Summary We traced the development in the laboratory of 18 young colonies of the arboricolous ponerine antEctatomma tuberculatum. Colony foundation is of the partially-claustral type. During the early stages, when the colony is entirely dependent on the queen's behavior, the growth of the colony in terms of number of workers produced over time was relatively predictable. Afterwards, divergence in colony growth in function of the time increases as fast as the number of workers influences the efficiency of colony provisioning.Comparative analysis indicated clear changes in the predation behavior of foundresses and workers as colonies developed. For any stage of colony growth, all individuals provisioned the nest with dead prey or sugar-rich substances in the same way. However, prey hunting involves two different strategies. Foundresses and nanitic workers (originating from colonies with 9–15 workers) foraged actively, catching prey as the result of random encounters. Post-nanitic foragers (originating from colonies with 20–30 workers) and those from nature colonies developed an ambush strategy. Workers in these colonies gained experience at catching and handling prey during a period when they acted as nest guards, and so tended to be more efficient hunters than poorly experienced foundresses or nanitic foragers. The change in strategy was also positively correlated with an increase in the size of workers as the colony matured. A stable maximum in workers size is apparently reached only after the appearance of efficiently hunting foragers, presumably in numbers sufficient to provide adequate quantity and quality of larval food. Such a correlation between worker size and colony growth, assumed general for all ants, has not been demonstrated for Ponerinae before this work.  相似文献

The central life-history trade-off between current and future reproductive effort seems to be mediated by corticosterone in birds. However, still little is known about how naturally occurring corticosterone levels during an acute stress may influence subsequent parental behavior. In this study we observed the parental behavior of free-living male house sparrows (Passer domesticus) both before and after they were subjected to a standard capture–handling stress. We investigated the relationships between corticosterone levels, pre- and post-stress parental behavior, while we statistically controlled for a number of other variables using a multivariate regression method, the path analysis. We found that males' baseline feeding rate predicted the body mass of the nestlings, indicating that male parental care is directly linked to fitness. Corticosterone levels were not explained by baseline feeding rate, but both baseline and stress-induced corticosterone levels had a negative influence on the males' post-stress feeding behavior. Moreover, males with large bib size had a stronger stress response and lower post-stress feeding rate than small bibbed males. These results indicate that naturally occurring variation in baseline and stress-induced corticosterone levels may influence subsequent parental decisions: individuals mounting a robust stress response are likely to reduce their parental commitment. Parental effort may be regulated in a complex manner, with corticosterone mediating the life-history trade-off between current reproduction and survival. However, different resolutions of this trade-off were apparent only following the stress, therefore the ability to modulate the stress response and maintain parental care in stressful situations may be important in life-history evolution.  相似文献

The interplay between the recruitment dance and food-giving trophallactic contacts of returning Apis mellifera foragers was analyzed. Dancing and trophallactic events were recorded for bees returning from a rate feeder that provided 50% weight on weight sucrose solution at a constant flow rate of 5 μl min−1. Bees that had danced immediately before their trophallactic contact had more recipients per trophallaxis compared with bees that did not dance before. Thus, besides information coded in dancing behavior, dance maneuvers could serve as a stimulus to increase attention of bees located on the dance floor to receive nectar. In addition, the number of bees receiving food during a trophallaxis showed a positive correlation with the probability of dancing immediately after contacting. The time from arrival at the hive to when the first or the subsequent contacts took place presented no correlation with the probability of dancing after trophallaxis. Also, the duration of a trophallaxis was positively correlated with the number of recipients per trophallaxis. These results suggest that returning foragers could receive information during a trophallactic contact with their hive mates that modify thresholds for dancing. Dance maneuvers and trophallactic contacts performed by foraging bees seem to be “mutually” affected. Accepted: 29 November 1999  相似文献

