Biological monitoring of the Fly River system in Papua New Guinea has shown that floodplain habitats (oxbow lakes, blocked valley lakes and seasonally inundated grassed floodplain) support diverse and abundant populations of freshwater fishes. Since monitoring first commenced in the early 1980's, a total of 66 fish species representing 33 families has been sampled, with gillnets and rotenone, from a range of sites located on the floodplains of the Fly and Strickland rivers. The fish fauna was dominated by catfishes in the families Ariidae (11 species) and Plotosidae (7 species), with aquatic invertivores being the dominant feeding group. Herring species (Nematalosa spp.) were often very abundant in the oxbow lakes, forming 66% of the total catch in all the floodplain habitats. The fish communities in the oxbow lakes and blocked valley lakes were distinctly different, with several of the smaller fish species being more abundant in the blocked valley lakes, while the oxbow lakes supported more of the larger predatory species. Catches in the oxbow lakes were also generally higher and more diverse than the blocked valley lakes or grassed floodplain sites. Since the commencement of monitoring, catches from the floodplain sites have varied considerably, both spatially and temporally. Reduced catches seen at some sites are probably associated with natural climatic factors, particularly El Niño-induced droughts and algal blooms. Introduced species and increased commercial and artisanal fishing may also be affecting stocks of native fish. Fish populations were shown to recover only slowly in lakes affected by severe drought conditions, with extensive mats of floating grasses hindering fish recolonisation. Fish stocks in a lake affected by an algal bloom recovered more quickly than stocks in lakes affected by drought.  相似文献

Although both patch area and shape are key factors driving biodiversity in fragmented terrestrial landscapes, researchers have had limited and mixed success in documenting the effects of these two factors on aquatic ecosystems. Here we examined the effects of lake area and shape on macrophyte species richness in a lowland floodplain by considering the differences in lake types (i.e. marsh, oxbow, man-made lakes). We surveyed species richness of native macrophytes in 35 lakes including 11 marshes, 11 oxbows and 13 man-made lakes with various complex shapes covering from 0.25 to 46.3 ha. Model selection clearly supported the existence of interaction between area and shape effects: large-circular and small-complex lakes supported a higher macrophyte species richness, while it was lower in large-complex and small-circular lakes. Among the three lake types, marsh lakes were more circular and man-made lakes had more complex shapes, while oxbow lakes were intermediate between these two. Also, marsh lakes had positive species–area relationships, while man-made lakes had negative relationships. Our results suggest the opposing shape complexity and species–area relationships of these two contrasting lake types are the result of the interactions between lake area and shape. These results indicate that different lake types result in variations in their conservation value for preserving macrophyte diversity. We suggest that small complex-shaped patches (especially oxbow lakes), which are often given the lowest conservation priority in terrestrial ecosystems, cannot be disregarded when conserving macrophyte biodiversity in aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献

Fish introduction, eutrophication and disappearance of aquatic vegetation are important disturbances of aquatic ecosystems, especially in plateau lakes, which are generally considered to be very vulnerable. Fish were introduced to Lake Dianchi, a eutrophic plateau lake in southwest China, in the late 1950s and 1970s. After the introduction, invasive fish became the dominant species, and the total fish yield increased. Meanwhile, the trophic level of Lake Dianchi had a tendency to increase in the past decades because of the increases in human activities in the watershed area. In addition, the area of aquatic vegetation decreased from more than 90 to 1.8% of the lake area from the 1950s to 2000. This study investigated the effects of fish introduction, eutrophication and aquatic vegetation on the diatom community of Lake Dianchi by examining the changes of microfossil diatom assemblage and abundance. Results showed that the absolute abundance and diatom assemblages changed after fish were introduced. The endemic species, Cyclotella rohomboideo-elliptica, disappeared with the introduction of fish and increasing trophic levels after 1958. Fragilaria crotonensis entered into the lake with the introduction of fish and gradually thrived in the lake after 1958. Diatom species numbers also decreased gradually from 21 to 9 from the past to present. Epiphytic diatoms disappeared with the decrease of aquatic vegetation after 1985. Our study indicated that eutrophication was the most important process determining diatom abundance, and fish introduction was a secondary process determining diatom abundance, while aquatic vegetation had a more important role in structuring the diatom community in this eutrophic plateau lake.  相似文献

