Abstract In order to elucidate the mechanism regulating its seasonal life cycle, the photoperiodic response of Achaearanea tepidariorum has been analysed. Nymphal development was faster in long-day and slower in short-day photoperiods. The combined action of low temperature, poor food supply and short daylength induced diapause at an earlier developmental stage than short days alone. Thus, photoperiod is a primary factor inducing nymphal diapause, but the diapausing instar is influenced by both temperature and food supply. Hibernating nymphs became unresponsive to photoperiod in late December. After hibernation, however, sensitivity was restored and the nymphs remained sensitive to photoperiod throughout their life. This spider could also enter an imaginal or reproductive diapause. Photoperiod was again a primary inducing factor and temperature modified the photoperiodic response to some extent. The induction of the reproductive diapause was almost temperature-compensated whereas development was not. So the involvement of a photoperiodic counter system was suggested. Irrespective of whether the nymph had experienced diapause or not, the imaginal diapause was induced in response to a short-day photoperiod after adult moult. Based on these observations, the seasonal life cycle and the adaptive significance of nymphal and imaginal diapause are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Prey capture rate, food consumption, and diet composition of all developmental stages of the funnelweb spider Agelena limbata were estimated in woody and open habitats by a sight-count method. Prey availability was evaluated on the basis of two indices, i.e. the ratios of daily food consumption to dry weight of predator and to daily standard metabolic rate. These indices varied seasonally and between instars in this spider. Comparison of these indices between arthropod predators suggests that A. limbata live under conditions of relatively limited food supply. In the open habitat, the spiders reduced foraging activities to avoid heat stress at midday in summer because the sheet web was exposed to the direct rays of the sun and its temperature exceeded 40°C. The daily food consumption of adult spiders in the open habitat was about half of that in the woody habitat. The lower rate of energy intake of spiders in the open habitat may cause the observed smaller size of adults and lower fecundity. A. limbata captured a great range of prey comprising ten orders of arthropods and ate chemically defended insects, e.g. stink bugs, lady beetles, and ants which were rejected by many spiders. This generalistic foraging may be associated with limited and heterogeneous food supply in this spider.  相似文献

The physiology and fine structure of the vibration receptor of the spider (Achaearanea tepidariorum) was studied throughout the process of molting. The physiological studies showed that there is no dramatic change in the receptor's vibration sensitivity as the time of ecdysis approaches. Only a gradual loss of sensitivity can be detected on a statistical basis using large numbers of spiders. The fine structural studies suggest that the connection between the sensory neurone and the receptor within the old cuticle remains intact up to the time that the cuticle is shed.  相似文献

Glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) is an enzyme that catalyzes the decarboxylation of glutamate to γ‐aminobutyric acid (GABA) and CO2. It has been discovered that the GAD has a restricted tissue distribution and it is highly expressed in the cytoplasm of GABAergic neurons in the CNS where GABA is used as a neurotransmitter. We have examined the microstructure of ganglionic neurons and nerves arising from the CNS and describe here the immunocytochemical localization of GAD isoforms to reveal the ecophysiological significance of GABA for the web‐building spider's behavior. In the CNS of the cobweb spider, Achaearanea tepidariorum, immunocytochemical localization of GAD isoforms can be detected in the neurons and neuropiles of the optic lobes. In addition, GAD‐like immunoreactive cell bodies are observed at the intrinsic cell bodies near the central body and the symmetric cell clusters of the protocerebrum. However, the fibrous masses within the protocerebral ganglion are not labeled at all. Based on its interconnection with other regions of the CNS, our findings suggest that the central body in the web‐building spider may act as an association center as well as a visual center.  相似文献

