Epiphytic diatom communities on macroalgae from Iceland coastal waters were investigated during July 2005. Ten species of seaweeds have been collected belonging to brown, red and green algae. The analysis of epiphytic diatom community was carried out under scanning electron microscopy. The epiphytic diatom abundances varied from 7 ± 5 to 7524 ± 3491 cells mm−2. Erect growth forms were the most abundant, representing on average 50% of the total diatoms (Achnanthes cf. brevipes var. parvula, Tabularia investiens, T. fasciculata, Hyalosira cf. delicatula, Gomphoseptatum aestuarii, Pseudogomphonema plinskii), followed by adnate (29%) (Cocconeis stauroneiformis, C. scutellum) and motile forms (21%) (Nitzschia cf. amphibia and Navicula perminuta). Highly branched seaweeds with articulated thallus surface, offering a number of microenvironments to be occupied by the epiphytes, showed a high level of colonization, mainly due to erect and motile diatoms. Flat thalli with smooth surface allowed for the growth of mainly erect diatoms.  相似文献

The development and mature morphology of the gametophytes from both sexual and apogamous populations of the fern Pellaea andromedaefolia were investigated. While most sexual examples were indistinguishable, some differences were noted. An insular collection was distinctive in its variability and irregularity of form. Although the latter was a representative of var. pubescens, other collections of the variety could not be distinguished from var. andromedaefolia on the basis of gametophytic characteristics. The apogamous gametophytes were decidedly more variable in development and often very different from sexual thalli. The mature asexual thalli tended to be more irregular in form and usually sharply divergent from the typical cordate type characteristic of the sexual populations. Each of the five apogamous samples was unique with respect to gametophyte development. The differences among the gametophytes of the various populations do not correlate with the sporophytic characteristics which differentiate the two varieties of the species.  相似文献

The density (fresh weight/volume) of the detached thalli of four sargassacean species (Myagropsis myagroides, Sargassum horneri, S. patens, S. siliquastrum) was measured weekly to determine their floating period. Thalli of the four species were collected with respect to the difference in their reproductive stage, and their floating abilities at different stages were determined. Floating thallus was ballasted with pre-weighed leads until the final addition of a weight caused sinking. The density and floating period of sargassacean thalli were dependent on the species and the specimens’ reproductive stage. The floating period of thalli detached before maturation was estimated to be between 4 and 14 weeks. However, thalli detached during maturation had a floating period of between 1 and 8 weeks, and those detached after maturation sank within 2 weeks. Sargassum horneri had the lowest density and the longest floating period among the four species investigated and this may explain the high abundance of S. horneri in floating seaweeds observed in the Sea of Japan.  相似文献

Recent phylogenetic studies of the diatoms indicate that members of the order Thalassiosirales occupy an interesting position in the diatom evolutionary tree. Despite their radial morphology and scaly auxospores, they are consistently recovered in molecular analyses as a member of subdivision Bacillariophytina and a sister clade to non‐fultoportulate and non‐radial lithodesmioids. This study included 46 species from nine traditionally accepted extant genera, and analyzed 43 nuclear small subunit (SSU) rRNA sequences in parallel with a survey of the variation in fultoportula structure. Three possible scenarios leading to the evolution of the fultoportula are discussed in the context of molecular and morphological similarities between the examined Thalassiosirales and their SSU rRNA sister clade Lithodesmiales. We speculate that the fultoportula might be derived by a modification of either a cribrum in an areola (fultoportula within an areola), or structures similar to marginal ridges now seen in lithodesmioids around a cluster of poroids (fultoportula in a tube), or finally, that the central fultoportula may have an origin different from the marginal fultoportulae. Our data confirm that fultoportula‐bearing diatoms constitute a natural phylogenetic group. The families Thalassiosiraceae, Skeletonemaceae, and Stephanodiscaceae and the genus Thalassiosira Cleve were unexpectedly found to be paraphyletic. Further, Cyclotella Kutz. and Stephanodiscus Ehr. may not be closely related and some species of these genera are more closely allied to other species of Thalassiosira. The generitype, T. nordenskioeldii, is embedded within a large poorly structured cluster of species that includes several members of Thalassiosira, Planktoniella sol, Minidiscus trioculatus, and two members of Stephanodiscus. An emendment of the order Lithodesmiales and the family Lauderiaceae are proposed.  相似文献

