The postglacial distribution of mallomonadacean scales is described from Upper Wallface Pond, a small, acidic lake in the High Peaks Region of the Adirondack Mountains. Similar to studies in other lake regions, Mallomonadaceae were present at only very low numbers during the pond's early postglacial history, but then populations developed rapidly about 11 000 B.P. The generalist Mallomonas crassisquama dominated the scale assemblage in all but the most recent sediments. Changes in species composition and abundance that occurred prior to this century can be related to events occurring in the pond's catchment, such as successions in terrestrial vegetation. The most striking changes in mallomonadacaean distributions occurred over the last 30 years, with the dominance of taxa tolerant of very acid (pH < 5.0) waters. The most likely cause for this recent decline in lakewater pH is acidic precipitation.  相似文献

Swimbladder walls of lake charr, Salvelinus namaycush, from Great Slave Lake (GSL), Northwest Territories, Canada, were unusually thick for the species. The thinnest sections of the GSL bladders (mean = 2.44mm, range = 1.1–4.4mm) were significantly thicker (P = 0.001) than lake charr swimbladders collected from two small Province of Ontario lakes (means = 0.65 and 0.92mm), whose populations were assumed to be representative of the species. Variance in wall thickness was also greater in GSL lake charr than in charr from two small lakes (P < 0.02). Within individuals, some of the GSL bladder walls were markedly irregular in thickness, but whether these anomalies exist in situ or were artifacts of preservation remains uncertain. The bulk of the tissue in the thickest sections of the GSL swimbladders was in the tunica serosa (outer layer). The extent of the modification of the GSL swimbladders is extraordinary for northern fishes in postglacial lakes.  相似文献

The perennial herbs Silene vulgaris and S. uniflora are closely related, partially sympatric and interfertile, yet morphologically distinct. We used nuclear (allozyme) and plastid (polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment length polymorphism) DNA markers to investigate whether these species have a shared history of postglacial colonization and hybridization in Europe, as inferred from large‐scale patterns of geographic variation. The majority of plastid haplotypes and allozyme alleles were widespread and patchily distributed within both species and there was no geographic structure in the distributions of shared allozymes or haplotypes. The mosaic variation is consistent with a scenario in which repeated episodes of interspecific hybridization pre‐dated the largely allopatric range expansion of the two species during the postglacial period. Our overall results are not consistent with a scenario of extensive hybridization and introgression during the postglacial range expansion of the species or within their current areas of sympatry, but we found some evidence for local, postglacial evolution and hybridization in the Baltic region. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 166 , 127–148.  相似文献

Specialization for the use of different resources can lead to ecological speciation. Accordingly, there are numerous examples of ecologically specialized pairs of fish “species” in postglacial lakes. Using a polymorphic panel of single nucleotide variants, we tested for genetic footprints of within‐lake population stratification in nine‐spined sticklebacks (Pungitius pungitius) collected from three habitats (viz. littoral, benthic, and pelagic) within a northern Swedish lake. Analyses of admixture, population structure, and relatedness all supported the conclusion that the fish from this lake form a single interbreeding unit.  相似文献

Ancient lakes have been recognized as “long‐term isolated islands” in terrestrial ecosystems. Lake Biwa, one of the few ancient lakes that formed around 4 million years ago, harbors many coastal species that commonly inhabit seashores. The beach pea, Lathyrus japonicus, is a typical coastal species of this freshwater lake, where morphological, physiological, and genetic differentiations have been reported between Biwa and coastal populations. Whether Biwa populations were isolated for long periods throughout Pleistocene climatic oscillations and subsequent range shifts is unclear. We assessed population genetic structure and demography of beach pea in this ancient freshwater lake using the sequences of eight nuclear loci. The results of STRUCTURE analyses showed evidence of admixture between Biwa and coastal populations, reflecting recent gene flow. The estimated demographic parameters implemented by the isolation with migration model (IM model) revealed a recent divergence (postglacial period) of Biwa populations, with some gene flow from Biwa to coastal populations. In addition, Biwa populations were significantly smaller in size than the ancestral or coastal populations. Our study suggests that a Holocene thermal maximum, when transgression could allow seeds from coastal plants to access Lake Biwa, was involved in the origin of the Biwa populations and their genetic divergence. Thus, coastal populations might have migrated to Lake Biwa relatively recently. Our study concluded that ancestral migrants in Lake Biwa were derived from small founding populations and accelerated genetic isolation of Biwa populations during short‐term isolation.  相似文献

