AIMS: To determine the microbiological quality of washing-up water and the environment in domestic and commercial kitchens. METHODS AND RESULTS: Chicken meals were prepared by people without food safety training in their own kitchen (n = 52) or by trained staff in a commercial kitchen (n = 10). Study participants then washed-up, cleaned the kitchen and completed a food hygiene questionnaire. The temperature and microbiological quality of the washing-up water, and the presence of pathogens in dishcloths, tea towels and other kitchen samples was determined. Of the raw chickens used in meal preparation, 96 and 13% were naturally contaminated with Campylobacter or Salmonella spp., respectively. In domestic kitchens, two of 45 sponges, dishcloths or scourers and one of 32 hand- or tea towels were contaminated with Campylobacter after washing-up and cleaning but none of the tap or sink swabs yielded pathogens. The mean washing-up water temperature in the domestic kitchens was 40.7 degrees C, whereas in the commercial kitchen it was 44.7 degrees C (P = 0.04). Study participants who used hotter water (>/=40 degrees C) had lower levels of bacteria in their washing-up water. The aerobic plate counts of the washing-up water samples in domestic homes were usually between 105 and 106 CFU ml-1 but those associated with the commercial kitchen were consistently lower (P = 0.01). Despite this, Campylobacter was detected in one of 10 washing-up water samples from the commercial kitchen but in none of the samples from domestic kitchens. CONCLUSIONS: Pathogenic microorganisms can be recovered relatively frequently from the kitchen environment. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF STUDY: By identifying factors that affect the number of microorganisms in washing-up water and the kitchen environment, evidence-based recommendations on implementing domestic food hygiene can be made.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Bainiku-ekisu, a concentrate of Japanese apricot (Prunus mume) juice, is a traditional Japanese folk remedy for treatment of dyspepsia since more than a thousand years ago. Fujita et al. previously reported in vitro antibacterial effect of Bainiku-ekisu to Helicobacter pylori. We conducted an in vivo pilot study to evaluate the possibility that Bainiku-ekisu may have an antibacterial effect on H. pylori in the human stomach. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Consecutive 18 H. pylori-positive subjects were included. Approximately 130 mL 1% Bainiku-ekisu solution was ingested by the subjects twice a day for 12 weeks. Urea breath test (UBT) was performed before ingestion, and 2 and 12 weeks after starting ingestion of Bainiku-ekisu, and UBT values were compared. RESULTS: Bainiku-ekisu therapy resulted in a slight fall in UBT values after 2 weeks (from 30.1 +/- 6 to 23.5 +/- 6 in ITT analysis, p = .094; from 31.2 +/- 6 to 24.7 +/- 6 in PP analysis, p = .124) (data are shown with mean +/- SE). In two instances (11%), the UBT values became negative. Fourteen subjects completed the trial for 12 weeks and there was no significant change in UBT values (from 30.1 +/- 6 to 25.9 +/- 6 in ITT analysis, p = .450; from 35.6 +/- 6 to 31.4 +/- 7 in PP analysis, p = .555). CONCLUSION: Our results are consistent with the antibacterial effect of Bainiku-ekisu on H. pylori in the human stomach. However, the bacteria were not successfully eradicated with 2- or 12-week ingestion of a Bainiku-ekisu solution. Subsequent studies will need to identify a clinically useful regimen.  相似文献

