The taxonomic composition and the abundance of two communities of snakes were studied in two different areas of southern Nigeria. One community was studied in a derived savanna area (environs of Ejule, 06°54N, 07°23E), and one community was studied in a moist rainforest area (environs of Eket, 04°50N, 07°59E). Both the specific diversity and the mean frequency of observation of snakes were significantly higher in the forest area than in the savanna area, and the dominance index was higher in the savanna than in the forest site. However, most of the species were found in only one of the two areas, depending on their habitat requirements (e.g. Gastropyxis smaragdina, Dispholidus typus, Thelotornis kirtlandii, Dendroaspis jamesoni, Bitis nasicornis, Causus maculatus, etc). The forest community housed a significant number of arboreal and semiaquatic taxa, but in both sites most of the species were terrestrial. The commonest species in the forest area was an oviparous, semiaquatic, batracophagous natricine snake (Afronatrix anoscopus), whereas the commonest species in the savanna area was an oviparous terrestrial lacertophagous psammophine snake (Psammophis phillipsi). Some conservation implications of our biodiversity analyses are presented. It is suggested that the moist rainforest represents a critically endangered habitat, and should deserve special attention by the international scientific community. Oil industry activity is especially dangerous for snake communities, especially in the southernmost regions of Nigeria.  相似文献

Summary Much ecological theory assumes that the number of species that can coexist (by species packing) is limited, because competitive exclusion occurs when any pair of species within a guild is too similar — species saturation or niche limitation. If such niche limitation occurs, the proportion of species in each guild should be relatively constant — guild proportionality. This concept is applied to the guilds represented by strata in a forest. A method is produced, and used to examine a New Zealand temperate rain forest. Most strata showed no deviation from a null model of no niche limitation, i.e. no tendency to guild proportionality. The proportion of lianes was more variable than in the null model, tending to be inversely related to the proportion of epiphytes, Canopy tree proportion was significantly more constant than in the null model, but this could be interpreted as a limit caused by the size of a canopy tree individual.  相似文献

The cylindrical meltholes present in the ablation zones of many glaciers (termed cryoconite holes) contain complex microbial communities. A canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) of community structure and environmental gradients for cryoconite holes on two glaciers was undertaken. The Canada Glacier (77°37S, 162°55E) is located in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica. The White Glacier (79°27N, 90°40W) is located on Axel Heiberg Island, Nunavut Territory, Canada. These glaciers are at similar, yet antipodal latitudes, are roughly the same size and endure approximately the same mean annual temperature. The Canada Glacier cryoconite communities were found to be significantly (P=0.001) associated with six environmental variables, which together explained 55% of the biological variation. The White Glacier cryoconite communities were not significantly associated with environmental variables. The differences in CCA results were attributed to the relative amount of disturbance and isolation between each glaciers cryoconite holes. Canada Glacier cryoconite holes were mostly ice-covered and undisturbed by meltwater flow, whereas high meltwater production and open cryoconite holes on the White Glacier may continually reset the community structure and habitat variability due to inter-hole mixing.  相似文献

Summary Structure of breeding bird communities was compared among four habitat types representative of stages present in most old-field successions in the eastern deciduous forest formation of North America. The successional catagories, defined by vegetational structure, were designated herbaceous (type A habitats) herb, shrub and sapling (type B), young forest (type C), and older forest (type D). Density of breeding birds was lowest in A habitats, rose sharply in B habitats and reached a maximum in D habitats. Species richness and number of feeding guild showed similar patterns. Mean number of species per guilds was highest in D habitats. Generalist feeding guilds were predominant in type A and B habitats, primarily due to the importance of the graminivore-insectivore guild. Specialist guilds increased in importance with succession due to addition of several insectivorous guilds in later successional stages. Patterns of occurrence of individual feeding guilds are analyzed and discussed with respect to changes in vegetational structure. Variance in community structure was generally highest in A habitats and lowest in D habitats; this is discussed in relation to the evolution of saturated, coadapted communities.  相似文献

