Genomic stress resulting from the interspecific hybridization of marsupials has been shown to lead to hypomethylation and transposable element over-amplification. Here we investigated both methylation status and transposable element (LINE-1) activity in an F1 hybrid between the black (Diceros bicornis) and white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum). Our data show that in this instance the hybrid genome was not characterised by gross hypomethylation and LINE-1 over-amplification thus extending previous investigations on eutherian mammals. These findings underscore observations that wide-scale genomic instability involving hypomethylation and mobile element release may be marsupial specific phenomena within Mammalia. CTX-M- and AmpC-type beta-lactamases comprise the two most rapidly growing populations among the extended-spectrum cephalosporinases. The evolution and dissemination of resistance genes encoding these enzymes occur mostly through the transmission of plasmids. The high prevalence of clinical isolates of Enterobacteriaceae producing the plasmid-mediated extended-spectrum cephalosporinases resembles an epidemic of plasmids, and has generated serious therapeutic problems. This review describes the emergence and worldwide spread of various classes of plasmid-mediated extended-spectrum cephalosporinases in Salmonella and other Enterobacteriaceae, the transfer mechanism of the plasmids, detection methods, and therapeutic choices.  相似文献

The syndrome of major depression is widely regarded as a specific mental illness that has increased to the point where it will be second in the International Burden of Disease ranking by 2020. This article examines the assumption that major depression is a specific illness, that it is rapidly increasing, and that a medical response is justified. I argue that major depression is not a natural entity and does not identify a homogenous group of patients. The apparent increase in major depression results from: confusing those who are ill with those who share their symptoms; the surveying of symptoms out of context; the benefits that accrue from such a diagnosis to drug companies, researchers, and clinicians; and changing social constructions around sadness and distress. Standardized medical treatment of all these individuals is neither possible nor desirable. The major depression category should be replaced by a clinical staging strategy that acknowledges the continuous distribution of depressive symptoms. Trials that test social and lifestyle treatments as well as drugs and cognitive behavioral therapy across different levels of severity, chronicity, and symptom patterns might lead to the development of a coherent evidence-based stepped treatment model.  相似文献

Background:

A higher risk of preterm birth among black women than among white women is well established in the United States. We compared differences in preterm birth between non-Hispanic black and white women in Canada and the US, hypothesizing that disparities would be less extreme in Canada given the different historical experiences of black populations and Canada’s universal health care system.

Methods:

Using data on singleton live births in Canada and the US for 2004–2006, we estimated crude and adjusted risk ratios and risk differences in preterm birth (< 37 wk) and very preterm birth (< 32 wk) among non-Hispanic black versus non-Hispanic white women in each country. Adjusted models for the US were standardized to the covariate distribution of the Canadian cohort.

Results:

In Canada, 8.9% and 5.9% of infants born to black and white mothers, respectively, were preterm; the corresponding figures in the US were 12.7% and 8.0%. Crude risk ratios for preterm birth among black women relative to white women were 1.49 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.32 to 1.66) in Canada and 1.57 (95% CI 1.56 to 1.58) in the US (p value for heterogeneity [pH] = 0.3). The crude risk differences for preterm birth were 2.94 (95% CI 1.91 to 3.96) in Canada and 4.63 (95% CI 4.56 to 4.70) in the US (pH = 0.003). Adjusted risk ratios for preterm birth (pH = 0.1) were slightly higher in Canada than in the US, whereas adjusted risk differences were similar in both countries. Similar patterns were observed for racial disparities in very preterm birth.

Interpretation:

