The physiological characteristics of work in cold stores, as a typical artificial cold environment, are reviewed mainly from our various field and experimental studies. There are about 4,000 cold stores in Japan, and 85% of them are kept at temperatures below -20 degrees C. Although the duration of cold exposure per stay in a cold store was very short, forklift workers entered the cold stores very frequently. Cold stress and the decrease in workers' performance were the same as for continuous exposure to cold. Since the peripheral skin temperature of subjects at night is higher than that in the afternoon, they are less likely to feel cold or pain sensation at night. However, there was a marked decrease in rectal temperature and in manual performance. There is an increased risk of both hypothermia and accidents for those who work at night. The cold store workers, however, had adapted to cold through daily repeated cold exposures.  相似文献

目的建立一种模拟肠易激综合征临床症状的动物模型,为相关药物的研究提供实验基础。方法采用孤养附加慢性不可预见性刺激建立IBS模型,每只大鼠受到的刺激因子包括:24h禁水、24h禁食、昼夜颠倒、4℃冰水游泳15min、45℃高温5min、钳尾致痛1min、束缚制动5~8h、高速震荡15min等共8种,每种刺激因子出现5次,共40d。用腹部回撤反射压力阈值(AWR)和排便粒数检测动物的内脏感觉和胃肠运动功能变化;用敞箱行为评分和蔗糖水偏嗜度评价动物神经精神活动变化。结果造模2~3周腹部回撤反射压力阈值明显降低,排便粒数明显增加;造模3~4周模型组动物敞箱实验行为评分和蔗糖水偏嗜度明显降低。造模40d时,上述变化趋势仍存在。结论慢性应激加孤养可诱导动物胃肠运动亢进、内脏感觉致敏和神经精神活动的改变,模拟IBS患者的临床特征,可作为一种有效的IBS动物模型,用于评价相关药物。  相似文献

There have been some reports concerning high complaint rates of fatigue or fatigue-related symptoms including lower back pain in flight attendants (FA). Thus, the relations of working conditions with work stress and fatigue symptoms were studied chiefly by focusing on working hours. From analysis of the time-table and fatigue symptoms of workers on international flights, it was suspected that there were some work-related factors jointly causing serious FA fatigue symptoms; night time and early morning work, long flight hours and a large time difference, thus disturbing their biological rhythms. On domestic flights, showing up early in the morning and debriefing late in the night were often observed together with a highly irregular FA time schedule. By statistical analyses, some factors including long working hours, frequent landing and late debriefing hours were considered to contribute significantly to the high fatigue complaint rates. Thus, it should be emphasized that many countermeasures are necessary to improve FA working conditions including working hours, rest on the airplane (ONO et al., 1990) and sleep during layover, in order to reduce their work stress and fatigue symptoms.  相似文献

Global mean surface temperature has been predicted to increase by 1.8-4°C within this century, accompanied by an increase in the magnitude and frequency of extreme temperature events. Developing rice cultivars better adapted to non-optimal temperatures is essential to increase rice yield in the future and, hence, understanding the molecular response of rice to temperature stress is necessary. In this study, we investigated the proteomic responses of leaves of 24-day-old rice seedlings to sudden temperature changes. Rice seedlings grown at 28/20°C (day/night) were subjected to 3-day exposure to 12/5°C or 20/12°C (day/night) for low-temperature stress, and 36/28°C or 44/36°C (day/night) for high-temperature stress, followed by quantitative label-free shotgun proteomic analysis on biological triplicates of each treatment. Out of over 1100 proteins identified in one or more temperature treatments, more than 400 were found to be responsive to temperature stress. Of these, 43, 126 and 47 proteins were exclusively found at 12/5, 20/12 and 44/36°C (day/night), respectively. Our results showed that a greater change occurs in the rice leaf proteome at 20/12°C (day/night) in comparison to other non-optimal temperature regimes. In addition, our study identified more than 20 novel stress-response proteins.  相似文献

The effect of swimming stress on pineal N-acetyltransferase activity, hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase (HIOMT) activity, and melatonin content was studied during the day and night in adult male rats. At night, elevated pineal activity was suppressed by light exposure before the animals swam. During the day, swimming for 2 hr did not stimulate NAT activity unless the animals were pretreated with desmethylimipramine (DMI), a norepinephrine uptake blocker. Pineal melatonin content after daytime swimming exhibited a weak rise, unless DMI was injected, in which case melatonin levels showed a highly significant increase. Swimming at night caused a greater (compared to daytime levels) increase in NAT activity in both noninjected and DMI-injected rats. Melatonin levels at night were highly significantly stimulated (compared to daytime values) even without pretreatment of the rats with DMI. The greater response of the rat pineal to swimming stress at night may relate either to an increase in the number of beta-adrenergic receptors in the pinealocyte membrane at night or to a reduced capacity of the sympathetic neurons in the pineal to take up excess circulating catecholamines. Pineal HIOMT activity was not influenced by swimming (with or without DMI) either during the day or at night.  相似文献

