Intra- and inter-population variability was studied in three species of tropical African estrildid finches comprising the genus Pyrenestes. Eleven characters were measured on P. ostrinus captured on a study area in Cameroon. Most of these same characters were also measured on museum specimens of this species and P. saguineus and P. minor. Data were analysed using univariate and multivariate statistical methods in order to characterize variation within and between populations and species.
Variation in all three species of Pyrenestes is greatest in bill size, resulting from an exceptional non-sex-linked polymorphism. Bill size differences between morphs are as high as between congeneric species, with extremely large coefficients of variation, while other body characters show comparatively little variation. Sexual dimorphisms and differences in size due to age occur, but contribute little to overall size variation. Distributions of bill characters in each age and sex class are bimodal or greatly skewed, and in some geographical regions tend to be trimodal. Distributions of other body characters tend not to be significantly different from normal. Bill morphs differ in both shape and size and may be separated using principal component analysis. Static allometries of bill morphs differ significantly: relative to body size, bill size increases more rapidly in the large morph. Bill size and shape also vary geographically. The three species differ in mean size but show much overlap. Bill size is negatively correlated with total annual rainfall. In regions characterized by ecotonal transition zones between forest and savanna, tentative evidence suggests that a third, yet larger bill mode occurs. This third mode apparently results from the presence of a distinct larger species of hard-seeded sedge found only in these regions. The taxonomic implications of the polymorphism are discussed.  相似文献

Examination of spatial and temporal factors that influence nest survival can provide insight into habitat selection, reproductive decisions (e.g., clutch size), population dynamics, and conservation requirements for species. We used nest survival data for the Dusky Flycatcher Empidonax oberholseri to examine several factors that may influence nesting success. Our prediction was that the number of nest initiations would be positively associated with period nest survival. We used a model selection framework and found that nesting success was a function of clutch size and a cubic effect of age. Clutches with one, two, three, and four eggs had period survival rates of 0, 0.05, 0.33, and 0.49, respectively. Daily survival rates decreased from the onset of egg-laying and increased during the later stages of incubation before remaining relatively constant through the later portions of the nestling stage. Model-selection criterion provided support for a date effect on daily survival (i.e., daily nest survival declined across the nesting season) although the 95% confidence interval for the estimate included zero. We found that the majority of nest initiations occurred early in the nest season and declined across the season as period nest survival declined. Our prediction concerning nest survival was partially supported. In addition, we found substantial positive associations between clutch size and nest survival. While low daily survival rates for clutches with one or two eggs suggested that individuals may have reduced reproductive effort in response to nest predation risk, we did not find strong evidence that individuals reduced their clutch sizes in subsequent nest attempts. Alternative predictions, including the preferential settlement of higher quality individuals (e.g., those with the ability to lay full clutches to replace depredated nests) into high-quality habitat and differences in behavior patterns (e.g., number of visits to provision nestlings), may provide more consistent explanations for these patterns.  相似文献

For immature animals, diet quality and composition influence expression of life history traits such as growth rates and ultimately life stage duration and age to maturity. Circumglobally distributed loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) exhibit a multi-decade immature stage that generally occupies neritic habitats and is characterized by slow growth and an omnivorous diet. Although adult nesting populations are geographically distinct, foraging areas for immature loggerheads show a high degree of mixing of individuals that originate from multiple nesting stocks. Furthermore, despite their generalist foraging ecology, immature loggerheads have been observed to supplement their natural diets with fish from fishery discards and/or caught in fishing gear. However, whether trophic opportunism results in variation in loggerhead growth rates within or among feeding areas has not been investigated. In Core Sound, North Carolina (NC), USA, immature loggerheads demonstrate highly variable size-specific growth rates, in contrast to other studies that report discernible somatic growth functions in immature marine turtles. To determine whether inter-individual variation in growth rates at this site was due to variation in diet composition, and specifically variation in consumption of fish, we analyzed carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios of loggerhead blood plasma and of tissue samples of putative loggerhead prey, as well as commercially important fish species. Our results indicated that growth rates were not related to trophic levels at which individual turtles fed, but rather probably reflected inter-individual variation in overwintering or foraging behavior (i.e. nearshore vs. offshore). Furthermore, loggerhead diets were highly diverse, and comprised mainly blue crabs and/or whelks, as well as small proportions of cannonball jellies. Fish were unimportant dietary components for loggerheads. Although loggerheads in NC do not appear to feed on fish catch or discards, immature turtles showed dietary preferences for prey items that are also valuable to or are commonly taken as bycatch in commercial fisheries (e.g. blue crabs and whelks, respectively) in the region. Thus, the status of these prey items/fishery stocks as well as trends in loggerhead populations should be monitored to mitigate potential competitive interactions between fisheries activities and loggerhead turtles.  相似文献

