声音通讯在凹耳蛙(Odorrana tormota)的繁殖过程中起到关键作用,雄性凹耳蛙个体处于不同性选择压力下会采取不同的发声策略,然而相关研究仍缺乏。本实验采用个体标记法,基于2021年3-5月的野外实验,对雄性凹耳蛙个体(n=12)处于合唱高潮期和低潮期鸣声中的非线性发声现象(nonlinear vocal phenomena,以下简称NLP)总含量及其各组分(混音、半谐波、频率跳跃)含量、鸣声时长以及鸣叫频次之间的差异进行Wilcoxon符号秩检验。结果显示,雄蛙处于合唱高潮期和低潮期鸣声中的部分NLP组分(混音、半谐波)含量以及鸣声时长均没有显著性差异,合唱低潮期的NLP总含量、部分NLP组分(频率跳跃频次)显著大于高潮期,合唱高潮期的发声率显著大于低潮期。实验结果表明,雄性凹耳蛙不同合唱期会采取不同的发声策略,即性选择压力较小的低潮期通过提高鸣声中的NLP含量、扩大声音传播距离、增大声音的不可预测性来更好吸引雌性;高潮期性选择压力大时,雄蛙通过提高鸣叫频次使得个体鸣声更加突出,从而提高抱对成功率。  相似文献

We investigated the phylogenetic relationships among 20 species of Oriental torrent frogs in the genus Amolops and its allies from China and Southeast Asia based on 1346-bp sequences of the mitochondrial 12S and 16S rRNA genes. Oriental species of the tribe Ranini form a monophyletic group containing 11 clades (Rana temporaria + Pseudoamolops, R. chalconota, four clades of Amolops, Meristogenys, three clades of Huia species, and Staurois) for which the phylogenetic relationships are unresolved. The genus Amolops consists of southern Chinese, southwestern Chinese, Thai, and Vietnamese-Malaysian lineages, but their relationships are also unresolved. The separation of southern and southwestern lineages within China conforms to previous morphological and karyological results. Species of Huia do not form a monophyletic group, whereas those of Meristogenys are monophyletic. Because P. sauteri is a sister species of R. temporaria, distinct generic status of Pseudoamolops is unwarranted.  相似文献

In addition to spectral call components, temporal patterns in the advertisement-call envelope of green treefrog males (Hyla cinerea) provide important cues for female mate choice. Rapid amplitude modulation (AM) with rates of 250–300 Hz is typical for this species advertisement calls. Here we report data on the encoding of these rapid call modulations by studying the responses of single auditory nerve fibers to two-tone stimuli with envelope periodicities close to those of the natural call. The free-field response properties of 86 nerve fibers were studied from 32 anesthetized males. The accuracy of stimulus envelope coding was quantified using both a Gaussian function fit to the interspike interval histograms derived from the first seven 20-ms stimulus segments, and the vector-strength metric applied to the phase-locked responses. Often, AM encoding in the initial stimulus segment was more faithful than that in its second half. This result may explain why conspecific females prefer calls in which the initial segment is unmasked rather than masked. Both the questions of pattern recognition and localization are discussed, and the data are related to behavioral observations of female choice and localization performance in this species.  相似文献

