Climate change is predicted to dramatically change hydrologic processes across Alaska, but estimates of how these impacts will influence specific watersheds and aquatic species are lacking. Here, we linked climate, hydrology, and habitat models within a coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) population model to assess how projected climate change could affect survival at each freshwater life stage and, in turn, production of coho salmon smolts in three subwatersheds of the Chuitna (Chuit) River watershed, Alaska. Based on future climate scenarios and projections from a three‐dimensional hydrology model, we simulated coho smolt production over a 20‐year span at the end of the century (2080–2100). The direction (i.e., positive vs. negative) and magnitude of changes in smolt production varied substantially by climate scenario and subwatershed. Projected smolt production decreased in all three subwatersheds under the minimum air temperature and maximum precipitation scenario due to elevated peak flows and a resulting 98% reduction in egg‐to‐fry survival. In contrast, the maximum air temperature and minimum precipitation scenario led to an increase in smolt production in all three subwatersheds through an increase in fry survival. Other climate change scenarios led to mixed responses, with projected smolt production increasing and decreasing in different subwatersheds. Our analysis highlights the complexity inherent in predicting climate‐change‐related impacts to salmon populations and demonstrates that population effects may depend on interactions between the relative magnitude of hydrologic and thermal changes and their interactions with features of the local habitat.  相似文献

Summary The retinal projections inEsox niger, as determined with the aid of a modified cobalt-lysine method, are considerably more extensive in the diencephalon and pretectum than in other teleost fishes so far examined. Although most retinal axons terminate contralaterally, rare fibers can be traced to the same aggregates ipsilaterally. The retinohypothalamic projection appears larger than hitherto reported in teleosts, and the dorsomedial optic tract issues fibers to a series of cell clusters extending from the rostral thalamus to mid-torus levels. A retinal projection to a presumed ventrolateral optic nucleus (VLO) is described for the first time in a teleost. Other targets of retinal fibers include the nucleus geniculatus lateralis ipse of Meader (GLI), the pretectal nucleus (P), the cortical nucleus and a well-developed ventromedial optic nucleus (VMO). The projection to the optic tectum is principally to the stratum fibrosum et griseum superficiale (SFGS) and stratum marginale (SM), but a considerable number of axons also course through the stratum album centrale (SAC) before terminating there or piercing the stratum griseum centrale (SGC) and terminating in SFGS. Rare terminal arborizations of retinal fibers were also observed in stratum griseum centrale (SGS) and in the stratum griseum periventriculare (SGC) in restricted portions of the tectum. Because of the relatively large size of the visual structures inE. niger it is a potentially useful model for future experimental studies on the visual system.  相似文献

Effects of temperature on Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) were analysed using Carlin tag recovery data (1985–2014), and mixed-stock catch data (smolt years from 2001 to 2012) in northern parts of the Baltic Sea. During warmer summers, the mean smolt length of the recaptured salmon tended to be smaller, and salmon were recaptured more frequently in feeding grounds closer to the home rivers in the Gulf of Bothnia, while colder summers were associated with more recaptures further south, in the Baltic Main Basin. Moreover, a warmer spring in the smolt year was associated with decreased weight of male grilses in mixed stock data. Further, warmer spring temperatures during the smolt year were associated with a higher proportion of one-sea-winter (1SW) males during the return migration in mixed stock data. These results suggest that the increasing global temperature may affect Atlantic salmon life history demographics.  相似文献

A model that explains 48% of the annual variation in Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolt production in the River Orkla, Norway, has been established. This variation could be explained by egg deposition, minimum daily discharge during the previous winter and minimum weekly discharge during the summer 3 years before smolt migration. All coefficients in the model were positive, which indicates that more eggs and higher minimum discharge levels during the winter before smolt migration and the summer after hatching benefit smolt production. Hence, when the spawning target of the river is reached, the minimum levels of river discharge, in both winter and summer, are the main bottlenecks for the parr survival, and hence for smolt production. The River Orkla was developed for hydropower production in the early 1980s by the construction of four reservoirs upstream of the river stretch accessible to S. salar. Although no water has been removed from the catchment, the dynamics of water flow has been altered, mainly by increasing discharges during winter and reducing spring floods. In spite of the higher than natural winter discharges, minimum winter discharge is still a determinant of smolt production. Hence, in regulated rivers, the maintenance of discharges to ensure that they are as high as possible during dry periods is an important means of securing high S. salar smolt production.  相似文献

Summary The retinal projections were studied in the black piranah (Serrasalmus niger) with degeneration and autoradiographic methods. The projections are bilateral to the hypothalamic optic nucleus, the dorsomedial optic nucleus, corpus geniculatum ipsum of Meader (1934) and the optic tectum. Unilateral, crossed projections were traced to the pretectal nucleus and the cortical nucleus. The visual system of the black piranah is exceptionally well developed but has retained many primitive features including the extensive bilateral projections.  相似文献

