Summary Observations of a selected area in the forest zone of south western Nigeria indicate that the distribution ofMacrotermes bellicosus (Smeathman) andMacrotermes subhyalinus (Rambur) mounds are mainly affected by the drainage conditions of the soils along a toposequence. Higher number of mounds are observed on the better drained soils, ranging from 35.4 to 17.2 mounds/ha covering an area of respectively 0.84 and 0.10 per cent. The shallow and poorly drained soils show lower mound density (<1 mound/ha). The mound soil bears close resemblance to the subsoil, has higher clay content, lower pH, organic C, CEC and extractable P, but higher P retentio than the adjacent surface soil. Growth of maize (Zea mays L.) and soybean (Glycine max. (L.) Merrill) was poorer in the mound soil than in the surface soil. The problem of increased soil variability when large number of mounds are encountered in the field is discussed.  相似文献

Summary The nest structure and colony cycle of a population of Allegheny mound ants,Formica exsectoides, were examined in central Michigan. The dispersion pattern of mounds was random. Nest structure and presence of brood were primarily determined by excavation of twenty-three nests over three intervals from June through September. Additional excavations of five nests in 1990 and ten nests in 1991 provided further details on nest structure and colony cycle. Most galleries occurred within the mound and upper 30 cm of soil, but some activity reached depths of 100 to 270 cm. Depth of nests showed little correlation with external measurements of height and diameter. Immature stages were recovered from two strata: the upper 20 cm of nest and mound and the lowest nest depths. Alate sexual forms were found in or near the mound in July, and numerous dealate queens were collected in September from peripheral galleries near the soil surface.  相似文献

During a field study at the Río Blanco in northeastern Peru between June and September 1990, moustached tamarins (Saguinus mystax) were observed to feed on soil material on three different occasions. Soil was taken directly from bare spots of surface soil (two observations) and from the broken mound of leaf-cutting ants (Atta sp.; one observation). Exposed surface soil is rare throughout the study area. Geochemical analyses of the soils that were consumed showed elevated concentrations of several elements in the ant mound sample compared to the other two soil samples. The most likely hypothesis for the function of soil feeding in moustached tamarins is that it serves in mineral supplementation.  相似文献

Nest structure in ants is often designed to optimize the colony’s ability to thermoregulate, and this specialization is most highly developed in mound-building ant species. Solenopsis invicta invest a large amount of energy in building mounds and transporting their brood up and down in their nests as a means of thermoregulation. Because few ant species build true mounds, we wanted to determine the effectiveness of these mounds in harvesting solar heat as well as to distinguish what factors (temperature vs. circadian rhythm) govern where fire ants place their brood in the mound and when they place it. We measured temperature patterns in the mound over several days at different depths and under different conditions (under direct sunlight or shade), and then conducted a series of field experiments to manipulate the orientation and time of heating. On cool mornings in spring or fall, surface temperatures of the mound rise at the fastest rate on the side receiving the most direct sunlight (usually the south side). This heating causes a temperature gradient through different depths in the mound, and shows little difference from outside ground temperature at a depth greater than ~40 cm inside the nest. In the morning, fire ants move their brood up into the mound on the side most directly heated, and when temperatures exceed optimal (~32°C) they move their brood down the temperature gradient to lower depths in the nest. In addition to this, mound temperature does not only increase due to direct sunlight, but temperature also increases higher than ground temperatures when the mound is in the shade due to its low specific heat. Experiments in which sunlight was mirrored to the normally shaded side of the mound, or when mounds were heated at night, revealed that S. invicta primarily track temperature patterns and do not rely on behavioral habits or circadian rhythms for the thermoregulatory transport of their brood. When mounds were shaded, S. invicta brood was evenly distributed directly under the surface of the mound rather than aggregating towards a specific side. The fire ant mound is important for thermoregulation because, compared to moundless subterranean nests, it absorbs heat more rapidly both in direct sunlight and shady conditions. Temperature tracking within the nest is key to understanding thermoregulatory placement of fire ant brood, as well as insight into the production of sexual brood and reproduction. In the semi-arid woodland of eastern Australia, soil mounds are often associated with fallen mulga (Acacia aneura) trees. Measurements of the physical and chemical properties of the soils in these mounds compared with surrounding soils, together with differences in herbage growth responses, indicate that these mounds are fertile patches, with possible importance as habitats for soil fauna and as refugia for a range of organisms during drought. The mound soil material may accumulate by fluvial, aeolian or rain-splash deposition about the fallen log, however, some of the mound material was derived from termite feeding gallery structures. The surface feeding gallery material may be comprised of soil particles from within the mound or from tunnels and storage galleries below the mound, and probably depends on the termite species.  相似文献