AIM: To describe the relationship between antibiotic and antibacterial resistance in environmental and clinical bacteria from home environments across geographical locations, relative to the use or nonuse of antibacterial products, with a focus on target organisms recognized as potential human pathogens. METHODS AND RESULTS: In a randomized study, environmental and clinical samples were collected from the homes of antibacterial product users (n=30) and nonusers (n=30) for the isolation of target bacteria for antibiotic and antibacterial testing in three geographical areas (in USA and UK). Isolates were tested for antibiotic susceptibility, with selected antibiotic-resistant and antibiotic-susceptible isolates tested against four common antibacterial agents (triclosan, para-chloro-meta-xylenol, pine oil and quaternary ammonium compound). Prequalified users and nonusers at each location were randomly selected after meeting exclusionary criteria. Of 1238 isolates, more target bacteria were recovered from nonuser than user homes. Of Staphylococcus aureus isolates (n=33), none showed resistance to oxacillin or vancomycin; for Enterococcus sp. (n=149), none were resistant to ampicillin or vancomycin; and for Klebsiella pneumoniae (n=54)and Escherichia coli (n=24), none were resistant to third generation cephalosporins. Antibiotic resistance to one or more of the standard test panel drugs for Gram-positive and Gram-negative target bacteria was comparable between nonuser and user homes for both environmental and clinical isolates [e.g. resistance of environmental coagulase-negative (CN) Staphylococcus sp. was 73.8% (124/168) from nonuser homes and 73.0% (111/152) from user homes, and Enterobacteriaceae other than E. coli, 75.9% (186/245) from nonuser homes compared with 78.0% from user homes]. Of 524 Gram-negatives tested against preferred/alternative drugs, 97.1% (509/524) were susceptible to all antibiotics, across both groups. Isolates of S. aureus, Enterococcus sp. and CN Staphylococcus sp. susceptible to all preferred treatment drugs showed comparable antibacterial minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) results between nonuser and user home isolates. For Gram-positives resistant to one or more preferred drugs, greatest resistance to antibacterial active ingredients was found in the nonuser group. For Gram-negatives, the antibacterial MIC data were comparable for isolates that were fully susceptible and resistant to one or more preferred/alternative treatment antibiotics. CONCLUSIONS: The results showed a lack of antibiotic and antibacterial agent cross-resistance in target bacteria from the homes of antibacterial product users and nonusers, as well as increased prevalence of potential pathogens in nonuser homes. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: It refutes widely publicized, yet unsupported, hypotheses that use of antibacterial products facilitates the development of antibiotic resistance in bacteria from the home environment.  相似文献

AIM: To investigate the bacteriological quality, and the occurrence of selected pathogenic bacteria from organically grown Iceberg lettuce fertilized with bovine manure in the form of compost, firm manure and slurry in a 2-year field trial. METHODS AND RESULTS: Samples of soil, fertilizer, fertilized soil, seedlings and lettuce were analysed for aerobic plate counts (APC), thermotolerant coliform bacteria (TCB), Escherichia coli, E. coli O157:H7, Salmonella spp. and Listeria monocytogenes. No difference in bacteriological quality could be shown in lettuce at harvest, however, APC varied significantly from year to year in the study. The various treatments gave significantly different APC and numbers of TCB isolated from fertilized soil. Escherichia coli O157:H7 was isolated from firm manure and slurry, and soils fertilized with the respective fertilizers the second year, but were not recovered from the lettuce. CONCLUSIONS: No difference in bacteriological quality could be detected in lettuce at harvest after application of various types of manure-based fertilizers grown under Norwegian conditions. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The results may indicate that the use of manure does not have considerable influence on the bacteriological quality of organic lettuce. However, others have suggested that there is a risk by using manure. There is a need for more research in the field.  相似文献

STUDY OBJECTIVE--Comparison of four layer bandage system with traditional adhesive plaster bandaging in terms of (a) compression achieved and (b) healing of venous ulcers. DESIGN--Part of larger randomised trial of five different dressings. SETTING--Outpatient venous ulcer clinic in university hospital. PATIENTS--(a) Pressure exerted by both bandage systems was measured in the same 20 patients. (b) Healing with the four layer bandage was assessed in 148 legs in 126 consecutive patients (mean age 71 (SE 2); range 30-96) with chronic venous ulcers that had resisted treatment with traditional bandaging for a mean of 27.2 (SE 8) months. INTERVENTIONS--(a) Four layer bandage system or traditional adhesive plaster bandaging for pressure studies; (b) four layer bandaging applied weekly for studies of healing. END POINTS--(a) Comparison of pressures achieved at the ankle for up to one week; (b) complete healing within 12 weeks. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS--(a) Four layer bandage produced higher initial pressures at the ankle of 42.5 (SE 1) mm Hg compared with 29.8 (1.8) for the adhesive plaster (p less than 0.001; 95% confidence interval 18.5 to 6.9). Pressure was maintained for one week with the four layer bandage but fell to 10.4 (3.5) mm Hg at 24 hours with adhesive plaster bandaging. (b) After weekly bandaging with the four layer bandage 110 of 48 venous ulcers had healed completely within 12 (mean 6.3 (0.4)) weeks. CONCLUSION--Sustained compression of over 40 mm Hg achieved with a multilayer bandage results in rapid healing of chronic venous ulcers that have failed to heal in many months of compression at lower pressures with more conventional bandages.  相似文献

