Several sexually dimorphic characters of the anal-fin complex in the mormyrid fish, Mormyrus rume proboscirostris, assist during courtship when the male envelops the female's anal fin with its own to form a common spawning pouch (anal-fin reflex). We found that developmental growth and seasonally cycling gonadal activity selectively affect their expression. The structures defining the anal fin undergo a permanent sexually dimorphic transformation at a time when ripe spermatozoa first appear in the testis of young males. However, the expression of a dorsally directed indentation of the posterior ventral body wall, affecting the dorsal margin of the anal fin, appeared to be more plastic as it correlated with the gonadosomatic index, that is, testis size. We surmised that this indentation is influenced by cyclic anabolic action on muscle involved with the execution of the anal-fin reflex.  相似文献

The trade‐offs involved in allocating carotenoid pigments and food to healing and regrowing damaged caudal fin tissue v . other functions were examined in guppies Poecilia reticulata , a species in which females prefer males that display larger amounts of carotenoids in their skin. The guppies were derived from four natural populations in Trinidad that differed in resource availability but not predation intensity. Carotenoids, food and site of origin did not affect either absolute or relative fin regrowth, which suggested that fin regeneration in guppies was not constrained by carotenoid availability. It is possible that carotenoid intake influences fin regeneration in the presence of natural stressors such as predators. There was a significant negative interaction between food level in the laboratory and resource availability in the field: males from low‐resource‐availability sites regrew more fin tissue when raised on the high food level, and males from high‐resource‐availability sites regrew more fin tissue when raised on the low food level. The direction of this interaction runs counter to theoretical expectations.  相似文献

The pectoral muscle index ( I PM)( I PM = 100 M PM M−1, where M PM and M are the pectoral muscle and body masses, respectively) fin‐area and fin ray length were studied over a year in male and female three‐spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus from a marine population (Öresund, Sweden) kept under simulated natural light and temperature conditions. A castration‐replacement experiment was used to test androgen effects on the I PM, fin‐area and fin ray length. Non‐breeding males were castrated or sham‐operated in winter ( i.e . the fish had low levels of androgens). Castrated control and sham‐operated fish were implanted with empty Silastic capsules and castrated groups with capsules containing the androgens testosterone or 11‐ketoandrostenedione into the abdominal cavity. The experiment was terminated after 41 days, when the controls had matured. No morphological differences were found in pectoral fins between sexes during the year, except during the peak breeding season (May), where females showed larger fin‐area and longer fin ray in length compared to males. No effects of androgens treatment or of castration on pectoral fin‐area or fin ray length was observed. Breeding and non‐breeding males showed higher I PM compared to females. The lower I PM in females than in males could not be explained by the larger gonads in the former alone, as a sex difference in I PM was still present after deduction of the ovaries from the female body mass. The I PM was higher in sham‐operated compared to castrated fish. No effects of androgens treatment on I PM was observed.  相似文献

A new chimaerid species closely related to Hydrolagus pallidus is described from 13 specimens captured on the Portuguese continental slope (north‐east Atlantic) by commercial longliners at depths of c . 1600 m. The new species is large‐bodied with a rose to light brown body colouration. Hydrolagus lusitanicus n.sp. presents a combination of external morphological characters that allow it to be clearly differentiated from its congeners, in particular, the ratios of pectoral fin length: pectoral fin width and pelvic fin length: pelvic fin width; in having a serrated posterior edge of the dorsal spine; a high number of ridges in the dental plates. Additionally in males, there are differences on the shape and number of hooks in the frontal tenacula, on the number of spines in the prepelvic tenacula and on the length of the pectoral fin margin.  相似文献

