Summary The natural diet of a population of Cepaea nemoralis living in a sand dune system in southwest England was investigated by field observations and examination of crop and faeces contents. The food consisted of dead material from the commoner plants on the site. Very little green matter was eaten and there was little evidence for seasonal variation in the diet.Consumption and egestion rates were measured gravimetrically on natural foods (dead leaves of Taraxacum officinale and Ononis repens) and artificial foods. Consumption rates were temperature dependent over the measured range of 5–20°C and also varied with the food substrate, an artificial food (rat food pellets) being consumed at the highest rate. High variability in the results can probably be linked to the live weight and activity cycles of the snails.Assimilation was estimated as the difference between consumption and egestion, since a trial of the ash-ratio method proved unsuitable with this animal. Assimilation efficiency did not vary with temperature over the range studied, but was dependent on food substrate, the two artificial foods (rat food pellets and lettuce leaves) being assimilated more efficiently (71–73%) than natural foods (30–44%).Faeces produced from the digestive gland could be distinguished and were measured separately. The amount produced was very small compared to the gut faeces, but increased significantly when a relatively indigestible food was used.  相似文献

Summary The population densities of snails living in beech litter were studied form March 1968 to April 1969. Litter production over one year was measured and the role of snails in litter disappearance assessed.Snails were extracted from litter using a modified Vágvölgyi (1952) flotation method, extraction efficiencies being 84%. The mean annual population density of the twenty-one species of snail recorded on the main sampling site was estimated at 489/m2. Carychium tridentatum was the most numerous species, with a mean density of 200/m2. Acanthinula aculeata, Punctum pygmaeum and Vitrea contracta also had fairly high mean densities. The mean annual biomass was 699 mg dry wt./m2 or 278 mg ash-free dry wt./m2. Hygromia striolata and Oxychilus cellarius/alliarius were the most important species in terms of biomass on the main site. Within the limits of accuracy imposed by the sampling regime the population densities of four out of five of the species (C. tridentatum, A. aculeata, V. contracta, Retinella pura) studied remained unchanged throughout the year, whereas P. pygmaeum had a significantly higher autumn population. C. tridentatum populations were highly aggregated at all times of the year, most markedly so in June. Other species were aggregated at certain times of the year only. Samples taken from other sites showed total population densities of snails ranging from 185–1082 snails/m2.A total tree litter production of 652 g/m2/annum was recorded of which 584g/m2/annum was of beech material. 72% fell in the October–December period. 58% of the beech litter-fall was leaves, 5.2% bud-scales, 27% fruits and 10% twigs and bark. Summation of appropriate field layer peak standing crops amounted to 23.3 g/m2. This was considered as potential litter and was equivalent to 3.4% of the total litter input. The litter standing on the woodland floor in Septermber 1968 was 2,700 g/m2, hence, assuming a steady state, litter turnover time was estimated as 4.5 years. It was calculated that the total snail population ingested 0.35–0.43% of the annual litter input, of which 49% was assimilated. The role of the individual species is examined in relation to concepts of key species in ecosystem functioning. The possible role of slugs in decomposition processes is also discussed.  相似文献

Summary Experiments were done to measure the respiration rates of twenty species of terrestrial snail. Acclimatization phenomena were sought in two species, Discus rotundatus and Hygromia striolata, but not detected. The Q 10s between 5 and 15° C for the twenty species varied between 1.20 and 4.27, with a mean Q 10 of 2.21. Q 10 was higher in larger snail species. There was an increase in respiration with body weight for those species which grew to a large size, but the trend was not detectable in species with small adult weight. A double log plot of mean respiration rate of each species against the mean weight of each species gave a linear relationship.Mean monthly leaf litter temperature was measured in a beech woodland site in Wytham Woods, Berkshire. Litter temperature, in combination with snail population data and size class distribution, was used to calculate population metabolism of the snails on the site. Annual population metabolism amounted to 7.0934 kcals/m2/annum. The estimated annual production was 4.4386 kcals/m2. The P/R ratios varied between 0.143 and 1.861, P/B ratios varying from 1.0 to 34.3. From the data it is suggested that respiration alone will not give a good measure of the importance of different species in litter breakdown.  相似文献