1. Shallow lakes in the Boreal Transition Zone (BTZ) in Alberta, Canada are naturally productive systems that provide important breeding and moulting habitat for many waterfowl (Anseriformes). To examine the relative importance of biotic and abiotic factors on waterfowl population densities, species richness and community composition, we surveyed 30 shallow lakes and evaluated the relationships among fish communities, lake characteristics and waterfowl in both breeding and moulting habitat. Shallow lakes were either fishless (n = 15), contained only small‐bodied fishes (n = 10) or contained large‐bodied, mostly predatory, fish in addition to small‐bodied fish (n = 5). 2. Environmental factors, including water colour, submerged aquatic vegetation, lake area and potassium, explained 24.3% of the variation in breeding waterfowl communities. Fish assemblage contributed independently to a small but significant proportion (13.4%) of the variation, while 13.8% of the explained variation was shared between environmental factors and fish assemblage. In total, 51.5% of the variation in breeding waterfowl communities was explained. 3. Overall, 55.5% of the total variation in moulting waterfowl communities was explained. Environment alone [especially total phosphorus, lake area, maximum depth and dissolved organic carbon (DOC)] and variation shared by fish and environment similarly accounted for most of the explained variation in moulting waterfowl communities (21.7% and 25.7% respectively), while fish assemblage was only one‐third as important (8.1%). 4. Both breeding and moulting waterfowl densities increased with lake productivity, even in eutrophic and hypereutrophic lakes. Breeding waterfowl density was also twice as great in fishless lakes than in lakes with fish, after accounting for lake area. 5. Certain waterfowl taxa were linked to fishless lakes, especially in the moulting season. Canvasback and moulting ring‐necked ducks were linked to small‐bodied fish lakes, whereas moulting common goldeneye were indicators of large‐bodied fish lakes. Knowledge of fish presence and species composition can therefore help guide conservation and management of waterfowl habitat in western Canada. Our results suggest that management efforts to maintain the most productive waterfowl habitat in the BTZ should focus on smaller, shallow, fishless lakes, particularly given that larger fish‐bearing systems have greater regulatory protection.  相似文献

Synopsis Fish species richness in 82 lakes in Ontario, Canada was significantly correlated with surface area. In this region, latitude explained only a small amount of the variation in fish species richness. Thus, our study provides a clear demonstration of the relation between fish species richness and lake area without the confounding effects of latitude and physiography inherent in analyses from broader geographic regions. By comparison with the species-area relationship obtained, we show that acidification clearly depressed the number of fish species in 66 acid-stressed lakes in Ontario. Fish species richness was also significantly correlated with both drainage and surface areas of 21 Ontario rivers. Slopes of species-area regressions of lakes and rivers did not differ significantly, suggesting that species are added to these habitats at similar rates. However, our regression analyses show that rivers support more species of fish per unit surface area of water. Although these results are consistent with some predictions of island biogeography theory, we suggest that fish species richness is more likely to be a simple function of habitat diversity, rather than an equilibrial balance between immigration and extinction.  相似文献

Fish introductions are considered one of the most widespread anthropogenic threats to aquatic ecosystems. Their negative impact on native amphibian communities has received increasing attention in recent years. We investigated the relationship between the introduced fish, emergent vegetation cover and native amphibians in man-made ponds generated by regulation and dam building along the Tarnava Mare Valley (Romania) during the last 40 years. We inventoried amphibians and fish inhabiting 85 permanent ponds and estimated habitat complexity focusing on emergent vegetation cover. Four amphibian species were found to be negatively associated with the presence of predatory fish. Species richness of ponds without fish and ponds without predatory fish did not differ significantly, whereas ponds containing only predatory fish had significantly lower amphibian richness. A significant positive relationship was found between the emergent vegetation cover and pond occupancy of six amphibian species and amphibian species richness. As a management recommendation, we suggest the restriction of fish introductions to non predatory fish and the maintenance of high emergent vegetation cover in the ponds. Handling editor: S. Fish Communities Associated with Macrophytes in Brazilian Floodplain Lakes   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The composition, diversity and similarity of fish communities associated with macrophytes of two oxbow lakes of Mogi-Guaçu River, São Paulo State, Brazil, were evaluated in the wet and dry seasons of 1994–1995. Fish species composition and relative abundance values were similar for both lakes, despite their difference in connection time to the river and the abundance of macrophytes. The fish communities were predominantly composed by small sized species typical of lentic environments (Characidae), juveniles of large non-migratory species (Erythrinidae and Gymnotidae) and a few juveniles of migratory species (Anostomidae and Curimatidae). These lakes are not characterized as nurseries for the young of migratory species and the zooplankton does not have an important role as food in the ontogenetic development of migratory species of fish.  相似文献

