Sleep after an inert capsule was compared with sleep after a hot, bedtime, milk-cereal drink (Horlicks). All-night electrophysiological recordings were made with 18 persons on 10 nights each.Restlessness during sleep at the end of the night was diminished after Horlicks in a group of 10 young adults. In an older group of eight adults, mean age 55 years, sleep after Horlicks was of longer total duration and was less broken by periods of wakefulness. In the latter group the improvement associated with Horlicks was most apparent late in the night and it increased with repeated administration.  相似文献

The effects of daily bathing and hot footbath (immersion of feet in hot water) in winter on the sleep behavior of nine healthy female volunteers were studied. Subjects were assigned to three sleep conditions: sleep after bathing (Condition B), sleep after hot footbath (Condition F), and sleep without either treatment (Control). Polysomnograms (consisting of electroencephalograph, electrooculograph, and electromyograph) were obtained, and body movements during sleep were measured while monitoring both the rectal and skin temperatures of subjects. In addition, subjective sleep sensations were obtained with a questionnaire answered immediately by the subjects on awakening. The rectal temperature increased by approximately 1.0 degree C under Condition B, but this elevation was not observed under Condition F compared with Control. In contrast, the respective increases in the mean skin temperature of participants subjected to bathing and hot footbath were greater than those of Control, although these temperature differences became negligible 2 h after subjects went to bed. The sleep onset latency was shortened under both conditions compared with Control. Body movements during the first 30 min of sleep in Control were greater than under the other conditions. Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep decreased under Condition B compared with Condition F, and stage 3 was greater under the latter condition compared with Control. As such, the subjective sleep sensations were better under the two treatment conditions. These results suggest that both daily bathing and hot footbath before sleeping facilitates earlier sleep onset. A hot footbath is especially recommendable for the handicapped, elderly, and disabled, who are unable to enjoy regular baths easily and safely.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo present a case of primary menopausal insomnia with hot flashes to introduce recent changes in technology and nomenclature of sleep medicine and to review presentation, diagnosis, and therapies for menopausal insomnia.MethodsClinical findings and results of sleep evaluation in the menopausal study patient are presented with details about polysomnography performed before and after therapy with pregabalin.ResultsA 56.5-year-old female athlete with severe hot flashes and insomnia of 12 years duration was treated with pregabalin, which ameliorated the hot flashes and sweats and improved sleep quality and architecture. Menopause is associated with hormonal and metabolic changes that disrupt sleep. Disruption of sleep can in turn lead to morbidity and metabolic sequelae. Hormonal treatment, although effective, carries risks unacceptable to many patients and physicians. To date, nonhormonal therapies of symptomatic menopause have not been objectively studied for effects on sleep efficiency and architecture. Primary menopausal insomnia is insomnia associated with menopause and not attributable to secondary causes. Polysomnographically, it seems characterized by a high percentage of slow-wave (N3) sleep, decreased rapid eye movement sleep, cyclic alternating pattern, and arousals.ConclusionsPrimary menopausal insomnia is probably mediated through a mechanism separate from hot flashes, and one can occur without the other. Thermal dysregulation and sleep abnormalities of menopause are probably related to more general changes mediated through loss of estrogenic effects on neuronal modulation of energy metabolism, and more clinical direction is expected as this research field develops. Identification of sleep disorders in menopausal women is important, and polysomnographic evaluation is underused in both clinical and research evaluations of metabolic disturbances. Experiments were carried out on four healthy male subjects in two separate sessions: (a) A baseline period of two consecutive nights, one spent at thermoneutrality [operative temperature (To) = 30 degrees C, dew-point temperature (Tdp) = 7 degrees C, air velocity (Va) = 0.2 m.s-1] and the other in hot condition (To = 35 degrees C, Tdp = 7 degrees C, Va = 0.2 m.s-1). During the day, the subjects lived in their normal housing and were engaged in their usual activities. (b) An acclimation period of seven consecutive daily heat exposures from 1400 to 1700 hours (To = 44 degrees C, Tdp = 29 degrees C, Va = 0.3 m.s-1). During each night, the subjects slept in thermoneutral or in hot conditions. The sleep measurements were: EEG from two sites, EOG from both eyes, EMG and EKG. Esophageal and ten skin temperatures were recorded continuously during the night. In the nocturnal hot conditions, a sweat collection capsule recorded the sweat gland activity in the different sleep stages. Results showed that passive body heating had no significant effect on the sleep structure of subsequent nights at thermoneutrality. In contrast, during nights at To = 35 degrees C an effect of daily heat exposure was observed on sleep. During the 2nd night of the heat acclimation period, sleep was more restless and less efficient than during the baseline night. The rapid eye movement sleep duration was reduced, while the rate of transient activation phases observed in sleep stage 2 increased significantly. On the 7th night, stage 4 sleep increased (+68%) over values observed during the baseline night.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

