Dust samples collected in 61 homes of patients with mite allergies and 11 homes of non-allergic people as controls were examined for antigen levels of Dermatophagoides farinae Hughes and Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Trouessart) to reveal the current distribution of allergenic mites in homes in Japan. Patient homes had higher antigen levels than control homes in comforters and pillows but not in futons, earpets, tatamis and wooden floors. Samples with antigen levels of 10 g m-2 were more frequent in and around summer (approximately April-October) than other seasons of the year in most materials and the differences between patient and control homes in comforters and pillows observed in yearly totals was also observed during this period. Wooden structures showed higher antigen levels than concrete structures in comforters, futons, pillows, carpets and tatamis in patient homes. Mite contamination in patient homes in relation to environmental factors was discussed.  相似文献

Passenger trains were surveyed for contamination with Dermatophagoides farinae Hughes and Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Trouesart) mites in Japan. A total of 492 dust samples were collected from upholstered seats in six commuter trains, one long-distance express train and three night trains in October, 1996 and January, April, and July, 1997. Mite antigen levels contained in fine dust fractions of these samples were measured by an enzyme- linked immunosorbent assay. Most samples obtained from commuter trains showed relatively high mite antigen levels of >10gm–2 (corresponding to >100 mites). Express and night trains showed lower antigen levels per square meter, but higher mite antigen levels per gram of fine dust than commuter trains, indicating relatively high mite antigen densities. Seasonal comparisons indicated that commuter trains showed the highest mean antigen level per square meter in winter (January), whereas the highest antigen level per gram of fine dust was observed in summer (July) in express and night trains.  相似文献

We investigated male clustering behaviour in large bulk cultures of the American house dust mite, Dermatophagoides farinae. Aggregation in the colony was restricted to males only. The water loss rates for individual males in isolation and as a group of six were determined. Males in a group of six retained water nearly twice as effectively (they had lower rates of net water loss) than individuals. Clustering is thus an adaptive behaviour to help reduce water loss. Because the clustering response was observed exclusively by males, this behaviour may serve an additional purpose that involves a pheromone system.  相似文献

Halacarid mites have successfully invaded the sea and approximately 56 species colonized the freshwater. Invasion from the sea into continental waters probably started in the Mesozoic or Pre-Mesozoic and went on in the following epochs. The number of genera (14) and species (34) recorded from the Palaearctic is remarkably higher than that of other geographical regions. The aim of the paper was to determine the infestation parameters and species composition of eriophyoid mites for different parts of Norway spruce and Scots pine as well as for different age groups of the trees. The observations on the occurrence of the mites were conducted in 2004 and 2005 in 4 locations distributed in various regions of Poland, accounting for 11 environments (location x year). Three plant age groups were studied: (1) adult trees: 40–60 years old, additionally divided into three levels: top, middle and bottom; (2) young trees: 6–10 years old; and (3) seedlings: 2–3 years old. The same number of species (five) occurred on each coniferous tree, but only one, the rarest, was common on both tree species. Out of 500 samples for each species, mites were found on 279 pine (55.8%) and 252 spruce samples (50.2%). No tendency for the mites to choose any particular level on Scots pine and Norway spruce was observed. In addition, no tendency for the mites to choose trees from any of the age groups was observed for both Scots pine and Norway spruce, in the latter case the result obtained also for mite species subdivided into vagrant and refuge-seeking ones. Final conclusions were that in case of adult trees samples can be taken from the bottom part of a tree; however, sampling from young trees growing among adult trees may be seen as the most efficient sampling method.  相似文献