Mast seeding, or masting, is the variable production of flowers, seeds, or fruit across years more or less synchronously by individuals within a population. A critical issue is the extent to which temporal variation in seed production over a collection of individuals can be viewed as arising from a combination of individual variation and synchrony among individuals. Studies of masting typically quantify such variation in terms of the coefficient of variation (CV). In this paper we examine mathematically how the population CV relates to the mean individual CV and synchrony, concluding that the relationship is a complex one which cannot isolate an overall measure of synchrony, and involves additional factors, principally the number of plants sampled and the mean productivity per plant. Our development suggests some simple approximate relationships of population CV to individual variability, synchrony and the number of individuals. These were found to fit quite well when applied to data from 59 studies which included seed production at the individual level.  相似文献

Although the ecological and evolutionary impacts of species interactions have been the foci of much research, the relationship between the strength of species interactions and the intensity of selection has been investigated only rarely. I develop a simple model demonstrating how the opportunity for selection varies with interaction strength, and then use the relationship between the maximum value of the selection differential and the opportunity for selection (Arnold & Wade 1984) to evaluate how selection differentials vary in relation to species interaction strength. This model predicts an initial deceleration and then an accelerating increase in the intensity of selection with increasing strength of antagonistic interactions and with decreasing strength of mutualistic interactions. Empirical data from several studies provide support for this model. These results further support an evolutionary mechanism for some striking patterns of evolutionary diversification including the latitudinal species gradient, and should be relevant to studies of eco‐evolutionary dynamics.  相似文献

Northern pike (Esox lucius) are often considered to be specialist piscivores, but under some circumstances will continue to eat invertebrates as adults. To examine effects of fish assemblage composition on the trophic ecology of pike, we combined stable isotope analysis (SIA) of carbon and nitrogen and stomach content analysis (SCA) on pike from five lakes in northern Alberta, three of which contain only pike (“pike-only”) and two that also contain yellow perch (Perca flavescens) or white sucker (Catostomus commersoni) (“pike-other”). Fish were more important as prey and empty stomachs, which often characterize piscivores, were significantly more frequent in pike-other than in pike-only lakes. However, even though invertebrates were more important for pike in pike-only lakes, SIA and SCA indicated that invertebrates were also an important component of pike diets in pike-other lakes. SIA and SCA also revealed considerable intrapopulation variation in trophic ecology, with individuals in some populations differing by as much as two trophic levels. Comparisons of stomach contents and isotope signatures of the same fish suggested that within these variable populations, specialization on invertebrates or fish was a long-term trait of some individuals. SIA indicated that trophic position increased and diets shifted to a greater importance of littoral prey as pike grew in pike-only lakes, but not in lakes with other fish present. Trophic adaptability in northern pike is expressed at both the population level, where the trophic ecology is sensitive to differences in prey regimes, and at the organismal level, in the form of intrapopulation variation and individual specialization. Invertebrate algal grazer densities were manipulated in a temperate river to discover the impact of differences in riffle-scale architectural complexity on the strength of the trophic interaction between grazers and epilithic algae. Animal densities were manipulated by manual removal in architecturally complex boulder-cobble riffles and simpler bedrock riffles, with the complexity of smaller-scale architecture held constant. Responses in algal density were recorded before and after a month of manipulations, together with grazer colonization rate and body sizes. The experiment was carried out in winter and again in summer. The interaction between grazers and algae differed between habitats and seasons. In winter, when algae were growing, the more complex rifflescale architecture in the boulder-cobble riffles created a refuge from grazing for algae. This was probably the result of the movement abilities of the grazers interacting with habitat architecture, and potentially also due to the control of predatory fish densities by habitat architecture resulting in greater predation pressure on grazers in boulder-cobble riffles. Therefore the impact of highly complex riffle-scale architecture was to weaken the strength of the trophic interaction between algae and their grazers by reducing grazer densities, while potentially strengthening the trophic interaction between grazers and their fish predators.  相似文献