A survey of the smoking habits, attitudes, and background of over 15 000 8-19 year olds in northern England in December 1982 showed a positive correlation between parental smoking and the reporting of frequent coughs by children who had never smoked. This was especially pronounced in the youngest children. Thirty five per cent of boys under 11 who had never smoked and whose parents did not smoke reported frequent coughs; with one parent smoking this increased to 42%, and when both parents smoked the proportion was 48%. Girls under 11 showed the same pattern, with 32%, 40%, and 52% respectively reporting frequent coughs. Fewer older children in general reported frequent coughs. Mothers'' smoking had more influence on children''s coughs than had fathers'' smoking. Social area type had no significant effect. No significant effect of passive smoking was observed when the children themselves were smokers. These results are clear evidence of a definite link between smoking in the home and coughs in young children, which not only may present immediate problems but may also be a cause of illness in the future.  相似文献

In termites, the soldier caste, with its specialized defensive morphology, is one of the most important characteristics for sociality. Most of the basal termite species have both male and female soldiers, and the soldier sex ratio is almost equal or only slightly biased. However, in the apical lineages (especially family Termitidae), there are many species that have soldiers with strongly biased sex ratio. Generally in termites, since high juvenile hormone (JH) titer is required for soldier differentiation from a worker via a presoldier stage, it was hypothesized that the biased soldier-sex ratio was caused by differences in JH sensitivity and/or JH titer between male and female workers. Therefore, we focused on the presoldier differentiation and the worker JH titer in species with only male soldiers (Nasutitermes takasagoensis) and with both male and female soldiers (Reticulitermes speratus) in natural conditions. In the former species, there are four types of workers; male minor, male medium, female medium and female major workers, and presoldiers differentiate from male minor workers. First, we tried to artificially induce presoldiers from male and female workers. In N. takasagoensis, the presoldier differentiation rate and mortality was significantly higher in male minor workers. Morphological analyses showed that both male and female induced presoldiers possessed normal soldier-specific morphologies. It was suggested that female workers, from which soldiers do not differentiate under natural conditions, also maintained the physiological and developmental potential for soldier differentiation. In R. speratus, however, no differences were observed in solder differentiation rate and mortality between male and female workers. Second, the JH titers of each sex/type of workers were quantified by high performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry in two different seasons (April and December). The results showed that, in N. takasagoensis, JH titer in male minor workers was consistently higher than those in other worker types. In R. speratus, in contrast, there were no significant differences in JH titers between male and female workers. These results suggested that, in N. takasagoensis, male minor workers maintain JH titers at a high level throughout a year, and this may cause the male-biased presoldier differentiation.  相似文献

To determine the costs and benefits of queen association in termites we examined for the first time female-female interactions in colonies founded by two unmated females. In the termite Reticulitermes speratus, females that fail to pair with males found colonies cooperatively with partner females and reproduce by parthenogenesis. We analysed the relationship between queen dominance and initial size ranking in two-queen colonies from the viewpoint of first worker brood production and weight gain. To assign parentage to offspring of two-queen colonies we used mtDNA restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP); the results suggested that the two queens produced first worker brood equally throughout colony foundation. Furthermore, initially smaller females gained significantly more weight than initially larger females. This may have resulted from altruistic behaviour of the larger females towards the smaller ones. A simple mathematical model, which considered resource allocation and survivorship, could explain why the larger females behave altruistically towards the smaller females. We also examined the responses of females when more than two females were placed in a petri dish in the presence or absence of a male. If a partner male was present, only one female survived in the colony. In the absence of a partner male, two females, but never more than two, founded a colony cooperatively. These results show that females need a partner to found, and retain, a colony.Copyright 2002 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. Large colonies of Enterobacter cloacae which were about 700 micrometer thick were frozen in liquid nitrogen and sectioned horizontally. The sections were disrupted and several oxidative enzymes were assayed in the crude unfractionated homogenates. In the top 120 micrometer of the colonies the specific activities of the enzymes were high and characteristic of aerobically adapted cells. Cells nearer the base of colonies had very low enzyme activities.  相似文献