Summary Liassic sponge mounds of the central High Atlas (Rich area, northern Morocco) have a stratigraphic range from the Lower/Upper Sinemurian boundary interval up to the lower parts of the Lower Pliensbachian (Carixian). The base of Liassic sponge mounds consists of a transgressive discontinuity, i.e., a condensed section of microbioclastic wackestones with firm- and hardgrounds, ferruginous stromatolites, sponge spicules and ammonites. The top of Liassic sponge mounds is an irregular palaeorelief covered by cherty marl-limestone rhythmites, namely hemipelagic spicular wackestones with radiolaria. In the Rich area, section Foum Tillicht, the sponge mound succession has a total thickness of about 250 meters. Within this succession we distinguished between three mound intervals. The lower mound interval shows only small, meter-scale sponge mounds consisting of boundstones with lyssakine sponges, commensalicTerebella and the problematicumRadiomura. This interval forms a shallowing-upward sequence culminating in a bedded facies withTubiphytes, calcareous algae (Palaeodasycladus), sponge lithoclasts, coated grains, and thin rims of marine cement. The middle mound interval is aggradational with decametric mounds and distinct thrombolitic textures and reefal cavities. The mound assemblage here consists of hexactinellid sponges, lithistid demosponges, non-rigid demosponges,Radiomura, Serpula (Dorsoserpula), Terebella, encrusting bryozoa, and minor contributions by calcareous sponges, and excavating sponges (typeAka). Thrombolites are dendrolitic and may reach sizes of several tens of centimeters, similar to the maximum size of siliceous sponges. The upper mound interval appears retrogradational and geometries change upsection from mound shapes to flat lenses and level-bottom, biostromal sponge banks. The biotic assemblage is similar to that of the middle mound interval and there is no difference between mound and bank communities. The demise of sponge mounds is successive from regional spread in the Sinemurian to more localised spots in the Lower Pliensbachian. This reduction correlates with an increasing influence of pelagic conditions. At Foum Tillicht, sponge mounds lack any photic contribution and there is virtually no differentiation into subcommunities between mound surface and cavity dwelling organisms. There is some evidence that the heterotrophic food web of mound communities was sourced by oxygen minimum zone edge effects, namely microbial recycling of essential elements such as N and P. Basin geometry suggests a waterdepth of several 100's of meters, well below the photic zone and possibly only controlled by the depth range of the oxygen minimum zone. Palaeoceanographic conditions of well-stratified deeper water masses diminished gradually during widespread transgression across the Sinemurian to Pliensbachian boundary culminating in the Lower Pliensbachianibex ammonite zone.  相似文献

Geophagy was observed 14 times during an 11-month field study on the ecology and behavior of masked titi monkeys (Callicebus personatus melanochir). Geophagy took place in 12 cases on the surface of a leaf-cutting ant mound (Atta spec.). Analysis of chemical composition and natural features of the soils consumed by the monkeys showed elevated concentrations of several elements. In contrast, a lower concentration of carbohydrates was found in the ant mound sample compared to random non-ant mound soil samples. No difference in the concentration of clay elements, pH-value or percentage of organic matter was found between ant mound samples and randomly collected soil samples. Comparison of used versus not used samples failed to reveal significant clues about function of geophagy. However, chemical and physical properties of soils ingested support previous hypothesis that this behavior may aid in the adsorbtion of plant toxins.  相似文献