The architecture of aquatic macrophytes adds structural complexity to the littoral region. This increased habitat heterogeneity prompts greater diversity and stability of biotic communities. However, there are few studies that explore the ecological role of macrophytes in the Neotropical region. Then, the aim of this study was to determine spatial and diel influence of near-shore Eichhornia azurea stands on fish assemblage attributes and structure, in the Upper Paraná River floodplain, considering a meso-habitat scale. To achieve this objective, fish were trapped in four stands of macrophytes, in three positions (middle and border of the stand and open area) with samplings taken at different times of the day (6 h, 12 h and 18 h). A total of 537 fish of 16 species were caught. Dissolved oxygen varied significantly among positions. Fish assemblage attributes (species richness, evenness and Shannon Diversity Index) also varied among positions. Fish assemblage structure (summarized by a detrended correspondence analysis) and size structure were strongly influenced by times of the day and positions. The patterns observed can be explained by factors such as oxygen concentration, food resource availability and predation, all influenced by macrophytes. We suggest that any strategy to manage fish diversity and fish stocks has to consider aquatic macrophytes.  相似文献

1. Insects emerging from mountain lakes provide an important food source for many terrestrial predators. The amount of insect subsidy that emerges from lakes is influenced by predator composition, but predator effects could be ameliorated by greater habitat complexity. We conducted a replicated whole‐lake experiment to test the effects of introduced fish predators on the abundance and composition of aquatic insects within and emerging from the littoral zone of 16 mountain lakes in the Trinity Alps Wilderness in northwestern California. 2. Study treatments matched the fisheries management options being implemented in California’s wilderness areas: (i) continued stocking with non‐native trout, (ii) suspension of stocking, and (iii) suspension of stocking and removal of fish. We also included four naturally fishless ‘reference’ lakes. We compared abundances and biomass of emerging aquatic insects before treatments were initiated and for 3 years following their establishment. Abundances of benthic insects were also compared in the third year post‐treatment. 3. Trout removal rapidly increased abundances of mayflies, caddisflies, and insect predators, and overall insect biomass emerging from lakes. No significant differences were found between the suspension of stocking lakes and continued stocking lakes. Fish density was a more important predictor of aquatic insect emergence than habitat complexity. 4. Mayfly larvae responded positively to fish removal and caddisfly larvae tended to be more abundant in lakes without fish, but we did not detect effects on abundance of predatory insects. However, we found large insect predators in shallower water in lakes with fish compared to fish removal or fish‐free reference lakes. 5. These results provide insights into the continuing effects of past and current fish stocking practices on the flow of insect prey from mountain lakes into the neighbouring terrestrial environment. We also show that these consequences can rapidly be reversed by removing non‐native fishes.  相似文献

1. Community concordance measures the degree to which patterns in community structure in a set of sites are similar between two different taxonomic groups. Although seldom incorporated into studies of lake ecosystems, aquatic birds can be influenced by the same environmental features of lakes which affect fish and invertebrates, and can interact with these organisms directly as predators, competitors or prey. We surveyed lakes in north-central Alberta, Canada, to determine if co-occurring fish and aquatic bird assemblages displayed concordance, and assessed the relative importance of environmental and biotic factors in contributing to observed concordance.
2. In 41 lakes (3–305 ha), we encountered seven species of fish and thirty-one avian taxa which subsequently were used in multivariate analyses. Fish assemblages dominated by large piscivores were in large deep lakes, whereas fishless lakes and lakes with only small-bodied fish were small and shallow, and thus, prone to winter hypoxia. Bird assemblages displayed three general patterns: (a) small shallow lakes supported a 'core' of widespread species (between three and eight species per lake); (b) large, deep lakes supported more species (between 11 and 16), including large, aerially foraging piscivores; and (c) large, shallow lakes supported the most species (between 15 and 23), including many ducks.
3. Randomization tests of matrix concordance and Mantel tests both showed that fish and bird assemblages were significantly concordant. Concordance reflected the fact that both groups were strongly affected by the same key environmental factors, principally lake size and maximum depth, and to a lesser extent, productivity and geographic isolation. Direct interactions between birds and fish, such as predation and competition, appeared to play much smaller roles in shaping the two assemblages.  相似文献

