The dispersal pattern of the African giant snail, Achatina fulica(Férussac) was examined by radio-tracking for six months. They showed typically nocturnal locomotory activities. Theiractivities differed among three developmental stages; juvenile, young adult, and old adult. Juveniles dispersed for the longestdistances. The most active juvenile moved 500 m in 6 months.Young adults and old adults travelled only within a narrow area, although the dispersal range for young adults was greater thanthat of old adults. An investigation was made of individual variation in resting site fidelity in the limpet,Cellana toreuma, with special attention to the adaptiveness of its homing behaviour. Limpets resting in the higher part of the study site showed strong resting site fidelity while those in the middle part showed weaker fidelity and tended to shift their resting sites to higher parts. Limpets resting in the lower part where there were an abundant supply of food and high predation intensity, had the strongest resting site fidelity and always returned to fixed resting sites with mucous sheets. The resting site fidelity varied continuously among individuals. Four causes for shift of resting site were detected: fleeing from starfish,Coscinasterias acutispina, pushing contests for resting site, non-returning excursions following and without following other's trail. The frequency of shift of resting sites due to each of these causes varied among individuals. Estimation of energy budget during about half a month showed that the location of resting site and frequency of shift of the site considerably affected the growth of limpets through energy expenditure by respiration and stationary mucus secretion, and energy intake by foraging. These variations were proposed as being a result not of density dependent dispersal nor adaptation to a single factor such as desiccation, heavy wave impacts or predation, but being due to individual difference in a compromise between two conflicting factors, susceptibility to predation and accessibility to food resources.  相似文献

Field observations on the biology ofMetriona elatior (Col.: Chrysomelidae) onSolanum elaeagnifolium (Solanaceae) from Uruguay. Specimens ofMetriona elatior were found feeding on leaves of the silverleaf nightshade,Solanum elaeagnifolium, from the eastern of Uruguay since 1984. According to a field study the young leaves were skeletonized since spring to early autumn by larvae and adults. Oothecae and pupae were found mainly on old leaves. The egg mean volume was of 0.614 mm3. Young plants of the weed were always killed after massive natural infections ofM. elatior. Therefore, this tortoise leaf-beetle may be studied as a potential biocontrol agent on populations ofS. elaeagnifolium.

Summary We displaced a small nest box containing stingless bees (Trigona (Tetragonisca)angustula) over distances of up to 1.6 meters in different directions and counted the numbers of returning foragers to measure the effects of this manipulation on the homing ability of bees. Bees find it hard to locate the nest box when it was displaced more than about 1 m backwards, forwards or sideways relative to the direction into which the nest entrance pointed. They do not find the nest when its height above ground is changed. The bees use landmarks in the vicinity of the nest to locate it: When the nest box is displaced and landmark positions are changed so that their angular position at the new nest site is the same as at the normal nest position their homing ability is less impaired than it is without changes in landmark positions. Our results show that the bees do not use the nest box itself as a landmark until they have approached the nest position to within about 1 meter with the aid of surrounding landmarks.  相似文献

Sesarma leptosoma an East African mangrove-dwelling crab, migrates twice a day from a system of known dens among the roots to well-defined feeding areas in the branches of trees, reaching 15 m high. Field experiments were performed to test whether chemical or visual cues are involved in the orientation and homing of this species to reach their feeding areas. Manipulation of the substratum at branch junctions, in order to alter possible chemical cues, did not affect homing ability in S. leptosoma. Moreover, crabs trained to cross an asymmetrical artificial wooden fork could still follow their preferred directions after (1) the fork branches had been switched, (2) the whole fork had been rotated around the trunk, resulting in a right-left inversion, and (3) the inversion of two wide black and white screens hiding most of the canopy from view of the climbing crabs. These results suggest that S. leptosoma may not rely on reference systems such as chemical trail-following and chemical or visual cues from the substratum, but probably depend on complex visual information from the surroundings trunks and/or from the sun's position integrated with junction sequence memory.  相似文献

