Pollen movements and mating patterns are key features that influence population genetic structure. When gene flow is low, small populations are prone to increased genetic drift and inbreeding, but naturally disjunct species may have features that reduce inbreeding and contribute to their persistence despite genetic isolation. Using microsatellite loci, we investigated outcrossing levels, family mating parameters, pollen dispersal, and spatial genetic structure in three populations of Hakea oldfieldii, a fire‐sensitive shrub with naturally disjunct, isolated populations prone to reduction in size and extinction following fires. We mapped and genotyped a sample of 102 plants from a large population, and all plants from two smaller populations (28 and 20 individuals), and genotyped 158–210 progeny from each population. We found high outcrossing despite the possibility of geitonogamous pollination, small amounts of biparental inbreeding, a limited number of successful pollen parents within populations, and significant correlated paternity. The number of pollen parents for each seed parent was moderate. There was low but significant spatial genetic structure up to 10 m around plants, but the majority of successful pollen came from outside this area including substantial proportions from distant plants within populations. Seed production varied among seven populations investigated but was not correlated with census population size. We suggest there may be a mechanism to prevent self‐pollination in H. oldfieldii and that high outcrossing and pollen dispersal within populations would promote genetic diversity among the relatively small amount of seed stored in the canopy. These features of the mating system would contribute to the persistence of genetically isolated populations prone to fluctuations in size.  相似文献

Summary Experimental pollinations of Costus allenii (Zingiberaceae) were conducted to assess the effects of pollen composition on fitness. Plants were selfed, outcrossed with the first nearest neighbor, and outcrossed with pollen mixtures obtained from the nearest 2, 3, and 5 plants. Cross type had a significant effect on seed production, seed weight and total-plant dry weight. Progeny from crosses with 3, and 5 parents grew significantly larger than selfed progeny, or those from 1-parent crosses. Competition experiments indicated the superiority of progeny from 3-, and 5-parent crosses over progeny from 1-parent crosses, but no differences in competitive ability were observed between progeny from 3-, and 5-parent crosses. Relative fitness, based on 1) seed production, 2) percent germination, and 3) dry weight, varied significantly among crosses, and was greatest for crosses with 3 parents and lowest for selfs. The relative fitness of progeny from 5-parent crosses was lower than that of all other outcrossed classes. We suggest that the significant effect of pollen composition on fitness results from variation in the genetic similarity of seed and pollen parents, which is a function of spatial distribution and population structure.  相似文献

Traits related to allocation of resources to sexual and asexual reproduction, together with seed production, were scored on Allium vineale plants sampled from five sites in southern Sweden during a period of 4 years. In addition, random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) fingerprinting of the sampled plants allowed the identification of genets. Integration of genetic and phenotypic data from field and greenhouse provided for the analysis of among‐year, among‐site, and among‐genet variance components. These variance components were taken to represent the influences of short‐term environmental changes, persistent site divergence, and within‐site genet differences, respectively. It was shown that differences among sites and among genets explained a large part of the phenotypic variation of allocation traits, whereas among‐year differences had a larger influence on the variation in seed production. Together, the results support the conclusions of a recent model on the evolution of mixed reproductive systems, that predicts a stable balance between sexual and asexual reproduction because of annual fluctuations in fecundity through the two modes.  相似文献

In the present study, corn meal agar was found as the best medium for growth of Drechslera spicifera, a pathogen of water hyacinth. Small water hyacinth plants exhibited a smaller number of lesions/leaf when inoculated with D. spicifera compared with inoculated medium and large plants. However, percentage total diseased area/leaf was almost the same among the different plant sizes. The pathogen did not interfere with the vegetative plant growth, since, both infected and healthy water hyacinth plants of the same age showed similar percentages of new leaf growth. Leaf diffusates of water hyacinth plants significantly reduced conidiospore germination in D. spicifera.  相似文献

