Hammerhead sharks are among the most intriguing yet imperiled groups of large sharks globally. Until recently, our understanding of their biology, movements, diet, and life histories was challenged by a lack of studies. In recent years there has been a surge of published studies on this group of sharks, incorporating new information on age and growth, behavior, and the threats they face. Here we summarize and compare what is known on the biology and conservation of the three largest species of hammerhead sharks: the great hammerhead (Sphyrna mokarran), the scalloped hammerhead (Sphyrna lewini), and the smooth hammerhead (Sphyrna zygaena). We chose these species since they are the most well-studied of the hammerheads, and also because they are commonly captured in target and non-target fisheries worldwide. Thus, we also discuss population trends and the vulnerabilities of each species, and make recommendations for future studies on these fascinating and complex elasmobranch fishes.  相似文献

Although the Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida) has a pan-Arctic distribution, little is known about its occurrence in near-shore waters where this species is the principal prey for seabirds, marine mammals and other fish. Published research describes the scyphomedusa Cyanea capillata as an Arctic cod predator, and this paper presents observations from long-term investigations using active hydroacoustics that suggest the Arctic cod avoided C. capillata in two small bays of Cornwallis Island (Canadian High Arctic archipelago). Distribution patterns in echograms suggested that features such as boundary layer fronts restricted jellyfish movements and Arctic cod were often abundant on the side of fronts where C. capillata were absent. Thus, habitat partitioning allowed Arctic cod to share habitat with its predator, albeit exceptions to this sharing occurred when jellyfish abundance was high and Arctic cod were displaced. Thus, if a warmer Arctic triggers an increase in C. capillata abundance, it is possible that small-scale aspects of Arctic cod distribution could be affected. This in turn could have significant ripple effects within the Arctic food web, an additional and previously unrecognized consequence of climate change.  相似文献

Three oligo-raker species (?19 rakers on the first gill arch) of the genus Melamphaes out of the “M. typhlops” group are considered. The validity of M. indicus Ebeling is restored. This species inhabits equatorial and tropical waters of the Indian Ocean and the western part of the Pacific Ocean. M. eurous sp. n., which is related to M. indicus, is described from equatorial waters of the eastern part of the Pacific Ocean. M. typhlops (Lowe) inhabiting the northern part of the Atlantic Ocean, from the equatorial zone about to 45° N, is redescribed.  相似文献

Three oligo-raker species (≤19 rakers on the first gill arch) of the genus Melamphaes have been considered. A new species, M. papavereus, out of the group “M. typhlops” has been described from the Bay of Bengal of the Indian Ocean. M. simus and M. hubbsi out of the group “M. simus” have been revised. M. simus inhabits all oceans between 40° N and 40° S. M. hubbsi has been known from single specimens caught in the central part of the South Atlantic between 11° and 19° S.  相似文献

The non-native kelp, Undaria pinnatifida, is considered one of the world’s worst invasive species. The northeast Atlantic is a hotspot of Undaria invasion, yet there is limited knowledge on its invasion dynamics. In the UK its distribution is strongly associated with artificial structures, primarily marina and harbour pontoons, with relatively few records of Undaria on natural substrates. Here, the southwest UK is used as a case region, to explicitly link Undaria distribution-abundance patterns in artificial marina habitats with those in natural rocky reef habitats. Using a mixture of in situ recording and video survey techniques, Undaria was found at all thirteen marina sites surveyed; but in only 17 of 35 rocky reef sites, all of which were in 2 of the 5 larger systems surveyed (Plymouth Sound and Torbay). The distribution-abundance patterns of Undaria at reef sites were analysed using zero-inflated models. The probability of finding Undaria on rocky reef increased with increasing proximity to marinas with high abundances of Undaria. Total propagule pressure from marinas also increased the probability of occurrence, and was positively related to Undaria abundance and cover at reef sites. Increases in the cover of native kelps, Laminaria spp., and wave exposure at reef sites were linked to a reduced probability of Undaria occurrence, and lower abundance and cover. Identifying high risk areas, natural boundaries and factors affecting the spread and abundance of non-native species in natural habitats is key to future management prioritisation. Where Undaria is confined to artificial substrates management may be deemed a low priority. However, the results of this study suggest that controlling the abundance and propagule pressure in artificial habitats may limit, to some extent, the spillover of Undaria into natural rocky reef habitats, where it has the potential to interact with and influence native communities.  相似文献