Abstract. We examined the effects of starvation and oviposition on the reproductive physiology of the sweet potato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae). In a first set of experiments, females were starved as well as denied the opportunity to oviposit. The combined amounts of vitellogenin and vitellin per female increased by 69% when they were removed from plants for 24 h, egg load increased two-fold in approximately 4.5 h. The lipid content, on the other hand, decreased significantly over an 8 h perod. Thus, vitellogenin synthesis and the formation of mature eggs do not seem to be limited by the lack of nutrient intake or the ability to oviposit. In a second set of experiments, females were restricted to either young leaves of melon plants (Cumis melo), that are preferred oviposition sites, or to old melon leaves, that are non-preferred oviposition sites. At the end of the experiment, females on the old leaves contained significantly higher amounts of vitellogenins and vitellins than females confined to young leaves. These comparisons were made relative to body weight. The data also indicate that females accumulated both vitellogenins and lipids when confined to old leaves, but did not do so on young leaves. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that females of B. tabaci explicitly discriminate against older leaves for oviposition. We argue that examinations of changes in egg load or the combined vitellogenin and vitellin content that accompany oviposition can provide better insights into the oviposition behaviour of B. tabaci.  相似文献

Mucus is applied to substrates as snails move and when they rest. Beyond the use of mucus in movement and adhesion, the wide array of chemicals in mucus allows for supplemental use in communication. This communication is apparent in trail-following behavior. This study addresses the potential communication via mucus in selecting resting sites in a laboratory assay. In a series of six experiments, individuals of Cornu aspersum (which often rest on above-ground surfaces) were placed into lidded plastic containers with three or four sections swabbed with water (the control) or mucus, which included the test snail's own mucus, mucus from conspecifics from the same or a different container holding snails from the same lab colony, or from a different colony, and mucus from three additional snail species. The resting location was recorded on the following day. In two additional experiments, the facultative predator Rumina decollata was tested against conspecific and other snails' mucus. Individuals of C. aspersum preferentially rested in areas with the mucus of familiar conspecifics over mucus of unfamiliar conspecifics, a behavior that may contribute to homing and aggregation behaviors. There was evidence that juveniles may be less selective than adults. The mucus of only one of the three other species was avoided by individuals of C. aspersum. Unlike individuals of C. aspersum, individuals of the predator R. decollata avoided the mucus of conspecifics, which may be associated with less need for mate-finding in this self-fertilizing species. Individuals of R. decollata did not select among potential prey species.  相似文献

This study evaluated the influence of age and adult nutritional status of Ceratitis capitata males on their ability to inhibit female remating. Their roles and that of copula duration on the amount of sperm transferred to female spermathecae were also analysed. After emergence, adults were kept in separate groups according to their diets (either high protein – 6.5 g of brewer’s yeast, or low protein – 3.5 g of brewer’s yeast) and their age at the time of use in experiments (4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 days old). The results demonstrated that: (i) male age was not a factor that influenced remating when females mated with well‐nourished males; however, the youngest males (4 days old) in the low‐protein group were less efficient in preventing female remating; (ii) 12‐ and 16‐day‐old males fed on a high‐protein diet transferred and produced more sperm than males of other groups; (iii) there was no correlation between copula duration and the amount of sperm transferred to the female; the longest copula durations were observed among low‐protein‐diet/20‐day‐old males. These results suggest that age and nutrition influence the ability of the males to inhibit female remating. The sterile insect technique is most effective when females do not remate after coupling with sterile males, and therefore, the capacity to inhibit female remating is an important characteristic of males released in the field.  相似文献

Summary Ontogenetic patterns of volatile compounds identified in Dufour's gland extracts from queens and workers of the primitively eusocial sweat beeLasioglossum malachurum (K.) were compared. Only young unmated queens showed high proportions of isopentenyl esters, while macrocyclic lactones were dominant in old breeding queens, spring queens, and workers. In young queens the relative and absolute amounts of volatiles changed one day after mating. A discriminant analysis revealed significant differences in odor patterns of unmated and mated young queens. The fat body was the largest in young females, while eggs could be recorded only in breeding queens. Possible functions of different odor components in the investigated female groups are discussed.  相似文献