That fitness varies as a function of using different hosts is a basic premise of theory addressing the ecology and evolution of oviposition behavior and host selection. Few data exist demonstrating: (1) the effects of different hosts on fitness in the field, and (2) how these effects vary spatially or temporally. Cohorts of caterpillars were followed from hatching to adulthood to test the hypotheses that: (1) hosts have significant effects on herbivore performance in nature, and (2) host "quality" for performance varies predictably (i.e., the rank order is consistent) across herbivore generations. In total, the fates of >2,000 caterpillars were followed on 238 individual host trees. Host species had significant effects on most, but not all, measured components of caterpillar performance in the field. Variation among generations was mainly quantitative rather than qualitative, with few changes in the rank order of hosts in their effects on performance. There was also a strong seasonal effect on performance such that caterpillar growth and survival were higher in the early wet season compared to the late wet season. Using estimates derived from these data, correlations among larval growth rate, larval survival, total development time, and final adult size were examined at the level of host plant species. Across generations, larval survival was consistently poor, development time was long, but final adult size attained was large on the host Spondias mombin. The converse was true for the host Exostema mexicanum. Relative performance on the host Casearia nitida was variable between the other two hosts. Overall, the data suggest that host use involves a predictable tradeoff between larval survival and final adult size, but argue that which is the "better" host from the female perspective will depend on the fitness consequences of producing a few, relatively large offspring versus producing more, relatively small offspring.  相似文献

We investigated how temporal variation in rainfall influences the impact of lizards on spiders inhabiting small islands in Abaco, Bahamas. Annual censuses of web spiders were conducted on nine lizard islands and on eight no-lizard islands 1994–2003. Repeated-measures ANOVA showed that annual variation in spider density (time) and in the lizard effect on spider density (lizard × time) were both significant. Correlation coefficients between the lizard effect (ln ratio of no-lizard to lizard spider densities) and number of rainfall days were generally negative, and strengthened with length of the time period during which rainfall was measured prior to annual spider censuses. Spider density was also negatively correlated with rainfall days and strengthened with length of the prior time period. Longer time intervals included the hurricane season, suggesting that the strong negative correlations were linked to high rainfall years during which tropical storms impacted the region and reduced spider and lizard densities. Split-plot ANOVA showed that rainfall during the hurricane season had a significant effect on the lizard effect and on spider density. Results in this study are opposite to those found in our previous 10-year study (1981–1990) conducted in the Exuma Cays, a moderately xeric region of the Bahamas, where the relation between rainfall and the lizard effect on spider density was positive. Combined data from the Exuma and Abaco studies produce a unimodal relation between trophic interaction strength and rainfall; we suggest that the negative effect of storms associated with rainfall was paramount in the present study, whereas the positive bottom-up effect of rainfall prevailed in our previous study. We conclude that climatic variability has a major impact on the trophic interaction and suggest that a substantial change in precipitation in either direction may weaken the interaction significantly.  相似文献

