Examination of material obtained from the Urdaibai estuary (North Spain) during a 2 year phytoplankton sampling programme revealed a rare species of the genus Chaetoceros, C. salsugineus Takano. The morphology of this small (4·0×5·5?µm) member of the subgenus Hyalochaetae has been described using both light and electron microscopy. Regarding the original material, two new features have been observed: longer chains up to 24 cells and a new type of aperture, bisected by the fusion of central protuberances of adjacent valves. This bloom-forming diatom reached high densities in the poly-euhaline zone of the estuary closely related with high temperatures, denoting its neritic and summer preferences. Maximal cell densities (106–107 cells l?1) were reached in August and September when the water column was completely mixed and the salinity and temperature were about 31 psu and 20°C, respectively. This is the first report of C. salsugineus in Europe and contributes to the knowledge of the morphological and ecological features of this species. Relationships with other small species of the subgenus Hyalochaetae are also discussed.  相似文献

Species of Chaetoceros with less than four setae per cell are not common. In this study, five different taxa presenting this characteristic were found in the Sontecomapan lagoon, Mexico, a small tropical coastal lagoon on the Gulf of Mexico:Chaetoceros minimus, C. subtilis var. abnormis f. abnormis, C. subtilis var. abnormis f. simplex, C. throndsenii var. throndsenia, and C. thondsenii var. trisetosa. Using an electron microscope to make observations of C. subtilis var. abnormis f. simplex made evident the absence of rimoportulae suggesting a close relationship to C. minimus. According to our observations, we believe that the reduction in the number of setae in Chaetoceros is related to solitary forms. The five species studied here are associated with quiet brackish-water enclosed environments and can be considered worldwide-distributed organisms.  相似文献

Two planktonic species of diatoms, Chaetoceros bacteriastroides and C.seychellarus, have been studied by light and electron microscopy. Important features that may be used as taxonomic characters are described. A new subgenus, Bacteriastroidea, is proposed to include C. Bacteriastroides, because of its unique characteristics within the genus. The taxon is considered to be a link between the genera Bacteristrum and Chaetoceros. Morphological and taxonomic affinities between C.seychellarus and other related species of Chaetoceros subgenus Chaetoceros section Borealia, art noted, and a phylogenetic sequence is suggested. Some general evolutionary tendencies are discussed. The known distribution of C. Bacteriastroides and C.seychellarus is revised: both species are restricted to warm waters, but while C. Bacteriastroides shows an Indo-Pacific distribution, C.seychellarus is found in all three oceans.  相似文献

The chrysolaminaran from the marine diatom Chaetoceros debilis was isolated and characterized by NMR spectroscopy. Cells were harvested in the stationary phase of growth after the medium had been depleted of nitrate when the chrysolaminaran content was expected to be at its highest. The chrysolaminaran was isolated with an yield of 17.5 mg/L, which corresponds to 15.8 pg/cell. 1H NMR indicated that the structure was similar to that of a beta-(1-->3) main chain with beta-(1-->6)-linked side chains. The degree of polymerization was found to be 30, corresponding to a molecular weight of approximately 4900. Thirty-three percent of the residues were found to be beta-(1-->6)-linked branches. The characteristics of the beta-(1-->6) branching were examined by NOESY NMR, which suggested pustulan-like branches, being beta-(1-->6) linked chains connected to the main chain with few branch points. Confirmation of the 1H NMR data was done by 13C-DEPT, TOCSY, COSY and HMQC NMR spectroscopy. The assignment of the resonances of the main beta-(1-->3) and beta-(1-->6) chains is presented. The structure proposed from our analyses is compared against other chrysolaminaran structures.  相似文献