The infection cycle of five Cephaleuros species – C. aucubae, C. biolophus, C. japonicus, C. microcellularis, and C. virescens – was clarified by investigating seasonal development and gamete and zoospore behavior at study sites in Matsue, Shimane Prefecture, Japan. Fresh thalli or lesions appeared on the leaves of various woody plants from August and continued to develop in general from April to September in the following year. Gametangia and zoosporangia matured on 2‐ and 3‐year‐old leaves. Gametes were released in C. microcellularis samples collected from late March to late May and in samples of the other four species collected from late April to late July. Zoospores were released in C. biolophus, C. japonicus, and C. virescens samples collected from mid‐May to early August. In the present study, gametes did not conjugate but germinated like zoospores to produce new plants. After inoculation with zoospores and gametes that behave as asexual spores, fresh thalli or lesions became evident in 2–5 months following inoculation and gametes and zoospores were produced on the developed thalli or lesions the following year; one cycle of the infection was completed per year in the study area.  相似文献

Members of the diatom family Rhopalodiaceae possess cyanobacteria-derived intracellular structures called spheroid bodies (SBs) that very likely carry out nitrogen fixation. Due to the shortage of molecular data from SBs and rhopalodiacean diatoms, it remains unclear how SBs were established and spread in rhopalodiacean diatoms. We here amplified the small subunit ribosomal DNA sequences from both host and SB in three rhopalodiacean diatom species, Epithemia turgida, E. sorex, and Rhopalodia gibba. Phylogenetic analyses considering these new sequences clearly indicate that the SBs were acquired by a common ancestor of rhopalodiacean diatoms and have been retained during host speciation.  相似文献

The leafy thalli of species of the marine red algal genus Porphyra grow rapidly but persist for a relatively short time on rocky intertidal or subtidal substrata or as epiphytes on other marine plants. In most species, the large, short-lived leafy thalli alternate with small, presumably perennial, filamentous conchocelis plants. Depending on the species of northeastern Pacific Porphyra, photoperiod and temperature are important regulators of conchospore formation and release. Data from laboratory studies of conchospore formation and release in five Washington species of Porphyra (P. abottae, P. nereocystis, P. perforata, P. pseudolanceolata and P. torta) indicate that conchospores are most likely to be released at a time that precedes the appearance of the leafy thalli in the field.  相似文献

This paper describes the reproduction and life history of an intertidal species, Porphyra endiviifolium, from Antarctica. Field specimens were examined microscopically, prepared for electron microscopy and used to establish cultures. Wild populations comprised two kinds of leafy thalli, morphologically similar but distinguished by their mode of reproduction, either sexual or asexual. Carpospores from monoecious leafy gametophytes developed into conchocelis filaments in culture, and under “winter-spring” conditions these formed conchospores that germinated to produce leafy thalli. Monospores from asexual leafy thalli developed directly into two different forms of leafy thalli. Only one of the cultured morphotypes became fertile, reproducing asexually by monospores. We conclude that the phases of the life history of P. endiviifolium show different ecological strategies, the conchocelis phase reproducing in response to short days unlike the leafy thalli in which growth and reproduction respond primarily to irradiance. Phenology, morphology, life history and responses to different temperature and photoperiod conditions were studied in Japanese Stypocaulon durum (Ruprecht) Okamura. Erect thalli of the species were collected year-round, but the mature thalli forming either uniloc-ular sporangia or two different types of plurilocular structures (evidently gametangia) on separate thalli were found only in winter. ln culture, an isomorphic life history is suggested for the species, alternating between a sporophyte forming unilocular sporangia and gam-etophytes forming plurilocular macro- (female) and micro- (male) gametangia. Contents of unilocular sporangia were not released, but germinated in situ, developing into erect thalli forming plurilocular gametangia. Macrogametangia released aplanogametes (oospores), but male gametangia appeared to be non-functional, although flagellated cells were once formed in the loc-uli. This is the first report of plurilocular gametangia in the species. Although the species grew well and matured under considerably lower temperature conditions than European Stypocaulon scoparium (L.) Sauvageau, its temperature requirements showed similarity to northwestern Atlantic Stypocaulon species. This supports the notion that northwestern Atlantic Stypocaulon is conspecific with S. durum.  相似文献