The European and American house dust mites, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and D. farinae, have a huge impact upon human health worldwide due to being the most important indoor trigger of atopic diseases such as asthma, rhinitis and atopic dermatitis. Preceding studies have shown that the behavioural response of house dust mites towards volatile chemicals from food sources can be assessed using a Y-tube olfactometer assay. In the current study, we used this assay to investigate, for the first time, the ability of the essential oil of the catmint plant, Nepeta cataria (Lamiaceae), known to repel other ectoparasites affecting human and animal health, to interfere with the attraction of D. pteronyssinus and D. farinae towards a standard food source (fish flakes). Two distinct chemotypes (A and B), enriched in the iridoid compounds (4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactone and (4aS,7S,7aS)-nepetalactone, and the sesquiterpene (E)-(1R,9S)-caryophyllene, were used. Initial assays with a hexane extract of fish flakes (FF extract) confirmed attraction of mites to this positive control (P < 0.001 and P < 0.05 for D. pteronyssinus and D. farinae respectively), but when presented in combination with either N. cataria chemotype, tested across a range of doses (10, 1, 0.1 and 0.01 μg), decreasing attraction of mites to their food source was observed as the dose augmented. Our study shows that N. cataria, enriched in iridoid nepetalactones and (E)-(1R,9S)-caryophyllene, exhibits potent repellent activity for house dust mites, and has the potential for deployment in control programmes based on interference with normal house dust mite behaviour.  相似文献

Laboratory crossing experiments indicate that populations of A. limonicus sensu lato collected from cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) in Brazil (Cruz das Almas) and Colombia (Palmira and Monteria) are conspecific and different from A. limonicus Garman & McGregor sensu stricto collected in Riverside, California, USA and Jaguariuna, Brazil. A. limonicus s.l. did not cross with A. tenuiscutus, A. rapax or A. limonicus s.s.. A. limonicus s.s. did not cross with A. rapax. Populations of A. aerialis, A. anonymus and A. idaeus from Colombia are conspecific with Brazilian populations of these species.  相似文献

Jerking, a behavior involving a pronounced and often repeated lunging of the body, was studied in larvae among seven species of phytoseiid mites, Euseius finlandicus, Galendromus occidentalis, Neoseiulus californicus, Neoseiulus fallacis, Phytoseiulus macropilis, Phytoseiulus persimilis and Typhlodromus pyri, and in the nymphal stages of N. fallacis. This behavior was observed in larvae of six of the seven species and in all active immature stages of N. fallacis. Jerking was usually triggered by direct contact with a con- or heterospecific mite, although jerking occurred occasionally without direct contact in N. fallacis larvae. The larval jerking tendency (the mean fraction of contacts resulting in jerking) of a species was significantly correlated with a tendency to congregate with conspecifics. Congregated larvae often probed their immediate area and each other with the front legs, repeatedly jerking in response to contact with neighboring larvae. Species with larvae having higher jerking tendencies also jerked more repeatedly per jerking event. Among species, there was no consistent relationship between jerking tendency and larval age. Larvae of N. fallacis had a higher tendency to jerk than protonymphs and deutonymphs, and they had both the highest jerking and congregating tendencies among larvae of all species studied. An individual was more likely to jerk when approached by another mite than when it initiated contact, and when observed in N. fallacis larvae that initiated contact, jerking was sometimes aggressive. Jerking N. fallacis larvae experienced fewer and shorter periods of probing by the mouthparts and fewer attacks from cannibalistic adult females than anesthetized larvae that were unable to jerk.  相似文献

This paper reviews the occurrence of mites of the infraorder Astigmata in situations involving the legal system, particularly in the area of medicocriminal entomology. Species in the families Acaridae, Lardoglyphidae and Histiostomatidae are encountered in stored food products and in vertebrate carrion, including human remains. Some of these species are incidentals, whereas others are obligate necrophages. Phoretic associations between these mites and insects allows for rapid dispersal and colonization of such patchy resources.  相似文献

