Enzyme activity variation was assessed in several isofemale lines originating from two Hungarian Drosophila melanogaster populations. Samples from each population were taken from from two villages; 8-9 isofemale lines were established from each village. The activities of ADH, alphaGPDH, IDH and 6PGDH were determined in the adults (in the F1 generation) and in the larvae (in the F3 generation) as well. Enzyme activities were measured on starch gel after electrophoresis. The activity of the enzyme was detected in a single individual and it was also possible to determine its genotype. The results showed that most of the variation occurred within sites for all four enzymes. This within site variation was more or less equally partitioned into within and between isofemale line (family) components. A smaller portion of variation was attributable to the differences between the populations. Nevertheless, adult alphaGPDH, and larval IDH and 6PGDH activities exhibited significant differences between the two populations. Variation in larval activities of all enzymes was higher than that of the adults, but 6PGDH had considerably higher variation in the adults. The greater variation in larval activities probably reflected the greater environmental variation in the microhabitat of the larvae compared to that of the adults. Larval activities of the investigated enzymes showed much stronger correlation than adult activities. The correlation pattern in the adults differed greatly between the two populations. 相似文献

Summary Mark-release-recapture experiments performed with natural populations of Drosophila at Mather, California show that flies tend to return to their area of original capture or an area ecologically similar to it. Such habitat choice explains the microgeographic genetic differentiation we observed in the population. This behavioral difference between the flies may have a genetic component or may be environmentally induced. Either way, the results help explain how high levels of genetic variation are maintained by natural selection in these species. 相似文献

Summary Adult tolerance of ethanol vapour in a closed system containing 12% ethanol in solution, decreases in a cline from southern to northern Australia. However a Darwin population is more tolerant than predicted from its latitude. Ethanol tolerance races in Australia have almost certainly evolved within the last 100–150 years, because of resource unavailability prior to that time. Within populations, variation among isofemale strains is lowest in the climatically extreme southern Melbourne (37°S) and northern Darwin and Melville I. (11–12°S) populations. This suggests low resource diversity within extreme populations compared with the climatically less extreme Brisbane (28°S) and especially Townsville (19°S) populations. For desiccation resistance, the population rankings are: Darwin Melbourne > Townsville > Brisbane Melville I. and for development time, rankings are similar: Darwin Melbourne < Townsville < Brisbane Melville I.Therefore resource utilization heterogeneity is greatest in populations not greatly stressed by desiccation and where development times are extended. In total therefore, the utilization of a diversity of resources is a feature of populations tending somewhat towards a K-strategy; this is emphasized by the relative heterogeneity among isofemale strains of these populations for desiccation resistance and to a lesser extent development times. The D. melanogaster gene pool can be viewed as made up of climate-associated races. Since the ethanol tolerances of adjacent (and climatically similar) Darwin and Melville I. are very different, resource utilization races may occur within climatic races. Such a mosaic of resource utilization races are more likely in climatically extreme than in optimal habitats. 相似文献

Summary
D. pavani
Brncic 1957, is a neotropical species found in Chile and in a part of Argentina along the eastern slope of the Andes. The present paper describes the mitotic and salivary gland chromosomes of this species and gives a composite map of the Standard gene arrangement.Natural populations ofD. pavani are polymorphic with respect to the gene orders in their chromosomes. The observed variations in the gene arrangements are due to complex included and overlapping paracentric inversions. In none of the populations or in the crosses studied were found the hypothetical intermediate steps needed for the establishment of the phylogeny of the gene orders present in nature. The qualitative and quantitative data on the distribution and frequency of inversions show no pronounced geographic variations. The high incidence of inversion heterozygotes and the absence of the intermediate steps between the gene arrangements found in nature, seem to indicate an adaptive nature of the polymorphism observed inD. pavani

Two species of Ectocarpus, E. siliculosus (Dillw.) Lyngb. and E. fasciculatus Harv., occupying the same habitat at Port St Mary, Isle of Man, and apparently subject to the same environmental conditions, exhibit markedly different responses to copper. The greater tolerance shown by E. siliculosus is unlikely to be attributable to direct local selection, but may result from immigration of copper-tolerant individuals from highly selective habitats nearby. E. siliculosus would appear to be a more variable species than E. fasciculatus, thereby being more readily affected by the forces of natural selection. 相似文献

Genetic variation at 59 gene loci coding for enzymes (50) and larval proteins (9) has been studied in sympatric populations of Drosophila melanogaster and D. simulans from insular and continental origin. The average number of alleles per locus, the mean proportion of polymorphic loci and the mean heterozygosity are similar both within and between species. There are however some significant differences between D. simulans populations in the genotypic frequencies for four polymorphic loci. 相似文献