The canal-bearing diatom genus Nagumoea, described based on only morphological evidence, was tentatively assigned to the order Bacillariales, although its phylogenetic position remained unclear. Because three isolates of Nagumoea (SK002, SK024 and SK053) were successfully established from Japanese coasts, we performed their morphological observations and molecular phylogenetic analyses to discuss the phylogeny and taxonomic position of this genus. Strains SK002 and SK024 were identified as Nagumoea africana, whereas SK053 conformed with Nagumoea serrata. There was high interspecific divergence between N. africana and N. serrata in the rbcL sequences (8.03–8.17%), indicating their distinctness. Furthermore, intraspecific variations were detected within N. africana (2.35%) in the rbcL, implying its cryptic diversity. The maximum likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic trees inferred from the plastid rbcL, psbC and nuclear 18S rDNA genes recovered Nagumoea as monophyletic with strong statistical support and embedded within an unresolved, poorly supported lineage containing Achnanthes, Craspedostauros, Staurotropis and Undatella in the canal-bearing order Bacillariales (= the family Bacillariaceae). Although the constrained tree based on the monophyly of Nagumoea and the other canal-bearing clade (Surirellales and Rhopalodiales) was statistically rejected by the topology tests, the phylogenetic position of Nagumoea with other Bacillarialean members remains equivocal. The possession of two plastids positioned fore and aft, observed in the present study, and lack of keel, typical of the Bacillariales, indicate the possibility of Nagumoea being part of the ingroup of the Bacillariales or its closely related outgroup.  相似文献

A new fossil marine diatom resting spore morphogenus, Vallodiscus Suto gen. nov., is described using samples from Deep Sea Drilling Project Site 338 in the Norwegian Sea, Sites 436 and 438 in the north‐west Pacific Ocean and the onland Newport Beach Section, California. Vallodiscus is characterized by a single ring of veins along the epivalve margin and a hypovalve covered with circular depressions of several sizes with gentle elevation. The morpho‐genus bears three new species and one new combination: Vallodiscus simplexus Suto sp. nov., Vallodiscus complexus Suto sp. nov., Vallodiscus lanceolatus Suto sp. nov. and Vallodiscus chinchae (Mereschkowsky) Suto comb. nov.  相似文献

Gulf menhaden Brevoortia patronus , the main target of a commercial fishing industry in the Gulf of Mexico, and finescale menhaden Brevoortia gunteri , a non-targeted congeneric, have historically been difficult to differentiate. In this study, meristic counts resulted in two of three characteristics that clearly distinguished species, and genetic differences included 1) near fixation for different alleles between species at two of five loci and 2) significantly large divergence ( F ST) values between species at four loci. Implications for the correct identification of these species and their putative hybrids are discussed.  相似文献

A new species of Cocconeis has been found growing on the green seaweed Caulerpa racemosa (Forsskål) J. Agardh var. laete‐virens (Montagne) Weber van Bosse from Shikine Island in the Izu Islands on the Pacific coast of Japan; we propose the name Cocconeis shiki‐nensis Hid. Suzuki and describe the species by light microscopy (LM) and electron microscopy (EM). This taxon was also collected from the plastic plates used for rearing in seed production systems of the abalone Nordotis discus hannai Ino and the horned turban Turbo cornutus Solander in the Toyama Prefectural Fisheries Research Institute facing the Sea of Japan. The main morphological features of C. shikinensis are as follows. The valves are elliptic. The valve face of the raphid valve (RV) is slightly concave and that of the araphid valve (AV) is complementary to the RV and convex. The single plastid is flat, C‐shaped and elaborately lobed. The raphe on the RV is straight. The each terminal area expands to both sides along the valve margin, forming an arrowhead‐shaped, thickened hyaline area. The striae consist of small, round areolae and are radiate and uniseriate. On the AV, the striae consist of several alveoli. Each alveolus opens internally by means of a circular foramen. The valvocopula of each valve is fimbriate and open. The cingulum attached to the AV consists of three girdle bands; a valvocopula and two bands (copula and pleura), which are open and have ligulae. The relationship between C. shikinensis and similar members of the genus Cocconeis is discussed.  相似文献

