Neurons of the visual system are known to have receptive fields organized in retinotopic coordinates. We wanted to test whether visual neurons existed whose receptive fields were organized in spatial coordinates. Extracellular recordings from single cells were carried out in one area of the posterior parietal cortex (area V6) of a behaving macaque monkey. Among a great majority of retinotopically organized visual cells, neurons whose visual receptive field did not shift with gaze were also found. These cells responded to the visual stimulation of the same spatial position independently of the animal's direction of gaze, that is, their receptive field was anchored to an absolute spatial location. We suggest that these neurons directly encode visual space and are involved in programming visually-guided motor actions in space.  相似文献

The structure of receptive fields of single neurons in the lateral suprasylvian area of the cat's cortex was studied. Receptive fields of neurons in this area are larger (up to 2000 deg2 or more) than those of the visual projection cortex. A difference was found in the sizes of these fields of the same neuron when measured by presentation of a black object and spot of light. Experimental results showed that most neurons of the area (104 of 148) that are sensitive to visual stimulation respond clearly to flashes of a stationary spot of light. Because of this feature the structure of the receptive fields of the neurons were studied by point by point testing of their whole surface. Intensities of on- and off-components of on-off neurons were found to differ. Only 16% of receptive fields had equal numbers of discharges in on- and off-components of the on-off response. Dominance of one component was observed in 84% of on-off neurons. Receptive fields with several discharge centers are a characteristic feature of neurons in this area. A concentric organization of the receptive fields was found in 11% of neurons.L. A. Earlier studies recording single neuronal activity with bilateral receptive fields in the primary somatosensory cortex of monkeys and cats agreed that the bilateral receptive fields were related exclusively to the body midline and that the ipsilateral information reaches the cortex via callosal connections since they are dense in the cortical region representing the midline structures of the body while practically absent in the regions representing the distal extremities. We recently found a substantial number of neurons with bilateral receptive fields on hand digits, shoulders-arms or legs-feet in the caudalmost part (areas 2 and 5) of the postcentral gyrus in awake Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata). I review these results, discuss the functional implications of this bilateral representation in the postcentral somatosensory cortex from a behavioural standpoint and give a new interpretation to the midline fusion theory.  相似文献

Capsaicin was applied to the exposed radial nerve of adult flying foxes (n = 5) and cats (n = 2) while recording in primary somatosensory cortex from a single neuron with a receptive field on digits 1 or 2. Within four minutes of application of capsaicin the borders of these receptive fields dramatically expanded. In a further four flying foxes it was shown, with subcutaneous delivery just proximal to the receptive fields, that capsaicin need affect only afferents from the region of a neuron's receptive field to induce expansion. Capsaicin applied directly to a nerve, or subcutaneously in high concentrations, is a selective neurotoxin that rapidly prevents the propagation of action potentials in most C-fibres. The result provides a partial explanation for experiments involving the specific and complete denervation of receptive fields of neurons in primary somatosensory cortex. Such denervation does not lead to unresponsiveness but to immediate sensitivity to stimulation of areas surrounding the original fields. Thus it appears that some subclass of capsaicin-sensitive C-fibres provides a primary source for the masking inhibition that normally limits the extent of the receptive fields of cortical neurons.  相似文献

In this paper we address the question of how interactions affect the formation and organization of receptive fields in a network composed of interacting neurons with Hebbian-type learning. We show how to partially decouple single cell effects from network effects, and how some phenomenological models can be seen as approximations to these learning networks. We show that the interaction affects the structure of receptive fields. We also demonstrate how the organization of different receptive fields across the cortex is influenced by the interaction term, and that the type of singularities depends on the symmetries of the receptive fields.  相似文献