Trophic cascades – the indirect effect of predators on non‐adjacent lower trophic levels – are important drivers of the structure and dynamics of ecological communities. However, the influence of intraspecific trait variation on the strength of trophic cascade remains largely unexplored, which limits our understanding of the mechanisms underlying ecological networks. Here we experimentally investigated how intraspecific difference among herbivore lineages specialized on different host plants influences trophic cascade strength in a terrestrial tri‐trophic system. We found that the occurrence and strength of the trophic cascade are strongly influenced by herbivores’ lineage and host‐plant specialization but are not associated with density‐dependent effects mediated by the growth rate of herbivore populations. Our findings stress the importance of intraspecific heterogeneities and evolutionary specialization as drivers of trophic cascade strength and underline that intraspecific variation should not be overlooked to decipher the joint influence of evolutionary and ecological factors on the functioning of multi‐trophic interactions.  相似文献

The overall dependence of benthic secondary production on the main primary producers at three different habitats in the Nakdong River estuarine system, Korea, was estimated. Inventories of macrobenthic invertebrate biomass were combined with multiple-isotope-mixing models to evaluate the trophic base, comparing Scirpus triqueter-dominated and Phragmites australis-dominated marshes and bare intertidal flat. The feasible contributions of four main food sources, marsh macrophytes, the microphytobenthos, and riverine and marine suspended particulate organic matter (RPOM and MPOM), to the consumer biomasses were calculated using the isotopic mixing model. After weighting the feasible contributions of food sources to each taxon by the consumer biomass, the resultant values were summed for all the consumers at each habitat to quantify the trophic base of the benthic invertebrate community. Dual-isotope-mixing model calculations verified the varying dependence on those potential food sources among the functional feeding groups. In addition, the dependence on each source of the same functional group varied between bare intertidal and salt-marsh habitats, shifting from a dominance of benthic and pelagic microalgal sources on the former habitat to a mixed food source at the latter habitat. The biomasses of the species comprising each functional group differed among habitats and sampling dates, so that each functional group made a different contribution to the whole benthic community and its basal food source. Given the calculation of the overall dependence of macrozoobenthic community on each food source, our results indicate that the microphytobenthic source dominates (nearly half) the trophic base in all the intertidal habitats of different vegetational compositions. Marsh-macrophyte-derived organic matter and RPOM served as considerable subsidies only to salt-marsh food webs, reflecting the use of the mixed food source by salt-marsh-bed consumers. Conversely, the dominance of MPOM in the total food base was equal to that of the microphytobenthos in the bare intertidal ecosystem but increased during spring−summer in the salt-marsh systems. Our results also suggest that the river discharge concentrated during the summer monsoon does not lead to any shift in trophic base for estuarine secondary production.  相似文献

The composition, structure and temporal variation of ectomycorrhizal (EM) communities associated with mountain avens (Dryas octopetala) in grass heaths of the Burren, western Ireland were assessed by using soil core sampling in two permanent plots and 30 other sites (196 cores in total). Of the 34 different EM types observed, 11 were common and constituted over 80% of the EM biomass. Four EM types, Craterellus lutescens, Tomentella sp., Dryadirhiza fulgens and Cenococcum geophilum were the most abundant as measured by EM length and frequency of occurrence in cores. The species profile and relative abundances were very similar in cores from the permanent plots and different sites in the Burren, indicating that they were all representative of the same EM community. The below-ground EM community in both plots was compared with production of basidiomes, and the latter was found to be an unreliable indicator of EM community structure. Temporal variation in the EM community was assessed by repeated core sampling of the two permanent plots over a 14-month period (between March 1998 and May 1999). No statistically significant shifts in EM abundance were found between sampling dates, probably as a consequence of the large variation in EM abundance between core samples over the sampling period. No significant relationship was found between rainfall, soil moisture or soil temperature and fluctuations in EM abundance. Patterns of total EM abundance and fluctuations in EM diversity were strongly correlated between the two permanent plots over the sampling period. Temporal fluctuations in the dominant EM type, Craterellus lutescens, were similar in both plots with respect to mycorrhizal length, biomass and relative abundance, and the patterns between both plots were positively correlated. EM diversity was negatively correlated with biomass of ectomycorrhizas of Craterellus lutescens in both plots, but it was significant only in plot 1.  相似文献