A study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of alternating bulls between a single and a multiple sire mating (MSM) program on the reproductive performance of suckled Zebu cows raised under range conditions in the humid tropics of Costa Rica. Multiparous Zebu cows (n=94) suckling calves were distributed between two experimental trials (A and B) consisting of 47 animals each. A single sire mating (SSM) system was alternated weekly with a MSM system with three bulls. This period lasted for 8 weeks. To facilitate estrous expression, four cows were strategically synchronized (estrus-stimulated) in alternate weeks. Courtship predominated over mounting under non-stimulated estrus, for each mounting performed an average of 6.0 and 6.3 courtship activities were recorded in the SSM and MSM, respectively. Under the influence of strategic synchronization corresponding values were 3.9 and 4.2 in the SSM and MSM, respectively (P>0.05). Blood samples for progesterone evaluation were taken twice weekly. All cows in trial A were in anestrus at the start of the study. By second week, 5 out of the 47 cows had initiated estrous cycles and by the third week six were pregnant. In contrast in trial B, 9 out of 47 had initiated estrous cycles before interacting with the bulls and on week 3, only two females had become pregnant and three had initiated estrous cycles. Significant differences were found in the cumulative percentage of cows pregnant between trials A and B (P<0.05). Even though these results occurred, the rotation of the bulls (one or three), or the type of cows (estrus-stimulated or not) did not influence the results in this study.  相似文献

AIMS: To characterize bacteriocin-like inhibitory substances (BLIS) from two dochi-isolated Enterococcus faecium. METHODS AND RESULTS: Enterococcus faecium D081821 and D081833 were isolated from dochi (a traditional fermented food in Taiwan) and found to produce BLIS with inhibitory activities against Listeria monocytogenes, Clostridium perfringens, and Bacillus cereus. Strains D081821 and D081833 showed different growth temperatures and their BLIS showed different sensitivities to heat, proteolytic enzymes, and antibacterial spectra. Both BLIS were collected, partially purified, and analysed by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). SDS-PAGE showed that both partially purified BLIS were approximately 3.0 kDa in size. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that E. faecium D081821 and D081833 produce different BLIS with strong antibacterial actions against the tested pathogenic bacteria. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The results of this study suggest that two different BLIS from dochi-isolated lactic acid bacteria have potential for use as food preservatives.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the safety and possible efficacy of IFN-beta-1a for the treatment of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Twenty-two patients with active RA were enrolled in a phase II randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 30 microg IFN-beta-1a by weekly self-injection for 24 weeks. The primary outcome of the study was safety. Secondary outcomes included the proportion of patients achieving an American College of Rheumatology (ACR) 20 response at 24 weeks. There were no significant differences in adverse events reported in the two groups. Fewer than 20% of patients in each arm of the study achieved an ACR 20 response at 24 weeks (P = 0.71). Sixty-nine percent of patients receiving IFN-beta and 67% receiving placebo terminated the study early, most of them secondary to a perceived lack of efficacy. Overall, IFN-beta-1a had a safety profile similar to that of placebo. There were no significant differences in the proportion of patients achieving an ACR 20 response between the two groups.  相似文献