Summary Specimens of the terrestrial gastropod Arianta arbustorum were fed on cadmium- or copper-enriched agar plates with the aim of performing an input/output analysis and of studying the distribution of these metals in several organs of the snails. After a feeding period of 20 days about 45% of cadmium were lost. 36% accumulated in the hepatopancreas, where a cadmium concentration of more than 500 g/g was measured. The efficiency of cadmium assimilation decreased from about 90% at the beginning to about 55% after 20 days. Copper was distributed more evenly than cadmium, but the main site of copper storage seemed to be the foot/mantle tissues, where 49% of the ingested copper were found. The efficiency of copper assimilation always exceeded 95%. The patterns of distribution and assimilation of copper and cadmium are discussed in relation to differences in the cytological and biochemical detoxification mechanisms which exist for these metals in molluscs.  相似文献

Summary Three species of terrestrial Helicidae (Helix pomatia, Cepaea hortensis andArianta arbustorum) were fed cadmium-rich diet in the laboratory. The snails accumulated high amounts of the metal in their hepatopancreas. Most cadmium and some zinc were found, after centrifugation, in the soluble fractions from which a cadmium-binding protein was isolated for each species by ion exchange and gel chromatography. The proteins contained different amounts of cadmium, but little or no zinc, and showed high absorption at 254 nm indicating the presence of cadmium-mercaptide bonds. After gel filtration, a molecular weight of 12000 was found for cadmium-binding proteins fromHelix pomatia andArianta arbustorum, whereas a molecular weight of 10 000 was found for a cadmium-binding protein fromCepaea hortensis. SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis showed one single band for each protein fromHelix pomatia andArianta arbustorum and suggested a molecular weight of 11000 for both species. Amino acid analysis revealed, for each protein, high amounts of cysteine (12–20%), glycine (15–19%), and serine (12–14%), and moderately elevated contents of lysine (9–13%) and alanine (4–8%), but no methionine and only traces, if any, of aromatic amino acids. The ratios of cadmium to cysteine were 1:5, 1:10 and 1:3 in the proteins fromHelix pomatia,Cepaea hortensis andArianta arbustorum, respectively. Some features of the isolated proteins resembled mammalian metallothioneins. Most characteristics, however, differed from true metallothioneins and were similar to cadmium-binding proteins found in some marine molluscs.  相似文献

Litterfall from a Melaleuca forest was investigated as part of chemical cycling studies on the Magela Creek floodplain in tropical, northern Australia. The forest contained two species of tree, Melaleuca cajaputi and Melaleuca viridiflora, with a combined average density of 294 trees ha–1. The M. viridiflora trees had diameter breast height measurements ranging from 11.8 to 62.0 cm, median class 25.1–30.0cm and a mean value of 29.2±1.0 cm, compared to 13.0 to 66.3 cm, 30.1–35.0cm and 33.5±1.0cm for M. cajaputi trees. A regression model between tree height, diameter breast height and fresh weight was determined and used to calculate average tree weights of 775±1.6kg for M. viridiflora and 1009±1.6kg for M. cajaputi, and a total above-ground fresh weight of 263±0.3t ha–1. The weight of litter recorded each month on the ground beneath the tree canopy ranged from 582±103 to 2176±376 g m–2 with a monthly mean value of 1105±51 g m–2. The coefficient of variation of 52% on this mean indicates the large spatial and temporal variability in litter distribution over the study site. This variability was greatly affected by the pattern of water flow and litter transport during the Wet season. Litterfall from the trees was evaluated using two techniques - nets and trays. The results from these techniques were not significantly different with annual litterfall collected in the nets being 705 ± 25 g m–2 and in the trays 716±49 g m–2. The maximum monthly amount of litterfall, 108 ±55g m–2, occurred during the Dry season months of June–July. Leaf material comprised 70% of the total annual weight of litter, 480±29 g m–2 in the nets and 495 ± 21 g m–2 in the trays. The tree density and weight of litter suggest that the Melaleuca forests are highly productive and contribute a large amount of material to the detrital/debris turnover cycle on the floodplain.  相似文献

Summary The feeding behaviour of four sympatric isopods from a Hong Kong forest has been investigated. The study included two armadillids (Formosillo raffaelei and Orodillo maculatus) and two philosciids (Burmoniscus ocellatus and Burmoniscus sp.). When given a choice of eight types of litter, all isopod species showed significant dietary selection, and food preferences were similar. Berchemia racemosa (Rhamnaceae) was most readily consumed, followed by Celtis sinensis (Ulmaceac), while feeding rates on Cinnamomum camphora (Lauraceae) were low. The armadillids exhibited a narrower dietary spectrum than the philosciids. All isopods showed significant differences in consumption rates when each litter type was presented separately to them. Cinnamomum camphora was eaten the slowest, while Celtis sinensis and Berchemia racemosa were the top-ranked species. Although patterns of litter ranking based on percentage eaten or feeding rates were similar, all isopods ate more food when given a mixture of leaves than when presented with a single litter type. Assimilation rates were, in general, positively related to feeding rates. On this basis, it appears that assimilation may influence food preference. There were no clear relationships between food preference or feeding rates and ash, calcium, copper, soluble tannin or energy content of the litter. This finding may indicate the benefits of isopods maintaining a mixed diet, consuming certain litter species to meet their calcium or copper requirements and then switching to others so as to meet daily energy needs and to avoid excessive injection of tannins or plant allelochemicals.  相似文献