We investigated how size structure affects development of alternative larval phenotypes in Arizona tiger salamanders, Ambystoma tigrinum nebulosum, by testing the hypothesis that population size structure per se is a significant component of an individual's environment. Larvae of this subspecies exhibit one of two feeding phenotypes; typical larvae eat zooplankton and macroinvertebrates and cannibalistic larvae feed primarily on conspecifics. Previous laboratory experiments showed that larval density positively affected expression of the cannibalistic phenotype. In this study we tested the hypothesis that size variation among larvae also serves as a cue triggering development of the cannibalistic phenotype. We report laboratory experiments and field observations showing that both an individual larva's position in a size distribution and the amount of size vaiation among larvae serve as cues stimulating development of cannibalistic larvae. Larval density and population size structure provide a larva with an indication of the abundance and vulnerability of potential conspecific prey. Size variation among larvae, in turn, appears to be influenced by larval density. Thus, a complex relationship exists between larval density, population size structure, and the frequency of cannibals within a habitat.  相似文献

The lice, Haffneria grandis and Saemundssonia were extracted from their hosts, skuas (Aves: Stercorariidae). Lice were extracted from dead birds by combing feathers, while lice from live birds were extracted using a delousing chamber containing chloroform vapour. Lice were measured and the data analysed by canonical discriminant analysis. Lice show variation in morphology that is useful in identifying some of these hosts. This variation is presumably due to micro-environmental pressure provided by each host. Our interpretation is that these chewing lice have evolved to be adapted to each skua taxon; different sizes and morphologies of skua taxa result in different sizes and morphologies of Haffneria grandis and Saemundssonia.  相似文献

Three indicators quantifying interactions between species are developed for an upwelling system to provide useful measures for the comparison of marine ecosystem structure and function. Small pelagic fish are dominant in upwelling systems, and by definition, they are pivotal in a wasp-waist upwelling system. The indicator of interaction strength (IS) quantifies the effect that a change in biomass of one group has on abundance of other groups. The functional impact (FI) indicator quantifies the trophic impacts of species on their own and other functional groups or feeding guilds. The trophic replacement (TR) indicator quantifies the trophic similarity between a species that is removed from an ecosystem and other species in that ecosystem, i.e. it quantifies the ability of one group to trophically replace another. A trophic model of the southern Benguela ecosystem is used as an example for the application of the indicators. The strong similarities in trophic functioning of the southern Benguela ecosystem in the anchovy-dominated system of the 1980s, and the 1990s when there was a shift towards greater sardine abundance, are explained by the mutual trophic replacement abilities of anchovy and sardine. Differences between the proposed indicators and mixed trophic impact assessment are highlighted, mainly resulting from the static versus dynamic nature of the models upon which they are based. Trophic indicators such as those presented here, together with other kinds of ecosystem indicators, may assist in defining operational frameworks for ecosystem-based fisheries management.  相似文献

