Background

Despite abatement programs of precursors implemented in many industrialized countries, ozone remains the principal air pollutant throughout the northern hemisphere with background concentrations increasing as a consequence of economic development in former or still emerging countries and present climate change. Some of the highest ozone concentrations are measured in regions with a Mediterranean climate but the effect on the natural vegetation is alleviated by low stomatal uptake and frequent leaf xeromorphy in response to summer drought episodes characteristic of this climate. However, there is a lack of understanding of the respective role of the foliage physiology and leaf xeromorphy on the mechanistic effects of ozone in Mediterranean species. Particularly, evidence about morphological and structural changes in evergreens in response to ozone stress is missing.

Results

Our study was started after observing ozone -like injury in foliage of holm oak during the assessment of air pollution mitigation by urban trees throughout the Madrid conurbation. Our objectives were to confirm the diagnosis, investigate the extent of symptoms and analyze the ecological factors contributing to ozone injury, particularly, the site water supply. Symptoms consisted of adaxial and intercostal stippling increasing with leaf age. Underlying stippling, cells in the upper mesophyll showed HR-like reactions typical of ozone stress. The surrounding cells showed further oxidative stress markers. These morphological and micromorphological markers of ozone stress were similar to those recorded in deciduous broadleaved species. However, stippling became obvious already at an AOT40 of 21 ppm•h and was primarily found at irrigated sites. Subsequent analyses showed that irrigated trees had their stomatal conductance increased and leaf life -span reduced whereas the leaf xeromorphy remained unchanged. These findings suggest a central role of water availability versus leaf xeromorphy for ozone symptom expression by cell injury in holm oak.  相似文献

A technique was developed for sectioning fresh red spruce foliage (Picea rubens Sarg.) for use in fluorescence microscopy. This allowed rapid examination of mesophyll in 3-5 mm needle sections. Healthy, ozone treated and cold stressed needles were examined to assess the utility of this technique for early detection of damage. Healthy mesophyll cells fluoresced bright red, while injured cells fluoresced yellow-green in ozone treated needles, and yellow-orange in frozen needles. Shifts in fluorescence wavelengths may be useful for early detection of injury to mesophyll before it is evident by standard light or electron microscopy.  相似文献

Foliar injury to red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) occurred during the winter of 1989–1990. A range of damage was observed among individual trees, first-year needles on a shoot, and often within an individual needle. Anatomical comparisons of first-year foliage were made to establish patterns of necrosis due to winter injury. Mesophyll tissue was most affected by winter damage. Guard cells adjacent to injured mesophyll cells were also consistently damaged. Early evidence of injury was apparent as an off-color staining of the cytoplasm and slight plasmolysis of the protoplast. Organelle integrity was lost, and there was an extensive reduction of cytoplasmic volume. Spherical bodies of unidentified composition often appeared within the cytoplasm as subcellular integrity was lost. Severe damage resulted in complete loss of cellular structural integrity and adhesion of residual cellular contents to the cell walls. Narrow transition zones between healthy and necrotic tissues were observed, and upper surfaces tended to be more severely affected. There appeared to be a cellular specificity to winter injury within the mesophyll. Completely necrotic cells were often adjacent to apparently healthy cells, and a wide range of injury could be observed within a relatively small area of the needle in partially damaged foliage.  相似文献

Summary The unprecedented rate of depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer will likely lead to appreciable increases in the amount of ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B, 280–320 nm) reaching the earth's surface. In plants, photosynthetic reactions and nucleic acids in the mesophyll of leaves are deleteriously affected by UV-B. We used a fiber-optic microprobe to make direct measurements of the amount of UV-B reaching these potential targets in the mesophyll of intact foliage. A comparison of foliage from a diverse group of Rocky Mountain plants enabled us to assess whether the foliage of some plant life forms appeared more effective at screening UV-B radiation. The leaf epidermis of herbaceous dicots was particularly ineffective at attenuating UV-B; epidermal transmittance ranged from 18–41% and UV-B reached 40–145 m into the mesophyll or photosynthetic tissue. In contrast to herbaceous dicots, the epidermis of 1-year old conifer needles attenuated essentially all incident UV-B and virtually none of this radiation reached the mesophyll. Although the epidermal layer was appreciably thinner in older needles (7 y) at high elevations (Krumholtz), essentially all incident UV-B was attenuated by the epidermis in these needles. The same epidermal screening effectiveness was observed after removal of epicuticular waxes with chloroform. Leaves of woody dicots and grasses appeared intermediate between herbaceous dicots and conifers in their UV-B screening abilities with 3–12% of the incident UV-B reaching the mesophyll. These large differences in UV-B screening effectiveness suggest that certain plant life forms may be more predisposed than others to meet the challenge of higher UV-B levels resulting from stratospheric ozone depletion.  相似文献

