Behaviors associated with spawning by the halfmoon grouper, Epinephelus rivulatus, at Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia, are described from in situ observations made each evening throughout most of a lunar cycle. Spawning occurred after sunset on six consecutive evenings during the full moon period. During this time males were particularly aggressive toward one another and maintained high levels of activity among the gravid females that rested within each of their territories. Spawning occurred when a male swam alongside a responsive female and the pair rose in a tight spiral 1–1.5 m into the water column before releasing gametes and returning to the seabed. Spawning activity was followed by a longer nonspawning period (ca. 20 days), when fewer intraspecific interactions were observed and gamete reserves were replenished. Histological and behavioral evidence suggests that this cycle of spawning and replenishment may occur on a monthly basis. Although individual fish, particularly females, moved into certain areas to spawn, E. rivulatus did not form spawning aggregations as do larger species of grouper.  相似文献

Synopsis The status of knowledge of spawning among the five shallow waterChaetodon species in the western Atlantic is reviewed. Spawning has been observed for three species in Puerto Rico, St. Croix and the Bahamas, with possible courtship in a fourth.Chaetodon aculeatus spawned near the time of sunset over objects on the reef as single female/male pairs or as two females and one male, with pair spawning in rapid succession. Spawning occurred during much of the lunar month from February to April and it is uncertain whether any lunar periodicity to spawning exists. Male-male aggression was noted. Spawning sites (coral heads) were alternated daily and it is likely that females spawn only once every two days. A single female produced as many as 2090 eggs in a single spawning.Chaetodon capistratus spawned during much of the lunar month from February to April. It spawned about 5 min afterC. aculeatus, occasionally using the same sites, and alternated sites daily. A female produced as many as 3710 eggs in one spawning.Chaetodon striatus spawned from February to April but it is unknown if it has any lunar spawning cycle. No predation attempts by piscivores on spawning adults were seen. Predation byMelichthys niger on eggs ofC. striatus occurred. No egg predation was observed forC. aculeatus andC. capistratus. With an assumed four month reproductive season, alternate day spawning and observed egg production values,C. aculeatus andC. capistratus produce respectively about 100 000 and 200 000 eggs per large female per year. The reproductive strategy of smaller species may be to produce moderate numbers of eggs per day over a spawning season of at least a few months while larger species may produce more eggs per day for a shorter period.  相似文献

Synopsis Spawning aggregations of the Nassau grouper, Epinephelus striatus, occurring at the southern end of Long Island were investigated during the winters of 1987–1988 and 1988–1989. Fish aggregate at two specific sites around the time of the full moon in December and January, possibly not during November and almost certainly not during February. At one site the fish aggregate well inside the shelf edge while at the other they are on the dropoff into deep water. Fish migrate, probably as distinct groups of up to about 500 individuals, to the sites on or before the full moon and remain for several days. There was no significant difference in the size of males and females caught from the aggregations between years or months. Female/male sex ratio was between 5 : 1 and 3 : 1. Courtship occurred in late afternoon with spawning commencing shortly before sunset. Most spawning occurred within 10 min of sunset. Water temperatures were 25.0–25.5°C during a period of gradual decrease towards the annual minimum in February and March. Two color patterns were important in courtship and spawning. The bicolor pattern is a submissive coloration indicating a non-aggressive state acquired by both males and females near the time of spawning. The dark phase is acquired by females who are followed by numerous bicolor fish during courtship and they lead spawning events in this pattern. Spawning occurred among subgroups of the aggregation numbering 3–25 fish; gamete release was well above the bottom. Drogues deployed with the gametes either moved inshore or did not move far away from the shelf edge over the course of several days. Nassau groupers may not strictly be protogynous hermaphrodites and other groupers which form spawning aggregations may not be so either. Latitudinal shifts in spawning time may be related to water temperatures. Currents at aggregation sites do not appear to favor offshore transport of eggs. Questions of whether spawning aggregations should be protected need to be answered.  相似文献