Adult males of African weakly discharging electric fish (family: Mormyridae) are distinguished from juveniles and adult females by a dorsally directed indentation of the posterior ventral body wall and by massive bone expansion of the bases of a select number of anal-fin rays. These sexually dimorphic structures seem to facilitate the anal-fin reflex that is displayed during courtship when the male envelopes its anal fin around the female's to form a common spawning pouch. Expanded bone could provide additional surface for muscle attachment and thus assist in part with the courtship sequence. Based on the fact that the expression of the male sexually dimorphic electric organ discharge (EOD) is under androgen control, and that the female EOD can be masculinized through testosterone administration, we hypothesized that androgens should also drive anal-fin ray bone expansion in male mormyrids and equally effect male-like changes in treated juveniles and adult females. Exogenous androgen treatment (17α-methyltestosterone) of adult femaleBrienomyrus nigerresulted in a male-like EOD, and male-typical structural transformations (body wall indentation and anal-fin ray bone expansion). Some of these changes were immediate and receded following hormone withdrawal (EOD), while others developed more slowly and were apparently permanent (indentation and bone formation). 17α-Methyltestosterone administration affected only those targets in females that are normally involved in the male's reproductive behavior, i.e., its courtship signal (EOD) and two morphological features (body-wall indentation and bone expansion). A new species of bitterling, Acheilognathus striatus sp. nov., is described on the basis of 57 specimens collected from the lower Yangtze River in Jiangxi Province, China. It can be distinguished from all congeners by the following combined characters: a pair of relatively long barbels, slightly longer than half of eye diameter; dorsal fin with three simple and 8–9 branched fin rays, anal fin with three simple and 7–8 branched fin rays; a black longitudinal stripe on body from the base of caudal peduncle, distinctly reaching anteriorly to the vertical line from the origin of dorsal fin, broader in males than in females; a scale distance between the longitudinal stripe and lateral line below the origin of dorsal fin; dorsal and anal fin margined with black band in males.  相似文献

The annual reproductive cycle of the dragonet,Repomucenus valenciennei, from Tokyo Bay, Japan, was studied by analysis of seasonal trends in gonadosomatic indices and histological observations of gonads. Sexual dimorphism in the growth of several body parts relative to standard length (SL) and changes in color pattern of the first dorsal fin with growth were also investigated. The spawning season lasted from spring (April [1991] or February [1992]) to autumn (October) with two spawning peaks, in spring and autumn. In spring, only one-year-old (age 1+) fish spawned, age 0+ females not spawning until autumn, at which time they had reached age 1+. Likewise, histological observations of males indicated that testes had reached full maturity by 80 mm SL (age 1+). The minimum mature size of females was estimated as 60 mm SL. In males 45–80 mm SL, the first spine of the first dorsal fin, last ray of the second dorsal fin, last ray of the anal fin, and caudal fin ray showed strongly positive allometry, indicating rapid growth of these structures relative to SL. Subsequently, their growth returned to an isometric pattern in males>80 mm SL. In females, on the other hand, the same body parts showed slightly positive allometry throughout their growth. The color pattern on the first dorsal fin also changed in males 45–80 mm SL.  相似文献

A new blind loach of Triplophysa Rendahl 1933 was collected from a subterranean pool in a cave at Wulong County, Chongqing City, China, in November 2002. The new species, named Triplophysa rosa sp. nov., can be distinguished from its congeners by the following unique characters: eyes vestigial; 9 branched dorsal‐fin rays; 12 branched pectoral‐fin rays; 7 branched pelvic‐fin rays; 6 branched anal‐fin rays; 7 + 7 branched caudal‐fin rays; distal margin of dorsal‐fin concave; tip of pelvic‐fin surpasses vertical level of anus; caudal‐fin deeply forked; whole body scaleless and colourless.  相似文献

A new species of the bitterling genus Acheilognathus, Acheilognathus changtingensis sp. nov., was recently discovered from Changting County in Hanjiang River, Fujian Province, Southeastern China. It can be diagnosed by the following combination of characters: dorsal fin with three simple and 15 (occasionally 14) branched fin rays, anal fin with three simple and 12 (occasionally 11) branched fin rays; dorsal fin pale and anal fin slightly pale; white spots on anal-fin rays forming a transverse band, and anal fin margined with white band in males. Its unique characters are the many dispersed black spots on the dorsal, anal, pelvic, caudal fins, and on the head. Using the mitochondrial cytochrome Jb gene as a molecular marker, we reconstructed phylogenetic trees of A. changtingensis sp. nov. and other species in Acheilognathus to confirm its taxonomic status and study its speciation. Analyses of both morphological and molecular data consistently indicated the taxonomic status of the present new species. The results also show that A. changtingensis sp. nov. and Acheilognathus macropterus are sister species that diverged about 14.50 MYA by geographical isolation.  相似文献