American lobsters (Homarus americanus H. Milne Edwards, 1837) are imported live to Europe and should according regulations be kept in land-based tanks until sold. In spite of the strict regulations aimed specifically at preventing the introduction of this species into the NE Atlantic, several specimens of H. americanus have been captured in the wild, especially in Oslofjord, Norway since 1999. One of the great concerns is interbreeding between the introduced American species and the local European lobster, H. gammarus (Linnaeus, 1758). For this reason an awareness campaign was launched in 2000 focusing on morphologically “unusual” lobsters caught in local waters. Morphological characters have been based on colour and sub-ventral spines on the rostrum. Two samples of H. americanus were used for comparisons, as well as samples of European lobster from Oslofjord collected in 1992. Previous genetic analyses (allozymes, mtDNA and microsatellite DNA) have demonstrated that the American lobster is distinct from its European counterpart, with several additional alleles at many loci in addition to different allelic frequency distribution of alleles of “shared” alleles. During the present study, thirteen microsatellite loci were tested in the initial screening, and the three most discriminating loci (Hgam98, Hgam197b and Hgam47b) were used in a detailed comparison between the two species. A total of 45 unusual lobsters were reported captured from Ålesund (west) to Oslofjord (southeast) from 2001 to 2005 and these were analysed for the three microsatellite loci. Nine specimens were identified as American lobsters. Comparisons between morphological and genetic characteristics revealed that morphological differences are not reliable in discrimination the two species, or to identify hybrids. Further, some loci display almost no overlapping in allele frequency distribution for the reference samples analysed, thus providing a reliable tool to identify hybrids.  相似文献

Gobies that are phylogenetically related or coexist in the same marine and estuarine systems often exhibit abiotic and/or biotic habitat segregation. Thus, it is possible that species of Gymnogobius inhabiting the same riverine estuaries also exhibit abiotic and/or biotic habitat segregation. The goal of this study was to determine the differences in abiotic and biotic habitat use between these species by sampling goby and host shrimps, and by examining the physical environments of the rivers where these species are found. The surveys of goby and host shrimps were conducted in the estuaries of the Saba and Ibo rivers, which drain into the Seto Inland Sea, a body of water that separates three of the four main islands of Japan. We used hand nets and shovels to collect goby and host shrimps, and measured median sediment particle size, elevation, and salinity at each site. Generalized linear models (GLMs) were used to assess the preferences in abiotic and biotic habitat use by the goby species. Median particle size, salinity, and elevation were used as the abiotic environmental predictors, whereas the presence/absence of host shrimps were re-organized into four categories consisting of “Upogebia major” only, “Nihonotrypaea japonica” only, “Upogebia major & Nihonotrypaea japonica,” and “Upogebia yokoyai,” which were used as the biotic environmental predictors. The GLMs demonstrated that median particle size had the largest influence of the abiotic variables, with goby species segregating according to differences in sediments; moreover, there was some evidence suggesting that the host and symbiont do not always correlate at the species level. Our results indicated that although there is some overlap in abiotic and biotic habitat use among the four species of Gymnogobius, the differences were broad enough to provide an explanatory mechanism as to how these species can coexist in the same river systems.  相似文献

Spatial patterns of intertidal peracarids, associated with the alga Corallina elongata, were studied along the whole Iberian Peninsula. A total of 28,215 specimens were collected, comprising 78 different species (57 amphipods, 16 isopods, 4 tanaids and 1 cumacean), most of them with Atlantic-Mediterranean distribution (60%) and only 9% of Mediterranean endemics. Gammarids were dominant in abundance and number of species, representing more than 70% of the total peracarids. The most common species collected during the present study were the caprellid Caprella penantis, the gammarids Hyale schmidti, Hyale stebbingi, Jassa cf. falcata and Stenothoe monoculoides, the isopod Ischyromene lacazei and the tanaid Tanais dulongii. Caprellids and tanaidaceans presented their highest populations in the stations of the Strait of Gibraltar, whereas isopods were more abundant in Atlantic stations. Univariate analyses did not reflected differences in number of species, abundance and Shannon-Weaver diversity between Mediterranean and Atlantic. However, cluster analyses and Whittaker index, as measure of ß-diversity, showed a different species composition between Mediterranean and Atlantic and a replacement of species along the coast, especially at the Strait of Gibraltar. The turnover mainly affected species of the same genera, probably related with sympatric speciation. CCA and BIO-ENV analyses showed high correlations between environmental measures (especially conductivity) and peracarid distribution. Mediterranean species tolerated higher values of conductivity and temperature, while Atlantic species were associated with stations characterized by higher oxygen concentrations.  相似文献