Eutrophication of shallow coastal waters often leads to blooms of macroalgae. Grazing by crustaceans, such as amphipods and isopods, can reduce macroalgal biomass accumulation. At the same time, growth of the macroalgae can be stimulated by epiphyte removal. The role of grazing by isopods and amphipods on Ulva spp. biomass development was investigated in the Veerse Meer, a brackish lagoon situated in the southwest Netherlands. Exclusion of grazing in the field did not stimulate Ulva spp. growth. In fact, growth rates were higher in exclosures that allowed grazers to enter. Edibility tests identified the amphipod Gammarus locusta, and the isopods Idotea chelipes and Sphaeroma hookeri as potential grazers on Ulva spp. However, when epiphytic diatoms were present on the Ulva spp. thalli, Gammarus and Sphaeroma grazed on ephiphytes and not on Ulva tissue. Only Idotea continued to graze on Ulva spp. A laboratory growth experiment revealed a positive effect of Gammarus presence on Ulva spp. growth, probably caused by preferential removal of epiphytic diatoms from the Ulva spp. thalli. The growth stimulation by epiphyte removing grazers such as Gammarus may explain the higher growth rates in the presence of grazers observed in the field. When determining the potential role of invertebrate grazers in controlling macroalgal biomass accumulation, it is important to include an assessment of the epiphyte abundance on the macroalgae, as preferential removal of epiphytes may stimulate growth and thus have the opposite effect.  相似文献

A revision of the monoraphid pennate diatom genus Campyloneis Grunow was carried out based on LM and EM observations. The material examined originated from various herbarium collections and from extant epiphytic diatom communities on leaves of Posidonia spp. We also examined the generitype C. grevillei (Smith) Grunow and the fossil material of C. gheyselinchi Reinhold from which the author extracted the type. Our results clarified the fine structure of C. grevillei and C. gheyselinchi. Of the various varieties of C. grevillei, only the variety argus (Grunow) Cleve was retained. This differs from the nominate variety in the arrangement and shape of the areolae adjacent to the sternum of the araphid valve. The newly described taxon Campyloneis juliae De Stefano differs from all Campyloneis species in areolae ultrastructure and morphology of the valvocopulae. As for the fossil species C. gheyselinchi, the sternum valve areolae are similar to those of C. grevillei, but scarcity of frustules in the type material prohibited evaluation of its variability. For this reason we provisionally maintained its rank of species. The elaborate linking systems among the valvocopulae and valves in Campyloneis species appear to provide structural reinforcement against pressure from neighboring epiphytic diatoms and scouring of seagrass leaves.  相似文献

Populations of the toxic, epiphytic dinoflagellate Gambierdiscus toxicus Adachi et Fukuyo are asSociated closely with Jania sp. on Hitiaa and Papara fringing reefs in Tahiti. Small populations were also observed to be asSociated with Amphiroa sp. and Halimeda opuntia (L.) Lamouroux. The cells attached themselves to the thallus by means of a short thread. When the thalli were irradiated, the cells began to detach from them and swim around the branches. The swimming cells stopped and attached to substrata when a disturbance occurred. The attached cells began to swim within a short time under light conditions when the thallus of Jania sp. were placed near the attached cells. Amphiroa sp. and H. opuntia also induced this re-commencement of swimming of the attached cells. These observations suggest that G. toxicus usually swims around macroalgal thalli on coral reefs. When sudden disturbance or strong water motion occurs, they attach to the surface of macroalgae and are not dispersed. Soon after water motion becomes slow, the cells begin to swim into the water around the thalli. The epiphytism of G. toxicus is different from epiphytic pennate diatoms, most of which adhere to the thallus all the time. The population of G. toxicus is maintained as an asSociation to a limited number of species of macroalgae which support the re-commencement of swimming after disturbance.  相似文献

Large epiphytic and epilithic diatom species hosting other diatoms were observed in several fresh‐ and brackish water sites in Southern California. The most commonly encountered hosts were species forming long filaments attached to rocks or macroalgae, Hydrosera whampoensis (Schwarz) Hendey, Melosira varians Agardh, Pleurosira laevis (Ehrenberg) Compere and Terpsinoe musica Ehrenberg. These large diatoms often had smaller diatoms attached, usually to the girdle bands and occasionally to the mucilage pads connecting the cells. For example, cells of T. musica were observed supporting growth of a diverse diatom assemblage composed of species of the genera Achnanthes, Achnanthidium, Amphora, Cocconeis and Tabularia; Synedra sp. was attached to M. varians and B. paxillifer; and Cocconeis placentula was seen on H. whampoensis. Thus, large epiphytic and epilithic diatoms seem to provide suitable sites for attachment of small epiphytic diatom species, and it appears that this phenomenon is more common than previously thought.  相似文献

The diatom flora in a 164 cm long sediment core obtained from Jiaozhou Bay (Yellow Sea, China) was analyzed in order to trace the response of diatoms to environmental changes over the past 100 years. The sediment core was dated by 210Pb and 137Cs and represented approximately 100 years (1899–2001 A.D.). The flora was mainly composed of centric diatoms (59–96%). The concentration of diatoms declined sharply above 30 cm (after ~ 1981 A.D.), while the dominant species changed from Thalassiosira anguste-lineatus, Thalassiosira eccentria, Coscinodiscus excentricus, Coscinodiscus concinnus and Diploneis gorjanovici to Cyclotella stylorum and Paralia sulcata. Species richness decreased slightly, and the cell abundance of warm-water species increased. We argue that these floral changes were probably caused by climate change in combination with eutrophication resulting from aquaculture and sewage discharge.  相似文献