Urban reserves provide a major opportunity for conservation of indigenous biodiversity in the heavily urbanised landscape of Waitakere City (Auckland), New Zealand. However, there is little documented information on what indigenous fauna survives in these reserves. Beetle (Coleoptera) communities associated with two small, isolated urban reserves and two sites in a larger forest area within the Waitakere Ranges were sampled using pitfall traps and analysed. A total of 887 beetles, from 23 families and 89 recognisable taxonomic units were caught. The urban reserves had a marked reduction in species richness and abundance of beetles compared with the sites within the larger forest areas. Various environmental factors influencing the distribution of beetles across the sites were investigated. The most important factors were size of fragment, local forest cover and soil moisture. Common species (>5 specimens in the total dataset) found in the Waitakere Ranges and small urban reserves, were either endemic or indigenous to New Zealand. Therefore, even though these reserves may be isolated from a larger, more continuous forest tract, they have considerable potential as reservoirs of beetle diversity in highly modified landscapes and the contribution of urban reserves to the local sustainability of beetle assemblages emphasises the importance of maintaining green areas in and around cities.  相似文献

The research was conducted in two natural forest communities: Potentillo albae-Quercetum (oak forest) which allows much light to reach the forest floor and Tilio-Carpinetum typicum (hornbeam forest) which shades the herb layer heavily. The seed banks were estimated from numbers of seedlings emerging from soil samples over one growing season.(1) Our results confirm the hypothesis that persistent seed banks are mainly formed by species with high light requirements. Of the species found predominantly in the seed bank and absent from the herb layer or occurring there very rarely in both communities 83% of species and 70% of seedlings were strongly light-demanding (Ellenberg's light index 6–9). However, the results do not support the hypothesis that seed banks in natural deciduous forest communities are small, poor in species and do not reflect the species composition of herb layer.(2) The seed banks of both communities were rich in species and relatively large. Species richness in the oak forest turned out to be higher than in the hornbeam forest (51 vs 45 species/2.4 m2), but size was smaller (2659 vs 5789 seedlings/2.4 m2). In the oak forest the most abundant species in the seed bank was Galium boreale, but it constituted only 19% of the total number of seedlings, whereas in the hornbearn forest the dominant species, Urtica dioica, constituted 57% of the total.(3) In each community the species composition of the seed bank and the herb layer was very similar (>70%).(4) The seed bank was more diverse in the oak forest than in the hornbeam forest (H 2.34 vs 1.68).(5) The seed banks of both communities differed in the contribution of species with varied light requirements; in the sunny oak forest species with high light requirements dominated, whereas in the shady hornbeam forest both strongly and moderately light-demanding species had similar contributions.Nomenclature: Follows Ehrendorfer (1973) and Matuszkiewicz (1981).  相似文献

The universal occurrence and abundance of nematodes provides opportunities to investigate ecological factors that may influence biodiversity. Clarke and Warwick (2001) have proposed diversity indices average taxonomic distance(AvTD), variation in taxonomic distinctness (VarTD) for computing marine nematode biodiversity based on classification trees. Faith [Biological Conservation 61 (1992) 1] had previously proposed a diversity index based on phylogenetic trees, though not applied to nematodes. Clarke and Warwick (2001) also considered an index AvPD analogous to AvTD. These indices have been applied to five very large collections of free-living nematodes from three exposed sandy beaches in Australia. Two were from a beach close to Darwin in northern Australia, two from the temperate southeast coast of Australia and one from the south of the Australian mainland. The collections extend over a considerable range of latitude, from 12°26S to 38°33S and the controversial hypothesis that latitudinal gradients per se influence the biodiversity of marine nematode assemblages is examined. AvTD did not vary among collections and its value for any collection was indistinguishable from that of random samples of the same size drawn from the total species pool. VarTD showed no variation for three of the collections, but was slightly higher than expected for the mid-latitude beach, attributed to unevenness in the classification trees. AvTD and VarTD were not greatly affected by differences in sampling intensity. PD varied directly with the number of species found but observed PD did not differ from the PD of random samples of the same number of species taken from the total species pool. Thus, the observed variation in PD is wholly accounted for by variations in species richness. The number of species found increased with decreasing latitude. It appears that species richness by itself is an adequate index of biodiversity for the free-living nematodes of these sandy beaches, and more complex indices such as AvTD, VarTD and PD are unnecessary.  相似文献

