Several epidemiological studies have shown that about 25 per cent of hip fractures and 20 per cent of symptomatic vertebral fractures occur in men. The lifetime risk of hip fracture was estimated to be about 6 to 8 per cent and the risk of any osteoporotic fracture was estimated to be about 18 per cent in 50-year-old white men. In about 60% of cases in men, bone loss is secondary to several pathological conditions, such as long-term steroid therapy, severe hypogonadism, smoking or alcohol abuse or gastrointestinal disorders. In 40% of cases, osteoporosis is primary or idiopathic in men between the ages of 40 and 60 years. Genetic factors, a defect of boneforming cells or abnormal serum levels of bioavailable sex steroids could explain bone loss and fragility fractures in these men. It has been shown that hypogonadism is associated with a marked increase in bone remodelling and particularly in bone resorption with a dramatic loss in trabecular bone. It is now known that testosterone is partly transformed into estradiol by aromatase. Testosterone may therefore act on bone in two ways: it directly stimulates bone formation and estradiol regulates bone remodelling and inhibits bone resorption. Finally, in men over the age of 60 without hypogonadism, it has been shown that bone mineral density and fracture risk were better correlated with serum levels of bioavailable estradiol and Sex Hormone Binding Globulin than with serum testosterone levels.  相似文献

We present a taphonomic study of bones that have passed though the digestive tracts of free-ranging chimpanzees from the Kibale Forest in Uganda. The bone assemblage can be characterized as having a very low species diversity; low number of identifiable specimens (NISP) per scat; bones extremely broken up (very small size range); skeletal part frequencies similar in some ways to those resulting from carnivore partial digestion; and sometimes articulated specimens. Modifications to the bones include corrosion, tiny tooth scores and pits, cracking, and fraying of bone edges. Together, these characteristics suggest that hominoid bone digestion may be recognizable, despite some similarities with leopard-, canid-, and eagle-modified bone. Chimpanzees are well-documented hunters of medium-sized vertebrates such as monkeys. This is significant in the study of human evolution if, as it seems, the last common ancestor of chimpanzees and humans was chimpanzee-like. It suggests there was a pre-stone-tool-using hunting phase in human evolution, perhaps by australopiths or the last common ancestor. Taphonomically, pre-stone tool meat eating has been very difficult to detect in the fossil record. However, if chimpanzees leave a recognizable taphonomic signature on the bones of their prey, we will be able to look for analogous signatures in fossil bones associated with fossil hominoids and hominids.  相似文献

Five pregnant female growing rats have been orbited for five days aboard the Cosmos 1514 soviet biological satellite. They were compared to five female rats kept in vivarium and five female conditioned rats in synchronised way. Histomorphometric studies were performed in order to investigate: 1. The early effects of weightlessness on the bone mass in loading (tibiae and femur) and unloading bones (thoracic and lumbar vertebrae). 2. The changes of osteoblastic and osteoclastic activities. A short exposure does not induce changes in the bone mass and the inner structure of loading and unloading bones. These results fit in well with human data available in the literature: they show that weightlessness doesn't change bone mass in the early phase of a spaceflight. However extrapolation of animal results to men is discussed. In unloading bones (vertebrae) osteoblastic activity was not measurable. Osteoclasts detected by histoenzymologic method don't change as far as their number per mm3 of trabecular bone is concerned. However the number per mm2 of trabecular area increases. It seems likely that an increase of the osteoclastic population occurs in trabecular bone. In loading bones, formation activity (appreciated by the measurement of osteoid seam thickness) and total osteoclastic resorption surfaces were not modified. The objective of this study was to evaluate bone resistance after in ovo administration of copper nanoparticles (NanoCu) and to determine the number of cells positive for proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) in the femoral bones of broiler chickens (n = 12 per group). The study demonstrated that femoral bones from the NanoCu group were characterised by a higher weight and volume and by significantly greater resistance to fractures compared to the Control group. NanoCu promoted the proliferation of PCNA-positive cells in the long bones of chickens. A significantly higher number of PCNA-positive cells in the bones of birds in the NanoCu group compared with the Control group (137 and 122, respectively) indicate a stimulatory effect during embryogenesis. Considering the improvement in bone resistance to fractures and the effect of NanoCu on the number of PCNA-positive cells in femoral bones, NanoCu may be an alternative agent to minimise the ever-present problem of weak bones in broiler chickens.  相似文献