Tests for transmission of four potato viruses through potato true seed   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The Andean potato calico strain of tobacco ringspot virus (TRSV-Ca) was detected in 2–9% of potato seedlings grown from true seed from plants of cv. Cara and clone G5998(6) infected with TRSV-Ca. Similarly, a potato isolate of the oca strain of arracacha virus B (AVB-O) was detected in 4–12% of progeny seedlings of cv. Cara and clone D42/8 infected with AVB-O. Potato virus T (PVT) passed through 33–59% of seed from PVT-infected cv. Cara, but only 0–2% infection was detected in seedlings from seed of PVT-infected clone D42/8. By contrast, no infection was detected in seedlings grown from seed from plants of G5998(6), D42/8 or cv. Cara infected with Andean potato latent virus strains Hu (APLV-Hu) or Caj (APLV-Caj), although both strains passed through seed of Nicotiana clevelandii. AVB-O, PVT and TRSV-Ca were detected in all tests of pollen from flowers of infected potato plants, but APLV-Hu and APLV-Caj were detected less frequently. AVB-O and PVT were transmitted through 2% and 8% respectively, of seed from healthy potato plants pollinated with pollen from infected plants. However, no transmission through seed was detected when pollen from TRSV-Ca infected plants was used. None of the four viruses were transmitted to healthy potato plants pollinated with pollen from infected plants. APLV-Hu caused exceptionally severe symptoms in the cv. Cara plants used for seed production, but the Bolivian strain of PVT induced only mild symptoms rather than the severe systemic necrosis previously reported for the type of strain of PVT in this cultivar. No symptoms developed in potato seedlings infected with TRSV-Ca, AVB-O or PVT through the seed.  相似文献

Interactions between the mycorrhizal fungus Glomus monosporum and the root rot pathogen Thielaviopsis basicola and their effects on tobacco plants were investigated over a 4 week period. Mycorrhizal tobacco plants, obtained by preinoculation with G. monosporum, showed a better tolerance to T. basicola than non-mycorrhizal seedlings. Root and leaf dry weights of mycorrhizal plants were greater than those of controls. Mycorrhizal plants inoculated with T. basicola showed higher root and leaf dry weights than non-mycorrhizal infected plants, but lower values than mycorrhizal plants which were not infected. No appreciable differences in free aminoacid composition were observed among the different treatments with two exceptions: proline content was higher in infected and mycorrhizal infected plants compared to control and mycorrhizal plants; arginine content was higher in infected and mycorrhizal infected plants compared to control and mycorrhizal plants; arginine content was higher in mycorrhizal plants than in all the other treatments. The mechanisms by which (VAM) fungi can reduce disease incidence and pathogen development are discussed.  相似文献

Seed-transmission of nematode-borne viruses   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Transmission through seed of crop and weed plants seems to be characteristic of nematode-borne viruses. It occurred with tomato black ring virus (TBRV) in nineteen species (thirteen botanical families), with arabis mosaic virus (AMV) in thirteen species (eleven families), with raspberry ringspot virus (RRV) in six species (five families), and also, in more limited tests, with tomato ringspot, cherry leaf roll and tobacco rattle viruses. A remarkable feature was that infected seedlings, except those containing tobacco rattle virus, often appeared healthy. The occurrence and extent of seed-transmission depended on both the virus and the host plant. In many progenies more than 10%, and in some 100%, of seedlings were infected. The viruses were transmitted through at least two or three generations of seed of those host species tested. After 6 years' storage, TBRV- and RRV-containing seed of Capsella bursa-pastoris and Stellaria media germinated to give infected seedlings. In controlled crossing experiments with strawberry and raspberry, virus was transmitted to seed from both male and female parents but, at least in raspberry, the presence of competing virus-free pollen much decreased the ability of pollen from infected plants to set seed. There was no evidence that healthy mother plants became infected when their flowers were pollinated with infected pollen.  相似文献

Titanotrichum oldhamii produces both flowers and asexual bulbils on its inflorescences. However, field observations and herbarium collections indicate that seed set is infrequent and that most reproduction is from vegetative bulbils. We have investigated the failure of sexual reproduction and identified four major causes: (1) in the wild, the seed:ovule ratio for open pollination was only 1.9%, in contrast to 10.1% for artificial cross-pollination, implying poor pollinator services. (2) The overall reproductive success was 5–10 times greater in glasshouse pollination treatments compared to field treatments. This suggests suboptimal environmental conditions for seed set in natural habitats, which may eliminate natural seed set completely. (3) Pollination experiments showed that outcrossed populations set significantly more seed and had higher germination rates than intra-populational and self crosses, in both field and glasshouse experiments. T. oldhamii thus appears to benefit from wide outcrossing. Pollen transfer between populations, however, seems to be infrequent because of the rarity and scattered distribution of Titanotrichum populations. (4) Flowers near the apex of the inflorescence are less likely to set seed, especially late in the season when inflorescences convert to bulbil production. In these late flowers, pollen tubes showed poor guidance as they approach the micropyle of the ovules. Even under optimal glasshouse conditions, the average outcrossing success was only 0.229. Almost one-half of the ovules remained undeveloped and 13.5% of ovules aborted after pollination, indicating a strong shift of resource allocation toward vegetative bulbils and rhizome development. Efficient reproduction from asexual bulbils may thus have released Titanotrichum from strong selection for efficient sexual reproduction. However, occasional seed set observed in the wild may be very important for maintaining some genetic diversity in populations, and promoting overall fitness.  相似文献