The microstructural organization of the silk‐spinning apparatus of the comb‐footed spider, Achaearanea tepidariorum, was observed by using a field emission scanning electron microscope. The silk glands of the spider were classified into six groups: ampullate, tubuliform, flagelliform, aggregate, aciniform and pyriform glands. Among these, three types of silk glands, the ampullate, pyriform and aciniform glands, occur only in female spiders. One (adult) or two (subadult) pairs of major ampullate glands send secretory ductules to the anterior spinnerets, and another pair of minor ampullate glands supply the median spinnerets. Three pairs of tubuliform glands in female spiders send secretory ductules to the median (one pair) and posterior (two pairs) spinnerets. Furthermore, one pair of flagelliform glands and two pairs of aggregate glands together supply the posterior spinnerets, and form a characteristic spinning structure known as a “triad” spigot. In male spiders, this combined apparatus of the flagelliform and the aggregate spigots for capture thread production is not apparent, instead only a non‐functional remnant of this triad spigot is present. In addition, the aciniform glands send ductules to the median (two pairs) and the posterior spinnerets (12–16 pairs), and the pyriform glands feed silk into the anterior spinnerets (90–100 pairs in females and 45–50 pairs in males).  相似文献

Oviposition behavior of Zatypota albicoxa (Walker) is described. This wasp parasitizes the house spider Achaearanea tepidariorum (Koch), which weaves irregular, three-dimensional webs. Based on field observations, two modes of oviposition behavior were recognized. In one, the wasp hung on the web, pulling the thread with its fore leg, until the spider lifted it up (ambush-style). In the other mode, the wasp climbed the web (climbing-style). Under laboratory conditions in an aquarium, the wasp hung on the web in mid height of the gumfoot thread as in the former style, then flew toward unaware spider and paralyzed it. After paralyzing, the wasp usually rubbed the spider's abdomen with its ovipositor and tip of metasoma repeatedly at short intervals for several minutes. In all cases they adopted the same posture in which they grasped the spider abdomen with fore and mid legs during oviposition. As female wasps emerged from larger hosts and male wasps emerged from smaller ones, the ovipositing wasp apparently assesses the size of the spider and chooses whether to lay a fertilized or an unfertilized egg. In addition, it was confirmed that Z. albicoxa expelled the eggs not from the tip of the ovipositor but from the tip of its abdomen, as in other species of the Polysphincta group (e.g. Hymenoepimecis argyraphaga , Reclinervellus tuberculatus and Schizopyga circulator ).  相似文献

The cobweb spider Parasteatoda tepidariorum (C. L. Koch, 1841; syn.: Achaearanea tepidariorum) has become an important study organism in developmental biology and evolution as well as in genetics. Besides Cupiennius salei, it has become a chelicerate model organism for evo-devo studies in recent years. However, a staging system taking into account the entire development, and detailed enough to apply to modern studies, is still required. Here we describe the embryonic development of P. tepidariorum and provide a staging system which allows easy recognition of the distinct stages using simple laboratory tools. Differences between P. tepidariorum and other chelicerates, primarily C. salei, are discussed. Furthermore, cocoon production and the first postembryonic moulting procedure are described. Schematic drawings of all stages are provided to ease stage recognition.  相似文献

A study observing the foraging behaviours and prey discrimination of a common demersal stingray, the bluespotted maskray Dasyatis kuhlii was performed under controlled laboratory conditions. A selection of prey species and masses were offered at depths of 10 and 50 mm in sand. Foraging efficiency and prey selection at both burial depths were compared. Dasyatis kuhlii selected the ghost shrimps, Trypaea australiensis and T. australiensis >2·5 g, range ± 0·2 g though foraging errors represented by prey being excavated and not consumed suggested a limited discriminatory ability at the point of detection. Burial depth did not influence prey species, mass selection or discriminatory ability.  相似文献

Gastric evacuation experiments, performed with groups of Atlantic mackerel Scomber scombrus and three different prey species: sprat Sprattus sprattus , sandeel Ammodytes marinus and krill Meganectyphanes norwegicus , revealed a strong temperature effect on gastric evacuation ( Q 10=4.l) and a curvilinear evacuation with a shape intermediate between the square root and the exponential model. From the experiments with krill, where no internal tagging was possible, the medians and upper quartiles of the stomach content distributions were analysed instead of individual data. From these experiments the evacuation rate of krill was 60% higher than that of sandeel. An additional simulation study confirmed that the use of medians results in more accurate estimates of the evacuation rates when compared to the arithmetic means.  相似文献