Ecologically, morphologically and genetically distinct populations within single taxa often coexist in postglacial lakes and have provided important model systems with which to investigate ecological and evolutionary processes such as niche partitioning and ecological speciation. Within the Salmonidae, these species complexes have been well studied, particularly within the Coregonus clupeaformisC. laveratus (lake and European whitefish, respectively) group, but the phenomenon has been less well documented in the other whitefish genera, Prosopium and Stenodus. Here, we examined the morphology, feeding biology and genetic structure of three putative forms of the pygmy whitefish, Prosopium coulterii (Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1892), first reported from Chignik Lake, south‐western Alaska, over 40 years ago. Field collections and morphological analyses resolved a shallow water (< 5 m depth) low gill raker count form (< 15 first arch gill rakers), a deepwater (> 30 m), low gill raker form and a deepwater, high gill raker count (> 15 gill rakers) form. The two low gill raker count forms fed almost exclusively on benthic invertebrates (mostly chironomids), while the deepwater, high gill raker count form fed almost exclusively on zooplankton; differences in diet were also reflected in differences both in δ13C and δ15N stable isotopes. All three forms were characterized by the same major mitochondrial DNA clade that has been associated with persistence in, and postglacial dispersal from, a Beringian glacial refugium. Analysis of variation at nine microsatellite DNA loci indicated low, but significant differentiation among forms, especially between the two low gill raker count forms and the high gill raker count form. The extent of differentiation along phenotypic (considerable) and genetic (subtle) axes among the Chignik Lake forms is similar to that found among distinct taxa of Prosopium found in pre‐glacial Bear Lake (Utah–Idaho, USA) which is probably at least ten times older than Chignik Lake. Our analyses illustrate the potential for the postglacial differentiation in traits subject to divergent natural selection across variable environments.  相似文献

The species composition, distribution and diversity of macrophytes in Lake Ziway were determined at the end of dry and wet seasons along nine littoral sites during 2010 using a belt transect method. Some physicochemical parameters were also measured. Fourteen macrophyte species were identified with low species diversity for the lake (H' value of 1.805). The macrophyte species composition of the lake has undergone many changes during the last few decades. Arundo donax, which was never reported earlier, attained the highest relative density (30.7%) and frequency (30.5%) in this study, followed by Echinochloa colona, Potamogeton schweinfurthii, Cyperus articulatus, Typha latifolia and Cyperus papyrus. The average densities of A. donax, C. articulatus, E. colona and Pistia stratiotes were positively correlated with nutrients, whereas the density of the other species had negative correlation with physicochemical variables (CCA). Generally, the present macrophyte composition and abundance indicates healthy ecological condition of the lake. But if nutrient levels continue to increase and water levels continue to decline, we expect further changes in macrophyte composition and especially a shift towards invasive floating species.  相似文献

The potentially important role of northern microrefugia during postglacial dispersal is challenging the view of southern Europe as a refuge and source area of European biota. In groundwaters, large geographic ranges of presumably good dispersers are increasingly suspected to consist of assemblages of cryptic species with narrow ranges. Moreover, a large species range, even when confirmed by molecular evidence, tells us little about the spatiotemporal dynamics of dispersal. Here, we used phylogenetic inferences, species delineation methods and Bayesian phylogeographic diffusion models to test for the likelihood of postglacial colonization from distant refugia among five morphospecies of Proasellus (Isopoda, Asellidae). All morphospecies except one were monophyletic, but they comprised a total of 15–17 cryptic species. Three cryptic species retained ranges that spanned a distance >650 km, similar to that of the nominal morphospecies. Bayesian diffusion models based on mitochondrial markers revealed considerable spatiotemporal heterogeneity in dispersal rates, suggesting that short‐time dispersal windows were instrumental in shaping species ranges. Only one species was found to experience a recent, presumably postglacial, range expansion. The Jura and Alpine foothills probably played a major role in maintaining diversity within Proasellus in northern regions by acting both as diversification hotspots and Pleistocene refugia. Gaining insight into the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of dispersal rates revealed contrasting colonization dynamics among species that were not consistent with a global postglacial colonization of Europe from distant refugia.  相似文献