Most orchids studied thus far show long‐term resource adjustments to increases in fruit production within a flowering season, but none of these offers rewards to their potential pollinators. If nectar production is energetically expensive, then resources utilized to produce fruits and seeds may be even more limited in pollinator‐rewarding orchids than in non‐rewarding ones. Thus, resource adjustments may be more dramatic or entirely different in nectar producing plants. In this study, we performed artificial hand‐pollinations for two consecutive flowering seasons in die nectar producing orchid Comparettia falcata, and tested whether or not fruit set, seed set, and seed viability were limited by the quantity of pollinations or by resources. In addition, we compared mechanisms of short‐term (fruit abortion within seasons) and long‐term consequences (percent change in leaf length and change in flower number per plant between seasons, probability of shoot and inflorescence production, and mortality) between hand‐ pollinated and unmanipulated plants. The relationships among plant traits related to vegetative size and reproduction also were examined. Hand‐pollinations showed some negative effects. Fruit set was higher in hand‐pollinated plants in the first season but was similar to the controls in the second. Seed set was significantly lower and abortions were higher than in unmanipulated plants. On the other hand, some of our measurements were unaffected by die hand‐pollination treatment. Unexpectedly, there were no significant differences between groups in percent change in leaf length, change in flower number per plant between seasons, or die probability of shoot and inflorescence production. Although there was a strong correlation between leaf size and die number of flowers produced within a season, associations between leaf size and traits related to current or future reproduction were not consistent. Like other epiphytic orchids, pollination limitation occurred within a single season in C. falcata., but increases in fruit production also resulted in reduced lifetime fitness as estimated by a compounded fitness index. Contrary to all other epiphytic orchids studied, long‐term adjustments to increased fruit production in C. falcata through reduction in future growth or flower and inflorescence production were either minor or lacking. Our results suggest that the nature of plant strategies associated with resource constraints during sexual reproduction may be dependent on whether or not plants have evolved traits that are costly.  相似文献

Density dependent processes are known to influence reproduction and establishment of plant populations. In this study, we evaluated the effects of local density and sexual expression on the reproductive success of the rare palm species Geonoma epetiolata in Costa Rica. We classified individuals in two density categories based on distances to the two nearest neighbors and recorded the occurrence of sexual overlap on each individual. Overlap between pistillate and staminate flowers in monoecious plants allows geitonogamous pollination, potentially reducing dependence on mates for reproduction. We measured plant size and light availability, and evaluated the influence of these variables on pollination success, fruit production, fruit abortion and seed mass. Pollination success significantly increased with density but there was no effect of sexual overlap. In contrast, there was no effect of density on the probability of initiated fruit, and a negative effect on fruit set. Fruit abortion was lowest in isolated plants with no sexual overlap. Plant size and light did not contribute to variation in reproductive success. In conclusion, the pollination advantage of plants in dense neighborhoods does not compensate reproductive losses incurred by fruit abortion, possibly due to mating among genetically related individuals. Geonoma epetiolata is threatened by habitat loss and poaching of seeds for the horticultural market. High fruit abortion rates associated with density in G. epetiolata suggest that seed collections from the remnant wild populations of this palm species may cause bottlenecks that further threaten population viability.  相似文献

The relationship between vertically transmitted asexual fungal grass endophytes and their hosts is considered to be mutualistic. Results from agronomic field support this line of reasoning but recent studies have shown more variable results in natural systems. We investigated how high and low nutrient and water treatments affected biomass allocation patterns of endophyte‐infected and uninfected Festuca pratensis and F. rubra in greenhouse experiments over two growing seasons. Irrespective of infection status, both grass species showed improved performance on highly fertilized and watered soils. However, infected F. pratensis plants produced larger tillers than endophyte‐free plants on soil low in nutrients and water in the first growing season, although they (E+) otherwise showed decreased performance on nutrient‐poor soil. In low nutrient and water conditions, endophyte‐infected plants produced less tillers and had lower total biomass compared to uninfected plants, and displayed a negative phenotypic correlation between seed production and vegetative growth. The latter indicates costs of reproduction when the plant shares common resources with the fungal endophyte. However, endophyte infection status (E+, E?) interacted significantly with the soil fertilisation in terms of plant growth, having a stronger positive effect on growth in infected F. pratensis plants. In F. rubra, endophyte‐infected plants showed higher vegetative growth in fertilized and watered soils compared to uninfected plants. However, infected plants tended to produce fewer inflorescences. This had no effect on seed production, perhaps because seed production was partly replaced by asexual pseudovivipary. Contrary to the general assumption in the literature that fungal endophytes are plant mutualists, these findings suggest that the costs of endophytes may outweigh their benefits in resource limited conditions. However, the costs of endophyte infections appear to differ among the grass species studied; costs of endophytes were mainly detected in F. pratensis under low nutrient conditions. We propose that differences in response to endophyte infection in these species may depend on the differences in life‐history strategies and environmental requirements of these two fescue and fungal species and may change during the life span of the plant.  相似文献

