BackgroundIn many countries, young women of reproductive age have been especially affected by the HIV epidemic, which have fostered research to better understand how HIV infection influences and shapes women´s fertility and reproductive and sexual decisions. In Brazil, few studies have focused on the impact of the HIV epidemic on contraceptive choices among women living with HIV (WLHIV).ObjectiveThis study evaluates the impact HIV infection may have in the access to female sterilization in Brazil, using a time-to-event analysis.MethodsA cross-sectional quantitative study (GENIH study) was conducted between February 2013 and April 2014 in the city of São Paulo, comparing two probabilistic samples of 975 WLHIV and 1,003 women not living with HIV (WNLHIV) aged 18 to 49. Sexual and reproductive data was collected retrospectively in order to reconstruct women''s reproductive trajectories. Given the objectives of this study, the analysis was restricted to women with parity one or more and, in case of WLHIV, to those sterilized after HIV diagnosis and not infected through vertical transmission. The final sample analysis included 683 WNLHIV and 690 WLHIV. A series of multivariable-adjusted Cox models estimated the probability of being sterilized after HIV diagnosis, compared with WNLHIV. Models were adjusted for schooling, race/color, and stratified by parity at last delivery (1–2, 3+). Hazard ratios were calculated for female sterilization, and separately for interval and postpartum procedures (performed in conjunction with caesarean section or immediately after vaginal delivery). Additionally, information regarding unmet demand for female sterilization was also explored.FindingsNo statistical difference in the overall risk of sterilization between WLHIV and WNLHIV in the two parity-related groups is observed: HR = 0.88 (0.54–1.43) and 0.94 (0.69–1.29), respectively, among women with 1–2 children and those with three and more. However, significant differences regarding the impact of HIV infection at sterilization are observed depending on the timing and the type of sterilization procedure. The probability of obtaining an interval sterilization is significantly lower for WLHIV compared to those not living with HIV. The reverse occurs regarding postpartum sterilization. Although sterilization is mainly performed in conjunction with caesarean section in Brazil, it is evident that caesarean sections are not the sole factor increasing the risk of sterilization among WLHIV.ConclusionThe results indicate barriers in the access to services offering interval sterilization for WLHIV and certain facilitation in obtaining the procedure in conjunction with caesarean section. Health policy makers at local and national levels should promote institutional changes in order to facilitate access to interval sterilization and to confront the sensitive discussion of WLHIV’s eligibility for postpartum sterilization. It is also urgent to increase access to a wider range of contraceptive methods for WLHIV and promote dual method protection strategies. Moreover, since condom use may decrease in the future in the context of the preventive effect of antiretroviral therapy, promoting dual methods will expand the choices regarding the reproductive rights of women living with HIV.  相似文献

Question: How do seed germination and subsequent seedling survival of O. semicastrata (Hance forma litchiifolia How) vary with respect to distance from parent trees and conspecific density in different types of tropical forest? Are there effects of soil biota on O. semicastrata that systematically depend on distance from parent trees and conspecific density? Do soil pathogens differently affect survival of O. semicastrata in different types of tropical forest? Location: Tropical lowland rain forest and tropical montane rain forest in Jianfengling National Nature Reserve, Hainan Island, China. Methods: Individual adult O. semicastrata trees were selected in lowland rain forest and montane rain forest. Soil was collected at a distance of 0‐5 m or 15‐20 m from the parent tree. Soil samples from each distance were combined into a bulk sample. Half of the soil sample was sterilized by autoclaving. Surface‐sterilized seeds were then added to the soil material in shade‐houses at both forests. Results: Germination of O. semicastrata seeds at low‐ or high‐seed density was barely affected by the sterilization procedure. In both forests, seedlings grown in non‐sterilized soil collected close to parent trees had significantly higher mortality compared to those in sterilized soil. In contrast, seedling survival with soil collected far from parent trees was not affected by the soil sterilization procedure. Conclusions: Host‐specific pathogens concentrated in the soil around parent trees may regulate community structure of tropical trees at the stage of seedling development.  相似文献