Trophic niche overlap in native and alien fish species can lead to competitive interactions whereby non‐native fishes outcompete indigenous individuals and eventually affect the viability of natural populations. The species Erythroculter mongolicus and Erythroculter ilishaeformis (belonging to the Culterinae), which are two commercially important fish species in the backwater bay of the Pengxi River in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), were threatened by competition from the non‐native Coilia ectenes (lake anchovy). The latter is an alien species introduced into the lower reaches of the Yangtze River in China and now widespread in the TGR. The trophic consequences of non‐native lake anchovy invasion for E. mongolicus and E. ilishaeformis were assessed using stable isotope analysis (δ13C and δ15N) and associated metrics including the isotopic niche, measured as the standard ellipse area. The trophic niche of native E. mongolicus had little overlap (<15%) with the alien fish species and was significantly reduced in size after invasion by lake anchovy. This suggests that E. mongolicus shifted to a more specialized diet after invasion by lake anchovy. In contrast, the trophic niche overlap of native fish E. ilishaeformis with the alien fish species was larger (>50%) and the niche was obviously increased, implying that fish in this species exploited a wider dietary base to maintain their energetic requirements. Thus, marked changes for the native E. mongolicus and E. ilishaeformis were detected as the trophic consequences of invasion of non‐native lake anchovy.  相似文献

Lake Victoria holds a young but species‐rich assemblage of cichlid fishes, which form a monophyletic assemblage with additional species from surrounding water bodies, termed the Lake Victoria superflock. Lake Victoria is surrounded by smaller lakes that are somewhat disconnected from the main lake. Lake Kanyaboli is such a small lake, having markedly reduced species diversity, in part comprised of Lake Victoria species and endemics. Here, we studied the modern haplochromine component of the cichlid fauna, represented by Lipochromis maxillaris, Astatotilapia nubila, Xystichromis phytophagus and Astatotilapia sp. ‘Bigeye’, as well as a number of unidentified modern haplochromine specimens. We used landmark‐based geometric morphometrics to study the degree of morphological divergence among those young entities. Twenty landmarks and 14 interlandmark distances were used for shape analysis. Multivariate analysis revealed significant differences between all four species, but principal component analysis and canonical variate analysis did not clearly discriminate between A. nubila and X. phytophagus, demonstrating great overall morphological similarity despite clear dietary differences. Besides coloration there was sexual dimorphism in body proportions, so that only male individuals were analysed further. In all four species, the observed similarities and differences in body shape conform to the type of ecological specialization of the fish. Most unidentified specimens overlapped the range of A. nubila and X. phytophagus, while the assignment test based on the canonical variate analysis suggested 70% of the three overlapping entities as separate units. To test their reproductive distinctness and to demonstrate potential hybridization, nuclear genetic data are needed.  相似文献

Parasite communities of perch were studied in a natural lake (Vetämäjärvi) and two reservoirs (the Kyrkösjärvi and Liikapuro reservoirs) located in Western Finland. All water bodies studied are small, shallow and humic. However, the reservoirs are more acidic than the lake (pH 5.9 and 5.3 vs. 6.4). Altogether, 18 parasite species were found, but the component communities were reduced in the harsh conditions of the reservoirs (12 and six species) as compared with the lake (17 species). In addition, the mean number of metazoan parasite specimens per fish was markedly lower in the reservoirs (64.3 and 14.3 specimens) than in the lake (116.1 specimens). Our prediction on the depauperation of parasite communities in reservoirs as compared with the lake was confirmed. Many ectoparasite groups were rare and most of the digenean parasites using molluscs as their intermediate host were absent from the reservoirs due to the inability of molluscs to tolerate the acidic water. The only digenean parasite found in the less acidic reservoir was Bunodera luciopercae. There were also species that preferred reservoirs as was expected. The protozoan ciliate Capriniana piscium benefiting acidic water and Acanthocephalus lucii, due to the abundance of its intermediate host, were most prevalent in the reservoir conditions.  相似文献

The population dynamics of an exotic cladoceran (Daphnia lumholtzi Sars) and a native cladoceran (Daphnia ambigua) were studied over a 12 month period in subtropical Lake Okeechobee, Florida (USA), to quantify the extent of invasion of the exotic species and compare ecological niches. Daphnia lumholtzi accounted for up to 70% of the Daphnia assemblage during the summer months (June-August), while D.ambigua accounted for up to 97% of the Daphnia assemblage from fall to spring (October-April). The densities of the two species were inversely corelated. The exotic species was most concentrated in the shallower, warmer, north and south ends of the lake during the summer. It also was present, but at much lower densities, in the central lake region during the fall. The native species displayed a ubiquitous distribution throughout the lake during spring and winter, but was concentrated in the deeper, cooler, central region during the summer. Relationships of the two species with environmental conditions indicate that water column temperature might affect the seasonal and spatial distribution of the two Daphnia species. The results also indicate that D.lumholtzi may be filling a 'vacant' seasonal or spatial niche when conditions are unfavorable for D.ambigua.   相似文献