Silver pomfret, Pampus argenteus, were collected by fishing with drift gillnets on one spawning ground in Kuwait waters during 1998–2000. Fish size frequency, sex ratio, maturation cycle, spawning frequency, fecundity and egg weight were assessed. The length–weight relationship differed between sexes whereby females were significantly bigger than males. Spawning started in mid‐May and continued until early October. During this time the water temperature ranged from 26.0 to 32.8°C, salinity was ? 39.0‰ and water depth ranged between 5 and 12 m. Large females spawned earlier than young spawners and the overall percentage of males during the spawning period was 70.3%. Spawning occurred after 13.00 h, with peak spawning between 15.00 and 18.00 hours during outgoing tide. Mean daily spawning frequency amounted to 63.2%. Spawning activity was found to be associated with the lunar cycle and spawnings were concentrated during the first and third quarters of the moon period, indicating a semilunar reproduction cycle. It was concluded that a female would spawn at least six times during the season. No change was observed in relative fecundity during the peak spawning season (June–August). Average relative batch fecundity was 176.3 eggs g?1 somatic weight (SW), corresponding to a relative total fecundity of 1058 eggs g?1 SW, which is 1.5 times higher than estimates obtained from counting the standing stock of oocytes. Bigger fish produced heavier eggs and the egg weight decreased as the spawning season progressed. Based on gonadal cycles, oocyte size frequency distribution and total fecundity, we concluded that silver pomfret is a multiple batch spawner with indeterminate fecundity.  相似文献

Spawning aggregations of red hind Epinephelus guttatus, tiger grouper Mycteroperca tigris and yellowfin grouper Mycteroperca venenosa were identified at two coral‐reef systems: Arrecife Alacranes (emergent bank reef) and Bajos del Norte (submerged bank reef) on the continental shelf of the Yucatan Peninsula (Campeche Bank), Mexico. At both reefs, E. guttatus forms large spawning aggregations between February and March. At Bajos del Norte, M. tigris reproduces in a small, low‐density aggregation in May, while M. venenosa aggregates at high densities for spawning between March and May. Multi‐species use of an aggregation site by E. guttatus and M. venenosa was observed at Bajos del Norte. The identified spawning aggregations are apparently stable in location over time, and all three species were commonly observed to spawn within 1 week following the full moon. Development and survival of the larvae spawned in these aggregations are probably aided by a seasonal (spring–summer) upwelling in the north‐east Campeche Bank. A permanent area closure at Bajos del Norte, currently outside any specific fisheries management area or regulations, would provide protection needed for the spawning aggregations of these three species.  相似文献

The humphead wrasse Cheilinus undulatus formed resident spawning aggregations daily after high tide at specific locations along the seaward edge of the Palau barrier reef. The location and extent of one aggregation site remained consistent for 6 years with no physical features distinguishing it from adjacent areas. Spawning was documented most months and probably occurred year round with possible seasonal and lunar variation. Spawning males arrived first at the site, followed by females and potentially small primary males. The aggregation female to male sex ratio was estimated to be between 6:1 and 10:1. A maximum of 15 males and 100–150 females were observed at the site. A male courtship posture with the anal fin pointed, the caudal fin folded down and the dorsal fin folded against the body was maintained while swimming a few metres off the bottom in view of females. When ready to spawn females rose up as the posturing male passed and the pair released gametes in a relatively sedate fashion near the surface along the shelf break. No attempted predation on spawning adults was seen. Egg predation after spawning was uncommon. On days with early to mid‐day high tides the spawning period started 2·0–2·5 h after high tide when the speed of lagoon–ocean tidal currents peaked and lasted c. 1 h. On days with later afternoon high tides, spawning occurred sooner after high tide and before current speeds peaked. Other fishes with planktonic eggs spawned at the site as pairs or small groups in a rough succession after high tide with C. undulatus, the last species to spawn.  相似文献

Paternal care is predominant among telcost fishes with external fertilization. This study describes maternal care in a haremic coral-reef fish and discusses the possible factors leading to its evolution. Both sexes of the triggerfish Rhinecanthus aculeatus (Balistidae) maintained territories; some individuals for more than 8 years. Each male's territory overlapped 2-3 female territories. Pair-spawning occurred around sunrise. Only females cared for the demersal eggs until hatching, which occurred just after sunset on the day of the spawning. No predation was observed on eggs under the maternal care, but experimental removal of parental females decreased the hatching rate to nearly zero. Egg-guarding females foraged as frequently as males, but less than half of non-spawning days. Spawning occurred only in the periods of about 1 wk around the new or full moon, and individual females spawned up to three times in each period. Thus, the maternal care did not significantly affect the duration of the females' spawning intervals, while males would suffer mate loss if they performed parental care. In this situation, maternal care should be the evolutionarily stable strategy. Evolutionary transition from no care to maternal care and then to biparental care is suggested in the Balistidae.  相似文献