A new bitterling, Rhodeus pseudosericeus sp. nov., is described on the basis of 31 specimens from five localities included in the Namhan River system, South Korea. The new species is distinguished from other Rhodeus species by the following combination of characters: branched dorsal fin rays 9–10 (mode 9); branched anal fin rays 9–11 (mode 10); longest simple ray of dorsal fin strong and stiff, distally segmented; pelvic fin rays i, 6–7; iris of males blackish; dorsal and anal fins of males grayish in breeding season; karyotype with 2n = 48 (8m + 20sm + 20st). Rhodeus pseudosericeus sp. nov. is similar to Rhodeus sericeus sericeus in the number of pelvic fin and branched dorsal fin rays and the melanophores present on the dorsal fin membrane, but differs from the latter in having a greater body depth, more branched anal fin rays, fewer vertebrae, a lower number of scales in the lateral series, and differing male nuptial coloration. Sexual dimorphism in growth of conventional morphometric characters was investigated in juveniles and young adults (size range: 31 to 91 mm) of Oreochromis mossambicus . A closely associated set of traits was identified that shows sexually dimorphic growth, which was positively allometric in the males. These traits correspond to two different morphological complexes: jaw structure and anal/dorsal fins. The best sex discriminators among this set of traits were premaxilla width, anal fin height and snout length. These findings may be explained in terms of intra– and inter–sexual selection acting together and favouring males with strong and large mouths and high dorsal and anal fins, traits that are important in agonistic displays (jaw and fins), fighting and nest digging (jaw).  相似文献

Acrossocheilus spinifer sp. nov. is described from the river basins in Fujian Province and the Han Jiang basin in Guangdong Province, south China. It is one of the barred Acrossocheilus species sharing five or six vertical bars on the flanks, with each bar being two scales in width. Acrossocheilus spinifer sp. nov. is morphologically most similar to Acrossocheilus wenchowensis , but distinguished from it by: a colour pattern of all vertical bars extending ventrally to the second scale row below the lateral line, and having the second bar placed posterior to the base of the last simple dorsal‐fin ray, a blunt snout; and a stout, last simple dorsal‐fin ray. Acrossocheilus spinifer sp. nov. resembles Acrossocheilus kreyenbergii and Acrossocheilus stenotaeniatus with which it shares a stout, last simple dorsal‐fin ray with a serrated posterior edge, but is separated from both species by having a narrow median interruption in the lower lip, a lower jaw fully covered by the lower lip when viewed ventrally and the second vertical bar placed posterior to the base of the last simple dorsal‐fin ray. The absence of a longitudinal stripe extending along the lateral line on the flanks in males readily distinguishes A. spinifer sp. nov. from four other species, namely Acrossocheilus fasciatus , Acrossocheilus paradoxus, Acrossocheilus parallens , and Acrossocheilus jishouensis .  相似文献

A new species of the catfish genus Centromochlus (Auchenipteridae, Centromochlinae) is described. The new species is diagnosed by having numerous dark rounded blotches over the body and fins, dorsal‐fin spine with serrations anteriorly and smooth posteriorly, anal fin of mature males with three unbranched and seven branched rays, anterior nuchal plate absent and posterior nuchal plate not extended ventrally. The new species is described from a small stream in the Estação Ecológica Serra Geral de Tocantins, a natural reserve in the centre of the Brazilian Cerrado, close to the watershed between the Rio Tocantins and the Rio São Francisco basins. The new species is possibly the sister taxon to the recently described Centromochlus meridionalis from the upper Rio Tapajós. Those two species share with Centromochlus perugiae, from the upper Amazon and upper Paraguay, derived features associated with the modified anal fin in sexually mature males.  相似文献

Synopsis Two new species of the genus Oreoglanis, O. jingdongensis and O. immaculatus are described from the Mekong and Salween River basins, respectively, of Yunnan Province, China. Oreoglanis jingdongensis can be distinguished from other Oreoglanis species by the following characters: lower lip with a distinct median notch, posterior edge smooth or with indentations; caudal fin lunate and lower lobe longer than upper lobe. Oreoglanis immaculatus can be distinguished from its congeners by the following features: lower lip with a strait median notch, posterior edge with indentations; caudal fin emarginate and lower lobe about the same length as upper lobe, having no yellow patches on sides of body below adipose fin.  相似文献

A new species of Hyphessobrycon is described from the Rio Juma, a tributary of the lower Rio Aripuanã–Rio Madeira basin, Amazonas, Brazil. Hyphessobrycon platyodus can be distinguished from its congeners by the: presence of an elongated dorsal fin in adult males, 25–28 branched anal‐fin rays and absence of dark blotches from the dorsal fin and caudal peduncle. The presence of multicuspid teeth in species of Characidae and its relation with feeding habits are briefly commented on.  相似文献