A new genus and new species of the family Cletopsyllidae Huys & Willems, 1989 from deep-sea sediment in the Gulf of Mexico, are reported and fully described and illustrated. The new genus Pentacletopsyllus (type species: P. montagnisp. n.) can be distinguished from the four known genera of the family by antennule segmentation, length ratio of first and second endopodal segments of P1, and armature pattern on P5 exopod. It also differs from its sister genera by the rostrum being bifid at the tip, third segment of the female antennule having a smooth posterior margin, the baseoendopod of P5 with biarticulate outer setophore bearing basal seta, and female caudal rami without lobate expansion. A revised key to species of the family Cletopsyllidae Huys & Willems, 1989 is provided.  相似文献

Monoclonal strains of Chaetoceros species were collected from Chinese warm waters. Vegetative cells and resting spores were examined using light microscopy as well as scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Combined morphological and DNA sequence data from the hypervariable D1–D3 region of the nuclear ribosomal large subunit showed the presence of two new species within the section Compressa, herein described as Chaetoceros bifurcatus sp. nov. and C. millipedarius sp. nov. Both species possessed features typical of the section Compressa, but C. bifurcatus was characterized by the heavy intercalary setae fusing and extending together for a distance before diverging. The heavy setae were not visually contorted, lacking poroids and spines, in contrast with how the section Compressa has been defined. Chaetoceros millipedarius was characterized by a horizontal stagger of ordinary intercalary setae when the chain was seen in broad girdle view, making the chain look like a millipede. The two new species were supported by molecular phylogenetic analyses with C. bifurcatus sister to C. contortus var. ornatus, while C. millipedarius was sister to C. contortus var. contortus. Based on the morphological features exhibited in C. bifurcatus, the diagnosis of the section Compressa was emended to exclude “contorted” heavy setae and compressed valve faces.  相似文献

Heteroenopleus enigmaticus gen. nov., sp. nov. isdescribed from the northwestern Gulf of Mexico. Itoccurs both in the nearshore Gulf and in high salinityestuarine areas. Body wall musculature conforms tothe general plan of heteronemerteans, i.e. outerlongitudinal, middle circular and inner longitudinalmuscle layers. The head bears a pair of horizontallateral slits, characteristic of the lineids. Theproboscis musculature is of the heteronemerteanpalaeotype with two muscle layers, outer circularand inner longitudinal. Other morphologicalcharacters agree with those of heteronemerteans withone major exception: the proboscis is armed with tworows of structures, herein named parastylets. Thisarmature has no morphological similarity to either themicrovillar proboscideal spines of heteronemerteans orto the stylets of mono- or polystiliferans. A newsubfamily Heteroenopleinae is erected to contain theapomorphic character of an armed proboscis.  相似文献