The author report clinical experience with 212 cases of mammary cancer metastatic to bone, in 186 of which radiotherapy was given, and in 26 steroid hormone therapy.At least 70 per cent of patients with bone metastasis from breast cancer were relieved of pain by adequate roentgen therapy, the relief lasting for most of the survival time in many instances.About 25 per cent of patients had recalcification or reossification of bony lesions with roentgen therapy; while dramatic, this is not always an indication that relief of pain will continue or that survival time will be lengthened.If and when adequate radiotherapy has not been effective or cannot be administered (for example, in a patient with extremely widespread metastasis, or one residing at a considerable distance from radiotherapeutic service) steroid hormone therapy in adequate dosage is frequently beneficial. From 40 per cent to 75 per cent of patients with bone metastases from breast cancer are relieved of pain by steroid hormone therapy. In about 15 per cent of cases recalcification of the lesion occurs.Effective roentgen therapy may usually be given in a relatively brief period of time (one to two weeks). Effective steroid hormone therapy usually requires from 12 to 24 weeks.Complications of steroid hormone therapy are numerous. Some patients are made considerably worse by such therapy. These complications may only be controlled by reduction or discontinuation of the hormones. For this reason, it is recommended that irradiation always be used as the initial method of palliation.  相似文献

The influence of pregnancy on bone tissue metabolism is not completely understood. Caffeine also has a potentially negative influence on bones. The aim of this study was the evaluation of changes in the bones of pregnant rats under the influence of caffeine. The experiment was carried out on Wistar rats. The evaluation of rats' bone tissue quality was performed based on bone density measurements and resistance examinations. It analyzed the impact of caffeine on the degree of bone tissue mineralization and the composition of the bones. The mean value of pelvises 'wet' and 'dry' densities in a group of pregnant rats with caffeine intake was lower compared to the control group. The deformation in maximal load point of the femur shaft in the experimental group was significantly higher than in the control group. In the experimental group, the percentage of water in the bones was significantly higher, while the content of inorganic phase was significantly lower compared to the control group. The changes of biomechanical parameters in the group of pregnant rats with caffeine intake indicate its negative influence on the bone. Our results show higher plasticization of the bone shafts of the animals under the influence of caffeine. Higher deformation of bone shafts may have an effect on the statics of the skeleton. The administration of caffeine significantly affected the quantitative composition of the bone.  相似文献

It is shown that thrombin (0.1–7 units/ml) stimulates calcium mobilization and bone matrix degradation, as indicated by release of [3H]proline, from cultured calvarial bones. The second finding in this paper, that indomethacin blocks the stimulating effect of thrombin on bone resorption, is consistent with the concept that prostaglandin synthesis may be involved in this process. It is suggested that thrombin is a potential mediator of bone resorption associated with inflammatory and malignant processes.  相似文献

For individualization of a biomechanical model, it is necessary to estimate the muscle attachments of the person to whom it is to be adapted. One of the methods to estimate muscle attachments is to use model transformations to transform a model with known muscle attachments to the bones of a person. We hypothesize that the location and shape of muscle attachment sites correlate with the shape of the bones they are attached to. If this hypothesis holds, it is possible to predict the location of muscle attachments when the shape of the bones is known. To validate this hypothesis, geometric models of three sets of shoulder bones were built. These models consist of 3-D surface models of the scapula, clavicle, and humerus, with the muscle attachment contours connected to them. By means of geometric transformations, the models were transformed, so the muscle attachments of the different data sets could be compared. Using these techniques, 50 per cent of the muscle attachment contours could be predicted with high accuracy. The muscle attachment contours that could not be predicted were all influenced by measurement errors. For 30 per cent of the muscle attachment contours, it was not possible to distinguish the interindividual differences from the inaccuracies of the method used. From this study, we concluded that most muscle attachment contours can be predicted by means of geometric models of the bones.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare the structural properties of a new vs. established design of composite replicate femurs and tibias. The new design has a cortical bone analog consisting of short-glass-fiber-reinforced (SGFR) epoxy, rather than the fiberglass-fabric-reinforced (FFR) epoxy in the currently available design. The hypothesis was that this new cortical bone analog would improve the uniformity of structural properties between specimens, while having mean stiffness values in the range of natural human bones. The composite replicate bones were tested under bending, axial, and torsional loads. In general, the new SGFR bones were significantly less stiff than the FFR bones, although both bone designs reasonably approximated the structural stiffnesses of natural human bones. With the exceptions of the FFR bone axial tests, the highest variability between specimens was 6.1%. The new SGFR bones had similar variability in structural properties when compared to the FFR bones under bending and torsional loading, but had significantly less variability under axial loading. Differences in epiphyseal geometry between the FFR and SGFR bones, and subsequent seating in the testing fixtures, may account for some of the differences in structural properties; axial stiffness was especially dependent on bone alignment. Stiffness variabilities for the composite replicate bones were much smaller than those seen with natural human bones. Axial strain distribution along the proximal-medial SGFR femur had a similar shape to what was observed on natural human femurs by other investigators, but was considerably less stiff in the more proximal locations.  相似文献

Strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were isolated from patients treated in the Centre of Thermal Affections in 1985-1989. It was shown that 72.9, 59.3, 33.8 and 54.2 per cent of the isolates were sensitive to cefotaxime, tobramycin, gentamicin and polymyxin, respectively. The study of pathogenicity factors of the isolates revealed that 83 per cent of the strains produced thermolabile enterotoxin, 79.6 per cent of the strains had adhesive activity and 71.1 per cent of the strains produced hemolysin. The study detected combinations of various pathogenicity factors. 42.3 per cent of the isolates had both adhesive and enterotoxigenic properties. Adhesiveness and hemolytic activity were shown by 13.5 per cent of the strains. 16.9 per cent of the strains produced both enterotoxin and hemolysin. Adhesive activity, enterotoxigenicity and hemolysin production were observed in 6.7 per cent of the strains. It was noted that the strains of P. aeruginosa resistant to polymyxin mainly produced enterotoxin (18.6 per cent) and those resistant to cefotaxime had adhesive activity (34.0 per cent).  相似文献

Cefoperazone is a semisynthetic cephalosporin of the 3rd generation (cefobid, Pfizer, USA). It was used in monotherapy of 12 oncological patients during ++post-cytostatic aplasia of the bone marrow and peripheral pancytopenia after bone marrow transplantation. The results were favourable in 67 per cent of the patients: the body temperature normalized and no signs of any infection were evident. In 25 per cent of the patients the monotherapy failed and it was necessary to combine cefoperazone with aminoglycosides. Therefore, cefoperazone proved to be an efficient antibacterial drug, whose use was possible in the monotherapy of oncological patients after transplantation of the bone marrow.  相似文献

Finite element analysis is a powerful tool for predicting the mechanical behaviour of complex biological structures like bones, but to be confident in the results of an analysis, the model should be validated against experimental data. In such validation experiments, the strains in the loaded bones are usually measured with strain gauges glued to the bone surface, but the use of strain gauges on bone can be difficult and provides only very limited data regarding surface strain distributions. This study applies the full-field strain measurement technique of digital speckle pattern interferometry to measure strains in a loaded human mandible and compares the results with the predictions of voxel-based finite element models of the same specimen. It is found that this novel strain measurement technique yields consistent, reliable measurements. Further, strains predicted by the finite element analysis correspond well with the experimental data. These results not only confirm the usefulness of this technique for future validation studies in the field of bone mechanics, but also show that the modelling approach used in this study is able to predict the experimental results very accurately.  相似文献