Here, we report for the first time the genome-wide identification and expression analysis of the molecular chaperone BiP genes in Citrus. Six genes encoding the conserved protein domain family GPR78/BiP/KAR2 were identified in the genome of Citrus sinensis and C. clementina. Two of them, named here as CsBiP1 and CsBiP2, were classified as true BiPs based on their deduced amino acid sequences. Alignment of the deduced amino acid sequences of CsBiP1 and CsBiP2 with BiP homologs from soybean and Arabidopsis showed that they contain all the conserved functional motifs of BiPs. Analysis of the promoter region of CsBiPs revealed the existence of cis-acting regulatory sequences involved in abiotic, heat-shock, and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress responses. Publicly available RNA-seq data indicated that CsBiP1 is abundantly expressed in leaf, flower, fruit, and callus, whereas CsBiP2 expression is rarely detected in any tissues under normal conditions. Comparative quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) analysis of expression of these genes between C. sinensis grafted on the drought-tolerant “Rangpur” lime (C. limonia) and -sensitive “Flying Dragon” trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliata) rootstocks showed that CsBiP1 was upregulated by drought stress on the former but downregulated on the latter, whereas the CsBiP2 mRNA levels were downregulated on drought-stressed “Flying Dragon,” but remained constant on “Rangpur.” CsBiP2 upregulation was only observed in C. sinensis seedlings subjected to osmotic and cold treatments. Taken together, these results indicate the existence of two highly conserved BiP genes in Citrus that are differentially regulated in the different tissues and in response to abiotic stresses.  相似文献

Current ecological models predict that reef fish assemblages will be strongly influenced by habitat type. Here we test hypotheses about habitat types and abundance patterns of temperate reef fishes from broad spatial scales (100 s of km) to small spatial scales of metres to tens of metres. Habitat preferences are also described over long periods of time (22 years) for two abundant taxa. Patterns of distribution and abundance varied over ~ eight degrees of latitude (29.9–37.5°S) along the coast of New South Wales, Australia. Ophthalmolepis lineolatus (Labridae) preferred kelp and Barrens habitats and juveniles were most abundant in habitats rich in algae. This species also increased in abundance from North to South. In contrast, Hypoplectrodes maccullochi (Serranidae) were usually only found in the Barrens habitat and great variation was found among locations. Both taxa were most abundant on urchin grazed deep reefs (over 10 m deep). Habitat preferences of O. lineolatus and H. maccullochi appeared resistant to major environmental perturbations that included large El Niño events in 1991, 1998 and 2002. Home ranges of O. lineolatus varied from 52 m2 to 1,660 m2 and often overlapped; fish of all sizes were most abundant in algal dominated habitat. Limited movements and small home ranges (2.1–11.6 m2) combined with a strong affiliation for shelter indicated that most H. maccullochi are strongly site-attached. Habitat type is important to these taxonomically different fishes, but to varying degrees where H. maccullochi was more of a habitat specialist than O. lineolatus and would be more vulnerable to perturbations that alter Barrens. Changes in reef habitats will have a great influence on fish assemblages and this should also be considered in coastal planning (e.g. for Marine Protected Areas, MPAs) and the assessments of resistance and resilience of fishes to climate change.  相似文献