Plastid inheritance was followed during sexual reproduction in the raphid pennate diatom Pseudo-nitzschia delicatissima, using rbcL haplotypes as plastid identification tools. Pseudo-nitzschia species are dioecious and show functional anisogamy with 'male' mating type+(PNd(+)) cells and 'female' PNd(-) cells. Vegetative cells possess two plastids. In P. delicatissima, meiosis results in two gametes that both contribute two plastids to the zygote. The latter initially contains four plastids, but during auxospore development two of these four seem to disappear, and the initial cell emerging from the auxospore appears to contain only two. Here we assessed if the plastids are inherited strictly unipaternally, strictly biparentally, or randomly. We traced the source of the plastids in the F(1) generation by using PNd(+) and PNd(-) parental strains with different rbcL genotypes, here denoted AA (homoplastidial, with two plastids of rbcL haplotype A) and BB (homoplastidial; two plastids of haplotype B). Results showed that 16 out of 96 strains raised each from single F(1) cells had retained two paternal (PNd(+)) plastids, 20 had two maternal (PNd(-)) plastids and the remaining 60 had one maternal and one paternal plastid. This pattern is in accordance with the hypothesis that either two of the four plastids are eliminated during auxospore formation, or that all plastids are retained in the auxospore and segregate in pairs joining at random during the first mitotic division of the initial cell. Heteroplastidic F(1)-strains retained the AB genotype throughout the vegetative phase of their life cycle. The finding that 60 out of 96 F(1) strains were heteroplastidial contrasts with an absence of such genotypes in our strains raised from single cells sampled in the Gulf of Naples.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to contribute to the knowledge of the syllids distributed in the eastern coasts of Mexico (Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean) taking into consideration their composition, distribution and diversity. Sampling was done at 77 stations including 49 in soft bottoms (terrigenous and carbonate sediments), and 28 in hard bottoms (coralline substrates) sampled in nine reef zones included in three reef systems (Veracruz, Campeche and Cozumel). In all 2084 individuals were collected (13.5% in soft sediments and 86.4% in coralline areas). Forty-five species were identified: 31 in soft bottoms and 38 in corals, with 21 species common to both types of environments. In soft bottoms, the highest species richness and diversity were found in the Carbonate Zone, while syllids were uncommon in the Terrigenous Zone. In hard bottoms, the highest density, species richness and diversity values were found in the Veracruz Reef System, followed by the Campeche Bank and Cozumel Island Reef Systems. The dominant species in soft bottoms were Haplosyllis spongicola, Exogone lourei, Typosyllis cornuta and T. papillosus, whereas T. alosae, T. corallicola, T. cornuta and H. spongicola dominated in hard bottoms. The importance and success of the syllids in both soft bottoms and reef environments, particularly in those of the Gulf of Mexico is emphasized.  相似文献

Species of the diatom genus Pseudo-nitzschia are common in the marine phytoplankton world-wide. Some species of this genus have been proved to be source of domoic acid (DA), a powerful toxin causing Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning (ASP) in humans and probably mass mortality in sea birds and mammals. Net plankton samples obtained during several cruises and seasons from the Pacific coasts of Mexico: western coasts of Baja California, Gulf of California, coasts of the tropical Pacific of Mexico (including the Gulf of Tehuantepec), were analyzed to study the species of the diatom genus Pseudo-nitzschia. Four species ( P. australis, a presumed toxic species, P. fraudulenta, P. lineola, P. pungens) and one former species of the genus, Nitzschia americana were recorded and studied by light and electron microscopy. The most common species was P. pungens, widely distributed along the Pacific coasts of Mexico. All other species appeared occasionally and in low relative abundances. The probable misidentification of P. australis as P. seriata is discussed, as well as the presence of another potentially toxic species, P. delicatissima, in the Gulf of California. No case of toxicity (ASP) has been fully documented and therefore related to toxic Pseudo-nitzschia species in the Gulf of California. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The morphology and fine valve structure of the marine epiphytic diatom Cocconeis heteroidea Hantzsch have been investigated. The entire frustule, including the internal and external structure of the raphid valve (RV) and araphid valve (AV), and the complete cingulum, are described using light microscopy and scanning and transmission electron microscopy, using a bleaching method. The strongly sigmoid raphe terminates in elongate hooked helictoglossae internally. The hymenes, with perforations arranged in a centric array, are located near the internal openings of the areolae in the RV. The striae in the AV consist of alveoli occluded by hymenes, that have perforations arranged in a parallel array and are located near the outer surface. The complete cingulum of AV consists of three open bands without fimbriae: a valvocopula, a copula with a ligula and a pleura with a small ligula. The RV has only a valvocopula which is open type and not fimbriate.  相似文献