This study tested the hypothesis that a habit reversal program emphasizing awareness and reduction of masticatory muscle activity would significantly reduce pain in patients diagnosed with chronic temporomandibular disorder (TMD) and would be a competitive alternative to a behaviorally-modified dental intervention. Eight individuals diagnosed with TMD were randomly assigned to a splint therapy or habit reversal group. Patients in the splint group received an interocclusal appliance (splint) fabricated from acrylic and were instructed to wear the splint day and night up to a maximum of 20 h per day. Patients in the habit reversal group were given a pager and instructed to check tooth position and masticatory muscle tension when paged. Paging occurred approximately once every 2 h during the day, but not at night. Both groups were instructed to avoid tooth contact and relax the masticatory muscles during the 4 weeks of active treatment. Outcome data were collected at 1 month and 1 year post-treatment intervals. Pain decreased significantly for both groups and did not differ between groups. Habit reversal may be as effective as a behaviorally-modified splint therapy for TMD-related pain.  相似文献

This article explores why lower-class women in south India in the 1990s were demanding to have childbirth labors induced with oxytocin drugs while rejecting anesthesia. Cultural constructions of women's reproductive power are evoked and reworked in discourses of modernity that explain this preference. Discourses on relationships among gender, pain, and modernity relate to political-economic constraints on hospitals to perpetuate this practice.  相似文献

Water deficit and high temperature often occur simultaneously, but their effects on plants are usually investigated separately. The aim of this study was to test how interactions between water stress and nocturnal warming affect carbon allocation in the perennial grass, Leymus chinensis . Plant biomass, dry mass allocation, 14C partitioning and carbon isotope composition (δ13C) were measured. Severe and extreme water stress during nocturnal warming decreased the allocation of dry mass and 14C partitioning below ground to the roots, but moderate water stress significantly increased the below-ground allocation of dry mass and 14C, especially at the lower night temperature. The δ13C values were more positive at day/night temperatures of 30/20°C than at 30/25°C, and greater in the roots than in the leaves. By plotting the δ13C values of the leaves against the δ13C values of the roots, the slopes of regressions were steeper at low than at high night temperature, also indicating that nocturnal warming reduces carbon allocation below ground to the roots. The results suggest that nocturnal warming may weaken acclimation during water stress in this species by regulating carbon allocation between source and sink organs.  相似文献

In order to maximize their fitness, organisms in seasonal environments rely on external cues to optimally time their life‐history stages. One of the most important zeitgeber to time reproduction is the photoperiod, but further environmental cues are assessed to fine‐tune reproduction due to year‐to‐year variation in environmental conditions. However, in urbanized environments, the pervasive artificial light at night has altered the natural signal of light and darkness. Accordingly, artificial light at night was repeatedly shown to affect avian reproductive physiology and to advance seasonal reproduction in birds. However, these experiments were mainly conducted in the absence of further environmental cues to facilitate the investigation of the mechanisms which are still poorly understood. Here, we investigate whether the endocrine system of free‐ranging European blackbirds (Turdus merula) correlates with the amount of artificial light at night along a rural to urban gradient while the birds still encounter complementary environmental cues including seasonal variation in day length and temperature. Testosterone and estrone were assessed as metabolites in fecal samples and corticosterone in blood from mist‐netted blackbirds. We demonstrate that seasonal fluctuations in abiotic factors, individual conditions, but also light at night affect the reproductive and stress physiology of wild European blackbirds. Elevated artificial night light intensities were significantly positively correlated with corticosterone and negatively with female estrone levels. No effects of artificial light were found for testosterone levels. Our results suggest that female blackbirds in particular perceive even low levels of artificial light at night as a weak but chronic stressor that interacts with the hypothalamic‐pituitary‐gonadal axis and leads to a reduced secretion of reproductive hormones. These findings point out that the impacts of light pollution are diverse and we only slowly disentangle its multiple effects on physiology, ecology, and biodiversity.  相似文献

