Background and Aims

There is increasing evidence that suppressed bud burst and thus epicormic shoot emergence (sprouting) are controlled by water–carbohydrate supplies to entire trees and buds. This direct evidence is still lacking for oak. In other respects, recent studies focused on sessile oak, Quercus petraea, have confirmed the important constraints of sprouting by epicormic ontogeny. The main objective of this paper was thus to provide provisional confirmation of the water–carbohydrate control and direct evidence of the ontogenic constraints by bringing together results already published in separate studies on water status and distribution of carbohydrates, and on accompanying vegetation and epicormics, which also quantify epicormic ontogeny.

Methods

This paper analyses results gained from a sessile oak experiment in which part of the site was free from fairly tall, dense accompanying vegetation. This experiment was initially focused on stand water status and more recently on the carbohydrate distribution of dominant trees. External observations of the epicormic composition and internal observations with X-ray computer tomography were undertaken on 60 and six trees, respectively.

Key Results

Sprouting was more intense in the part of the stand free from accompanying vegetation and on upper trunk segments. A clear effect of epicormic ontogeny was demonstrated as well: the more epicormics a trunk segment bears, the more chances it had to bear sprouts.

Conclusions

These results indirectly infer water–carbohydrate control and show direct evidence of constraints by epicormic ontogeny. These results have far-reaching consequences related to the quantification of all functions fulfilled by any type of epicormic structure in any part of the tree.  相似文献

Background and Aims

European beech epicormics have received far less attention than epicormics of other species, especially sessile oak. However, previous work on beech has demonstrated that there is a negative effect of radial growth on trunk sprouting, while more recent investigations on sessile oak proved a strong positive influence of the presence of epicormics. The aims of this study were, first, to make a general quantification of the epicormics present along beech stems and, secondly, to test the effects of both radial growth and epicormic frequency on sprouting.

Methods

In order to test the effect of radial growth, ten forked individuals were sampled, with a dominant and a dominated fork of almost equal length for every individual. To test the effects of primary growth and epicormic frequency, on the last 17 annual shoots of each fork arm, the number of axillary buds, shoot length, ring width profiles, epicormic shoots and other epicormics were carefully recorded.

Key Results

The distribution of annual shoot length, radial growth profiles and parallel frequencies of all epicormics are presented. The latter frequencies were parallel to the annual shoot lengths, nearly equivalent for both arms of each tree, and radial growth profiles included very narrow rings in the lowest annual shoots and even missing rings in the dominated arms alone. The location of the latent buds and the epicormics was mainly at branch base, while epicormic shoots, bud clusters and spheroblasts were present mainly in the lowest annual shoots investigated. Using a zero-inflated mixed model, sprouting was shown to depend positively on epicormic frequency and negatively on radial growth.

Conclusions

Support for a trade-off between cambial activity and sprouting is put forward. Sprouting mainly depends on the frequency of epicormics. Between- and within-tree variability of the epicormic composition in a given species may thus have fundamental and applied implications.  相似文献

基于对6块樟子松(Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica)人工林固定标准地中的30株样木枝解析调查数据,通过分析不同林分、不同大小林木1级枝和2级枝的分枝概率、分枝格局和分枝角度,揭示了樟子松人工林树冠的分枝结构特点。研究结果表明:樟子松人工林1级枝和2级枝的平均分枝数量分别为3.84个和2.80个,两者分枝概率均呈正态分布;1级和2级枝条在光照条件好的几个区间(方位角46°~225°)分布较多,1级枝条的水平分布遵从均匀分布,而2级枝条则不遵从均匀分布;树冠上层枝条的分枝角度略小于树冠中、下层,上层平均分枝角度为45.6°,而中下层平均分枝角度都为49.4°。不同大小林木的1级枝分枝结构规律表明:Ⅰ级木和Ⅴ级木的每轮平均分枝数非常接近,分别为3.89和3.94个,比Ⅲ级木每轮分枝数大0.5个左右;1级枝水平分布在各区间内(45°间隔)相差在0.24%~2.81%之间,方差分析结果表明枝条水平分布与林木大小无关;不同大小林木的分枝角度有所差别,Ⅰ级木、Ⅲ级木和Ⅴ级木的平均分枝角度分别为48.5°、42.2°和50.7°。  相似文献