Histological and histochemical changes occurred in current-year needles of sensitive clonal selections of Pinus ponderosa Laws under natural summer growing conditions in the San Bernardino National Forest near Los Angeles, California due to fumigations with 0.45 ppm ozone for 12 hr/day. Within five days after the start of fumigation, chloroplasts and carbohydrate stain accumulated in the peripheral portions of mesophyll cells. Concurrently, the homogenous distribution of proteins and nucleic acids was disrupted. Succinate dehydrogenase was localized mostly in guard cells, resin duct epithelial cells, albuminous cells, and differentiating vascular tissues within unfumigated and fumigated leaves. Acid phosphatase activity increased within mesophyll cells during ozone exposure, but there was no association of acid phosphatase or ozone injury with stomata. Wall destruction occurred in mesophyll cells after appreciable intracellular damage. These histological and histochemical changes occurred within 5–7 days, but visual symptoms were not evident until 2–3 weeks after fumigation. It is thus possible to assay ozone damage very soon after exposure if no other external agents cause similar results.  相似文献

The depth of penetration of Ultraviolet-B (UV-B, 300 and 320 nm) and visible (680 nm) light was measured in foliage of Abies lasiocarpa and Picea engelmannii using a fibre-optic microprobe. Measurements were made on foliage at four times during development: needles were sampled from within expanding buds (in bud); within 72 h of emergence from the bud scales (emergent); from elongating branches (elongating); and from foliage that emerged the previous summer (mature). Light attenuation in pre-emergent needles of both species was steep and showed strong wavelength dependence. Short wavelength 300-nm light was attenuated strongly in the developing epidermal layer, but a significant proportion of this potentially damaging UV-B radiation penetrated into the mesophyll. For A. lasiocarpa and P. engelmannii, 99% attenuation of 300-nm light occurred at 51 and 96 μm, respectively, well within the mesophyll. At this stage, however, the bud scales were opaque to light below 400nm. As the epidermal cell walls and cuticle continued to develop and chlorophyll accumulated following emergence from the bud scales, light attenuation, particularly of UV-B radiation, increased. Although no UV-B is transmitted through the epidermis-hypodermis of mature needles, small but measurable quantities of 300- and 320-nm light were measured in the photosynthetic mesophyll of post-emergent and elongating needles. Thus, shortly after emergence from the bud scales in mid-June to mid-July, when incident UV doses are highest, absorption of UV-B radiation by potentially sensitive chromophores in the mesophyll may disrupt physiological and developmental processes in these species. Soluble UV-absorbing pigments accumulated during needle maturation for P. engelmannii but not A. lasiocarpa, suggesting that, for A. lasiocarpa at least, the development of effective UV screening properties in the epidermis may not be related to the induction of soluble flavonoids.  相似文献

Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedlings were fumigated with 1.2–1.5 x ambient ozone over 2 seasons in an open-air experiment. Fumigation started in the early spring and continued into late autumn during both years. Needle and root cell structures were analyzed in the summer, autumn and early winter following the second fumigation period. Under the light microscope an increase in the intercellular space and disintegrating cells in the mesophyll tissue near the stomata and stomatal cavities were observed in the ozone-exposed needles. Darkening of chloroplast stroma, increased plastoglobulus size and decreased chloroplast size were characteristic ultrastructural changes associated with ozone exposure. In addition, less dense grouping of the chloroplasts in the needles of elevated ozone-exposed seedlings as compared to the controls (background ozone) was observed in the early winter. Fewer starch grains and an increased accumulation of tannin-like substances were detected in both mycorrhizal and uninfected roots of ozone-exposed seedlings as compared to the control seedlings. For the first time, we were able to show that the ozone-induced darkening of needle chloroplast stroma is a reversible symptom. An increased frequency of frost injury symptoms indicated that the winter hardening process was disturbed in the needles of ozone-treated seedlings.  相似文献

