Sex-ratio (SR) males produce predominantly female progeny because most Y chromosome sperm are rendered nonfunctional. The resulting transmission advantage of XSR chromosomes should eventually cause population extinction unless segregation distortion is masked by suppressors or balanced by selection. By screening male stalk-eyed flies, Cyrtodiopsis dalmanni, for brood sex ratio we found unique SR alleles at three X-linked microsatellite loci and used them to determine if SR persists as a balanced polymorphism. We found that XSR/XST females produced more offspring than other genotypes and that SR males had lower sperm precedence and exhibited lower fertility when mating eight females in 24 h. Adult survival was independent of SR genotype but positively correlated with eye span. We infer that the SR polymorphism is likely maintained by a combination of weak overdominance for female fecundity and frequency dependent selection acting on male fertility. Our discovery of two SR haplotypes in the same population in a 10-year period further suggests that this SR polymorphism may be evolving rapidly.  相似文献

Morphologic analysis of geographic strains of Musca domestica carried out on natural and laboratory experiments starting with 400 and 800 eggs showed phenotypic variations related with latitude. Females of the natural populations showed clines for several morphological traits of the wing, whereas male flies showed a reduction in the dispersion measures (s 2 and CV) of wing width and length. The same reduction was obtained for males, females and total number of flies of the natural populations in dispersion of the number of bristles on the fourth abdominal sternite. A significant negative correlation was observed for the head width of females and for the total number of flies emerged in the laboratory experiments started with 400 eggs. All flies produced by the experiments starting with 800 eggs showed a reduction in variability of dispersion of the bristles on the fourth abdominal sternite in the strains obtained from locations south of the area analyzed. Evolutionary aspects of these correlation coefficients between morphometric traits and latitude are discussed.  相似文献

Mating behaviour of red-eyed (wt) and brown-eyed (sepia) Drosophila melanogaster was studied under light conditions. Mating success was directly observed in mating vials and techniques usually applied in the studies of sexual selection ("female choice" and "multiple choice"). The comparison of sexual activity of mutant and wild types clearly indicates that they are not equally successful in matings. Sepia eye colour mutation decreases sexual activity of Drosophila melanogaster males, influences the preference ability of females and decreases the number of progeny from homogamic mating of the se x se type, as well as from heterogamic copulations in which sepia females take part. Non-random mating of wild type males and sepia females (in "multiple-choice" situation), with genetically and phenotypically different individuals, could be another mechanism for conservation of genetic polymorphism in natural populations.  相似文献

雌性对雄性表饰的偏好性有利于性别选择。目前尚不清楚这一偏好性是否只限于雄性表饰或这一偏好性实际上是源于影响后代适合度的基因。对于雄性可直接有利于雌性或其后代适合度的交配系统而言,答案是肯定的--雌性偏好于与对气候胁迫具有更强生理抗性的雄性交配。对果蝇Drosophila biarmipes 的室内研究已经证明了求偶过程中翅斑的作用,但是其生态学意义仍然不清楚。我们检验了有翅斑与无翅斑雄性果蝇D. biarmipes 及雌性偏好的雄性所产生的后代对环境胁迫的抗性是否不同。结果表明:在干燥或冷胁迫条件下,有翅斑的雄性果蝇比无翅斑的雄性果蝇的交配成功率明显要高。相反,在高湿条件下,无翅斑雄性果蝇的交配频率更高。我们也发现在较为干旱的条件下,与有翅斑雄性交配的雌性果蝇的生殖力以及所得后代从卵至成虫的存活率更高。我们的结果与优良基因性选择假说一致,说明交配选择能给雌性带来间接好处。这是对热带物种D. biarmipes翅色二型性生态学意义的首次报道。  相似文献

The occurrence of active, or autonomous, mariner elements was investigated by crossing white-peach mutant Drosophila simulans females with wild-type males from various geographic origins. From a total of 194 experimental crosses only 17 failed to produce progeny with eye mosaicism (MOS, i.e. pigmented spots in otherwise white-peach eyes). Therefore, active mariner elements inducing somatic excision of the copy inserted at the white locus are abundant in all populations sampled. In the experimental crosses the frequency of mosaic offspring ranged from 0 to 100%, showing that the phenotypic expression is highly variable. The MOS phenotype, measured by the number of spots on the eyes, is quite variable within the progeny of single crosses. Although a difference was observed in the average MOS score (percentage of mosaic flies) between northern and southern populations of France, there was no indication of long range variation between geographic populations. Neither was there a systematic difference between recently collected populations and samples kept several years as isofemale lines.  相似文献