(1) The mean delta18O(BP) ( per thousandSMOW) for any given bone sampled from captive alligators maintained at high constant temperature was lower (indicative of higher temperatures of bone deposition) than that of the same bone from wild alligators caught in Northern Florida, but these differences were only greater than two standard deviations from the mean for the thoracic vertebrae and metatarsal bones. (2) Inter-bone variability of delta18O(BP) ( per thousandSMOW) was similar for captive alligators maintained at constant temperatures and the wild alligators, but intra-bone variability was much greater in wild alligators. (3) The order of mean delta18O(BP) ( per thousandSMOW) of bones (from highest to lowest) differed between treatment groups. However, intra-bone variability obscured the significance of those differences. Nevertheless, the thoracic vertebra had the highest mean delta18O(BP) ( per thousandSMOW), indicative of lower temperatures, and the lowest variability of bones in both groups of alligators. Conversely, the tibia was one of the warmest and more variable bones in both groups of alligators. (4) The pattern of delta18O(BP) ( per thousandSMOW) values across sites within long bones were identical between alligator treatment groups for the femur and humerus but differed between groups for the tibia and metatarsus, and differed between different long bones. The predicted intra-bone pattern for long bones of increasing delta18O(BP) ( per thousandSMOW) indicative of lower temperatures in more distal sampling sites was only obtained from the femurs. (5) Paired cortical and cancellous bone samples from the same site from all individuals in both treatment groups were available for proximal humeri and distal femurs. delta18O(BP) ( per thousandSMOW) values from cortical bone were more variable than those from cancellous bone for both bones. (6) Cortical bone had lower delta18O(BP) ( per thousandSMOW) values indicative of warmer temperatures than cancellous bone at sites sampled on the proximal humeri and distal femurs of all three animals from both treatment groups.  相似文献

Recently, fluoride has been used in the treatment of osteoporosis in an attempt to rebuild bone lost due to this disease. Fluoride has been shown to have a profound effect on osteoblasts and bone formation. Studies have shown that synthetic fluorapatite is more stable and less soluble than hydroxyapatite. This study was designed to determine the dissolution properties of bones from rats fed a normal diet versus rats fed a high fluoride diet. Intact and deproteinized bones were dissolved in buffered solutions, containing physiological amounts of inorganic Ca and P, at pH 3.4, 4.4 and 5.4 The data demonstrate that fluoridated bones dissolve slower than normal bones, deproteinized bones dissolve faster than intact bones and that the initial rate of dissolution of fluoridated bone is always significantly lower than that of normal bone. This may help to explain the reduced rate of osteoclastic resorption in patients undergoing fluoride therapy.  相似文献

Tubular anomalous bones were found in both thighs of a 6-year-old male long-tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis) bred in captivity. The bones had jagged ends and protruded from the skin. Radiographs showed that they developed in the femurs at the middle and elongated. They were removed with surgery under anesthesia. Histological analysis revealed that these bones had the same histological structure as the femur, though they were composed of primary and secondary osteon regions. This finding indicated that the new bones developed from the old bone piece(s), acquired a tubular shape, and elongated. It is suggested that the anomalous bones were produced not by the congenital deformity but by regeneration from fragments of the fractured femur that were embedded in the bone marrow; these acquired a tubular pattern and elongated.  相似文献

Knowledge of hind foot bone motion is important for understanding gait as well as various foot pathologies, but the three-dimensional (3D) motion of these bones remains incompletely understood. The purpose of this study was to quantify the motion of the talus, calcaneus, navicular, and cuboid in normal adult feet during open chain quasi-static uniplanar plantar flexion motion. Magnetic resonance images of the right feet of six normal young adult males were taken from which 3D virtual models were made of each hind foot bone. The 3D motion of these models was analyzed. Each hind foot bone rotated in the same plane about half as much as the foot (mean 0.54 degrees of bone rotation per degree of foot motion, range 0.40-0.73 degrees per degree of foot motion as measured relative to the fixed tibia). Talar motion was primarily uniaxial, but the calcaneus, navicular, and cuboid bones exhibited biplanar (sometimes triplanar) translation in addition to biaxial rotation. Net translational motions of these bones averaged 0.39 mm of bone translation per degree of foot motion (range 0.06-0.62 mm per degree of foot motion). These data reflect the functional anatomy of the foot, extend the findings of prior studies, provide a standard for comparison to patients with congenital or acquired foot deformities, and establish an objective reference for quantitatively assessing the efficacy of various hind foot therapies.  相似文献