Seven genotypes of sunflower, including populations and hybrids, showing differential susceptibility to Alternaria leaf and stem blight were crossed to CMS 234A with pollen selection and without pollen selection. The pathogen culture filtrate was used as selective pressure at stylar tissue by applying it 1 h before pollination. Distilled water applied to stigmas and styles served as control. Two sets of seven hybrids, one set from selective and the other from non-selective fertilization, were evaluated for reaction to Alternaria leaf and stem blight during the rainy season under natural epiphytotic conditions. Selection for resistant pollen on the stigmatic surface resulted in a corresponding increase in progeny resistance. The study demonstrates the transmission of the selected trait from the pollen generation to progeny. Further, it was observed that the effect of pollen selection was high in the progenies of moderately resistant parents compared to progenies of highly susceptible parents. The effect of successive pollen selection was studied by backcrossing the progeny derived through selective fertilization to the fertile parent using selective fertilization. Successive pollen selection further improved disease resistance of progeny. However, the improvement was not very great. Hence, repeated cycles of selection are required to achieve a useful level of resistance in the case of sunflower, since resistance is polygenetically controlled. • Self‐pollination by geitonogamy is likely in self‐compatible plants that simultaneously expose a large number of flowers to pollinators. However, progeny of these plants is often highly allogamous. Although mechanisms to increase cross‐pollination have been identified and studied, their relative importance has rarely been addressed simultaneously in plant populations.
  • We used Rosmarinus officinalis to explore factors that influence the probability of self‐fertilisation due to geitonogamy or that purge its consequences, focusing on their effects on seed germination and allogamy rate. We experimentally tested the effect of geitonogamy on the proportion of filled seeds and how it influences germination rate. During two field seasons, we studied how life history and flowering traits of individuals influence seed germination and allogamy rates of their progeny in wild populations at the extremes of the altitudinal range. The traits considered were plant size, population density, duration of the flowering season, number of open flowers, flowering synchrony among individuals within populations and proportion of male‐sterile flowers.
  • We found that most seeds obtained experimentally from self‐pollination were apparently healthy but empty, and that the proportion of filled seeds drove the differences in germination rate between self‐ and cross‐pollination experiments. Plants from wild populations consistently had low germination rate and high rate of allogamy, as determined with microsatellites. Germination rate related positively to the length of the flowering season, flowering synchrony and the ratio of male‐sterile flowers, whereas the rate of allogamous seedlings was positively related only to the ratio of male‐sterile flowers.
  • Rosemary plants purge most of the inbreeding caused by its pollination system by aborting the seeds. This study showed that the rates of seed germination and allogamy of the seedlings depend on a complex combination of factors that vary in space and time. Male sterility of flowers, length of the flowering season and flowering synchrony of individuals within populations all favour high rates of cross‐pollination, therefore increasing germination and allogamy rates. Flowering traits appear to be highly plastic and respond to local and seasonal conditions.

Apomixis is a form of asexual reproduction that in plants leads to the production of seed progeny that are exact copies of the mother individual. A mapping population generated by backcrossing a sexual with an apomictic genotype of Paspalum simplex, both at the tetraploid level, was used to find markers co-segregating with apomixis. Genetic analysis showed that apomixis is under the control of a single dominant allele assuming a random chromatid assortment. Five rice markers, mapped in the telomeric region of the long arm of rice chromosome 12, showed tight linkage with apomixis. Genetic and molecular data strongly indicate that the potentiality to express apomixis in P. simplex is given by a relatively large chromosome segment that is inherited as a single genetic unit.  相似文献