We assembled a dataset tabulating the weights of Thai and Indonesian mangrove trees that we measured between 1982 and 2001. We selected four Thai study sites in Phang Nga, Ranong, Satun, and Trat Provinces and one site in eastern Indonesia on Halmahera Island in Maluku Province. The stands in Ranong Province and on Halmahera Island were in primary forests with data collected in the 1980s and the remaining stands were in secondary forests with data collected later. We collected 124 tree samples from ten species (Avicennia alba, Bruguiera cylindrica, B. gymnorrhiza, Ceriops tagal, Rhizophora apiculata, R. mucronata, Sonneratia alba, S. caseolaris, Xylocarpus granatum, and X. moluccensis) and measured the root weights of 32 individuals of nine species (A. alba, B. cylindrica, B. gymnorrhiza, C. tagal, R. apiculata, R. mucronata, S. alba, S. caseolaris, and X. granatum). All sampled trees were subjected to a standardized protocol to obtain aboveground weights. The trunks were divided into horizontal segments from which the leaves and branches were collected separately. Roots were collected by winching them out of the ground, by trench digging, or by complete excavation. Thus, we were able to compile the weights of the trunk, branches, leaves, and roots of each tree sampled. Aerial roots were included in root weight measurements, although they were collected above ground. We compiled separate lists of trunk diameters, trunk heights, heights of the lowest living branches, and the heights of aerial roots on the trunks of trees in different size categories. Our dataset includes a wide range of tree sizes (maximum trunk diameter 48.9 cm), geographical locations (1°10′N–12°24′N, 98°32′E–123°49′E) and organ weights (trunks, branches, leaves, and roots), and therefore should prove useful in future biomass studies of mangrove forests.  相似文献

A study of the formation of epicormic branches on suppressedbeech trees revealed developmental sequences that had not hithertobeen studied in depth. By combining architectural analysis andanatomy, it was possible to trace the history of the plant andthus fully understand the ontogenesis of the individuals studied.The main sequences observed were: (1) the formation of moribundtrees that were gradually covered in epicormic branches fromthe base of the stem to the crown following gradual forest closure;(2) the formation of this new crown of epicormic branches wascombined with a very sharp reduction in stem cambial activity(partial rings, if any) and modifications to the ligneous sections;and (3) resumed girth increment following the establishmentof epicormic branches. After describing in detail the methodsand individual variation, we highlight the spatial and temporalpatterns of the phenomena observed. Lastly, we put forward functionalhypotheses with a view to setting these results against a backgroundof forest tree ontogenesis in general. Functional branch analysis (FBA) is a promising non-destructive method that can produce accurate tree biomass equations when applied to trees which exhibit fractal branching architecture.

Abstract

Functional branch analysis (FBA) is a promising non-destructive alternative to the standard destructive method of tree biomass equation development. In FBA, a theoretical model of tree branching architecture is calibrated with measurements of tree stems and branches to estimate the coefficients of the biomass equation. In this study, species-specific and mixed-species tree biomass equations were derived from destructive sampling of trees in Western Kenya and compared to tree biomass equations derived non-destructively from FBA. The results indicated that the non-destructive FBA method can produce biomass equations that are similar to, but less accurate than, those derived from standard methods. FBA biomass prediction bias was attributed to the fact that real trees diverged from fractal branching architecture due to highly variable length–diameter relationships of stems and branches and inaccurate scaling relationships for the lengths of tree crowns and trunks assumed under the FBA model.  相似文献