AIMS: Identification of a new actinomycete strain Sg3, belonging to the genus Streptosporangium and partial characterization of the produced antibacterial activities. METHODS AND RESULTS: The strain Sg3 was isolated from an Algerian Saharan soil and identified by morphological, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic analyses to the genus Streptosporangium. The comparison of its physiological characteristics with those of known species of Streptosporangium showed significant differences with the nearest species Streptosporangium carneum. Analysis of the 16S rDNA sequence of strain Sg3 showed a similarity level ranging between 97% and 98.8% within Streptosporangium species, with S. carneum the most closely related. Strain Sg3 showed a red coloured antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria on several culture media. The purification of the red pigment by chromatographic methods led to the isolation of three active products. The (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), mass, infrared (IR) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) data of these molecules strongly suggested that they belonged to the quinone-anthracycline group with three or more rings. CONCLUSIONS: Strain Sg3 represents a distinct phyletic line suggesting a new genomic species. It produces antibacterial activities identified as quinone-anthracycline aromatics. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The quinone-anthracycline antibiotics are known for their antimicrobial and antineoplastic activities and are used in chemotherapy for the treatment of many cancer diseases. The present work constitutes the first stage of a whole series of studies to be realized on these antibiotics before arriving at a possible application.  相似文献

AIMS: The aim of the study was to assess the relationships between the remaining shelf-life (RSL) of cold-smoked salmon and various microbiological and physico-chemical parameters, using a multivariate data analysis in the form of stepwise forward multiple regression. METHODS AND RESULTS: Thirteen batches of French cold-smoked salmon were analysed weekly during vacuum-packed storage at 5 degrees C for their lipid, water, salt, phenol, pH, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVBN) and trimethylamine contents, total psychrotrophic count, lactic acid bacteria, lactobacilli, B. thermosphacta, Enterobacteriaceae and yeast counts. At the sensory rejection time, the flora was dominated by lactobacilli, lactobacilli/Enterobacteriaceae or Carnobacteria/B. thermosphacta. Shelf-life was very variable (1->6 weeks) and was related to the initial Enterobacteriaceae load (P < 0.05), depending on hygienic conditions in the smokehouse. High correlations existed between the RSL and lactobacilli count (P < 0.01), yeast count (P < 0.05) and TVBN concentration (P < 0.01). A polynomial fitting the RSL as a function of those three factors was proposed (R(2) = 0.80). Assuming that lactobacilli count could not exceed 109 cfu g-1, a minimum of 36 mg-N 100 g-1 was necessary for a product to be rejected, with a yeast count of 104 cfu g-1. CONCLUSION: Estimation of cold-smoked salmon quality is possible by measuring three parameters: lactobacilli and yeast counts and TVBN concentration. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The technical content is important for the smoked salmon industry and for development of quality standards for cold-smoked salmon.  相似文献

AIMS: To determine antibacterial activity in lactic acid bacteria (LAB) silage inoculants and in wheat and corn silages which were treated with these inoculants. METHODS AND RESULTS: Wheat and two corn silages were prepared in 0.25 l sealed glass jars. Inoculant treatments were prepared for each type of silage with each of 10 LAB silage inoculants at inoculation rate of 10(6) CFU g(-1). Untreated silages served as controls. Antibacterial activity was determined in the inoculants and in their respective silages with Micrococcus luteus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Antibacterial activity was detected in nine of the 10 inoculants whereas such activity in the silages varied. Control silages did not have antibacterial activity. CONCLUSIONS: Many LAB silage inoculants have antibacterial activity and in some cases this activity is imparted on inoculated silages. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study was conducted as part of a broader research objective, which is to find out how LAB silage inoculants enhance ruminant performance. The results of this study indicate that LAB silage inoculants produce antibacterial activity, and therefore, have a potential to inhibit detrimental micro-organisms in the silage or in the rumen.  相似文献