The hypolimnetic protozoan plankton of a eutrophic lake   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
The seasonal distribution of benthic species in the water column above and below the thermocline in a small eutrophic lake is described. During summer stratification populations of Spirostomum spp, Loxodes spp., Plagiopyla and Deltopylum become established in the plankton on or below the oxycline/thermocline. At shallow sites no migration occurred and populations of the migratory species in the benthos were sparse, with the exception of Plagiopyla which occurred in high densities in the sediment. Two distinct planktonic populations are established during stratification: an epilimnetic community of obligate planktonic ciliates and a hypolimnetic community of benthic migrants.  相似文献

1. This study deals with the distribution of euglenoid morphospecies along the length of the Lower Paraná River floodplain. Six sites located in the Paraná River, Estevez stream and Montiel shallow lake were surveyed monthly from May 1995 to April 1996. 2. Eighty‐eight infrageneric taxa were registered though the total density percentage of euglenoids seldom exceeded 15% of total phytoplankton. The increasing species richness towards the lake is mostly the result of a high contribution of species of Trachelomonas and naked infrageneric taxa of Euglena, Lepocinclis and Phacus, while the distribution of Strombomonas species along the transect is fairly constant. 3. The richness of euglenoid morphospecies follows a pattern opposite to that found for the entire phytoplankton community. The distribution of euglenoids differs among the three habitats defined in this study: river, stream, shallow lake. These differences depend on the hydraulic condition of each habitat, as revealed by canonical correspondence analysis. 4. The degree of association with each type of aquatic habitat varied among the species and differed between water phases. Strombomonas fluviatilis was equally constant along the length of the ecotone, while S. girardiana and S. scabra were particularly associated with the Paraná River and P. longicauda, L. truncata, T. hispida and T. similis with the lake. 5. The flood pulse establishes a clear pattern both in species richness and abundance of euglenoids. The number of species recorded during high water was more than twice that recorded during low water.  相似文献

The fish stock of a deep temperate, mesotrophic lake was sampled at different depths using a fixed‐frame fry trawl, during two nights in mid‐September 2009. Additionally, horizontal and vertical hydroacoustics were used simultaneously to evaluate fish abundance and biomass estimates obtained by the trawl. Roach Rutilus rutilus and smelt Osmerus eperlanus were the dominant species of young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) fish in the trawl catches from the surface layers (0–9 m). Bleak Alburnus alburnus dominated the catch of older fish in the upper part of the surface profile (0–6 m). Around the thermocline (9–13 m) smelt dominated the catches of both the YOY and older fish. Beneath the thermocline (13–36 m) vendace Coregonus albula dominated the catch of YOY fish, and smelt was the only species of older fish in the trawl catches. Species composition, abundance and biomass of the YOY and older fish were heterogeneous throughout the depth profiles of the lake, but only abundance differed significantly between the layers. The hydroacoustics gave relatively similar estimates of abundance and biomass to those obtained by the trawl in all the depths sampled. Our results indicate that there is a clear separation of small fish of different species along the vertical profile of a deep temperate lake during the night, and an unequal vertical distribution of fish abundance and biomass. The similarity of the trawl and hydroacoustics estimates of abundances and biomass indicated that the trawl sampling did not cause important avoidance reactions of small fish during the night in this deep temperate lake (© 2012 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The number of individuals and species of zooplankton were sampled concurrently with Hydrilla biomass and water quality for one year in a small, eutrophic central Florida lake. Throughout the study, rotifer species and individuals dominated the zooplankton. The abundance of the zooplankton tended to remain high when Hydrilla biomass was at its seasonal low during late winter and early spring. When hydrilla growth increased in the late spring and summer months causing a decrease in total alkalinity, specific conductivity, water color, turbidity, orthophosphate and chlorophyll a concentrations; the abundance of the zooplankton declined. During this time, there was a shift from limnetic to littoral species, principally rotifers. Hydrilla growth did not affect the mean number of cladoceran or copepod species, but may have led to an increase in rotifer species.  相似文献