Saplings of an ozone sensitive clone of birch (Betula pendulaRoth,KL-5-M) were well-watered or exposed to mild drought-stresscombined with ambient or elevated (1.5xthe ambient) ozone for11 weeks in open-field conditions in central Finland. Stomatalresponse, visible injury, chlorophyll and nutrient content, and changes in cellular anatomy and plant growth were studied.Drought stress alone, in ambient ozone, reduced stomatal densityand stomatal conductance. Drought stress and ozone effects wereadditive, reducing total leaf number, foliage area and starchformation in mesophyll cells. Drought stress and ozone effectswere additive, increasing the N concentration in the leaves, the thickness of the upper epidermal cell wall, the number ofpectinaceous projections of mesophyll cell walls, and the vacuolartannin-like depositions and phenolic droplets, regarded as signsof activated stress defence mechanisms. The increase in specificfoliage mass, cytoplasmic lipids (younger leaves), and a condensedappearance of the upper epidermal mucilaginous layer were causedby both drought and ozone, but were not additive. The resultsshow that combined drought stress contributed to birch responsesto 1.5xcurrent ambient ozone concentrations, corresponding tocritical-level ozone exposure. The only beneficial effect ofdrought stress was the slight reduction of visible leaf symptomsinduced by ozone in autumnal leaves.Copyright 1998 Annals ofBotany Company Birch,Betula pendula, sensitive clone, ozone, drought, microscopy.  相似文献

Tropospheric ozone is a widespread and phytotoxic air pollutant in the industrialized world and causes reduced growth in many tree species. It is therefore important that, for example, the responses of the economically important loblolly pine to ozone are determined thoroughly. The objective of the study was to determine changes in ultrastructure, the vanadate-sensitive ATPase activity of the plasma membrane, the fatty acids of plasma membrane phospholipids, visible injury, and growth in loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) needles exposed to different concentrations of ozone in open-top chambers. The treatments were charcoal filtered air (CF), nonfiltered air (NF), or NF-air with ozone added for 12 h daily at 1.5- or 2-fold ambient ozone concentrations from May to October, 1993. Visible injury was more severe in the high than in the low ozone treatments. Growth of needles of the first flush of 1993 was significantly reduced in the highest ozone treatment. Two types of ultrastructural injury, characterized as either acute or chronic, were observed in mesophyll cells under elevated ozone. The acute injury lead to cell collapse and death. The chronic injury, characterized by several symptoms, e.g. decreased chloroplast size and increased density of the stroma, was also found in the NF ozone treatment. Increased density of chloroplast stroma and swelling of thylakoids were transient symptoms, suggesting partial recovery as ozone concentrations decreased in fall. Ozone induced decreases in the specific activity of vanadate-sensitive ATPase of plasmalemma and in the degree of unsaturation in phospholipid fatty acids. The detected reduced needle growth, ultrastructural injury and perturbations in the function and composition of the plasma membrane indicate susceptibility of loblolly pine to ozone. Changes in the plasma membrane phospholipids may have contributed to the decrease in ATPase activity. Injury to the key enzyme of the plasma membrane can directly affect intracellular processes. In the long-term, decreased viability of needles can lead to reductions in loblolly pine productivity.  相似文献

Summary This study evaluated the contribution of different ages of foliage to the nutrient and carbon balance of black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) from a nutrient-poor peatland in Alberta. Seasonal patterns of foliar nitrogen and phosphorus concentration and content were examined in six needle cohorts up to 10 years old. Trees were treated to simulate excess nutrient deficiency (removal of all one-year-old foliage), nutrient excess (fertilized with 250, 50, 100 kg ha–1 NPK split application in June and July), or left as controls. Gas exchange (net assimilation-Na, stomatal conductance-gs, mesophyll conductance-gm, water-use efficiency-WUE, dark respiration-RS) was measured on six different needle cohorts in several control trees in 1989 and 1990. Nitrogen and phosphorus concentration decreased with needle age. Foliar nutrient concentration fell from April to June and then was stable until September except for the fertilized trees where it increased. There was no evidence of greater than normal retranslocation of nutrients from older needles for defoliated trees or greater than normal nutrient loading in older needles of fertilized trees. NA, gs, gm, WUE, and RS were similar for all needles up to six or eight years old, these older needles having NA of 65% of current needles and similar RS. The results do not support to conclusion that older needles of black spruce are retained as an adaptation to nutrient stress. It does not appear that older needles serve as a nutrient storage site in conditions of excess nutrient availability or a greater than normal nutrient source during times of excess nutrient deficiency. It appears that the maintenance of long-livedfoliage in black spruce does not provide for greater flexibility in tree nutrient allocation. Their contribution to the carbon balance of the tree seems to be sufficient to explain their retention.  相似文献