An organism's morphology is driven by selection on function while being constrained by phylogenetic and developmental factors as well as functional trade‐offs. If selection on function is strong and solutions limited, then convergence is expected. In this paper we quantify head shape in a group of ecologically diverse snakes (homalopsid snakes) differing in habitat use and diet using three‐dimensional geometric morphometric approaches. Using data on head shape we explore whether snakes eating different prey show different morphologies. Moreover, we test whether head shape is constrained by other factors such as habitat use, burrow use, or activity pattern. Our results demonstrate similar head shapes in species consuming similar prey. Snakes that capture elusive prey under water differ from those that capture and swallow prey like frogs or crustaceans. Moreover, habitat use, the use of burrows, and activity pattern also significantly impact head shape in this group of snakes. However, this signal appears to be partly confounded by the diet signal. For axes discriminating specifically between habitat use groups or animals that use burrows vs. those that do not shapes were in accordance with our predictions. Our results suggests an adaptive signal in the evolution of head shape in homalopsid snakes with diet, habitat use and the use of burrows all influencing the evolution of head shape in the group.  相似文献

Both laboratory experiments and field observations were usedto examine the prey-attraction hypothesis for the function ofthe silk decoration on the orb web of Octonoba sybotides. Thereflectance spectrum of the decorative silk showed that thedecorations reflect relatively more ultraviolet (UV) light.Choice experiments were conducted using Drosophila melanogaster,a common prey species of the spider, to determine whether webswith silk decoration attract more flies than undecorated webs. The choice experiment showed that webs with silk decorationattract more flies in light that includes UV rays. However, flies choose their flight direction randomly in light withoutUV rays. This suggests that the silk decoration might attract preyinsects that tend to fly toward UV-reflecting objects. Fieldobservations comparing the prey capture rate between webs withand without a silk decoration showed that more prey are caughtin decorated webs. In this study, no difference between thetwo forms of silk decoration, linear and spiral, was detectedeither in prey attraction in the choice experiment or in theprey capture rate in the field observations.  相似文献

1. We examined the response of a predatory benthic fish, the longnose dace ( Rhinichthys cataractae ), to patchiness in the distribution of benthic macroinvertebrates on cobbles at three hierarchical spatial scales during summer and autumn 1996, and spring 1997 in a southern Appalachian stream. 2. At the primary scale (four to five individual cobbles separated by <1 m), the intensity of foraging was not correlated with the biomass of benthic macroinvertebrates/cobble, regardless of season. 3. At the secondary scale (i.e. foraging patches <5 m in diameter) we found that benthic macroinvertebrates were patchily distributed in summer, but not in autumn or spring. Concomitantly, in summer, longnose dace foraged on cobbles with a significantly higher biomass of benthic macronvertebrates than nearby, randomly selected cobbles with similar physical conditions (i.e. longnose dace tended to avoid low-prey foraging patches). In contrast, when benthic macroinvertebrates were distributed homogeneously (spring and autumn), dace did not select patches with a significantly higher biomass of benthic macroinvertebrates than that available on randomly selected cobbles. 4. At the tertiary scale (i.e. stream reaches 11–19 m long), the biomass of benthic macroinvertebrates (per cobble per reach) was patchily distributed (i.e. differed significantly among reaches) in all seasons. Among reaches with physical characteristics preferred by longnose dace, (i.e. erosional reaches dominated by cobble/boulder substratum and high current velocity), we detected a significant, positive correlation between the biomass of benthic macroinvertebrates/cobble and longnose dace density in all seasons. 5. Our results demonstrated that both spatial and temporal patchiness in resource availability influenced significantly the use of both foraging patches and stream reaches by longnose dace.  相似文献

