The concept of physiognomic homogamy between parents and children was tested using 39 photo sets consisting of two sets of parents and one child. These photo sets included black and white slides, black and white photographs, and color slides. Matchings of the parents and child were attempted by 171 introductory sociology students. The results indicate that while the matches were far from universal, the students were able to match the children with their parents frequently enough to be statistically significant at the 0.001 level. There were no differences among the various forms of presentation.  相似文献

Abstract

Interracial children of white mothers and black fathers were compared to interracial children of black mothers and white fathers on growth rates during the first year of life. Results indicate that interracial children of white mothers gained less weight between birth and four months of age than did interracial children of black mothers or monoracial black or white children. By one year of age, catch‐up growth appears to have occurred, and there is little evidence for lasting effects of the growth retardation during the first four months of life.  相似文献

BackgroundMillions of people move from rural areas to urban areas in China to pursue new opportunities while leaving their spouses and children at rural homes. Little is known about the impact of migration-related separation on mental health of these rural migrants in urban China.MethodsSurvey data from a random sample of rural-to-urban migrants (n = 1113, aged 18–45) from Wuhan were analyzed. The Domestic Migration Stress Questionnaire (DMSQ), an instrument with four subconstructs, was used to measure migration-related stress. The relationship between spouse/child separation and stress was assessed using survey estimation methods to account for the multi-level sampling design.Results16.46% of couples were separated from their spouses (spouse-separation only), 25.81% of parents were separated from their children (child separation only). Among the participants who married and had children, 5.97% were separated from both their spouses and children (double separation). Spouse-separation only and double separation did not scored significantly higher on DMSQ than those with no separation. Compared to parents without child separation, parents with child separation scored significantly higher on DMSQ (mean score = 2.88, 95% CI: [2.81, 2.95] vs. 2.60 [2.53, 2.67], p < .05). Stratified analysis by separation type and by gender indicated that the association was stronger for child-separation only and for female participants.ConclusionChild-separation is an important source of migration-related stress, and the effect is particularly strong for migrant women. Public policies and intervention programs should consider these factors to encourage and facilitate the co-migration of parents with their children to mitigate migration-related stress.  相似文献