Summary Franseria dumosa Gray and Hilaria rigida (Thurb.) Benth. ex Scribn. seedlings were grown in a glasshouse in potted soil which was collected from the Mojave Desert near Mercury, Nevada. The soil represented areas under living shrubs and also areas between shrubs. Soil was either steam sterilized or not steam sterilized. The sterilization resulted in greatly decreased yields of plants possibly because of induced P deficiency. It was suggested that symbiotic mycorrhizae necessary for P absorption for the species involved might have been eliminated by the sterilization. The effect did not hold for a noncalcareous soil well supplied with available P. Soil sterilization increased both Mn and Zn in plants. There was an interaction in that plants did not grow well in soil from under shrubs regardless of steaming indicating possible allelopathic effects. re]19720711  相似文献

Maggot debridement therapy (MDT) refers to the use of blowfly larvae to clean or debride an infected wound. Most commonly, larvae of Lucilia sericata (Meigen) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) are used, and are sterilized prior to use to ensure no further bacterial infections are introduced during treatment. Current methods sterilize eggs from laboratory‐reared blowfly colonies, after which sterile early second instar maggots can be provided to hospitals for use in treatment. Maggots not required for treatment are used for colony regeneration, in which sterility is not maintained. The ability to maintain sterility beyond this would allow further research into fly–bacteria interactions and the effects of different bacteria on the blowfly lifecycle. This study aimed to produce a colony of sterile adults, using current egg sterilization practice, but maintaining sterility through to pupation and emergence. The production of a sterile colony allows further research into the impact of bacteria on fly development and survival. Eggs were placed on a sterile food source within autoclaved plant tissue culture containers to allow growth under sterile conditions. Nutrient agar plating of sterilized and non‐sterilized eggs, larvae and adults (post‐emergence), as well as the pupation medium and feed source in nutrient broth confirmed the aerobic sterility of all samples involved. The lifecycle of L. sericata was successfully completed through pupation to emergence with no effects on lifespan or oviposition by the newly emerged, sterile adult colony.  相似文献

Summary Finger millet or locally known asragi (Eleusine coracana Gaertn.), sorghum (Sorghum vulgare Pers.), greengram (Phaseolus aureus Roxb.) and soybean (Glycine max L.) plants were raised on sterilized, sterilized and reinoculated with soil microflora and unsterile sandy loam soil in pots for 45 days. Qualitative studies on the edaphosphere microflora indicated the continuation of rhizosphere effect beyond the root surface (rhizosphere) region. Increased microbial population in the sterilized soil was attributed to the effect of sterilization in favour of faster establishment of added microorganisms. In general, steam sterilization had detrimental effects, whereas crop growth had beneficial effects on the soil physical properties. Ragi and greengram were found superior to sorghum and soybean in improving soil structure as evidenced by increased aggregate stability and hydraulic conductivity and decreased dispersion. Soil aggregates of less than 2.00 mm size were found to be increased due to crop growth. The rhizosphere microflora in association with roots of the growing plants is suggested to play a pivotal role in improving soil structure.  相似文献

Abstract

Prior to the U.S.‐Mexico Border Survey of Maternal and Child Health and Family Planning conducted by the Centers for Disease Control in 1979, little information was available about the extent to which Mexican‐Americans in the U.S., relative to Anglos, were using male and female sterilization for contraceptive reasons. This paper compares Mexican‐Americans and Anglos for (a) prevalence of contraceptive sterilization; (b) social and demographic characteristics of users of contraceptive sterlization; and (c) tuning during the reproductive life cycle when contraceptive sterilization occurs. For both Mexican‐Americans and Anglos, contraceptive sterilization (male and female) was the second most prevalent method used. Anglos were more likely to use male than female sterilization (22.4 per cent and 19.5 per cent), while Mexican‐Americans were much more likely to use female than male sterilization (23.2 per cent and 5.8 per cent). Having an unwanted last live birth and/or high parity were important factors related to the use of female sterilization for both Mexican‐Americans and Anglos.  相似文献

Abstract

Fertility histories from the 1973 United States National Survey of Family Growth are analyzed in the context of a model of contraceptive use based on a Semi‐Markov processes. This model provides a means of constructing data‐based estimates of probabilities of pregnancy following initial acceptance of a contraceptive method. The algorithm used to construct these estimates recognizes multiple intervals of contraceptive used prior to the events: pregnancy, marital dissolution, or sterilization.