The study aimed to test whether night-time transpiration provides any potential benefit to wheat plants which are subjected to salt stress. Hydroponically grown wheat plants were grown at four levels of salt stress (50, 100, 150, and 200 mM NaCl) for 5–8 days prior to harvest (day 14–18). Salt stress caused large decreases in transpiration and leaf elongation rates during day and night. The quantitative relation between the diurnal use of water for transpiration and leaf growth was comparatively little affected by salt. Night-time transpirational water loss occurred predominantly through stomata in support of respiration. Diurnal gas exchange and leaf growth were functionally linked to each other through the provision of resources (carbon, energy) and an increase in leaf surface area. Diurnal rates of water use associated with leaf cell expansive growth were highly correlated with the water potential of the xylem, which was dominated by the tension component. The tissue-specific expression level of nine candidate aquaporin genes in elongating and mature leaf tissue was little affected by salt stress or day/night changes. Growing plants under conditions of reduced night-time transpirational water loss by increasing the relative humidity (RH) during the night to 95% had little effect on the growth response to salt stress, nor was the accumulation of Na+ and Cl in shoot tissue altered. We conclude that night-time gas exchange supports the growth in leaf area over a 24 h day/night period. Night-time transpirational water loss neither decreases nor increases the tolerance to salt stress in wheat.  相似文献

There is considerable evidence showing that night work is associated with increased morbidity, but only a few studies have focused on its relation to mortality. This study investigates the relationship between the type of working-time arrangement (weekly night work/daytime work) and total and cause-specific mortality among men and women. The data consist of a representative working conditions survey of Finnish employees conducted in 1984 (2286 men/2216 women), which has been combined with register-based follow-up data from Statistics Finland covering the years 1985-2008. In the 1984 survey, the employees were asked if they worked during the night (23:00-06:00 h) and if so, how often. In this study, the authors compare employees who worked at night (121 men/89 women) to daytime employees who did not do night work (1325 men/1560 women). The relative risk of death was examined by Cox proportional hazards analyses adjusted for background (age, level of education, family situation, and county), health (longstanding illness, pain symptoms, smoking status, and psychological symptoms), and work-related factors (weekly working hours, physical and psychological demands, demands of learning at work, and perceived job insecurity). Female employees working at night had a 2.25-fold higher risk of mortality than female dayworkers (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.20-4.20) after adjustment for background and health- and work-related factors. In addition to total mortality, night work was also associated with tumor mortality. Female night workers had a 2.82-fold higher risk of tumor mortality than female dayworkers (95% CI 1.20-6.65) in the adjusted model. Among men, no such significant association was observed. The present study indicated that female night workers had a higher risk of both total and tumor mortality compared to female daytime employees. Additional research on the potential factors and mechanisms behind the association between night work and mortality is required.  相似文献

利用人工环境控制室对盆栽冬小麦 (品种 :‘济南 17’和‘鲁麦 2 1’) (Triticumaestivumcv.‘Ji′nan17’and‘Lumai2 1’) 分别在子粒灌浆前期、中期和后期进行了 2 5℃ / 35℃ (夜 /昼 ) 的高温胁迫处理, 以生长在 2 0℃ / 30℃ (夜 /昼 ) 环境中的小麦为对照, 研究了灌浆期不同阶段高温胁迫对小麦产量和品质的影响。结果发现 :1) 子粒蛋白质积累速率在高温处理期间显著提高 (p<0.0 5 ), 但高值持续期缩短, 并最终造成植株氮素积累量减少, 氮素收获指数降低 (p <0.0 5 ) 。 2 ) 小麦蛋白质的组成和品质对不同灌浆阶段的响应存在显著差异, 前期高温胁迫导致麦谷蛋白 /醇溶蛋白的比值以及麦谷蛋白大聚合体 (GMP) 含量增加, 标志蛋白质和淀粉品质的湿面筋含量升高、沉降值增加、膨胀势和高峰粘度等指标也显著提高 ;灌浆中期高温却导致上述指标降低 ;灌浆后期高温在造成粒重减小、产量降低和淀粉品质下降的同时, 却有利于蛋白质含量的提高。 3) 小麦淀粉积累的形成与蛋白质品质的形成是两个既相互联系又相互独立的过程, 高温条件下子粒蛋白质含量的升高是淀粉积累量减少造成的。  相似文献