Relative disparities in preterm birth and very preterm birth between non-Hispanic black and white women were similar in magnitude in Canada and the US. Absolute disparities were smaller in Canada, which reflects a lower overall risk of preterm birth in Canada than in the US in both black and white populations.In the United States, a higher risk of preterm birth among black women than among white women is well established.13 This racial disparity is of great concern because preterm birth is a leading cause of perinatal mortality and is predictive of developmental problems and adverse health outcomes later in life.4 The underlying causes of the racial disparity in preterm birth in the US are not well understood, although research has suggested contributing roles for a wide range of factors, including socioeconomic disadvantage,5 poor neighbourhood conditions (e.g., poverty, crime),5,6 lack of access to health care,7 psychosocial stress,8 racial discrimination9 and adverse health behaviours.10Rates of preterm birth have consistently been lower in Canada than in the US.11,12 However, in contrast to the US, little is known about differences in rates by race or ethnicity in Canada. There is evidence that African-born and Caribbean-born women in the provinces of Quebec and Ontario have higher rates of preterm birth than Canadian-born women.1315 Although the magnitude of these differences is smaller than the disparity in preterm births between black and white women in the US,16 foreign-born black women in the US have been found to be at lower risk of preterm birth than US-born black women.17,18In both Canada and the US, socioeconomic conditions at both individual and neighbourhood levels are important predictors of preterm birth.1921 Although the income gap between black and white people is markedly smaller in Canada than in the US,22 black populations in both countries have lower education levels, higher unemployment rates and a greater likelihood of living in low-quality neighbourhoods compared with white populations.23 Canada and the US share similar social and economic influences, yet the historical experiences of black populations and the social welfare systems (e.g., universal health care) are quite different in the 2 countries. Black people constitute about 13% of the total US population, but only about 3% of the Canadian population.24,25 The overwhelming majority of Canada’s black population are immigrants who entered the country after 1960 and their descendants, whereas more than 85% of black Americans can trace their ancestry 3 or more generations in the US, with most being descendants of slaves.22The objectives of our study are twofold. First, using data from a new cohort linking birth registrations with information from the 2006 Canadian long-form census, we present Canada-wide estimates of differences in preterm birth rates between black and white populations. Second, we use comparable methodology to compare racial differences in preterm birth rates between Canada and the US. Given different historical experiences of black populations in the 2 countries, as well as Canada’s commitment to universal health care and its general perception as a more egalitarian society than the US,22 we hypothesized that we would observe smaller racial disparities in the rates in Canada than in the US.  相似文献

Analysing hair cortisol concentrations (HCCs) is a minimally invasive way to retrospectively assess long-term stress, and its application in studies of animal welfare and stress has attracted considerable interest. However, not only stress-related effects but also hair-specific characteristics and external influences can affect HCCs and interfere with the interpretation of results. Thus, it was the aim of this study to investigate the impact of daylight and UV irradiation on cortisol concentrations in the hairs of pigs and cattle. We also examined whether a potential irradiation effect on HCCs depended on the colour of the hair. For this purpose, black and white hair samples from 18 Saddleback pigs and 18 Holstein Friesian cattle were exposed to artificial light (both visible and UV) and compared with control hair samples from the same animals kept in the dark. Exposure to artificial light significantly decreased HCCs in both pigs (P < 0.05) and cattle (P < 0.001), and hair colour had an influence on HCCs, with black hair showing higher cortisol levels than white hair (cattle: P < 0.001, pigs: P = 0.07). The interaction between light exposure and hair colour was significant in both pigs (P < 0.01) and cattle (P < 0.001), so light exposure reduced HCCs in porcine white hair but not black hair. In cattle, light-exposed white hair exhibited lower hair cortisol levels than control white hair or black hair. These results demonstrate that artificial light irradiation degrades hair cortisol or favours its elimination by structural changes of the hair matrix. However, this effect was only detectable in white hair, indicating that the melanin pigments in black hair absorbed radiation, thereby reducing the effects of photodegradation. Compared with other known influencing factors on HCCs, such as age and body region, the influence of light irradiation was relatively low in this in vitro experiment. However, further studies should investigate this influence under real-life animal conditions, such as outdoor and indoor housing.  相似文献

Phylogeny of the butterfly genera Araschnia, Mynes, Symbrenthia and Brensymthia (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Nymphalini) is reconstructed, based on 140 morphological and ecological characters. The resulting tree shows that Araschnia is a sister group of the clade including Symbrenthia, Mynes and Brensymthia (Symbrenthia is paraphyletic in the respect of remaining genera; Symbrenthia hippalus is a derived species of Mynes). The species-level relationships within Araschnia are robustly supported as follows: (A. davidis (prorsoides ((zhangi doris) (dohertyi (levana burejana))))). Analysis of the wing colour-pattern characters linked with the seasonal polyphenism in the Araschnia species suggests that the black and white coloration of the long-day (summer) generation is apomorphic. Biogeographically, the origin of polyphenism in Araschnia predates the dispersal of some Araschnia species towards the Palaearctic temperate zone, and the ecological cause of the polyphenism itself is then probably not linked with thermoregulation. The possible mimetic/cryptic scenarios for the origin of Araschnia polyphenism are discussed.  相似文献