Wolbachia are maternally inherited bacteria that commonly spread through host populations by causing cytoplasmic incompatibility, often expressed as reduced egg hatch when uninfected females mate with infected males. Infected females are frequently less fecund as a consequence of Wolbachia infection. However, theory predicts that because of maternal transmission, these "parasites" will tend to evolve towards a more mutualistic association with their hosts. Drosophila simulans in California provided the classic case of a Wolbachia infection spreading in nature. Cytoplasmic incompatibility allowed the infection to spread through individual populations within a few years and from southern to northern California (more than 700 km) within a decade, despite reducing the fecundity of infected females by 15%-20% under laboratory conditions. Here we show that the Wolbachia in California D. simulans have changed over the last 20 y so that infected females now exhibit an average 10% fecundity advantage over uninfected females in the laboratory. Our data suggest smaller but qualitatively similar changes in relative fecundity in nature and demonstrate that fecundity-increasing Wolbachia variants are currently polymorphic in natural populations. 相似文献

Population structure concerning P element activity was investigated in two natural Drosophila populations. These populations are very different as far as in the viability spectrum is concerned. In one population, the Raleigh, United States population, genetic loads related to viability have been kept at a fairly high level. In the other population, the Nagasaki, Japan, population, the genetic loads tend to be stable at very low levels. In the Raleigh population it is estimated that on the average 4 copies of intact P elements that possess transposase activity exist in the genome. On the other hand only 0.7 complete copies are estimated to exist in the genome of the Nagasaki population. Heterogeneity in the P element copy number and significant positive linkage disequilibrium among occupied sites were detected in the Raleigh population. Our results, with some evidences which indicate that high mutation rate was caused by the P element, suggests that the large genetic loads in the Raleigh population are caused by the rapid invasion of P element in this population. 相似文献

A natural population of Drosophila melanogaster was examined for activity variation in the polymorphic enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase. The overall mean activity of the ADH-F strains proved to be approximately twice that of the ADH-S strains. Within each of the two electrophoretic classes, there was a wide spread of activity values and some overlap in activity between the classes. This variation should be taken into account when discussing the functional significance of the electrophoretically detectable polymorphism. 相似文献

Sex differences in ageing in natural populations of vertebrates 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3

In many long-lived vertebrates (including humans), adult males have shorter lifespans than adult females, partly as a result of higher annual rates of mortality in males and partly owing to sex differences in the rate of ageing. A probable explanation of the evolution of sex differences in ageing is that, in polygynous species, intense intrasexual competition between males restricts the number of seasons for which individual males are able to breed successfully, weakening selection pressures favouring adult longevity in males relative to females. If this is the case, sex differences in adult longevity and in the onset and rate of senescence should be greater in polygynous species than in monogamous ones and their magnitude should be related to the duration of effective breeding males compared with females. Here, we use data from longitudinal studies of vertebrates to show that reduced longevity in adult males (relative to females) is commonly associated with a more rapid decline in male than female survival with increasing age and is largely confined to polygynous species. The magnitude of sex differences in adult longevity in different species is consistently related to the magnitude of sex differences in the duration of effective breeding, calculated across surviving adults. Our results are consistent with the suggestion that sex differences in senescence in polygynous species are a consequence of weaker selection for longevity in males than females. 相似文献

Allozyme frequency data from natural populations of Drosophila buzzatii were analyzed for genotype-environment relationships. Allele frequency and heterozygosity at six loci polymorphic throughout eastern Australia and a number of environmental factors (both means and variabilities) were examined by a variety of multivariate techniques. Significant genotype-environment associations were found for five of the six loci, and after correcting for geographic location significant associations remained for Est-2 and Adh-1 gene frequencies and heterozygosities and for Pgm gene frequencies. The results are discussed in relation to selection and gene flow and provide the basis for laboratory studies to disentangle confounded effects of (1) environmental means and environmental variabilities and (2) allele frequency and heterozygosity, and thus to further test for and determine the nature of any natural selection at particular allozyme loci. This work was supported by a grant from the Australian Research Grants Committee to J. Six natural populations (three urban and three rural) of Drosophila melanogaster from India were analysed for chromosome inversions, revealing the presence of 19 different paracentric autosomal inversions. One new inversion has also been detected in a laboratory stock established from flies collected from Kerala. In total 20 different paracentric inversions in Indian D. melanogaster have been detected during the present study, and of these, 4 are common cosmopolitans; 2 are rare cosmopolitans; 7 are recurrent endemics; and 7 are unique endemics. The quantitative data clearly show that the urban populations are different from the rural ones with respect to inversion polymorphism. 相似文献