Activated protein C (APC) exerts its anticoagulant activity via proteolytic degradation of the heavy chains of activated factor VIII (FVIIIa) and activated factor V (FVa). So far, three APC cleavage sites have been identified in the heavy chain of FVa: Arg-306, Arg-506, and Arg-679. To obtain more insight in the structural and functional implications of each individual cleavage, recombinant factor V (rFV) mutants were constructed in which two or three of the APC cleavage sites were mutated. After expression in COS-1 cells, rFV mutants were purified, activated with thrombin, and inactivated by APC. During this study we observed that activated rFV-GQA (rFVa-GQA), in which the arginines at positions 306, 506, and 679 were replaced by glycine, glutamine, and alanine, respectively, was still inactivated by APC. Further analysis showed that the inactivation of rFVa-GQA by APC was phospholipid-dependent and sensitive to an inhibitory monoclonal antibody against protein C. Inactivation proceeded via a rapid phase (kx1=5.4 x 10(4) M(-1) s(-1)) and a slow phase (kx2=3.2 x 10(3) M(-1) s(-1)). Analysis of the inactivation curves showed that the rapid phase yielded a reaction intermediate that retained approximately 80% of the original FVa activity, whereas the slow cleavage resulted in formation of a completely inactive reaction product. Inactivation of rFVa-GQA was accelerated by protein S, most likely via stimulation of the slow phase. Immunoblot analysis using a monoclonal antibody recognizing an epitope between Arg-306 and Arg-506 indicated that during the rapid phase of inactivation a fragment of 80 kDa was generated that resulted from cleavage at a residue very close to Arg-506. The slow phase was associated with the formation of fragments resulting from cleavage at a residue 1.5-2 kDa carboxyl-terminal to Arg-306. Our observations may explain the unexpectedly mild APC resistance associated with mutations at Arg-306 (FV HongKong and FV Cambridge) in the heavy chain of FV.  相似文献

AIMS: To quantify the antibacterial properties of five essential oils (EO) on a non-toxigenic strain of Escherichia coli O157:H7 in the presence and absence of a stabilizer and an emulsifier and at three different temperatures. METHODS AND RESULTS: Five EOs known to exhibit antibacterial properties were screened by disc diffusion assay and the most active were selected for further study in microdilution colorimetric assays. Oregano (Origanum vulgare) and thyme (Thymus vulgaris; light and red varieties) EO had the strongest bacteriostatic and bactericidal properties, followed by bay (Pimenta racemosa) and clove bud (Eugenia caryophyllata synonym: Syzygium aromaticum) EO. Oregano oil was colicidal at 625 microl l(-1) at 10, 20 and 37 degrees C. The addition of 0.05% (w/v) agar as stabilizer reinforced the antibacterial properties, particularly at 10 degrees C, whereas 0.25% (w/v) lecithin reduced antibacterial activity. Scanning electron micrographs showed extensive morphological changes to treated cells. CONCLUSIONS: Oregano and thyme EO possess significant in vitro colicidal and colistatic properties, which are exhibited in a broad temperature range and substantially improved by the addition of agar as stabilizer. Bay and clove bud EO are less active. Lecithin diminished antibacterial properties. The bactericidal concentration of oregano EO irreversibly damaged E. coli O157:H7 cells within 1 min. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Oregano and light thyme EO, particularly when enhanced by agar stabilizer, may be effective in reducing the number or preventing the growth of E. coli O157:H7 in foods.  相似文献