Natural root grafting has been observed in more than 150 tree species where up to 90 % of trees could be interconnected within a stand. Intraspecific root grafting was previously found in Pinus banksiana stands, ranging from 21 to 71 % of trees grafted with one another. It is not known why root grafting is frequent in some species and not in others, or why not all roots that cross form root grafts. We investigated genetic diversity of grafted and non-grafted trees to determine if there was a relationship between genetic distance and the probability of forming natural root grafts. Seven plots were hydraulically excavated in four natural forest stands and three plantations of P. banksiana in the western boreal forest of Quebec, Canada. At pairs scale, we studied the effect of geographic and genetic distances on root grafting occurrence. At stand level, we analysed the effect of tree density, soil type, stand type and mean pairwise relatedness on the mean number of grafts per tree and on the percentage of grafted trees per plot. At pairs scale, our analysis revealed that root grafting presence was influenced by spatial distance between trees and less importantly, by genetic distance between individuals. At stand level, root grafting frequency was correlated with stand type (greater in naturally regenerated stands), but not with genetic diversity between individuals. In conclusion, root grafting appears to be principally linked to tree proximity and slightly to genetic proximity between individuals.  相似文献

Quercus pollen is one of the most abundant pollen types in the atmosphere of central Iberian Peninsula (Spain), as a consequence of the extensive representation of well-preserved forests and shrub communities dominated by species of the genus Quercus in this area. This paper analysed key features of the Quercus pollination season in the central Iberian Peninsula and the influence of weather-related variables on airborne Quercus pollen concentration through statistical techniques of correlation analysis and the use of a decision tree model for predicting pollen concentrations. Quercus species are very common in Spain and Portugal, dominating a number of ecosystems including Mediterranean forests. This gives rise to very high airborne Quercus pollen concentrations, particularly in spring. Sampling was carried out over a 6-year period using a Hirst volumetric sampler, and the sampling procedure established by the Spanish Aerobiology Network. Results show that between 92 and 98.5 % of total annual airborne Quercus pollen was recorded in the April–June period. Annual pollen index were high in all study years, averaging 12,344 grains, but it should be highlighted that pollen production was highly variable between years. Correlations between mean daily Quercus pollen concentration and weather-related variables showed that in the pre-peak period, a significant positive correlation was observed with the mean daily temperature and the hours of sunshine and a negative correlation was observed with the humidity and the rainfall. In the post-peak period, a significant negative correlation was found with the mean daily temperature and the hours of sunshine. The predictions obtained in the decision tree model showed a moderate significant correlation (r = 0.42) with the daily Quercus pollen concentration predicted and the one observed. Temperature is the most influential variable in the release of Quercus pollen.  相似文献

In broadleaved temperate forests in Europe, oak (Quercus robur/Q. petraea) regeneration is reported to be weak or absent. However, most work concern seedlings or saplings, studied relatively few years. We studied a Picea abies stand in Sweden, windthrown and logged (all stems harvested) in 1969, testing the hypothesis that oaks regenerate in the long term among competing tree species after catastrophic disturbance. In 2011, after 40 years/growth seasons, we recorded live and dead trees in the new stand and investigated the surroundings, competition, and succession. The following trees, up to 26 m tall, colonized: Sorbus aucuparia, Betula pendula/B. pubescens, Fagus sylvatica, Q. robur/Q. petraea, and Corylus avellana (a shrub). Betula dominated, and only Fagus was regenerating in 2011. Sorbus had produced most of the dead trees, mainly or partly through intraspecific competition. In the stand, compared to the surroundings, Quercus, Picea, and Alnus glutinosa were under-represented, and Sorbus, Betula, and Fagus were over-represented. Yet, the density of Quercus was far from negligible; 48 large trees/ha. Most of the oaks (74 %) were co-dominant trees and many grew near Sorbus. Thus, oaks can survive and grow fast among pioneer trees and browsing animals, a conclusion which is supported by the literature (nine studies identified). High mortality of Sorbus is part of a long-term succession, where Fagus might come to dominate. However, Quercus likely will persist, in low density. We propose three key traits contributing to long-term persistence of Q. robur/Q. petraea in European temperate forests: long life span, ecological plasticity, and resistance to disturbances.  相似文献