Mate choice based on body size is widespread and can have numerous consequences. We present data, which show the effect of male and female body size on sexual selection in Drosophila ananassae. The relationships between wing size, locomotor activity, mating latency, courtship pattern, fertility and mating success were studied. Mating latency was negatively correlated with wing length and with locomotor activity, while wing length and locomotor activity was positively correlated in males as well as in females. In female- and male-choice, we found that mate choice influenced size-assortative mating by: (1) large and small males preferring to mate with large females, (2) large males successfully competing for large females, leaving small males to mate with small females. Males increased their reproductive success by mating with large and more fecund females. In addition, in pairs of long/short winged flies, long winged flies courted and mated more successfully than short winged flies and they also have longer duration of copulation and more progeny than short winged flies. We found sterile mating in pairs of small winged males and females.  相似文献

Studies of short or medium range geographic variations play an increasing role in ecological genetics, and sensitive techniques are required to detect them. In this respect, two sampling techniques were compared inD. melanogaster. The biological data were provided by the analysis of four natural populations from the same geographic area, Spain (one) and Southern France (three), for four morphometrical traits: abdomen and thoracic pigmentation, and wing and thorax lengths. Traits were measured on wild living females and on their progeny reared in the laboratory at 25°C. For progeny analyses, two techniques were compared: the usual isofemale line technique, sib families issued from a single female, and a new isogroup technique, the progeny produced by a group of 20 wild-collected parents. Large phenotypic variations were observed in wild living flies, corresponding to the unstability of natural environmental conditions during their development. Among laboratory grown flies, variations were much smaller. Between isogroups, differences were small, due to sampling error and some common environment effects. Variations between lines were much greater, thus demonstrating a strong genetic component. When different populations have to be compared, the isogroup technique should be preferred since, for the same amount of work, the lesser variability between groups provides a more precise characterization of the population means.  相似文献

The eyes of stalk‐eyed flies (Diopsidae) are positioned at the end of rigid peduncles (‘stalks’) protruding laterally from the head. Eye‐stalk length varies within the family and, in some species, varies between males and females. Larger eye‐stalks in males result from sexual selection for longer stalks, a trait that increases male reproductive success. In the present study, we examined whether an increase in eye‐stalk length results in an adjustment of wing size and shape to deal with the burden of bearing an exaggerated ‘ornament’. We compared wing morphology among ten species of stalk‐eyed flies that differ in eye‐span and the degree of sexual dimorphism. Mass‐specific wing length differed between males and females in seven out of the ten species. Nondimensional wing shape parameters differed between the species (P < 0.001), but mostly did not differ between males and females of the same species. Dimorphism in eye‐span closely correlated with dimorphism in wing length (r = 0.89, P < 0.001) and the correlation remained significant (r = 0.81, P = 0.006) after correcting for phylogenetic relationships. Once corrected for phylogenetic relatedness, the mass‐specific wing length of males (but not females) was weakly correlated with mass‐specific eye‐span (r = 0.66, P = 0.042). We propose that the observed proportional increase in wing length associated with increased eye‐span can facilitate aerial manoeuverability, which would otherwise be handicapped by the elevated moment of inertia imposed by the wider head. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 98 , 860–871.  相似文献

Sex-ratio drive, which results in males siring female-biased progeny, has been reported in several Drosophila species, including D. simulans. It is caused by X-linked drivers that prevent the production of Y-bearing sperm. In natural populations of D. simulans, the drivers are usually cryptic, because their spread has elicited the evolution of drive suppressors. We investigated autosomal suppression in flies from Madagascar, Réunion and Kenya. Autosomal suppressors were found in all three places, indicating that they are a regular component of drive suppression over this geographic area, where strong Y-linked suppressors also occur. These suppressors were suspected of being polymorphic in Madagascar and Réunion and proved to be polymorphic in Kenya. We developed a model simulating the evolution of neutral autosomal suppressors in order to explore the effects of the number of suppressor genes, their relative strength and the co-occurrence of Y-linked suppressors. The most interesting prediction of the model is that when suppression is multigenic, suppressor loci can remain polymorphic despite the absence of balancing selection if an equal sex-ratio is restored in the population before the suppressor alleles become fixed at all loci. The model also emphasises the importance of the sterility of distorters sons in suppressor dynamics.  相似文献

Several X-linked mutations that have associated sex chromosomal nondisjunction have been identified in the mouse. We describe a new semidominant X-linked mutation called patchy fur (Paf) that produces an abnormal coat. It maps to the distal end of the murine X chromosome very near the XY pseudoautosomal region. The degree of severity in affected mice is hemizygous males greater than homozygous females greater than heterozygous females. An unusual feature of Paf is that either the mutation itself or an inseparable chromosomal abnormality causes delayed disjunction of the X and Y chromosomes at meiotic metaphase I, which in turn results in approximately 19% XO progeny and slightly less than 1% XXY progeny from Paf/Y males. The effect occurs only in male carriers and thus must extend into the proximal end of the XY pairing region.  相似文献