Estimated probabilities of the events marital dissolution and pregnancy for women seeking to delay pregnancy are presented, as are probabilities of contraceptive sterilization for women seeking to prevent subsequent pregnancy. These estimates are compared to one‐step transition probabilities and directly observed NSFG data on pregnancy, marital dissolution, or contraceptive sterilization in an attempt to judge the validity of the model and to assess biases which may result from its use.  相似文献

Abstract

Ethological studies suggest that animal populations that live in crowded conditions display a number of behaviors that tend to limit the size of the population, such as aberrant forms of sexual behavior, small litter sires, a higher incidence of spontaneous abortion, ineffectual maternal care, and even cannibalism of their young. Studies of household crowding in North America cities have produced only modest and selective evidence that crowding has similar effects among humans. In this paper, we examine the effect of household crowding on marital sexual relations, on desire for additional children, and on fetal and child loss in Bangkok, Thailand, a city with a much wider range of household crowding than is typically found in North America. In spite of the wider range, and higher mean level of crowding, we find that both the objective and subjective dimensions of crowding have only modest selective effects on sexual and reproductive behavior.  相似文献

Terminal sterilization of musculoskeletal allografts by gamma radiation minimizes the risk of disease transmission but impairs allograft mechanical properties. Commonly employed crosslinking agents can sterilize tissues without affecting mechanical properties adversely; however, these agents are toxic. Genipin is reported to be a benign crosslinking agent that strengthens mechanical properties of tissues; however, the antimicrobial capacity of genipin is largely unknown. The present study’s aims were: (1) to assess the sporicidal potential of genipin, (2) to improve antimicrobial capacity by changing chemical and physical treatment conditions. To establish genipin’s sterilization potential Bacillus subtilis var. niger spore strips were treated with 0–10 % genipin in PBS or in 1:1 DMSO:PBS up to 72 h at room temperature (RT). Sterilizing doses and concentrations of genipin were used to treat B. pumilus and Geobacillus stearothermophilus spores to assess broader spectrum sporicidal activity of genipin. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed to evaluate gross morphological changes after genipin treatment. Optimal sterilization conditions were determined by evaluating the effects of temperature (RT-50 °C), DMSO:PBS ratio (0:100–100:0), and treatment duration (24–72 h) on B. subtilis. Genipin penetration of full thickness bovine patellar tendon and cortical bone specimens was observed to assess the feasibility of the agent for treating grafts. Initial studies showed that after 72 h of treatment at RT with 0.63–10 % genipin/DMSO:PBS B. subtilis spore strips were sterilized; 0.63 % genipin/PBS did not sterilize spore strips at 72 h at RT. Genipin doses and concentrations that sterilized B. subtilis spore strips sterilized B. pumilus and G. stearothermophilus spore strips. SEM revealed no gross morphological differences between untreated and treated spores. Treatment optimization resulted in sterilization within 24 h with 100 % PBS, and DMSO facilitated sporicidal activity. Genipin penetrated full thickness patellar tendon specimens and 3.72 ± 0.58 mm in cortical bone specimens. Genipin sterilizes B. subtilis, B. pumilus, and G. stearothermophilus spore strips. It penetrates soft and hard tissues at doses previously shown to be non-toxic and to improve mechanical strength in collagen-rich soft tissues. Further studies are indicated to assess genipin’s effects on the mechanical properties of genipin-sterilized grafts, the ability of genipin to eradicate infectious species other than spores, and to assess whether sterilant activity persists after penetrating tissues and biomaterials.  相似文献