Characteristics of extra- and intracellular responses of 57 neurons in the vibrissal projection zone of the first somatosensory area of the cat cortex were investigated. The intensity of both excitatory and inhibitory unit responses was found to diminish during successive stimulation of different parts of the receptive fields in the direction from center toward periphery. Usually, when central parts of receptive fields were stimulated, inhibition in the unit responses was postexcitatory, whereas when peripheral parts were stimulated inhibition could precede excitation. The possibility of an increase in the role of interaction between excitatory and inhibitory processes arising in neurons in response to vibrissal stimulation with an increase in the distance from center to periphery of receptive fields of single cortical cells is discussed. Neurons found during one insertion of the microelectrode were seen to have common center for their receptive fields, but the diameters of the receptive fields of individual neurons could differ significantly. Moreover, during such vertical insertions responses of neurons with primary inhibition to the stimuli presented were recorded.A. A. Receptive fields of neurons of the rabbit visual cortex selective for stimulus orientation were investigated. These receptive fields were less well differentiated than those of the analogous neurons of the cat visual cortex (large in size and circular in shape). Two mechanisms of selectivity for stimulus orientation were observed: inhibition between on and off zones of the receptive field (sample type) and oriented lateral inhibition within the same zone of the receptive field (complex type). Lateral inhibition within the same zone of the receptive field also took place in unselective neurons; "complex" selective neurons differed from them in the orientation of this inhibition. A combination of both mechanisms was possible in the receptive field of the same neuron. It is suggested that both simple and complex receptive fields are derivatives of unselective receptive fields and that "complex" neurons are not the basis for a higher level of analysis of visual information than in "simple" neurons.A. We performed an imitation simulation of receptive fields (RF) of cat cortical neurons in the primary visual cortex, which were able to detect symmetrical and asymmetrical Y-like figures. We investigated the models of the receptive fields of neurons sensitive to Y-like figures through either the convergence from half-bar detectors or disinhibition mechanism. The model of an of the receptive fields of neurons sensitive to Y-like figures through either the convergence from half-bar detectors or disinhibition mechanism. The model of an-like figure detector on the basis of convergence from the angle and orientation detectors was advanced. Tuning of the simulated receptive fields to Y-like figures was compared with their tuning to cross-like figures. It was shown that the detectors of asymmetric Y-like figures are also detectors of a cross, whereas the detectors of symmetric Y-like figures are more sensitive to Y-like figures than to crosses. The features of the model critical for sensitivity to Y-like figures (the shape, localization, and weight of the RF zones) were specified.  相似文献

Current models of odor discrimination in mammals involve molecular feature detection by a large family of diverse olfactory receptors, refinement of molecular feature extraction through precise projections of olfactory receptor neurons to the olfactory bulb to form an odor-specific spatial map of molecular features across glomerular layer, and synthesis of these features into odor objects within the piriform cortex. This review describes our recent work on odor and spatial receptive fields within the anterior piriform cortex and compares these fields with receptive fields of their primary afferent, olfactory bulb mitral/tufted cells. The results suggest that receptive fields in the piriform cortex are ensemble in nature, highly dynamic, and may contribute to odor discrimination and odor memory.  相似文献

Cortical receptive fields represent the signal preferences of sensory neurons. Receptive fields are thought to provide a representation of sensory experience from which the cerebral cortex may make interpretations. While it is essential to determine a neuron's receptive field, it remains unclear which features of the acoustic environment are specifically represented by neurons in the primary auditory cortex (AI). We characterized cat AI spectrotemporal receptive fields (STRFs) by finding both the spike-triggered average (STA) and stimulus dimensions that maximized the mutual information between response and stimulus. We derived a nonlinearity relating spiking to stimulus projection onto two maximally informative dimensions (MIDs). The STA was highly correlated with the first MID. Generally, the nonlinearity for the first MID was asymmetric and often monotonic in shape, while the second MID nonlinearity was symmetric and nonmonotonic. The joint nonlinearity for both MIDs revealed that most first and second MIDs were synergistic and thus should be considered conjointly. The difference between the nonlinearities suggests different possible roles for the MIDs in auditory processing.  相似文献