Somatic embryogenesis of Abies alba (Mill.) has significant potential to become an effective method for vegetative propagation of this species. To induce somatic embryogenesis in A. alba, the influence of the mother tree, sampling dates, and cold treatment storage of cones were examined. The initiation frequencies ranged from 1.7% to 16.6%. The sampling date and cone storage, but not the mother tree, had a significant effect on the initiation of embryogenic cultures. Storage of embryogenic cell lines was tested through cryopreservation for 6 yr. Four out of 12 cryostored embryogenic cell lines recovered, and the regeneration of cotyledonary embryos was obtained with two cell lines. The ability of embryogenic cell masses to produce somatic embryos and the mean number of cotyledonary embryos were higher when the maturation protocol was based on embryogenic suspensions dispersed on filter paper. The properly developed germinants were obtained only from maturation media where 32 μM abscisic acid was used, being 16.2% when polyethylene glycol (PEG) was not present and 1.8% when supplemented with 10% (w/v) PEG, respectively. The present study provides evidence that it is possible to cryopreserve A. alba embryogenic cultures while maintaining their maturing ability for the lengthy period (6 yr) needed for progeny testing of field-grown trees. Therefore, our findings are important for further studies and advanced breeding work of the species; however, the conversion of germinants into ex vitro conditions still remains a significant challenge.  相似文献

以冀北山地阴坡两种混交林分中5种优势树种为研究对象,采用分形几何理论,论述了不同树种的树冠和侧枝分维结构,结果表明:(1)华北落叶松的树冠最宽处处于中上部(相对冠高的60% -80%),白桦处于中部(40%-60%),山杨和糠椴都处于中下部(40%-50%),落叶松桦木混交林中的黑桦处于上部(70% -80%),而山杨桦木混交林中黑桦则处于中部(50%-60%);(2)通过计盒维数法所得华北落叶松树冠的分形维数最大为1.690,山杨桦木混交林中4种树木分维数较接近(0.770-1.202),而两混交林中,前者白桦分维数(0.997)与后者(1.149)相似,而前者黑桦分维数(1.257)>后者(0.770);(3)胸径13.1cm的华北落叶松侧枝在各方向上符合均匀分布,总体也符合均匀分布,前者中的黑桦在胸径15.8 cm时绝大多数方向上为均匀分布,前者中白桦及后者中4种树木在不同胸径时在各个方向上均为不均匀分布;(4)华北落叶松侧枝倾角随树龄增大分布在85-95°,糠椴则分布在55-85°.山杨树龄小(5.3)与树龄大(16.5)时分布在40-55°,中间树龄(10.5)分布在60-80°,黑桦分布在30-65°,前者中白桦倾角范围25-90°,后者则主要分布在45--85°;(5)采用网格覆盖法所得华北落叶松枝条的分维数平均值最高为1.772,其次为山杨桦木混交林中的4种树木,而两混交林中黑桦枝条的平均分维数却相差很大,其中前者为1.476,而后者为1.674.尽管同一树种侧枝形状大小各异,但相互间差异不显著,相关系数均在0.93以上,刻画了各枝条分枝格局的自相似共性.  相似文献

Studying sleeping behavior can provide key information for understanding the ecology of a species. Antipredation is an important factor that affects primate sleeping behavior. We studied antipredation sleeping behavior in skywalker hoolock gibbons (Hoolock tianxing). We studied one group (NA) and a solitary female (NB) at Nankang from July 2010 to September 2011, and another group (BB) at Banchang from May 2013 to December 2014 in Mt. Gaoligong, Yunnan, China. Over the study period, we recorded 67 sleeping trees for members of group NA over 92 days, 17 trees for the solitary female NB over 22 days, and 159 trees for members of group BB over 186 days. Skywalker hoolock gibbons at both sites rarely used the same tree on consecutive days (N = 3 at both sites). They traveled fast to enter sleeping tree a mean of 160 ± SD 43 min before sunset at Nankang, and a mean of 192 ± SD 40 min before sunset at Banchang. They seldom (Nankang: 14%, N = 183 observations; Banchang: 25%, N = 548 observations) defecated in sleeping trees. They slept at sites with more tall and large trees and preferred to sleep on tall trees in the site. They slept on branches of small diameter and closer to tree tops. Our study suggests that antipredation plays an important role in skywalker hoolock gibbons’ sleeping tree selection and sleeping behavior. In addition, our data suggest potential effects of habitat degradation on gibbons’ sleeping behavior. Tall trees are especially important for gibbons in degraded forest and should be protected.  相似文献

Large aerial roots grow out from the branches of injured Dracaena draco trees. They integrate with the trunk or cause the branches to break off the tree and deform it.

