It seems that at conception something is formed which, due to its genetic make-up, has the potentiality to develop into a full-blown human being. Many believe that in virtue of this potentiality, this organism, the human zygote or early embryo, has in instrinsic value which makes it wrong to use or produce it merely as a means to some end, e.g., some scientific end such as to produce embryonic stem cells. Against this it is here argued, first, that it does not follow from the fact that something has a potential to become a (fully developed) human being that it already is a human being (in a rudimentary sense). In fact, a human being begins to exist no earlier than a couple of weeks after conception, at the stage known as gastrulation. Thus, even granted the questionable assumption that something has instrinsic value in virtue of being a human being, the zygote will not have intrinsic value. Secondly, the value an embryo has in virtue of its potentiality to become a full-blown human being can only be instrumental, a value as a means. But of course it cannot be wrong to treat that which has merely instrumental value as a mere means or instrument to some end.  相似文献

The draft of the human genome sequence is still incomplete. The outstanding tasks include filling in some gaps, finalizing the assembly of short sequences, improving sequence accuracy and correctly identifying coding regions. However, a closely related problem that receives little attention is the substantial number of incorrect annotations that have penetrated some of the widely used databases. This article illustrates this problem using the example of ubiquitin genes, and draws some conclusions that apply to false annotations in other short open reading frames (ORFs). Although the focus is on the human genome, other genomes are equally prone to similar propagation of false annotations.  相似文献

Language is a uniquely human trait, and questions of how and why it evolved have been intriguing scientists for years. Nonhuman primates (primates) are our closest living relatives, and their behavior can be used to estimate the capacities of our extinct ancestors. As humans and many primate species rely on vocalizations as their primary mode of communication, the vocal behavior of primates has been an obvious target for studies investigating the evolutionary roots of human speech and language. By studying the similarities and differences between human and primate vocalizations, comparative research has the potential to clarify the evolutionary processes that shaped human speech and language. This review examines some of the seminal and recent studies that contribute to our knowledge regarding the link between primate calls and human language and speech. We focus on three main aspects of primate vocal behavior: functional reference, call combinations, and vocal learning. Studies in these areas indicate that despite important differences, primate vocal communication exhibits some key features characterizing human language. They also indicate, however, that some critical aspects of speech, such as vocal plasticity, are not shared with our primate cousins. We conclude that comparative research on primate vocal behavior is a very promising tool for deepening our understanding of the evolution of human speech and language, but much is still to be done as many aspects of monkey and ape vocalizations remain largely unexplored.  相似文献

This paper begins with a brief discussion of the biohistorical approach to the study of human situations. It then considers some important principles relating to the health and behaviour of the human organism, as a biological being, in biologically novel habitats (eg cities) created by human culture. In particular, it examines the notion, in biohistorical perspective, that human culture is at present dangerously out of control; and it concludes with some discussion on prerequisites for a successful cultural adaptive response to the threats to humanity and to the biosphere inherent in the current situation.  相似文献

Our research concerns the immunohistochemical localization of EGF and IGF-I receptors in the tooth germ, using monoclonal antibodies. The results show that in the early phases of human tooth development EGF and IGF-I receptors are present. At bud stage both receptors are localized at dental laminae level, in some epithelial cells of the tooth bud and in some mesenchymal cells. At cap stage the receptors are present in the outer and inner enamel epithelium, and in some cells of stellate reticulum. As far as concerns the mesenchymal cells, some cells of dental papilla in contact with enamel organ, are intensely positive. The immunopositivity is present also in some mesenchymal cells at follicular level. At late cap stage and at early bell stage receptors are not present at inner enamel epithelium level but they can be detectable in the mesenchyma of dental papilla and in some cells of the follicle. On the basis of these results it may be hypothesized that EGF and IGF-I can act as growth factors in the modulation of cellular proliferation and differentiation during the human tooth morphogenesis. Moreover, it is possible that these substances can play a role in the mesenchymal-epithelial interaction in the developing human tooth.  相似文献