Miconia prasina (Melastomataceae) is an important colonizing species during early stages of secondary succession in Puerto Rico but its abundance declines with increasing stand age. We studied its demography for 2 yr (1995–1997) in three populations across a pasture to forest chronosequence (1‐, 12‐, and 25‐yr old) and in one population in a hurricane‐disturbed older forest (>60‐yr old). Vegetative growth was positive in the two young sites, but negative in the two older sites. The highest percentage of plants that flowered occurred in the two younger sites but highest seed production occurred in the 25‐yr‐old site. Although seed germination occurred in the two older sites, no seedlings established. Vegetative reproduction (root sprouts) was found in all sites, with most sprouts occurring in young sites. The 2 yr of census data were used to construct stage‐based transition matrices. In the two young sites, the average population growth rate was positive (λ > 1), while average population growth was negative in the two older sites (λ < 1). Elasticity, a measure of the effects of proportional changes in life‐history transitions to the long‐term population growth rate, varied across both stages and sites. Elasticity shifted from large plants in young sites to small plants in older sites. Across all sites, elasticities related to survival were more important than those of growth or vegetative reproduction. The demographic analysis supported the previous observations of changes in the density of M. prasina based on the chronosequence and also suggests that establishment via seeds must occur prior to abandonment in active pastures.  相似文献

The author undertook a field survey of the capuchin (Cebus apella) lasting 60 days from December 1976 to January 1977, and determined the basic daily activity of its groups and spacing of group members in the day time. Furthermore, based on studies of various types of interactions between individuals of the groups, he was able to show that (1) decisive rank orders exist both among adults and among sub-adults of both sexes; (2) grooming at the resting time is peculiar to adult males; (3) with quite mild agonistic interactions being maintained, a high tolerance exists between the group members; (4) alpha males represent individuals which can be called leaders of groups; and (5) a strong psychological or spiritual bond exists among the adult males, which can be termed a “male-bond.” Furthermore, according to comparative studies on some adjoining groups, it was found that the group structure is strongly influenced by the individuality or character of the adult males of each group. The present findings are generally in agreement with those forC. apella studied by the author and other researchers in other localities. It can be safely said therefore that these findings are probably common to this species of monkey. Based on a comparison with findings for three other species ofCebus, the author attempts to clarify the points of difference betweenC. apella and these three other species ofCebus from the viewpoint of behavioral science and sociology.  相似文献

Feeding behavior, in an ad libitum situation on potato plants in the laboratory, was continuously observed for approximately 7 h/day on 2 successive days for 18 adult femaleLeptinotarsa decemlineata. Additional behaviors were also recorded including resting, walking, biting, local movements, grooming, defecating, and regurgitating. These data were used to calculate a time budget for the various behaviors. The feeding data were analyzed to describe the structure of feeding for young adult females on their normal host plant. The criterion for a meal (minimum intermeal interval) was determined to be 286 s. This criterion was used to distinguish between intra- and intermeal interruptions in feeding for all subsequent analyses. Meals taken from leaves that were young, medium aged, or old did not differ, but on average beetles took 60% of their meals from young leaves. Meal size and meal duration were equally good predictors of when a meal would end. Feeding from stems was a prominent feature for most beetles. The stem meals had much longer durations than leaf meals, but stem feeding did not affect subsequent leaf feeding. The structure of feeding by these beetles is compared with that found in other insects, especiallyLocusta migratoria.  相似文献

The sexual behavior of males and females ofEurycotis floridana was investigated and the various associated behavioral sequences are described. Olfactometer data proved that the male produces a volatile sex pheromone attractive at a distance to conspecific females. The male initiates courtship behavior by exposing the glandular areas on the anterior parts of abdominal tergites 2, 7, and 8. This male calling behavior was observed throughout the day. The males can mate when 8 days old, whereas virgin females are sexually receptive 18 days after becoming adults. Once attracted near the male, the female opens her genital atrium and climbs on the back of the male, where she feeds on the glandular secretions that oozed around a little tuft of setae on the first tergite. These setae are mechanoreceptors and they are stimulated when licked by the females, which informs the male that she is in a proper position for copulation.  相似文献