Gravel pit lakes are novel ecosystems that can be colonized by fish through natural or anthropogenic pathways. In central Europe, many of them are managed by recreational anglers and thus experience regular fish stocking. However, also unmanaged gravel pits may be affected by stocking, either through illegal fish introductions or, occasionally, by immigration from connected water bodies. We sampled 23 small (< 20 ha) gravel pit lakes (16 managed and 7 unmanaged) in north-western Germany using littoral electrofishing and multimesh gillnets. Our objective was to compare the fish biodiversity in gravel pit lakes in the presence or absence of recreational fisheries. Given the size of the sampled lakes, we expected species poor communities and elevated fish diversity in the managed systems due to regular stocking of game fish species. Our study lakes were primarily mesotrophic and did not differ in key abiotic and biotic environmental characteristics. Lakes of both management types hosted similar fish abundances and biomasses, but were substantially different in terms of fish community structure and species richness. Fish were present in all lakes, with a minimum of three species. Higher α-diversity and lower β-diversity was discovered in managed gravel pit lakes compared to unmanaged lakes. Consequently, recreational-fisheries management fostered homogenization of fish communities, by stocking a similar set of fish species desired by anglers such as piscivorous fish and large bodied cyprinids. However, unmanaged gravel pit lakes were also affected by human-mediated colonization, presumably by illegal fish releases. Hardly any non-native species were detected, suggesting that recreational-fisheries management did not foster the spread of exotic species in our study region.  相似文献

Freshwater fishes are vulnerable to changes in water quality, physical habitat and connectivity resulting from drought, particularly in regulated rivers. When adequate river flows return, the recovery of populations might depend on the duration and consequences of drought. Rivers of the highly regulated Murray–Darling Basin in south-eastern Australia terminate at two large, shallow lakes that are separated from the estuary by tidal barrages. Over-abstraction of water and widespread prolonged drought (1997–2010) placed the lakes under severe environmental stress, culminating in critical water level recession from 2007 to 2010. Concurrently, most freshwater fish populations collapsed. We investigate shifts in fish assemblages resulting from habitat inundation in the lakes following the drought. The inundation and re-connection of the lakes and fringing habitats led to a substantial reduction of salinity throughout the region, and aquatic vegetation shifted from salt-tolerant to freshwater species. Fish assemblages became increasingly characterized by common freshwater taxa (ecological generalists), including high proportions of alien species. There were no indications of population recovery for three threatened species. The findings emphasize that short-lived fishes with specialized habitat requirements are vulnerable to severe population declines during prolonged drought in regulated rivers, which might restrict their recovery when adequate flows return.  相似文献

The Holocene evolution of eight South African coastal lakes and lagoons is examined and related to changes in fish composition over that period. Historical and current connectivity with riverine and marine environments are the primary determinants of present‐day fish assemblages in these systems. A small and remarkably consistent group of relict estuarine species have persisted in these coastal lakes and lagoons. The loss or reduction of connectivity with the sea has impacted on the diversity of marine fishes in all eight study systems, with no marine fishes occurring in those water bodies where connectivity has been completely broken (e.g. Sibaya, Groenvlei). In systems that have retained tenuous linkages with the sea (e.g., Verlorenvlei, Wilderness lakes), elements of the marine fish assemblage have persisted, especially the presence of facultative catadromous species. Freshwater fish diversity in coastal lakes and lagoons is a function of historical and present biogeography and salinity. From a freshwater biogeography perspective, the inflowing rivers of the four temperate systems reviewed here contain three or fewer native freshwater fishes, while the subtropical lakes that are fed by river systems contain up to 40 freshwater fish species. Thus, the significantly higher fish species diversity in subtropical versus temperate coastal lakes and lagoons comes as no surprise. Fish species diversity has been increased further in some systems (e.g., Groenvlei) by alien fish introductions. However, the impacts of fish introductions and translocations have not been studied in the coastal lakes and lagoons of South Africa. In these closed systems, it is probable that predation impacts on small estuarine fishes are significant. The recent alien fish introductions is an example of the growing threats to these systems during the Anthropocene, a period when human activities have had significant negative impacts and show potential to match the changes recorded during the entire Holocene.  相似文献

