The Indian horseshoe crab, Tachypleus gigas (Müller), is a benthic feeder which subsists mainly on molluscs, decayed organic matter and polychaetes, in order of prevalence. A strong and positive preference was recorded for molluscs over other food organisms. The intensity of feeding was maximum during the north-east monsoon (November to January) in females and during the intermonsoon season (February to May) in males. The complete mitochondrial DNA sequence was determined for the Australian giant crab Pseudocarcinns gigas (Crustacea: Decapoda: Menippidae) and the giant freshwater shrimp Macrobrachium rosenbergii (Crustacea: Decapoda: Palaemonidae). The Pse gigas and Mrosenbergii mitochondrial genomes are circular molecules, 15,515 and 15,772 bp in length, respectively, and have the same gene composition as found in other metazoans. The gene arrangement of M. rosenbergii corresponds with that of the presumed ancestral arthropod gene order, represented by Limulus polyphemus, except for the position of the tRNALeu(UUR) gene. The Pse. gigas gene arrangement corresponds exactly with that reported for another brachyuran, Portunus trituberculatus, and differs from the M. rosenbergii gene order by only the position of the tRNAHis gene. Given the relative positions of intergenic nonoding nucleotides, the “duplication/random loss” model appears to be the most plausible mechanism for the translocation of this gene. These data represent the first caridean and only the second brachyuran complete mtDNA sequences, and a source of information that will facilitate surveys of intraspecific variation within these commercially important decapod species.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of temperature on the growth and development of embryonic and early larval stages of a western North American amphibian, the rough-skinned newt (Taricha granulosa). We assigned newt eggs to different temperatures (7, 14, or 21 °C); after hatching, we re-assigned the newt larvae into the three different temperatures. Over the course of three to four weeks, we measured total length and developmental stage of the larvae. Our results indicated a strong positive relationship over time between temperature and both length and developmental stage. Importantly, individuals assigned to cooler embryonic temperatures did not achieve the larval sizes of individuals from the warmer embryonic treatments, regardless of larval temperature. Our investigation of growth and development at different temperatures demonstrates carry-over effects and provides a more comprehensive understanding of how organisms respond to temperature changes during early development.  相似文献

Hummingbirds (family Trochilidae) represent an extreme outcome in vertebrate physiological design and are the only birds capable of sustained hovering. The giant hummingbird (Patagona gigas) is the largest trochilid, with a mass of ~20 g, and is found over an altitudinal range from 0 to 4,500 m above sea level. We report here measurements of daily, basal, and hovering rates of oxygen consumption in the giant hummingbird; compare these values with data from smaller hummingbirds; and assess overall metabolic and allometric limits to trochilid body size. The sustained metabolic scope (i.e., the ratio of daily energy expenditure to basal metabolic rate) in the giant hummingbird is higher than that in smaller hummingbirds but lies below a proposed theoretical maximum value for endotherms. Scaling exponents in the allometric relationships for different modes of energetic expenditure were comparable, suggesting that the giant hummingbird, although a clear outlier in terms of body size, does not obviously deviate from metabolic relationships derived from other trochilid taxa.  相似文献

Summary Gametes and developing larvae of the polychaete Galeolaria caespitosa were examined by scanning electron microscopy. The sperm display a primitive morphology. When treated with 0.33 M CaCl2, they release a branched acrosomal process. At spawning, the polygonal oocytes have a granular surface made up of spherules and the tips of microvilli. The oocyte coat develops a ridged appearance as the oocyte rounds up. At fertilization, the microvilli are withdrawn from the coat surface. Microvilli again appear on the coat surface during the trochophore stage, but the egg coat appears to be retained as the larval cuticle until the demersal stage. The surface of the larva now shows many microvilli. Details of the organization of several ciliary structures are clarified. Moreover, the present study shows rapid, sequential development of paired setal sacs, with the most anterior pair appearing first.  相似文献