Mechanisms used by a scelionid egg parasitoid to locate its gerrid host eggs were studied using field experiments. Parasitism by Tiphodytes gerriphaguswas higher in exclosures containing adults of Limnoporus dissortisthan in cages without gerrids. Higher densities of adult gerrids were associated with higher rates of parasitism, but dispersion of aquatic vegetation did not apparently affect rates of parasitism. T. gerriphagusmay use visual cues, chemical cues, or a combination of both to locate their hosts. We discuss the possible influence of T. gerriphaguson the reproductive behavior of its hosts.  相似文献

The biosynthesis and metabolism of purine alkaloids in leaves ofCamellia ptilophylla (cocoa tea), a new tea resource in China, have been investigated. The major purine alkaloid was theobromine, with theophylline also being present as a minor component. Caffeine was not accumulated in detectable quantities. Theobromine was synthesized from [8-14C] adenine and the rate of its biosynthesis in the segments from young and mature leaves from flush shoots was approximately 10 times higher than that from aged leaves from 1-year old shoots. Neither cellfree extracts nor segments fromC. ptilophylla leaves could convert theobromine to caffeine. A large quantity of [2-14C] xanthine taken up by the leaf segments was degraded to14CO2 via the conventional purine catabolic pathway that includes allantoin as an intermediate. However, small amounts of [2-14C] xanthine were also converted to theobromine. Considerable amounts of [8-14C] caffeine exogenously supplied to the leaf segments ofC. ptilophylla was changed to theobromine. These results indicate that leaves ofC. ptilophylla exhibit unusual purine alkaloid metabolism as i) they have the capacity to synthesize theobromine from adenine nucleotides, but they lack adequate methyltransferase activity to convert of theobromine to caffeine in detectable quantities, ii) the leaves have a capacity to convert xanthine to theobromine, probably via 3-methylxanthine.  相似文献

Homing rates and initial orientations after release from different directions were investigated in the solitary bee Dasypoda altercator. Homing rates and the proportion of individuals returning on the day of release declined with distance, implying that homing from greater distances is not based solely on the use of landmarks. A long duration of return (often not on the same day) and high efficiency of homing (four bees out of 10 returned from a 4 km distance over the lake), as well as an increase in average return speed ? 10 m/min) with distance of bees homing on the same day suggest that homing is also not based upon radial scatter as the sole tactic. This is supported by the observation that the initial orientations of the bees were not equally probable. Departures towards the sun greatly exceeded those away from the sun and the bees also tended to depart in cardinal geographical (or geomagnetic) directions, preferring meridional directions (especially southward) to parallel ones (of which east was preferred). Departure directions did not depend on wind direction but did depend, to some extent, on the landscape features of release sites. However, bees neither tended to depart in the direction of the nest, nor did homing success correlate with the direction of departure in relation to that of the nest.  相似文献

The survival of three isolates ofZoophthora radicans (NW 250, NW 253 & NW 182) as hyphal bodies in dried larvae ofPlutella xylostella stored at 4, 10 and 20°C and 20% R.H was determined. After storage at 20°C, the production of conidia by all isolates was unaffected after 2 weeks but diminished increasingly after 4 and 8 weeks and was entirely lost after 16 weeks. By comparison conidium production at 10°C was unaffected after 16 weeks (isolates NW 250 and NW 182) and, 24 weeks (NW 253) of storage though it declined rapidly in all isolates thereafter. At 4°C many conidia were produced by all isolates even after 34 weeks of storage. These results are consistent with work on other entomophthoralean fungi in dried cadavers suggesting that this may be a common survival strategy in these fungi. NW 250, 253 and 182 were isolated fromP. xylostella in Malaysia and Taiwan, where conditions allow the host to remain active throughout the year. None produced resting sporesin vivo orin vitro but as hosts are always available the ability to survive short dry periods is probably more important than long-term survival for which resting spores are most adapted.   相似文献

