Behavior toward two mirrors in the field was observed in the Arashiyama West troop ofMacaca fuscata. Counts of visits to the mirrors, plus scan and focal animal sampling were used. Some animals were marked with fluorescent paint to test informally for self-recognition. A relatively high mean frequency of visits to the reflecting side of both mirrors by all age classes, ranks, and sexes was recorded. There was no age difference in frequency of mirror visits per sample but adults spent more time per visit than subadults who in turn spent more time than juveniles. There was no indication of self-recognition by paint-marked animals. Mirrors appeared to be used to monitor the reflected scene and to look at the self-image. Social behavior in the mirror zone that was not directed toward the mirror was common to all age classes. Species-typical behavior directed toward the mirror was seen in younger animals but very seldom in adults. No threat displays by any animal were observed. We suggest that for adults the mirror image was not seen simply as another monkey.  相似文献

A mirror system is active both when an animal executes a class of actions (self-actions) and when it sees another execute an action of that class. Much attention has been given to the possible roles of mirror systems in responding to the actions of others but there has been little attention paid to their role in self-actions. In the companion article (Bonaiuto et al. Biol Cybern 96:9–38, 2007) we presented MNS2, an extension of the Mirror Neuron System model of the monkey mirror system trained to recognize the external appearance of its own actions as a basis for recognizing the actions of other animals when they perform similar actions. Here we further extend the study of the mirror system by introducing the novel hypotheses that a mirror system may additionally help in monitoring the success of a self-action and may also be activated by recognition of one’s own apparent actions as well as efference copy from one’s intended actions. The framework for this computational demonstration is a model of action sequencing, called augmented competitive queuing, in which action choice is based on the desirability of executable actions. We show how this “what did I just do?” function of mirror neurons can contribute to the learning of both executability and desirability which in certain cases supports rapid reorganization of motor programs in the face of disruptions.  相似文献

Attack coalitions, whereby two or more individuals attack another animal simultaneously, were studied in 53 sexually mature female baboons from one small and two large troops at Mikumi National Park, Tanzania. For 14 months, three observers recorded coalition behavior throughout the day, using focal group sampling on a behavior-dependent basis. Coalition rates were considerably greater in the two large troops than in the small troop, and primarily involved natal females rather than males. Coalition frequencies corresponded closely to measures of reproductive synchrony, both within and between troops. Involvement in attack coalition behavior depended on the reproductive states and ranks of both attackers and recipients. The first few females to give birth in the cohort received particularly high amounts of coalition aggression just before and immediately after giving birth. Receipt of attack coalitions was significantly associated with an increased number of cycles to conception and longer interbirth intervals, as well spontaneous abortion, premature birth, and prolonged gestation. A parallel study on survivorship patterns of immature baboons at Mikumi provided evidence for ultimate cause of the observed coalition patterns. These combined results suggest that attack coalition behavior is a form of reproductive competition whereby females attempt to suppress the reproduction of others at predictably competitive times and thereby reduce the competition their own infants face from the time they are weaned.  相似文献

Alliance formations in a troop of free-ranging Japanese macaques, which had been provisioned 16 months before the present study was begun, were observed at the feeding ground for about 300 hr from April 1973 to March 1974. The patterns of alliance formations and their roles were described. The leader male had a quite unique role in his alliance formations; he allied much frequently with the aggressees and attacked the aggressors. Besides, the leader male allied more frequently with babies, yearlings, 2-year-old animals, and adult females, while he frequently attacked the 3- and 4-year-old animals and adult males. The animals who belonged to the same matrilineal group always allied with one another. Except the leader male, the troop members rather preferred to ally, except in those cases where the former diads involved their matrilineal group members, with the first aggressors. Networks of such alliance formations in relation with the social organization of Japanese macaques are discussed.  相似文献

Recently captured moustached tamarins (Saguinus mystax) were briefly separated from other members of their troop. Most separated animals emitted long calls that were, in general, similar in acoustic structure to those of sympatric tamarin species while retaining species distinctiveness. Individual differences also appeared in call structure. The long calls of a separated animal were responded to almost entirely by members of the animal's own troop rather than by other troops, and reciprocal calling occurred among troop members significantly more often than expected by chance. Although there was no evidence of troop-specific call structure or dialect, there were troop-specific responses to the calls of separated tamarins. This response implies the existence of a stable and integrated troop structure that allows troop members to learn and to respond to the individual specific features of each troop member's calls.  相似文献

Pavlov's discovery of experiment neurosis was serendipitous, yet it was made under the influence of Breuer and Freud's case of Anna O. In 1914, Pavlov's disciple N. R. Shenger-Krestovnikova, exploring the limits of visual discrimination in dogs, noticed that when the discrimination was difficult, the dogs' behavior became disorganized. Pavlov drew an analogy between the condition of Shenger-Krestovnikova's dogs and their disorganized behavior with Anna O.'s situation and her neurotic reaction. Pavlov concluded that he had demonstrated in the laboratory the elements of neurosis in animals and human alike. Schilder's criticism of his position, his later study of human neuroses in clinical settings, and the views of Janet may have induced Pavlov to differentiate between animal and human neuroses.