Abstract

Dracaena draco, the dragon tree, is an iconic monocot of the Canary Islands with a tree-like growth habit and some distinctive features that are unique in the plant kingdom. We report about the massive aerial roots in this tree. They appear on trees that are injured or under environmental stress and affect growth form and the whole life of the plant. We analysed the growth of these roots and tested our findings in experiments on plants. Clusters of these roots emerge from the bases of the lowest branches and growing down they may reach the soil. Descending along the trunk, they cling tightly to the trunk, integrate with it and contribute to its radial growth. This may explain (1) why the trunk of a mature D. draco tree looks fibrous, as if made of many individual strands, and (2) how some trees reach enormous radial dimensions. Alternately, a large, 2–5 m high, multi-segmented branch with aerial roots at its base, may break off the tree and grow on its own, as a mammoth off-cut, perhaps the largest known in the plant kingdom. This detachment would cause a significant reduction in the size of the crown and deform its original, highly organized pattern of branching. In the extreme condition this may result in the destruction of the mother plant.  相似文献

Abstract

A widespread compositional shift has been reported in QuercusCarya forests throughout the eastern USA. Quercus and Carya are failing to regenerate and understories of these stands are increasingly dominated by shade-tolerant mesophytes. Important in this successional shift are the canopy accession strategies and climate sensitivities of the dominant and projected replacement species. The goals of our study were to document establishment and canopy accession strategies and examine the relationships between climate variables and radial growth for Carya glabra, Carya ovata, and Carya alba. The majority (75 %) of Carya individuals established in open canopy conditions. However, 40 % of our samples experienced suppression before canopy accession. Average age at canopy accession for trees that were suppressed prior to canopy recruitment was 49 years. Carya that established in closed canopy conditions were suppressed an average of 22 years and were 2.6 cm diameter at breast height (dbh) before they ascended to the canopy or experienced a release episode. Gap origin-gap release trees were in open canopy conditions for an average of 18 years and were 6.5 cm dbh before experiencing a period of suppression. The three species exhibited similar responses to climate as they were generally sensitive to prior spring and current summer temperature, and prior winter and current summer precipitation, but radial growth trends were controlled more strongly by canopy position than climate. Maintenance of Carya in successional stands will require increases in understory light and reductions in competition from shade-tolerant mesophytes. Our results indicate that canopy disturbances larger than the gap-scale are needed for Carya establishment and canopy recruitment.  相似文献

Abstract

Layering is an important mode of vegetative reproduction at treeline, in which clonal daughter trees are formed by the rooting of lower (“layering”) branches of the parent tree. These branches mediate the connection between parent (PT) and daughter tree (DT). Here, we measured quantity and direction of sap flow in layering branches as well as PT and DT, and measured shoot water potentials in the crowns of a connected PT and DT. We found bidirectional sap flow pattern in layering branches, with the bidirectionality of the flow resulting from water potential dynamics of the parent and daughter trees varying diurnally. We found that 4.3 % of the total water transpired by the DT was supplied by the PT root system, with up to 25 % of the instantaneous daughter tree sap flow coming from the parent tree. In contrast, water provided by the daughter’s root system to the parent tree comprised only a negligible amount, less than 1 % of the parent’s entire sap flow. Additionally, after experimental excavation of part of the DT roots, layering branch flow towards the DT increased, while flows in the opposite direction almost vanished. This study showed that aboveground clonal connections can facilitate a new type of hydraulic redistribution where water is transported bidirectionally through branches. This transfer of water and nutrients is vital especially in the first years of the daughter tree but supplies considerable amounts of water even several years after the establishment of a new clonal tree.