The survival of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar in the Baltic Sea was examined in relation to smolt traits (length and origin) and annual environmental factors [sea surface temperature (SST) and seasonal North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index], and prey fish abundance (herring Clupea harengus and sprat Sprattus sprattus) in the main basin and the southern Gulf of Bothnia. The study was based on recapture data for Carlin‐tagged hatchery‐reared and wild smolts from the Simojoki, a river flowing into the northern Gulf of Bothnia. The survival of the wild and reared groups was analysed using an ANOVA model and a stepwise regression model, with the arcsin‐transformed proportion of recaptured fish as the response variable. The results demonstrated a combined influence of smolt traits and environmental factors on survival. For the reared Atlantic salmon released in 1986–1998 (28 groups), the increasing annual mean SST in July in the southern Gulf of Bothnia and increasing mean smolt size improved survival. If the SST in July was excluded from the model, the NAO index in May to July also had a positive effect on survival (P < 0·10). The log10‐transformed abundance of 0+ year herring in the southern Gulf of Bothnia entered the model (P < 0·15) if the SST and NAO index were excluded. For the wild Atlantic salmon released in 1972–1993 (21 groups), only the increasing SST in July showed a significant association with improved survival (P = 0·004). Prey fish abundance in the main basin of the Baltic Sea had no influence on the survival of reared or wild smolt groups. The interaction between smolt size and the SST in July was not significant. The origin was a better, but not a significant, predictor of marine survival compared to the smolt size or the SST in July. The mean recapture rate of the wild groups was twice that of the reared groups in the whole data. The results suggest that cold summers in the Gulf of Bothnia reduce the survival of young Atlantic salmon in both wild and reared groups. The larger smolt size of the reared groups compared with the wild groups to some extent compensated for their lower ability to live in the wild.  相似文献

We investigated the influence of variation in body size and growth rate on age of smolting in Atlantic salmon and brown trout in four different Norwegian rivers. In Atlantic salmon smolt ages varied between 2 and 6 years, and in brown trout between 2 and 7 years. Smolt age was negatively correlated with parr growth, and positively correlated with smolt size. Age at smolting was more variable in the two northern than the two southern rivers. Smolt sizes and ages were also more variable in brown trout than in Atlantic salmon. Based on the observed variation in smolt size and age, we reject the hypothesis that a threshold size alone regulates age at smolting. Within populations smolt age depends on growth rate so that fast-growing parr smolted younger and smaller than slow-growing parr. We hypothesize that smolt size and age is a trade-off between expected benefits and costs imposed by differences in individual growth rate.  相似文献

Substantial declines of Pacific salmon populations have occurred over the past several decades related to large‐scale anthropogenic and climatic changes in freshwater and marine environments. In the Columbia River Basin, migrating juvenile salmonids may pass as many as eight large‐scale hydropower projects before reaching the ocean; however, the cumulative effects of multiple dam passages are largely unknown. Using acoustic transmitters and an extensive system of hydrophone arrays in the Lower Columbia River, we calculated the survival of yearling Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and steelhead (O. mykiss) passing one, two, or three dams. We applied a unique index of biological characteristics and environmental exposures, experienced by each fish individually as it migrated downstream, in order to examine which factors most influence salmonid survival. High outflow volumes led to involuntary spill in 2011 and created an environment of supersaturated dissolved gas concentrations. In this environment, migrating smolt survival was strongly influenced by barometric pressure, fish velocity, and water temperature. The effect of these variables on survival was compounded by multiple dam passages compared to fish passing a single dam. Despite spatial isolation between dams in the Lower Columbia River hydrosystem, migrating smolt appear to experience cumulative effects akin to a press disturbance. In general, Chinook salmon and steelhead respond similarly in terms of survival rates and responses to altered environmental conditions. Management actions that limit dissolved gas concentrations in years of high flow will benefit migrating salmonids at this life stage.  相似文献

Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis reveals similar differences between the retinal-specific lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) isozymes of the salmon (Salmo salar L.) and the sea-trout (Salmo trutta forma trutta L.) as those previously described for the salmon and the brown trout (Salmo trutta L.). F1 salmon × sea-trout hybrids give a classic hybrid isozyme pattern, but the F2 hybrids all possess the parental sea-trout type pattern. Loss of part of the salmon genome in these latter hybrids is the most likely explanation. It was observed that when the individual eye isozymes of the salmon, the sea-trout, and the rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri Richardson) were eluted from preparative polyacrylamide gels and re-electrophoresed, an apparent interconversion of certain isozyme bands occurred. This phenomenon was also evident using starch gel. However, the major cathodally migrating isozyme in each case (presumably the E4 isozyme) re-electrophoresed pure. The reasons for these interconversions are, as yet, unclear. Attempts to produce in vitro hybridization between the various isolated individual isozymes were unsuccessful. Km pyruvate values for the different salmon isozymes were of the order expected from results already published for other teleosts.  相似文献