Objective: To compare parental assessments of child body weight status with BMI measurements and determine whether children who are incorrectly classified differ in body composition from those whose parents correctly rate child weight. Also to ascertain whether children of obese parents differ from those of non‐obese parents in actual or perceived body weight. Research Methods and Procedures: Weights, heights, BMI, and waist girths of New Zealand children ages 3 to 8 years were determined. Fat mass, fat percentage, and lean mass were measured by DXA (n = 96). Parents classified child weight status as underweight, normal‐weight, slightly overweight, or overweight. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2000 percentiles of BMI were used. Results: Parents underestimated child weight status. Despite having 83% more fat mass than children with BMI values below the 85th percentile, only 7 of 31 children with BMI values at or above the 85th percentile were rated as slightly overweight or overweight. In the whole sample, participants whose weight status was underestimated by parents (40 of the 96 children) had l9% less fat mass but similar lean mass as children whose weight status was correctly classified. However, children of obese and non‐obese parents did not differ in body composition or anthropometry, and obese parents did not underestimate child weight more than non‐obese parents. Discussion: Because parents underestimate child weight, but BMI values at or above the 85th percentile identify high body fat well, advising parents of the BMI status of their children should improve strategies to prevent excessive fat gain in young children.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article explores how parents include other people’s children in intensive parenting practices. Increased diversification of Norwegian society calls attention to opportunities for social mobility and the risk of greater inequality. However, insufficient research has been carried out into how parents pursue parenting in such a context. How are parenting practices informed by increased diversity? Why and how do parents become engaged with other people’s children? This study explores the concept of intensive parenting, which researchers view as commonplace among Western middle-class parents, and which leads to individualizing parenting. It argues that for some, intensive parenting also incorporates inclusive parenting – a responsibility not only towards their own child, but a concern for and time investment in other people’s children. This parenting style is linked to a desire to create a more egalitarian society, and a belief that a child’s upbringing and future depends upon the wellbeing of other people’s children.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo determine whether the plasma level of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) identifies South Asian Indian children at risk for metabolic syndrome.MethodsAdults and their children aged 5 to 9 years were recruited at the annual health fair at the Hindu temple serving the South Asian Indian community in Louisville, Kentucky. Anthropometric data were collected in adults and children, and blood pressure, lipid, and glucose levels were measured in adults. SHBG levels were measured in children using a fingerstick blood sample. In adults, metabolic syndrome was diagnosed according to the International Diabetes Federation criteria. Twelve months later, follow-up anthropometric data were obtained for a portion of the children.ResultsThe study included 30 sets of parents and 30 children. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome among 310 adults attending the health fair was 42% in men and 39% in women. Children with 1 parent with metabolic syndrome had 24% lower SHBG levels that increased to 55% of both parents had metabolic syndrome. SHBG levels were inversely related to waist circumference and to body mass index percentile. Both SHBG and waist circumference predicted weight gain over 1 year in children.ConclusionsLow SHBG levels were found in South Asian Indian children whose parents had attributes of metabolic syndrome. The dose dependency of SHBG is consistent with inheritance of a genetic trait, and if the results are applicable to other racial/ethnic groups, SHBG may be a useful marker to identify at-risk children for early intervention. ObjectiveTo investigate the racial/ethnic disparities in hemoglobin A1c levels among nondiabetic persons with similar parental history of type 2 diabetes mellitus.MethodsWe studied a community-based sample of adult offspring of parents with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Measurements included anthropometry, hematology assessments, serial fasting plasma glucose, oral glucose tolerance testing, plasma insulin, hemoglobin A1c, insulin sensitivity, and b-cell function, using a homeostasis model assessment.ResultsThe study included 302 participants (135 white, 167 black). Compared with white participants, black participants had lower fasting plasma glucose levels (91.9 ± 0.51 mg/dL vs 93.6 ± 0.50 mg/dL, P = .015), lower area under the curve of plasma glucose during oral glucose tolerance testing (P = <.001), higher body mass index (31.1 ± 0.61 kg/m2 vs 28.5 ± 0.57 kg/m2, P = <.001), and similar insulin sensitivity and b-cell function. Hemoglobin A1c was higher in black participants than in white participants (5.68 ± 0.033% vs 5.45 ± 0.028%, P <.001). The absolute black-white difference in hemoglobin A1c level of approximately 0.22% persisted after adjusting for age, hemoglobin, hematocrit, body mass index, waist circumference, fasting plasma glucose, glucose area under the curve, and other covariates.ConclusionsAmong healthy offspring of parents with type 2 diabetes mellitus in this study, African American participants had higher hemoglobin A1c levels than white participants after adjusting for age, adiposity, blood glucose, and known variables. Thus, plasma glucose level is more valid than hemoglobin A1c for diagnosing prediabetes or diabetes in black persons. (Endocr Pract. 2012; 18:356-362)  相似文献

ObjectiveTo determine the psychological consequences for parents of children with Down''s syndrome of having received a false negative result on prenatal screening.DesignComparison of adjustment of parents who received a false negative result with that of parents not offered a test and those who declined a test.SettingParents were interviewed in their own homes.ParticipantsParents of 179 children with Down''s syndrome (mean age 4 (range 2-6) years).ResultsOverall, regardless of screening history, parents adjusted well to having a child with Down''s syndrome. Compared with mothers who declined a test, mothers in the false negative group had higher parenting stress (mean score 81.2 v 71.8, P=0.016, 95% confidence interval for the difference 1.8 to 17.0) and more negative attitudes towards their children (124.9 v 134.2, P=0.009, −16.2 to −2.4). Fathers in the false negative group had higher parenting stress test scores (77.8 v 70.0, P=0.046, 1.5 to 14.2) than fathers not offered a test. Mothers in the false negative group were more likely to blame others for the outcome than mothers who had not been offered the test (28% v 13%, P=0.032, 3% to 27%). Mothers and fathers in the false negative group were more likely to blame others for this outcome than parents who had declined a test (mothers 28% v 0%, P=0.001, 19% to 37%; fathers 27% v 0%, P=0.004, 17% to 38%). Blaming others was associated with poorer adjustment for mothers and fathers.ConclusionsA false negative result on prenatal screening seems to have a small adverse effect on parental adjustment evident two to six years after the birth of an affected child.  相似文献

Abstract

Causal models of the effects of maternal age on offspring intelligence were generated using three large data sets. The direct and indirect effects of two components of maternal age, teenage motherhood and linear maternal age, were investigated separately for white and black children. The intervening variables investigated as routes of indirect effect were family structure, parental education, parental employment, family income, and family size. The findings indicate that there are no direct effects of teenage maternity on offspring intelligence, and that the observed negative relationship is primarily attributable to parental education. In contrast, the overall effect of maternal age, while very small and positive, is primarily direct, that is, not mediated by any of the social or economic conditions included in the model. The consistency of these findings and the impact on children's intelligence of the other variables included in the model are demonstrated and discussed.  相似文献