Division of labor was studied in incipient colonies of the dampwood termite Zootermopsis angusticollisby recording repertoire size, behavior frequencies, and time budgets of larvae. Behavioral repertoire size increased with age: first- and secondinstar larvae were mainly inactive, whereas larvae of the third through seventh instars performed 64–100% of all tasks. The increase in repertoire size from the second to the third instar was abrupt; repertoire size and composition remained more or less constant for older instars. No correlation between age (instars III–VII) and tasks was identified, suggesting that colony labor is performed by a single functional caste that spans the third to the seventh instar without any age-based division of labor. Small colony size, low oviposition rate, simple nest architecture, a lack of spatial association of tasks, and the potential for attaining reproductive status appear to be associated with the lack of age-related behavioral specialization in Z. angusticollis. In effect, the absence of temporal polyethism in this species is likely a consequence of its nesting habits and physiological and developmental constraints.  相似文献

Infections early in life can have enduring effects on an organism's development and immunity. In this study, we show that this equally applies to developing ‘superorganisms’––incipient social insect colonies. When we exposed newly mated Lasius niger ant queens to a low pathogen dose, their colonies grew more slowly than controls before winter, but reached similar sizes afterwards. Independent of exposure, queen hibernation survival improved when the ratio of pupae to workers was small. Queens that reared fewer pupae before worker emergence exhibited lower pathogen levels, indicating that high brood rearing efforts interfere with the ability of the queen's immune system to suppress pathogen proliferation. Early-life queen pathogen exposure also improved the immunocompetence of her worker offspring, as demonstrated by challenging the workers to the same pathogen a year later. Transgenerational transfer of the queen's pathogen experience to her workforce can hence durably reduce the disease susceptibility of the whole superorganism.  相似文献

Nishida andUehara have contrasted two groups of chimpanzees at the Mahale Mountains in their manner of obtaining termites for food. K-group very rarely used tools, but evidence suggested that B-group did so regularly to fish forMacrotermes. They suggested that this difference was not a cultural one, but was explained by the absence ofMacrotermes in K-group's range. We attempted to test this hypothesis, and here examine the termite fauna in the ranges of the two groups. Our data confirm that termite-fishing was contingent upon the presence ofMacrotermes in B-group's range, and that cultural explanations are not necessary to explain the rarity of tool use by K-group, which instead could catchPseudacanthotermes without using tools. Comparison of the termite faunas in the ranges of K-group, of B-group, and of the chimpanzees at Gombe, suggest that, apart fromMacrotermes, two genera might be the main alternative prey:Pseudacanthotermes, which could be more commonly included in the diet at Gombe, and might also be eaten by B-group, andCubitermes which is available at both these sites.  相似文献

Pluripotent hemopoietic progenitors lose potentialities during the process of differentiation. We have examined events that lead to lineage restriction by determining the cellular composition of 785 multilineage colonies grown from peripheral blood samples of glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) heterozygous volunteers. Of these colonies, 762 contained only one isoenzyme type and were considered to be of clonal origin. A considerable heterogenity was observed. Some colonies were composed of cells belonging to two different lineages, while other colonies contained three or more different cell types. A small number of colonies consisted—in addition to myeloid cells—of T-lymphocytes. The variable association within individual colonies of members belonging to different hemopoietic lineages suggests a flexible determination and expression of differentiation programs by early progenitors.  相似文献

Bryozoans are typical modular organisms. They consist of repetitive structural units, the zooids. Bryozoan colonies grow by zooidal budding, with the distribution pattern of the budding loci underlying the diversity of colony forms. Budding is usually restricted to the colony periphery, where a “growing edge” or local terminal growth zones are formed. Non-budding parts of the colony can be functionally subdivided, too. In many species colonies consist of regular, often repetitive zones of feeding and non-feeding modules, associated with a periodical degeneration and regeneration of the polypide retractile tentacle crown with a gut and the accompanying musculature. The mechanisms of functional differentiation in bryozoan colonies are unknown. Presumably, budding and/or polypide recycling are induced or inhibited by certain determinants of functional specialization in different colony parts. An effective tool of their identification is the comparison of proteomes in functionally different zones. Here we report the results of proteomic analysis of three bryozoan species from the White Sea with a different colony form: Flustrellidra hispida, Terminoflustra membranaceotruncata and Securiflustra securifrons. Using differential two-dimensional electrophoresis (2D-DIGE), we compared proteomes of the growing edge, the zone with polypides and the zone without polypides. We assessed the general level of differences between the zones and revealed proteins whose relative abundance changed gradually along the proximal-distal colony axis. These proteins might be involved in the determination of the functional differentiation of the colony.  相似文献