We present a quantitative mathematical model that represents the main features of the bullfrog inner ear. Calculated responses based on this model predict the observed frequency separation between the amphibian papilla and basilar papilla responses. The origin of this separation can be traced to the effect of the contact membranes on the impedance of the respective paths. Additionally, we calculated the input impedance of the periotic canal and showed that at low frequencies it acts as a bypass for most of the energy entering the ear, shunting it away from the amphibian-basilar papilla complex. As this shunting decreases with increasing frequency, we propose that the periotic canal functions as a protection mechanism to prevent overload of the amphibian papilla and basilar papilla during ventilation and for quasi-static pressure equalization. Our model explains the main features of the empirical data obtained from direct measurement of the amphibian papilla and basilar papilla contact membranes reported in an accompanying paper (this issue). 为了解同域分布的两种无尾两栖类动物武夷湍蛙(Amolops wuyiensis)和凹耳蛙(Odorrana tormotus)在高噪音环境下的求偶鸣声特征及其适应策略,该研究利用超声录音设备录制并分析了繁殖季节武夷湍蛙和凹耳蛙雄性个体在同一噪音环境下的求偶鸣声。结果显示,繁殖期武夷湍蛙在不同时段均能发出3~6个音节数不等的单一鸣声,每个音节由2~10个声脉冲组成,鸣声平均持续时间为2198.20ms,主频为2231.90Hz,信噪声强差为33.00dB,且鸣声不含超声组分,不具备超声通讯的基础。凹耳蛙在每天的18:00—21:00有集中鸣叫行为,鸣声平均持续时间为331.80ms,主频为6665.50Hz,信噪声强差为37.00dB,且鸣声谐波包含超声组分,与前人描述一致。经进一步分析发现,武夷湍蛙和凹耳蛙的鸣声主频和声强均高于背景噪音,噪音不会对其鸣声产生掩蔽作用。通过比较分析得知,武夷湍蛙鸣声主频率<凹耳蛙,推测其声信号传播距离相对后者更远,该蛙在噪音环境下有可能通过调整自身的发声策略(即采用多音节鸣叫声、增加鸣叫时长和鸣叫频次等)来完成种内通讯,并通过改变鸣声时长来体现雄性自身的品质,以便提高对雌性的吸引力。而相同噪音环境下的凹耳蛙则可能采用较为节约能量的方式提高声信号频率的通讯策略,完成种内竞争和交流。  相似文献

The Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkey,Rhinopithecus roxellanae, is an endangered Colobine endemic to China. The behavior and biology of this species are little known, and it has rarely been kept in captivity outside China. Results from 42 hr of observations of a male-female golden monkey pair provide preliminary information on the vocal behavior of this species in captivity. Vocalizations by the animals often occurred within antiphonal sequences, which were primarily initiated by the female. Sequences were brief (2–3 calls), showed little or no temporal overlap, and were emitted primarily when the animals were distal from one another, suggesting that sequences may function as contact calls in nature. Some vocalizations appeared to be cryptic, i.e. unaccompanied by mouth or body movement, and these were observed more often than noncryptic calls in both animals. Vocal communication appears to be complex in this species, and remains poorly understood.  相似文献

“Hot spring frog” is an informal name used for the Japanese stream tree frog (Buergeria japonica), which is widely distributed in Taiwan and the Ryukyu Archipelago in Japan. Some populations of the species are known to inhabit hot springs. However, water temperature can be extremely high around the sources of hot springs. Thus, it is questionable whether B. japonica selectively inhabits such dangerous environments. To address this question, we conducted a series of observations of water temperature preferences of a hot spring population of B. japonica in Kuchinoshima Island in Japan: (a) a field observation of tadpole density in water pools of different temperatures, (b) a field observation of water temperatures where adult males appear for breeding, and (c) an indoor observation of water temperatures selected by adult females for oviposition. As a result, tadpoles showed a higher density in cooler water. Adult males avoided water pools hotter than 37°C, and adult females selected cooler pools for oviposition. Camera records also showed that adult individuals tend to appear around cooler pools. Thus, we did not find any support for the hypothesis that hot spring frogs prefer hot water. Conversely, they apparently tended to prefer cooler water if it was available. Water temperatures around the sources of the hot spring exceed thermal tolerances of the species and could be a strong selective pressure on the population. Thus, the ability to sense and avoid lethal temperatures may be a key ecological and physiological characteristic for the species that inhabit hot springs.  相似文献

