families is: calyx, corolla and inner androecial whorl, outer androecial whorl, gynoecium. The sequence of sepal formation is opposite in the two families. In the Cannaceae it leads directly into the spiral created by the formation of the other organs, while in the Marantaceae the sequence of sepal formation follows a spiral opposite to that of the other floral organs. The members of the corolla and inner androecial whorl separate from common primordia. In general these common primordia separate into a petal and an inner androecial member through the initiation of two growth centers, at the same level, in the dorsal and ventral flanks of the primordium. In Ischnosiphon elegans and Pleiostachya pruinosa the stamen is initiated at a lower position than the petal in the ventral flank of the common primordium. A similar pattern of initiation is described for the callose staminode in Marantochloa purpurea and Canna indica. This pattern is interpreted as a variation on the more generalized pattern of inner androecial formation found in the other genera.  相似文献

Aim The ‘taxonomic impediment’ has led to a growing trend in ecology and conservation biology to use operational surrogates for species within the context of a particular research project. Because such ‘parataxonomic’ classifications are typically spatially limited in scope, we examined the influence of increasing spatial scale on the congruence of two such approaches with a more traditional taxonomic classification. Location Sturt National Park, north‐western New South Wales, Australia. Methods Specimens of two ant genera, Camponotus and Rhytidoponera, were classified by three independent methods. The ‘parataxonomic’ classification assigned specimens to morphospecies without specialist taxonomic expertise; the ‘taxonomic’ classification assigned specimens to either described species or, where this was not possible, to operational taxonomic units (OTUs) using specialist taxonomic expertise; the ‘phenetic’ classification assigned specimens to putative species using a K‐means partitioning algorithm on basic morphometric data. Specimens of each genus were pooled into ‘assemblages’, which were defined at multiple spatial scales using a nested sampling design. Congruence in the interspecimen relationships of the different classifications was tested for each assemblage using pair‐wise Mantel correlations. Results Classification congruence tended to decrease with increasing spatial scale. There were, however, clear differences between the genera. Parataxonomic–taxonomic congruence was consistently greater for Camponotus, while phenetic–taxonomic congruence showed the opposite pattern. Conclusions Observed patterns in classification congruence are attributed to two principal causes: (i) within‐species morphological variation, including ecotypic variation in Rhytidoponera and caste polymorphism in Camponotus; and (ii) a limit to the morphological similarity of potentially competing species at small spatial scales. Regardless of cause, the decline in agreement as the spatial scale of observation is increased has important implications for the measurement of biodiversity, particularly when comparing samples over regional, continental, and global scales.  相似文献

A synthetic oligodeoxyribonucleotide probe (OAT36) comprising nine repeats of 5'GACA 3′ and several enzymes were used to analyse cow, (Bos taurus) and buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) genomes and a number of monomorphic loci were detected in both the species. Different animals from the same species showed an almost ‘similar’ monomorphic hybridization pattern but animals from two separate species showed a different ‘genome specific’ pattern. The overall hybridization with any enzyme and probe combination was found to be unique to one species. This forms the basis of genome specific hybridization which is substantiated by our zoo-blot hybridization studies. The evolutionary aspect of these loci in the context of sequence polymorphisms is discussed.  相似文献

Aim To describe the coleopteran fauna occurring in canopies of temperate Gondwanan tree species in terms of their diversity and guild and taxonomic structures, and to test the proposition that this structuring reflects the Gondwanan origins of this fauna. Location The Andes and the coastal cordillera of temperate Chile. Methods Canopy fogging was used to sample beetles from 29 trees. The samples were statistically described using Schao and the Simpson diversity index D. Cluster analyses and multi‐dimensional scaling (MDS) were performed. The taxonomic and guild structures of the Chilean coleopteran fauna were compared quantitatively with those found in other parts of the world using homogeneity chi‐square and t‐tests. Results A collection of 25,497 beetle specimens was obtained primarily from Nothofagus dombeyi, Nothofagus obliqua and Araucaria araucana. The specimens collected were distributed between 485 morphospecies and included 107 putative, new generic‐level taxa and 223 apparently undescribed species. Estimates of the size of the canopy beetle fauna showed that 600+ species were likely to be present. The communities found on a tree species differed markedly between years. MDS plots showed less community divergence between tree species for predators than for phytophages and xylophages. The guild structure was similar to that found on Australian ‘Gondwanan’ trees but differed significantly from the community structures found on ‘Laurasian’ tropical and temperate trees in supporting fewer phytophages and saprophages, but more xylophages. The predator guild showed a different pattern, with tropical faunas differing from those of more temperate regions, irrespective of hemisphere, as did the distribution of superfamilies. Main conclusions The beetle fauna found in the canopies of N. dombeyi, N. obliqua and A. araucana was large (600+ species), with about half of the species undescribed. Schao was found to vary with sample size and to give lower estimates of S than species attenuation curves, raising the possibility that the two methods are estimating the sizes of different statistical communities. It is possible that the attenuation curve is estimating the number of species to be found on a particular tree species, while Schao is estimating the ‘carrying capacity’ for beetle species of individual trees, and this varies from tree to tree. Care also needs to be taken in experimental design when monitoring temporal changes in forest insect communities given the difference in communities found between years in this study. The proportions of phytophages, saprophages and xylophages resemble those of a ‘Gondwanan’ rain forest from Australia and differ significantly from those of tropical and temperate ‘Laurasian’ forests.  相似文献