Effects of ozone exposure on polyamines in Pinus sylvestris L. were studied in a long-term experiment. Ten- to 15-year-old Scots pines were exposed to target ozone levels which began at ambient + 40 ppb in May, decreasing to ambient air only by September for 3 growing seasons. The amount of ozone applied followed the natural pattern of variation in ozone concentrations in Northern Finland. The free, soluble conjugated and insoluble conjugated polyamines were analyzed during the experiment and shortly after termination of exposure as well as at the beginning of the following growing season. A carry-over effect was observed as ozone-induced reduction of free spermidine in the oldest needle year class, which developed during the first exposure season of the experiment. This reduction was observed both after the second and the third ozone exposure season. Conversely, after termination of the experiment, levels of free polyamines increased in the following growing season, and soluble conjugated polyamines decreased in the developing needles. The post-treatment changes in polyamine concentrations are hypothesized to be caused by stress-induced injuries or delayed recovery of metabolic processes rather than protective responses. It is noteworthy that some responses in polyamines were found in the developing needles nine months after terminating the ozone exposure. This suggests that stress-induced injuries to older needles affected metabolism of new developing needles.  相似文献

The development and physiological consequences of ozone-induced visible injury was investigated in native populations of Jeffrey pine (Pinus jeffreyi) that were exposed to chronic levels of anthropogenic ozone. Stand structure analyses demonstrated that the expression of visible ozone injury symptoms within self-regenerating populations of Jeffrey pine was highly variable. Of the 975 trees surveyed, 90% exhibited some degree of visible injury and 10% were classified as resistant to ozone. Needles of the most sensitive trees developed a chlorotic mottle characteristic of ozone injury 1 year after their initiation and prematurely abscised in their third year (normal needle retention is 5–6 years). Average needle retention was not different between diameter size categories but was the most variable within the smallest size category and the least variable in the largest size category. Gas exchange measurements indicated a negative correlation between photosynthetic rate and needle surface area covered by chlorotic mottle. Chlorophyll fluorescence kinetics of the current-year needles did not differ between symptomatic and asymptomatic trees but did differ between the oldest needles, suggesting an uncontrolled physiological decline in needles about to abscise in sensitive trees. The high degree of variability of ozone-induced visible injury coupled with the reduction of physiological capacity associated with visible injury suggest that mixed conifer forests growing in polluted regions could potentially undergo shifts in community structure if sensitive Jeffrey pine individuals were to experience differential mortality as a result of ozone exposure. Intraspecific variation in ozone sensitivity may potentially lead to increased population tolerance to oxidative air pollutants, but long-term population analyses will be required to address genetic changes in response to ozone stress.  相似文献

Effects of ozone and/or drought on Norway spruce needles werestudied using light microscopy and electron microscopy. Saplingswere exposed to ozone in open-top chambers during 1992–1995and also to drought in the late summers of 1993–1995.Samples from current and previous year needles were collectedfive times during 1995. Ozone increased the numbers of peroxisomesand mitochondria, which suggests that defence mechanisms againstoxidative stress were active. The results from peroxisomes suggestthat the oxidative stress was more pronounced in the upper sideof the needles, and those from mitochondria that defence wasmore active in the younger needle generation. Possibly due tothe good nitrogen status and the active defence, no ozone-specificchloroplast alterations were seen. At the end of the season, older needles from ozone treatments had smaller central vacuolescompared with other needles. Cytoplasmic vacuoles around thenucleus were increased by ozone in the beginning of the experiment, and did not increase towards the end of the season as in thecontrols. These results from vacuoles may indicate that ozoneaffected the osmotic properties of the cells. Decreased numberand underdevelopment of sclerenchyma cells and proliferationof tonoplast were related to nutrient imbalance, which was enhancedby drought. Larger vascular cylinders and more effective starchaccumulation before and after the drought periods compensatedfor the reduced water status. Numbers of peroxisomes and mitochondriawere increased in the drought-exposed needles before the onsetof drought treatments of the study year, i.e. these changeswere memory effects. Interactions between ozone and droughtwere few.  相似文献