Knowledge of the virulence of a pathogen population and recognition of the risks of changes in the virulence spectrum are essential in breeding crops for disease resistance. Sexual recombination in a pathogen increases the level of genotypic diversity and can influence the virulence spectrum. This study aimed to determine how sexual recombination can change virulence of the barley pathogen Pyrenophora teres and whether the barley cultivation system, no‐tillage or normal tillage, influences P. teres virulence. The inheritance of avirulence/virulence in P. teres following sexual reproduction was studied in three artificially created pathogen populations. The first was a product of crossing two net forms of the pathogen, and the second and the third were products of crossing net and spot forms. None of the progeny generated resembled the parents exactly. The average similarity of the progeny isolates of the net by net cross with the parental type, based on avirulence/virulence tests, was 92%. That for net and spot form progenies was 58% in comparison with the net form parents and 73% with the spot form parents. The virulence reactions of the progeny isolates did not correlate with morphological traits of the isolates: growth rate on agar, spore production, spore width, spore length and numbers of septa per conidium. To study the effect of the barley cultivation method on P. teres virulence, 313 single‐spore cultures were obtained from barley fields. Two hundred and seventy‐six of the isolates represented the spot form and 37 represented the net form of P. teres. No association was established between the tillage method and virulence for either the net form or the spot form isolates.  相似文献

Wind pollination can provide reproductive insurance for animal‐pollinated dioecious plants in the absence of available pollinators, but combinations of insect and wind pollination (ambophily) have rarely been studied in hermaphrodite herbs. We examined the stable occurrence of insect pollination and wind pollination over 4 years in a population of a biennial Aconitum species (A. gymnandrum) with actinomorphic and degenerate sepals. The total frequency of visits of two bumblebee species showed no distinct fluctuations in the studied population among the 4 years. However, seed production of netted flowers after emasculation indicated wind pollination had occurred. The seed number of bagged flowers with one visit by bumblebees was significantly less than that of netted flowers after one visit, or in control flowers. Both seed number and fruit set of netted flowers were significantly lower than in control flowers. These results suggest that wind pollination provides supplementary pollen to unvisited and/or once‐visited flowers, but accounts for only a small amount of seed production compared to bumblebee pollination in natural conditions. Such a combination of insect and wind pollination might play an important role in maintaining sexual reproduction of this biennial herb, allowing it to persist in arid habitats on the Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau, especially during Quaternary glacial periods when pollinator populations oscillated extensively.  相似文献

Trade-offs between sexual and asexual reproduction in the genus Mimulus   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary Six estimates of resource allocation to sexual reproduction (nectar concentration, nectar volume, sugar production, pollinator visitation rates, fruit-set, and seed production) and a single estimate of resource allocation to asexual reproduction (the rate of rooted-branch production) were examined for five species of Mimulus. There were significant interspecific differences for all paramaters. With the exception of nectar concentration, there was 1) a consistent positive correlation among the parameters measuring allocation to sexual reproduction, and 2) a significant negative correlation between parameters measuring allocation to sexual reproduction and the rate of rooted-branch production (asexual reproduction). The results indicate that Mimulus species which produce the highest volumes of nectar 1) receive the most pollinator visits, 2) have the highest fruit-set, 3) produce the most seeds, and 4) produce the fewest rooted branches.  相似文献

The sexual and asexual reproductive features of the graminoid species Arundinella hirta growing at riversides of the Jialing River were analyzed. It was found that the total seed mass, seed number per plant, and sexual reproductive allocation of A. hirta decreased with decreasing bank elevation, and plants growing at the lowest elevations of banks subjected to intense flooding did not show sexual reproduction. The total plant biomass and the number of ramifications per plant increased with flooding intensity, which implies that, contrary to sexual reproduction, asexual reproduction of A. hirtawas enhanced by flooding. Summary We examined the effects of varying pollination distances on seed production and its components in three populations of the perennial lily Amianthium muscaetoxicum. We performed hand pollinations using pollen from near neighbors and from plants separated by 5, 15, and 60 meters. Pollination by near neighbors reduced fruit set and the numbers of seeds per fruit in comparison to other treatments in two of the three populations; variation in pollination distance beyond near-neighbor pollination produced no effect. In the third population, in which nearneighbor pollination did not affect seed production, nearneighbor pollination reduced seed weight by 11%, compared to other pollination distances. Seed weights from the 5-, 15-, and 60-m pollination treatments did not differ, and pollination distance did not affect seed weight in the other two populations. The effects of pollination-distance treatments explained a very small proportion of the variance in seed production and seed weight. Heterogeneity among individual plants, despite full hand pollination of every plant, accounted for much more variance (by one to two orders of magnitude) than variation in pollination distance.  相似文献