Thalli of four species of the charophycean green alga Coleochaete Bréb.; C. irregularis, C. soluta, C. orbicularis, and C. scutata, were examined using light and electron microscopy. The parenchymatous nature of the plant bodies of C. orbicularis and C. scutata became apparent when the degree of cellular association in these species was compared with that of parenchymatous land plant tissues, the pseudoparenchymatous thalli of C. soluta, and the branched filaments of C. irregularis. Coleochaete soluta was shown to be morphologically and phylogenetically transitional between the more primitive branched filamentous species (C. irregularis) and the more advanced discoid species (C. orbicularis and C. scutata). The branching patterns observed in C. soluta suggested a possible pathway for the evolutionary development of land plant parenchyma from branched, filamentous charophycean green algae.  相似文献

A Pikea species attributed to Pikea californica Harvey has been established in England since at least 1967. Previously, this species was believed to occur only in Japan and Pacific North America. Comparative morphological studies on field-collected material and cultured isolates from England, California, and Japan and analysis of organellar DNA restriction fragment length polymorphisms, detected using labeled organellar DNA as a non-radioactive probe, showed that English Pikea is conspecific with P. californica from California. Both populations consist of dioecious gametophytes with heteromorphic life histories involving crustose tetrasporophytes; 96% of organellar DNA bands were shared between interoceanic samples. A second dioecious species of Pikea, P. pinnata Setchell in Collins, Holden et Setchell, grows sympatrically with P. californica near San Francisco but can be distinguished by softer texture, more regular branching pattern, and elongate cystocarpic axes. Pikea pinnata and P. californica samples shared 49–50% of organellar DNA bands, consistent with their being distinct species. Herbarium specimens of P. robusta Abbott resemble P. pinnata in some morphological features but axes are much wider; P. robusta may represent a further, strictly sub-tidal species but fertile material is unknown. Pikea thalli from Japan, previously attributed to P. californica and described here as Pikea yoshizakii sp. nov., are monoecious and show a strikingly different type of life history. After fertilization, gonimoblast filaments grow outward through the cortex and form tetrasporangial nemathecia; released tetraspores develop directly into erect thalli. Tetrasporoblastic life histories are characteristic of certain members of the Phyllophoraceae but were previously unknown in the Dumontiaceae. Japanese P. yoshizakii shared 55 and 56% of organellar DNA bands with P. californica and P. pinnata, respectively; phylogenetic analysis indicated equally distant relationships to both species. Pikea yoshizakii or a closely similar species with the same life history occurs in southern California and Mexico.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Surprisingly few data compare the apparent responses of diatoms and macroinvertebrates to metals in streams. We examined variation in metals, diatoms and macroinvertebrates between 51 streams in metal‐mining areas of Wales and Cornwall, U.K., using a survey design with multiple reference and polluted sites. 2. To quantify variations in metals between sites, we calculated cumulative criterion unit (CCU) scores, a recently defined measure of total stream metal concentration and toxicity, to account for additive effects of each metal relative to putative toxic thresholds. We compared assemblage responses among epilithic diatoms and macroinvertebrates to CCU scores or individual metal concentrations using correlation and detrended correspondence analysis (DCA). 3. Macroinvertebrate diversity, richness and total abundance declined and evenness increased with increasing copper concentrations. Trends with CCU scores were significant but less pronounced. Some individual macroinvertebrate taxa varied significantly in abundance with CCU scores, copper or zinc, but overall assemblage composition correlated only with manganese, pH and nitrate. 4. Among diatoms, pH and conductivity explained the major variations in assemblage composition, and neither diversity, richness nor evenness varied with metal concentration. Nevertheless, the single strongest predictor of diatom assemblages on ordination axis 2 was the CCU score. The abundances of some macroinvertebrate taxa, particularly grazers, also explained significant variations in diatom assemblages that were linked to both metals and acid–base status. 5. Diatom species apparently tolerant of high metal concentrations included Psammothidium helveticum, Eunotia subarcuatoides, Pinnularia subcapitata and Sellaphora seminulum. Of these, P. helveticum, E. subarcuatoides and P. subcapitata were abundant at lower pH than S.seminulum and might indicate metal enrichment over different pH ranges. Sensitive species included Fragilaria capucina var. rumpens, Achnanthes oblongella and Tabellaria flocculosa. 6. We conclude that macroinvertebrates at these sites reflected metal pollution most strongly through variations in diversity while effects on diatoms were best reflected by changes in assemblage composition. We suggest that, with further refinement, CCU scores might be useful in evaluating the possible effects of metal pollution on benthic organisms in European rivers.  相似文献