The purpose of this study was to describe the autumn migration dynamics of juvenile (n = 3075) and adult (n = 596) robin Erithacus rubecula in Hungary. Capturing and ringing of birds took place at five bird ringing stations of Actio Hungarica between 13 August and 27 October, 2004. The number of captured juvenile and adult individuals rated to one net was the lowest in the reeds of Izsák and the highest in the woody areas of Szalonna, where adults were present at a higher proportion. The migration dynamics of the robin showed that the end of September and the beginning of October was the peak time for passing through Hungary. Based on the estimated time of the 10% of daily capture, it can be stated that juvenile birds started their migration as early as the end of August or at the beginning of September while the migration of the adults started later. The migration started earliest in Szalonna and latest in Izsák. The comparison of daily catch dynamics (based on the estimated time of 10% and 50% of daily captures) of juveniles and adults between study sites showed that similarity of daily capture was higher in the case of juveniles. The five study sites had different qualities from the point of view of the robins’ habitat preference. Our results showed that the reed-bed of Izsák had only peripheral importance while the other forest and bushy study areas played a key role in resting and feeding during the migration of the robin.  相似文献

Synopsis The status of knowledge of spawning among the five shallow waterChaetodon species in the western Atlantic is reviewed. Spawning has been observed for three species in Puerto Rico, St. Croix and the Bahamas, with possible courtship in a fourth.Chaetodon aculeatus spawned near the time of sunset over objects on the reef as single female/male pairs or as two females and one male, with pair spawning in rapid succession. Spawning occurred during much of the lunar month from February to April and it is uncertain whether any lunar periodicity to spawning exists. Male-male aggression was noted. Spawning sites (coral heads) were alternated daily and it is likely that females spawn only once every two days. A single female produced as many as 2090 eggs in a single spawning.Chaetodon capistratus spawned during much of the lunar month from February to April. It spawned about 5 min afterC. aculeatus, occasionally using the same sites, and alternated sites daily. A female produced as many as 3710 eggs in one spawning.Chaetodon striatus spawned from February to April but it is unknown if it has any lunar spawning cycle. No predation attempts by piscivores on spawning adults were seen. Predation byMelichthys niger on eggs ofC. striatus occurred. No egg predation was observed forC. aculeatus andC. capistratus. With an assumed four month reproductive season, alternate day spawning and observed egg production values,C. aculeatus andC. capistratus produce respectively about 100 000 and 200 000 eggs per large female per year. The reproductive strategy of smaller species may be to produce moderate numbers of eggs per day over a spawning season of at least a few months while larger species may produce more eggs per day for a shorter period.  相似文献

We compared the response of ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) to the creation of canopy gaps of different size (0.13, 0.26, and 0.50 ha) and age (1 and 7 years) in a bottomland hardwood forest (South Carolina, USA). Samples were collected four times in 2001 by malaise and pitfall traps placed at the center and edge of each gap, and 50 m into the surrounding forest. Species richness was higher at the center of young gaps than in old gaps or in the forest, but there was no statistical difference in species richness between old gaps and the forests surrounding them. Carabid abundance followed the same trend, but only with the exclusion of Semiardistomis viridis (Say), a very abundant species that differed in its response to gap age compared to most other species. The carabid assemblage at the gap edge was very similar to that of the forest, and there appeared to be no distinct edge community. Species known to occur in open or disturbed habitats were more abundant at the center of young gaps than at any other location. Generalist species were relatively unaffected by the disturbance, but one species (Dicaelus dilatatus Say) was significantly less abundant at the centers of young gaps. Forest inhabiting species were less abundant at the centers of old gaps than in the forest, but not in the centers of young gaps. Comparison of community similarity at various trapping locations showed that communities at the centers of old and young gaps had the lowest similarity (46.5%). The community similarity between young gap centers and nearby forest (49.1%) and old gap centers and nearby forest (50.0%) was similarly low. These results show that while the abundance and richness of carabids in old gaps was similar to that of the surrounding forest, the species composition between the two sites differed greatly.  相似文献