Summary The food of the landsnail Cepaea nemoralis has been studied in natural environments. The diet of Cepaea in nature consists predominantly of senescent or dead plant material. Green material of some species, especially Urtica dioica, is also eaten in large quantities and algae, animal remains, fungi and, possibly, living aphids and thripses are included in the diet. The place where a snail is found during the day usually has a great predictive value for the food it ate during the preceding night. There are, however, exceptions. Species such as Aegopodium podagraria, Calystegia sepium and Phragmites communis are used very often to sit on but are hardly ever eaten. On the other hand species such as Urtica dioica and Ranunculus repens were very much favoured as foodplants but much less favoured as resting places. The distribution of the snails over the various components of the vegetation is not random and neither is the selection of food. The snail distribution does not explain the food selection or vice versa.Quantity of food probably is hardly ever limiting for the distribution and abundance of Cepaea. Some essential components may, however, very well be in short supply and thus be limiting.  相似文献

Endozochorous seed dispersal by herbivores can affect plant spatial dynamics and macroecological patterns. We have investigated the number and species composition of viable seeds deposited in faeces of a full guild of macroherbivores (four deer and two lagomorph species) in a forest in eastern Britain. One hundred and one plant species germinated from faecal pellet material, 85 of which were among the 247 vascular plant species recorded in the forest. However, three species – Chenopodium album, Urtica dioica and Agrostis stolonifera – comprised 56% of the seedlings recorded. Of the species recorded in faecal samples, 36% had no recognised dispersal mechanism, while very few (7%) were adapted to endozoochorous dispersal (fleshy fruit or nut). The number of species dispersed by the herbivores was ranked Cervus elaphus and Dama dama (96) > Capreolus capreolus (40) > Muntiacus reevesi (31) > Oryctolagus cuniculus (21) > Lepus europaeus (19), with the other taxa dispersing subsets of those dispersed by C. elpahus and D. dama. The invasive M. reevesi deposited the fewest seeds per gram of faecal pellet material (0.4 g−1) and hence fewer seeds per unit area than other deer species despite their numerical dominance, while C. elaphus/D. dama deposited the most (0.43 seeds m−2 year−1). Due to differences in faecal seed density among habitats combined with the ranging behaviour of animals, more seeds were deposited in younger stands, enhancing the potential contribution of macroherbivores to population persistence by dispersal and colonisation in a successional mosaic. The range of Arianta arbustorum is spreading eastwards across the Baltic Sea region. Because A. arbustorum is a common pest in agriculture and horticulture, understanding the origin and factors involved in the eastward range expansion of the land snail are important for future planning of species management. In the present study, we compared the genetic diversity of A. arbustorum in the recently established easternmost populations and across Europe using standard phylogeographic analyses on a mitochondrial marker (cytochrome c oxidase I). We also applied bioclimatic envelope modeling to determine the environmental factors responsible for the ongoing range shifts of A. arbustorum. The unique haplotype lineage was found in all Baltic Sea populations in contrast with the highly polymorphic populations from Central Europe and the Alps. The peripheral easternmost populations were fixed for the dominant haplotype of the Baltic lineage. Retrospective niche modeling confirmed previous assumptions of multiple glacial refugia of A. arbustorum in Europe. Our results also show that the emergence of new populations in the easternmost part of the A. arbustorum range and the presumptive loss of rear-edge populations in western Europe are most plausibly caused by ongoing climate change, which will have a remarkable effect on the future distribution of genetic diversity within the range of the copse snail.  相似文献