Three vagrant (Circinaria hispida, Circinaria gyrosa, and Circinaria sp. ‘paramerae’) and one crustose (semi‐vagrant, Circinaria sp. ‘oromediterranea’) lichens growing in very continental areas in the Iberian Peninsula were selected to study the phycobiont diversity. Mycobiont identification was checked using nrITS DNA barcoding: Circinaria sp. ‘oromediterranea’ and Circinaria sp. ‘paramerae’ formed a new clade. Phycobiont diversity was analyzed in 50 thalli of Circinaria spp. using nrITS DNA and LSU rDNA, with microalgae coexistence being found in all the species analyzed by Sanger sequencing. The survey of phycobiont diversity showed up to four different Trebouxia spp. as the primary phycobiont in 20 thalli of C. hispida, in comparison with the remaining Circinaria spp., where only one Trebouxia was the primary microalga. In lichen species showing coexistence, some complementary approaches are needed (454 pyrosequencing and/or ultrastructural analyses). Five specimens were selected for high‐throughput screening (HTS) analyses: 22 Trebouxia OTUs were detected, 10 of them not previously known. TEM analyses showed three different cell morphotypes (Trebouxia sp. OTU A12, OTU S51, and T. cretacea) whose ultrastructure is described here in detail for the first time. HTS revealed a different microalgae pool in each species studied, and we cannot assume a specific pattern between these pools and the ecological and/or morphological characteristics. The mechanisms involved in the selection of the primary phycobiont and the other microalgae by the mycobiont are unknown, and require complex experimental designs. The systematics of the genus Circinaria is not yet well resolved, and more analyses are needed to establish a precise delimitation of the species.  相似文献

In dryland ecosystems and other harsh environments, a large part of the vegetation is often clustered, appearing as ‘islands’. If ‘independent’ species, usually colonizers, can be distinguished from species which are ‘dependent’ on the presence of the colonizing species for successful establishment and/or persistence, the type of spatial pattern of the association ‐ isotropic (spatially symmetric) or anisotropic (spatially asymmetric) ‐ can give information on the underlying environmental factors driving the process of association. Modified spatial pattern analysis based on Ripley's K‐function can be applied to bivariate clustered patterns by cardinal direction in order to detect possible anisotropy in the pattern of association. The method was applied to mapped distribution patterns of two types of semi‐arid shrubland in southeastern Spain. In shrubland of Retama sphaerocarpa, low shrubs of Artemisia barrelieri were significantly clustered under the canopy of the Retama shrubs in all four cardinal directions, suggesting an isotropic facilitation effect. In low shrubland dominated by Anthyllis cytisoides and Artemisia barrelieri, Anthyllis shrubs occurred more frequently than expected on the eastern side (and downslope) of an Artemisia shrub. The possible environmental factors driving the two association patterns are discussed and recommendations for further applications of the analytical method are given.  相似文献

We compared the distributions, abundances and ecological requirements of parthenogenetic lizard Darevskia ‘dahli’ and its bisexual progenitors, D. portschinskii and D. mixta, in Georgia. We developed a regression model relating the species abundances with the distribution of climates. Darevskia portschinskii lives in warmer and drier climates than D. mixta; D. ‘dahli’ has the intermediate requirements. Temperature is more important than humidity for D. portschinskii, humidity is more important for D. mixta and both temperature and humidity are important for D. ‘dahli’. Suitable habitats of all three species overlap broadly; however, the observed ranges partly overlap only for D. ‘dahli’ and D. portschinskii. The observed abundance of each species, related to its predicted abundance, is lower at the sites with potential competitors. Darevskia ‘dahli’ occupies a higher proportion of the suitable habitats and has higher abundances than the progenitor species. Competition with D. ‘dahli’ is an important factor determining current distribution pattern of D. portschinskii and D. mixta. The parthenogen is a stronger competitor than the bisexual breeders and potential advantages of the bisexual reproduction remain unrealized in the given temporal and spatial scale. To explain domination of bisexually breeding lizards on the global scale, considering climate changes in geological timescale is necessary. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 101 , 447–460.  相似文献

Evolution of mimicry rings is reconstructed for the New World species of cotton-stainer bugs (Dysdercus, Hemiptera: Pyrrhocoridae). Using a cladistic analysis of 43 species (including D. silaceus Doesburg, 1968 stat. nov . and D. modestus Doesburg, 1968 stat. nov .), evolution of colour patterns and biogeographical history of the clade are hypothesized. Three probable mimicry rings are obtained from the analysis, together with data about their possible model–mimic or comimic–comimic structures: (a) ‘Yellow’ species in north-western South America and in the Andes (several possible models, D. rusticus, D. mimus part., D. imitator part., and D. collaris part. as mimics); (b) ‘Median Yellow–Black’ species with a median-forewing black pattern in north-western South America and Central America (several possible models, D. basialbus as a mimic); (c) ‘Median Red–Black’ species with a median-forewing black pattern in the Caribbean islands (D. andreae, D. discolor, D. neglectus–D. sanguinarius clade, and D. jamaicensis–D. fervidus–D. ocreatus clade as comimics). A few additional, less supported rings are also identified. Two highly polymorphic species (D. obscuratus, D. mimus) seem to enter different mimicry rings in different regions.  相似文献

Abstract. Electrophoretic keys are given for the six species of the Anopheles punctulatus complex (Diptera: Culicidae) known from Papua New Guinea plus An.farauti No. 2 and No. 3 from Australia. The categories ‘faster’, ‘standard’ and ‘slower’ are used in keys to relate allozyme band migration following cellulose acetate electrophoresis to the standard pattern. Alternative keys are given depending on the availability of different species for use as standards.  相似文献
