Multifrequency numerical simulations of the light-coupling efficiency of a prismatic bioinspired compound lens (BCL) of silicon atop a thick silicon substrate were carried out within the framework of geometrical optics. Comparison was made with untextured and groove-textured silicon substrates as well as with untextured silicon substrates with a double-layer anti-reflection (DLAR) coating. Taking into account the broadband nature and the sea-level spectral irradiance of the insolation flux, and averaging over all admissible directions and both linear polarization states of the incident light, we found that the light-coupling efficiency can be almost doubled with respect to the untextured silicon substrate and enhanced by about a third with respect to a DLAR-coated untextured silicon substrate, by adopting a DLAR-coated silicon BCL.  相似文献

In the late growing season of apples, most eggs of the codling moth, Cydia pomonella L. (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae), of the second and third generations are deposited directly on fruits. The apple fruit surface is densely covered by three-dimensional micro- and nanoprojections, the epicuticular wax crystals, emerging from an underlying wax film. These epicuticular waxes render the apple fruit surface hydrophobic, which could affect the attachment of insect legs and eggs to it. A better survival of the codling moth offspring is expected to be ensured by the selection of suitable oviposition sites by females, as well as by a proper adhesion of deposited eggs to these sites. In this study, we investigated egg adhesion of the codling moth to the fruit surface of different cultivars of the domestic apple, Malus domestica Borkh., by measuring the pull-off force required to detach eggs from fruits. Since surface characteristics may influence insect egg adhesion, the information about morphological and physicochemical properties of the fruit surface is crucial for understanding oviposition site selection by females. In the present study, surface morphology, wettability, and free surface energy of the apple cultivars ‘Boskoop’, ‘Elstar’, ‘Golden Delicious’, ‘Jonica’, and ‘Topaz’ were analyzed. Eggs adhered tightly to the fruit surface of all apple cultivars tested: pull-off forces averaged 63.9 mN. These forces are four- to tenfold stronger than those previously measured on adaxial and abaxial leaf surfaces of the identical apple cultivars. The mechanisms used by the moth to fix its eggs on the waxy surface of apple fruits, and the influence of fruit surface properties on egg glue adhesion are discussed. Furthermore, the results are debated in the context of the oviposition site selection by females, and its role in offspring survival of the second and third generations of the codling moth.  相似文献

The dependence of optical reflectivity and wettability on the surface topography of 32 species of cicada wing membranes has been investigated using UV-visible spectrophotometry, contact angle measurements and environmental scanning electron microscopy. The nanoscale hexagonally close packed protrusions have been shown to exhibit an anti-reflection and in some cases an anti-wetting function. The parameters of the structures were measured to be 77-148 nm in diameter, 44-117 nm in spacing and 159-481 nm in height. The transmittance spectrum and static contact angles were measured. At a wavelength range of 500-2500 nm, only minor differences in the anti-reflection performance were observed for each cicada species ascribed to the mechanism of impedance matching between cuticle and air. The transmittance properties of cicada wings were altered successfully through the scanning probe microscope-based manipulation by reducing the protrusion height via the contact mode. A near linear dependence was found between a decrease in protuberance height and a resulting increase in reflectance intensity. A diversity of wettability was observed with contact angles varying from 56.5° to 146.0°. Both effects of anti-reflection and wettability are dependent on the height of protrusions. The anti-reflection is insensitive when the wavelength is larger than the lateral feature size of the nanostructure. The stronger hydrophobic properties are generally associated with a larger diameter, closer spacing and greater height of protrusions when the wing membrane is intact.  相似文献

The influence of human plasma proteins (fibrinogen, albumin and fibronectin) on the adherence of Staphylococcus epidermis to teflon, polyethylene, polycarbonate and bovine pericardium was studied in an in vitro quantitative assay by scintillation counting. Bacterial adhesion was generally reduced by the presence of protein during the adherence assay except in the case of bovine pericardium, in which adherence remained almost unaffected. The effect of these plasma proteins on bacterial surface properties resulted in strong increases of surface charge as measured by ion-exchange chromatography and with no effect on hydrophobicity, estimated as contact angles. Adherence was not found to be correlated with these two properties, suggesting that bacteria-surface interactions must not be simplified to the influence of interfacial forces.  相似文献

Experimental data are analyzed that concern the effect of zoogenic debris on the properties of soddy deep podzolic soils and raw-humus brown soils characteristic of southern taiga forests in the Yenisei region of Siberia. It is shown that the influence of excrements of Siberian moth larvae on the soil microflora lasts for two or, at most, three growing seasons. Zoogenic plant debris falling on the ground surface during tree stand defoliation is a short-acting but powerful stimulant of biological activity in the litter; hence, it has a considerable effect on soil properties. This effect is enhanced by changes in ecological conditions that occur upon defoliation. The influence of the cenotic factor on biogenic soil properties is manifested more strongly in the organogenic horizons. The communities of microorganisms involved in the nitrogen and carbon cycles are dominated by prototrophic forms in the normal fir forest and by pedotrophic forms in the forest defoliated by pests.  相似文献