Stomach content analyses were conducted on Atlantic salmon Salmo salar post‐smolt (average size, 119–154 mm fork length, L F) caught in eight large Norwegian fjord systems along a north–south geographical axis during 1998–2001. In general, post‐smolts from southern Norway showed low feeding intensity in the fjords, whereas extensive feeding was observed in fjords in the northern and middle parts of Norway. The marine diet mainly included different crustaceans and in particular marine pelagic fish larvae (sand-eels Ammodytes spp., herring Clupea harengus and gadoids), but with a substantial spatial and annual variation in prey diversity and feeding intensity. Insects were most frequently taken in the estuary, although fishes often made a large contribution in mass. In contrast, fishes, and to some extent various crustaceans (particularly Hyperiidae, Gammaridae, Euphausiacea and Copepoda) dominated the diet in the middle and outer parts of the fjords, where post‐smolts also fed more extensively than in the inner part. The results indicate that extensive feeding immediately after sea entrance may be more common for post‐smolts in the northern and middle parts of Norway, than in the southern fjords. The observed differences in post‐smolt feeding may be due to spatial and temporal differences in prey availability within and between the different types of fjord systems, and this might influence post‐smolt growth and survival.  相似文献

An enhancement programme based on stocking 0+ year age‐class Atlantic salmon Salmo salar, conducted in the River Bush, Northern Ireland, U.K. over the period 1996–2005, was reviewed with reference to the performance and biological characteristics of wild fish. Wild ova to 0+ year fry (summer) survival was c. 8% with subsequent wild 0+ year fry‐to‐smolt survival c. 9%. Stocked unfed 0+ year juveniles gave c. 1% survival to smolt whilst fed 0+ year S. salar stocked in late summer exhibited survival at c. 5%. Stocking with unfed and fed fry contributed to increased smolt production and helped attain local management objectives between 2001 and 2005. Significant differences in biological characteristics were observed between wild and stocked‐origin fish. Wild‐smolt cohorts were dominated by 2+ year age‐class fish on the River Bush whilst smolts originating from fed fry mostly comprised younger 1+ year individuals. The mean mass of 1+ year smolts derived from stocked fed fry was significantly lower than that of wild 1+ year smolts, although these differences were not evident between older age classes. Differences in run timing between wild smolts and smolts derived from stocked fry were also apparent with the stocked‐origin fish tending to run earlier than wild fish. Although the stocking exercise was useful in terms of maximizing freshwater production, concerns over the quality of stocked‐origin recruits and the long term consequences for productivity are highlighted.  相似文献

The distribution of cells that express three prepro-gonadotropin-releasing hormones (GnRH), corresponding to salmon GnRH, sea bream GnRH (sbGnRH), and chicken II GnRH, was studied in the brain and pituitary of the South American cichlid fish, Cichlasoma dimerus. Although the ontogeny and distribution of GnRH neuronal systems have previously been examined immunohistochemically with antibodies and antisera against the various GnRH decapeptides, we have used antisera against various perciform GnRH-associated peptides (GAPs) and riboprobes to various perciform GnRH+GAPs. The results demonstrate that: (1) the GnRH neuronal populations in the forebrain (salmon and sea bream GAPs; sGAP and sbGAP, respectively) show an overlapping pattern along the olfactory bulbs, nucleus olfacto-retinalis, ventral telencephalon, and preoptic area; (2) projections with sGAP are mainly located in the forebrain and contribute to the pituitary innervation, with projections containing chicken GAP II being mainly distributed along the mid and hindbrain and not contributing to pituitary innervation, whereas sbGAP projections are restricted to the ventral forebrain, being the most important molecular form in relation to pituitary innervation; (3) sbGnRH (GnRH I) neurons have an olfactory origin; (4) GAP antibodies and GAP riboprobes are valuable tools for the study of various GnRH systems, by avoiding the cross-reactivity problems that occur when using GnRH antibodies and GnRH riboprobes alone.This work was supported by grants UBACYT X-217, Conicet PIP 0539/R188; NIH-HD-29186 and Fogarty International Fellowship TW00086.  相似文献