Diatom blooms occur in many water bodies worldwide, causing significant ecological and social concerns. In order to understand the mechanisms of diatom blooms formation, the effects of varying phosphorus (P) concentration and hydrodynamics on the growth of diatoms were studied by combining results from field observations and laboratory experiments. The field investigation showed that spring diatom blooms (Cyclotella meneghiniana and Stephanodiscus hantzschii) occurred in Lake Taihu and Hanjiang River with similar environmental factors such as water temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen in 2008. Concentrations of total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen, and ammonia nitrogen (NH4-N) in Lake Taihu were significantly higher than the concentrations in the Hanjiang River. Laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate growth and physiological responses of four lotic diatoms (Cyclotella atomus, Fragilaria crotonensis, Nitzschia palea, and S. hantzschii, isolated from the Hanjiang River) and three lentic diatoms (C. meneghiniana, Melosira varians, and Stephanodiscus minutulus, isolated from Lake Taihu, Lake Donghu, and Guanqiao Pond, respectively) to various P concentrations under small-scale turbulent and standing conditions. Our results showed that, with turbulence, lotic diatoms C. atomus, F. crotonensis, N. palea, and S. hantzschii demonstrated a significant increase in affinity for P compared with lentic diatoms C. meneghiniana, M. varians, and S. minutulus. Moreover, lotic diatoms C. atomus, F. crotonensis, and N. palea had higher growth rates and photosynthetic efficiencies with small-scale turbulence than with standing conditions both in P-limited and P-replete conditions. Lotic species S. hantzschii and three lentic diatoms (C. meneghiniana, M. varians, and S. minutulus) grew well under standing conditions. Our results may explain our field observation that the occurrence of diatom blooms in lakes is often associated with higher TP concentrations whereas in rivers, diatom blooms occur at a wide range of TP concentrations under flows. Therefore, different hydrodynamics and nutrient concentrations determined the dominant diatom species, according to their habitat-dependent physiological characteristics.  相似文献

Life-history studies in culture were carried out on Colpomenia sinuosa (Mertens ex Roth) Derbès et Solier and Hydroclathrus clathratus (C. Agardh) Howe (Scytosiphonales, Phaeophyceae) from Japan. These species showed a heteromorphic life-history pattern with an alternation between erect thalli bearing plurilocular zoidangia and prostrate thalli bearing ectocarpoid plurilocular and unilocular zoidangia. Plurizoids released from erect and prostrate thalli developed into prostrate thalli. Unizoids, however, developed into erect thalli. Prostrate thalli produced plurilocular zoidangia in long-day conditions and unilocular zoidangia in short-day conditions at 10-20°C. Prostrate thalli of C. sinuosa formed ascocysts. Germlings of both species did not grow at 5°C.  相似文献

The identity of two phaeophycean taxa that monopolized the middle‐lower rocky intertidal zone of a coastal area chronically exposed to copper mine wastes in northern Chile was unraveled. One of them was preliminarily identified as the gametophytic stage of Scytosiphon lomentaria (Lyngbye) Link. The other, a dark crust, resembled the alternate stage of some Scytosiphon species. Comparative analysis of morphology, life history, and DNA sequences strongly suggests that crusts corresponded to sporophytic S. tenellus Kogame and confirm that erect thalli belonged to S. lomentaria. A clear segregation of erect and crustose thalli was found using internal transcribed spacer region 1 and RUBISCO spacer sequences. Furthermore, whereas crusts always grouped with S. tenellus, erect thalli always grouped with S. lomentaria. Life history studies failed to connect the two entities. First, field‐collected S. tenellus produced progeny that either recycled the crust, which reproduced by unilocular zoidangia, or developed into erect thalli. The latter, unlike typical gametophytic S. lomentaria, developed patchy sori of plurilocular zoidangia. Second, S. lomentaria displayed a direct‐type life cycle, in which progeny from erect individuals only developed into erect thalli and produced only plurilocular zoidangia. This constitutes the first experimental study on Scytosiphon from the Pacific coast of South America and the first report of S. tenellus on this coast. It is also the first report of the crustose stage of Scytosiphon appearing as a perennial and dominant algal species in a temperate rocky intertidal system.  相似文献