Synopsis Spawning of 32 species of Labridae and 13 species of Scaridae was seen at Enewetak Atoll, Marshall Islands. Most spawned on a reef bisecting the main ocean-lagoon passage which had strong tidal currents. Others spawned on lagoon reefs and in Halimeda beds. Polygynous haremic, lek-like and promiscuous mating systems were found which were species specific. Data on reproductive patterns, sexual dichromatism, sexual dimorphism, seasonality and spawning behavior were determined. Many spawned during the day in a time-phase dependent pattern from near sunrise to sunset. Scarid spawning began at slack high water or after when currents were starting to move out of the lagoon. Labrid spawning usually started about 30 min later with some continuing up to 2 h after high tide. With high tide before sunrise, scarid spawning began 30–50 min after sunrise as the current started flowing over the reef. With high tide near sunset, spawning occurred with an incoming current. Most labroids spawned on all phases of the moon. Acanthuridae (6 spp), Caesionidae (1 sp.) and Zanclidae (1 sp.) spawned after high tide at the same time as labroids. Pomacanthidae (5 spp.) spawned only shortly before sunset without reference to tidal currents. Fishes producing pelagic eggs at the lagoon-ocean channel spawned (1) at or slightly after high tide (44spp.), (2) in late afternoon without reference to tide (6 spp.) or (3) after slack low water (1 sp. ). Spawning style can vary within a single species in different environments. Despite the presence of many piscivores, no successful predation on spawning adults was seen. Predation on newly released eggs was uncommon. Labrichthys unilineata and Anampses twistii attempted to defend their eggs for a few sec after release. Attacks by piscivores on spawning adults on tropical reefs occur once per 100–1000 spawnings. Most are wary when preparing to spawn and prespawning behavior is easily interrupted. The risk from piscivores goes down and spawning ascent speed decreases with increasing size of spawners. Egg predation by zooplanktivores is less for pair spawners than group spawners possibly due to less conspicuous gamete clouds and times of spawning. Increasing height of egg release, speed and length of the spawning ascent, and trajectory alteration of ascending adults are believed to make it more difficult for zooplanktivores to locate eggs after release. For labrids, permanent full sexual dichromatism was found among haremic, lek-like and promiscuous mating systems. Species with temporary full dichromatism, permanent and temporary partial dichromatism and monochromatism were haremic. Smaller scarids were believed to have lek-like, and larger species haremic, mating systems. Smaller scarids had male looping behavior and post spawning displays, plus faster spawning ascents and different locations for egg release than larger ones. Eggs of 21 labrids were spherical or nearly spherical, ranging from 0.55–0.80 mm in diameter, and most had one oil globule. Among 7 is scarids, 6 had spindle-shaped eggs ranging from 1.25 ×0.50 mm 2.14× 0.48 mm while one had a nearly spherical egg. One scarid egg lacked an oil globule.  相似文献

Reproductive behavior and mating systems of the triggerfish,Sufflamen chrysopterus (Balistidae), were studied on the fringing reef of Sesoko Island, Okinawa. Both males and females maintained territories against consexual adults, feeding on benthic animals within their own territories. Each male territory overlapped one or two female territories, with mating occurring between the cohabitants. The monogamous males were smaller and foraged more frequently than the bigamous ones, suggesting that the former allocated more energy to growth rather than to improving reproductive success. Pair spawning occurred around sunrise, females only taking care of the demersal eggs until hatching, which occurred around sunset of the same day. On spawning days females foraged less frequently than usual, but as frequently as males. Females spawned at intervals of 5–7 days, usually shifting sites within their territories. Thus both feeding and spawning sites were available for females within their territories, providing males with the opportunity to monopolize females by defending their territories.  相似文献