Summary Portions of an annual serpentine grassland community in California are subject to frequent gopher mound formation. Consequently, studies were undertaken to characterize the effects of mound soils on plant growth and ion uptake. For two of the dominant annual species (Bromus mollis L. and Plantago erecta Morris), growth was reduced in gopher mound soil relative to that in inter-mound soil. A similar reduction in growth was found for plants grown in soils collected at a depth corresponding to the depth of gopher burrowing. This reduction in growth was associated with lower total P and N contents of the soil which were reflected in lower shoot contents of N and P. Additional experiments, however, showed that reduced N and P availabilities in mound soil were not entirely responsible for the growth reduction. Similarly, shoot Ca/Mg ratios were reduced in mound soil but additions of Ca improved the Ca/Mg ratio without improving growth. Growth reductions were associated with altered shoot concentrations of microelements, particularly elevated levels of Mn. A competition experiment between Plantago and Bromus showed that Bromus was more competitive than Plantago in mound and inter-mound soils and that soil type had only small affects on the nature of the interaction between the two species.  相似文献

Summary A heretofore undocumented example of skeletal mounds formed by the dasycladacean algaAnthracoporella spectabilis is described from mixed carbonate-clastic cycles (Auernig cyclothems) of the Late Carboniferous (Gzhelian) Auernig Group of the central Carnic Alps in southern Austria. The massive mound facies forms biostromal reef mounds that are up to several m thick and extend laterally over more than 100 m. The mound facies is developed in the middle of bedded limestones, which are up to 16 m thick. These limestones formed during relative sea-level highstands when clastic influx was near zero. The mound facies is characterized by well developed baffler and binder guilds and does not show any horizontal or vertical zonation. Within the massive mound faciesAnthracoporella is frequently found in growth position forming bafflestones and wackestones composed of abundantAnthracoporella skeletons which toppled in situ or drifted slightly.Anthracoporella grew in such profusion that it dominated the available sea bottom living space, forming ‘algal meadows’ which acted as efficient sediment producers and bafflers. BecauseAnthracoporella could not provide a substantial reef framework, and could not withstand high water turbulence, the biostromal skeletal mounds accumulated in shallow, quiet water below the active wave base in water depths less than 30 m. The massive mound facies is under- and overlain by, and laterally grades into bedded, fossiliferous limestones of the intermound facies, composed mainly of different types of wackestones and packstones. Individual beds containAnthracoporella andArchaeolithophyllum missouriense in growth position, forming “micromounds’. Two stages of mound formation are recognized: (1) the stabilization stage when bioclastic wackestones accumulated, and (2) the skeletal mound stage when the sea-bottom was colonized byAnthracoporella and other members of the baffler and binder guilds, formingAnthracoporella bafflestones and wackestones of the mound facies. A slight drop in sea-level led to the termination of the mound growth and accumulation of organic debris, particularly calcareous algae, fusulinids, crinoids and bryozoans, forming well bedded limestones, which overlie the mound facies

Vegetation in grasslands with well-developed long-lastingant-hills in the Slovenské Rudohorie Mts., Slovakia, was studiedin relation to (i) position on the mound, (ii) ant speciesforming the mound, and (iii) history of the mound. Permanent plotrecordings of mound size and dominant ant species started fifteen years priorthe study began provided information on the history of individual mounds. The mound vegetation bears a striking similarity to vegetation insimilar habitats across a large part of Europe due to presence of species suchas Agrostis capillaris, Dianthusdeltoides, Polytrichum commune agg.,Thymus pulegioides, and Veronicaofficinalis. Out of the three major ant species-groups presentat the site (Lasius flavus, Tetramoriumcaespitum and Formica spp.), L.flavus had the most pronounced and the most lasting effect on themound vegetation. The dominance of the plant species listed above increased withthe time span over which the mound was inhabited by L.flavus. The effects of other species on vegetation composition, though discernible from short-term observation, disappeared over severalyears. The mounds proper did not differ from the undisturbed grassland in theproportion of myrmecochorous plants or plants with specific seed size ordormancy type. However, there was a highly significant concentration ofmyrmecochorous plants in the grassland patches immediately neighbouring themounds; this is likely to be due to seeds deposited there by the workers fromthe nest after the elaiosomes had been consumed. The mound vegetation wascomposed mainly of species with long stolons or rhizomes; however, there was nosignificant difference in formation type or length of stolons/rhizomesbetween mounds and the rest of the grassland or among mounds formed by differentant species.  相似文献