Diurnal changes in basal cortisol levels and stress reactivity were assessed in male and female squirrel monkeys. Blood samples were collected at four-hour intervals throughout the day and night in the mating and nonmating seasons. Basal cortisol levels in females were similar in both seasons, but males tended to have higher cortisol levels during the mating season, especially at night. For both sexes, cortisol secretion was highest between 0400 and 0800 preceding the onset of the diurnal activity period. Assessment of cortisol responses following brief handling and anesthesia indicated that stress responses were relatively stable across the year, but cortisol increments were slightly higher in the nonmating season. Cortisol levels post-stress were generally related to prior baseline values. Thus, a knowledge of biorhythmic changes in basal hormone levels was important for predicting hormone levels after acute stressors. Males also underwent marked seasonal variation in their basal testosterone levels, which markedly altered the nature of their testosterone responses 30-minutes poststress. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Diurnal variation in phloem sap composition has a strong infuence on aphid performance.The sugar-rich phloem sap serves as the sole diet for aphids and a suite of physiological mechanisms and behaviors allowv them to tolerate the high osmotic stress.Here,we tested the hypothesis that night-time feeding by aphids is a behavior that takes advantage of the low sugar diet in the night to compensate for osmotic stress incurred while feeding on high sugar diet during the day.Using the electrical penetration graph(EPG)technique.we examined the eiects of diurmal rhythm on feeding behaviors of bird cherry-oat aphid(Rhopalosiphurm padi L.)on wheat.A strong diurmal rhythm in aphids as indicated by the presence of a cyclical pattern of expression in a core clock gene did not impact aphid feeding and similar feeding behaviors were observed during day and night.The major difference observed between day and night feeding was that aphids spent significantly longer time in phloem salivation during the night compared to the day.In contrast,aphid hydration was reduced at the end of the day-time feeding compared to end of the night-time fepding.Gene expression analysis of R.padi osmoregulatory genes indicated that sugar break down and water transport into the aphid gut was reduced at night.These data suggest that while diumal variation occurs in phloem sap composition,aphids use night time feeding to overcome the high osmotic stress incurred while feeding on sugar-rich phloem sap during the day.  相似文献

The heart rate and systolic and diastolic blood pressures (HR, BPs, and BPd, respectively) were measured in controllers of electricity distribution at the beginning and end of 12-h shifts. Hemodynamic parameters were calculated. The stress was assessed with a five-point scale. It was found that the stress of mental work of the operator type activated the functioning of the cardiovascular system (CVS). The CVS reaction was more pronounced and interactive during the first shifts in each block than during the second shifts. The CVS reaction was more pronounced and interactive during day shifts than during night shifts. An increase in stress during the first day shifts was accompanied by a decrease in HR and an increase in minimum BPd during the shift, in the absence of a BPs reaction. The minimum levels of all three parameters (HR, BPs, and BPd) were increased during the first night shifts, which indicates that the effectiveness of CVS activation in the nighttime was decreased as compared to the daytime. The BPd is specifically sensitive to the work stress of controllers: its reaction to an increase in stress is classic during the first shifts and inverted during the second night shifts. This reflects exhaustion of adaptation reserves. The HR showed attenuated reactivity during the daytime, but not during the nighttime, when it reacted in the classic way.  相似文献

The effects of time of day and water temperature on the acute physiological stress response were investigated in young-of-the-year green sturgeon (Acipenser medirostris). The response to a 1-min air-emersion stressor was assessed during the day (08.00 h) and at night (20.00 h), as well as after acclimation to either 11 degrees C or 19 degrees C. Blood samples were collected prior to stress and at several times after exposure to the stressor, and plasma concentrations of cortisol, lactate, and glucose were determined. The magnitudes of cortisol (19.1 ng ml(-1) vs. 4.9 ng ml(-1)) and lactate (190.6 mg l(-1) vs. 166.7 mg l(-1)) were significantly higher in fish stressed at night when compared with the day. There were no significant differences in glucose levels between time periods. Although, acclimation temperature did not affect peak cortisol concentrations (56.7 and 50.3 ng ml(-1) at 11 degrees C and 19 degrees C, respectively), the duration of the response was significantly extended at 11 degrees C. Post-stressor lactate increases were similar between temperature groups, but at 11 degrees C post-stressor glucose levels were significantly increased through 6 h, suggesting stressor-induced glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis or decreased glucose utilization. These data demonstrate that the physiological stress response in green sturgeon is modified by both time of day and temperature.  相似文献