Summary In coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch), smolt transformation has been shown to be associated with sequential surges of neurotransmitters in the brain. In order to determine if the surge of serotonin (5-HT) is correlated with structural changes, we have used immunocytochemistry to observe changes in the serotonin immunoreactivity before, during and after the 5-HT surge. The following stages were studied: 12-month-old freshwater presmolts, 17-month-old freshwater presmolts, 18-month-old saltwater smolts, 19-month-old saltwater postsmolt, 24-month-old postsmolt, and adult spawners. In the 17-month-old samples, but not at any other stage, we found a set of transient (serotonin-immunoreactive) 5-HT-immunoreactive neurons in the lateral preoptic area, as well as a discrete population of 5-HT-immunoreactive neurons in the lateral part of the dorsal right habenular nucleus. In addition, a higher density of serotonergic fibers was found in the telencephalon at this stage compared to the following two stages. Since the transient 5-HT-immunoreactive structures presented here do not appear simultaneously with the 5-HT total brain concentration surge, we conclude that they are unlikely to be the source of the 5-HT surge, but are probably related to other developmental changes in the brain associated with smolt transformation.  相似文献

The downstream migration of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salarL.) and sea trout smolt (S. trutta L.) was investigated using radio telemetry in the spring of 1999 and 2000. Forty wild sea trout smolts, 20 F1 sea trout smolts, 20 hatchery salmon smolts and 20 salmon smolts from river stockings were radio tagged and released in the Danish River Lilleaa. The downstream migration of the different groups of fish was monitored by manual tracking and by three automatic listening stations. The downstream migration of radio tagged smolts of both species occurred concurrently with their untagged counterparts. The diel migration pattern of the radio tagged smolts was predominantly nocturnal in both species. Wild sea trout smolt migrated significantly faster than both the F1 trout and the introduced salmon. There was no correlation between net ground speed, gill Na+,K+-ATPase activity or fish length in any of the different groups. The migration speed of wild sea trout smolts was positively correlated with water discharge in both years. In F1 sea trout smolts, migration speed was positively correlated with temperature in 1999. The migration speed of salmon smolts did not correlate to any of the investigated parameters.  相似文献

Summary Primary olfactory projections in king salmon fry, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, were studied with the cobaltlysine technique and after sectioning the entire head in a frozen state. The labeled axons can be traced from the olfactory epithelium, where cobalt was applied, into the olfactory bulb and to the ventral and lateral regions of the ventral telencephalon. The latter projection has not previously been reported, and may in actuality represent a transneuronal transport of cobalt. The terminations in the glomerular layer and in the external cellular layer of the bulb appear to be distributed differently in different parts of the bulb, suggesting regional specializations. A few neurons in the bulb were also always labeled suggesting that they may project to the olfactory epithelium.  相似文献

(Department of Zoology, University of Stockholm, Sweden.) — Acta zool. (Stockh.) 61(2): 117–125. Only one GTH cell type was identified in the pars distalis of the parr, smolt and precocious parr male. On a fine structural basis four phases with transitional forms of the GTH cell were recognized. In parr and smolt the GTH cells have numerous secretory granules and their cytology substantiate that they are in a storing phase with a possibly low release rate. On the contrary, in the precocious parr male all phases of the GTH cell are present. The great number of active cells and frequent degranulation and vacuolization indicate a high activity and release level.  相似文献

Around 30% of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolts successfully survived passage through Loch Meig, a reservoir in the north of Scotland, en route to the sea. However, this survival rate was in turn dependent on the timing of migration, with the earliest migrants in the spring having the best chance of survival. This could have implication for fisheries management, since the estimation of smolt downstream survival may be influenced by which time period of the smolt run is analysed.  相似文献

The Atlantic salmon has a complex life-cycle in which it encounters a salinity barrier initially upon migration to the sea as a young smolt and later as an adult salmon returning to its natal river. Concurrent with seawater migration is a process termed smoltification which is a series of metabolic changes which transform the freshwater parr into smolts adapted for life in the marine environment. To gain an understanding of events occurring at the molecular level in the salmon liver during this developmental process, a cDNA library prepared from post-smolt salmon liver mRNA was screened with total liver cDNA probes synthesised from parr and smolts. Clones which hybridised more strongly to the smolt probe than the parr probe were chosen as candidates, for an analysis of liver gene expression implicated in seawater adaptation. Many of these cDNA clones encoded the iron binding protein transferrin. Transferrin mRNA levels were determined to be significantly higher in seawater smolt salmon than in freshwater smolts implying that transferrin may play a role in seawater adaptation.  相似文献

Salmon ( Salmo salar ) formed the largest proportion by mass offish found in the stomachs of red-breasted mergansers ( Mergus serrator ) shot during the smolt run in north-east Scotland. Salmon parr represented approximately two-thirds by mass of juvenile salmon eaten, whilst smolts were present in a smaller proportion than previously predicted. The median lengths of parr and smolts eaten were 70 and 115 mm, respectively; the latter being significantly smaller than the smolt population sampled during annual production estimates on the river.  相似文献