Although Australia has a productive history in plant and animal breeding, fundamental genetics was late in becoming established. Before the 1950s there was no separate department of genetics in any university in the country. Reasons for the delay include geographical isolation, Australian and British colonial science policy, and the lack of a critical mass of researchers. Through the efforts of Ian Clunies Ross and the CSIR several prominent scientists were induced to come from overseas to set up the framework for an Australian-based genetics community. Since that time fundamental genetics in Australia has flourished with high quality graduates in genetics being produced at a number of universities, and many local research programs being initiated. This period has seen the gradual internationalisation of Australian genetics and increased collaboration with overseas researchers taking place. This paper provides an historical overview of the origins and progress of genetics in Australia beginning with plant breeding in the first decades of this century to the present era of molecular genetics. Significant personalities, institutions, policies, reports and publications are discussed in order to make sense of the current structures.  相似文献

Exotic invasive species can directly and indirectly influence natural ecological communities. Cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) is non-native to the western United States and has invaded large areas of the Great Basin. Changes to the structure and composition of plant communities invaded by cheatgrass likely have effects at higher trophic levels. As a keystone guild in North American deserts, granivorous small mammals drive and maintain plant diversity. Our objective was to assess potential effects of invasion by cheatgrass on small-mammal communities. We sampled small-mammal and plant communities at 70 sites (Great Basin, Utah). We assessed abundance and diversity of the small-mammal community, diversity of the plant community, and the percentage of cheatgrass cover and shrub species. Abundance and diversity of the small-mammal community decreased with increasing abundance of cheatgrass. Similarly, cover of cheatgrass remained a significant predictor of small-mammal abundance even after accounting for the loss of the shrub layer and plant diversity, suggesting that there are direct and indirect effects of cheatgrass. The change in the small-mammal communities associated with invasion of cheatgrass likely has effects through higher and lower trophic levels and has the potential to cause major changes in ecosystem structure and function.  相似文献

Species phytomass in 40 mm×40 mm quadrats was used to examine community structure in four homogeneous areas of vegetation in sand dune slacks. There were from 9 to 16 common species in the samples, and most parameters of community structure were found to relate consistently to species number. We used covariance between all species at increasing dimensions of aggregations of quadrats to suggest that sociological interaction between species existed at scales of around 200 mm diameter. Generalised variance was of no help in this enquiry. We show that a connectance estimation arrived at from these parameters is, although a real feature of the analysis, apparently unrelated to connectance as understood in the food web literature. There is strong evidence that guild structure, sociological interaction and niche limitation increase with increasing number of species present, so that most diverse assemblage can be said to have a definite community structure.  相似文献

It is common in community ecology to use the species as the taxonomic category of interest, yet in rich tropical assemblages containing guilds of very similar species this may not be appropriate. Such assemblages may be organized at the level of guilds rather than at the finer species level. In a ten-year study of assemblages of fish at One Tree Reef, Great Barrier Reef, we found species composition and the number of fish on a given lagoonal patch reef vary greatly across time (Sale and Douglas 1984; Sale et al. in preparation). The mean average proportional similarity of a reef's assemblage to itself at different times (censuses) is usually low at a value of around 0.5. This apparent variability may be ecologically irrelevant noise if organization is at the higher guild level. We have recast our database at the guild level to test this possibility. Thirteen guilds were defined by the diets, foraging habitats and times of the individual species comprising them. Similarity of an assemblage to itself at successive censuses was re-calculated using the number of individuals in each guild instead of the numbers in each species. This analysis yielded significantly higher levels of similarity (P<0.01) among censuses. To test whether this increase in similarity was due solely to the smaller number of categories used to calculate the similarity indices, 5 sets of randomly generated guilds were constructed using a Monte Carlo approach. No significant difference (P>0.05) was found between the average similarity among censuses when assemblages were classified into these null guilds and when they were classified according to the real guilds. These results indicate that shifting to the larger taxonomic scale of guilds does not reveal a significantly more persistent assemblage structure than that revealed when analysis is at the smaller scale of species. There is no evidence of an underlying organization of these assemblages at the guild level.  相似文献