A double-blind controlled study of the effect of piperazine oestrone sulphate on sleep, depression, anxiety, and hot flushes was performed in 34 perimenopausal women. Half of the patients were given six weeks'' placebo followed by eight weeks'' oestrogen, and half remained on placebo throughout. Sleep was recorded electrophysiologically every week, and mood and anxiety were rated daily by means of visual analogue scales. Hot flushes were counted daily. Observer rating scales of anxiety and depression were complete at intervals. During the first month of active treatment the amount of intervening wakefulness in the first six hours of sleep decreased significantly more in the oestrone group than in those on placebo. Between the baseline period and the second treatment month the oestrone group showed a significantly greater decrease in the total amount of intervening wakefulness and in the frequency of awakenings. Their total amount of rapid eye movement sleep increased. Mood and anxiety improved and the number of hot flushes decreased to a similar degree in both groups. Although oestrogen did reduce the number of episodes of wakefulness in perimenopausal women complaining of insomnia, its effects on their psychological symptoms were little different to those of placebo.  相似文献

Abstract

Sixteen volunteers have been studied during 3–4 control nights and eight of these subjects again during four successive sleeps on 30‐h “days”;. The experiments took place in a comfortable environment provided by an isolation chamber. Rectal temperature and the sleep EEG were measured throughout. The relationship between sleep stages, particularly SWS and REM sleep, and short‐term changes in rectal temperature has been investigated during both protocols. Care was taken to correct for or remove those temperature changes that could be attributed to circadian rhythmicity or the effects of loss of masking due to being awake. Results showed that there was a small but significant effect of sleep stages, with SWS producing a fall and REM sleep a rise in rectal temperature after a delay of about 30–48 minutes. It is concluded that such spontaneous changes in sleeping subjects accord with the results of other studies which indicate that thermoregulatory reflexes to hot or cold stimuli alter in different sleep stages.  相似文献

The significance of sleep and factors that affect it have been well documented, however, in light of global climate change the effect of temperature on sleep patterns has only recently gained attention. Unlike many mammals, bats (order: Chiroptera) are nocturnal and little is known about their sleep and the effects of ambient temperature (Ta) on their sleep. Consequently we investigated seasonal temperature effects on sleep behaviour and surface body temperature of free-ranging Wahlberg’s epauletted fruit bat, Epomophorus wahlbergi, at a tree roost. Sleep behaviours of E. wahlbergi were recorded, including: sleep duration and sleep incidences (i.e. one eye open and both eyes closed). Sleep differed significantly across all the individuals in terms of sleep duration and sleep incidences. Individuals generally spent more time awake than sleeping. The percentage of each day bats spent asleep was significantly higher during winter (27.6%), compared with summer (15.6%). In summer, 20.7% of the sleeping bats used one eye open sleep, and this is possibly the first evidence of one-eye-sleep in non-marine mammals. Sleep duration decreased with extreme heat as bats spent significantly more time trying to cool by licking their fur, spreading their wings and panting. Skin temperatures of E. wahlbergi were significantly higher when Ta was ≥35°C and no bats slept at these high temperatures. Consequently extremely hot days negatively impact roosting fruit bats, as they were forced to be awake to cool themselves. This has implications for these bats given predicted climate change scenarios.  相似文献

During sleep, in thermoneutral conditions, the noise of a passing vehicle induces a biphasic cardiac response, a transient peripheral vasoconstriction and sleep disturbances. The present study was performed to determine whether or not the physiological responses were modified in a hot environment or after daytime exposure to both heat and noise. Eight young men were exposed to a nocturnal thermoneutral (20 degrees C) or hot (35 degrees C) environment disturbed by traffic noise. During the night, the peak intensities were of 71 dB(A) for trucks, 67 dB(A) for motorbikes and 64 dB(A) for cars. The background noise level (pink noise) was set at 30 dB(A). The noises were randomly distributed at a rate of 9.h-1. Nights were equally preceded by daytime exposure to combined heat and noise or to no disturbance. During the day, the noises as well as the background noise levels were increased by 15 dB(A) and the rate was 48.h-1. Electroencephalogram (EEG) measures of sleep, electrocardiograms and finger pulse amplitudes were continuously recorded. Regardless of the day condition, when compared with undisturbed nights, the nocturnal increase in the level of heart rate induced by heat exposure disappeared when noise was added. Percentages, delays, magnitudes and costs of cardiac and vascular responses as well as EEG events such as transient activation phases (TAP) due to noise were not affected by nocturnal thermal load or by the preceding daytime exposure to disturbances.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