Among collections of Triatoma spinolai from various sites in northern Chile, adults from coastal populations are invariably wingless, whereas inland populations show balanced alary polymorphism between wingless females and males that are either winged or wingless. Laboratory crosses showed that male offspring from normal-winged parents were always winged (88% long-winged) and those from long-winged male parents were all long-winged. The male offspring from wingless males always included winged males: 11/33 = 33%, of which 8/11 = 73% were long-winged. An X-linked mutation is proposed to inhibit wing development. Field studies of population demography indicate that male alary polymorphism is advantageous in the desert environment of northern Chile.  相似文献

Recent theoretical and empirical work has suggested that the X chromosome may play a special role in the evolution of sexually dimorphic traits. We tested this idea by quantifying sex chromosome influence on male relative eyespan, a dramatically sexually selected trait in the stalk-eyed fly, Cyrtodiopsis dalmanni. After 31 generations of artificial sexual selection on eyespan:body length ratio, we reciprocally crossed high- with low-line flies and found no evidence for maternal effects; the relative eyespan of F1 females from high- and low-line dams did not differ. However, F1 male progeny from high-line dams had longer relative eyespan than male progeny from low-line dams, indicating X-linkage. Comparison of progeny from a backcross involving reciprocal F1 males and control line females confirmed X-linked inheritance and indicated no effect of the Y chromosome on relative eyespan. We estimated that the X chromosome accounts for 25% (SE = 6%) of the change in selected lines, using the average difference between reciprocal F1 males divided by the difference between parental males, or 34%, using estimates of the number of effective factors obtained from reciprocal crosses between a high and low line. These estimates exceed the relative size of the X in the diploid genome of a male, 11.9% (SE = 0.3%), as measured from mitotic chromosome lengths. However, they match expectations if X-linked genes in males exhibit dosage compensation by twofold hyperactivation, as has been observed in other flies. Therefore, sex-linked expression of relative eyespan is likely to be commensurate with the size of the X chromosome in this dramatically dimorphic species.  相似文献

Drosophila falleni belongs to the quinaria species group, whose species vary considerably in patterns of wing and abdominal pigmentation. Drosophila falleni itself exhibits substantial variation among wild flies in abdominal spotting patterns. A selection experiment revealed that natural populations of D. falleni harbor high levels of genetic variation for spot number: in 10 generations of selection modal spot number within populations declined from 18 (the modal number in wild-caught females) to as low as zero. Rearing flies at different temperatures shows that some of the variation among wild flies is likely to reflect variation in the environmental conditions under which they developed. Fitness assays did not reveal any cost of reduced spot number with respect to development time, adult survival, or female fecundity. However, spotless flies were almost twice as susceptible to infection by the nematode parasite Howardula aoronymphium. Thus, selection exerted by nematode parasites may influence pigmentation patterns and other, genetically correlated traits in natural populations D. falleni.  相似文献

Genetic data were used to compare the structure of native house fly populations collected in North Dakota, Texas, and Florida. Recombination studies with mutant markers on chromosomes 3 and 4 indicated a lack of inversion polymorphism among the three populations in those areas of the genetic map studied. Significant differences were observed among flies from the three regions with regard to the frequency of 1) females that produced only male progeny, and 2) male-determining 3rd chromosomes (IIIm chromosomes). However, the North Dakota and Texas flies were more similar to each other than to the Florida flies since populations from the two former areas possessed a low frequency of both male-producing females and IIIm chromosomes; in contrast, the Florida population was void of females that produced males only and a high percentage if not all Florida males appeared to possess the IIIm male-determining mechanism. Tests for recessive lethal 3rd chromosomes showed that there was no significant difference in the frequency of lethal factors recovered from the North Dakota and Texas flies; the presence of IIIm chromosomes in Florida males precluded the recovery of lethal factors from this population by the method employed. The data suggest that house fly strains to be employed in genetic control programs should 1) originate from target control areas to avoid possible behavioral differences existing among flies from different locales, 2) be initiated with as many flies as possible to provide a background for the maintenance of variability, and 3) be renewed periodically with field-collected material since the genotype may be capable of rapid reorganization in response to laboratory selection pressures.  相似文献

The sex-ratio trait described in several Drosophila species is a type of naturally occurring X-linked meiotic drive that causes males bearing a sex-ratio X chromosome to produce progenies with a large excess of females. We have previously reported the occurrence of sex-ratio X chromosomes in Drosophila simulans. In this species, because of the co-occurrence of drive suppressors, the natural populations and the derived laboratory strains show an equal sex-ratio even when sex-ratio X chromosomes are present at a high frequency. The presence of sex-ratio X chromosomes is established via crosses with a standard strain that is devoid of drive suppressors. In this article, we show first that the sex-ratio trait in D. simulans results from the action of several X-linked loci. Second we describe drive suppressors on each major autosome as well as on the Y chromosome. The Y-linked factors suppress the drive partially whereas the autosomal suppression can be complete.  相似文献