The Federal Government of Nigeria is constructing a dam across the River Niger at Kainji (9°51N, 4°37E). When complete approximately 130,000 hectares will be inundated. An account of the climate, hydrology, geology, pedology, land-usage and vegetation of the reservoir site is given. The terrestrial plant communities are described in outline. The aquatic and marsh plant communities are described in more detail using the floristic-ecological method.  相似文献

Fifty-seven small- to middle-size lakes of Sweden (size-range from <0.1 to about 200 km2) representing different regions and lake-types were selected for the purpose of demonstrating the indicative value of profundal oligochaete communities also of relatively small lakes. It is well known since previously that profundal oligochaete assemblages of large lakes in Europe may be particularly indicative of the current trophic situation, but little has been known about smaller lakes in this respect. Characterizations based on oligochaete community structure in these lakes could be summarized in eight different groups: Characteristic oligochaete communities in oligotrophic lakes of relatively small size are Spirosperma ferox, Stylodrilus heringianus and Tubifex tubifex. Oligochaete species richness is low (1–3 species) and so is species abundance (<300 specimens m–2). Very eutrophic lakes of the same size-range are largely dominated by the tubificids Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri and/or Potamothrix hammoniensis. Substitute or complementary species may be T. tubifex. Species richness is usually low (1–3 species), but abundance is high to very high (>5000 specimens m–2). Mesotrophic to moderately eutrophic lakes of the same size categories contain more species than the above extremes, most of them being fairly tolerant to oxygene deficiency such as Tubifex ignotus, a number of species of the genera Aulodrilus and Limnodrilus and a variety of so-called Ponto-Caspian Potamothrix species, most of them having recently invaded south-eastern Sweden. Species richness is moderate to high (4–8 species), while abundance may vary considerably (range from about 300 to about 5000 specimens m–2). In this respect, small- to middle-size lakes do not differ much from larger lakes. For the trophic characterization of lake water the mean concentrations of total-phosphorus (in g l–1) is generally regarded to be the most appropriate measure. The match between characterizations based upon oligochaete community structure and total-phosphorus concentrations is generally very good for large lakes. The present study shows that this applies fairly well also to the majority of the small- to middle-size lakes selected for this study. This has not been shown before. Obvious deviations from this rule could be caused by a scarcity of reliable chemical data, or considerable seasonal shifts in the chemical composition ot the water, which in its turn may be caused by short water residence time. Littoral elements in the fauna, which are generally less indicative, or effects of local inflows may also be more frequent here than in lakes of larger size.  相似文献

Summary Vegetation dynamics after fire was studied in six communities in Bas-Languedoc (Southern France). 47 plots were observed by means of a permanent transect for ten years. In the first part, we describe floristic richness, species fugacity and the way by which, the terminal community (as defined by the last observation) appears. The dynamics of all these communities follows a simple and general model: floristic richness reaches its maximum during the first two years after a fire, then decreases and becomes stable. Fugacity follows a similar model, whereas the mergence of the terminal community is rapid: one year after fire 70% of the plots have already acquired 75% of the species of the terminal community. There is no succession (in the general sense of the word), but a progressive reappearance of the species belonging to the original community. In the second part, we study floristic similarities between our plots and corresponding associations as described in literature. It appears that after a fire the floristic diversity of the landscape remains high; while the communities rapidly reach a relative maturity. In the study area fire seems to be a rather superficial phenomenon; it does not lead to an important modification of the community dynamics, because probably the most frequent species in Bas-Languedoc developed adaptations to withstand fire.  相似文献