为确定拟目乌贼发育生长最佳温度条件,采用单因子试验研究了不同温度(15、18、21、24、27、30、33℃)对拟目乌贼胚胎发育及幼体生长的影响.结果表明:不同温度对拟目乌贼胚胎发育及幼体影响显著(P<0.05).胚胎发育适宜温度为21~30℃,最适温度为24℃.最适温度下孵化率达(93.3±2.9)%,培育周期为(24.33±0.58)d,孵化周期为(6.00±1.00)d,卵黄囊完全吸收率为(96.4±3.1)%,初孵幼体体质量为(0.258±0.007)g.有效积温模型为N=284.42/(T-12.57).幼体生长适宜温度为21~30℃,最适温度为24~27℃.最适宜温度下幼体存活率达70.0% ~73.3%,特定生长率为2.4%~3.8%.  相似文献

  • 1.1. Larvae of the bromeliad crab, Metopaulias depressus Rathbun, were reared in the laboratory, and changes in dry weight (W), ash-free W (AFW), carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, protein, lipid, carbohydrates and respiration rate were measured during development from hatching to metamorphosis.
  • 2.2. Development was successful in rain-water from bromeliads (pH < 5–6), but not in river water from the same region (pH 8). It is abbreviated, with two non-feeding zoeal stages (2.5–3.5 days each) and a feeding megalopa (8.5–10 days). Development to metamorphosis can also be completed in the absence of food (facultative lecithotrophy).
  • 3.3. Dry weight and other absolute biomass values per individual vary significantly between different hatches, whereas changes in the relative (% of W or AFW) composition follow quite invariable patterns: ash increases from hatching through the first part of megalopa development, organic biomass decreases concurrently.
  • 4.4. Elemental and biochemical data show that lecithotrophy of the zoeal stages as well as continued endotrophic development in the megalopa depend chiefly on degradation of lipid reserves and less on protein. No significant growth was observed in organic constituents when food was available, but without food the megalopa reached metamorphosis with only half the lipid and less than two thirds the protein of fed siblings.
  • 5.5. The relationship between C and lipid is similar in M. depressus larvae as in planktotrophic marine crab larvae, whereas that between N and protein differs; it indicates the presence of unusually large quantities of unidentified non-protein N.
  • 6.6. Exuvial losses of late premoult biomass or energy are very low in the zoeal stages (2 and 3%), but increase in the megalopa (16% in W, 10% in C, 7–8% in N, H and energy).
  • 7.7. Respiration rate per individual increases gradually during larval development (0.6–0.8 μg O2/hr). Starved megalopa larvae reveal lower individual but higher W-specific metabolism than fed larvae.
  • 8.8. Bioenergetic traits of abbreviated larval development are discussed in relation to those known from regular (planktotrophic marine) development of brachyuran crabs. M. depressus is highly adapted to life and development in a physically extreme terrestrial environment.

采用实验生态学的方法研究了不同温度和体重对克氏双锯鱼仔鱼呼吸和排泄的影响。结果表明,在23、26和29℃下,仔鱼个体日常呼吸率和排氨率与鱼体重呈幂函数(R=aWb)关系,即鱼体重越大其呼吸率和排氨率越大,b值随温度升高而增大,分别为0.8873,0.9033和0.9323(呼吸率),以及0.7625,0.8012和0.8278(排氨率)。温度和体重对克氏双锯鱼仔鱼个体呼吸率和排氨率的影响可用复合线性公式表示:RR=0.042(±0.007)W0.889(±0.026)×e0.122(±0.005)T,ER=0.002(±0.000)W0.797(±0.029)×e0.115(±0.007)T。比体重呼吸率和排氨率在相同温度条件下随个体增长而降低;在整个仔鱼期,比体重呼吸率和排氨率随温度升高而增加。克氏双锯鱼仔鱼呼吸和排泄Q10值在26—29℃较低,其可能是克氏双锯鱼仔鱼生长发育的最佳温度范围。克氏双锯鱼仔鱼在温度23—29℃时O/N范围为52—57,表明在温度23—29℃时克氏双锯鱼仔鱼代谢底物除了蛋白质外,脂肪和碳水化合物为能源也占了比较大的比例。  相似文献