The parasitic wasp Pseudeucoila bochei was the subject in experiments designed to detect a reliable method of mutation induction. Radiation doses of 360, 720, 1080, 1440, 1800 and 2160 R were given to pupae 15 or 18 days old or to freshly eclosed male and female wasps. The irradiation did not influence the survival of pupae. Dose-action responses were established and appeared to be dependent on the stage of development of the wasps at the moment of irradiation. The production of sons by virgin females showed that the germ cells of the adults were the most sensitive to irradiation. In contrast, the sperms of the male wasps irradiated as adults were the most resistant. Irradiation of males as pupae with 1880 or 2160 R on the 15th day or as adults led to a high frequency of amle progeny. The elimination of sperm cells from fertilization is discussed. Comparisons with Habrobracon, Nasonia and Drosophila showed that the germ cells of Pseudeucoila are more sensitive to irradiation. In the progeny from irradiated females and males 2 types of mutant were found, with yellow eye colour and with aberrations in the antennae.  相似文献

A highly unstable allele has been isolated at the white locus of Drosophila mauritiana, a sibling species of D. melanogaster. This allele, white-peach (wpch), mutates spontaneously in males and females to give both wild-type and bleached-white derivatives. The mutation frequency is about 10(-3) mutations/generation. There is no evidence for clustering among mutant progeny, and phenotypically wpch flies with mosaic patches of wild-type tissue in the eyes are frequently recovered. Another X-linked locus, plum, is destabilized when wpch is on the same X chromosome.  相似文献

Drosophila subobscura is geographically widespread in the Old World. Around the late 1970s, it was accidentally introduced into both South and North America, where it spread rapidly over broad latitudinal ranges. This invading species offers opportunities to study the speed and predictability of trait evolution on a geographic scale. One trait of special interest is body size, which shows a strong and positive latitudinal cline in many Drosophila species, including Old World D. subobscura. Surveys made about a decade after the invasion found no evidence of a size cline in either North or South America. However, a survey made in North America about two decades after the invasion showed that a conspicuous size cline had evolved and (for females) was coincident with that for Old World flies. We have now conducted parallel studies on 10 populations (13 degrees of latitude) of flies, collected in Chile in spring 1999. After rearing flies in the laboratory for several generations, we measured wing sizes and compared geographic patterns (versus latitude or temperature) for flies on all three continents. South American females have now evolved a significant latitudinal size cline that is similar in slope to that of Old World and of North American flies. Rates of evolution (haldanes) for females are among the highest ever measured for quantitative traits. In contrast, the size cline is positive but not significant for South or North American males. At any given latitude, South American flies of both sexes are relatively large; this in part reflects the relatively cool climate of coastal Chile. Interestingly, the sections of the wing that generate the size cline for females differ among all three continents. Thus, although the evolution of overall wing size is predictable on a geographic scale (at least for females), the evolution of size of particular wing components is decidedly not.  相似文献

A mutation of wing fragility that was not yet been revealed in adult housefly is described. Criss-cross inheritance of the character of fragility of the wing blade, which indicates localization of gene (fw) for this character in the X chromosome. Phenotypic expression of the mutant allele depends on sex. In male flies, the mutant allele in hemizygous state is expressed at the age of 2-3 weeks and older with penetrance close to 100%. In females, the mutant allele in homozygous state is lethal and in heterozygous state, totally recessive.  相似文献

Exaggerated male ornaments are predicted to be costly to their bearers, but these negative effects may be offset by the correlated evolution of compensatory traits. However, when locomotor systems, such as wings in flying species, evolve to decrease such costs, it remains unclear whether functional changes across related species are achieved via the same morphological route or via alternate changes that have similar function. We conducted a comparative analysis of wing shape in relation to eye‐stalk elongation across 24 species of stalk‐eyed flies, using geometric morphometrics to determine how species with increased eye span, a sexually selected trait, have modified wing morphology as a compensatory mechanism. Using traditional and phylogenetically informed multivariate analyses of shape in combination with phenotypic trajectory analysis, we found a strong phylogenetic signal in wing shape. However, dimorphic species possessed shifted wing veins with the result of lengthening and narrowing wings compared to monomorphic species. Dimorphic species also had changes that seem unrelated to wing size, but instead may govern wing flexion. Nevertheless, the lack of a uniform, compensatory pattern suggests that stalk‐eyed flies used alternative modifications in wing structure to increase wing area and aspect ratio, thus taking divergent morphological routes to compensate for exaggerated eye stalks.  相似文献