To determine the contribution of food ingestion (trophic pathway) to PCB contamination of zooplankton in the river Meuse (Belgium), we used 14C-labelled algae (Dictyosphaerium ehrenbergianum) to measure ingestion and assimilation rates in the rotifer species Brachionus calyciflorus. When the concentration of algae in the culture medium varied from 20 103 to 200 103 algal cells ml–1 (0.12 to 1.18 mg Cl–1), the Brachionus calyciflorus ingestion rate varied from 0.25 ± 0.12 to 1.52 ± 0.43 ng C ind–1 h–1 at 15 °C and from 0.74 ± 0.17 to 5.93 ± 0.61 ng C ind–1 h–1 at 20 °C. The assimilation efficiency (ratio of the assimilation rate to the ingestion rate) measured in a culture medium containing 200 103 algal cells ml–1 was 55.7 ± 5.8%. Since the PCB concentration measured in the phytoplankton of the river Meuse is about 3 µg PCBs g–1 D.W., the estimated PCB contamination of zooplankton ascribable to the trophic pathway ranges from 0.22 ± 0.17 to 1.31 ± 0.77 µg PCBs g–1 D.W. at 15 °C and from 0.64 ± 0.34 to 5.10 ± 2.10 µg PCBs g–1 D.W. at 20°C. The lower figure based on measurements effected at 20 °C is comparable to the actual level measured in zooplankton samples collected in the river Meuse (0.69 ± 0.20 µg PCBs g–1 D.W.). The applicability of the formula used in our estimate was checked in a 48-hour in vitro experiment in which the rotifers were fed contaminated algae. The PCB accumulation measured in the rotifers was found to coincide with the calculated PCB contamination. Additional experiments were carried out to determine the contribution of the direct pathway to PCB contamination of zooplankton living in the river Meuse (0.02 µg PCBs l–1 of water; average dissolved organic matter: 3 mg C 1–1). The PCB concentration in zooplankton resulting from direct uptake of PCBs from the water was estimated at 0.19 ± 0.05 µg PCBs g–1 D.W. These results show that in zooplankton living in polluted ecosystems, PCBs are likely to accumulate via the trophic pathway to concentrations up to 30 times higher than by direct contamination. Furthermore, our estimates of PCB contamination via the trophic pathway coincide quite well with actual concentrations measured in situ.  相似文献

Abstract

Shoots of Brachythecium rutabulum, Lophocolea bidentata, Plagiomnium undulatum, Pseudoscleropodium purum and Thuidium tamariscinum were allowed to grow in contact with litter of Urtica dioica, Succisa pratensis, Holcus lanatus, A venula pratensis, Pseudoscleropodium purum and soils of contrastee,-fertility. All the species were positively growth-stimulated when grown in contact with the stem litter of Urtica dioica and the fertile soil. The other treatments included did not enhance significantly the growth of the five bryophyte species. An attempt is made to relate these responses to the ecology of the species and the possible role that plant litter might exert upon bryophyte distribution in herbaceous vegetation.  相似文献

Effects of terrestrial isopods on the decomposition of woodland leaf litter   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Summary The indirect contribution terrestrial isopods make to decomposition processes by stimulating microbial activites has been quantified in laboratory experiments. The extent to which microbial metabolism is enhanced as a result of the passage of Betula pendula leaf litter through the alimentary system of isopods was measured for both freshly fallen and decayed leaves. Faeces derived from 1 g freshly fallen litter lost 75 mg g-1 D.W. more than did intact leaves, as a result of enhanced microbial metabolism. Faeces derived from 1 g of previously decayed leaves, which were shown to be the preferred food of isopods, lost only 17.5 mg g-1 D.W. more than intact decaying leaves. The isopod's direct contribution to soil metabolism was calculated to be 151 mg and 138 mg g-1 litter ingested when fed on freshly fallen and decayed leaves respectively. It is concluded that the physical and chemical changes in the leaf substrate which result from fragmentation and digestion by isopods do not necessarily accelerate the subsequent decomposition of the litter very significantly. Fungal propagule density was 3.2x and 3.6x higher in faeces derived from freshly fallen and decayed leaves respectively than in the intact litter. Numbers of viable bacteria were correspondingly 126x and 34x higher in faeces than in the freshly fallen and the decayed leaves. Levels of microbial inhibitors were lower in the faeces than in the leaves but levels of free amino acids stayed higher for longer in the faeces than they did in intact litter. In the field the physical removal of litter by the soil macrofauna from surface to deeper and moister microsites may be the most important indirect contribution that they make to decomposition processes.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of leaf litter on the establishment of Eucalyptus incrassata, a mallee eucalypt. It has been suggested that litter accumulation may hinder seedling establishment, and that the removal of litter may be one of the mechanisms through which fire enhances recruitment. We conducted factorial experiments testing the effects of three kinds of leaf litter on E. incrassata seeds and seedlings at three contiguous sites with different land use histories. One site was an uncleared E. incrassata open mallee woodland (Mallee site), one a cleared area that had been ungrazed for about five years (Pasture site) and the third an area of mallee rolled some 40 years ago and permitted to regenerate (Regrowth site). Litter had no effect on emergence of planted E. incrassata seeds, but emergence differed between sites. Overall, the percentage of seeds that germinated and emerged was substantial (mean 35.2% ± 25.9%). Seedling shoot biomass did not differ between sites or litter treatments. Although seedlings grown in Pasture litter suffered higher mortality rates, overall mortality rates were low (mean 13.2% ± 15.5%), suggesting that leaf litter has little effect on recruitment rates during winter and spring. We conclude that leaf litter does not affect emergence or growth in young E. incrassata seedlings during winter and spring, when most establishment occurs. Our results emphasize the difficulty in predicting litter effects on recruitment.  相似文献