First, the mating system of a “flier” odonate species that continues patrolling without perching,Cordulia aenea amurensis Selys, is briefly reviewed. Adult males of this species search for mates for a long distance along the shore of a pond if male density is very low, but localize their patrol within a short range and defend the ranges if the density is high (Ubukata 1975, 1979). Secondly, a model of mate searching by vision and territoriality for flier dragonflies is proposed. The main assumptions of the model are: (1) a male with a fixed length of visual range (D) patrols with a constant velocity (V) on a straight line; (2) he turns in the opposite direction at 2 fixed points (distance=L); (3) female arrival probability is uniform in both spatial and temporal dimensions; (4) the females stay at the arrival point for a fixed time (C); (5) if a male discovers a female he copulates with her without fail and leaves the line. From the model the following are predicted: if , the species (type 1) has an optimal length of patrol range even if the female arrival rate is uniform; ifD is smaller than the right hand side of the inequality (type 2), the mating probability becomes higher as the patrol range increases, if there is no other male. On the basis of the above model the concept of an “unusurpable territory” is defined to exist at a given time after the start of patrol and the probability of unusurpability (P) is calculated as a function ofD, V, L, M (male density-1) andT (duration of patrol).P drops abruptly if the length of patrol range (L) exceeds that of unusurpable territory at high male densities. Therefore, there appears to be an optimal length of patrol range when there are other males, agreeing with the data fromC. a. amurensis. Summary Among birds of the Bismarck Archipelago, only certain combinations of the species in a guild coexist on islands, and some species that are very similar ecologically have mutually exclusive distributions. Diamond (1975) interpreted these patterns as biologically significant, involving effects such as competition. Connor and Simberloff (1979) claimed such patterns to be not recognizably different from random, because they were scarcely distinguishable from those generated by a null distribution supposedly not incorporating competition.On examining the analysis by Connor and Simberloff, we find that it actually yields the opposite conclusion: three faunas tested have grossly non-random structures, while their test is unworkable for the fourth fauna. The method of Connor and Simberloff for generating a null distribution has many fatal weaknesses: dilution of relevant data from guilds with irrelevant data from the whole species pool; hidden incorporation of effects of competition into the constraints; inability to recognize a checkerboard, the extreme example of a distribution produced by competition; reliance on inefficient Monte Carlo simulations; severe constraints that sometimes make generation of a null distribution impossible; failure to weight species combinations; and failure to identify the direction of non-randomness or the species combinations most responsible.Finally, we use other recent studies by Simberloff and coleagues to examine the value of constructing null hypotheses in community ecology.  相似文献

Melanins are common feather pigments that contribute to signaling and crypsis. Melanins may also help feathers resist feather‐degrading bacteria (FDB). Two recent studies (Goldstein et al. 2004, Grande et al. 2004) tested the resistance of melanized versus unmelanized feathers to FDB using in vitro experiments, but draw opposite conclusions. Goldstein et al. (2004) concluded that melanized feathers resist FDB more than unmelanized feathers, while Grande et al. (2004) concluded that unmelanized feathers resist FDB more than melanized feathers. To resolve this conflict in the literature, we replicated previous studies but included additional tests not previously used. We inoculated melanized and unmelanized feathers of domestic geese Anser anser domesticus, with the FDB Bacillus licheniformis and measured bacterial activity every two days over two weeks. Three metrics of bacterial activity on feathers were measured: soluble protein content around feathers in solution, bacterial growth on feathers, and loss of feather mass. The latter two metrics were not considered in the aforementioned studies, which indirectly measured bacterial activity. We conducted two trials, one in which feathers were sterilized by autoclaving before inoculation (Goldstein et al. 2004, Grande et al. 2004), and a second in which feathers were sterilized by ethylene oxide gas. This allowed us to test whether autoclaving, done in previous studies, influences bacterial activity on feathers and could confound results. In both trials, unmelanized feathers degraded earlier, supported greater bacterial growth, and lost more mass than melanized feathers. These results support the findings of Goldstein et al. (2004); melanized feathers are more resistant to FDB than unmelanized feathers. Thus, using direct metrics of bacterial activity, we resolve a current conflict in the literature. We also found that autoclaving feathers influences FDB activity on them, and thus autoclaving should be avoided in future studies.  相似文献

Humans have evolved strong preferences for equity and fairness. Neuroimaging studies suggest that punishing unfairness is associated with the activation of a neural network comprising the anterior cingulate cortex, anterior insula, the ventral striatum, and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). Here, we report the neuronal correlates of retribution and “forgiveness” in a scenario, in which individuals first acted as a recipient in an Ultimatum Game, and subsequently assumed the position of a proposer in a Dictator Game played against the same opponents as in the Ultimatum Game. Most subjects responded in a tit-for-tat fashion, which was accompanied by activation of the ventral striatum, corroborating previous findings that punishing unfair behaviour has a rewarding connotation. Subjects distinguished between the human opponent and computer condition by activation of the ventromedial PFC in the human condition, indicative of mentalising. A substantial number of subjects did not retaliate. Neurally, this “forgiveness” behaviour was associated with the activation of the right (and to a lesser degree left) DLPFC, a region that serves as a cognitive control region and thus may be involved in inhibiting emotional responses against unfairness.  相似文献