Based on egg collection records, spontaneous spawning activity of sea bass, Lates calcarifer (Bloch), reared in floating net cages followed a semilunar cycle. The peak of multiple spawnings coincided with declining spring tides of quarter moon periods. Maximum diameter of intra-ovarian, ripe oocytes (0.51–0.55 mm) occurred in synchrony with the quarter moon periods. Smaller oocytes (0.44–0.47 mm) were sampled during the new and full moon periods. Two structural analogues of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRHa) (des-Gly10, d -Ala6-LHRH ethylamide and d -Ala6, Pro9-Nethylamide-LHRH), in pelleted or dissolved form, induced mature female sea bass with a mean egg diameter of at least 0.40 mm to spawn at any day during the lunar cycle. The onset of spontaneous and LHRHa-induced spawnings occurred during low tides in the evening until dawn (from 19.00 to 05.00 hours). These results demonstrate that LHRHa can effectively induce mature sea bass to spawn independent of the highly predictable semilunar spawning rhythm. In addition, the occurrence of both spontaneous and hormone-induced spawnings at a precise period of the day suggest a tidal and diurnal cue entraining spawning of mature female sea bass.  相似文献

The reproductive behaviors of the marine goby Asterropteryx semipunctata were studied at Sakurajima, Kagoshima, Japan. Spawning occurred from late June to early October with a peak at 3–4 days after the full and new moon. This semi-lunar cycle might be advantageous to reducing nest-egg mortality but may not to larvae dispersion. Large males maintained spawning nests, and females spawned a whole clutch at a nest but with multiple males during a season. Females were less likely to be choosy due probably to a predation risk and/or nesting male shortage. Smaller males adopted sneaking tactics, and some of them became nesting males.  相似文献

We observed spawning behavior of the hawkfish Paracirrhites forsteri on reefs of southern Japan. Spawning generally occurred after sunset, prior to the full and new moon with semi-lunar spawning peak periodicity. No egg predation was observed in spawning after sunset, and high tide often occurred at dusk in the lunar phases. Thus, diel timing and lunar synchronicity may increase larval survival. We found that the mating activity tended to start earlier in the day during early mating season than during mid-to-late mating season. The advantages of the earlier start of mating activity were also examined in relation to adult biology contexts.  相似文献

Colour pattern characteristics and gonad histology were used to detect sexual dichromatisms in yellowfin grouper Mycteroperca venenosa and tiger grouper Mycteroperca tigris from the Campeche Bank, Mexico. Specimens were obtained from commercial catches between March and May during 2002 and 2004. All specimens were examined dead. Ninety-seven per cent of males had different sex-associated colour patterns. Male yellowfin grouper displayed a bright yellow blotch on both sides of the lower jaw while females retained a reddish lower jaw. Male tiger grouper had uniform dark pectoral fins while females had bright orange pectoral fins. In situ observations of live fishes at fishing sites showed the lower jaw and pectoral fin colourations to be clearly visible underwater at a depth of 35 m. All males of both species and most females (80% yellowfin grouper and 98% tiger grouper) were sexually active and probably caught during their spawning season. This suggests that distinct colourations observed for male M. venenosa and M. tigris may be seasonal displays associated with spawning. Both the lower jaw and pectoral fin colourations were still visible in dead fishes after several days on ice. Differences observed for ray length of exserted vertical fins in tiger grouper specimens were probably not a sex-associated characteristic.  相似文献

Summary Sixty female Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba Dana) spawned in shipboard experiments and the interval between egg-laying and ecdysis was noted. The number of eggs laid per female ranged from 263–3662, most females produced only one batch of eggs before moulting, and the post-spawn ovaries of all females contained few, if any, mature oocytes. As reported in other studies, the total number of eggs produced per female was not well correlated with body size. Females appeared to spawn at all times during the moulting cycle and although no diurnal rhythm in spawning was observed, moulting occurred mainly at night-time despite the animals being kept in near-constant darkness. Theory predicts that individuals should adopt counterstrategies against intersexual conflict with their mating partners if the counterstrategies are effective and cost-efficient. In fishes, males with parental care often cannibalize their own offspring, which reduces the female’s fitness and creates intersexual conflicts. Males of the goby Rhinogobius flumineus cannibalize more eggs in the nest when they have access to additional females prior to spawning. Thus, it is predicted that females will strategically avoid spawning with males that have high mate availability. In the present study, we experimentally tested this prediction. When sexual pairs were placed in tanks, most females (control females; 21/22) successfully spawned inside the nest. In contrast, when a gravid female (stimulus female) that was housed in a small transparent cage was shown to the experiment pairs prior to spawning, only about half of the females (experiment females; 16/29) spawned inside the nest; the remaining females released unfertilized eggs outside of the nest. Moreover, experiment females infrequently accepted and followed males into nests, and delayed spawning more often than control females. R. flumineus females prefer males that court frequently. Indeed, experiment females that infrequently received courtship tended to spawn outside of the nest. However, infrequent courtship alone could not explain outside-nest spawning, delay in spawning, or the shorter stay of females in nests. These results imply that the presence of a stimulus female dampens female spawning with males. We suggest that R. flumineus females may strategically reject or hesitate to spawn with males that have high mate availability, and that this spawning avoidance may be a counterstrategy against male filial cannibalism.  相似文献