We examined sources of variability in stature, body mass, and body mass index (BMI) in families of black and white elementary schoolchildren from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The sample consisted of 445 black and 379 white children, 7-13 years old, and their parents (total n = 2016). The sample was distributed among 596 nuclear families, each representing an independent pedigree. Maximum-likelihood-based variance decomposition methods were used to simultaneously estimate ethnic group-specific effects of genes, sex, age by sex, and unmeasured environmental factors on stature, body mass, and BMI. Likelihood ratio tests were performed to assess the significance of h2 estimates and differences in sigma g and sigma e between black and white families. Genes account for moderate proportions of the phenotypic variance (h2) of these traits in black and white children. In black and white children, respectively, h2 estimates were 0.37 and 0.53 for stature, 0.37 and 0.31 for body mass, and 0.38 and 0.24 for BMI (p < 0.0005). Although the differences in h2 between ethnic groups were not significant (stature, p = 0.23; body mass, p = 0.49; BMI, p = 0.14), black children exhibited a significantly greater total residual phenotypic standard deviation (sigma e and sigma g) in body mass and BMI and a significantly greater sigma e for stature compared with white children. The larger residual phenotypic variance in the black sample is likely due to exposure to unmeasured environmental factors that are not accounted for in this model. Given that sigma g for stature is not significantly different between ethnic groups, the slightly lower estimates in black children are due to the increased contribution of the environment to the phenotypic variance in this trait.  相似文献

Objective: The possibility that there are racial differences in the patterns of BMI (kilograms per meter squared) change throughout life has not been examined. For example, the high prevalence of obesity among black women could result from a higher prevalence of obesity among black girls or because normal‐weight black girls experience larger BMI increases in adolescence or adulthood than do their white counterparts. Therefore, we examined the tracking of childhood BMI into adulthood in a biracial (36% black) sample. Research Methods and Procedures: Five‐ to 14‐year‐old children (2392) were followed for (mean) 17 years. Childhood overweight was defined as BMI ≥ 95th percentile, and adult obesity was defined as BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2. Results: The tracking of childhood BMI differed between whites and blacks. Among overweight children, 65% of white girls vs. 84% of black girls became obese adults, and predictive values among boys were 71% (whites) vs. 82% (blacks). These racial differences reflected contrasting patterns in the rate of BMI change. Although the initial BMI of black children was not higher than that of white children, BMI increases with age were larger among black girls and overweight black boys than among their white counterparts. In contrast, relatively thin (BMI < 50th percentile) white boys were more likely to become overweight adults than were their black counterparts. Discussion: These findings emphasize the black/white differences in BMI changes with age. Because of the adult health consequences of childhood‐onset obesity, early prevention should be given additional emphasis.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper reports on a study of infant and child mortality in the Republic of Korea, a country known for a strong son preference, using the 1974 World Fertility Survey data. When the age‐specific probabilities of dying for ages zero to five are compared for male and female children, an unusual pattern of relatively high female mortality is observed. The higher female mortality is more pronounced during childhood than during infancy. Multivariate analysis of life tables, using a hazard model, shows that covariates influencing the mortality at young ages differ for male and female children and suggests that male and female children receive unequal care by their parents. The analysis also reveals different patterns of interaction between infant and child mortality and mother's fertility control behavior depending on the sex of the child.  相似文献

BackgroundIn the Netherlands a need is felt for more flexible Child Health Care services, both efficient and tailored to needs. We set up a study on impact and feasibility of task delegation to child health care nurses performing all regular checkups on children aged 2 months to 4 years. Abnormal findings were discussed with the attending child health care doctor. This article describes impact and feasibility of this task delegation from four viewpoints: competences of nurses; percentage of children assigned to the nurse; change in abnormal findings and referrals; experiences of professionals and parents.MethodsTwo experiment teams and two control teams were compared before and after starting task delegation. Nurses in the experiment teams were trained to carry out regular checkups on healthy children. Assignment to the experiment schedule was a joint decision by doctor and nurse. Nursing competences were measured by means of questionnaires. Percentage of children assigned to the nurse and screening results of eyes, heart, hips, growth and development were extracted from the electronic health record. Difference in change was compared between experiment and control teams. Mann-Whitney tests and logistic generalized estimating equations were used to test for significance. Experiences of professionals and parents were evaluated through focus group interviews, which were subjected to a qualitative analysis.ResultsNurses in the experiment regions showed improvement in medical screening skills. No difference in change was perceived in general nursing competences. In the experiment group, 69% of all children were assigned to the nurse. There were no significant differences in change in the percentages of abnormal findings or referrals in the experiment teams compared to the control teams, except for hips. Interviews showed that both doctors and nurses thought positively of the new working method, yet made some recommendations for improvements. Parents felt well-informed and experienced an equal level of proficiency but less continuity in person.ConclusionThis experiment shows that task delegation from doctor to nurse in preventive child health care is feasible. It is important to pay attention to the acceptation process of professionals during implementation. More investigation is needed in order to assess effectiveness and efficacy of task delegation.  相似文献