The biology of the bigeye grenadier Macrourus holotrachys caught as by‐catch in the Patagonian toothfish Dissostichus eleginoides longline fishery conducted around South Georgia was investigated to improve data available for fisheries management. Age estimates suggest that M. holotrachys is a moderately slow growing species ( K  = 0·10), reaching ages of >30 years and attaining total lengths ( L T) >80 cm ( L  = 33). The size at which 50% of females had started to mature ( L int50) for M. holotrachys was 21 cm pre‐anal length ( L PA) and occurred at c . 9 years old. Estimates of natural mortality and Pauly's growth performance index were found to be low ( M  = 0·09 and Φ = 2·82 respectively). Gonad maturity stage was described from macroscopic and histological investigation. Mature ovaries had oocytes at all developmental stages with between 22 and 55% likely to be spawned each year. Absolute fecundity ranged from 22 000 to 260 000 eggs and was positively correlated with both pre‐anal length and mass. A highly skewed sex ratio of 32 : 1, females : males, was found for specimens caught by longlines but not for a small sample of shallower trawl‐caught specimens. It is suggested that females are far more susceptible to longline capture than males. Macrourus holotrachys is a bentho‐pelagic predator and scavenger that feeds on a wide range of fishes and invertebrates. The fish are long lived, slow‐growing species typical of deep‐water grenadiers; fisheries management strategies should reflect their probable susceptibility to overfishing.  相似文献

Male longear sunfish, Lepomis megalotis , have longer opercular flaps than females, and females are known to prefer males with longer flaps, suggesting that these exaggerated structures serve as sexual ornaments. We tested the hypothesis that opercular flap length is associated with body condition and is therefore potentially an honest indicator of male quality. Opercular flaps grew significantly faster than pelvic fin spines, a non-sexually selected trait, regardless of diet treatment, suggesting an advantage to having fast-growing opercular flaps. Growth indices (opercular flap growth divided by pelvic fin spine growth) of males fed a larger ration were greater than those of males fed a smaller ration, although the difference was marginally non-significant. We also tested for an effect of opercular flap length on resource holding power by manipulating flap length on pairs of males matched for body length. In an experiment where opercular flaps were clipped to different lengths, only longer original (unmanipulated) flap length was associated with a significantly greater frequency of dominance. In a corollary experiment where opercular flaps were artificially lengthened, the abnormally long-flapped males were dominant significantly more often than the 'normal' males given transparent extensions. These results indicate that the opercular flap length of male longear sunfish may serve as an honest indicator of male quality and may be used to assess the resource holding power of rival males.  相似文献

A new species of spinous loach, Cobitis shikokuensis, is described based on 297 specimens from Shikoku Island, Japan. The new species was formerly known as the Shikoku group of Cobitis takatsuensis. It can be distinguished from other species of Cobitis and closely related genera by a combination of the following characters: dorsal fin with 6 branched soft rays; anal fin with 5 branched soft rays; one brownish streak across eye from the tip of nose, no streak on cheek; a black spot smaller than eye diameter near the dorsal corner of the caudal fin base; 3–5 small brownish speckles on ventral side of caudal peduncle; high caudal peduncle with well-developed fleshy keels on dorsal and ventral side; a lamina circularis at base of dorsal part of pectoral fin absent; first branched soft ray of pectoral fin broad in males; pectoral soft rays widely branched from the approximate midpoint; last anal fin ray with 2 elements; interorbital width 11.2–17.1% of head length.  相似文献

Malakichthys Döderlein, 1883, comprises seven species: type species Malakichthys griseus Döderlein 1883, from southern Japan to north‐western Australia; Malakichthys barbatus Yamanoue & Yoseda, 2001 , from southern Japan, the South China Sea, north‐western Australia and the Coral Sea; Malakichthys elegans Matsubara & Yamaguti, 1943 , from southern Japan south to the Arafura Sea; Malakichthys levis Yamanoue & Matsuura, 2001 , from northern Australia; Malakichthys mochizuki Yamanoue & Matsuura, 2001 , from the Coral Sea; Malakichthys similis sp. nov. from the Bohol Sea, Philippines; Malakichthys wakiyae Jordan & Hubbs, 1925 , from southern Japan and Taiwan. Species of Malakichthys are very similar to each other in general appearance but are distinguishable by spination on the lower jaw, features of the proximal‐middle radial of the first anal‐fin pterygiophore, the number of anal‐fin soft rays and body depth.  相似文献