There is still disagreement as to whether plant communities can be described as conforming to certain assembly rules. We searched for such rules in the vegetation of four dune slacks in west Wales by examining variance in richness, guild proportionality, biomass constancy and dominance/diversity relations. To test for the occurrence of niche limitation, variance in quadrat species-richness was compared to null models of species occurrence. Using an Overall-model, one site showed a deficit of variance, but this disappeared when a Patch-model analysis was used. It therefore seems likely that the effect observed was due to equality in the species pools adapted to different microenvironments. The proportional representation of functional guilds was examined, in guilds based on morphology and life history. Significant constancy of guild proportions was seen for the annual guild in the only site in which it occurred, perhaps reflecting a regeneration niche. Total biomass per quadrat was examined, and compared to a model in which the biomass of each species was determined at random from the biomasses of that species at the site. Surprisingly, the observed biomasses showed no departure from the null model. However, there was considerable discrepancy from an alternative null model in which biomasses were allocated at random irrespective of species. This would imply that competition limits species coexistence, rather than performance. Examination of the proportions of species from different potential-size classes in each quadrat gave limited confirmation. The local abundance of species (mean biomass) was significantly correlated with the frequency of the species within a site, parallelling the geographical-range/local-abundance correlation previously reported. Five dominance/diversity models were fitted to the biomass data. The best fits were given by the Geometric or the General Lognormal models, though which fitted best varied between and within sites. Between sites, there was some indication of a consistent difference in Preston's gamma. Most of the results are compatible with Gleason's Individualistic concept of the plant community, though there are several pointers that assembly rules have some impact on community structure.  相似文献

Surface sediment diatom assemblages were examined from 26 freshwater sites near Isachsen (78°47N, 103°32W), Ellef Ringnes Island, a region of diverse and atypical water chemistry for high arctic sites. One hundred and sixty eight diatom taxa were identified from these samples, over 50% of which had not previously been recorded in the Canadian High Arctic. Variations in diatom assemblages were related to changes in measured environmental variables using multivariate techniques. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) indicated that five variables contributed significantly to explaining patterns of diatom variation (i.e., COND, DIC, Mn, TPF, TPU). The first CCA axis (=0.44) was primarily controlled by conductivity-related variables, while CCA axis 2 (=0.21) was related to particulate concentrations. Diatom-based inference models were generated for the reconstruction of conductivity (RMSEPjack=0.32, r2jack=0.76) and pH (RMSEPjack=0.40, r2jack=0.69). The strengths of these models indicate that it will be possible to reliably infer past trends in conductivity and pH from diatom assemblages preserved in dated sediment cores from the Isachsen region.  相似文献

From 1998 through to 2000, we satellite-tracked the movements of 13 Oriental White Storks (Ciconia boyciana) on their autumnal migration in order to identify their important stopover sites for preserving links from the Russian Far East breeding sites to the wintering sites in south-eastern China. New analytical methods of satellite tracking data were employed to derive robust information on the locations of stay sites, the number of stopovers made during migration, and the distance traveled without making stopovers. Based on the derived information, we modeled a stay site network as an abstraction of the storks potential migration routes from their breeding sites to wintering sites. Using network analysis techniques, we explored how the loss of stopover sites could affect the connectivity of potential migration routes. The results suggested that if the seashore stopover sites facing Bohai Bay in eastern China were lost, the storks wintering sites along the Yangtze River in south-eastern China would be isolated. Among the seashore stopover sites, Jiantuozhi Gley Mire (39.185°N, 118.627°E), located on the northern seashore of Bohai Bay, was considered particularly important for migrating storks, because it was used every year by the storks we tracked. If conservation needs of this critically located site fail to be addressed, the stay site network of storks can create weak links in the chain of migration and, if broken, storks will have great difficulties in completing their autumnal migration.  相似文献