A detailed fission process in a wild ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta) troop was observed at Berenty Reserve, Madagascar. The troop fission occurred as follows: 1) During the birth season in 2000, two adult females (mother and daughter) were evicted as a result of "targeted aggression" (i.e., intense and persistent aggressive behavior toward particular individuals). 2) Two adult and three immature females in the same kin group as the evicted females spontaneously immigrated into the new group. 3) A male immigrated into the new group 1.5 months later. 4) The new troop successfully established its own home range. This report exemplifies three characteristics of troop fission in ring-tailed lemurs. First, targeted aggression initiated the fission process. Second, the troop females divided along matrilineal lines. Finally, no male played a specific role in the fission process.  相似文献

On 11 July 1997, the mating behavior of wild manta rays,Manta birostris, was observed while skin diving off Chichijima. Ogasawara Islands, Japan, and recorded with 49 underwater photographs and about 20 minutes of video tape. The female manta ray involved was estimated as being approximately 5 m in dise width (DW) and the two males involved, approximately 4 m DW. Copulatory behavior of the two males appeared to be almost the same, copulation itself being of the abdomen-to-abdomen type. Initially, the males chased the female for 20–30 minutes, all animals swimming at approximately 10 km/h. Each copulation event occurred within one meter of the surface, during which time the participating male grasped the tip of the female's left pectoral fin with his mouth. The clasper was inserted for 90 seconds (Male No. 1) and 60 seconds (Male No. 2), respectively. The mating behavior sequence of the manta rays involved following five steps. 1.: Male chases behind the tail of the female, attempting (several times) to grasp the latter's pectoral fin (chasing behavior). 2.: Male bites the tip of the female's pectoral fin, before positioning itself against the latter's underside (biting behavior). 3.: Male inserts a clasper into the cloaca of the female (copulating behavior). 4.: Male removes the clasper from the cloaca of the female, but continues biting the latter's pectoral fin (post-copulating behavior). 5.: Male releases the pectoral fin of the female, setting her free (separating behavior).  相似文献

An ingrained technique in primatological analysis is to rank individual animals in a hierarchical system that is usually but not always based on the outcome of agonistic encounters. An explication of group structre and function is then sought by correlation these rankings with aspects of behavior. When the behavior of the adult males in a free-ranging troop of olive baboons is examined, ranking is found to be inadequate to represent the behavioral variability existing between individuals. The relationships maintained by these animals is analyzed, emphasizing amounts of time devoted to specific activities, and it is recommended that affiliative rather than agonistic behavior be stressed in future studies.  相似文献

Observations of reproductive behavior in free-ranging Lemur catta were carried out during one annual cycle. Variability in the behavior of female ringtailed lemurs during parturition appears to be mainly a function of the female's parity and thus her experience. Females within a troop show estrous asynchrony and characteristically mate with more than one male. Females also exhibit proceptive behavior toward and mate with some males from other troops and with transferring males. The potential for a male to monopolize mating opportunities during a female's short estrous period is therefore limited. Male mating strategies in ringtailed lemurs can be seen as adaptations to female mate choice during a highly restricted breeding season. In this species the dominance hierarchy does not break down with regard to the order of mating. The highest ranking male (central male) mates first and shows precopulatory guarding and longer postejaculatory guarding, which may increase his chances of siring the offspring. Subsequent mating partners have developed various counterstrategies to mitigate mating order effects.  相似文献

The social organization of a group of wolves in a large outdoorenclosure was followed through several breeding seasons. Duringthe breeding season conflicts become more frequent and the socialhierarchy obvious. The more dominant animals restrict courtshipactivities by inferior wolves of their own sex. However, apparentlyas a correlate of their position, two alpha males have shownless mating activity than other males. Mate preferences exhibitedby animals of both sexes also limit the number of matings. Thepreferences appear related to the social hierarchy existingwhen an animal matures. Cultural transmission of social statusis suggested by some changes in ranking of wolves raised inthe woods at Brookfield. Temporary removal of the original alphamale and death of the original alpha female appear to have promotedchanges in social order and an increase in actual mating combinations. The probable consanguineous nature of wolf groups and facetsof the social behavior suggest that some form of group selectioncould be operative in the wild.  相似文献