A multicentric, open, prospective, observational and no-randomized clinical trial was carried out in Spain with 190 postmenopausal women receiving a soy preparation rich in isoflavones (PHYTO SOYA, capsules containing 17.5 mg isoflavones). The main object of the present study was to investigate its efficacy in alleviating the symptomatology derived from the lack of estrogen, mainly hot flushes, but also other symptoms such as sleep disorder, anxiety, depression, vaginal dryness, loss of libido and bone pain. Each patient received 35 mg isoflavones per day in two doses. During the four months' treatment, a statistically significant decrease in the number of hot flushes with PHYTO SOYA was experienced by 80.82% women; only 5,48% patients did not improve with the treatment. The average reduction was 47.8%, which is equivalent to 4 hot flushes. All the other studied parameters also showed a statistically significant decrease. No severe side-effects were reported and tolerance was excellent. Treatment with PHYTO SOYA resulted in a significant improvement of the symptomatology that accompanies the lack of estrogen during menopause.  相似文献

To assess the effect of continuous heat exposure on the nocturnal patterns of renin, aldosterone, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), and cortisol, six young men were exposed to thermoneutral environment for 5 days, followed by a 5-day acclimation period in a hot dry environment (35 degrees C). Blood was collected at 10-min intervals during the second night at thermoneutrality (N0) and during the first (N1) and the last (N5) nights of heat exposure. Polygraphic recordings of sleep were scored according to established criteria. Continuous heat exposure led to progressive decreases in the 24-h urinary volume and in Na excretion, whereas urinary osmolality increased. After 5 days of uninterrupted heat, significant increases were found in plasma volume (P less than 0.05), osmolality (P less than 0.01), plasma Na (P less than 0.01), and protein levels (P less than 0.05). Sweat gland output increased during the first 3 days and then declined without any concomitant increases in body temperature. Compared with N0, there were no differences in plasma renin activity (PRA) and aldosterone (PA) profiles during N1 at 35 degrees C. However, during N5 the mean PRA and PA levels were significantly (P less than 0.05) enhanced, and their nocturnal oscillations were amplified (P less than 0.05). This amplification occurred mainly in the second part of the night when regular rapid-eye-movement and non-rapid-eye-movement sleep cycles were observed, leading to a general upward trend in the nocturnal profiles. The relationship between the nocturnal PRA oscillations and the sleep cycles was not modified. ACTH and cortisol patterns were not affected by continuous heat exposure.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The petroleum ether fraction (PEF) from the EtOH extract of flowers and buds of Chrysanthemum indicum was evaluated on antinociception in mice using chemical and thermal models of nociception. PEF administered orally at doses of 188 and 376 mg/kg produced significant inhibitions on chemical nociception induced by intraperitoneal acetic acid, subplantar formalin or capsaicin injections and on thermal nociception in the tail-flick test and the hot plate test. In the pentobarbital sodium-induced sleep time test and the open-field test, PEF neither enhanced the pentobarbital sodium-induced sleep time nor impaired the motor performance, indicating that the observed antinociception was unrelated to sedation or motor abnormality. In a measurement of core body temperature, PEF did not affect temperature within 80 min. Moreover, PEF-induced antinociception in the capsaicin test was insensitive to naloxone, yohimbine or methylene blue, but was significantly antagonized by atropine and glibenclamide. These results suggested that PEF-produced antinociception might be involvement in the ATP sensitive K+ channels and the mAChRs-ATP sensitive K+ channels pathway. In additional, the antinociception of PEF might attribute to the synergic effects of these two compounds, 2-[[2-[2-[(2-ethylcyclopropyl)methyl] cyclop Cyclopropaneoctanoic and n-hexadecanoic acid, or the property of a single compound, which merited exploring further.  相似文献

The heartwood of Syringa oblata Lindl. (SO) is one of Mongolian folk medicines to treat insomnia and pain, while its pharmacological evaluation and underlying mechanism remain unclear. In this study, the sedative effect of ethanol extract of SO (ESO) was evaluated with the locomotor activity test and the threshold dose of pentobarbital sodium-induced sleep test in mice, and the hot plate test, acetic acid-induced writhing test, and formalin test in mice were used to evaluate its analgesic effect. The underlying mechanism of ESO analgesia was explored by RT-PCR and western blot analysis, which is associated with the regulation of the NF-κB signaling pathway. Besides, the main constituents of ESO were characterized by LC/MS data analysis and comparison with isolated pure compounds. The current findings brought evidence for clinical application and further pharmacological and phytochemical studies on SO.  相似文献

Target tracking with wireless sensor networks (WSNs) has been a hot research topic recently. Many works have been done to improve the algorithms for localization and prediction of a moving target with smart sensors. However, the results are frequently difficult to implement because of hardware limitations. In this paper, we propose a practical distributed sensor activation algorithm (DSA2) that enables reliable tracking with the simplest binary-detection sensors. In this algorithm, all sensors in the field are activated with a probability to detect targets or sleep to save energy, the schedule of which depends on their neighbor sensors’ behaviors. Extensive simulations are also shown to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Great improvement in terms of energy-quality tradeoff and excellent robustness of the algorithm are also emphasized in the simulations.  相似文献