Peach belongs to the genus Prunus, which includes Prunus persica and its relative species, P. mira, P. davidiana, P. kansuensis, and P. ferganensis. Of these, P. ferganensis have been classified as a species, subspecies, or geographical population of P. persica. To explore the genetic difference between P. ferganensis and P. persica, high-throughput sequencing was used in different peach accessions belonging to different species. First, low-depth sequencing data of peach accessions belonging to four categories revealed that similarity between P. ferganensis and P. persica was similar to that between P. persica accessions from different geographical populations. Then, to further detect the genomic variation in P. ferganensis, the P. ferganensis accession “Xinjiang Pan Tao 1” and the P. persica accession “Xia Miao 1” were sequenced with high depth, and sequence reads were assembled. The results showed that the collinearity of “Xinjiang Pan Tao 1” with the reference genome “Lovell” was higher than that of “Xia Miao 1” and “Lovell” peach. Additionally, the number of genetic variants, including single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), structural variations (SVs), and the specific genes annotated from unmapped sequence in “Xia Miao 1” was higher than that in “Xinjiang Pan Tao 1” peach. The data showed that there was a close distance between “Xinjiang Pan Tao 1” (P. ferganensis) and reference genome which belong to P. persica, comparing “Xia Miao 1” (P. persica) and reference ones. The results accompany with phylogenetic tree and structure analysis confirmed that P. ferganensis should be considered as a geographic population of P. persica rather than a subspecies or a distinct species. Furthermore, gene ontology analysis was performed using the gene comprising large-effect variation to understand the phenotypic difference between two accessions. The result revealed that the pathways of gene function affected by SVs but SNPs and insertion-deletions markedly differed between the two peach accessions.  相似文献

Changes in the composition of biological communities can be elicited by competitive exclusion, wherein a species is excluded from viable habitat by a superior competitor. Yet less is known about the role of environmental change in facilitating or mitigating exclusion in the context of invasive species. In these situations, decline in a native species can be due to the effects of habitat change, or due to direct effects from invasive species themselves. This is summarized by the “driver-passenger” concept of native species loss. We present a multi-year study of tree squirrels that tested the hypothesis that tree canopy fragmentation, often a result of human development, influenced the replacement of native western gray tree squirrels (Sciurus griseus) by non-native eastern gray tree squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis). We tested this hypothesis along a continuum of invasion across three study sites in central California. We found that within the developed areas of the University of California at Santa Cruz campus and city of Santa Cruz, S. carolinensis excluded S. griseus from viable habitat. The competitive advantage of S. carolinensis may be due to morphological and/or behavioral adaptation to terrestrial life in fragmented hardwood forests. We classify S. carolinensis as a “driver” of the decline of native S. griseus in areas with high tree canopy fragmentation. Future habitat fragmentation in western North America may result in similar invasion dynamics between these species. Our study warrants consideration of existing and predicted interactions between potentially invasive species that co-occur with native species where land use change is proposed.  相似文献

“Air (aire, also aigre) in the body” is a frequent explanation of illness according to the traditional medical beliefs in Mexico. Anthropologists have generally scrutinized aire in the context of other common folk illnesses treated by traditional healers (curanderas). However, drawing on my research in the communities of Northern Oaxaca I suggest that aire occupies a more distinct position in the folk medical cosmology than it has usually been credited with. This distinction rests on the notion’s exceptional ambivalence and openness to multiple interpretations. “Air” is recurred to as the cause of illness mainly in situations where every other explanation, either “traditional” or “biomedical,” seems to be inadequate. The physical properties of air—its transparency, invisibility, apparent immateriality, near omnipresence, and virtual “nothingness”—render it a suitable explanation of the last resort. Local understandings of what aire “is” are often vague and elusive, and in many respects the term functions in folk medical discourse as an “empty signifier.”  相似文献

DNA sequences of Capitotricha bicolor from Quercus, Fagus sylvatica, Alnus alnobetula, and Nothofagus, and C. rubi from Rubus idaeus were obtained from apothecia to establish whether specimens from different hosts belong to separate species. The obtained ITS1–5.8S–ITS2 rDNA sequences were examined with Bayesian and parsimony phylogenetic analyses. Intra- and interspecific variation was also investigated based on molecular distances in the ITS region. The phylogenetic analyses supported the specific distinctness of Capitotricha rubi and the Capitotricha from Nothofagus, but also suggest specific distinctness between samples from Quercus, Fagus, and Alnus. The interspecific distances were larger than intraspecific distances for all examined units. The smallest distance was found between the “Alnus alnobetula” and “Fagus sylvatica” units. Two new sequences of Brunnipila are published. Capitotricha, Lachnum, and Erioscyphella are compared to each other based on hair and excipulum characteristics.  相似文献