The phylogeographic structures of taiga species often support the hypothesis of East Palaearctic refugia for these taxa, but the phylogeographic structures of northern temperate and southern boreal bog species are still poorly understood. Therefore, we analysed the genetic diversity and differentiation of a stenotopic damselfly, Nehalennia speciosa, across its trans‐Palaearctic range by means of sequencing two mitochondrial gene fragments, 16S rRNA‐ND1 and cytochrome c oxidase II. Only four single nucleotide polymorphisms were detected over the 1130 sequenced nucleotides. This low genetic diversity and differentiation and thus the lack of phylogeographic structure imply postglacial expansion from a single Würm Ice Age refugium, most likely located in the Far East of Asia, i.e. Manchurian refugium. From here, the species could have colonized large parts of the Palaearctics, including Europe, during the postglacial.  相似文献

Synopsis Cyprinid fishes apparently constituted the major part of the original fish fauna in Lake Luhondo, Rwanda, at least until 1934. At that time only three species, all cyprinids, were known from the lake:Barbus neumayeri, a small barbel, very common in the lake (described from the lake asBarbus luhondo) and two larger cyprinid species:Barbus microbarbis andVaricorhinus ruandae. These two large species were probably not very common in the lake. Between 1935 and 1938 some youngTilapia were introduced into Lake Luhondo. Since then and certainly since 1952 the large cyprinids seem to have disappeared completely from the lake. The smallBarbus neumayeri has become extremely rare; at present it survives only in some small tributaries of the lake. In the lake itselfTilapia andHaplochromis species are now the dominant fauna. The aims of this study included: specifying values of ecological parameters and Ostracoda species characteristic for different types of plant habitats occurring in lake systems, determining the impact of mud presence on the taxonomic structure and density of the ostracods, tracing seasonal changes in the structures of Ostracoda assemblages identifying the species typical of particular seasons. Various types of rushes and underwater meadows were taken into consideration as lake microhabitats. The research was conducted in the shallow Lake Œwidwie (NW Poland). Multivariate (constrained) ordination methods were used to analyse the relationships between species composition and environmental variables. In the lake and its margins 31 species of the Ostracoda were identified. The development of water vegetation during the vegetation season was conducive to growth in ostracod density. The accessibility of mud in plant habitats had a favourable effect on the general density of ostracods. Species which preferred a high mud content in their habitats included: Cypria ophtalmica, C. exsculpta and Physocypria kraepelini. Species typically encountered in underwater meadow habitats were: Cyclocypris ovum and Cypridopsis vidua. Underwater meadows of charophyte were characterized by the highest ostracod density in the whole lake system, with the average of 7860 ind. m–2 and the maximum of 17 470 ind. m–2. Species typically encountered in rush habitats included Notodromas monacha, Dolerocypris fasciata and Metacypris cordata. (© 2012 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

The southern European peninsulas (Iberian, Italian and Balkan) are traditionally recognized as glacial refugia from where many species colonized central and northern Europe after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). However, evidence that some species had more northerly refugia is accumulating from phylogeographic, palaeontological and palynological studies, and more recently from species distribution modelling (SDM), but further studies are needed to test the idea of northern refugia in Europe. Here, we take a rarely implemented multidisciplinary approach to assess if the pygmy shrew Sorex minutus, a widespread Eurasian mammal species, had northern refugia during the LGM, and if these influenced its postglacial geographic distribution. First, we evaluated the phylogeographic and population expansion patterns using mtDNA sequence data from 123 pygmy shrews. Then, we used SDM to predict present and past (LGM) potential distributions using two different training data sets, two different algorithms (Maxent and GARP) and climate reconstructions for the LGM with two different general circulation models. An LGM distribution in the southern peninsulas was predicted by the SDM approaches, in line with the occurrence of lineages of S. minutus in these areas. The phylogeographic analyses also indicated a widespread and strictly northern‐central European lineage, not derived from southern peninsulas, and with a postglacial population expansion signature. This was consistent with the SDM predictions of suitable LGM conditions for S. minutus occurring across central and eastern Europe, from unglaciated parts of the British Isles to much of the eastern European Plain. Hence, S. minutus likely persisted in parts of central and eastern Europe during the LGM, from where it colonized other northern areas during the late‐glacial and postglacial periods. Our results provide new insights into the glacial and postglacial colonization history of the European mammal fauna, notably supporting glacial refugia further north than traditionally recognized.  相似文献