In acute experiments on unanesthetized curarized cats the intensity functions, response thresholds, inhibition thresholds, and differential sensitivity of 96 neurons in the primary visual projection cortex were investigated by extracellular recording of unit activity during central and peripheral stimulation of their receptive fields. In darkness the neurons had wide threshold and above-threshold reliefs (3–30°). The threshold reliefs of the receptive fields of some cells were found to be V-shaped, whereas others were marked by alternation of zones of increased and reduced excitability. Sensitivity of both excitatory and inhibitory inputs of the receptive field as a rule was greatest in the center. Inhibitory inputs of different cortical neurons were much more standard and less sensitive to light, and they were mainly activated within the intermediate (mesoptic) range of brightnesses. During light adaptation the threshold contour of the receptive field narrows sharply, mainly because of the fall in sensitivity of its peripheral inputs. Compared with the lateral geniculate body and retina, the relative number of low-threshold elements, sensitivity in the system of inhibitory elements, and differential brightness sensitivity are greater in the cortex. The mechanisms of formation of receptive fields of cortical neurons and their modification during changes in the level of adaptation, and also the role of excitatory and inhibitory inputs of the cell in these effects are discussed.Institute of Higher Nervous Activity and Neurophysiology, Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Moscow. Static and dynamic properties of receptive fields of neurons in the lateral suprasylvian area of the cat cerebral cortex were studied. Neurons with different dynamic characteristics may have an identical static organization of their receptive fields; strict correlation is thus not found between these two characteristics of neurons in this area. Most black-sensitive neurons were found to have a receptive field with off-response. Stimulus contrast reversal tests showed that generation of responses to presentation of both black and light stimuli takes place as a result of excitation of the same area of the receptive field and is not due to spatially different on- and off-zones.L. Characteristic frequencies of neurons in the cat auditory cortex (area AI) whose receptive fields are located in different parts of the basilar membrane of the cochlea were determined in cats anesthetized with pentobarbital. The higher the characteristic frequency of a neuron in area AI, the nearer its receptive field lies to the base of the cochlea. Receptive fields of neurons with a characteristic frequency higher than 4 kHz lie on the first 10 mm of the basilar membrane. Receptive fields of neurons with a characteristic frequency below 4 kHz lie on the remaining 11–12 mm of the membrane. The effect of electrical stimulation of the center of the receptive field of a neuron corresponds to its response to a tone of characteristic frequency. The more the frequency of the acting tone differs from the characteristic frequency, or the further the point of stimulation from the center of the receptive field of the neuron, the less likely is the neuron to respond with an action potential. Neurons with a low characteristic frequency have wider receptive fields than neurons with a high characteristic frequency. Receptive fields of neurons with close characteristic frequencies on the basilar membrane overlap considerably. It was shown by the method of paired stimulation that excitation evoked in neurons in area AI by the action of a tone of a particular frequency is followed by long-lasting inhibition. This inhibition lasts longest and is most effective if a tone of the characteristic frequency is used.  相似文献

Many neurons in mammalian primary visual cortex have properties such as sharp tuning for contour orientation, strong selectivity for motion direction, and insensitivity to stimulus polarity, that are not shared with their sub-cortical counterparts. Successful models have been developed for a number of these properties but in one case, direction selectivity, there is no consensus about underlying mechanisms. We here define a model that accounts for many of the empirical observations concerning direction selectivity. The model describes a single column of cat primary visual cortex and comprises a series of processing stages. Each neuron in the first cortical stage receives input from a small number of on-centre and off-centre relay cells in the lateral geniculate nucleus. Consistent with recent physiological evidence, the off-centre inputs to cortex precede the on-centre inputs by a small (~4 ms) interval, and it is this difference that confers direction selectivity on model neurons. We show that the resulting model successfully matches the following empirical data: the proportion of cells that are direction selective; tilted spatiotemporal receptive fields; phase advance in the response to a stationary contrast-reversing grating stepped across the receptive field. The model also accounts for several other fundamental properties. Receptive fields have elongated subregions, orientation selectivity is strong, and the distribution of orientation tuning bandwidth across neurons is similar to that seen in the laboratory. Finally, neurons in the first stage have properties corresponding to simple cells, and more complex-like cells emerge in later stages. The results therefore show that a simple feed-forward model can account for a number of the fundamental properties of primary visual cortex.  相似文献