Diatoms are the major primary producers in the world's aquatic environment; hence, their dynamics are an important focus in current studies. Viruses, along with other physical, chemical, and biological factors, have recently been recognized as potential factors of diatom mortality. We isolated and characterized a new diatom virus (Csp03RNAV) that causes lysis of the marine planktonic diatom Chaetoceros sp. strain SS08‐C03 isolated from Hiroshima Bay, Japan. Here, we present the physiology, morphology, and genome characteristics of this virus. Csp03RNAV was isolated from surface waters of Yatsushiro Sea, Japan. Virions were icosahedral and 32 nm in diameter, and accumulated in the cytoplasm of the host cells. The latent period was estimated to be <48 h. Csp03RNAV harbors a single‐stranded RNA genome, which has 9417 bases encoding two open reading frames that code for putative replication‐related proteins and putative structural proteins, respectively. The monophyly of Csp03RNAV and the other known diatom‐infecting single‐stranded RNA viruses (genus Bacillarnavirus), Rhizosolenia setigera RNA virus, Chaetoceros socialis f. radians RNA virus, and Chaetoceros tenuissimus RNA virus was strongly supported by phylogenetic analysis based on the amino acid sequence of the RNA‐dependent RNA polymerase domain. On the basis of these results, Csp03RNAV is considered to be a new member of the genus Bacillarnavirus.  相似文献

Nine polymorphic nuclear-gene (allozyme) loci were surveyed among 491 red drum ( Sciaenops ocellatus ) sampled in 1988 and 1989 from nearshore localities in the northern Gulf of Mexico (Gulf) and the Atlantic coast of the southeastern United States (Atlantic). Data were combined with those from a previous study to generate a data set of 762 individuals representing 11 sample localities in the Gulf and 175 individuals representing five sample localities in the Atlantic. The combined data set included individuals from the 1986 and 1987 year classes and permitted rigorous testing of both temporal and spatial genetic heterogeneity. Average heterozygosity-per-locus values (estimated using 33 assumed monomorphic loci) were 0·048 (Gulf red drum) and 0·046 (Atlantic red drum). Tests of heterogeneity in allele frequencies between year classes at individual localities and across regions (Gulf and Atlantic) were non-significant. Tests of spatial (geographic) heterogeneity indicated that red drum are weakly subdivided: genetically-differentiated subpopulations occur in the northern Gulf and along the south-eastern Atlantic coast. Genetic data were consistent with the hypothesis that red drum within the Gulf and along the Atlantic coast comprise singie subpopulalions. Genetic differences between Gulf and Atlantic red drum seem likeiy to stem from historical or recent interactions between dispersal and impediments to gene flow.  相似文献

Age and growth of early-life-stage Atlantic tarpon Megalops atlanticus collected from Mississippi coastal waters in the northcentral Gulf of Mexico (GOM) are described using otolith microstructure analysis. Tarpon leptocephali (n = 95, 16.0—27.8 mm standard length, LS) collected from June throughOctober 2013—2018, ranged in age from 22 to 43 days (mean = 30.9 ± 0.5 days). Leptocephalus somatic growth rates ranged 0.46—1.24 mm day−1 (mean = 0.76 ± 0.02 mm day−1), and leptocephalus otolith growth rates ranged 1.78—3.97 μm day−1 (mean = 2.58 ± 0.04 μm day−1). Growth rates were inversely correlated to leptocephalus age, indicating the shrinkage phase associated with leptocephalus metamorphosis. Juvenile tarpon (n = 358, 50—359 mm fork length, LF) were collected from August through December 2007—2018. Juveniles exhibited a positive allometric relationship (adjusted R2 = 0.99, P < 0.001) between length and mass. The age of 100 juveniles (71—277 mm LF) ranged from 76 to 174 days. Juvenile growth rate was estimated as 1.56 ± 0.11 mm day−1. Significant (P < 0.001) linear relationships were found between juvenile age and otolith metrics, including otolith mass (R2 = 0.81) and radius (R2 = 0.68). Evaluation of the backcalculated hatch dates suggests that specimens in the collection hatched from late May through mid-September with slight peaks during July and August. A Rao's Spacing Test of Uniformity indicates the presence of significant lunar periodicity in leptocephalus hatch dates (n = 95, U = 250.1, P < 0.05), with 50% of the leptocephali hatched within 5 days (before or after) of the full moon. This study fills critical gaps in the scientific knowledge of tarpon and provides estimates of early-life-history metrics for an iconic game fish at the northernmost extent of its GOM range.  相似文献