The inactivation of factor Va is a complex process which includes bond cleavage (at three sites) and dissociation of the A2N.A2C peptides, with intermediate activity in each species. Quantitation of the functional consequences of each step in the reaction has allowed for understanding of the presentation of disease in individuals possessing the factor V polymorphism factor VLEIDEN. APC cleavage of membrane-bound bovine factor Va (Arg306, Arg505, Arg662) leads to the dissociation of fragments of the A2 domain, residues 307-713 (A2N.A2C + A2C-peptide), leaving behind the membrane-bound A1.LC species. Evaluation of the dissociation process by light scattering yields invariant mass loss estimates as a function of APC concentration. The rate constant for A2 fragment dissociation varies with [APC], reaching a maximal value of k = 0.028 s-1, the unimolecular rate constant for A2 domain fragment dissociation. The APC binding site resides in the factor Va light chain (LC) (Kd = 7 nM), suggesting that the membrane-bound LC.A1 product would act to sequester APC. This inhibitory interaction (LC.A1.APC) is demonstrated to exist with either purified factor Va LC or the products of factor Va inactivation. Utilizing these experimental data and the reported rates of bond cleavage, binding constants, and product activity values for factor Va partial inactivation products, a model is developed which describes factor Va inactivation and accounts for the defect in factor VLEIDEN. The model accurately predicts the rates of inactivation of factor Va and factor VaLEIDEN, and the effect of product inhibition. Modeled reaction progress diagrams and activity profiles (from either factor Va or factor VaLEIDEN) are coincident with experimentally derived data, providing a mechanistic and kinetic explanation for all steps in the inactivation of normal factor Va and the pathology associated with factor VLEIDEN.  相似文献

AIMS: To compare microbiological safety of yogurt, kefir and different combinations of yogurt and kefir samples by using three foodborne pathogenic strains (Escherichia coli O157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes 4b and Yersinia enterocolitica O3) as indicators. METHODS AND RESULTS: Fresh yogurt and kefir drinks were added to pasteurized milk at a 5% rate either separately or together, and then incubated at different temperatures (43 degrees C for yogurt and 30 degrees C for kefir), depending on appropriate growth temperature of their starter microflora. While traditional yogurt was found to be the least suppressive on the three pathogenic micro-organisms, samples obtained from two subsequent fermentation process (samples fermented at 43 degrees C for 3 h and at 30 degrees C for 21 h) were more suppressive than that of traditional kefir. There was no significant survival difference between E. coli O157:H7 and L. monocytogenes 4b in samples tested (P > 0.05), but Y. enterocolitica O3 was more susceptible than other two test strains (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The microbiological safety of the dairy product fermented at two consecutive periods was superior than that of traditional yogurt or kefir alone. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: These experiments may mimic what happens when yogurt and kefir starter micro-organisms are combined in a milk fermentation process with different time and temperature periods.  相似文献

AIMS: The aim of the study was to isolate and characterize the endophytic fungi from the rhizomes of the Chinese traditional medicinal plant Dioscorea zingiberensis and to detect their antibacterial activities. METHODS AND RESULTS: After strict sterile sample preparation, nine fungal endophytes were isolated from rhizomes of the Chinese traditional medicinal plant D. zingiberensis. The endophytes were classified by morphological traits and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rRNA gene sequence analysis. Their ITS rDNA sequences were 99-100% identical to Nectria, Fusarium, Rhizopycnis, Acremonium and Penicillium spp. respectively. Of these, the most frequent genera were Fusarium and Nectria. One isolate, Dzf7, was unclassified on the basis of its low sequence similarity. The next closest species was Alternaria longissima (c. 92.4% sequence similarity). Endophyte isolate Dzf5 showed the closest sequence similarity (c. 99.5%) to an uncultured soil fungus (DQ420800) obtained from Cedar Creek, USA. Bioassays using a modified broth dilution test were used to detect the antibacterial activity of n-butanol extracts of both mycelia and culture filtrates of D. zingiberensis showed biological activity against Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus haemolyticus, Escherichia coli and Xanthomonas vesicatoria. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of the extracts were between 31 x 25 microg ml(-1) and 125 microg ml(-1). CONCLUSIONS: Endophytic fungus Dzf2 (c. 99 x 8% sequence similarity to Fusarium redolens) isolated from D. zingiberensis rhizome showed the most potent antibacterial activities. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Endophytic fungi isolated from D. zingiberensis may be used as potential producers of antibacterial natural products.  相似文献