Multifunctionality or multitasking is the capability of some proteins to execute two or more biochemical functions. The objective of this work is to explore the relationship between multifunctional proteins, human diseases and drug targeting. The analysis of the proportion of multitasking proteins from the MultitaskProtDB-II database shows that 78% of the proteins analyzed are involved in human diseases. This percentage is much higher than the 17.9% found in human proteins in general. A similar analysis using drug target databases shows that 48% of these analyzed human multitasking proteins are targets of current drugs, while only 9.8% of the human proteins present in UniProt are specified as drug targets. In almost 50% of these proteins, both the canonical and moonlighting functions are related to the molecular basis of the disease. A procedure to identify multifunctional proteins from disease databases and a method to structurally map the canonical and moonlighting functions of the protein have also been proposed here. Both of the previous percentages suggest that multitasking is not a rare phenomenon in proteins causing human diseases, and that their detailed study might explain some collateral drug effects.  相似文献

目的该实验通过对16-28周人胚胎呼吸系统NDRG2表达的研究,旨在阐明NDRG2在16-28周人胚胎呼吸系统中的表达规律,为进一步明确新的发育相关基因ndrg2的功能提供依据。方法搜集16-28周胎儿呼吸系统的肺和气管组织,制成石蜡切片,用抗NDRG2单克隆抗体,行免疫组化染色(ABC法),从蛋白质水平观察NDRG2表达情况。统计阳性细胞数,利用统计学方法,判断不同胎龄的肺和气管间NDRG2表达有无差别。结果免疫组化染色表明,NDRG2在16-28周胚胎呼吸系统中有广泛的表达,阳性产物主要位于上皮细胞的胞浆中,但是不同胎龄之间NDRG2的表达未见显著差别。结论NDRG2在16-28周胚胎呼吸系统中有广泛的表达,提示NDRG2在早期胚胎的呼吸系统上皮细胞的生长与发育过程中起一定作用。而阳性产物主要表达在上皮细胞的胞浆中,说明NDRG2可能是一种胞浆蛋白。  相似文献

Evidence is presented, based on sequence comparison according to Hydrophobic Cluster Analysis, of a structural and evolutionary relationship between the human alpha/beta-interferon receptor and the human and mouse gamma-interferon receptor. These results predict that the human alpha/beta-interferon receptor extracellular part is organised in two homologous subdomains connected by a proline linker. They also predict that both subdomains present some homologies to the external domain of mouse and human gamma interferon receptor.  相似文献

Glutathione-S-transferase activity has been identified in the cytosol of human placenta. The specific activity measured is about 50% of that found in human liver. While some kinetic data have a close correspondence with those attributed to transferases of other sources, the molecular weight (60.000 daltons) and electric properties of this protein are unusual. The inhibitory effect of several non-substrate compounds suggests that also the placental Glutathione-S-transferase may play some role in detoxication of exogenous substances.  相似文献

Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against antipterin immunoglobulin and dihydropteridine reductase (DHPR) and also polyclonal antibodies against human dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) were obtained. The anti-idiotypic mAbs and anti-DHPR mAbs bind specifically to human DHFR, Escherichia coli DHFR, soybean seedling DHFR, and human DHPR in solid-phase immunoassays. Further, the mAbs bind to the native but not to the denatured forms of DHFRs. The monoclonal antibodies also inhibit the enzymatic activity of human DHFR but not that of human DHPR. Competitive solid-phase immunoassays show stoichiometric inhibition by methotrexate and partial inhibition by NADPH of mAb binding to human DHFR. Cyanogen bromide fragments derived from human DHFR (residues 15-52 and 53-111), containing several active site residues, bind partially to some of the monoclonal antibodies. Accordingly, polyclonal antibodies to peptide 53-111 of human DHFR cross-react to some extent with human DHPR. Data from competitive immunoassays in which the binding of the various mAbs was tested singly and in combination with other mAbs suggest that these antibodies bind to a common region on human DHFR. The results also indicate that the mAbs display some heterogeneity with respect to specific epitopes. These data suggest that despite the absence of significant amino acid sequence homologies among the various DHFRs and DHPR, they have a fundamentally similar topography at the site of binding of the pterin moiety that is recognized by the anti-idiotypic mAbs generated by pterin. In the relatively simple structure of the pterin ring system there are different substituent groups at positions C4 and C6 in methotrexate, 7,8-dihydrofolate, and 7,8-dihydrobiopterin, suggesting that these antibodies are specific for regions on various proteins that interact with the remainder of the pterin moiety. These mAbs and similar mAbs specified by substituent groups on pterin may thus be used as specific probes or inhibitors of various folate-dependent enzymes and transport proteins. They should also provide insights into some of the general features of antibody recognition of protein antigens.  相似文献