We determined whether female Japanese medaka (Oryzias laiipes)copied the choice of other females or independently preferredactively courting males. We allowed focal females to observeand subsequently choose between a male that courted and potentiallyspawned with a receptive female and a male that courted andwas rejected by an unreceptive female. When the receptive femaledid not spawn, the focal female preferred the male with thehigher courtship rate; whereas when the receptive female spawned,the focal female preferred the spawning male. We observed spawning behaviors of the haremic cleaner wrasse Labroides dimidiatus at a rocky reef in southern Japan. Females released pelagic eggs daily from June to September after a spawning ascent by pairs. When the high tide occurred between noon and evening (quarter moon to new or full moon), they spawned around the time of the tide providing fast offshore currents. For the rest of the lunar cycle, spawnings occurred during late afternoon independent of the state of the tide at the time of day. This spawning pattern is quite different from that of conspecifics on coral reefs that always spawn around the high tide at all lunar stages to avoid potential egg predators. The wrasse ascended high in the water column, probably because of its predator-immune characters as a cleaner. The steep slope of the study site seemed to contribute to releasing gametes far above aggregating planktivores. Thus, gametes were not subject to heavy predation. Current direction might not always affect survival of spawned pelagic eggs on the temperate reefs so crucially as it does on coral reefs. We conclude that spawning during unfavorable tidal conditions during the daytime may be better than spawning during the best tidal condition in the crepuscular period when predation pressure on adults will be high. Intraspecific variation in the timing and location of spawning of the wrasse may result from different conditions for larval survival. A laboratory experiment was conducted by varying the undersurface area of nesting substratum and the number of females in an experimental tank to elucidate the determinants of the mating pattern in the stream goby, Rhinogobius sp. cross‐band type. Males with larger nests tended to attract two or more females to their nest in a tank. Moreover, males spawned simultaneously with multiple females and entire brood cannibalism by males was rarely observed under a female‐biased sex ratio. When males spawned with a single female with low fecundity, however, entire brood cannibalism occurred at a high frequency, suggesting that a male guarding a nest with fewer eggs consumes the brood. Therefore, spawning behaviour of females that leads to a large egg mass would decrease the risk of entire brood cannibalism. In this species, simultaneous spawning by multiple females in a nest serves as a female counter‐measure against entire brood cannibalism. These results suggest that a conflict of interest between the sexes through brood cannibalism is a major determinant of simultaneous spawning.  相似文献

Rabbitfishes are known to spawn synchronously around the species-specific lunar phase. It is considered that they perceive and utilize cues from the moon in order to be synchronized gonadal development and spawning with the lunar cycle. Using the golden rabbitfish, Siganus guttatus, which spawns synchronously around the first quarter moon during the reproductive season, we measured the fluctuation of melatonin levels and examined the response of the fish to moonlight intensity. Daily fluctuation of melatonin concentration in the blood of golden rabbitfish showed low levels during daytime and high levels during night-time, suggesting that melatonin functions in the perception and utilization of photoperiod. Plasma melatonin concentration at the new moon was higher than that at the full moon. When the fish were exposed to moonlight at midnight of the both moon phases, the melatonin concentrations decreased to the control levels. These results show that the fish possibly perceive moonlight intensity and plasma melatonin fluctuates according to 'lightness' at a point of night. At the first spawning period (experiment was started one month before the spawning), the fish reared under natural conditions spawned at the expected spawning dates, whereas the fish reared under the constant darkness and lightness of night did not spawn. At the second spawning period (experiment was started 2 weeks before the spawning), the fish reared under the conditions of natural and constant darkness of night spawned but not that of constant lightness of night. It is possible that night conditions are related to synchronous gonadal development and spawning in the golden rabbitfish.  相似文献