Gravid female phytoseiid mites, Amblyseius fallacis (Garman), were selected for resistance to permethrin using a table-top Petri dish (PD) technique. After 55 selections, the LC50 of the R population increased 964-fold to 12 241 p.p.m. (PD) and 3.6-fold to 167 p.p.m. by a slide-dip (SD) method. A genetic analysis was conducted to examine the mode of inheritance by a series of single-pair reciprocal interstrain crosses and backcrosses of female F1 progeny. Concentration-mortality regressions (PD) for parental populations showed a 69.4-fold difference between R and S strains. Regressions for F1 females resulting from both interstrain crosses were intermediate between parental strains and not significantly different, showing no obvious maternal effect. Resistance in the R strain was not completely dominant or recessive and the estimated dominance, D, for the F1 females from combined data of both reciprocal crosses was-0.18, for the female R x male S cross it was 0.24 and for the female S x male R cross it was-0.01. We concluded that more than one gene was responsible for the resistance in the selected R strain. No incompatibility was observed in any reciprocal interstrain crosses or backcrosses between the S strain and R strain.  相似文献

A faunal list of oribatid mites collected from the summit of the Cheviot, Northumberland, is given, together with notes on the taxonomy and distribution of several of the species. Special attention is paid to the Arctic-alpine and European-alpine species and the list provides further support for the view that the upland areas of Britain are characterized by a common group of oribatid species. It is suggested that these species may be cold hardy or cold tolerant with relatively high supercooling points, enabling them to survive the winter at these higher altitudes.  相似文献

Predator mites of Phytoseiidae family are among the most important biocontrol agents in the world. These beneficial mites are considered as natural enemies of many pests and herbivore mites, and can feed on different growth stages of pests (egg, larva or nymph). Five species of Phytoseiidae mites were found during a survey conducted on tea plants, Camellia sinensis (Theaceae), in the Mazandaran and Guilan Provinces in the north of Iran, on the coast of the Caspian Sea, the major tea-growing region of Iran. The host specificity and population genetic structure of the symbiotic water mites Unionicola foili from the host mussel Utterbackia imbecillis and Unionicola formosa from the mussels Pyganodon cataracta, Pyganodon grandis and Anodonta suborbiculata were examined over a broad geographical scale in order to determine the extent to which specialization by these water mites is structured geographically. The behavioural responses of U. foili and U. formosa were highly host-species specific, with adults of both species exhibiting negative phototaxis in the presence of a chemical factor from the species of mussel with which the mites had been associated in the field. The photobehaviour of these water mites in the presence of water from a non-host mussel varied depending on the species in question. Although U. foili from U. imbecillis exhibited negative phototaxis in water modified by A. suborbiculata, mites from this latter host did not exhibit a directional response in U. imbecillis water. Unionicola foili and U. formosa from A. suborbiculata were positively phototactic when they were exposed to water modified by either species of Pyganodon. The photoresponse of U. formosa from P. cataracta and P. grandis was positive in the presence of water modified by U. imbecillis and A. suborbiculta. However, these mussel-mites showed no directional response in water modified by their alternate species of Pyganodon. Unionicola foili and the host-associated populations of U. formosa were examined for allozyme variation at eight loci to determine the pattern and degree of genetic variation. There was a high degree of genetic differentiation when mite populations from the two species of Pyganodon were compared with U. foili or U. formosa from A. suborbiculata. These populational groupings were fixed for different alleles at two enzyme loci. The results of this study indicate that populations of U. formosa from P. cataracta and P. grandis are reproductively isolated from U. foili from U. imbecillis and from U. formosa from A. suborbiculata and contend that host specificity is an important mechanism in restricting gene flow among these populational groupings. The water mites of running waters in The Netherlands have been surveyed for the period 1987–1992. The aims were to investigate their present distribution, to make a comparison with historical data and to identify differences in water mite assemblages on a regional scale. The investigation covered 821 sites in eight different drainage areas. In spite of the scarcity of historical data, it may be concluded that in the course of this century about 40% of rheophilic water mites have become extinct. In canalized streams lentic species are dominant. In springs and spring streams, lotic species can survive, but the assemblages consist mainly of euryoecious water mite species.Multivariate techniques were used to show regional differences. These differences are mainly determined by stream hydraulics. The area of Zuid-Limburg can easily be demarcated by its relatively high number of rheophilic species. The man-made streams (sprengen) at the east side of the Veluwe area are characterized by a number of species which indicate undisturbed circumstances. The response of water mites to pollution of running waters is discussed.  相似文献