As one of large amphibian group, there are a total of 45 species of Amolops in the world. However, the antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) existing in this genus has not been extensively studied. In this study, cDNAs encoding five novel AMP precursors were cloned by screening the skin-derived cDNA library of Amolops ricketti, a frog species that exists in southern and western parts of China. Protein sequence analysis led to the identification of five deduced peptides, three belonging to the brevinin-1 family and two belonging to the brevinin-2 family of amphibian AMPs. Thus, they were named as brevinin-1RTa (FLPLLAGVVANFLPQIICKIARKC), brevinin-1RTb (FLGSLLGLVGKVVPTLFCKISKKC), brevinin-1RTc (FLGSLLGLVGKIVPTLICKISKKC), brevinin-2RTa (GLMSTLKDFGKTAAKEIAQSLLSTASCKLAKTC), and brevinin-2RTb (GILDTLKEFGKTAAKGIAQSLLSTASCKLAKTC), respectively. The purification of brevinin-1RTa, brevinin-1RTb, and brevinin-2RTb was carried out by RP-HPLC, and confirmed by the LC-MS/MS-based proteomics approach. All of the peptides displayed different antimicrobial potency against a variety of microorganisms. In addition, brevinin-2RTa and brevinin-2RTb were found to have relatively low hemolytic activity (>400μg/ml) against mammalian red blood cells in vitro, which could potentially be as candidates for developing novel anti-infection agents.  相似文献

This study investigated the development of maternal recognition of infant calls in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta). Fifteen mothers and their offspring, of age ranging from several hours to 28 days, served as subjects of an experiment in which the offspring's distress vocalizations were recorded and then played back to their mothers simultaneously with those of an age-matched control infant. The proportion of time looking at, but not the proportion of orientations to the speaker playing the offspring's vocalizations increased significantly as a function of infant age. Specifically, mothers of infants older than 1 week of age responded longer to the playback of their own infant's calls than did mothers of younger infants. These findings provide the firt evidence that offspring recognition in macaques develops between the first and second week of the infant's life and are consistent with the hypothesis that mothers need to be exposed to their infants' calls in order to learn their acoustic characteristics.  相似文献

为了解非线性鸣声对凹耳蛙(Odorrana tormota)应答音的影响以及非线性鸣声是否能够增强鸣声的不可预测性,本研究通过回放非线性鸣声和线性鸣声来刺激陌生雄性凹耳蛙,并记录应答次数及统计分析应答音相关参数。结果表明,回放非线性鸣声时会引起陌生蛙(n=22)更多次数的应答,但两种刺激引起的首次应答时间没有显著差异。对应答音相关参数分析表明,线性鸣声引起的应答音在总时长上比非线性鸣声引起的应答音更长且具有显著差异,而其他声音参数(包括平均基频、最大基频、最小基频、主频)均没有显著差异。推测当陌生雄蛙听到同类鸣叫时,出于保护领地和资源的本能反应,陌生蛙都会第一时间作出反应,因此在两类声音的应答反应时间上并没有区别。而在应答次数上,非线性鸣声引起了凹耳蛙更多次数的应答,可能是由于鸣声中的非线性现象使得声音更加复杂,包含更多信息,容易提高声音接收者对这类声音的关注度。本研究结果表明,凹耳蛙鸣声中包含的非线性现象能够增强其声音的不可预测性,引起陌生蛙产生更多的应答次数。  相似文献