An optimal foraging model was used to predict prey selection based on both energy maximization and number maximization strategies. The influence of chemical cues and relative abundance on rainbow trout diet selection was examined under laboratory conditions.
In most fish, diet composition was strongly influenced by chemical cues. No fish followed an energy maximization strategy, and selection of prey based on taste persisted despite large caloric penalties associated with these choices. In the absence of chemical cues, diet composition was based on relative abundance of prey (a number maximization strategy). Within the feasible constraints of the optimal foraging model lie a large number of possible diet combinations which would provide sufficient energy for growth and reproduction. This provides a wide scope for feeding flexibility. Response to prey chemical cues may be the basis for observations of individual diet variability in trout.  相似文献

Cyrtarachne is an orb-weaving spider of the sub-family Cyrtarachninae (Araneidae), which includes the triangle-web-building Pasilobus and the bolas spiders. We found that web and thread characteristics of Cyrtarachne differed greatly from those of typical orb-webs. Web diameter, sticky spiral spacing, breaking strength and stickiness of thread, thread diameter and droplet diameter were significantly different from those of other members of Araneidae. It is especially worth noting that the diameter was approximately four times, and the breaking strength seven to ten times larger in Cyrtarachne viscid threads than in those of other araneids. Kinetic energy-absorbing ability of Cyrtarachne threads was much greater than in that of other species, and close to the amount of kinetic energy generated by flying moths. Viscid material of threads was peculiar because its adhesiveness decreased to zero in a few hours. Moreover, SEM photos revealed them to be covered with thin scales of material, while threads of other araneids were smooth. These two facts suggest that the viscid material of Cyrtarachne threads may be different from those of other orb-weavers. As web-building, hunting behaviour and prey composition of different species of Cyrtarachninae arc quite similar to each other, we hypothesize that these extraordinary web and thread characteristics of Cyrtarachne are shared by the other members of this sub-family. Because these characteristics differ in many ways from those of typical araneid orb-webs, there appears to have been a great leap in evolution between Cyrtarachne and the other Araneidae.  相似文献

Prey selection behaviour of three-spined sticklebacks, Gasterosteus aculeatus L., was studied in two experiments. Where possible, the experimental apparatus satisfied the assumptions of the simplest optimal diet model (the basic prey model); prey were presented sequentially, the fish could not search for and handle prey at the same time, and net energy gain, handling time and encounter rate were fixed. Experiment 1 presented fish with a range of Asellus sizes so that pursuit ( p ) and handling ( h ) time could be related to prey size. Published energy values of Asellus together with pursuit and handling times were used to calculate E /( p+h ) for Asellus measuring 3,4,5,6,7 and 9 mm. Pursuit times did not differ with prey size but handling times did. E /( p+h ) was very variable particularly at the larger prey sizes. Experiment 2 presented fish with two sequences of prey differing in the encounter rate with the most profitable prey sizes. Fish did not select the diet predicted by the basic prey model tending to always ignore the largest prey even when net energy gain would have been maximized by including them in the diet. Further analysis showed that the probability of a prey size being taken was a function of prey size, fish stomach fullness and encounter rate. It is concluded that the basic prey model is too simple to capture the behaviour of the fish. One of its main faults is that the changing state of the fish through the feeding bout is ignored.  相似文献

The predatory behaviour of Stethoruspunctillum larvae was studied on the two-spottedspider mite (Tetranychus urticae), in order toassess how it responded to temperatures and relativehumidities typical of glasshouse conditions on fouredible crop plant species. Locomotory activity(distance covered, time spent walking, walking speed, angular velocity, and turning rate) was recorded at20, 25 and 30 °C and relativehumidity levels of 33%, 65% and 90% RH on tomato, pepper, aubergine and cucumber and analysed usingvideo/computer techniques. The results show thatactivity of S. punctillum significantly increased athigher temperatures. Host plant species also stronglyinfluenced the performance of the predator, which wasmost active on pepper and tomato and least active onaubergine. Relative humidity had no significantinfluence.  相似文献