Aseptic processing and terminal sterilization become increasingly challenging as medical devices become more complex and include active biologics. Terminal sterilization is preferred for patient safety and production costs. We aimed to determine how sterilization using supercritical CO2 (scCO2) with low levels of peracetic acid (PAA) affects amino acids and human epidermal growth factor (EGF) as a model protein. In a benchtop reactivity test, the amino acids methionine, tryptophan, arginine and lysine reacted with low levels of PAA in solution. At PAA levels used for scCO2 sterilization, however, mass spectrometry only identified oxidative adducts on methionine and tryptophan. Mass spectrometry analysis of EGF exposed to scCO2/PAA identified oxidative adducts on residues Met21, Trp49 and Trp50, as well as a low level of truncations after residues Trp49 and Trp50. Importantly, processing of EGF in solution with scCO2 did not affect its native conformation, and sterilized EGF maintained its activity in cell proliferation assays. When processing samples in lyophilized form with scCO2/PAA, amino acids did not react with PAA and the presence of adducts was strongly reduced on methionine and tryptophan, both as single amino acids and in EGF. Truncation after tryptophan residues did not occur. EGF sterilized in the lyophilized form retained its activity when processing occurred with added moisture. These results have significant implications for the maintenance of biological function in sterilized decellularized scaffolds and the ability to manufacture terminally sterilized combination devices containing therapeutic peptides or proteins.  相似文献

P2, the proportion of offspring sired by the second male to mate, is an indicator of the outcome of postcopulatory sexual selection, which occurs through sperm competition and/or cryptic female choice. We determined the appropriate dose of gamma radiation for sterilization of adult males and, using the sterile male technique, measured P2 in the adzuki bean beetle, Callosobruchus chinensis. Adult males of C. chinensis were almost completely sterilized when irradiated at 80 Gy. Thus, we obtained sterile males through irradiation at this dose. Neither the probability of female first mating nor the probability of female remating was affected by whether females were paired with normal or sterile males. The P2 calculated from the hatching success of eggs laid by females that mated both with normal and sterile males did not differ between reciprocal mating sequences, indicating that the sterilization has no effect on sperm fertilizing ability. The P2 was estimated at 0.25. This study shows that female remating in C. chinensis means the coexistence of sperm from two males and thus the occurrence of postcopulatory sexual selection within the female reproductive tract, resulting in first-male sperm precedence.  相似文献

Abstract: Surgical sterilization by tubal ligation has been proposed as a technique for controlling white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) populations in urban or suburban areas where other forms of population control are impractical, but little is known about demographic rates in populations under management with surgical sterilization. We analyzed seasonal movement and mortality data collected during a 4-year study of surgical sterilization in suburban Chicago, Illinois, USA. We calculated 323 home range size estimates for 62 individual females within season and year. Non-gravid females without young exhibited home range sizes 52% larger than gravid females and females with fawns. Mortality rate was positively correlated with home range size. We suggest that the increased mortality rate observed in surgically sterilized females may be due to greater movement by non-maternal females. Population managers will need to account for potential effects of maternal status on movement and mortality when considering the use of sterilization for management of suburban populations of white-tailed deer.  相似文献