Molecular monolayers of poly-in-benzyloxycarbonyl-l-lysine were studied at the air/water interface. Deuterium-exchange measurements and the surface area of the monolayer are consistent with a structure consisting of condensed ordered arrays of alpha-helices. Collapsed films removed from the surface and air-dried were examined by polarized infrared spectroscopy and electron diffraction and found to consist of molecules in the alpha-helical conformation. There is no indication of a conformational change during compression of the monolayer, and a series of transitions found in the force-area curve are interpreted as the consecutive formation of additional layers of molecules. Some of the factors that influence this almost perfect plastic behaviour are discussed.  相似文献

Light on the moth-eye corneal nipple array of butterflies   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The outer surface of the facet lenses in the compound eyes of moths consists of an array of excessive cuticular protuberances, termed corneal nipples. We have investigated the moth-eye corneal nipple array of the facet lenses of 19 diurnal butterfly species by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscope, as well as by optical modelling. The nipples appeared to be arranged in domains with almost crystalline, hexagonal packing. The nipple distances were found to vary only slightly, ranging from about 180 to 240 nm, but the nipple heights varied between 0 (papilionids) and 230 nm (a nymphalid), in good agreement with previous work. The nipples create an interface with a gradient refractive index between that of air and the facet lens material, because their distance is distinctly smaller than the wavelength of light. The gradient in the refractive index was deduced from effective medium theory. By dividing the height of the nipple layer into 100 thin slices, an optical multilayer model could be applied to calculate the reflectance of the facet lenses as a function of height, polarization and angle of incidence. The reflectance progressively diminished with increased nipple height. Nipples with a paraboloid shape and height 250 nm, touching each other at the base, virtually completely reduced the reflectance for normally incident light. The calculated dependence of the reflectance on polarization and angle of incidence agreed well with experimental data, underscoring the validity of the modelling. The corneal nipples presumably mainly function to reduce the eye glare of moths that are inactive during the day, so to make them less visible for predators. Moths are probably ancestral to the diurnal butterflies, suggesting that the reduced size of the nipples of most butterfly species indicates a vanishing trait. This effect is extreme in papilionids, which have virtually absent nipples, in line with their highly developed status. A similar evolutionary development can be noticed for the tapetum of the ommatidia of lepidopteran eyes. It is most elaborate in moth-eyes, but strongly reduced in most diurnal butterflies and absent in papilionids.  相似文献

Male and female offspring of rats given antiandrogens, the steroidal BOMT or the non steroids DIMP or Sch 13521, daily during the last third of pregnancy were studied. Detailed examinations were made of the genital tract of male, and of the nipples of male and female offspring. A) Male offspring. 1) Genital tract of newborn and 31-91 day old males : Modifications of the development of accessory sexual tissues were found in all treatment groups. As indicated by the severity of deviations from normal (morphology and weight of sex accessories), the antiandrogenic effect of the preparations, in the doses given to the mother rats, increased from BOMT (50 or 75 mg/day) via Sch 13521 (30 mg/day) and DIMP (50 or 60 mg/day) to Sch 13521 (60 mg/day). 2) Nipples of 10-60 day old males : Whole mount preparations were made unilaterally of the row of 6 mammary glands with nipples. The number of intact and abnormal nipples, respectively, was recorded. The relation between intact and abnormal nipples served as indicator of the efficiency of the antiandrogenic substances studied. The result showed that the antiandrogenic effect increased from BOMT to Sch 13521, 60 mg, in the same order as that arrived at from studies of the genital tract. The combined results obtained from the male offspring indicated that the tissues of the genital region, the growth and differentiation of which was most readily impaired by antiandrogens, were the same as those known from other work to be stimulated most easily in female rat fetuses by testosterone. B) Female offspring. Nipples of 31-60 day old females were judged from whole mount preparations and recorded as in the males. The nipples of adult virginal females were examined macroscopically. The same procedure was applied to lactating females, but the results were controlled in consecutive lactational periods and at autopsy. The 3 groups of females showed uniformly that 1) offspring of rats given BOMT during pregnancy had many (about 50 per cent) malformed nipples and 2) the treatment of mother rats with DIMP or Sch 13521 did not influence the development of nipples in female offspring. The result was assumed to be due to an androgenic effect of the steroidal antiandrogen, BOMT, on the nipple anlage.  相似文献