In order to study the functional interaction between the delta sleep and the REM sleep some psychophysiological features of REM sleep were examined in REM-onset (without any preceding delta sleep--"early REM period") and in the REM period (REMP) terminating the normal sleep cycle (with the preceding delta sleep) of 92 daytime sleep attacks in 10 narcoleptic patients. Under these conditions the significant differences exist in the characteristics of the dream reports and in subjective estimations of sleep quality and duration. Sleep was evaluated as "superficial" and underestimations of sleep duration took place after an early REMP. Correct estimations of sleep duration and evaluations of sleep as "deep" dominated after REMP enging sleep cycles. The results obtained indicate the functional interaction between the delta sleep and REM sleep existing in the sleep cycle and largely determining the psychic content of the brain activity in the REM sleep.  相似文献

A salient feature of mammalian sleep is the alternation between rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM (NREM) sleep. However, how these two sleep stages influence each other and thereby regulate the timing of REM sleep episodes is still largely unresolved. Here, we developed a statistical model that specifies the relationship between REM and subsequent NREM sleep to quantify how REM sleep affects the following NREM sleep duration and its electrophysiological features in mice. We show that a lognormal mixture model well describes how the preceding REM sleep duration influences the amount of NREM sleep till the next REM sleep episode. The model supports the existence of two different types of sleep cycles: Short cycles form closely interspaced sequences of REM sleep episodes, whereas during long cycles, REM sleep is first followed by an interval of NREM sleep during which transitions to REM sleep are extremely unlikely. This refractory period is characterized by low power in the theta and sigma range of the electroencephalogram (EEG), low spindle rate and frequent microarousals, and its duration proportionally increases with the preceding REM sleep duration. Using our model, we estimated the propensity for REM sleep at the transition from NREM to REM sleep and found that entering REM sleep with higher propensity resulted in longer REM sleep episodes with reduced EEG power. Compared with the light phase, the buildup of REM sleep propensity was slower during the dark phase. Our data-driven modeling approach uncovered basic principles underlying the timing and duration of REM sleep episodes in mice and provides a flexible framework to describe the ultradian regulation of REM sleep in health and disease.  相似文献

Effects of thermal environment on sleep and circadian rhythm   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
ABSTRACT: The thermal environment is one of the most important factors that can affect human sleep. The stereotypical effects of heat or cold exposure are increased wakefulness and decreased rapid eye movement sleep and slow wave sleep. These effects of the thermal environment on sleep stages are strongly linked to thermoregulation, which affects the mechanism regulating sleep. The effects on sleep stages also differ depending on the use of bedding and/or clothing. In semi-nude subjects, sleep stages are more affected by cold exposure than heat exposure. In real-life situations where bedding and clothing are used, heat exposure increases wakefulness and decreases slow wave sleep and rapid eye movement sleep. Humid heat exposure further increases thermal load during sleep and affects sleep stages and thermoregulation. On the other hand, cold exposure does not affect sleep stages, though the use of beddings and clothing during sleep is critical in supporting thermoregulation and sleep in cold exposure. However, cold exposure affects cardiac autonomic response during sleep without affecting sleep stages and subjective sensations. These results indicate that the impact of cold exposure may be greater than that of heat exposure in real-life situations; thus, further studies are warranted that consider the effect of cold exposure on sleep and other physiological parameters.  相似文献

Aromatherapy with essential oils is one of the most popular complementary medical tools for improving sleep quality. However, only a few reports have objectively measured the effects of essential oils on sleep. Here, we used objective and subjective measures to analyze the effects of the essential oils of lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) on the sleep quality of healthy university students. The participants were monitored for 15 consecutive nights as they inhaled lavender oil and sweet orange oil, in a crossover design. Their sleep was monitored objectively by actigraphy, and total sleep time (TST), sleep efficiency, sleep latency, and wake after sleep onset (WASO) were analyzed. Their sleep was analyzed subjectively using Oguri–Shirakawa–Azumi (OSA) sleep inventory scores. Inhalation of an essential oil improved sleep measures only in participant whose sleep quality was poor in the control condition. Lavender seemed more effective than sweet orange in objective measures, especially in improving sleep latency. In the subjective sleep analysis, the essential oils improved sleep maintenance, dreaming, and sleep length in subjects who had poor sleep quality. Sweet orange seemed more effective than lavender in the subjective sleep measures. The difference between the two oils suggests that expectancy bias had little effect on the hypnotic effect of lavender on objective sleep. Although no obvious effect was observed in good sleepers, the inhalation of lavender oil could be effective for helping poor sleepers improve objective sleep quality.