Abstract

Dissatisfaction with one's physical appearance is rampant among women living in western cultures. However, little research has examined dissatisfaction with body areas that may be more salient to racial-minority groups (e.g., hair, eyes, skin colour). This study examined dissatisfaction with racially salient appearance areas and ethnic identity in self-identified black (n=76), white (n=104) and Latina (n=106) female college students in the southern USA. Results revealed that Latina women reported significantly more dissatisfaction with their eyes and nose than white and black women. Additionally, white and Latina women reported significantly more dissatisfaction with their facial features, lips, lower body and overall body than black women. Stronger ethnic identity predicted lower levels of body dissatisfaction on most appearance areas for all women. These results suggest that social scientists should consider racially salient appearance areas in the measurement and conceptualization of body dissatisfaction in ethnically diverse women.  相似文献

ObjectivesTo identify whether psychiatric disturbance in parentally bereaved children and surviving parents is related to service provision.DesignProspective case-control study.SettingTwo adjacent outer London health authorities. Participants45 bereaved families with children aged 2 to 16 years.ResultsParentally bereaved children and surviving parents showed higher than expected levels of psychiatric difficulties. Boys were more affected than girls, and bereaved mothers had more mental health difficulties than bereaved fathers. Levels of psychiatric disturbance in children were higher when parents showed probable psychiatric disorder. Service provision related to the age of the children and the manner of parental death. Children under 5 years of age were less likely to be offered services than older children even though their parents desired it. Children were significantly more likely to be offered services when the parent had committed suicide or when the death was expected. Children least likely to receive service support were those who were not in touch with services before parental death.ConclusionsService provision was not significantly related to parental wishes or to level of psychiatric disturbance in parents or children. There is a role for general practitioners and primary care workers in identifying psychologically distressed surviving parents whose children may be psychiatrically disturbed, and referring them to appropriate services.

Key messages

  • Parentally bereaved children show high levels of psychological disturbance, with boys being more vulnerable than girls
  • Surviving mothers show more psychiatric morbidity than surviving fathers
  • Psychological distress in bereaved parents is associated with psychological difficulties in their children
  • Service provision for bereaved children is not determined by mental health difficulties in either parents or children, or by parental wishes; it is influenced only by the manner of parental death and the age of the child
  • The mismatch between need and service provision indicates a role for general practitioners and primary care workers in identifying distressed or disturbed families in need of public or voluntary service help