Three-year-old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedlings were exposed to ambient or elevated ozone (O3) (1.52ambient) and carbon dioxide (CO2) (590 µmol mol-1) concentrations during two growing seasons in open-top field chambers (OTCs). Five different treatments were applied in the chambers: filtered air, ambient air, elevated O3, elevated CO2, and elevated O3 and CO2 combined. Ambient plots outside the OTCs were also included, but the chamber ambient was used as a control in O3 and CO2 treatments due to a significant chamber effect. Increases in yellowing and chlorotic mottling of previous-year (C+1) needles and in the amount of cytoplasmic ribosomes and electron density of the chloroplast stroma in current-year (C) and C+1 needle mesophyll cells were observed in elevated O3 at both CO2 concentrations. Elevated O3 alone caused a non-significant 10.9% decrease in plant total dry mass and a significant decrease in manganese (Mn) content of C needles. CO2 enrichment caused a significant increase in needle cross-sectional width after the first year of exposure, and an accumulation of starch and slight curling and swelling of the chloroplast thylakoids in the mesophyll tissue of C needles after the second year of exposure. Calcium and Mn contents were increased and copper and nitrogen contents were decreased, significantly, in CO2-exposed needles. A non-significant 19.1% increase in plant total dry mass was measured in elevated CO2 alone, whereas a 14.8% reduction in total dry mass, together with a significant reduction in current-year main shoot length, was found in the combined treatment. Overall, in spite of decreases in O3-induced visible injuries by CO2, elevated CO2 levels were not able to counteract the impact of O3 in this experiment.  相似文献

Microscopy has been used to diagnose the effects of air pollutantson conifers. As sampling may be slow, it is important to knowwhether the structure of needles changes during the day. Usinglight- and electron microscopy, diurnal changes in the structureof mesophyll cells of current year needles from 6-year-old Norwayspruce saplings were studied on one day in early autumn, 1995.Saplings had been grown in open-top chambers and exposed toozone and drought stress during the 1992–1995 growingseasons. In all treatments, the proportion of cells with smallcytoplasmic vacuoles and with large cytoplasmic lipid depositsdecreased during the day. Mitochondria increased in size fromearly morning to midday, after which time they shrank progressively.Ozone affected the shape of mitochondria: the proportion oftube-shaped mitochondria decreased from early morning in controlsaplings, whereas it increased in ozone-treated saplings. Starchaccumulated during the day, but to a lesser extent in drought-stressedsaplings than well-watered controls. Microbodies were smallerin drought-stressed saplings than in controls early in the morning, but their size then increased compared to that of the controls.Cellular and sub-cellular disorganization, probably due to sub-optimalfixation procedures, were detected in all treatments, especiallyin the morning, but these decreased later, particularly in well-wateredsaplings. Results show that microscopy is a sensitive and validtool for studying stress responses in plants. However, the timeof sample collection must be considered and documented to avoidmisleading conclusions due to actual diurnal changes and fixationproblems. Red spruce trees (Picea rubens Sarg.) occasionally produce short twigs bearing short needles. The frequency of short needle cohorts is positively correlated with both elevation and defoliation and they are found in greater numbers on trees that regularly experience winter injury. Short needles are smaller, have lower fresh and dry weights, and reduced volumes compared with normal needles. They have reduced cross-sectional areas due to smaller areas of stelar and mesophyll tissue systems. Individual mesophyll cells, however, have the same cross- and longitudinal sectional areas. On a weight or volume basis, both short and normal needles contain similar amounts of chlorophyll and carotenoid pigments. When pigment concentration was calculated on a unit needle or a needle area base, short needles contain more pigment than normal needles. Short needles appear to have a greater photosynthetic efficiency as determined by fluorescence measurements.  相似文献