Abstract

Epicormic resprouting has various ecological advantages over basal resprouting. However, after higher intensity fires epicormic resprouting is rare as it is difficult for trees and shrubs to keep both their buds and vascular cambia alive. Quercus suber (cork oak) is the only European tree that can resprout epicormically after higher intensity fires. Q. suber develops very thick bark and it has been assumed, without anatomical evidence, that the bark protects the epicormic buds. We investigated if developmental anatomy could explain why Q. suber is an excellent post-fire epicormic resprouter. We examined buds from mature Q. suber trees, macroscopically using a stereo microscope and microscopically using semi-thin microtome sections. Q. suber produced buds in the foliage leaf axils and the bud scale axils. With the commencement of extensive phellem (cork) production the base of the epicormic buds remained at, or just below, the level of the phellogen and thus cork began to bury the buds, although a narrow tube connected each bud to the bark surface. Q. suber epicormic buds became deeply buried in the phellem and would be protected from heat by the full phellem thickness. With its rapid and substantial development of phellem Q. suber had well-protected epicormic buds even in relatively small diameter stems. These results provide the anatomical evidence to show why Q. suber is a noted epicormic resprouter after crown fire.

The cultivation of Lactarius deliciosus (saffron milk cap) in New Zealand began in 2002 when fruiting bodies were produced in an Otago plantation of Pinus radiata seedlings artificially mycorrhized by L. deliciosus. In 2007, 42 P. radiata seedlings mycorrhized by L. deliciosus under controlled conditions were planted in a grass field at Plant and Food Research (Lincoln, Canterbury). The effects of pine bark mulch application and initial degree of mycorrhization of seedlings were examined to determine their influence on tree growth, development of mycorrhizae (i.e. their multiplication on the root system and their degree of branching) and fruiting body production. Mulch application increased tree growth significantly over 4 years. High initial mycorrhization slightly stimulated tree growth over 2 years. The initial degree of mycorrhization was positively, but not strongly, related to the persistence and development of L. deliciosus mycorrhizae and rhizomorphs based on root sample analyses 2 years after planting. However, mulching strongly reduced the proportion of highly branched L. deliciosus mycorrhizae compared with poorly ramified ones. A positive correlation was observed between the fruiting of L. deliciosus and the development of mycorrhizae. Mulching delayed the onset of fruiting body production. In 2010, fruiting bodies were produced only from non-mulched trees with eight of these (38 %) producing a total of 12 fruiting bodies. In 2011, 19 non-mulched trees (90 %) and 9 mulched trees (45 %) produced 143 and 47 fruiting bodies, respectively, totalling 190 fruiting bodies. By 2012, 19 non-mulched trees (90 %) and 13 mulched trees (65 %) produced 333 and 236 fruiting bodies, respectively, totalling 569 fruiting bodies (c. 30 kg). This study presents new information on factors influencing the onset of fruiting and the development of yields in a plantation of P. radiata mycorrhized by L. deliciosus. Projected yields as high as c. 300 kg/ha from the third year of production reiterate the feasibility of farming saffron milk cap in P. radiata plantations in New Zealand. Continued monitoring of this site and development of similar trials will provide important knowledge for the optimisation of yields in commercial saffron milk cap orchards.  相似文献

萌枝是许多木本植物维持种群稳定和延续的重要机制之一。本文通过对云南红豆杉人工林萌枝情况的调查,分析了云南红豆杉萌枝特征及其对生长的影响。结果表明:(1)云南红豆杉萌枝现象明显,萌枝率达到88.1%,萌枝类型有树基萌枝和树干萌枝两种,其中树基萌枝是最主要的类型,有树基萌枝的个体达到了总株数的80.0%,树干萌枝率仅为39.6%,约为树基萌枝率的一半,两种萌枝都有的比率为31.5%;(2)云南红豆杉的树基萌枝数量与树高呈正相关关系,与地径呈负相关关系,而树干萌枝数量与树高和地径都没有显著的相关关系。总萌枝数量与树高及地径的相关关系与树基萌枝的一样,但相关性略低。(3)树基萌枝和树干萌枝都会影响云南红豆杉枝叶的空间分布格局,但从植株总体上说,它们对云南红豆杉的枝叶生长量没有显著的影响。  相似文献