Larvae ofElminius modestus (Darwin) from four different populations (Portobello, Leigh, Doubtless Bay [New Zealand] and Helgoland [North Sea]) were reared at different salinity and temperature combinations. The larvae ofE. modestus from Helgoland developed successfully at a wide range of temperature (6° to 24 °C) and salinity (20 to 50 S). Mortality was highest at 10 S; only at 12° and 18 °C did a small percentage develop to the cypris. The larvae from New Zealand were reared at a temperature range of 12°–24 °C at 20, 30 and 40 S; mortality increased in all populations at all salinities with decreasing temperature and was extremely high at 12 °C and 40 S. The temperature influence on larval duration could be described in all cases by a power function. No significant differences in temperature influences on developmental times between the tested salinities were found, except for the Portobello population at 20 S. Significant differences were found in the temperature influence on larval development between the populations from Helgoland and the North Island of New Zealand (Leigh, Doubtless Bay). No differences were found between the Helgoland and Portobello population. The pooled data for the temperature influence on the larval development of the three tested New Zealand populations at 20, 30 and 40 S and the pooled Helgoland data at 20, 30 and 40 S show highly significant differences.Larval size (stage VI) was influenced by experimental conditions. The larvae grew bigger at low temperatures and attained their maximum size at 30 S (Helgoland). There was a strong reduction in larval size at temperatures from 18° to 24 °C. The larvae of the New Zealand populations were smaller than those from Helgoland. The greatest difference in size existed between the larvae from Portobello and Helgoland.  相似文献

The Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, is extensively cultivated and represents an important economic activity. Oysters are reared in estuarine areas, subjected to various biotic and abiotic factors. One of the limiting factors in aquaculture is mortality outbreaks, which may limit oyster production, and the causes of these outbreaks are not completely understood. In this context, the effects of temperature and salinity on Pacific oyster, C. gigas, haemocytes, were studied. Haemocytes are the invertebrate blood cells and thus have been shown to be involved in defence mechanisms. Flow cytometry was used for monitoring several haemocyte parameters. An increase of temperature induced an increase of haemocyte mortality, in both in vitro and in vivo experiments. Temperature modulated aminopeptidase activity. An in vitro decrease of salinity was associated with cell mortality. During the course of in vivo experiments, an increase of phagocytic activity was reported at 15 per thousand and 50 per thousand. Environmental physical parameters may modulate haemocyte activities.  相似文献

In a 5-ha area of primary lowland rain forest in Borneo, we observed four polydomous colonies of the night-active giant ant Camponotus gigas. The nonoverlapping, three-dimensional territories in the canopy had a ground size up to 0.8 ha. C. gigas showed a distinct territorial behavior: (1) specific “barrack” nests, especially containing many majors, were situated at the borders and were established during long-term territorial conflicts; (2) trunk trails were regularly patrolled by majors that attacked alien conspecifics and some other ant species violently; and (3) sentinels, often involved in long-enduring conflicts with neighboring ant colonies, defended the borders at bridgeheads. Interspecific conflicts with sympatric Camponotus species always led to violent, “bloody” fights of all castes. Intraspecific conflicts, however, were solved by ritual fights (“front leg boxing”) of majors. C. gigas performed a de-escalation strategy to end short periods of true intraspecific “ant war” that we provoked experimentally. Artificially induced ritualized combats continued over weeks also in the absence of baits, indicating that borders may become established by long-term conflicts of attrition. We discuss the differences between ritual fights in desert and rain-forest ants and apply Lanchester's theory of battles to our findings. Received: October 17, 2000 / Accepted: May 14, 2001  相似文献

Herbivore feeding induces chemical defence responses in plants. In this study we investigate how herbivore-induced changes in cotton plants, Gossypium hirsutum L., influence the oviposition behaviour and larval development of Spodoptera littoralis Boisd. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). In two-choice experiments female moths preferred to oviposit on small plants (3–4 leaves) that had been fed on by 3rd to 4th instar larvae (72%) over non-damaged control plants. However, when using larger plants (8 to 10 true leaves) the preference was reversed, with only 31% of the eggs deposited on the induced plants. The same trend was found with plants that had been given a similar level of damage by 6th instar larvae. However, the difference between the treatments was in both cases smaller with only 60% of the eggs deposited on the preferred plant treatment. If cotton plants subjected to artificial damage were compared with undamaged plants, none of the treatments were preferred for oviposition. No significant difference was found in larval weight, pupal weight, survival, or development time, between larvae reared their entire development on leaves from induced or from non-induced plants.  相似文献