Identifying lipids that experience coordinated metabolism during heat stress would provide information regarding lipid dynamics under stress conditions and assist in developing heat‐tolerant wheat varieties. We hypothesized that co‐occurring lipids, which are up‐regulated or down‐regulated together through time during heat stress, represent groups that can be explained by coordinated metabolism. Wheat plants (Triticum aestivum L.) were subjected to 12 days of high day and/or night temperature stress, followed by a 4‐day recovery period. Leaves were sampled at four time points, and 165 lipids were measured by electrospray ionization‐tandem mass spectrometry. Correlation analysis of lipid levels in 160 leaf samples from each of two wheat genotypes revealed 13 groups of lipids. Lipids within each group co‐occurred through the high day and night temperature stress treatments. The lipid groups can be broadly classified as groups containing extraplastidic phospholipids, plastidic glycerolipids, oxidized glycerolipids, triacylglycerols, acylated sterol glycosides and sterol glycosides. Current knowledge of lipid metabolism suggests that the lipids in each group co‐occur because they are regulated by the same enzyme(s). The results suggest that increases in activities of desaturating, oxidizing, glycosylating and acylating enzymes lead to simultaneous changes in levels of multiple lipid species during high day and night temperature stress in wheat.  相似文献

Summary Opuntia polyacantha was collected from the shortgrass prairie in Colorado. Carbon dioxide and water vapor exchange was monitored in plants pretreated and analyzed under cool temperatures (20/15°C) and warm temperatures (35/15°C). Well watered plants under a 35/15 thermoperiod supported the fixation of atmospheric CO2 during the night, early morning, and late afternoon. Plants under a 20/15 thermoperiod exhibited CO2 uptake only during the afternoon. The fixation of CO2 at night could be stimulated or induced by decreasing the night temperature. Plants from which water was withheld two or four weeks showed a decline in CO2 fixation with the uptake at night exhibiting the greatest sensitivity. Under conditions of water stress the enhancement of CO2 uptake at night by cool night temperatures was largely lost. Plants water stressed for 4 weeks recovered rapidly upon rewatering under warm or cool temperatures. Rates of CO2 fixation were comparable to well watered plants within 24 h. The effects of temperature and water stress on gas exchange are compared to the in situ growth pattern of O. polyacantha and contrasted with the regulation of gas exchange observed in C3 and C4 grasses of the shortgrass prairie.This research was supported by funds from NSF Grants BMS 74-07894, GB-31862X, and GB-41233X  相似文献

The purpose was to reveal the effects of stress on the parameters of cognitive performance and cardiovascular system activities in controllers working 12-hour shifts. Sixteen controllers were studied, and altogether 384 subject observations were acquired. A 5-point scale was used to estimate the perceived level of stress experienced by the controllers. Increased heart rate and heart activity-related haemodynamic parameters were found with an increase in perceived stress. Decreases found in heart rate, circulatory minute volume, and Kerdo's vegetative index over the shift became less pronounced with increased stress. Better attention was found under the average level of stress that was found on the first day shift. An effect of stress on short-term memory was not revealed. As a whole, the most pronounced changes were found during the first day shift and less pronounced changes appeared during the first night shift. Effects of stress were not found in changes of the studied parameters during the second consecutive day or night shift. Thus, increased stress causes the activation of some psychophysiological functions (attention and cardiac activity) that are indispensable for high work efficiency under increased production demands. However, the necessary activation could not be maintained during the second consecutive 12-hour shifts, probably because of accumulated fatigue, and also night work. On the other hand, too high stress may lead to the excessive activation of cardiac activity and deterioration of attention.  相似文献

The psychological stress of competition is a powerful stimulus affecting numerous hormones, which in turn change how pain is perceived. This study investigated whether a kumdo (kendo) team competition may be related to changes in hormones and pain. Seventeen healthy male kumdo practitioners participated in this experiment. Pain experiments were conducted by applying noxious stimuli with a thermal stimulator 10 min before a kumdo competition and 30 min post-competition. Serum testosterone, cortisol, beta-endorphin levels, pain thresholds, pain ratings at 48 °C and during blood sampling (sampling pain), anxiety, blood pressure, and heart rate were measured pre- and post-competition. Anxiety, pain threshold, testosterone/cortisol ratio, and blood pressure were significantly higher pre-competition compared to post-competition, while cortisol and pain ratings were significantly lower pre-competition than post-competition. There were significant correlations between the number of previous competitions and testosterone levels both pre-competition and post-competition. In pre-competition measurements, sampling pain increased with an increase in systolic blood pressure, heart rate, and beta-endorphins, and a decrease in age. In post-competition measurements, sampling pain increased with an increase in diastolic blood pressure and a decrease in testosterone levels. These results indicate that severe psychological pre-competition stress was associated with reduced pain ratings, perhaps in order to improve athletic performance. This also suggests that competitors may be at risk of potential injury due to changes in pain perception, and careful consideration should be taken to avoid potential injury before and during competition.  相似文献