Oxytocin plays an important role in monogamous pairbonded female voles, but not in polygamous voles. Here we examined a socially monogamous cooperatively breeding primate where both sexes share in parental care and territory defense for within species variation in behavior and female and male oxytocin levels in 14 pairs of cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus). In order to obtain a stable chronic assessment of hormones and behavior, we observed behavior and collected urinary hormonal samples across the tamarins’ 3-week ovulatory cycle. We found similar levels of urinary oxytocin in both sexes. However, basal urinary oxytocin levels varied 10-fold across pairs and pair-mates displayed similar oxytocin levels. Affiliative behavior (contact, grooming, sex) also varied greatly across the sample and explained more than half the variance in pair oxytocin levels. The variables accounting for variation in oxytocin levels differed by sex. Mutual contact and grooming explained most of the variance in female oxytocin levels, whereas sexual behavior explained most of the variance in male oxytocin levels. The initiation of contact by males and solicitation of sex by females were related to increased levels of oxytocin in both. This study demonstrates within-species variation in oxytocin that is directly related to levels of affiliative and sexual behavior. However, different behavioral mechanisms influence oxytocin levels in males and females and a strong pair relationship (as indexed by high levels of oxytocin) may require the activation of appropriate mechanisms for both sexes.  相似文献

Parental care and division of labor in male and female primary reproductives in incipient colonies of the dampwood termite Zootermopsis angusticolliswere studied by recording repertory sizes, behavior frequencies, time budgets, and transition probabilities of acts. Repertory sizes for males and females were identical, and behaviors were performed at similar frequencies. Time budget data also suggested equal participation in parental care by both sexes. Transition probability analysis suggested that males and females did not organize their behavior in roles. We therefore found no indication of sex-based division of labor during colony foundation and the incipient stages of colony growth. The lack of behavioral specialization may be due to the fact that acts might be related and/or have more than one function, and different tasks are not spatially associated. Our observations are consistent with the hypothesis that monogamous mating systems in termites involve mate assistance.  相似文献

The composition of the apical plasma membrane of bladder superficial urothelial cells is dramatically modified during cell differentiation, which is accompanied by the change in the dynamics of endocytosis. We studied the expression of urothelial differentiation-related proteins uroplakins and consequently the apical plasma membrane molecular composition in relation to the membrane-bound and fluid-phase endocytosis in bladder superficial urothelial cells. By using primary urothelial cultures in the environment without mechanical stimuli, we studied the constitutive endocytosis. Four new findings emerge from our study. First, in highly differentiated superficial urothelial cells with strong uroplakin expression, the endocytosis of fluid-phase endocytotic markers was 43% lower and the endocytosis of membrane-bound markers was 86% lower compared to partially differentiated cells with weak uroplakin expression. Second, superficial urothelial cells have 5–15-times lower endocytotic activity than MDCK cells. Third, in superficial urothelial cells the membrane-bound markers are delivered to lysosomes, while fluid-phase markers are seen only in early endocytotic compartments, suggesting their kiss-and-run recycling. Finally, we provide the first evidence that in highly differentiated cells the uroplakin-positive membrane regions are excluded from internalization, suggesting that uroplakins hinder endocytosis from the apical plasma membrane in superficial urothelial cells and thus maintain optimal permeability barrier function.  相似文献

Identifying the drivers of community structure and dynamics is a major pursuit in ecology. Emphasis is typically placed on the importance of local scale interactions when attempting to explain these fundamental ecological patterns. However, regional scale phenomena are also important predictors. The importance of regional scale context should be more evident in assemblages where multiple species are close to their range margins. Here, we test the importance of regional scale context using data from a temperate forest plot that contains two species groups – one near its northern range limit and one near its southern range limit. We show the proximity of species to their southern or northern range margins is linked to local scale co-occurrence, similarity in gene expression responses to a key environmental driver, demographic performance and inter-specific variation in conspecific negative density dependence. In sum, many of the key local scale patterns and processes of interest to community ecologists are linked to biogeographic context that is frequently ignored.  相似文献