We evaluated the effect of augmentative releases of Diachasmimorpha longicaudata (Ashmead), on the native parasitoid guild of Anastrepha spp. over a two year period in zones adjacent to mango commercial orchards in Chiapas, Mexico. We chose two 15 ha working zones, 15 km apart, harbouring fruit fly hosts of varying densities without chemical control. In 2013, parasitoids were released in zone “A” while zone “B” served as control. In 2014 zones were exchanged. As expected, releases of D. longicaudata significantly increased total parasitism, from around 0.5–5% to over 22%, but annual parasitism by native parasitoids was only significantly affected in zone “A”. The numbers of native parasitoids were higher in zone “A” in both years, and diversity (H′) was not affected by D. longicaudata releases in both zones. Our results suggest that releases of D. longicaudata affect the relative abundance but not the species richness of native parasitoids.  相似文献

Differential responses by species to modern perturbations in forest ecosystems may have undesirable impacts on plant-animal interactions. If such disruptions cause declines in a plant species without corresponding declines in a primary seed predator, the effects on the plant could be exacerbated. We examined one such interaction between Pinus albicaulis (whitebark pine), a bird-dispersed, subalpine forest species experiencing severe population declines in the northern part of its range, and Tamiasciurus hudsonicus (red squirrel), an efficient conifer seed predator, at 20 sites in two distinct ecosystems. Hypotheses about squirrel habitat preferences were tested to determine how changes in forest conditions influence habitat use and subsequent levels of predispersal cone predation. We performed habitat selection modeling and variable ranking based on Akaike’s information criterion; compared the level and variance of habitat use between two forest types (P. albicaulis dominant and mixed conifer); and modeled the relationship between P. albicaulis relative abundance and predispersal cone predation. T. hudsonicus did not demonstrate strong habitat preference for P. albicaulis, and thus, declines in the pine were not met with proportional declines in squirrel habitat use. P. albicaulis habitat variables were the least important in squirrel habitat selection. Squirrel habitat use was lower and varied more in P. albicaulis-dominant forests, and predispersal cone predation decreased linearly with increasing P. albicaulis relative abundance. In Northern Rocky Mountain sites, where P. albicaulis mortality was higher and abundance lower, squirrel predation was greater than in Central Rocky Mountain sites. In ecosystems with reduced P. albicaulis abundance, altered interactions between the squirrel and pine may lead to a lower proportion of P. albicaulis contributing to population recruitment because of reduced seed availability. Reducing the abundance of competing conifers will create suboptimal squirrel habitat, thus lowering cone predation in P. albicaulis and ensuring more seeds are available for avian dispersal.  相似文献

Quasi-synoptic surveys along the east coast of Australia between 28 and 34°S show that the heterotrophic dinoflagellate, Noctiluca scintillans, occurs along this entire stretch of the coast. Areas of relatively high abundance of Noctiluca were observed downstream of regions predisposed to current-induced upwellings as a consequence of alongshore topographic variations. High-resolution temporal and spatial sampling of upwelling events showed that Noctiluca was abundant (up to 28 cells l?1) within mature upwelled waters. A high proportion (>80%) of fed Noctiluca cells (cells with prey in their vacuoles) was observed in the mature upwelled waters indicating that the observed increase in abundance of Noctiluca was associated with increased feeding activity. The absolute abundance of Noctiluca in upwelled waters was, however, found to vary from one upwelling location to another and between seasons. In particular, highest abundances of Noctiluca were recorded south of 31.5°S, where the East Australian Current (EAC) characteristically separates from the coast. The high abundances partly arise from southward advection and retention of the Noctiluca cells, and partly from upwelling inshore of the separated EAC driven by cross-shelf boundary layer fluxes. The temperature of the EAC was also found to influence absolute abundances. Surface water temperatures during our summer cruise were anomalously high due to a strong La Niña phase, and up to 4°C warmer than during our spring cruise. We found that the warmer surface water temperatures were associated with relatively lower average abundances of Noctiluca in the near shore zone.  相似文献