A method is described for using young field slugs Deroceras reticulatum (Muller) in a bioassay study of biochemical resistance of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) cultivars to slugs. Tuber parts or an artificial diet were provided as food sources. Comparisons were made of feeding, survival and weight gain between the susceptible cultivar Maris Piper and the resistant cultivar Pentland Dell. Biochemical analyses were made of these two cultivars and the resistant cultivars Stormont Enterprise and Majestic. Comparisons of tuber sections and peelings as food sources indicated factors affecting growth were located in the surface layers of the tubers. Phenolics and glycoalkaloids were concentrated in the surface layers but the amounts were similar in the susceptible and resistant cultivars and the bioassays indicated that neither acting alone could explain resistance. The amounts and distribution of free amino acids also did not correlate with resistance although when supplied in the artificial diet they partly inhibited feeding. Proteinaceous inhibitors of slug gut proteolytic enzymes were present throughout the tubers but were not concentrated in the surface layers and the amounts were similar in the different cultivars thus they too did not explain the difference in susceptibility between the cultivars. Bioassays using acetone extracts (low molecular weight substances) and acetone powders (high molecular weight substances) either alone or in combination indicated that the resistant cultivar Pentland Dell contained a high molecular weight substance which together with a low molecular weight substance from either the same cultivar or the susceptible Maris Piper could confer resistance. Bioassays using protein extracts supplied in the presence or absence of chlorogenic acid indicated that this mechanism could comprise enzymic oxidation of phenolics. Assays of phenolase confirmed this since activity was highest in the outer layers of the tubers and was highest in the three resistant cultivars. Thus the chief resistance factor identified was high phenolase activity acting rapidly on phenolics when the slug first bites the tuber surface. The quantity of phenolics per se did not control the resistance. Thus while phenolics must be available, resistance is compatible with low blackening on cutting the tuber.  相似文献

To characterize the relationship between the leaf surface ofGerbera jamesoniiHooker cultivars and the searching behavior of the parasitoidEncarsia formosaGahan on a leaf, the trichome density and shape were described, and the walking behavior was quantified. Leaf hair density varied from 80 to more than 1000 trichomes/cm2and the hair shape varied from single erect trichomes to tapestries of entangled trichomes above the leaf surface. The walking activity, speed, and pattern of the parasitoid were tested on leaves with different hair density and shape. In spite of the large differences in leaf surface structure, the walking activity was similar and around 75% on most cultivars. The walking speed was between 0.2 and 0.3 mm/s on all cultivars and was not significantly different from the speed on tomato. On hairless sweet pepper leaves the walking speed is much higher (0.73 mm/s), so the hairs onGerberaleaves do hamper parasitoid females and result in a strong reduction of the walking speed, but the variation in hair density and shape onGerberadoes not lead to differences in walking activity, pattern, and speed. It appears that the hairs ofGerberaare less of an obstacle forE. formosathan the stiff, large hairs occurring in a high density on cucumber, where the walking speed of the parasitoid is less than 0.2 mm/s. A rise of temperature of 5°C gave a significantly higher walking speed (0.39 mm/s) ofE. formosafemales on all cultivars tested. The relative straightness of the walking track was high and the same on all cultivars. Consequences of the results of the searching behavior ofE. formosaonG. jamesoniicultivars are discussed with respect to other host plants. As parasitoid walking speeds are the same onGerberaand tomato, and whitefly reproduction is also similar on these two host plants, we conclude that biological control of whiteflies onGerberais a realistic option. This conclusion is confirmed by the strong increase of commercial biological control onGerberawhich occurred during the past 5 years.  相似文献