Summary Calow and Fletcher have shown that assimilation efficiency can be calculated from the ratios of an assimilated radiotracer (e.g. 14C) and a non-assimilated tracer (e.g. 51Cr) in the food and faeces of freshwater pulmonates [Oecologia (Berl.) 9, 155–170 (1972)]. It is suggested that their counting methods have limitations and are not wholly suitable for wide biological application. An alternative technique was tested using third instar larvae of a Kenyan cetoniid, Pachnoda ephippiata (Gerst.) (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae), fed on an artificial food medium labelled with 14C-glucose and 51CrCl3. The activity of both tracers in food and faeces was estimated from simultaneous counts of the emissions recorded by a liquid scintillation spectrometer. The scintillant solution, toluene—Triton X-100—PPO, extracted virtually all of the labelled tracers from 0.2 g samples of the agar-cellulose-water food medium. The calculated assimilation efficiency values for glucose increased from 50.2% to 78.6% over the 6 days following exposure to the labelled food. 90.8% of the total 51Cr recovered was egested during these 6 days, 76.8% during the first 3. An ecologically more meaningful estimate of assimilation efficiency was calculated by integrating the 14C and 51Cr counts over the 15 days that faeces were collected. The applications of this approach to measuring assimilation efficiency are wide. They include the possibility of measuring how much excreta are produced from a given amount of Ingesta and of determining the role of gut-microorganisms in the assimilation of their host's food.  相似文献

The amphibious land-molluse,Perforatella rubiginosa, is a common, wide-spread and characteristic inhabitant of the freshwater tidal region of the river Scheldt and its tributaries in NW Belgium. The species occupies a rather narrow zone in the uppermost intertidal area, which is characterized by large amounts of tidal drift covering the bottom, and usually by a luxuriant vegetation of tall, nitrophilous herbs, often withUrtica dioica dominant. Other characteristic molluscs of this zone areCarychium minimum, Oxyloma pfeifferi, O. sarsi, Deroceras laeve, Vitrea crystallina andZonitoides nitidus, locally alsoNesovitrea hammonis. Eurytemora affinis, a calanoid copepod, has been encountered in Volkerak-Zoommeer (Rhine delta region, S.W. Netherlands) both before this lake system was isolated in 1987 from the estuarine influence, and after. It was the main particle-feeding crustacean at all the 3 sampling stations in March–April 1990 when it reached densities of up to 215 ind.l–1. Its decline from mid April onwards, and low densities through summer, coincided with increase in cladocerans, especiallyDaphnia spp. (D. pulex andD. galeata), a decrease in seston (<33m) and chlorophyll concentrations and in primary production rates. The clearance rates (CR) ofEurytemora measured in the spring period varied enormously (0.6–24 ml.ind–1.d–1) depending mainly on size (0.44–1.06 mm), food concentration (0.8–2.2 mg C.l–1), and the water temperature which varied only narrowly (8.0–9.0°C). Mean ingestion rates of the animals measuring 0.68±0.02 mm during the study was 6.7±3.2 gC.ind–1.d–1; and assimilation efficiency varied between 27 and 53% (mean: 41±9%). The weight specific CR (SCR) varied between 0.96 and 6.4 litre.mg–1 body C.d–1. Pooled regression of SCR on the animal's body weight at the 3 study stations revealed a significant inverse relationship. Also daily ration and specific assimilation ofE. affinis varied greatly and inversely with the body weight. This calanoid contributed from about 50 to 100% to the zooplankton community grazing rates and assimilation rates, the former often exceeding the phytoplankton primary production.  相似文献