In plant populations a positive correlation between population size, genetic variation and fitness components is often found, due to increased pollen limitation or reduced genetic variation and inbreeding depression in smaller populations. However, components of fitness also depend on environmental factors which can vary strongly between years. The dry grassland species Muscari tenuiflorum experiences long term habitat isolation and small population sizes. We analyzed seed production of M. tenuiflorum in four years and its dependence on population size and genetic variation. Genetic diversity within populations was high (AFLP: He = 0.245; allozymes: He = 0.348). An analysis of molecular variance revealed considerable population differentiation (AFLP: 26%; allozyme: 17%). An overall pattern of isolation by distance was found, which, however was not present at distances below 20 km, indicating stronger effects of genetic drift. Genetic diversity was positively correlated to population size. Self pollination reduced seed set by 24%, indicating inbreeding depression. Reproductive fitness was not correlated to genetic diversity and a positive correlation with population size was present in two of four study years. The absence of a general pattern stresses the importance for multi-year studies. Overall, the results show that despite long term habitat isolation M. tenuiflorum maintains seed production in many years independent of population size. The long term persistence of populations is thus expected to depend less on intrinsic genetic or demographic properties affecting seed production but on successful plant establishment and persistence, which latter are based on conservation and protection of suitable habitats.  相似文献

In an age of rapid global change, it is imperative that we continue to improve our understanding of factors that govern genetic differentiation in plants to inform biologically reasonable predictions for the future and enlighten conservation and restoration practices. In this special issue, we have assembled a set of original research and reviews that employ diverse approaches, both classic and contemporary, to illuminate patterns of phenotypic and genetic variation, probe the underlying evolutionary processes that have contributed to these patterns, build predictive models, and test evolutionary hypotheses. Our goal was to underscore the unique insights that can be obtained through the complementary and distinct studies of plant populations across species' geographic ranges.  相似文献

The shallow lakes of Eastern England have been subject to intense anthropogenic pressures including nutrient enrichment and fish stocking. We sought to determine the relationships between fish community structure and other ecosystem characteristics in 28 of these lakes through classification of fish species into piscivorous, zooplanktivorous and benthivorous feeding guilds according to the literature. Canonical correspondence analysis produced clear associations between fish and ecosystem characteristics that generally agreed with other theoretical (e.g. the alternative stable states hypothesis) and empirical studies, but with some important differences. There was a striking lack of relationships between nutrients and other variables, indicating the importance of top-down rather than bottom-up processes as a structuring force in the generally eutrophic study lakes. The presence of submerged (and shoreline) vegetation was associated with a diverse assemblage of apparently co-existing piscivorous (principally pike Esox lucius) and zooplanktivorous species. Perch Perca fluviatilis, a significant predator in other studies, was unimportant and argued to be limited by water quality in the extremely shallow lakes. In contrast, the benthivorous fish guild (principally carp Cyprinus carpio, bream Abramis brama and tench Tinca tinca) essentially represented the inverse of the potential pelagic associations between piscivores/zooplanktivores and vegetation. The introduction of large benthivores to many study lakes could have precipitated a loss of submerged vegetation through direct uprooting during foraging, with the effect of simplifying the fish community being most acute where littoral vegetation was limited by other anthropogenic factors. It is implied that attempts to promote or restore submerged vegetation in these lakes would best target benthivorous species.  相似文献

Nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (n-damo), mainly carried out by n-damo bacteria, is an important pathway for mitigating methane emission from freshwater lakes. Although n-damo bacteria have been detected in a variety of freshwater lakes, their potential and distribution, and associated environmental factors, remain unclear. Therefore, the current study investigated the potential and distribution of anaerobic methanotrophs in sediments from Erhai Lake and Dianchi Lake, two adjacent freshwater lakes in the Yunnan Plateau with different trophic status. Both lakes showed active anaerobic methane oxidation potential and harbored a high density of n-damo bacteria. Based on the n-damo pmoA gene, sediment n-damo bacterial communities mainly consisted of Candidatus Methylomirabils oxyfera and Candidatus Methylomirabils sinica, as well as novel n-damo organisms. Sediment anaerobic methane oxidation potential and the n-damo bacterial community showed notable differences among seasons and between lakes. The environmental variables associated with lake trophic status (e.g. total nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, and total organic carbon) might have significant impacts on the anaerobic methane oxidation potential, as well as the abundance and community structure of n-damo bacteria. Therefore, trophic status could determine the n-damo process in freshwater lake sediment.  相似文献