AIMS: The antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus of honey and propolis produced by Apis mellifera and Tetragonisca angustula was evaluated. Secondary aims included the study of the chemical composition of propolis and honey samples and its relationship with antibacterial activity against S. aureus. METHODS AND RESULTS: The antibacterial activity of honey and propolis was determined by the method of macrodilution. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MICs) of A. mellifera honey ranged from 126.23 to 185.70 mg ml(-1) and of T. angustula from 142.87 to 214.33 mg ml(-1). For propolis, the MIC ranged from 0.36 to 3.65 mg ml(-1) (A. mellifera) and from 0.44 to 2.01 mg ml(-1) (T. angustula). Honey and propolis were evaluated by high-performance liquid chromatography. Some typical compounds of Brazilian propolis were also identified in honey samples. Principal component analysis revealed that the chemical composition of honey and propolis samples was distinct based on the geographical location of the samples. CONCLUSIONS: Propolis samples had higher antibacterial activity against S. aureus when compared with honey. However, both propolis and honey samples had antibacterial against S. aureus. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: These antimicrobial properties would warrant further studies on the clinical applications of propolis and honey against S. aureus.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: An un-commissioned randomized, double-blinded, placebo controlled clinical study was planned using a deep sea fish oil product for pets. Seventy-seven client-owned dogs with osteoarthritis were randomly assigned to supplement the food with either the fish oil product or corn (=placebo) oil. Our main outcome variables were force platform variables Peak vertical Force (PVF) and impulse, the validated Helsinki Chronic Pain Index (HCPI) and the use of rescue NSAIDs. Secondary outcome variables were a locomotion visual analog scale (VAS), a Quality of life VAS, a comparative questionnaire, a veterinary assessment, owners' final assessment of outcome and guessing the product given. RESULTS: When comparing the two test groups at the end of the trial (16 weeks) there was no significant difference in any of the main outcome variables but owners of dogs that had taken fish oil were significantly happier with the treatment at the end visit and did significantly better at guessing what group their dogs had been in, compared to the placebo group. When comparing variables within the fish oil group as change from baseline to trial end, there were significant positive changes in PVF, HCPI, NSAID use, Quality of life VAS, as well as in all three scores in the comparative questionnaire (locomotion, every-day situations, and skin & coat). There were similar positive trends in force platform impulse and in the veterinary assessment variables, although they did not reach significance. Within the placebo group there were significant positive changes only in the HCPI and a significant deterioration according to veterinary assessment. CONCLUSIONS: When compared to placebo, there was not a major statistically significant benefit in using deep sea fish oil as a pain reliever in our study population of dogs suffering from osteoarthritis. However, the fish oil treated patients improved significantly in many of the variables, when comparing baseline values to the study-end values within the group, indicating a true but small relief in symptoms. Deep sea fish oil supplementation could be considered a part of the multimodal pain relieving approach currently recommended for dogs suffering from OA, especially for individuals that do not tolerate anti-inflammatory drugs.  相似文献

Maize grains contaminated with fumonisin, a metabolite of Fusarium verticillioides was incorporated into matured male rabbits’ diet to evaluate its effects on performance, haematology and serum biochemistry in rabbits. Thirty individually caged crossbred adult rabbit bucks averaging 1.36 ± 0.01 kg (about 22–24-week-old) were randomly allotted to three treatment diets comprising a control diet (containing 0.35 ± 0.02 mg fumonisin/kg) and two test diets containing 12.30 ± 0.16 and 24.56 ± 0.14 mg fumonisin/kg, constituting treatments 1 (low infection), 2 (medium infection) and 3 (high infection), respectively, in a five-week feeding trial. Results showed that the dry matter intake (DMI) (g/rabbit) at the end of the feeding trial was significantly (P < 0.05) influenced. The DMI declined with increasing dietary fumonisin by a significant 80% and 95% (P < 0.05) for high and medium levels of dietary fumonisin, respectively, relative to the mean weekly DMI of 609.93 ± 45.08 g by rabbits fed diet with low level of fumonisin. The weekly weight gain tended to decrease with increased dietary fumonisin levels, while the haematological and serum biochemical components examined, were not statistically influenced among the diets when fed to male rabbits for a period of 5 weeks. Target audience: Livestock farmers, Feed millers, and Animal nutritionists.  相似文献