Many wetlands of the Swan Coastal Plain in southwestern Australia have catchments with significant areas of native vegetation. The dynamics of P release from their litter and its significance as a P source for wetlands have not been previously investigated. Litterfall of common plant species were collected before the local rainy season, and examined for P leaching properties under inundated conditions. Inundation of `intact' litter materials for 24 hours leached 30±7.5% (95% confidence level) of this Tot-P in litter, measured by anion exchange membrane extraction. This increased to 46.9% of `apparent' P release at 115 days. The released P was incorporated into microbial biomass during leaching so modifying leachate concentrations. Using liquid chloroform `fumigation' it was estimated that 36.2 ± 15.6% (95% confidence level) of Tot-P leached during the 115-day inundation was in the microbial biomass pool, not directly measured by AEM extraction. P leaching during initial and prolonged inundation correlated with litter Ca, Mg and total base concentration, but the initial Tot-P concentration of litter was the best predictor for P leaching, in both short-term and prolonged inundation (R 2 = 0.80 and 0.93, p < 0.0001). The high P leaching rate during 24 hours suggested that P from litter during `first storm' events could produce a significant P flux from local catchments and contribute nutrients to downstream wetlands.  相似文献

Decomposition of leaf litter of Dombeya goetzenii in the Njoro River, Kenya   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Decomposition of the leaves of Dombeya goetzenii (K. Schum) in the Njoro River is described and analysed. The loss of the ash-free dry mass was rapid during the first 14 d of exposure in the wet and humid zones. The leaves in the litter bags in the humid and wet zones were processed at a rate (±SD) of 0.005±0.001 d-1 and 0.021±0.001 d-1, respectively. The processing rates of the leaves in the wet zone differed significantly from those observed in the humid zone (t-value, p<0.05). The interchanged litter bags (i.e. from wet to humid zones vice versa) showed that the processing rates of the leaves in the litter bags interchanged from the wet zone to the humid zone was about 200 times lower than that of the leaves retained in the wet zone throughout; fourfold higher in the leaves in the litter bags which were transferred to the wet zone than in those leaves of the litter bags which were retained in the humid zone throughout the experiment. It took approximately 38 months for 90% of the leaf dry mass to be processed in the humid zone whilst it took 4 months for a similar percentage to be processed in the wet zone. It is concluded that the immersion and emersion of leaf litter, which may occur in the wet and humid zones, respectively, are important aspects of the decomposition process which may influence the quantity of nutrients in stream ecosystems.  相似文献

Summary Measurements of litter fall and litter removal by crabs, in conjunction with estimates of litter decay by microbes and tidal export of litter from three high-intertidal mangrove forests were made during a year-long study in tropical northeastern Australia. In forests dominated by Ceriops tagal and Bruguiera exaristata, litter standing stocks remained low on the forest floor (mean 6 g·m-2), although litter fall was high; 822 and 1022 g·m-2·y-1, respectively. Sesarmid crabs removed 580 (Ceriops) and 803 (Bruguiera) g·m-2·y-1, or 71 and 79%, of the total annual litter fall from the forest floor. Relative to the rate of litter removal by crabs, microbial turnover of whole, unshredded litter was insignificant, accounting for <1% of annual litter fall. Export of litter by tides was estimated to remove 194 (Ceriops) and 252 (Bruguiera) g·m-2·y-1 or 24 and 25% of annual litter fall. In a forest dominated by Avicenniamarina, in which an ocypodid crab was more abundant than sesarmids, litter standing stocks were higher (mean 84 g·m-2) and crabs removed less litter; 173 g·m-2·y-1 or 33% of the annual litter fall of 519 g·m-2·y-1. Microbial turnover of intact litter was more important in the Avicennia forest (168 g·m-2·y-1 or 32% of annual litter fall), and tides exported 107 g·m-2·y-1 or 21% of litter production. In areas where sesarmid crabs were absent or rare in Ceriops forests, there were significantly higher standing stocks of litter and slower rates of leaf removal. Taking into account the probable assimilation efficiencies of sesarmid crabs feeding on mangrove leaves, we estimate that in Ceriops and Bruguiera forests leaf processing by crabs turns litter over at >75 times the rate of microbial decay alone, thus facilitating the high sediment bacterial productivity in these forests. The importance of litter processing by crabs increases with height in the intertidal in tropical Australia, in contrast to New World mangrove forests, where the reverse is true.Contribution No. 445 from the Australian Institute of Marine Science  相似文献