Plio-Pleistocene faunal assemblages from Swartkrans Cave (South Africa) preserve large numbers of primate remains. Brain, C.K., 1981. The Hunters or the Hunted? An Introduction to African Cave Taphonomy. University of Chicago Press, Chicago suggested that these primate subassemblages might have resulted from a focus by carnivores on primate predation and bone accumulation. Brain's hypothesis prompted us to investigate, in a previous study, this taphonomic issue as it relates to density-mediated destruction of primate bones (J. Archaeol. Sci. 29, 2002, 883). Here we extend our investigation of Brain's hypothesis by examining additional intrinsic qualities of baboon bones and their role as mediators of skeletal element representation in carnivore-created assemblages. Using three modern adult baboon skeletons, we collected data on four intrinsic bone qualities (bulk bone mineral density, maximum length, volume, and cross-sectional area) for approximately 81 bones per baboon skeleton. We investigated the relationship between these intrinsic bone qualities and a measure of skeletal part representation (the percentage minimum animal unit) for baboon bones in carnivore refuse and scat assemblages. Refuse assemblages consist of baboon bones not ingested during ten separate experimental feeding episodes in which individual baboon carcasses were fed to individual captive leopards and a spotted hyena. Scat assemblages consist of those baboon bones recovered in carnivore regurgitations and feces resulting from the feeding episodes. In refuse assemblages, volume (i.e., size) was consistently the best predictor of element representation, while cross-sectional area was the poorest predictor in the leopard refuse assemblage and bulk bone mineral density (i.e., a measure of the proportion of cortical to trabecular bone) was the poorest predictor in the hyena refuse assemblage. In light of previous documentation of carnivore-induced density-mediated destruction to bone assemblages, we interpret the current findings as suggestive of the secondary importance of bulk bone mineral density to other intrinsic qualities of skeletal elements (e.g., size, maximum dimension, and average cross-sectional area). It is only when skeletal elements are too large for consumption (e.g., many long bones) that they are fragmented following intra-element patterns of density-mediated carnivore destruction. There appears to be a size threshold beneath which bulk bone mineral density contributes little to mediating carnivore destruction of carcasses. Thus, depending on body size of the predator, body size of the prey, and specific size of the element, bulk bone mineral density may play little or no role of primary importance in mediating the destruction of skeletal elements. We compare patterns in modern comparative assemblages to patterns in primate fossil assemblages from Swartkrans. One of the fossil assemblages, Swartkrans Member 1, Hanging Remnant, most closely approximates a hyena (possibly refuse) assemblage pattern, while the Swartkrans Member 2 assemblage most closely approximates a leopard (possibly scat) assemblage pattern. The Swartkrans Member 1, Lower Bank, assemblage does not closely approximate any of our modern comparative assemblage patterns.  相似文献

Limb bones are liable to fail by fatigue, due to stresses imposed repeatedly in activities such as running. They may also be broken by larger stresses which occur occasionally in accidents. Too weak a bone will probably fail but too strong a bone is unduly heavy. A mathematical model predicts optimum strengths for bones subject to the hazards both of fatigue and of accidents. When accidents are mild and predictable, fatigue is the more important hazard. When they are large and unpredictable they are the more important hazard and stronger bones are generally preferred, but in extreme cases it may become advantageous to dispense with the bone. There is a restricted range of circumstances in which fatigue and accidents are both important hazards. The strengths of many limb bones seem surprisingly low, in the light of the theory and of current knowledge of the fatigue properties of bone.  相似文献

The idea for the study presented in Spanish Legacies: the coming of age of the second generation was sparked by the series of unrests from immigrant youths in a number of cities across Europe. The discontent expressed by the young generation of immigrants presented a sharp indicator of how little is known about young people of foreign origin growing up as immigrant residents in Europe, despite their significant number (10 per cent in France, 13 per cent in Spain and 15 per cent in Ireland by 2010). The success or failure of immigrants’ integrational processes, considering cultural factors and language barriers as challenges experienced by immigrants, can have major political and social impact on the regions where they reside. The polarographic behaviour of trichothecin was studied. It was shown that the antibiotic could be detected in solutions at concentrations of 7.10(-7) moles with the help of the polarographic method. Conditions for the polarographic determination of trichothecin in fermentation broth were developed. The error was not more than 3 per cent. The reliability of the results was shown by statistical treatment of data performed in accordance with the requirement of the USSR State Pharmacopeia, X ed., prescribing that the precision of the assay is such that the fiducial limits at p = 95 per cent deviate from the average value by not more than 5 per cent. Comparison of the results of trichothecin determination in the fermentation broth with the polarographic and biological methods showed no significant difference. Therefore, the polarographic method may be recommended for trichothecin determination in the fermentation broth.  相似文献