Summary During the uppermost Carboniferous and lowermost Permian algal mounds were formed in inner shelf settings of the Carnic Alps (Austria/Italy). A specific mound type, characterized by the dominance of the dasyclad green alga Anthracoporella was studied in detail with regard to geometry, relationship between mound and intermound rocks, composition of the sediment, biota and diagenetic criteria. The two meter-sized mounds studied, occur within depositional sequences of transgressive systems tracts in the Lower Pseudoschwagerina Limestones (uppermost Gzhelian) at the flank of the Schulterkofel. The mounds consist of an Anthracoporella core facies with a spongecrust boundstone facies at the base and at the top. The massive limestones of the Anthracoporella core facies exhibit abundant algal tufts and bushes, frequently in life position. The limestones of the intermound facies represented by thin-bedded bioclastic wackestones and packstones with abundant phylloid algae underlie and overlie the mounds. Intercalations of intermound beds within the mound facies indicate sporadic disruption of mound growth. Onlapping of intermound beds on steep mound flanks indicate rapid stabilization and lithification of mound flanks and the existence of a positive paleorelief. Asymmetrical shape of the mounds may be current controlled. Mound and intermound biota differ in the prevailing algae but are relatively similar with regard to associated foraminifera. Conspicuous differences concern bioerosion and biogenic encrustations. Bothare, high in intermound areas but low in the Anthracoporella core facies. The mounds show no ecological zonation. The mounds grew by in-place accumulation of disintegrated algal material and trapped bioclastic material between erect algal thalli. The comparison of the various Anthracoporella mounds demonstrates that almost each mound had ist own history. Establishing a general model for these mounds is a hazardous venture.  相似文献

Summary We measured soil translocation due to the tunneling of valley pocket gophers (Thomomys bottae) in a Mima moundfield at Miramar Mounds National Landmark, San Diego, California, from December, 1984 through December, 1985. We placed 1-l soil plugs containing 20 11-g iron pellets into pocket gopher tunnels at locations between mound tops and points about one mound radius beyond mound edges. After about 4–10 d, sites to which the marker-containing soil had been translocated were located with a metal detector and the horizontal and vertical displacements measured. Between 1 October and 15 May (the cooler, wetter portion of the year), pocket gophers removed an average of 63% of the experimental plugs and moved an average of 38% of the markers that we recovered. From 15 May through 1 October (the hotter, drier portion of the year), only 32% of plugs were cleared and 12% of the recovered markers were moved. On average, markers that were moved were displaced 41 cm moundward and 4.9 cm upward in elevation. The intensity of moundward translocation increased with distance from the mound center. At a distance of 0.5–1.0 mound radius beyond the edge of the mound, the moundward translocation tendency averaged 71 cm. The intensity of moundward translocation was also inversely related to maximum mound height. These observations provide strong support for the fossorial rodent hypothesis of Mima mound origin, and constitute a first step in development of a mathematical model of mound formation.  相似文献

This study investigated for the first time the impact of the internal mound environment of fungus‐growing termites on the growth of fungal crop parasites. Mounds of the termite Odontotermes obesus acted as (i) temperature and relative humidity (RH) ‘stabilisers’ showing dampened daily variation and (ii) ‘extreme environments’ exhibiting elevated RH and CO2 levels, compared to the outside. Yet, internal temperatures exhibited seasonal dynamics as did daily and seasonal CO2 levels. During in situ experiments under termite‐excluded conditions within the mound, the growth of the crop parasite Pseudoxylaria was greater inside than outside the mound, i.e., Pseudoxylaria is ‘termitariophilic’. Also, ex situ experiments on parasite isolates differing in growth rates and examined under controlled conditions in the absence of termites revealed a variable effect with fungal growth decreasing only under high CO2 and low temperature conditions, reflecting the in situ parasite growth fluctuations. In essence, the parasite appears to be adapted to survive in the termite mound. Thus the mound microclimate does not inhibit the parasite but the dynamic environmental conditions of the mound affect its growth to varying extents. These results shed light on the impact of animal‐engineered structures on parasite ecology, independent of any direct role of animal engineers.  相似文献