Input of labile organic carbon can enhance decomposition of extant soil organic carbon (SOC) through priming. We hypothesized that long‐term nitrogen (N) input in different chemical forms alters SOC pools by altering priming effects associated with N‐mediated changes in plants and soil microbes. The hypothesis was tested by integrating field experimental data of plants, soil microbes and two incubation experiments with soils that had experienced 10 years of N enrichment with three chemical forms (ammonium, nitrate and both ammonium and nitrate) in an alpine meadow on the Tibetan Plateau. Incubations with glucose–13C addition at three rates were used to quantify effects of exogenous organic carbon input on the priming of SOC. Incubations with microbial inocula extracted from soils that had experienced different long‐term N treatments were conducted to detect effects of N‐mediated changes in soil microbes on priming effects. We found strong evidence and a mechanistic explanation for alteration of SOC pools following 10 years of N enrichment with different chemical forms. We detected significant negative priming effects both in soils collected from ammonium‐addition plots and in sterilized soils inoculated with soil microbes extracted from ammonium‐addition plots. In contrast, significant positive priming effects were found both in soils collected from nitrate‐addition plots and in sterilized soils inoculated with soil microbes extracted from nitrate‐addition plots. Meanwhile, the abundance and richness of graminoids were higher and the abundance of soil microbes was lower in ammonium‐addition than in nitrate‐addition plots. Our findings provide evidence that shifts toward higher graminoid abundance and changes in soil microbial abundance mediated by N chemical forms are key drivers for priming effects and SOC pool changes, thereby linking human interference with the N cycle to climate change.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to determine the effect of the sterilization process and the age of the medium at the time of inoculation on the development of Clostridium botulinum type 62A. Whole milk was autoclaved at 121 C for 18 or 30 min and inoculated with C. botulinum so as to contain 2,000 to 5,000 spores per milliliter. No effort was made to remove dissolved oxygen or to reduce the oxidation-reduction (O/R) potential of the medium by adding sodium thioglycolate. A 3- and a 5-day-old medium were used to study the influence of aging. Eh determinations were made periodically on inoculated and uninoculated samples. Culture development was followed by use of an oval tube counting procedure. The technique used to sterilize the milk influenced the initial O/R potential as well as the autoreductive capacity of the medium. The initial Eh of whole milk sterilized in 500-ml volumes for 18 min was 234 mv. In milk sterilized for 30 min it was 192 mv. The lag phase was 7 days in the former and 5 days in the latter. The exponential growth phases were similar. Autoreduction occurred in sterilized milk. The Eh of uninoculated milk sterilized for 18 min decreased 45 mv in 6 days. In milk sterilized for 30 min the decrease was 63 mv. In milk inoculated 3 or 5 days after sterilization the lag phase was shorter than when the medium was inoculated within 2 hr after autoclaving, regardless of the sterilization procedure employed. The autoreductive property of sterilized whole milk plays a major role in the development of C. botulinum type 62A.  相似文献

Results are presented from experimental and theoretical studies of the sterilization of medical products by the plasmas of dc glow discharges in different gas media. The sterilization efficiency is obtained as a function of discharge parameters. The plasma composition in discharges in N2 and O2 is investigated under the operating conditions of a plasma sterilizer. It is shown that free surfaces of medical products are sterilized primarily by UV radiation from the discharge plasma, while an important role in sterilization of products with complicated shapes is played by such chemically active particles as oxygen atoms and electronically excited O2 molecules.  相似文献

BackgroundFemale sexual dysfunction (FSD) includes female orgasmic disorder, female sexual interest or arousal disorder, and genito-pelvic pain or penetration disorder. FSD affects 40% of women worldwide, but it is understudied and likely undertreated. Natural products are frequently used by women to treat FSD, but scientific evidence of their efficacy is lacking.ObjectiveThis systematic review and meta-analysis focused on the study of the efficacy of natural products on FSD.Study designSystematic review and meta-analysis of existing studies on natural products in the treatment of FSD.MethodsThe literature search included MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trial databases for studies published from January 2000 to February 2020. The quality and the level of evidence of the studies were assessed. The association between natural products and FSD was summarized using standardized mean differences (SMD) with a 95% confidence interval (CI).ResultsA total of 536 studies were identified, with 20 of them meeting the criteria. According to this meta-analysis, Tribulus terrestris showed a significant positive effect in improving overall female sexual function (SMD = 1.12, 95% CI = 0.46 - 1.79, p = 0.001) and individual sexual arousal (SMD = 1.03, 95% CI = 0.22 - 1.84, p = 0.013), sexual desire (SMD = 1.08, 95% CI = 0.52 - 1.63, p ≤ 0.001) and sexual orgasm (SMD = 0.51, 95% CI = 0.02 - 1.00, p = 0.040) domains compared to placebo. Panax ginseng was found to be effective in treating sexual arousal (SMD = 0.54, 95% CI = 0.11 - 0.97, p = 0.014) and sexual desire (SMD = 0.59, 95% CI = 0.27 - 0.90, p < 0.001) compared to placebo. Meanwhile, other natural products reviewed in this study, such as Trifolium pretense, did not differ significantly from placebo in terms of improving FSD.ConclusionPreliminary evidence suggests that Tribulus terrestris and Panax ginseng may be effective as alternative treatments for FSD in a clinical setting.  相似文献