We studied spatial and temporal patterns in fish species composition and diversity at the upper Juruá River located in the west Brazilian Amazon. We collected with gillnet 822 fishes belonging to 90 species in the main Juruá River, its tributaries and the floodplain lakes during wet and dry seasons. Fish abundance and species richness were greater in the dry season. During that season, fishes may be concentrated due to the low water level, being caught more easily by gillnets. There has been a trend towards a greater fish biomass caught in lakes. This might be associated with a greater environmental stability as lakes may be less subject to large variations in water level. The fish communities differed between the two seasons and between lakes and the lotic environments (main river and tributaries). Fish species from the family Curimatidae were most abundant in the lakes, while Pimelodus spp. and Hypostomus spp. predominated in the main Juruá River. Seasonal variations in fish communities may be related to differences in the migratory behavior among fish species. Such spatial and temporal patterns influencing fish community structure at the Upper Juruá Extractive Reserve must be accounted for in management and conservation strategies.  相似文献

Changes in fish distribution are being observed across the globe. In Europe's Common Fisheries Policy, the share of the catch of each fish stock is split among management areas using a fixed allocation key known as ‘Relative Stability’: in each management area, member states get the same proportion of the total catch each year. That proportion is largely based on catches made by those member states in the 1970s. Changes in distribution can, therefore, result in a mismatch between quota shares and regional abundances within management areas, with potential repercussions for the status of fish stocks and the fisheries that depend on them. Assessing distribution changes is crucial to ensure adequate management and sustainable exploitation of our fish resources. We analysed scientific survey data using a three-tiered analytical approach to provide, for the first time, an overview of changes in distribution for 19 northeast Atlantic fish species encompassing 73 commercial stocks over 30 yr. All species have experienced changes in distribution, five of which did so across management areas. A cross-species analysis suggested that shifts in areas of suitable thermal habitat, and density-dependent use of these areas, are at least partly responsible for the observed changes. These findings challenge the current use of relative stability to allocate quotas.  相似文献

The major classes of tropical lakes include shallow, lowland lakes; deep, tertiary lakes; high altitudinal lakes; rainforests lakes; and man-made lakes at all latitudes and altitudes. Basic ecological processes are similar in temperate and tropical lakes, including grazing, competition, predation and abiotic adaptation. Small tropical lakes of intermediate age are probably not biotically more complicated than similar-sized temperate lakes. The structure of the areas of adaptative radiation and the dispersal ability of the species are important for the present distribution of taxa. Fish play a key role in the tropics since many species both consume zooplankton and compete with them for algal and pelagic sestonic food. This important co-evolution between fish and algae, leaving a fraction of the algal community with a predation refuge, may have decreased the ability of zooplankton to exploit algae. In addition, heavy predation from juvenile and adult fish may greatly simplify the zooplankton community, and have resulted in the scarcity of Cladocera, notably the efficient filter-feeder Daphnia. Little is known of possible physiological constraints to cladoceran distribution, however. Thus similar co-evolution as hypothesized between fish and algae seems not to have occurred to such a great extent between fish and zooplankton. Diurnal patterns in habitat selection of fish may also influence nutrient re-distribution in the tropics as in many temperate lakes. Serious environmental problems threaten tropical lakes, including eutrophication, clear-cutting of the rain forest, unwise introduction of new species not adapted to prevailing conditions, overfishing, extensive use of biocids, and probably acidic rain in areas with poorly buffered waters. Important processes in tropical lakes could be elucidated by concentrating research upon the fate of phytoplankton successional production, involving competition, grazing, sinking, fungi and bacterial attack. Co-evolution of fish and algae should be further investigated as it could in part explain the general scarcity and simplicity of the zooplankton community. Limnocorral experiments should also be used for further assessing processes in tropical lakes.  相似文献

Freshwater fishery management is treated as a dynamic system comprising environment protection and improvement, fishing, fishery resources allocation, fish stocking programs and marketing policy. The aims of the plan are to increase the economic value of the catch and to protect the professional fishery. Fisheries statistics, catch per unit effort data and other material were collected during 1972–1976. The total allowable catch (TAC) for the most important fish species was estimated with MSY and population analysis models. The results of fish stockings were studied by tagging and population analysis calculations. Fishing of vendace and non-valuable species (perch, roach, smelt) can be increased, but the fishing pressure on other species should not be raised above the present level. Restrictions on whitefish fishing are needed in some areas. A balanced multispecies fishery is desirable, and suggestions are given for the composition of the fishing gear. Fish stocking can make possible a larger and more valuable catch, but at present its profitability is rather low. The stocking results are strongly affected by the fishery and the gear composition.  相似文献