Summary The cellular structures of acid rain-irrigated needles of several provenances of Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst) seedlings were studied after winter experimental freezing. Frost injuries and recovery were characterized by visual damage scoring and classification of mesophyll cell alterations, also using histochemical methods for carbohydrate fluorescent staining. The treatment with-30° C during the late dormancy period was sufficient to cause significant injuries and intracellular degradation in the tissues of the green needles. The most affected seedlings in terms of visual injury scoring were found among those treated with clean water or at pH 3, while freezing injury, defined as an occlusion of phenolic substances in the central vacuole of the mesophyll cells, was most abundant in the needles from spruces irrigated either with clean water or at pH 4 or pH 3. Electron microscopy revealed the details of the injury, e. g. thinning out of the cytoplasm and chloroplast stroma, darkening of the chloroplasts and eventually swelling of the chloroplasts and protoplast. PAS and ConA reactions in the needle tissue revealed intense starch accumulation in the mesophyll and transfusion tissues as early as in March, with a tendency to increase, especially in the untreated needles during the recovery period. Plasma membrane disturbances were indicated by histochemical identification of callose deposits in the mesophyll cell walls, these being most abundant in the acid rain-treated needles. All these findings suggest that freezing at –30° C was more deleterious to the seedlings pretreated with acid or clean water than to those not given additional irrigation.  相似文献

Needle ageing and senescence were studied in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) trees growing in natural conditions with minimal anthropogenic influence. The four existing needle generations were analyzed by light and transmission electron microscopy before and during autumnal yellowing of the oldest needle generation. The change from green to yellow occurred within less than 4 days in central Finland. The structure of the oldest needles remained largely intact as long as they were green. Increase in mitochondrion size and hypertrophy of the phloem parenchyma were the only changes, probably related to the approaching senescence. In the yellow needles, the structure of the mesophyll tissue varied from nearly intact with reduced chloroplasts and higher numbers of plastoglobuli, to totally disintegrated cells. In the disintegrated cells, peroxisomes were absent, and chloroplasts were smaller with a patchy appearance and degraded, eventually empty-looking stroma. Mitochondria were enlarged, but retained integrity until the last stages of deterioration, and lipids increased. At the light microscopic level, vacuolar volume in mesophyll cells and cavity formation in transfusion tissue increased. Ageing was characterized by increases in the vacuolar volume and cytoplasmic lipids, altered appearance of vacuolar tannin from homogenous ‘sandy’, to large spherical drops and finally to a large mass in the mesophyll, and by hypertrophy and tannin accumulation in the phloem parenchyma. Changes related to needle ageing, senescence and cell location in the mesophyll tissue were discussed relative to findings with stress by strong light, weather conditions and ozone.  相似文献

It is known that protoplasts derived from either leaves or suspension cultures of a citrus genotype vary greatly in their regeneration capacities; however, the underlying physiological mechanisms are not well known. In this study, oxidative stress and antioxidant systems during in vitro culture of callus-derived protoplasts and leaf mesophyll-derived protoplasts of Ponkan (Citrus reticulata Blanco) were analyzed to gain insights into observed physiological differences. Morphological observations using light microscopy and scanning microscopy have shown that new cell wall materials appeared within 2–3 days, and the integrate cell walls were regenerated approximately after 6 days of culture of the callus protoplasts, whereas no cell wall formation was observed in the mesophyll protoplasts after culture. During the culture, higher levels of H2O2 and malondialdehyde were detected in the mesophyll protoplasts as compared with the callus ones. On the contrary, the callus protoplasts possessed higher activities of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, POD and CAT) and larger amount of glutathione and ascorbic acid (at one time point) than the mesophyll protoplasts during the culture process. The current data indicate that the mesophyll and callus protoplasts displayed remarkable difference in the degree of oxidative stress and the antioxidant systems, suggesting that high levels of antioxidant activities might play an important role in the regeneration of protoplasts.  相似文献

Foliage of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) was collected in a mixed pine/oak forest at canopy positions differing in radiation environment. In both species, chlorophyll (Chl) a/b ratios were higher in foliage of canopy positions exposed to higher irradiance as compared to more shaded crown layers. Throughout the growing season, pine needles exhibited significantly lower Chl a/b ratios than oak leaves acclimated to a similar photon availability. Hence, pine needles showed shade-type pigment characteristics relative to foliage of oak. At a given radiation environment, pine needles tended to contain more neoxanthin and lutein per unit of Chl than oak leaves. The differences in pigment composition between foliage of pine and oak can be explained by a higher ratio of outer antennae Chl to core complex Chl in needles of P. sylvestris which enhances the efficiency of photon capture under limiting irradiance. The shade-type pigment composition of pine relative to oak foliage could have been due to a reduced mesophyll internal photon exposure of chloroplasts in needles of Scots pine, resulting from their xeromorphic anatomy. Hence, the higher drought tolerance of pine needles could be achieved at the expense of shade tolerance.  相似文献