Objectives : Reduced sexual quality of life is a frequently reported yet rarely studied consequence of obesity. The objectives of this study were to 1) examine the prevalence of sexual quality‐of‐life difficulties in obese individuals and 2) investigate the association between sexual quality of life and BMI class, sex, and obesity treatment—seeking status. Research Methods and Procedures : Subjects consisted of 1) 500 participants in an intensive residential program for weight loss and lifestyle modification (BMI = 41.3 kg/m2), 2) 372 patients evaluated for gastric bypass surgery (BMI = 47.1 kg/m2), and 3) 286 obese control subjects not seeking weight loss treatment (BMI = 43.6 kg/m2). Participants completed the Impact of Weight on Quality of Life‐Lite, a measure of weight‐related quality of life. Responses to the four Sexual Life items (assessing enjoyment, desire, performance, and avoidance) were analyzed by BMI, sex, and group. Results : Higher BMI was associated with greater impairments in sexual quality of life. Obese women reported more impairment in sexual quality of life than obese men for three of four items. Gastric bypass surgery candidates reported more impairment in sexual quality of life than residential patients and controls for most items. In general, residential patients reported levels of impairment greater than or equal to controls. Discussion : Obesity is associated with lack of enjoyment of sexual activity, lack of sexual desire, difficulties with sexual performance, and avoidance of sexual encounters. Sexual quality of life is most impaired for women, individuals with Class III obesity, and patients seeking gastric bypass surgery.  相似文献

To survive the juvenile stage, giant clam juveniles need to establish a symbiotic relationship with the microalgae Symbiodinium occurring in the environment. The percentage of giant clam juveniles succeeding in symbiosis establishment (“symbiosis rate”) is often low, which is problematic for seed producers. We investigated how and why symbiosis rates vary, depending on whether giant clam seeds are continuously reared in UV treated or non treated seawater. Results repeatedly demonstrated that symbiosis rates were lower for UV treated seawater than for non treated seawater. Symbiosis rates were also lower for autoclaved seawater and 0.2-µm filtered seawater than for non treated seawater. The decreased symbiosis rates in various sterilized seawater suggest the possibility that some factors helping symbiosis establishment in natural seawater are weakened owing to sterilization. The possible factors include vitality of giant clam seeds, since additional experiments revealed that survival rates of seeds reared alone without Symbiodinium were lower in sterilized seawater than in non treated seawater. In conclusion, UV treatment of seawater was found to lead to decreased symbiosis rates, which is due possibly to some adverse effects common to the various sterilization techniques and relates to the vitality of the giant clam seeds.  相似文献

Abstract

Utilizing a subsample of the 1970 National Fertility Survey and discriminant analysis, the choice of contraceptive method was examined. First, choice from among rhythm, chemicals, condoms, oral pill, and IUD was examined. Two significant characteristic dimensions were isolated. The first dimension was interpreted as a distinction among methods from more‐effective to less‐effective. The second dimension was concluded to represent an aesthetics‐health dimension, dividing methods between coitus‐related versus not‐coitus‐related. Second, the choice between these methods and sterilization was examined. The results indicated that income and the number of births to be averted play an important role in the choice of sterilization.  相似文献

The sterile insect technique (SIT), based on the principles of population and behavioral ecology, is widely used to suppress or eradicate target pest insect populations. The effectiveness of SIT depends on the ability of released sterile males to mate with and inseminate wild females; however, the use of gamma radiation to induce sterility negatively affects both somatic cells as well as reproductive cells. Consequently, sterilization by irradiation drastically diminishes mating performance over time. It is well known that fractionated‐dose irradiation, in which a sterilizing dose is delivered via a series of smaller irradiations, reduces radiation damage. In the present study, we evaluated the effect of fractionated‐dose irradiation on fertility, longevity, and mating propensity in Cylas formicarius (Summers) (Coleoptera: Brentidae) for 16 days after irradiation. Fractionated‐dose irradiation with 200 Gy induced full sterility regardless of the number of radiation doses. Although the mating propensity of males sterilized by a single 200 Gy dose (the current standard of the Okinawa Prefecture SIT program) was equal to that of non‐irradiated weevils for the first 6 days, the mating propensity of males sterilized by a series of three doses was maintained for at least the first 12 days. These results demonstrated that fractionated‐dose irradiation can be highly advantageous in C. formicarius eradication programs.  相似文献