The properties of a second metal chelator-sensitive proteinase (metalloproteinase 2) from the larvae of the webbing clothes moth, Tineola bisselliella, have been studied. The pH optimum for casein digestion was 9-4 and the enzyme showed high stability between pH 8 and 11, but very poor stability at acid pH. The proteinase was inhibited by EDTA, but not by an EDTA-calcium complex. EDTA inhibition could be reversed by addition of a slight excess of calcium or zinc ions. The cleavage specificity of metalloproteinase 2 against the A and B chains of S-carboxymethyl insulin was almost identical to that found previously for metalloproteinase 1.  相似文献

The phenology of oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta (Busck), on apple (Malus spp.) in North Carolina was studied using pheromone traps and egg sampling in abandoned and commercial orchards in 2000 and 2001, with subsequent development of an oviposition degree-day model and management studies in relation to codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.), phenology. Oriental fruit moth eggs were found in greater numbers on leaves early and on fruit later in the growing season, on the top versus the bottom of the leaf surface, and on the calyx area versus the side or stem end of the fruit. A degree-day (DD) model to predict oriental fruit moth oviposition was developed based on temperature accumulations from peak moth trap capture of the first (overwintering) generation, by using 7.2 and 32.2 degrees C as the temperature limits. The model predicted four ovipositing generations of oriental fruit moth with the second beginning 507 DD after peak moth catch. Using predictions of the oriental fruit moth and codling moth degree-day oviposition models, an experiment was conducted to determine the level of second generation oriental fruit moth control with methoxyfenozide applied under different scenarios for first generation codling moth. Methoxyfenozide was equally effective in managing codling moth and oriental fruit moth for all treatment timings.  相似文献

Advanced light manipulation is extremely attractive for applications in organic optoelectronics to enhance light harvesting efficiency. A novel method of fabricating high‐efficiency organic solar cells (OSCs) is proposed using biomimetic moth eye nanostructures in a quasi‐periodic gradient shape active layer and an antireflective coating. A 24.3% increase in photocurrent is realized without sacrificing dark electrical properties, yielding a 22.2% enhancement in power conversion efficiency to a record of 7.86% for OSCs with a poly(3‐hexylthiophene‐2,5‐diyl):indene‐C60 bis‐adduct (P3HT:ICBA) active layer. The experimental and theoretical characterizations verify that the substantial improvement of OSCs is mainly ascribed to the self‐enhanced absorption resulting from the broadband polarization‐insensitive light trapping in biomimetic nanostructured active layer, the reduction in reflectance by the antireflective coating, and surface plasmonic effect excited by corrugated metallic electrode. It is noteworthy that the pathway described here is promising for opening up opportunities to realize high‐performance OSCs towards the future photovoltaic applications.  相似文献

A broadband and ultra-thin absorber in the infrared region is proposed. The structure is composed of three layers, and the most remarkable difference is that two hybrid materials (Sn and InSb) are used in the top layer. The numerical results show that a broadband perfect absorption from 85.2 to 114.3 THz can be achieved for either transverse electric or magnetic polarization waves due to the effect of using hybrid materials. Moreover, the power loss and surface current distribution in the absorber are investigated to explain the physical mechanism of high absorption. The metamaterial absorber is ultra-thin, having total thickness of 0.3 μm, i.e.,λ/10 with respect to the center frequency of the high absorption bands. The proposed hybrid materials which are used in the same layer provides a useful way to realize a broadband perfect absorber in the infrared region and it is important for a variety of applications, such as solar energy harvest, sensors, and integrated photodetectors .  相似文献

This study investigates the optical Bloch oscillations (OBOs) in waveguide arrays that consist of alternative perfect electric conductor (PEC) layers and dielectric layers by performing both numerical simulations and theoretical analyses. In PEC dielectric waveguide arrays (PDWAs), the PEC layers are perforated with square holes to support the surface plasmon-like (SPL) modes. The relative permittivities of the dielectric layers have a constant gradient across the waveguide arrays. The OBOs in the PDWAs arise because of the excitation and coupling of the SPL modes. The ray trajectories that are predicted using Hamiltonian optics are consistent with the simulated results. When the position of incidence is fixed, the period of oscillation varies as the reciprocal of the incident frequency. However, the amplitude of oscillation is almost independent of the frequency. For a fixed incident frequency, the amplitude and period of oscillation increases and decreases, respectively as the position of incidence moves toward the dielectric layers with higher relative permittivities.  相似文献