In most parts of the world, research on the human embryo is subject to tight controls. In the United Kingdom it is restricted by means of both a fourteen-day time limit and the permitted purposes of the research. One of the ways in which the argument for these restrictions has been put is in terms of respect. That is, the human embryo is said to be the kind of thing that is worthy of a measure of respect such that there are limits to what can be done to it. This paper considers some of the ways in which this principle of respect has been understood as well as some objections to the very idea that research resulting in the destruction of the human embryo can claim to show that embryo respect. It will be argued that an account of 'respectful destruction' can be articulated on the grounds of our shared finitude as human moral agents, and in particular on the grounds of our shared lack of certainty regarding the moral status of the embryo.  相似文献

Consideration of the potentiality of human embryos to develop characteristics of personhood, such as intellect and will, has figured prominently in arguments against abortion and the use of human embryos for research. In particular, such consideration was the basis for the call of the US President's Council on Bioethics for a moratorium on stem cell research on human embryos. In this paper, I critique the concept of potentiality invoked by the Council and offer an alternative account. In contrast to the Council's view that an embryo's potentiality is determined by definition and is not affected by external conditions that may prevent certain possibilities from ever being realized, I propose an empirically grounded account of potentiality that involves an assessment of the physical and decisional conditions that may restrict an embryo's possibilities. In my view, some human embryos lack the potentiality to become a person that other human embryos have. Assuming for the sake of argument that the potential to become a person gives a being special moral status, it follows that some human embryos lack this status. This argument is then used to support Gene Outka's suggestion that it is morally permissible to experiment on 'spare' frozen embryos that are destined to be destroyed.  相似文献

The development of the ancient DNA technique allows the genetic study of vanished human populations, some of them, as Fueguians and Tasmanians, of great anthropological interest. This possibility, however, involves some new bioethic problems, concerning the origin of the skeletal samples that can be analyzed and the moral authority of living aboriginals with respect to human remains of perhaps several thousand years of antiquity. It is my opinion that, despite some skeletal collections might be unethically gathered by the 19th century anthropologists, the vanished human populations must be genetically studied. If not, after contribute to their disappearance, we will be now ignoring their contribution to the humankind diversity.  相似文献

Human and chimpanzee locomotor behaviors are described and compared using field patterns derived from measurements of the motions at the joints. Field patterns of human and ape bipedalism are so different that it is doubted whether the nonhuman type could ever have been a precursor of the human type. Chimpanzee quadrupedal vertical climbing and human bipedalism are, on the other hand, similar and a particular variety of this kind of climbing probably was the precursor of human bipedalism. Animals adapted to this variation would have had some brachiation-like morphological traits in their pectoral limbs and some hominid-like morphological traits in their pelvic limbs, traits anticipating the human condition. The australopithecines possessed these traits and must have been adapted to arboreal quadrupedal vertical climbing, having the capacity, at the same time, to perform facultative terrestrial bipedalism, moving on the ground in a manner visually identical to that of humans.  相似文献

Despite only approximately 1% difference in genomic DNA sequence, humans and chimpanzees differ considerably in mental and linguistic capabilities, and in susceptibility to some diseases. A recent comparison of gene expression in human and great apes cast some light on the genetic basis of these differences, but more rigorous study is required. Our statistical reanalysis of these microarray data shows that there have indeed been dramatic alterations in the expression of genes in the human brain since the split from chimpanzees, mainly caused by a set of genes with increased (rather than decreased) expression in the human brain.  相似文献