Abstract. Our objective was to evaluate the effects of burrowing activities by banner-tail kangaroo rats (Dipodomys spectabilis Merriam) on plant community structure and species dominance for two patch types at the ecotone between shortgrass steppe and desert grassland in New Mexico, USA. 10 mounds produced by kangaroo rats were selected in patches dominated by Bouteloua gracilis (the dominant in shortgrass steppe communities) and 10 mounds were selected in patches dominated by B. eriopoda (the dominant in Chihuahuan desert grasslands). Plant cover and density by species were sampled from three locations associated with each mound: the mound proper, the edge of the mound in the transition area, and the off-mound vegetation. Similar cover of B. eriopoda for the edges of mounds in both patch types indicates the ability of this species to respond to animal disturbances regardless of the amount of cover in the surrounding undisturbed vegetation. By contrast, cover of B. gracilis was low for all mounds and mound edges in patches dominated by this species. Much higher cover of B. eriopoda on mound edges compared to the undisturbed vegetation in B. gracilis-dominated patches indicates that kangaroo rats have important positive effects on this species. Lower cover of perennial grasses and higher cover of forbs, shrubs, and succulents on the edges of mounds in B. eriopoda-dominated patches compared to patches dominated by B. gracilis indicate the importance of surrounding vegetation to plant responses on disturbed areas. Our results show that kangaroo rats have important effects on both species dominance and composition for different patch types, and may provide a mechanism for small-scale dominance patterns at an ecotone; thus providing further support for their role as keystone species in desert grasslands.  相似文献

Sporulation of the rust fungus Uromyees phaseoli was checked on three different Brasilian bean cultivars on the upper and lower leaf surface of primary leaves in a growth chamber at 21°C. Although the sporulating area of the pustules was greater on the upper leaf surface, the pustules on the lower leaf surface produced nearly two times more spores on all three cultivars. The total number of spores produced per pustule was 41,600/81,000 spores (upper/ lower leaf surface) for the susceptible cultivar Rosinha G-2/C-21 and for the cultivars which possess horizontal resistance: Carioca/C-224 29,600/49,500 spores (upper/lower leaf surface), Roxo/C-743 32,964/50,700 spores (upper/lower leaf surface). The two cultivars with horizontal resistance produced nearly a third less spores than the susceptible cultivar.  相似文献

The mound building ant Formica exsecta Nyl. is widely distributed in grassland ecosystems of the Central European Alps. We studied the impact of these ants on seed bank and vegetation patterns in a 11 ha subalpine grassland, where we counted over 700 active ant mounds. The mounds showed a distinct spatial distribution with most of them being located in tall‐grass, which was rarely visited by ungulates (red deer; Cervus elaphus L.). Heavily grazed short‐grass, in contrast, seemed to be completely avoided by ants as only few mounds were found in this vegetation type. The species composition of the ant mound and grassland seed banks was quite similar, i.e. from 15 common plant species 12 were found in both seed bank types. We found the same proportions of myrmecochorous seeds in ant mound and grassland soil samples. In contrast, the number of seeds was 15 times higher in mound compared with the grassland soil samples. Also, the vegetation growing on ant mounds significantly differed from the vegetation outside the mounds: graminoids dominated on ant mounds, herbaceous and myrmecochorous species in the grassland vegetation. We found significant continuous changes in vegetation composition on gradients from the ant mound centre to 1 m away from the mound edge. Overall, F. exsecta was found to have a considerable impact on seed bank and vegetation patterns in the grassland ecosystem studied. These insects not only altered grassland characteristics in the close surrounding of their mounds, but also seem to affect the entire ecosystem including, for example, the spatial use of the grassland by red deer.  相似文献