Female phonotaxis in túngara (Physalaemus pustulosus)and cricket (Acris crepitans) frogs is biased toward male advertisementcalls or call components of lower frequency. This behavioralbias might result in part from a mismatch between the spectralcharacteristics of the advertisement call and the most sensitive frequencyof the peripheral end organ implicated in reception of thesesounds. In both species, females are tuned to frequencies lowerthan average for the calls in their population. This mismatch,however, represents the situation during short-distance communication.Female frogs can also use the call to detect choruses at longdistances, and the spectral distribution of call energy canvary with transmission distance. We used computer simulationsto test the hypothesis that there is a better match betweentuning and call spectral energy at long distances from the callingmale than at short distances by comparing the performance (soundenergy received) of the natural tuning curve relative to anoptimal tuning curve (i.e., one centered at the call's dominantfrequency). The relative performance of the natural tuning curveincreased with distance in túngara frogs. For the twosubspecies of cricket frogs, however, the relative performancedecreased at longer distances. The performance did not equalthe optimal tuning curve at the distances tested. The resultsindicate that the relationship between calls and auditory tuningcannot be optimal for both long and short distance reception.The relationship between female tuning and call dominant frequencymay represent a compromise between short and long distance communication,and the bias toward short or long distances may vary among species.  相似文献

Although much evidence reveals sexually dimorphic processing of chemosensory cues by the brain, potential sex differences at more peripheral levels of chemoreception are understudied. In plethodontid salamanders, the volume of the vomeronasal organ (VNO) is almost twice as large in males as compared to females, both in absolute and relative size. To determine whether the structural sexual dimorphism in VNO volume is associated with sex differences in other peripheral aspects of chemosensation, we measured sex differences in chemo-investigation and in responsiveness of the VNO to chemosensory cues. Males and females differed in traits influencing stimulus access to VNO chemosensory neurons. Males chemo-investigated (“nose tapped”) neutral substrates and substrates moistened with female body rinses more than did females. Compared to females, males had larger narial structures (cirri) associated with the transfer of substrate-borne chemical cues to the lumen of the VNO. These sex differences in chemo-investigation and narial morphology likely represent important mechanisms for regulating sex differences in chemical communication. In contrast, males and females did not differ in responsiveness of VNO chemosensory neurons to male mental gland extract or female skin secretions. This important result indicates that although males have a substantially larger VNO compared to females, the male VNO was not more responsive to every chemosensory cue that is detected by the VNO. Future studies will determine whether the male VNO is specialized to detect a subset of chemosensory cues, such as female body rinses or female scent marks.  相似文献

Hypoxia elicits a number of compensatory responses in animals, including behavioral hypothermia. The hypothesis that hypoglycemia induces hypothermia in the bullfrog Rana catesbeiana was tested and that this behavioral response would be beneficial. Frogs equipped with a temperature probe were tested in a thermal gradient (10–40°C). Insulin (15 IU kg−1) caused significant reduction of body temperature, from 25.0 to 17.8°C. A non-metabolizable glucose analogue, 2-deoxy-d-glucose (2-DG, 50 mg kg−1),which blocks intracellular glucose utilization, was also injected and caused a similar drop in body temperature, despite an increase in plasma glucose levels. To assess the possible benefits of hypoglycemia-induced hypothermia, the effects of insulin and 2-DG injections were measured on plasma glucose concentration and on oxygen consumption of frogs equilibrated at 10, 20 and 30°C. The plasma glucose was elevated at higher temperatures and so was oxygen consumption. The insulin caused a significant reduction of plasma glucose concentration (about 1.22 μMol ml−1) whereas 2-DG caused a significant increase (about 0.70 μMol ml−1) at 30°C. Both drugs caused a reduction of oxygen consumption (approximately 0.388 and 0.382 ml min−1 kg at 30°C after insulin and 2-DG injection, respectively). No effect of either insulin or 2-DG was observed when the animals were equilibrated at 10°C. In conclusion, hypothermia may be a beneficial response to hypoglycemia in frogs.  相似文献