The Local Field Potential (LFP) is the analog signal recorded from a microelectrode inserted into cortex, typically in the frequency band of approximately 1 to 200 Hz. Here visual stimuli were flashed on in the receptive fields of primary visual cortical neurons in awake behaving macaques, and both isolated single units (neurons) and the LFP signal were recorded from the same unipolar microelectrode. The fall-off of single unit activity as a visual stimulus was moved from near the center to near the edge of the receptive field paralleled the fall-off of the stimulus-locked (evoked) LFP response. This suggests that the evoked LFP strongly reflects local neuronal activity. However, the evoked LFP could be significant even when the visual stimulus was completely outside the receptive field and the single unit response had fallen to zero, although this phenomenon was variable. Some of the non-local components of the LFP may be related to the slow distributed, or non-retinotopic, LFP signal previously observed in anesthetized animals. The induced (not time-locked to stimulus onset) component of the LFP showed significant increases only for stimuli within the receptive field of the single units. While the LFP primarily reflects local neuronal activity, it can also reflect neuronal activity at more distant sites, although these non-local components are typically more variable, slower, and weaker than the local components.  相似文献

The structures of limbic system have been found to modulate the auditory, visual and pain afferent signals in the related nuclei of thalamus. One of those structures is anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) that influences nocuous response of the pain-sensitive neurons in the ventropostero-lateral nucleus of thalamus. Thus, we inferred that ACC would also modulate tactile information at the thalamic level. To test this assumption, single units were recorded extracellularly from thalamic ventrobasal nucleus (VB). Tactile ON-OFF response and the relationship between different patterns of the responses and the parameters of tactile stimulation were examined. Furthermore, the influence of ACC on the tactile ON-OFF response was studied. ACC stimulation was found to produce a facilitatory effect on the OFF-response of ON-OFF neurons. It lowered the threshold of the off-response of that neuron, and therefore changed the response pattern or enhanced the firing rate of the OFF-response of the neuron. The study on receptive fields of ON-OFF neurons showed that the excitation of the ACC could change an ON-response on the verge of a receptive field into an ON-OFF response. The above results suggest that the ACC modulation sharpens the response of a VB neuron to a moving stimulus within its receptive field, indicating that the limbic system can modulate tactile ascending sensory information.  相似文献

The primary visual cortex is organized into clusters of cells having similar classical receptive field (CRF) properties. Nonclassical, extra-receptive fields (ERFs) can either inhibit or facilitate the response elicited by stimulation within the CRF. Here, we report that in the primary visual cortex of cat, neurons with similar inhibitory or facilitatory ERF properties are also grouped into clusters. These clusters are randomly distributed in all cortical layers, with no detectable relationship with orientation and ocular dominance columns. This functional organization of neurons with respect to ERF properties may allow an efficient processing of global visual information.  相似文献

Receptive fields of auditory cortical neurons were studied by electrical stimulation of nerve fibers in different parts of the cochlea in cats anesthetized with pentobarbital. The dimensions of the receptive fields were shown to depend on the topographic arrangement of the neuron in the auditory cortex. The more caudad the neuron on the cortical projection of the cochlea in the primary auditory cortex, the more extensive its receptive field. The receptive fields were narrowest in the basal turn of the cochlea and were symmetrical with respect to their center. It is suggested that the region of finest discrimination of acoustic stimuli in cats is located in the basal region of the cochlea, i.e., in that part of its receptor system which has the narrowest receptive field and is represented by significantly more (than the middle and apical regions of the cochlea) nerve cells in the primary auditory cortex [1].A.