Abstract

Survey data from a number of developing countries show that a considerable proportion of parous women report that they had their first birth one or more years before they first had sexual intercourse. In this paper, I use data from eight African Demographic and Health Surveys to explore factors that contribute to cross‐national differentials in the prevalence of these “immaculate conceptions.” The results suggest that this data problem results not only from recall errors, but also from the fact that some respondents misinterpret the question on first sexual intercourse and report their age at the onset of intercourse with either their first or current husband rather than their age at sexual initiation.  相似文献

Despite the common use of bright light exposure for treatment of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), the underlying biology of the therapeutic effect is not clear. Moreover, there is a debate regarding the most efficacious wavelength of light for treatment. Whereas according to the traditional approach full-spectrum light is used, recent studies suggest that the critical wavelengths are within the range of blue light (460 and 484 nm). Our previous work shows that when diurnal rodents are maintained under short photoperiod they develop depression- and anxiety-like behavioral phenotype that is ameliorated by treatment with wide-spectrum bright light exposure (2500 lux at the cage, 5000 K). Our current study compares the effect of bright wide-spectrum (3,000 lux, wavelength 420- 780 nm, 5487 K), blue (1,300 lux, wavelength 420-530 nm) and red light (1,300 lux, wavelength range 600-780 nm) exposure in the fat sand rat (Psammomys Obesus) model of SAD. We report results of experiments with six groups of sand rats that were kept under various photoperiods and light treatments, and subjected to behavioral tests related to emotions: forced swim test, elevated plus maze and social interactions. Exposure to either intense wide-spectrum white light or to blue light equally ameliorated depression-like behavior whereas red light had no effect. Bright wide-spectrum white light treatment had no effect on animals maintained under neutral photoperiod, meaning that light exposure was only effective in the pathological-like state. The resemblance between the effects of bright white light and blue light suggests that intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) are involved in the underlying biology of SAD and light therapy.  相似文献

Conventional DNA ladder assay has certain shortcomings such as loss of DNA fragments during sample processing, involvement of multiple steps and requirement of expensive reagents. The present study demonstrates a rapid, easy-to-perform cost-effective method for detection of apoptotic DNA fragments with considerable improvement in the sensitivity by avoiding loss of DNA fragments. It involves a few minutes of procedure involving direct lysis of cells with dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO), brief vortexing, addition of 2% SDS–TE buffer, and a single step of centrifugation. This cost- and time-efficient method reduces the assay time considerably and can be used for a large number of samples with excellent sensitivity.  相似文献

False lumen thrombosis (FLT) in type B aortic dissection has been associated with the progression of dissection and treatment outcome. Existing computational models mostly assume rigid wall behavior which ignores the effect of flap motion on flow and thrombus formation within the FL. In this study, we have combined a fully coupled fluid–structure interaction (FSI) approach with a shear-driven thrombosis model described by a series of convection–diffusion reaction equations. The integrated FSI-thrombosis model has been applied to an idealized dissection geometry to investigate the interaction between vessel wall motion and growing thrombus. Our simulation results show that wall compliance and flap motion can influence the progression of FLT. The main difference between the rigid and FSI models is the continuous development of vortices near the tears caused by drastic flap motion up to 4.45 mm. Flap-induced high shear stress and shear rates around tears help to transport activated platelets further to the neighboring region, thus speeding up thrombus formation during the accelerated phase in the FSI models. Reducing flap mobility by increasing the Young’s modulus of the flap slows down the thrombus growth. Compared to the rigid model, the predicted thrombus volume is 25% larger using the FSI-thrombosis model with a relatively mobile flap. Furthermore, our FSI-thrombosis model can capture the gradual effect of thrombus growth on the flow field, leading to flow obstruction in the FL, increased blood viscosity and reduced flap motion. This model is a step closer toward simulating realistic thrombus growth in aortic dissection, by taking into account the effect of intimal flap and vessel wall motion.

Heterosis research over the past century has focused primarily on diploid plants and animals. This is despite the fact that most heterotic organisms contain polyploid events in their recent and/or ancient past and various important crop species are heterotic polyploids. We present an argument for the study of heterosis within polyploid systems and give examples of how their study can improve current hypotheses and generate new ones. Polyploid systems allow experiments not possible in diploids but the insights gained must be incorporated into models to explain heterosis at all levels.  相似文献