The cornea is the first optical element in the path of light entering the eye, playing a role in image formation and protection. Corneas of vertebrate simple camera-type eyes possess microprojections on the outer surface in the form of microridges, microvilli, and microplicae. Corneas of invertebrates, which have simple or compound eyes, or both, may be featureless or may possess microprojections in the form of nipples. It was previously unknown whether cephalopods (invertebrates with camera-type eyes like vertebrates) possess corneal microprojections and, if so, of what form. Using scanning electron microscopy, we examined corneas of a range of cephalopods and discovered nipple-like microprojections in all species. In some species, nipples were like those described on arthropod compound eyes, with a regular hexagonal arrangement and sizes ranging from 75 to 103?nm in diameter. In others, nipples were nodule shaped and irregularly distributed. Although terrestrial invertebrate nipples create an antireflective surface that may play a role in camouflage, no such optical function can be assigned to cephalopod nipples due to refractive index similarities of corneas and water. Their function may be to increase surface-area-to-volume ratio of corneal epithelial cells to increase nutrient, gas, and metabolite exchange, and/or stabilize the corneal mucous layer, as proposed for corneal microprojections of vertebrates.  相似文献

The nipple array is a submicrometre-scale structure found on the cuticle surfaces of various invertebrate taxa. Corneal nipples are an antiglare surface in nocturnal insects, but the functional significance of the nipple array has not been experimentally investigated for aquatic organisms. Using nanopillar sheets as a mimetic model of the nipple array, we demonstrated that significantly fewer bubbles adhered to the nanopillar surface versus a flat surface when the sheets were hydrophilic. Many more bubbles adhered to the hydrophobic surface than the hydrophilic surfaces. Bubbles on the body surface may cause buoyancy problems, movement interference and water flow occlusion. Here, bubble repellence is proposed as a function of the hydrophilic nipple array in aquatic invertebrates and its properties are considered based on bubble adhesion energy.  相似文献

The extrafloral nectaries of many plants promote ant defense against insect herbivores. We examined the influence of extrafloral nectaries on the levels of parasitism of a generalist insect herbivore, the gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar L.). Larvae and pupae of the moth were collected from trees with and without extrafloral nectaries growing in the same forests in South Korea and reared to evaluate parasitism. More parasitism occurred on plants with extrafloral nectaries in seven of the nine season-long collections at the six sites and in four out of five collecting periods. Parasitism was higher on the four main genera of plants with extrafloral nectaries than on any of five main genera of plants without extrafloral nectaries. There was no difference in parasitoid richness; nine species occurred in each group, eight of which were the same. There was a positive and almost significant correlation between the abundance of plants with extrafloral nectaries and the parasitism of gypsy moth at the sites. Extrafloral nectaries may reduce herbivory by inducing more parasitism of the insect herbivores that attack plants bearing the glands.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Two odour receptor cells were physiologically identified within male antennal hair sensillae of the gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar L, and the nun moth, L. monacha L. In the gypsy moth, one cell responded to (+)-disparlure, while a neighbouring cell responded to (-)-disparlure. In the nun moth both cells responded to (+)-disparlure. The lack of sensitivity to (-)-disparlure in the nun moth was corroborated by electroantennogram (EAG) recordings, which indicated no affinity to this enantiomer. Single cell responses of male gypsy moth to different concentrations of the synthetic enantiomers of disparlure were then compared to responses elicited by hexane extracts of female glands of both species. The gypsy moth's extracts stimulated almost exclusively the receptor cell specialized for (+)-disparlure, while both cells were simultaneously stimulated by the extracts of the nun moths. From the response characteristic of the cells it is estimated that pheromone production of the nun moth is about 10% (+) and 90% (-)-disparlure, and that of the gypsy moth is almost 100% (+)-disparlure. Stimulation of the antenna of each species by female gland extracts of both species did not indicate the presence of receptors for other hexane elutable pheromone components in either species.  相似文献

An account is given of the ultrastructure and optical properties of the structural colour scales of Papilio karna and P.palinurus. The scales are Urania-type multilayers of 10 lamellae separated by air-spaces. A theoretical model is elaborated to account for the results and it is concluded that colour variation between species is achieved through control of film thickness. It is proposed that the surface structure functions as an anti-reflection coating. A generalised functional basis for the structural difference between Urania-type and Morpho-type scales is suggested.  相似文献

The role of nipple stimulation in the suppression of the estrous cycle during extended lactation was studied in rats subjected to either total, partial, or sham excision of the nipples. Each female cohabited with 4 pups, 4-14 days old, over a period of 70 days postpartum, during which vaginal smears were recorded daily. Initially, regardless of the presence of nipples, all rats exhibited a postpartum diestrus that lasted for 12-20 days. Intact females (bearing 6 pairs of nipples) continued to exhibit successive prolonged diestrous phases over 70 days of lactation. A comparable result was obtained with females bearing only the anterior pair of nipples, which, in a separate experiment, was found to be the most frequently suckled pair. However, females devoid of nipples resumed regular (4-day) estrous cycles between Days 12 and 27 postpartum, in spite of their continuous contact with pups. Thus, when lactation is prolonged beyond the normal time of weaning (Day 21 postpartum), stimulation of the nipples by sucking becomes indispensable for the continued arrest of the estrous cycle. The possible mechanisms underlying this phenomenon are discussed.  相似文献