Abstract Interactions between species can affect the evolution of their sexual signals, receiver selectivity, or both. One commonly expected outcome is reproductive character displacement, whereby adverse consequences of mismating select for greater differentiation of communication systems in areas of sympatry than in areas of allopatry. We found evidence of reproductive character displacement in the acoustic communication system of green tree frogs ( Hyla cinerea ). The strength of female preferences for the spectral properties of calls that distinguish conspecific calls from those of a closely related congener, H. gratiosa , was greater in areas of sympatry with H. gratiosa than in areas of allopatry. We also found subtle differences in advertisement calls and in the heights of male calling perches when we restricted our comparisons to localities in which H. gratiosa was also breeding (syntopy) with localities where this species was absent. Hyla cinerea and H. gratiosa show only weak genetic incompatibility, but the calls representative of interspecific hybrids were unattractive to females of both parental species. Hybrids might also be at an ecological disadvantage because of different habitat preferences of the two taxa. Thus, selection against production of less fit or less attractive hybrid or backcross offspring are probably the main causes responsible for the differences documented in this paper.  相似文献

The black-capped chickadee is a songbird that has been used extensively as a model of animal communication in field and laboratory settings. Although many studies have focused on the complex call and song systems of the black-capped chickadee, relatively fewer studies have focused on chickadee audition. However, we do know from behavioral and molecular work that chickadees (and auditory processing areas in their brains) discriminate between artificially generated tones, between conspecific and heterospecific vocalizations, and among different types of conspecific vocalizations. In this paper we investigate peripheral auditory processing of frequency in the black-capped chickadee and the potential influence of sex on frequency sensitivity using a technique called auditory evoked potentials. We found that male and female black-capped chickadees did not differ in any measure of frequency sensitivity. Both sexes had the greatest sensitivity to frequencies between 2 and 4 kHz. This range of frequencies is well represented in black-capped chickadee song, partially supporting the idea that sender and receiver coevolve. Finally, we suggest that the call and song system of North American parids make them an ideal taxonomic group for comparative work exploring the relationship between call systems and the evolution of auditory processing.  相似文献

A comparative bioacustic analysis of vocalizations of the prosimian subfamily Galaginae revealed that morphologically similar sibling taxa within the main groups of the lesser galagos and the greater galagos can be reliably identified phenotypically on the basis of the acoustic structure of their loud call or advertisement call. Results confirm the separation of two distinct species of greater galagos, Galago crassicaudatus and Galago garnettii, and strongly suggest the discrimination of three distinct species from the senegalensis lesser bushbaby group, Galago senegalensis, Galago moholi and Galao zanzibaricus. An investigation of the ontogenetic development of the loud call indicated that it is derived from the infant's isolation call, displaying in all studied bushbaby taxa a fairly similar acoustic pattern. Shared acoustic characters of the loud call among the different taxa as well as the infant's isolation call were used to propose a hypothesis about the phylogenetic affinities in bushbabies. The results seem to be supported by recent fossil records.  相似文献

We examined the sounds made by displaying male capercaillies on a lek in the Black Forest for infrasonic components. Vocalizations did not contain infrasound, whereas flutter jumps produced substantial low-frequency sound energy, with regularly spaced frequency peaks and maximum energy below 20 Hz. This pattern was found in recordings from different distances and for all tested individuals. Nonvocal infrasound may be significant in territorial behavior or orientation of capercaillie.  相似文献

We studied the phylogeography of the Sahara frog in North Africa. We widely sampled frogs from Morocco to Tunisia (195 individuals) and sequenced two mitochondrial (16S and CO1) and one nuclear (Rag1) genes. Our results confirm that Moroccan populations of Pelophylax saharicus are genetically distinct from Algerian ones. Specimens from Alger and Djelfa (central Algeria) are genetically closer to Moroccan specimens than to east Algerian ones, and the split between these two lineages may have occurred approximately 2.6 Mya. A similar pattern of differentiation was observed in several other species and was hypothesized to be linked to the formation of the fossil island called the ‘Edough Peninsula’ in eastern Algeria around 4.2 Ma and then to have been reinforced by Pleistocene climatic changes. At the Moroccan scale, we found a low level of genetic diversity and no clear phylogeographic pattern within P. saharicus. However, our SAShA analyses revealed a mixture of random and underdistributed haplotypes, which may indicate a complex population genetic or biogeographic history.  相似文献