We compared patterns of vigilance behavior in a male- and a female-dominant species—white-faced capuchins and ring-tailed lemurs—and used the results to test four hypotheses to explain vigilance behavior in primates. Adult male white-faced capuchins spent significantly more time vigilant than females did, and much male vigilance appeared to be directed toward males from other social groups. This finding supports the protection of paternity hypothesis. No sex difference existed in vigilance behavior among the ring-tailed lemurs, and subjects of both sexes exhibited more vigilance toward predators/potential predators than toward extragroup conspecifics, which supports the predator detection hypothesis. A trade-off argument, suggesting that females tolerate males in a group in return for greater male vigilance, does not apply to ring-tailed lemurs in our study. In both the male-dominant capuchins and the female-dominant ring-tailed lemurs, the alpha subject in the majority of the study groups was significantly more vigilant than other group members were. In white-faced capuchins, the alpha male mates more often than subordinate males do; therefore, the greater degree of vigilance exhibited by the alpha male may correspond to the protection of his reproductive investment. In ring-tailed lemurs, there can be more than one matriline in a group. Thus, the greater amount of vigilance behavior exhibited by the alpha female may be related to protection of her matriline, which could ultimately lead to greater inclusive fitness. Alpha subjects in our study groups exhibited certain behaviors more frequently or exclusively. Accordingly, there may be a constellation of behaviors characteristic of alpha animals.  相似文献

Observations of play behavior were made on a troop of Japanese monkeys for five months. The troop consisted of 125 animals during the study period. Only 104 animals were observed playing with the troop members while the other 21 animals were never observed playing with other individuals. Two-member play was the most frequent. On the average, a monkey played with 20.7 individuals. A total of 6,068 play bouts were observed. The frequency of play appeared to be affected by age, sex, and degree of relatedness. One-year-old infant males played most with other members and the frequency of play decreased with age. Between monkeys whose disparity of age was less than two years, 5,763 bouts (95.0% of the total) were observed. Moreover, among sameaged monkeys who comprised 10.6% of the possible pair combinations, 2,739 play bouts (45.1%) were observed. Juvenile males played with same-sexed peers more than with opposite-sexed peers, whereas older juvenile females appeared to play with infants of both sexes. Individuals who were related and similarly-ranked tended to play together. There was no apparent preference for animals to play with the offspring of the highest-ranking female. Dominance rank of infnats and juveniles was primarily affected by rank of their mothers and to a lesser extent by play partners. Dominance rank of older juvenile males is more likely to be affected by play partners than females. It may be a critical time for males when they leave their natal troop and join a new troop. The timing of troop shifting by males seemed to be affected by the presence or absence of play-mates. For male Japanese monkeys, play is very important in developing social bonds. Play may act to perpetuate social bonds, enhance the chance of survival, and may contribute to their future reproductive success.  相似文献

Streptozotocin (70 mg/kg) was administered intravenously to female Syrian hamsters. The hamsters received insulin (5U/animal/day). Insulin treatment was withdrawn 3 days before sacrifice in one group, while another group was maintained on insulin until sacrifice. Ten to 14 days following streptozotocin administration the animals were killed, and the pancreatic islets isolated and subsequently dispersed. Islet DNA content was decreased while the glucagon content was elevated by streptozotocin treatment. The glucagon secretory responsiveness of the dispersed alpha cells of control animals was stimulated by glucopenia and decreased by glucose. Alpha cells of streptozotocin hamsters were not only suppressed but were actually stimulated by high glucose concentrations. Treatment with insulin in vivo but not in vitro, resulted in a restoration of the alpha cells responsiveness to glucose suppression. Dispersed alpha cells from control and streptozotocin treated animals were stimulated by arginine. Basal and total glucagon secretion was greatest in dispersed alpha cells from streptozotocin treated animals. We concluded: that the paradoxical response of alpha cells to glucose noted in diabetes is not due to short term insulin deprivation or the lack of morphologic contact with beta cells; that the alpha cells require and insulin stimulated islet metabolite and extra islet materials to respond appropriately to glucose; and that the alpha cells response to arginine is mediated independently of glucose regulation.  相似文献

To analyze the socioecological factors of habitual fission-fusion of troop members, which is an underreported phenomenon in Japanese macaques, the seasonal pattern of fission-fusion within the Hakone troop T in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, was examined. Although almost all the study troop members were included in a large-sized group in winter, a portion of its members of ten formed small subgroups from spring to autumn. The frequencies and age-sex composition of these subgroups changed seasonally. All troop members participated, more or less, in subgroup formation. Subgroups tended to be composed of animals of the same age-sex class. Troop members did not fission along matrilineal lines. Although the study troop members repeatedly joined with and parted from subgroups, the characteristic social structure of Japanese macaque troops was maintained. Habitual fission-fusion among troop members may be one of a number of foraging strategies that facilitate efficient food gathering when the population density exceeds and /or reaches the carrying capacity of the area. The seasonal variation of pattern and composition type of each subgroup could be attributed to alternation of attractive food plant species, as well as age, rank, and sexual activity of both sexes.  相似文献

Two groups of captive macaques (M. fascicularis) were studied at Kassel University, Germany. One included animals whose mothers were high-ranking, another, those whose mothers were low-ranking. The first group was a despotic community in which conflicts were severe and occurred mainly between single individuals; the reconciliation tendency was weak, the male leader was the controlling animal, and the affiliative preferences were marked. The second group was an egalitarian community split into two mutually hostile conalitions; the conflicts were less severe, the tendency for reconciliation was strong, the male leader could control only his own bloc and had no strong affiliative ties with other group members.  相似文献