We measured whole body bone, fat and lean mass, by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, of third-grade children in a suburban public school district adjacent to Detroit. Of 1,340 eligible children, 773 participated. Using U.S. Census categories, parents identified their children as black/African-American (57%), white (38%), or one of several other categories (5%). Some of the participants also identified with a relatively large Middle Eastern subgroup (Chaldeans). Of the 773 participants, 734 are included in this report (71 Chaldeans, 226 whites, and 437 black/African-Americans; other categories are omitted). We describe body size, body composition, and physical activity levels in the three groups. The Chaldean and black children have significantly higher average whole body bone mineral content (BMC) than whites (P > 0.05), but are not different from each other. Lean mass and height are significantly greater for Chaldeans and blacks than for whites. The ratio of BMC to height was also significantly greater in Chaldeans and blacks compared with whites. Chaldeans have a significantly higher weight and fat mass than either the black or white children, and report significantly less physical activity than either the white or the black children. The higher bone mass among the Chaldean children may be partially explained by their greater body mass, but there is no readily apparent explanation for the observed ethnic differences in body size. We cannot exclude genetic or environmental factors not evaluated in this observational study. Our unexpected finding that Chaldean children, when analyzed as a separate group, are more similar in body composition to black/African-American than to white children contributes to a growing body of literature indicating that the uncritical use of “race” categories may obscure rather than facilitate the identification of population differences. BackgroundThe relative role of socioeconomic status (SES), home environment and maternal intelligence, as factors affecting child cognitive development in early childhood is still unclear. The aim of this study is to analyze the association of SES, home environment and maternal IQ with child neurodevelopment at 18 months.MethodsThe data were collected prospectively in the PHIME study, a newborn cohort study carried out in Italy between 2007 and 2010. Maternal nonverbal abilities (IQ) were evaluated using the Standard Progressive Matrices, a version of the Raven’s Progressive Matrices; a direct evaluation of the home environment was carried out with the AIRE instrument, designed using the HOME (Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment) model; the socioeconomic characteristics were evaluated using the SES index which takes into account parents occupation, type of employment, educational level, homeownership. The study outcome was child neurodevelopment evaluated at 18 months, with the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development Third Edition (BSID III). Linear regression analyses and mediation analyses were carried out to evaluate the association between the three exposures, and the scaled scores of the three main scales of BSID III (cognitive, language and motor scale), with adjustment for a wide range of potential explanatory variables.ResultsData from 502 mother-child pairs were analyzed. Mediation analysis showed a relationship between SES and maternal IQ, with a complete mediation effect of home environment in affecting cognitive and language domains. A direct significant effect of maternal IQ on the BSID III motor development scale and the mediation effect of home environment were found.ConclusionsOur results show that home environment was the variable with greater influence on neurodevelopment at 18 months. The observation of how parents and children interact in the home context is crucial to adequately evaluate early child development.  相似文献

BackgroundBlack pericarp rice has recently become popular among rice consumers for its diverse health benefits specially anti-cancer effect. Cyanidin-3-Glucosides (C3G), an prominant bioactive component of anthocyanins which is abundantly present in black pericarp rice.ObjectivesWe investigated, how effectively it can be used to fortify Cyanidin-3-Glucosides (C3G) content in red and white pericarp polished rice or rice based bakery products for more nutritional value.MethodIn the present study, we have characterized several black pericarp rice cultivars along with some red pericarp and white pericarp rice cultivars by physicochemical including mineral profiling, and quantified the C3G by UFLC and LCMS.ResultsC3G content was significantly reduced from raw rice to cooked rice condition. All the black pericarp rice cultivars synthesized C3G, while this content was not detected in red and white pericarp rice cultivars. However, when 25% of black pericarp rice were mixed with 75% red or white pericarp polished rice, C3G content was significantly retained in cooked rice conditions. Formulation of rice-based bakery food product using black pericarp rice powder was also remarkably retained the C3G content as compared to that of cooking. Black rice is harder in texture, difficult to digest and needs higher energy for cooking. Therefore, we tried to circumvent these challenges by fortifying 25% of black pericarp rice with white or red pericarp rice.ConclusionFortification of C3G enriched black rice (25%) with red or white pericarp rice (75%) might bring a better nutritional quality in both cooking and baking condition. This may lead a way to the effective management of the non-communicable disease such as cancer for common rice consuming population.  相似文献

Objective: To characterize the associations between socioeconomic status (SES), two levels of subjective social status (SSS), and adolescent obesity. Research Methods and Procedures: Cross‐sectional study of 1491 black and white adolescents attending public school in a suburban school district in Greater Cincinnati, Ohio. BMI ≥95th percentile derived from measured height and weight defined overweight. Students rated SSS on separate 10‐point scales for society and school. A parent provided information on parent education and household income for SES. Results: Although there were no sex differences in SES, black students were more likely to come from families with less well‐educated parents and lower incomes (p < 0.001). Black girls had the lowest societal SSS (p = 0.003), lowest school SSS (p = 0.046), and highest BMI (p < 0.001). Prevalence of overweight was highest among black girls (26.0%) and boys (26.2%), intermediate for white boys (17.2%), and least for white girls (11.6%). Logistic regression modeling revealed that parent education, household income, and school SSS were each associated with overweight. In a fully adjusted model, school SSS retained its association to overweight (odds ratio, 1.16; 95% CI, 1.06, 1.26) independent of SES. The association of school SSS was strongest among white girls, intermediate for white and black boys, and absent for black girls. Discussion: Perceptions of social stratification are independently associated with overweight. There were important racial and sex differences in the social status‐overweight association. SSS in the more immediate, local reference group, the school, had the strongest association to overweight.  相似文献