Weevil (Curculionidae, Coleoptera) species richness and composition were investigated and compared among larch [Larix kaempferi (Lamb.) Carriére] plantations, secondary forests, and old-growth forests in the central mountainous region of Japan. In addition, to assess the effects of forest-management practices, namely thinning and long-rotation logging schedules (long rotation), the weevil assemblages of recently thinned middle-aged and long-rotated larch plantations were compared with those of middle-aged larch plantations. Malaise traps were set in 44 stands of these forest types, and weevils were separated and identified. Several environmental factors other than forest type were also examined. Weevil species richness and diversity indices [Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H) and Simpsons index of diversity (D)] were higher in the secondary forest than in the larch plantation. Because of its wide distribution and higher weevil species richness, the secondary forest contributed to maintaining weevil diversity in this region. Old-growth forest had higher diversity indices (H and D) than did the larch plantation. The secondary forest had the highest number of species in total. Though the number of individuals was the highest in larch plantation, species richness, H and D of the plantation were generally low. Weevil community structure and species composition differed among the three forest types, but the difference in weevil composition between the larch plantation and the other two forest types was the largest. Forest type is probably the most important factor for determining the differences in weevil assemblage, and further, both dominant tree type (coniferous trees versus broad-leaved trees) and the number of mature tree species seem to be important factors for weevil species composition. Among forest management practices, long rotation caused diversity indices (H and D) to increase while thinning appeared to cause only minor changes in the weevil assemblages. Because species richness and species composition of Curculionidae well reflected the differences in forest types and some other environmental factors investigated, this family seems suitable for diversity research in forests. Further research on biodiversity with the use of this family should, therefore, be expected.  相似文献

With its very broad latitudinal extension (from 5° to 30°S), Brazil's Atlantic Rain Forest includes sites that wouldnot be classified as tropical by commonly used climatic classificationsystems. This situation particularly holds for the sites nearthe southern limits of this ecosystem. The goal of this study was to assess forest floristic composition, physiognomic aspects (deciduousspecies, leaf types, leaf area index) and reproductive biology (monoecious/dioeciousspecies, pollination syndromes and dispersal syndromes) of the Atlantic forest in the Volta VelhaReserve, southern Brazil (26°04 S, 48°38 W Gr). The research focuses on theaffinities of this site, which lies outside generally accepted boundaries for tropical forest. Theresults demonstrate that Volta Velha has a typically tropical floristic composition, apparentlymaintained by local climatic conditions. The differences between the characteristics of the VoltaVelha forest and those of other tropical stands are within the range of differences observed amongclassically defined tropical sites.  相似文献

This paper reports on a detailed phytosociological analysis of forests in the NW catchment of the Gola River in Kumaun Himalaya, 29°19–29°27N and 79°32–79°42E. Fourteen sites and 56 stands at elevations ranging from 1200 to 2523 m and covering the following five forest types were investigated: Pinus roxburghii, mixed, Quercus leucotrichophora, Q. lanuginosa, and Q. floribunda. The basal cover of the forests differed according to slope position and aspect. The three oak forests had more basal cover than the other two, and Q. lanuginosa had the most. The performance of individual tree and shrub species and the number of saplings and seedlings differed according to slope position and aspect. The mixed forest had the greatest tree diversity, and among the others diversity increased with increasing basal cover. The diversity of trees, saplings, and herb layer was greatest on aspects with intermediate temperature and moisture conditions; whereas that of shrubs and seedlings increased towards the cooler (and wetter) and warmer (and drier) exposures. There was a positive relation between the diversity of shrubs plus seedlings and trees plus saplings in P. roxburghii and mixed forests; whereas this relationship was inverse in the three oak forests. In general, the dominance-diversity curves for the tree layer followed a geometric series conforming to the niche pre-emption situation in communities of low diversity. Among the forests, the regeneration was best in Q. lanuginosa and worst in Q. leucotrichophora.Nomenclature follows: Osmaston (1926).Finacial support from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, New Delhi and the Indian Space Research Organisation, Banglore is gratefully acknowledged.  相似文献