The male brooding behaviour ofLethocerus deyrollei was investigated. Eggs were laid as masses on sticks above the water surface. Males did not leave the sticks until the eggs hatched. They mainly stayed at the bases of the sticks in water in the day, and frequently climbed up at night covering the egg-masses with their bodies. Eggs with male brooding had a 94.3% hatching rate. Eggs without male brooding failed to hatch and desiccated. Eggs with brooding considerably increased in wet weight in development; eggs without brooding decreased in wet weight. Eggs without male brooding and artificially supplied with water had a 93.2% hatching rate. Male brooding is considered to supply eggs with water.  相似文献

The shore crab, Carcinus maenas L. (Portunidae), is a coastal and estuarine species, which can live and reproduce under brackish water conditions; freshly hatched larvae have been observed in the field at salinities below 15‰. In the present laboratory study, the tolerance of hypo-osmotic stress was experimentally investigated in early larvae of a marine (North Sea) population of C. maenas reared at four different salinities (15, 20, 25, 32‰). Two and 4 days after hatching, the Zoea I larvae were moult-staged microscopically, and their rates of respiration and growth (changes in dry weight, W, carbon, C, nitrogen, N, and hydrogen, H) were measured. Survival and development were monitored until the megalopa was reached: 15‰ did not allow for development beyond the first zoeal stage, while metamorphosis to the megalopa was reached at salinities ≥20‰. At 20‰, development was significantly delayed and mortality enhanced as compared with 25 and 32‰. Rates of growth and respiration decreased during exposure to reduced salinities ≤25‰. Hence, the suppression of growth could not be explained as a consequence of enhanced metabolic losses per larva. Instead, a partial C budget indicates that the Zoea I larvae suffered from decreased capabilities of assimilating ingested and subsequently converting assimilated matter to tissue growth. Net growth efficiency (K2, C-based) was at 25 and 32‰ initially high (>60% during the postmoult and intermoult stages of the Zoea I moult cycle), but decreased during the later stages (down to ≤30% in premoult). An inverse pattern of C partitioning was observed at ≤20‰, with initially low K2 values (≤21% during the first 2 days of the moult cycle), and a later increase (up to ≥46% in premoult). Thus, larval growth was initially suppressed under conditions of reduced salinity, but this was later (during premoult) partially compensated for by an increase in C assimilation and K2. Our observations indicate that Zoea I shore crab larvae react during the late stages of their moulting cycle less sensitively against reduced salinities than during postmoult and intermoult. This suggests that the transition between moult cycle stages C and D0 may be a critical point for effects of hypo-osmotic stress, similarly as already known in relation to effects of nutritional stress. Negative effects were found also when freshly hatched Zoea I shore crab larvae were exposed only transitorily (for 24–72 h) to 20‰, with significantly lower rates of survival, development, growth, respiration, and K2. These effects increased with increasing duration of initial exposure to reduced salinity.  相似文献

Berried females of Macrobrachium rosenbergii (De Man) from Anuenue stock were allowed to incubate their eggs at three different temperatures (25,29, and 31°C). The newborn larvae were reared in the laboratory from hatch through completion of the metamorphosis to postlarva in 30 combinations of temperature (22–34° C) and salinity (0–34 ppt). Survival and stage attainment rates were observed. Multiple linear regression analysis and response surface methodology were used to estimate the response of larvae to these different temperature and salinity combinations. Dissimilarities in the response of zoeae from the three egg incubation temperatures were found. Larvae from eggs incubated at 25° C during embryonic development showed tolerance to a broader range of temperature and salinity conditions than those incubated at 29 or 31 °C. The response also changed with the ontogeny of the larvae. The zoeae are considered to have undergone acclimation during embryonic development, thus eliciting a different response.  相似文献

Eggs of the hard clam, Mercenaria mercenaria (L.), and the bay scallop, Argopecten irradians (Lamarck), were graded to three size categories, split into replicates and these were replicate-sampled. A chi-square analysis compared the proportion of larvae (48-h survival) to the proportions of eggs in each initial replicate experiment. Statistically significant differences attributed to egg size were found for both species. Large eggs survived better than small eggs, while those of intermediate size showed no difference between expected and observed survival.  相似文献
